Very intelligent but hard to follow at times. Available to help always but seems unfocused at times. He said he wishes this was an online class.
Well, hard to state this prof. in this class, because he is the only one teaching this class for F'03, 3 group presentation projects and exam are all M/C, don't be scared if you see his mid-term with 80 M/C..>_<..
3 group presentations which are ok if you have a good group. His lectures are confusing, seems like he has a lot to say but gets stuck on his words. Just show up for group presentations and tests, study by following his study guide and the the book.
Hard to follow during lecture
You WONT LEARN ANYTHING!!! This guy sucks. He's disorganized and what he lectures on, doesn't really help for preparation for the exams. Also very boring, bring laptop if u have one. Howver, he does curve!
This guy confuses the hell out of you and then tries to make you feel stupid. He comes in looking like he spent all night anlyzing surveys. If you're stuck in his class, read the book and ignore everything he says. Don't even try, it'll confuse you more.
He comes to class like he's been tortured reviwing student's papers. His lecture is a mess. Tried his online class and he is extremly slow in returning email. But a nice though.
He is not so organized but he is an easy teacher. Grading is very fair. 3 group project presentation no homework. Grades by curve.I would recommend him. Study guide helps a lot for his exam. Very nice person.
Please pay attention to his facial expression. He comes in looking like he has been tortured by people. He is very unorganized and he tries to stuff everything in this tiny folder. He is very UNCLEAR, you can never understand him. Just do his study guide and you will at least pass the class.
He is very easy teacher.Always ready to help.Study his study guide and you will pass the class.NO homework but 3 presentation in big groups.I would recommend this professor.
Good teacher. But you WILL get carpal tunnel from his online class. (6-8 pages of HW a week)
Very difficult to follow, but this is due to students not reading book. Tough class. Grade based on 2 mids, 1 final, 1 group pres. Tests based on definitions, so just memorize terms in book. Curves generously. Tests are still hard, though. Teacher very accesible. Must be excited about marketing research to do well. Good guy in general, but hard.
study guide is not helpful, study everything in the bold letters for midterm1&2. Final midterm, not helpful, study all midterm study guides 1 and 2, and new terms..For the group presentation, pick your groups carefully, my group lag so bad!!!
Take his on-line class. You have HW due once a week but assignments are easy. One group project which is easy if you prepare ahead of time. He gives a study guide for exams & most of the questions are from it. If you can't find a term, he will tell you where to find it or give you the definition. Got an A in class.
The first 2 weeks I wanted to pull my hair out cause he was so unorganized and confusing. Ended up sticking it out and the class wasn't to hard
He was unorganized, unclear and hard to be reached for answers. The work was confusing and 6 pages were required each week, the headache of a group presentation during the SUMMER - not to mentioned two midterms and a final. Nevertheles, once I caught the gist of things - it was a free ride all the way. Great professor but it is mostly self-study!
His lectures were interesting but it had nothing to do with the exams. You will pass the class if you study his Exam Guidlines. He posted it online so you have plenty of time to study for it. He tries to be helpful in explaining course materials. I'd recommend this professor.
His online class wasn't too bad. You only have to write a couple pages a week to receive almost full credit (Don't bother writing the full 5+ he asks for, it's a waste). Also had to meet outside of class for video project which was semi-difficult. Overall though, much better than taking an actual class where you have to meet once or twice a week
Online class: Very nice professor, will do his best to help you (eventhough he may not be too helpful). Mainly self-studying through reading and doing weekly assignments; pretty unorganized but directions can be figured out; START YOUR GROUP VIDEO ASSIGNMENT EARLY; he may seem out of it but he's actually one of those geniuses who aren't too social.
Trust me i got a B. Teacher is unorganized. Tests are moderate and article readings are important(about 10 questions from test are from articles). Use the study guide provided online and you should be okay. He is pretty generous with the curve for tests, so that also helps. Also, there is no homework besides reading, which is pretty nice.
Slightly unorganized but if you have a question, he has an answer. He was very helpful to me and my groups but you have to get his attention early on in the semester. DO THE STUDY GUIDES and you will be fine on the tests.
