This class was horrible! Don't take him! I had to teach myself from the book. He was incredibly hard!
Awesome professor. Speaks English and teaches math! I hadn't taken math in 14 years, and he helped me every step of the way. Provides practice exams before every test. Provides plenty of class time to ask questions. Organized, well prepared lecturer. Always available via e-mail or office hours. I loved taking his class and he's pretty funny!
Absolute wonderful teacher! I had him over the fall semester and would take it again. All of his tests are straight from the notes but attendance is an absolute must in order to pass. He is always willing to help you but does expect you to do your part.
Steven Shalit is very thurough and completely writes out each example problem from begining to end. He is very smart and NEVER makes a mistake when doing math on the board. Very funny and nice.
Shalit makes it incredibly easy to follow along without being overwhelmed by the material. He explains all the details very well and has a wonderful personality. Also the TI-83 calc is a must for his class!
He was a very good teacher. Everything was written clearly on the board and explained. Any questions were answered fully. He's funny too.
Awesome teacher and he does try hard to crack a joke in class. Teaches very clear and wastes no time. His tests are hard because they are short, but as long as you memorize the formulas your set.
He's a really cool teacher. Explains EVERYTHING, and writes everything on the board. He's always trying to crack jokes, its funny. He's very helpful. If you don't understand something just e-mail him or ask after class, etc. He's good with getting back to you. I'd def. take him again. PS: I HATE Math; I took this during the summer too.)
Very Helpful, even to the extent that he can write answers for you in the examinations. I got grades for the part I hadn't even attempted.
I did not like this professor at all. He moved way too fast and treated you like you were stupid when you asked a question.
He rushes through lectures and if any of the students has questions he looks down on them.
I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND THIS PROFESSOR TO ANYONE HE FLIES THROUGH LECTURES AND NO ONE SHOULD DARE ASK HIM ANY QUESTIONS BECAUSE IF SO HE LOOKS AT YOU AS IF YOUR STUPID AND AS IF YOU SHOULD KNOW THE ANSWER. IF YOUR A MATH WIZ GO RIGHT AHEAD AND TAKE HIM BUT IF NOT DON'T BECAUSE HE'S NOT VERY HELPFUL WITH HIS TEACHING EFFORTS.
Best math teacher I've ever had. Very, very fair, but you will only like him if you're willing to work hard. He will never ask a test question he hasn't shown you explicit examples of. Taking notes is mandatory, he basically gives away all the things to look for on exams. Great teacher, but hard. If you do the work you will gain alot of confidence.
AMAZING! DEFF TAKE! BEST CALC TEACHER!
I'm not sure what the people who rate him highly are smoking but this guy is a bad professor. I'm taking business statistics with him now and there really is no reason to go to class. He flies through lectures and makes you feel stupid when you ask a question. I have to teach myself by way of reading the text. Take someone else if you can.
-Has overall negative attitude; one cannot ask a question without having intelligence insulted; does not engage students-acts like we are always behind; he says notes on board are not enough, but moves too fast to jot anything else down; walks up and down as if class is not even there--no explanation of problem steps; homework = 3 hours/each.
Teacher go's way to fast. I worked hard and showed up to class and believe it or not still failed.
I would not suggest this teacher. I took pages of notes each class, spent 3 hours/homework, studied for each test, attended every class and still managed to fail. He moves way too fast and does not like answering questions.
He warns you in the beginning that he has to go through a lot of material and move quickly and to get out if you can't handle it. Although there is a buttload of stuff to learn, he explains everything with great detail. Just study your notes and do your homework (which is the hardest part of the class). I really wish he would teach 2786, too.
He went too slow for me. The homework and practice tests are all you need to do to get a good grade unless you don't understand it then you need to do the practice problems at the end of the chapters. He will help you if you have a problem, just go and talk to him, he is a very nice guy when not lecturing.
Too fast and No help!
This was the stats class for bus majors. Prof Shalit was & is the best Stats teacher I've ever had & I've taken it 3 times so I've had my share of professors! Stats is a very hard class no matter what but his knowledge of the subject makes his teaching method much easier 2 understand. If u need help ask but no handouts! U have to work 4 ur grade!!
