The tests can be a little hard but if you study you will be fine. He usually gives very generous curves and offers a whole lot of extra credit.

Good & interesting class, actually involves students. Good sense of humor. Good reivew class for final. Actually go to the class, see the extra credit shows and you won't have problems easily passing.

This professor is really helpful and cares about the subject

Steve is the most approachable professor ever. He cares enough about his students to make sure everyone is on the same page and no one is lagging behind. He makes it a point to engage his class as individuals. He knows people's names and talks to them with compassion and a true desire to help them with any problems.

This is one of the easiest and funnest classes ever. You don't even have to study for exams and you'll get an A. Very friendly guy and his jokes are actually funnier than Bob Sagat :D I like the simple to the point slideshows, you learn alot about the class. I first thought theatre would be crappy when i joined it, he made this class one of my favs

I love Steve Smith! Take this class you'll have fun and be able to fill a category for generals. The slide shows are easy to understand.

Steve is honestly one of the best professors! He made the class soooo easy and tons of fun! It's pretty much impossible to not get the grade you want because he gives so many extra credit oppertunities....You will most likely not be dissapointed if you take this class....

I loved this class! I took it as a filler and thought it would suck..it ended up being my favorite class...absolutely love the professor he is hilarious and makes class fun and easy. He puts the notes up on D2L which is nice if you miss class, easy A because you get so many chances for extra credit.

Just took this class to fill a credit, but it turned out to be well worth it. Steve's a really nice guy and makes that class fun. Easy, EASY A even if you do skip a few times.

Easy to understand and makes class fun and exciting

he puts all of the lecture notes online, therefore, you do not even need to attend class. he does a review session the class period before the test and gives you the answers.

This was an amazing class. I reccomend it for anyone interested in learning about the in's and out's of theatre life. The requirements are reasonable and actually pretty fun. He's really approachable and is willing to help you out if you need it. Take this class, I highly reccomend it!

He Makes everything easy to learn even for non-theater majors. For theater majors- you haven't learned everything already, I guarentee you will learn new things!

Boring class, but pretty easy. Lots to memorize for the exams, but if you study the exams are easy and lots of EC is offered. Overall Steve Smith is a nice guy, and he tries to make boring information as interesting as possible.

Steve is a awesome teacher. Really cares about how his students are doing and would do anything to help them succeed. He keeps his class very interesting by using alot of visuals. I would strongly recommend it to anyone needing to fullfill a gen ed.

Steve is great teacher!! He cares about his students and makes class fun. Going in I thought it would be really boring and stale but he makes the class go by fast with all of his examples and stories. He has a lot of extra credit opportunities and you go to some plays for credit and some for extra credit...did not have to write anything about them

Steve is an extremly helpful teacher. He cares if you learn as he says "you pay his salary"! If you ever need help take advantage of his office hours and he will help you! Highly recomend if you need it for a Gen Ed.!

He goes through his powerpoint everyday and 95% of the test questions come from these slides, only a little comes from the book and I didn't buy it and I ended up with an A. He is passionate about what he does and if you take advantage of the extra credit, you will do just fine.

Intro to theatre was awesome with him! I bought the book but did not open it once.... Do not recommend buying it! You do have to study to get a good grade... but not much! Go to the reviews (class period before the test) and take advantage of the extra credit!

Made class interesting and fun with plenty of opportunity for extra credit. You can attend plays for extra credit which was nice. I would have gotten an A if I didnt have a job and could help run plays. Tests are all multiple choice and 5 pts a piece.

He is good about explaining the chapters. i didn't buy the book but having the notes on line and going to class helped me get an A in this class. He also gives a lot of extra credit opportunities.

Very good professor. Notes were very clear, and posted online. Never took attendance, but going to lecture made the exams much easier. Eager to help students. Exams graded quickly.

Had him for intro to theatre. the class was extremely easy. i opened up the textbook once the whole semester. there was close to 1000 points of extra credit that you could potentially get for working on shows and going to extra plays, the class had i think 1500 points for an A. I have him again next semester for THEA240.

Awesome professor, however if you have no interest in Theatre I wouldnt take it, it is boring and hard for people who couldnt care less about theatre.

This was such an easy class! If you type the notes (wich all power points are online), and just study those you will get an A on all the tests. Honestly I got the text book, and we NEVER used it. You really can get by without buying the text for this class and you will still get an A.

Easy Class! Not a boring class to sit through either. No need to buy the textbook. Easy A just follow along with the powerpoints that he posts online for you and study off of those a little before the exams and you will do fine. Go to extra plays for extra credit makes less need to study for the exams.

Really fun guy. Material is kinda boring if you have a background in theater but Steve makes it interesting,he has lots of stories. The book is totally unnecessary, I never even opened it and have 95% cause all the notes are online. If you need an easy, fun A I totally recommend him!

This is the easiest class I have taken at MSU. There is no need to buy the book. He gives out a lot of extra credit opportunities so even if you don't do well on an exam you will be fine because of extra credit. I highly recommend this class!

