Classes go by FAST (even for 2 hours). Lots of group work. Quizzes fairly simple - exams pretty difficult, but do-able. Collects homework randomly (but it helps to do them). Awards participation points. Always willing to help if needed. Good guy.
Such a nice guy w/ a halarious sense of humor. Doesnt bother U w/ stupid accounting stuff, only what matters. Cares about us as students & tries his best to make sure U do well. Tests are kinda hard but he tells U that straight up,& gives good study guides
really good teacher, very funny. collected homework randomly but it really helped to do it. tests are kinda tough but he prepares you well for it. in class work is really helpful too. the 2 hours flies by, and isn't really boring. he doesn't lecture much, he likes having you work in groups a lot
Awsome teacher, with hard tests, but really tries to prepare you for them. Class seems to fly by for a two hour class
Probably the best teacher I have had at Western. He makes the class fun and interesting. The tests are very difficult though. Some people thought they were trick questions, but he just worded them so they were not an exact copy of the book. Overall a great class.
most fun teacher in the CBE- and he's an accountant! Makes a really dry subject somehow not completely mind-numbing. Kind of erratic with homework collection, to keep you on you toes and tests and quizes are not cakewalk. one of my all-time favorite teachers at any level.
AWESOME Teacher!! The class format is like a math class, but this forces you to learn the material throughout the course instead of late night cram sessions. The class is like a comedy, he is hilarious!! I look forward to every class day.
Fantastic teacher!! Easily the best I've had at Western. Tests are hard and he collects random homework. Really good sense of humor.
Super duper.
Very funny professor. I hated financial accounting but he made managerial accounting understandable. Assigns blackboard quizzes, and collects random homework. Tests are multiple choice. Lots of group work.
Absolutely the most interesting lectures I've had at Western. Very funny, makes the two hour class go by quickly. Does a great job of making sure he moves at the right pace for the students. Do the homework and the exams are easy.
Prof. Smith is hilarious, and definitely the best teacher I have had yet at Western. I find the subject of accounting very boring, and yet some how he made it interesting! He adds fun and flair to a subject that could be terrible, making it an awesome class. I wish he taught more subjects!
Smith is such a great teacher. Tests are tricky, but he tells you EXACTLY what is going to be on them.
I loved the class. The instructor makes 2 hours go by very fast. He is hilarious but doesn't make you feel stupid, always willing to answer your questions. Exams are hard but he gives excellent exam reviews and in-class activities. I recommend him.
I enjoyed him, very fun and energetic, likes to teach. Provides lots of in-class activities and has open office hours. Also had a weekend study session before our Final! The exams are long and tedious, but he works with you well.
He's by far, the best prof. I have had here at WWU so far. He will go as far as he has to to make sure you understand the material. He even takes the entire weekend before finals to have an optional review session. It's a challenging class, but it's worth it.
He is by far the BEST prof ever! He is very clear in what you have to do, and makes sure you understand everything completely. I reccomend him to anyone.
Dr. Smith is great! He's a really nice guy and is really funny, I wish I had more classes that I had to take of his, but I don't. He explains things really well. You do have to do the homework eveytime, but the online quizes are easy. The tests are a little tough, but he gives you a good study guide. GREAT PROFESSOR!
Funny guy, but was just too hard. He says the class averages for the 3 tests we take will be around 80% for the first, 75% for the second, and 70% for the final. Also, he says that EVERY year someone cries on the final exam.
Mr. Smith is a awesome teacher. I highly recommend him. He's not too hard because you know exactly what is going to be on the test because he tells you and there are little things that help your grades.
Great teacher, hard tests. I think that's what a university class should be. He teaches real world knowledge and gives lesson about life. Funny guy.
This teacher has beem my favorite teacher at WWU so far. His teaching style was very unique and refreshing. He actually encouraged me in accounting and I am minoring in it because of him. I really enjoyed his class and wish he taught more business related classes here. Definitely recommend Steven Smith to anyone interested or not in accounting.

Best teacher I have had so far at Western... loved him! If you are going to take this class, take it with Smith. His tests are a little difficult but he's a really great teacher and a very funny guy!
Dr. Smith is the most awesome prof I've had at wwu yet. He's honest with students about the work load. It's not easy but he makes it really interesting. The study guides for the exams made studying easier. He also held 3 hour study sessions on the weekend before the final. Take this class from him!