Prof Shalit is the best Prof I've ever had for stats & I've taken it 3 times. Stats is a hard subject no matter what but his knowledge in the subject makes his teaching method easier to understand. If u need help ask but be willing to do the work! No handouts! No curves! No bonuses! Blood sweat tears and hard work!! He's the best in my book!!
WAY TOO FAST AND ISNT CLEAR IN CLASS...IVE HAD A BETTER PROFESSOR FOR SURE
Very good at explaining everything very clearly BUT his tests are very hard and practice tests are usually a lot easier than the actual test! Be prepared to study A LOT!
Dude is smart, and he reminds you that he is. Very helpful guy until it comes times for the test. You will find the questions on tests look very little like what he went over in class.
Shalit is by far the best math teacher I've had. He's totally clear on the material and extremely helpful in class and after class. He knows his material inside and out. Take his class if you've had unclear professors in the past. I give him two thumbs up! Note: no curve because you shouldn't need it
Professor Shalit is absolutely the best. If you do your homework you'll have no problem in his class. In addition, he makes practice exams and makes his own homework so the test are straight forward!
WORST TEACHER AT UNO...do not take him unless you already know statistics! He will make you feel stupid...I couldn't get any better than a D in his class...took Crespo the following semester..AMAZING..finished her class with a high B! Do not take this guy you will regret it!
Hard professor. He goes over a lot of material and its all convoluted. By the time you try to figure out whats going on, he's already 2 or 3 steps ahead. Tests are very hard and he grades with a microscope.
Great teacher! Very clear and helpful!
One of the best math teachers I've ever had. He's really helpful and nice. I'm horrible at math but he's good at explaining the material. He gives you a practice test to work on before each test which gives you a good idea of what kind of questions to expect. You can easily get an A or B in his class and learn a lot.
This could have been an easy A had I not forgotten to do some of the homework. Homework is essential in understanding. The homework site was extremely helpful. He explains everything very well. He is clear on his expectations. Do not show up late. He has a dry sense of humor that I found amusing and he is very smart and cares for his students.
Best calc prof in the department. Do the homework and youll get a good grade.
He was ok, but too hard, making his tests and homework hard and his students look like an idiot answering their questions with an attitude. He was also a horrible teacher.
Shalit is very clear in giving notes and what he expects of you. His only downfall is his arrogance. I personally found this to be a bit of a learning barrier. Overall though, he is good at what he does.
Mr. Shalit was horrible, he didn't explain well enough that he went straight to the examples and would say that notes on board are not enough to study and he is so hard. Avoid him!
This guy is obviously smarter than most people and really knowledgeable about mathematics, and he will reassure you of these facts in seemingly every class. If your feelings get hurt easily, avoid him at all costs, or simply don't ask questions. He will teach you math for sure, but will do it with all the tact and magnanimity of a horse's rear.
He genuinely wants everyone to succeed. Go to class and do all of the assigned homework, and there is no reason you shouldn't expect an A. Also, save questions about your calculator/not pertaining to the lecture for his office. You can't go wrong with Mr. Shalit unless you don't want to work. In that case, I'd look for a different instructor.
I loved Shalit's class!! It was by far the best math class that I've ever had. Made math easy and he is just a cool dude. BEST math teacher ever in my opinion. Take his class!!! It's super easy and super clear (with lectures and stuff).
Great introduction class to Calculus. Teaches you exactly what he tests you on...well organized..keeps same pace throughout class. I recommend
I like the way he teaches the class, but his tests are really hard and he looks at his students as if they're dumb when they ask him questions, so he's not helpful.
the worst... avoid at all cost
I like the challenge of his class and he is pretty funny, but he is very hard to keep up with. He skips steps when writing problems on the board, but makes you show all work on the test. He also goes too fast and dont expect to get a question answered because he rarely looks over his shoulder. AVOID AVOID AVOID
Horrible professor. He skips a few steps, says notes on board are not enough to study and grades hard if you don't write the steps. He would give you points off for not writing and even if you know how to do it without the steps.
wth these ppl saying? i took MATH 1126 and Math 2111 with Dr. Shalit in the spring 2012. i had A on both classes. TRUST ME PPL, he was super clear on what he expected you to do on the exams.you couldnt deny that he told you to NOT SKIP any steps in EACH and EVERY SINGLE lecture. YEAH, EXAMS ARE NOT HARD if u understand the problems.stop complaining
This was probably one of the hardest classes I've ever taken, but Shalit is honestly one of the best professors I've ever had. He genuinely cares about his students and wants to see everyone pass. He's extremely sweet and funny and he made an 8am class enjoyable. If you can, definitely take his class!! It will be hard, but completely worth it.
the worst professor. avoid him at all costs. i took yao after him and he was better than shalit.
