Great personality, but TERRIBLY unrealistic expectations. Take P/F or Audit!!!
take notes on every term he writes on the board! Skim the books for ppl&places
so hard!memorize every word out of his mouth-interesting,though worth it if p/f
Difficult, but he's straight to the point. Doesn't like stupidity!
Sit back and laugh your head off as he makes fun of the class. Comedy
great class, but time-consuming, lots of work. his slides are great :)
Hardest tests in department, but youll learn alot and its interesting.
one of my favorite history profs u must do the reading, awesome class!!
Exams focus on minutia, his class should be worth 6 credits. Good lecturer.
Sexy as Hell but very hard class. He is so funny though.
Great class! Very interesting, but relatively hard tests.
this guy is the biggest beast! i got an A! hahaha! you will work your ass off
Awesome class, really great lectures!! He really knows the subject matter
Take one of his classes before you graduate, they're hard but worth it.
Hardest teacher ever, had to drop to P/F, awesome guy, interesting class
hard as anything, but real interesting. do not fall asleep or
Hates his life, wishes he was Indiana Jones. Cynical, made a girl cry. ****.
history genious, don't take unless req'd bcuz u will probably fail
Hardest class at this school. He is funny as **** though, best class I've taken.
Hardest class, hardest professor I've ever taken. Not a good professor, tries to fail everyone he can. Fails 50% of class, I've never gotten below a C, and I am going to fail his class. AWFUL!
he is god. his classes are the most demanding in the history field. he clearly outlines what he wants for his exams, which is really everything he has written on the board. go to class. this guy is a treat to listen to. also girls say he is hot
This prof is the one to avoid at UD! Everyone talks about how hard he is, and how many people he fails.
Hard Teacher, GOOD class. Very interesting class. Must go to lecture in order to pass the tests. In the tests you must put EVERY little thing he mentioned in lecture in order to pass. ~good luck~ ;D
stay away from this one if you don't want to fail.hard grader, everything has to be his way or nothing, unless required don't take
Very cool guy. You will want to call him Dr. Indiana Jones but his name is Dr. Sidebotham. Pay attention and take perfect notes. 3 exams-all essay and matching/short id. Use EVERY word he writes on the board in your papers and 3rd is take home! I got a B.
Hardest class I've taken @ college, but definitely my favorite. Only class I never fell asleep in. So interesting to listen to.
Great teacher. Totally Indiana Jones man. He's incredibly smart, obviously loves the material he teaches. But he's hard as hell. I loved the class, very interesting lectures, but I flunked. I'd prob even go to one of his lectures if I wasn't graded.
The best lecturer I've had- EVER. He's a hard prof. but definitely funny, knows his stuff, and I love going to class... Would probably go even if I wasn't registered. Need to study a week ahead of each test, know ALL that's written on the board.
very demanding professor. SOOOO arrogant! His lectures are awesome.... I felt like everything was a story that I had to come back to. Not much heavy thinking but intense memorization. Don't take if have tough semester
I have no idea how anyone said anything good about this guy. Angriest man I have ever seen and takes it out on his students tests. Every answer better be dead on perfect or you fail.
Sidebotham is the DEVIL!!!! This guy made my last semester at UD a living hell. You literally can't miss a single word in both the lectures and the readings or you're pretty much screwed. If you like being stressed out, then you'll love this class.
this dude is not cool. hes so hard on his tests that if you dont mention every single word to ever leave his mouth youre gunna fail. hes pretty proud about that too. good luck and dont take this course
Took Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome courses. Loved both, but started out badly in the 1st course till I grasped what was needed. Make sure you know all the term he writes on the board, or you are sunk. Definitely Indiana Jones.
He gives you prior warning in the syllabus that nearly 50% of his students either fail or receive a D. He is not doing this as a joke. Take the advice, memorize all the terms or you will be in for a rude awakening.
This guy should be fired. Disgusting class.
The lectures are clear and very interesting, and he knows what he's talking about, but he acts like he has some sort of grudge against the world and is unnessecarily rude to the students. You should also remember to write down EVERY word he EVER said on the test. This is NOT an exaggeration!
This guy is horrible. He flat out calls people morons in class. I took the class pass/fail and I was glad I did. He literally has given Ds and Fs to over half of his students in 23 years (he quoted this stat in the syllabus and constantly referred to it...) Interesting course, take P/F!
The people who have bad comments to make about this professor are obviously in the 50% that failed. On our first exam there was 1-A, 22-B, 20-C, 13-D, 24-F. So what he says is the truth, half the class fails. It all comes down to doing the work, if you go to class your fine. WRITE OUT ESSAYS BEFORE!