I was actually interested in this class beforehand, but Silver is maybe the worst business teacher @ SJSU. SO UNORGANIZED w/ no structure! Dont be surprised if you get lost in this class. Still a lot better than Werbel though. Dont even bother going to lectures but lab is important. Just study terms on study guide for midterms and you'll pass.
Class is hard to follow at times but if something is unclear and you ask he is very kind, knowledgeable, and helpful.Do well on the biz sim and do studyguide and read articles easy 2 pass.If you like a lot of structure to your class this prof isnt 4 u
This class can be difficult to follow. Important to ask questions every step of the way, especially in weekly labs, as that material culminates into a final group research project. Exams are curved. A study guide is given for each exam but reading and studying the book is a must in order to do well.
In this on-line class, the hardest part was preparing the video case study, but if you follow the instructions step-by-step, you'll be okay. It is also important to read and study the textbook and journal articles since both the exams and homework are based on them. Professor is not always communicative so ask lots of questions.
Silver will make you want to rip your hair out as he is the most unorganized/unprepared instructor EVAR! Exams are borderline impossible. He is no help on what he wants out of the group film project. Why does an ONLINE course have a group project anyways? HOWEVER, if you can tough it out, he grades very easy at the end. I got a B.
You have a group assignment in the lab, so you have to attend that.Gives participation points in the lecture but otherwise, lecture is worthless. You will leave this course knowing LESS than when you started. Terrible teacher, impossible exams. HOWEVER, he grades on the curve and is easy on grading in the end. I got a B.
This class is very passable. Unfortunately, I did well in his class but don't feel like I learned anything from it. He's a horrible teacher! He does little to no instruction so it's up to you if you want to learn anything in his class. I hear Professor Sibley teaches this class well. I would take Sibley's over Silver's if you have the choice.
Good luck understanding him. His thoughts are all over the place. He will try to draw them out for you, but his drawings are just as spaz. Because he grades on a curve, most likely you will pass. As far as understanding everything, read the book.
Is always a huge d$%# whenever you talk to him, borderline insulting. Unsympathetic, unorganized, and not clear at all. Tests were not hard, just read the book and study guides.
Expect to do excessive amounts of reading. average of two textbook chapters per week. In addition to an average of two (sometimes 3) assigned readings from course reader. And expect to do weekly assignments and group work and prepare for presentation (for online class? WTF!) takes a long time to answer emails. Syllabus was a mess with errors.
Rude, disorganized. Our class only meets once a week and he's cancelled at least twice. Tests are easy if you read the chapters. Waste of time in class, doesn't actually teach anything. Piled on a huge project and a paper in the last three weeks of the semester like an ass. Modules aren't hard but take a long time
Totally un-organized and doesn't keep up with the syllabus. Had a hard time answering mid-term with a practically "nill" lectures on any of the topics.
Very uninteresting class. Course had nothing to do with writing/communicating in the business world. It was basically a marketing course-all we did was play a game that simulated working in a marketing dept at a company & come up with a hypothesis that we had to create a survey for & get ppl to answer. Useless lectures. Only cool thing is he curves
He is very difficult to follow during his lectures. His homework is distantly rated to the material in the book. DOes allow notes for midterms. 2 group projects. Lots of reading
Market research isn't really that interesting to most students. Professor Silver can be unclear at times and lectures can be really long & boring; but overall, if you put some effort into this class, it's not that bad. He's helpful and you can utilize his office hrs.
Nice guy, but the entire class was confused every day. grades on a curve. ended up with a B (not exactly sure how that happened) be picky with the people you choose for your group project!
took his online course. Weekly quizzes and a few midterms that consist of 60 MC questions, all based on book. Group project is very confusing. his instructions are vague and he's a tough grader. you're randomly given a group and since you're mostly working online some do more work than others.
Having to communicate with my group and the professor electronically was so difficult. Never knew what I was learning or what the purpose of anything was. I couldn't retain anything that I was reading in class emails or project documents. I'm sure it would've been a better experience in a classroom though, nothing against the professor.
There are too much homework, We spend like 8 hours for one single homework problem also, Mystatlab is a terrible system. I recommend not taking this professor.