This is the 2nd class I have taken with Mr. Shalit, and I will continue to sign up for his classes as long as I can. His classes are hard because the material is hard. He is super clear about expectations, and more than willing to help. Save ALL questions until he finishes; anything not immediately relevant, save for office hours/after class.
Never take shalit for this class. He is arrogant and has no patience for his students if they don't understand math. He makes his students feel like an idiot if they have questions and he grades hard by taking off all points for not showing work and not showing work correctly if getting to the correct answer.
Literally the worst math teacher I have ever experienced. Do not get me wrong, Shalit knows what he is doing, but also thinks everyone else does too. He thinks everyone should know this hard material and does not stop to answer questions for anyone. Gets very annoyed if you don't understand the material he teaches and overall just a rude man.
One of my favorite math teachers! He goes over material fast and pushes you to do well. When he had us do work in the comp. lab he would check to make sure everyone was doing okay. His concern for my progress in class was so nice. I received a 99 on the first test in the class. I'm surprised by the low rating on here. I thought he was great
What he says when solving the exams after giving them back: "I finished the test in 20 minutes while talking and explaining it to you guys, so you should do it in 30" Of course, dude you wrote the exam. He thinks he is really good in math, but sometimes he is notable to solve problems and he just blames it on plugging stuff in the calculator wrong.
The worst teacher! Avoid him at all costs, because he is extremely arrogant and tough with grading tests and homework.
College level math is not easy; Shalit does not go out of his way to make it so. That said, his lectures are very clear. Go to class, do the homework, and seek help outside of office hours if you need. I've found that a good attitude will take you a long way with him.
I started off disliking him but at the end of the semester I was very thankful to have taken him. His class is completely straightforward and to the point. Definitely print out his lecture notes and do the MyMathLab lab tests and quizzes. Asking questions was a bit intimidating because he will answer as if you're stupid. Overall, a very good prof!
Calculus is hard. Deal with it. That said, Mr Shalit will do his best to help you understand it. Save all questions for after class unless you can't avoid it. Highly recommend unless you aren't willing to work hard. In that case, the prof makes no difference: steer clear of math-related subjects in general.
Shalit is intense but a great teacher. Go to class. Do the testbook homework. There is alot of EWA but I didnt do much and got an A the second time around. Still not a good idea since its free points. Work hard and youll get a B or an A
Shalit is a good teacher because of how he teaches the class, it's good but one thing I don't like about him is his attitude being arrogant when students ask him questions. He makes them feel stupid when they have questions and he's really strict on grading. He grades too hard and is not lenient with grading.
First off, don't miss a class. His notes are excellent. It does take time to adjust to his style of teaching. You will hate the online homework. Shalit will work with you if you do all of your work, attend class, and ask questions. He will poke fun at you at times, that's just how he is. Listen and learn, you will do well. Just be ready to work!!
10/10 teacher. Very straight forward and helpful. No question was impossible. Does require quite a bit of studying to do well though
Shalit is a wonderful man with extraordinary talent far beyond his time. He often compares himself to Socrates or Plato and sometimes Good Will Hunting rightfully so. He is a mathemagician. He''s the type of man whose eraser is always full and pencil always short. He never makes any mistakes and he works long hard to see his students succeed.
Shalit is by far the greatest math teacher I have ever had in my entire life. Advice Do all the EWA's and textbook homework. Don't fall behind. You will get an A He gives excellent notes. Don't just write them down pay attention.
Prof Steve was an awesome guy teaching a demanding Calculus course. He challenged students while staying positive and light. I spent hours a week studying and growing as a student, and it was worth it.
What can I say? Shalit is the absolute man. He is very tricky though, sometimes too tricky... He doesn't like to show his cards too much.