Arrogant prick.Shouldn't be teaching.Signed up for Hist class, didn't know it would be all archeology.Spends every class showing pics of caves. Arrive early to copy terms. He's exceptionally rude.Anal on tests. I went to every class, studied my ass off and still failed. I'm a hist major w/ gd grades.
His class is not easy, but he is extremely smart and you will actually learn something. Go to every class and take good notes. You're only in college once, you might as well learn something.
DROP THIS CLASS NOW!I took it this past semester and although it was an interesting class the guy is a terrible teacher- you have to regurgitate every word he says or lose massive amounts of points. DROP IT! Stay far away from his classes. Drop it! Automatic GPA reducer, no matter how hard you try.
This class is awesome, but the work is hard, people that fail are just not doing the studying or not showing up to class. Show up + take notes + write out essays + know terms = good test grades. Final is a take home.
this dude sucks. hes a dick to anyone and everyone in the class. hell flat out tell kids theyre stupid. he fails half his class every year. dont take his class, ever.
He's extremely knowledgable about the subject matter, you will def. learn alot; I did. You can do well if you study very hard. Wants to know EVERY detail on tests, reading and class are def. a must. Missed a C by a % pt. Test grading scale doesn't make sense-blank test would = -points.
AWFUL PROFESSOR! DO NOT take his class. He is COMPLETE JERK!
A cranky curmudgeon, this man would rather dig in the dirt than teach, and he decides to release all his pent-up frustration on his students. Do not take this course unless you have the rare ability to regurgitate every word that comes out of someone's mouth. No curves. No extra credit. No pity.
the most interesting class i have ever taken. however more than half the class gets an honest-to-god F.i went to every class, hung on his every word, and did the reading. Still i inched by with a C.it was the first time i have recieved less than an A in a history class.but it was worth it.
the class is really interesting but you really have to take notes and do the readings. everyone talks about failing and that he is a hard grader, but it is possible to get a good grade, i got a 99 on one of his tests. if your not interested in the material then dont take the class!!
he's a bit of a wack-job... very tough too. he hates everything about modern culture and lets you know about it. But I did learn a lot and he was very helpful in office hours.
I took this guy 2 semesters ago and I am just checking what people wrote on him. I still dont believe anyone has anything to good to say about him. Angriest, most unloved man I have ever met.
Most intersting class I have taken. Yes, he's hard, but actually has real life experience and knows what he's talking about. Expects you to know alot for the test, but you will actually come out of this class having learned something.
I took every class Dr. Sidebotham taught when I was at UD. The best teacher I have ever had. It's been 20 years and I still have a passion for ancient history, even though I did not make it my profession. And that's all due to him. Someday, I think I'll tell him what an impact he had on me!
sidebotham's classes are difficult, but if you work at the material you'll learn alot. he can be a jerk but only if you're lazy and you don't work. my advice is to put the time in, and you'll get a good grade.
At first I didn't take this class too seriously because I missed the part on the syllabus where it says "half the class fails every semester". First test, I got a 36%. After that, I went to every class and did all the readings, ultimately winding up with a B- in the class. Tests are easy if you do the work and take detailed notes. Id take him again
I learned more in this class than every other class in my 4 yrs put together. He is telling you the truth when he says u have to come to every class and do all the readings. Just do it all and the tests will be easy. Half the class fails everytime but its just bc they are too lazy to do all the work. its worth it, hes the smartest teacher at UD.
BAD! Stay away from this professor- He does not want his classes to learn, he wants them to fail. Tyrant in the classroom, makes fun of questions from his students, reading lists are impossible to keep up with & important for ESSAY TESTS. I think he rates himself on here too- there's no way anyone I know would call him a good professor.
The only students that give Sidebothem a bad rating are lazy asses that think his class is too hard because you actually have to attend and do the work. He give you the essays before the exam so all you have to do is study and take good notes. He knows his stuff, best teacher at Delaware.
I learned more in his class than in any other class I've ever taken. He is somewhat of a pompous ass and a bit cocky, but he knows his stuff. Exams are HARD, you have to come to every single class and take down good notes, plus do all readings. He loves his details and chronology. I would take him again in a heartbeat--he is a great teacher!