Class was completely online and to put it simply it was a mess. Class is difficult to navigate, the fact that there is a group project for an online class is ridiculous, and the use of Lockdown Browser with Webcam is unnerving. Would not recommend.
This class is probably the worst experience I have ever had at SJSU. This professor is little to zero help when it comes to anything, he makes MyStatLab do everything. There is never enough time for tests 80 minutes for 40 statistic questions. No visuals, videos only the examples in mystatlab. Youtube taught me everything in this class. DO NOT TAKE
He curves, but you need the textbook in order to pass.
This is the worst professor I have ever taken in my entire college career. I took him online and he offered NO instruction whatsoever. Every assignment was confusing because the instructions were incomprehensible. If you want to do well in this class, you have to read the textbook. But good luck with that - he assigns 2 long chapters each week.
Took Prof. Silver for 138 online. This is the most disorganized professor I have encountered since I have been at SJSU. Everything is unclear, his directions and announcements are riddled with spelling and punctuation errors. He takes months to grade assignments. Choose your group members carefully, dont let them make the course harder for you.
Probably the most useless professor you will run into at SJSU. You have to teach yourself the material in this class, there's no way around it. He gives TWO total lectures throughout the semester and they're irrelevant to the class. He also LOVES using ProctorU (because he's lazy). That should say enough about how much he cares.
Steven Silver is by every definition of the word, Terrible. His online class was the most unorganized class I have ever taken at any school whatsoever. The assignments have no direction, no instructions, and no criteria at all, and then he will give failing grades because they do not meet expectations. DONT TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES.
Take this class if your GPA is too high.
Not accessible, not cohesive, completely unorganized and nightmarish! Heavy workload, makes you buy the book HE wrote. Uses Respondus Lockdown+webcam requirements for tests. Not concise in anything he writes while still withholding clear instructions for HW/Projects. This is not an online easy pass at ALL!
This professor was the worst experience I'v ever had. There is no clarity within his instructions and he acts more passive aggressive in his feedback than constructive. His expectations are way beyond the level of the course. Not to mention, quizzes and exams use LockdownBrowser as well as a Webcam. There is no trust or respect for the students.
PLEASE!! DO NOT TAKE HIM! He is a very absent instructor I took his online BUS90 class and he never helped! the worst part is that you cant go back to look at your quizzes so you can practice for the big exams. Everything is from the book a lot of reading; he does not provide any other sources. Everything I have learned so far is from youtube.
IF YOU CHOOSE TO READ TODAY, LET IT BE THIS: This man is ab absolute nightmare. He writes his own Doctorate-level material and expects similar comprehension. Quizzes are weekly (WebCam+Lockdown) and are on 2 chapters (40+ pages) each. He returned each group's most recent assignment (9 groups) and blamed it on the students unknowing. FIRE this man.
This is bar-none the absolute worse professor I've ever had in my life. I honestly recall reading reviews here and thinking I could still do fine with hard work - absolutely, positively *NOT* possible. If there's anything you take seriously, it's NOT taking this class AT ALL. PERIOD. I don't care if you need an extra 3 units. Don't take this class.
DO NOT ignore the bad reviews here because you will 100% regret taking this class with him!! His directions are extremely confusing, his expectations are unclear, and his grading is extremely difficult. There are two chapters of reading every week, and you HAVE to read the book WORD FOR WORD if you want to even pass. Extremely stressful class.
This man is an absolute nightmare. His final assignment consists of a 16-17 (suggest page length) "report" using SPSS, where not once did we use the software in class. In a week's notice you are required to obtain the software and learn statistical analysis on the fly. Oh, not to mention the 15 min video required to summarize the entire process.
His instructions are SO unclear and its hard to get the full points on an assignment. You're get put into a group with random students, you do two projects throughout the semester, and you better pray your group members don't drop off the face of the earth half way thru. Weekly quizzes are easy if you read. He'll clarify things if you email him.