Shalit is an amazing instructor! I have anxiety when it comes to calc and he really encouraged me a lot. He makes time to help you during office hours & has study sessions prior to major exams. I miss taking his class! His lectures are detailed, informative, & his tangents are hilarious! Just be prepared to study hard and don't fall behind!
You can get an easy A if you go to class every day, do homework, and pay attention to his lectures. He has a nice handwriting. His lectures are clear and organized. His tests are tough but he give you the review and hints. Quizzes every week (mostly on monday)
He's a good teacher, but he can be condescending. He's very clear on what he wants. If you're taking calc with him make sure you brush up on your trig. He'll assume you remember all of it. If you want to pass there are easier options, but if you want to learn it I recommend him.
I had Shalit for both Calculus I and Calculus II, and I would highly recommend his class if you want to learn calc. He gives meticulous notes and great explanations, and there is always a looming assignment, and his tests can be hard. He really puts in effort to make the class challenging and to make sure students know their stuff. Tough but great!
At times he can seem a bit cocky and condescending, but overall he is a great professor who will definitely help you with any confusion you have about the material. His lectures are super organized. He is very clear on what you need to know for tests and quizzes and he does a very good job preparing students for the final exam. Pretty funny also
Shalit is amazing! Great sense of humor, fair and always willing to help you understand what's expected! Don't whine about your grade if you skip class or don't ask for help.
Don't interrupt his lectures. Ask for help after you have attempted the material. I got my money's worth. Uses up the whole class time to teach, hand grades homework, tests and quizzes, always available. Very clear, precise, you know exactly what's expected, tough tests, tough grader, picky about notation, jokes are condescending. Super teacher.
I've taken him for 3 math courses. I stick with him because his notes are VERY organized and clear. I just need his notes in order to understand the subject. He is always available and quick to answer emails. He loves math and is funny. Tests can be difficult. Must do book homework.
Is he hard? Yes, but it more of the material being difficult than Shalit. Hewant his students to succeed, so don't be afraid to ask for help! Had him for Calc I and thought he was the worst, then I realized he was doing an amazing job &that set up of Calc I is just that intense. Same story for Calc II. He is very thorough with lectures.
I thought he was really awesome! He's completely sarcastic, which is the kind of teacher I like. However, some students don't like him because of it. He is a pretty tough grader, but he tells you everything you need to know. He's definitely there to help if you need it. Skipping class is not the smartest thing to do for this class.
Hands down the best person you could learn calculus from at UNO. Incredibly clear and thorough with what he teaches and what he wants from the students.
Great teacher! Very specific with what he wants. Just make sure you practice a lot to pass.
Shalit is tough for sure, but an amazing professor. Taking him for the third time this semester. If you need to well in your math classes, def take Shalit. He will not hand out A's, but you will leave the class knowing all you need to know and probably end up with an A on the final.
Great teacher but hard! Make sure you do your textbook homework to help you study for his tests in order to succeed. Ask for help if you need it and he will help you out in his office and in the tutor center. A pleasure to have.
Three descriptions that best describe Mr. Shalit: a decent teacher, a tough grader, very unpredictable (with an emphasis on being a tough grader). Although somewhat approachable during his office hours, he can be very rude and condescending if you ask him questions during the lecture. I would recommend him only for Math majors.
Took him for Calc 1,2 and 3. If you have to take all three calc courses then I suggest start taking him for Calc 1. It will be tough after taking another teacher. Very thorough with notes. Expect to do all the assigned homework. If you don't do it you won't pass. Can be condescending during class so go see him in the tutor center or his office.
Super tough and demanding but fair. Stresses the details. Very organized notes. He's very brilliant in math and I think he sometimes gets frustrated when teaching people that are not near his level. Recognizes and appreciates hard work nonetheless. Best math teacher I had at UNO. Maybe the best teacher of any subject. Btw I hate math classes
Shalit is by far the best teacher UNO has to offer, and yes he is a tough grader almost to near perfection, amazing lecture notes, seat at the front of the class, his hand write is sometimes hard to see. Always do the textbook homework is not for a grade, but they will help you succeed.
Probably the best and most fair college professor I have ever had. Superb lecture notes, very clear. Do the textbook homework, it really helps. He appreciates good work ethic. A little sassy and sarcastic but I enjoyed it. Go to class or you won't do well. He's a tough grader but will give reasonable partial credit.