I took ancient religion and civilization with this man. He is a cruel sadist who uses a marginally interesting class to punish those not willing to devote more than its fair share of attention to it. I did reasonably well in the other history classes, my major, but I remember this man 10 years after I graduated only because never did I work so hard for so little. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
sidebotham is a cranky, cynical old man. but he reminds me of indiana jones, which makes him really hot. he is incredibly smart and a wonderful teacher - he also tells you exactly what he wants you to do to pass the class, so the only excuse you have for failing is laziness.
opinions are across the board with this guy, but my honest opinion is that he's a cranky embittered old man who has a vendetta against all females and most college students. i quite literally studied my ass off for his exams and wrote a hell of a paper, and in the end was one of the highest ranked in the class... but still nearly failed. only humanities class I EVER did this poorly in. NO chance for extra credit. BUT to be fair, he does want to help out future archeologists. but he'd rather be out digging.
you can learn more from Sidebotham than all of your teachers at this univeristy combined...if you have any interest in the class he teaches, take it! tests are only hard if you DONT go to class....all tests follow same format...include ALL TERMS for essay questions and split the readings with somebody else...very possible to get an A
Really interesting class, good prof, a little condescending at times. Tests are hard, but not impossible. I've gotten Bs on all of them, and I've studied exactly how he told me to. I'd take him again.
BEST CLASS EVER! He is very straight forward from the first day of class, if you do the work you can get an A, if you don't you will fail. He clearly knows a great deal about what he is teaching. Lectures are very interesting and the slides he uses are cool to look at. He gives you the test questions a week before the test! So easy Take his class
Real great teacher. Goes fast, but knows what he is talking about, in depth. If you can't quite keep up in class just go to office hours. Extremely accessible and str8 forward, and doesn't mind repeating himself too much. He is the way teachers should be. If you do the work, you'll learn alot. I would take his classes again.
Very condescending, don't bother asking questions he'll just laugh at you for not knowing as much as him. He turns a class of very interesting subject matter into a personal power trip-- needs to stop teaching and go back to digging, a very bitter man with no teaching skills at all. DO NOT TAKE FOR YOUR HUMANITIES COURSE !!!!!!! STAY AWAY !!!!!!!!!
Class:goes fast.GO TO ALL!Take clear/detailed notes. Teacher:knows EVERYTHING.Straight Forward. Office Hours: USE THEM! check notes against his, ask questions about anything. Tests: Follow 100% of your notes. Prepare in advance. Rating: Great guy, great class. Keep in mind:Covering stone age to ISLAM... Thousands of years. Gotta cram at some point.
good class
Very intimidating class. Sidebotham has absolutely been there, done that; he's like a surly Indiana Jones with slides to illustrate his travels and back his lecture content. Speed of lectures is FAST, take as detailed notes as possible. Not an easy grader, expects all points from class translated to test; little room for error. He will fail people.
An amazing teacher, one of the most informative classes ever. However, he knows he's that good and his arrogance is overwhelming. If you ask a question, be prepared for him to put you down before answering. Take notes on all you read and memorize everything and if you're lucky you'll be in the top 50% who gets a C or above.
had him for 338 and 341. He's smarter than you and makes sure you know it. If you show any genuine interest in his class he will love you though. Take lots of notes, and make sure to work in groups for the exams. Yes, you will hate him and the class, but you will learn more than most other classes.
This class is really, really hard. He takes points off for every vocab word you do not use that HE THINKS you should-he gives 2 pages of it a class. There are 3 tests and I have never, never gotten such a low grade; I couldn't have prepaired any more than I had for the 2nd test and STILL got a 69.Though a very interesting class I suggest against it
Don't take this class if you don't have A LOT of time to dedicate to it. It takes tons of studying and he expects you to know everything when it's time for the test. It was a struggle but I never lost interest in the material. He knows his stuff and I learned a lot. But it takes a LOT of work just to pass.
Very hard class....went almost everyday and got a D
Hardest class I have ever taken at UD. Very difficult to get a good grade on his exams. He is a good guy, engaging, and knowledgeable, but I have never gotten such a low grade. If you decide to take him, either have a lot of time to dedicate to his class or take it pass fail.
His philosophy is that there is grade inflation at colleges, and he does his best to avoid that in his class. He expects too much for an undergraduate course. He's an ok guy, but a bad teacher. His lectures are scattered. It is impossible to get a decent grade in this class. If you want to take it, do pass fail as I did, if you care about your GPA!
The goal of this class seemed to just be memorization of every term put on the board and every term from the readings. The subject matter is extremely interesting, but the tests are extremely tough. The tests were nothing more than a regurgitation of all terms. While that may be how he chooses to get his point across, its a bad way to teach history
I had him in the same semester for 340 & 243. I love history, Ancient History is what I want to do. I learned so much in both classes, I feel like I could write a book on both subjects. I failed the class. The tests are impossible. Don't put yourself through him. I wish I looked the ratings on here before I enrolled! DON'T DO IT!!