PLEASE JUST DONT!!!!!!!!!! IF YOU REALLY WANT TO PASS WHATEVER BUS YOU ARE TRYING TO TAKE AVOID THIS PROFESSOR! DO YOUR SELF A FAVOR DO NOT TAKE HIM! A 7AM CLASS IS WAY BETTER THAN TAKING ANY CLASS WITH HIM
Great, friendly professor that is very helpful! He is very clear, and does all he can to help you... IF you ask! So just ask! It's a fast paced class obviously because you're learning stats in a month... but if you dedicate yourself to it and seek out help, he will help you!
This professor made the material more difficult than it needed to be. The book was awful and the lectures were not helpful either. When students asked questions, the professor's answers were confusing rather than helpful. I would avoid this professor if at all possible.
The worse professor I've ever encounter! Do not take him! You have been warned! He expects you to do the most! If I would have put all my focus in this class, I would have had to sacrifice my other classes! I wish I would have came earlier and read his ratings! I failed this class! it was pointless for me to put effort!
Does not care if you pass or fail.
Worst teacher I have ever had! Homework is nothing what the quizzes and midterms are. Homework requires excel and/or scientific calculator but on the quiz and midterms, you're only allowed a four function calculator and uses lockdown browser with webcam on. Dont take him! Class average on quizzes and test are around 50-60%... currently have 65%...
Worst professor I had the displeasure of being forced to take. Took the course online and the professor was unresponsive to emails. For a summer course, the professor squeezed the same amount of work from a fall/spring semester into a 5 week course. If you have nothing but time, take this professor. If you have a life, do not come close.
This professor is by far the worst professor that I have ever had. It is an ONLINE class just to be aware of. He had no lectures, powerpoints, nothing... You are expected to read the book, but in any case, the book is confusing and hard to navigate, it does not look like the homework whatsoever. If at all possible avoid this class.
His class had no lecture at all. The directions for the homework were extremely confusing and tests were difficult.
Test Heavy. Tests make your grade. Tests done using Respondus browser with Camera. All statistical calculations expected to be done by hand. No interaction with professor, and when contacted takes long time to respond. does not care about the student.
Legitimately the WORST class and PROFESSOR/TEACHER I have ever had in my 19 years on this Earth. Not a joke, the homework took me 10 hours on Friday. 10 HOURS. And I wasn't the only one. Everyone in the class's Discord was complaining too. Also, the quiz questions are nowhere near what is in the homework and the wording is incredibly confusing.
The worse professor you can take at this school. Take literally anyone else and you will pass. This man lies, puts quizzes and exams on days that aren't his. Yells at students, and demand the use of programs that he didn't even teach how to use.
He was pretty chill. The lectures were extremely boring. Don't hesitate to take this class if you want to challenge yourself. His quizzes are nothing like the homework that he gave. Homework required using technology and, he did not even give instructions. Try to search everything online if you don't want to do everything by hand.
Dr. Silver isn't a tough teacher. Grading is pretty generous. Put in good effort and read the books and chances are you'll get majority of points. His lectures are dry, so reading the book is almost mandatory. His questions are not difficult on the exam, just know the book. He gives a list of essay questions in advance and chooses from them.
don't take this prof, avoid at all costs. you pay $100 for online access to homework that doesn't relate to quizzes at all. professor doesn't have lectures or anything helpful. his "study guides" just tell you what the concepts in the chapter are but don't provide any practice questions. the mean of quizzes is usually 6/10
Probably the worst professor I have ever had the displeasure of having. His lectures are obnoxiously boring and difficult to follow. Everything he explains, he explains in the most convoluted, roundabout manner. The textbook does not do much to alleviate this issue either - it is just as unnecessarily wordy as his lectures. Stray far away!
Assigns hw and then gives you a quiz on something completely different the next class. I hope that sometimes one of us will hit our expiration date earlier than the other. The guidelines for a review on rate my professor says to include both pros and cons. However, I can't think of a single pro of taking this class with this professor.
Unorganized class. Is barely fixing issues from the begininng of semester, in the middle. Uses lockdown browser and uses nonusable recources, claiming that its available for use. monotone voice and very boring lectures. doesnt reply to emails often until its a class wide issue. also claimed that this class was in person, but half has been online.