Steve Smith is kinda a big deal. One of the best teachers i have ever had.

very enthusiastic and upbeat. this guy really loves theatre and teaching. he posts the lectures online so you can print them off, and basically covers the book. no need to study at all, there is almost 500+ extra credit points available if you have the time.

Steve is the type of professor that genuinely cares if his students are learning, and is very approachable and understanding of any issues that arise. He expects you to do your work, and is willing to answer questions, however he's not going to sit there and pass you if you don't do your work. I've had 4 classes with him and we've never used a text

Steve is a great guy who tries really hard. He is very helpful and anyone who doesn't pass one of his classes is at fault because he is very clear and wants you to learn.

I wrote the rating for THEA470 last spring, and taking the next level of lighting with Steve for my 5th class with him I can say that: He's still a really outgoing professor that cares that his students are learning. He expects you to do your work and understands that some of the projects are stressful but its prep for the real world. Steve rocks.

One of the best profs out there. Caring, smart, dedicated, fun, and involved. It's lots of memorization but he makes it fun and memorable. Great guy and amazing lighting designer. HIGHLY recommend THEA100 at Mankato and any other classes you can take with Steve.

great class! attendance wasn't mandatory because he put the notes online, but I recommend it because it's easier to remember plus he gives hints about the tests. Lectures do get long and boring though. Great about getting test scores posted fast. 2 required shows, but TONS of extra credit. Well worth it, easy A.

Don't buy the textbook unless you are a theatre major and want to read it for fun! I have an A in the class and I didn't buy the book or show up to class half of the time. All of the questions on the exams are from his PowerPoint slides

By far the best theater professor out there! He is the most enthusiastic prof I have had here at MSU. He makes an effort to connect with the students in his lectures, pulling them in if they're not paying attention but still being nice about it at the same time. I would highly recommend this class, for theatre majors or just to fill a Gen Ed.

He is the best professor ever for general education classes. Be aware if you don't study for exams from his powerpoint, you won't get a higher grade. He gives lots of extra credits where if you got C on all 4 exams and you did ALL EXTRA CREDITS, you will get an A!!

Steve is awesome!! Learned a lot and saw some cool plays. Gives out so much extra credit it is impossible to fail. If you study even a little for the tests you can get an A. The lecture before the exam is review day and those questions are always on the test! Also after every chapter is a chapter review worth 10EC points so just go to class.

Fun and easy class! Lectures are not mandatory to go to and all of the notes are online! I mainly only showed up for exam reviews and exam days and still did fairly well. I also kept up on the online notes though so do not expect to pass the exam without studying or participating in exam reviews. He is a very nice and fun teacher.

Fair grading, A LOT of extra credit opportunities so it's really your fault if you don't pass, notes online (helpful), Entertaining lectures, would recommend going to class but you don't really need to because the notes are online.

His Intro to Theatre class was by far my favorite. His lectures were detailed & he always had an interesting story/video to make you remember the content. Every show you see at MSU counts for extra credit so I ended the class with an almost 100% The class is super interesting & easy if you like theatre even just a little bit. Please take this class

I absolutely loved this class! Steven is an excellent professor and hilarious. The powerpoints are given out on D2L, so attendance is not mandatory. He gives group reviews at the end of each chapter and the same questions are on the exam.

Dr. Smith is one of the most genuine professors I have had. He offers A LOT of extra credit and is very passionate about what he does. Do NOT buy the text book, he will cover all of the material in his lectures. It is clear he wants each student to succeed in his class. You do not need to know a lot of about theatre to do well in this course.

A pretty straight forward class. Show up and pay attention and you're almost guaranteed an A. There is a book "required" for this class but you really don't need it. I opened mine maybe twice, and you can find a cheaper version on the Kindle app. He gives lots of extra credit opportunitie to the point where it' possible to get over 100%. Great dude

Steve made me feel very welcomed in his class. All of the lectures were engaging and visual. He gives very little homework, but when he does, they are fun assignments like going to see performances by the school. He is funny and easy to listen to. Plus, review days go into depth and fully prepare you for exams!

I loved Prof Smith. He was so funny and you can tell he cares about his students and how they are doing. He posts 2 lectures a week and a reading in the textbook. There are 4 tests total, one being the final. 2 quizzes of online shows on youtube also which are very easy to pass. He does reviews before tests too at end of lectures.

I took the online version, and he was great. Even though it was online, he made the video lectures interesting and I looked forward to watching them. He posts a review before each test and those are very useful for when you are taking the exam. There are also MANY extra credit opportunities. I would highly recommend this course.

Probably the nicest professor I had this semester! His lectures are fun and easy to follow, and he provides lecture notes online so you don't even need a textbook. He always made an effort to try and include anyone who wanted to participate. With plenty of extra credit opportunities both in and out of class, it's super easy to get a good grade.

You really dont need the book if you're looking for a B. Everything he teaches in class is quite literaly on the test. Pretty funny guy with a weird sense of humor but charming enough to not make you stare at the ground walking to your next class. If there is a large chunk of people missing, he hands out extra credit to those who are present. Nice.