This professor really knows his stuff. He's actually been/lived in all the places he talks about. He is a really interesting prof. but be warned that his tests include all the vocab. he puts on the board, and if you don't have time to do readings i wouldnt recommend it. class isn't mandatory but you need the notes to pass. work hard and ull love it
He talks so fast! n ITs Hard to follow studied, went to every class and office hours still failed. Theres alotta of reading and note taking, and unless u kno u love ancient HIstory i suggest stay AWAY! Pretty kool guy tho.
He is the best professor at this University. I think he's way too good to be teaching there frankly. He is in the ranks of teaching at Harvard or Oxford. The administration at UoD obviously doesn't either know or respect what they have in Dr. Sidebotham.
There is nothing difficult about this class. Having said that, it does take a GREAT deal of busy work to prep for the exams. Your only requirement is to memorize the terms on the board and write them in essay form. There is little thinking required, just A LOT of memorizing. There are many better professors that waste a lot less of your time.
Easiest A in UD HIST. Here's how: he writes down a list of terms on the board at the beginning of each class. Write them all down. Take copious notes on every single thing he says about any of those terms. Never miss class. Skim the readings and pick out major people and places that were conspicuously absent from lecture. Memorize everything.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS W/ THIS PROFESSOR. I am an Ancient Greek & Roman Studies MAJOR and I took Ancient Near Eastern & Greek History course and HE FAILED ME. I am very well-versed in these topics. I did ALL the readings, went to EVERY single class, took METICULOUS notes, went to office hours. Do yourself a favor: STAY AWAY!
He is the single hardest professor I've ever had- prior to him I'd never gotten below a B in any history class. Attendance isn't technically mandatory, but if you miss a class, you *will* fail. That said, he's a brilliant teacher and professor, and it is well worth visiting his office hours.
Professor Sidebotham is an amazing teacher. His class is NOT hard, it just takes preparation and I recommend it if interested in ancient history. You're kinda expected to be there 10 minutes early to copy down the list of terms for the lecture. These terms correspond to an essay question on a test, they are the key to passing. Memorize them all.
He is an amazing professor. This class is not easy and takes a lot of time so be prepared to do a lot of reading. Even though I struggled, I loved going to the class because he is so knowledgeable since he's been everywhere around the world. He expects a lot from his students but as long as you are willing to work hard you will get a good grade.
Great professor. Enthusiastic about his discipline which is whom I would like to learn from. Learned a ton from him & he was open and forthcoming with information. Like everything else it is what you make of it. He's obviously an expert in the subject matter & seems like he doesn't have time for people not truly interested. Gladly take another
Absolutely positively do NOT take this guys class unless you have no life outside of History. He totally knows his stuff and has spent most of his life researching his discipline, which is awesome but if you aren't a History buff don't bother taking his class because there's no way youre going to pass. I'm a history minor and still failed!
He is an excellent professor. He's been there, done that, and has immense knowledge in his field. While he's got a well earned reputation for difficulty, this doesn't mean doom. Do your reading, study hard, and use office hours to your advantage. At the end of the semester I could not believe how much I learned about Ancient Rome.
This guy is an amazing teacher. He absolutely knows everything about what he teaches. BUt he is a very hard grader, and his quizzes and exams are hard. You need to study! He doesn't put power points up, so be ready to take notes. and no matter what, ALWAYS RIGHT DOWN THE TERMS ON THE BOARD! its very important to passing his class.
I actually took Dr. Sidebotham's class in the 1990s. I've never worked so hard for a D+, but it was STILL the most interesting class I've EVER taken. I agree he is difficult, but if this is what you're interested in, this guy is the one to take the classes with. After further education on my part, I have a very serious appreciation for his talent.
His is a great professor who is fascinated with his material. His exams are difficult but he is the only teacher who tells you EXACTLY what he wants on the exams and the readings are a must. His lectures are old school slides so class attendance is necessary but its also fun. He is a funny guy who will try to help you if you aren't doing well.
I got an A-, his class is super easy if you just do the busy work required. Like there is absolutely nothing required from you other than to just spit the terms from lecture back out dring thetest. USE A RECORDER... it saved my life!
Sidebotham is incredibly well versed in the subject matter of that course. If you go to class, ask questions, DO THE READINGS, and go to office hours with any questions, you'll pass. He's very helpful, I changed my grading to P/F and passed with his help. He tells you exactly what he wants on exams and all of it is in the readings/covered in class.
I thought this class was very interesting. if you stay on top of the work he gives you its really not that bad. you just have to be good at memorizing a lot of terms. if you aren't someone who can listen to a history lecture and take notes without zoning out then this isn't the class for you.