His lectures are not good, he has a grainy voice, but he's a nice guy, he gives great instructions about what to do on canvas. The quizzes make little sense but its multiple choice and all word problems. He gives basically a study guide for each quiz. Idk why the rating is so low. I think you should take his class Lockdown browser quizzes in person
I'm genuinely shocked at how did dude got hired. Lectures are horrible and a huge waste of time. Quizzes are not connected with the homework that he gives you. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
The professor does not have any knowledge of how technology works, does not know how to properly instruct a class, and cannot connect with his students on an educational or even basic level. Do not recommend taking this class, wish I could transfer out.
Stay away. He mumbles/grainy voice, during office hours and he doesn't even know what's going on.He's kinda rude. I asked him for help on HW and he just sent me the formula.During office hours, it didn't seem like he knew how to solve the problem.. gave me the wrong answer 3x, TA had to step in to help. HOMEWORK IS TEDIOUS, 3-6 hours on homework
HW on PEARSON, Everyone has different HW qs, you're allowed a cheat sheet. Quizzes and tests on RESPONDOUS. 2-3 chances of EC. Make a DISCORD so everyone can help each other. READ THE TEXTBOOK lots of textbook knowledge. Final is 20% of grade. Grainy voice. If you have a good discord group, you'll be okay. Curves grade if majority don't pass
Asynchronous class. Homework was horribly tedious and the prerecorded lectures were frankly unwatchable. Weekly quizzes were weirdly concept-based, and the midterms/final reused quiz questions. Steven Silver is the worst professor I've ever taken.
I personally like this professor over highly rated professor Gary Castrol. Mainly because of his fair grading policy. Although his lectures seem boring, he gives best effort to teach you and wants you to learn something about marketing. I appreciate his constructive approach of teaching marketing subject to non-marketing major students.
DO NOT TAKE. He does not teach anything, he just reads off slides without explanation. He gives quizzes weekly without helping us prepare. We are quizzed before the homework for that chapter is even due. He also has a very raspy voice which can make it hard to understand and stand. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. HE SHOULD BE LONG RETIRED.
The worst teacher ever. He sat down the entire time and could hardly hear his low monotone voice. This guy should have retired back in the 1950s.
Steven Silver's is the worst teacher I have ever had. His class is characterized by dullness, condescension, ineffectiveness, and negativity. He does not teach, he just speaks to himself and the whiteboard. His tests are extremely difficult and he does not explain things in a comprehensible manner. Do not sign up. Drop if you are already enrolled.
this has been the worst class i have ever taken. his lectures are boring and his explanations are nonexistent, he just reads off his slides which are not helpful at all ... weekly quizzes and hw which is lwk more helpful then his lectures/class. to this day his class traumatized me and i think about it every day bc it enrages me so much
its literally joe biden, its bad.
Unclear Grading Criteria, Does not give good feedback. Weekly quizzes, THREE MIDTERMS + Final. THREE GROUP PROJECTS. Only take as a last resort.
Do not take this guy for Intro to Marketing, Prof. is old af, lectures don't match up with quizzes or midterms half the time. Joe Biden mf interrupts group presentations.
Honestly, even if this class fits your schedule unbelievably nicely I still would wait another semester to do marketing. He's pretty old and has a grainy voice, it's very hard to stay engaged in the lectures. There are hard quizzes every week, 3 midterms, a final, 3 group projects (2 are 10 page papers + slides and 15 min presentation).
Literally Joe Biden.
My class was asynchronous. Prof. Silver's lectures, study guides, etc., are pretty much useless. Expect to do most of the heavy lifting yourself—read the textbook, do the homework in Pearson, and take good notes. You'll get out what you put in. If you do watch the lectures, definitely put them at 1.25 speed.
I've never had a worse experience with professors/teachers in my life. I wish I could rate him 0. Prepare to teach yourself EVERYTHING because he just mumbles condescendingly the whole class and his explanations are long-winded and useless. 1 quiz/week lockdown/webcam even in person. 1 final project but you have to figure that out on your own too.
Mid class, don't need to go any days besides quizzes or tests because he doesn't notice. Annoying group project at the end. If you want an easy-ish pass and not know anything about stats this is the guy.