If you slack off at the beginning of the semester, you're in for a tough ride. But don't worry, he is a fair, easy-to-work with, and caring professor if you are willing to put in the work. Make sure you do the textbook homework, sit in the front of the class, attend everyday, and take good notes, otherwise you won't pass and life will get harder.
Very specific in lectures and easy to understand the material! He may seem hard at first, but he is very helpful!
TAKE SHALIT! He's seriously so worth it. He's super sarcastic and has a big ego at times, but it's nothing to worry about. He really breaks the work down for you and knows what he's talking about. I plan on taking him for all my Calc courses. Seriously, if you don't take Shalit, you're screwing up.
Had him during the fall semester of 2018. Did horrible on all of his tests because he taught everything too fast and got mad if anyone asked any questions. I would never take him again because I had to reteach everything to myself after every lesson.
Best lecturer I've ever had. He is clear &concise, presenting information in a very well thought out chronology and frequency putting special emphasis on important aspects. If you attend, are attentive, and do all the HW and extra TB problems, you will thrive. Weekly quizzes at the end of recitation are a good for your grade. No questions necessary
I had Shalit for Calc I, and while he was still condescending, I thought he was a great teacher for Calc I. Fast forward to now, I'm taking him for Calc III. Still a condescending narcissist, but not the great teacher he was in Calc I. Moves too fast and talks down to students. He needs to take a deep breath and treat the class as equals.
You dont feel like you can ask him questions without being judged or embarrassed so people usually dont ask questions which hurts them in class, including me. Says everything we do is easy when it is in fact not. Quizzes every week are tough.
Really hard and confusing lectures. If you need any help, he treats you like an idiot. Would NOT recommend !!!
Dr. Shalit, while difficult with his graded assignments, genuinely wants his students to learn the material. He gives clear, concise lectures, and even gives a list of textbook problems he strongly recommends you do for each section. Despite being rather snarky during class, he does genuinely care about his students if they put in the effort.
Professor Shalit is, hands down, the best professor I have ever had. I have been to school in three states, he is the best. Don't take him if you're sensitive, can't take a joke, or wanna slack off. His lectures are extremely informative and his style of teaching is fantastic. As long as you can do the work expected of you, you can succeed.
Honestly the best math teacher I have ever had. I took Saxton for a math class and was so lost, but when I started Shalit' calculus course I finally understood what was going on and started to enjoy the subject. He is particular about being late, so always try to come a little early. If you do the homework and study for the course, it isn't too bad
Really harsh grader, also mean in class but very good at explaining concepts in class, way nicer in office hours, focus less on WA and more on the textbook problem list, go to his office hours a lot to have him explain things/know who you are
Took him for calc 2 & 3. Great at teaching the material. MUST do the textbook HW to pass (for any teacher you take this is necessary to pass calc 2&3). He's only mean when you ask him questions while he's in the middle of a problem. He is also can be a pretty tough grader at times so make sure you study hard.
The lectures are fast paced and often hard to follow. He has extremely high expectations of his students. He always asks for questions, yet treats you like you're dumb if you ask. His test are random and doesn't follow the textbook. Ex) adds T/F questions and randomly stops. And if you email him any Q's, he's VERY Inconsiderate. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Really great lecturer. Explains things clearly and thoroughly. He can be a little sassy when responding to questions but I honestly dont think he means to come off that way. He really wants students to understand and do well. Tests are fair and test understanding of subject matter rather than just being tedious and difficult.
Professor Shalit BELITTLES you if you ask questions in class. I had to teach myself other methods to solve problems and he counted it all as wrong even though my answer was correct. It is HIS WAY or you FAIL. Do not take him at all cost, it will be the most ridiculous waste of money!
I've never had a more childish professor. I consider myself to be quite the good student, but Steven sucks any remaining ounces of joy out of Calc2. From treating students like children, to strictly grading, to whining multiple times a class, to annoyingly boasting about his Honor Court position, Steven is the worst option if you are trying to pass
Shalit is nit-picky on some specifics in grading, but is overall good about partial credit. His lectures are clear and concise, provided you have an excellent recall for all previous math classes. He will not address anything from lower level classes, and will basically mock you for not knowing. I dislike him intensely, but I did learn a lot.