Challenging class that will teach you a lot about an interesting subject. I think I learned more in this course than any other I've taken. As long as you put a couple of hours a week in to do the reading and study, you'll be fine.
Interesting course, learned a lot, especially because I have History minor, however EXTREMELY METICULOUS. Exams are CHALLENGING and require many hours of reading various documents and books. Text use is heavy and hard to read, plus it is hard to tell what he expects you to get from readings. VERY DETAIL ORIENTED. quizzes every Friday, lectures well
He lectures very well. If you have any love for history you need to take one of his upper levels. He is straightforward and tells you exactly what he wants; he even gives you the test essay topics before hand. Quizzes are every Friday, so just do the readings and you will own it. One hell of a lecturer, highly recommend Ancient Rome.
He's a fantastic lecturer who manages to be both clear and interesting even when talking about sometimes dry topics. His tests are tough, but he makes sure you have all the material you need to do well, so long as you don't underestimate them. As a warning: His essay questions are graded purely on content, write everything you can on a subject.
I put more work into this class than I have in any other class in my 4 years and I got my worst grade ever. Wrote over 30 pages, he grades a "rough draft" & a final paper. His comments on my rough draft barely helped me improve my grade on the final, if there were more things he wanted improved he could've said so. But WWII material was interesting
Loved the lectures, very knowledgeable and very inspiring. Great Prof. The issue is he will find a term in the fine print and expect you to know. If you are not concerned about your GPA than take it but if you are looking to increase your GPA do not take it. 3/4 of the class withdrew from the class. It was a horrible.
I loved this class! There are difficult weekly quizzes, but only if you don't pay attention & don't study. They help on the exams. Do the readings - it'll hurt if you don't. I learned so much & Sidebotham brought in POVs that aren't conventionally taught. He spent a lot of time in the regions studied & it shows through photos on PP slides.
He can be quite disorganized in the way he presents the materials. He seems to expect us to absorb more than he says/presents in class. I also find him to be condescending which I don't find particularly endearing.
Sidebotham is absolutely great. He is passionate, knows his stuff, engages with his students, and an absolute gem of a teacher. I love history, but I don't enjoy reading extensively. You will need to read quite a bit. He doesn't take attendance, but missing lectures is bad for your grade, but also because you miss out on such great content in class
Attendance not mandatory but you will not pass if you skip. Weekly quizzes, so you need to put work in to study. A lot of reading. Fair grader with good feedback. Incredibly inspiring and such a smart man, his lectures are interesting, funny, and full of information.
Quizzes are manageable if you are willing to memorize large volume of terms. Scores on tests do not correlate with how well you do on quizzes. 6 essay prompts handed out a week before your essay exam. You get 2 of them random and must spit back every single term that relates or you lose a point. Unrealistic expectations on these essay exams.
Professor Sidebotham gave amazing lectures about topics that would otherwise seem boring. However, participation was a big part of the grade for this Honors colloquium class. The grading criteria for papers wasnt really apparent until after the first rough draft was already graded, but always helps out with corrections.
There is a reasonable amount of work considering this was an honors colloquium class. There were weekly readings and three fairly short research papers. Make sure to participate actively as it comprises half of your grade. Professor Sidebotham is a very tough grader, but he is just as helpful and interesting as he is tough.
Absolutely fantastic lecturer, extremely helpful office hours. Doesn't grade attendance but it's critical. WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING HE SAYS! You'll get a B on the first quiz (weekly) and As on the rest. Readings are not strictly necessary, they're only 30% of the three exams, and even then you can ace those sections w/out reading anything, like I did!
If you are interested in the subject matter and don't mind lectures, I would recommend this class. He is funny and the only grades are 11 quizzes (Weekly) and 3 major tests. If you take good notes, these are not too bad. He has decades of real archeological experience and is extremely knowledgeable.
He is very passionate about the class and his much experience to share if you are interested in a career path in history/archeology. Class is not mandatory but YOU NEED TO GO!!! I had to miss class for family reasons but he helped me get notes so easily. Tough grader but worth it if you are interested.
It's almost impossible to wing it in any of his classes. He doesn't even have to grade attendance because if you ditch even a single lecture you're guaranteed to lose points on the topic you missed when tested on it. Slides have minimal text, you're dependent on writing down everything he says to do well. Very knowledgeable guy, though.
I had to take it for the history requirement and this class was all that was left. His slides only show pictures and he just says random things to the point where I did not even know what to copy down. The readings are so long and on top of my other classes I had no time. He is such a harsh grader and the class is only from tests.
Tough class, but worth it if you're interested in the subject. Mandatory attendance, lots of quizzes and exams. Use Unstuck AI and the free textbook to stay on top of things.