Great lecturer, perhaps one of the best math lecturers I've ever had. Terrible teacher. He doesn't seem to know the difference nor care. He's rude and condescending, and pretty much assumes that everyone will be a terrible student. Don't take it personally when he belittles you for asking a question, whether in class or by email.
Shalit is one of the best math professors at UNO. He gives clear note packets that help teach you the material. Now he is rude when answering questions about previous course's material, but he is a great teacher. If you can deal with the attitude you will learn a lot.
He a is very fast pace and when simple question are asked he gets slightly Aggravated
Professor Shalit absolutely knows what he's doing. It was evident that he was teaching a course way below his skill level. His lectures are extremely clear, and, even though he can be curt sometimes, his explanations are extraordinarily thorough and his thought process is perfectly logical and easy to follow. Overall a fantastic teacher.
Best math professor I've had. Very well organized lectures and notes, weekly quizzes. Assigns a fair amount of homework and a lot of optional practice problems. Strict about notation. Can be snarky about other professors, especially engineering and physics. Don't take it too seriously. If you want to master calculus, take Shalit.
I actually liked Steven Shalit, he is a bit sarcastic, sassy, and grades tough but the man knows his math. If you go to class, pay attention, ask questions, go to office hours.. then you will do good. I did get a C but I take full responsibility for my grade.
He is a good professor but very tough on his students. He is a fair grader and he clearly wants the students to pass. However, he is not good at encouraging students.
super tough !
Great professor in my opinion. Explained everything well in class. Gave us study guides for every test and even gave us a sheet with all the formulas we needed to know for the final exam. I would have taken him for calculus 1 also but my schedule conflicted the time for his class.
Rude, condescending, and needs to rethink why he's teaching. Ask questions and get ridiculed. Doesn't look you in the eye. Will spend several minutes explaining why he won't go over prerequisite material instead of taking a minute to remind of earlier concepts. Expects immediate understanding of lecture material. No apparent respect for students.
Mr. Shalit clearly has great mathematical abilities and strong conceptual understanding. However, his responses to questions feel dismissive, making students hesitant to speak up. I appreciate his focus on precise notation...but sloppy, lazy students don't. One-on-one convos allow you to see that he's a light-hearted person outside of math :)
Professor Steven Shalit's class was awful. He's condescending, often saying “y'all should know this,” even in a beginner class. He's strict, unsupportive, and piles on difficult assignments and tests. His rushed, unclear lectures make learning hard. Avoid his class if possible—you'll regret it!
Do not take this guy. You will not pass he expects you to know everything and grades everything harshly. When taking test if its not his way then expect not to pass the class. Also attendance is mandatory and its straight lecture from beginning to end of class. Take all MATH classes online.
Definitely a tough professor but a good one. He's very passionate about math as a subject and he likes to go into detail during his classes. If you respect him and communicate he does the same. Very understanding guy when I had to be out for 2 weeks due to surgery, and allowed us to record his lectures if needed. Would take him again for sure.
Unwelcoming attitude, doesn't like questions, or clarifying things in general. Gets really frustrated when he makes a mistake on the board. Generally not good at teaching. He made math boring and discourages curiosity. He constantly insults the class. Every other professor I've had at UNO has been great besides him
Challenging course, but Prof. Shalit is a thorough teacher. Attend lectures, use the free textbook, and try Unstuck ai - it really helped me stay on track. Overall, a worthwhile class if you're willing to put in the effort.
Just skip the lectures. He's condescending and spends half the lecture insulting the classes instead of teaching. If you ask a question in class, you will get shut down quickly. There's an attendance sheet but it doesn't affect the overall grade at all. If you have to take his class, just focus on the online material as it's the same as the tests.
Might be the funniest math teacher I've ever had. Dont skip his class, as you never know what kind of crazy things he will say, and he gives good instructions. The course isn't too hard, but dont be afraid to ask questions. Communication w/ him is key. Bit of a stickler about attendance, but as long as you put in effort to learn you should pass.
Shalit is awful sometimes, he has a ego when you ask him a question. I do nottttt recommmendddd. Although i will say he is a pretty good lecturer.
He does a very good job of teaching the material, but he can be rather...aggressive. If you ask a question even after he asks if anyone has a question, he gets very hostile and belittling. Print out the study guides before every class to take notes on and you will do just fine.