The best professor that i have ever had. Tells you on the first day that the test are going to be super hard. But you are so well prepared with the in class activities, if you spend time studing the review, you will get an A no problem. AN AWESOME STUDY GUIDE. I got A- on the exam and an A on the final. I got a B- with Estep in Acct 240. Recommend
This guy is the best. I was hesitant to take him because people made him out to be super tough. But actually, he's not bad. I'm getting an "A" and i had a super tough time in Acct 240 in which i got a "B". Great jokes, and a great study guide. The book is awesome 8-12 pg chap unlike 240 when there were 25 pg chap. Group work helps out a lot on test
I was going to major in econ but after taking this class with him i decided to change my major. The people that struggle are the ones who don't study. Really easy to get a B because More than half of the points are from online quiz, homework and participation. Also you get 20 points for printing something out second day of class. Highly Recommend!
If you are going to major in Acct. Then take this guy. The information you learn WILL stay with you. He's not easy by any means but his teaching style, study guide, group work, and every else makes you really well prepared not only for the exams, but also for the future. He is hella funny and his voice cracks all the time. Take Bronstein for easy A
Horrible class. Unclear expectations. Doesn't know what and how to teach. Tells unappropriate jokes that seemed to schock all of us. Wants essays to be as long as woman's skirt. Long enough to cover the thing but short enough to stay interested. How do you like that? I didn't. Stay away if you want to learn accounting. O'K if you are into circus.
Awesome class! I got a perfect score on my first two mid-terms but haven't taken final yet. Also, you learn a ton. Great for accounting mahors or non-majors. He keeps the class lively and he is a funny guy.
Tough prof., and test are even tougher! You go into them feeling good, and thinking that you understand the material that you covered in class....and then when you see the test you don't know what to do. They are way more involved questions and concepts than you covered in class activities. Funny guy tho...kinda crude at times.
Good professor. The key to this class is always coming and staying up with the material. If you don't keep up you will get owned on tests and your final grade. Tests were in depth and pretty hard too so don't miss ANY days. Failed the final but somehow got a C so do all the other work as it's easy points.
he is an amazing teacher! He does a great job at keeping the class interested in the material. He also really does care if you understand it or not. If you do the homework, tests aren't too hard. Oh yeah he's really funny and I didn't think his jokes were offensive at all!
Very tough class. He is pretty funny as a person but he doesn't really prepare you for the test. His tests are so incredibly difficult.
He is a really good accounting teacher. he seemed to prepare us for tests very well. online quizes are a piece of cake if you just go through the chapter for each question, it would probably be easiest if you read the book but i didn't. i just went to class and he explains everything pretty well.
This class was ok. Smith has good intentions but he has off topic inappropriate convos. If you do the hw and study, you'll do fine. Part of your grade depends on what your group grades you, which sucks.
I really liked this professor. Class almost never went the full two hours, and if it did it went by really fast. His lectures are helpful, and the groups work out if you go to class. You don't do projects with your group member you just help each other out on the problems. Take him..study do the hw and online hw and you will be fine.
Smith is a great teacher. His lectures are really helpful for the exams. Do the homework, online quizzes and attend class to earn easy points. To study for his exams, just go over the homework and class worksheets and you'll be fine. His classroom convo. are inappropriate at times but he's a great prof.
Dr Smith is a great teacher. This is an awesome course to take. Class consisted of miminal time on slides but instead Dr. Smith spent time being interactive with us. He provides ample time to study for tests/finals. I worked hard and recieved a C but have taken alot from the class. Some will say other teachers are easier but he is the guy to have!
He is a great teacher. He hardly lectures. You spend most of your time doing activities which helps you understand the material without listening to a 2 hour lecture. Classes are scheduled for 2 hours but he only keeps you in one and half. I would totally recommend him
AWESOME professor. He makes accounting interesting somehow? And you actually learn something? Beware, his tests are really tough. I'm coming away with a C in his class, but I'm really glad I took accounting with him. Take Bronstein if you want it easy.. although I hear the accounting department is coming down on Bronstein, saying he's too easy.
Excellent teacher. I came into the class dreading accounting, but he actually makes the topic fun and interesting. He puts homework solutions online and rarely collects, but DO NOT rely on that. Do the homework. Go to class. Take the quizzes. His tests are hard but if you work hard, you'll be fine.
This guy is a fun teacher, but he is not easy. His tests are pretty challenging, however, they are doable. if you study and do the recommended hw you can expect to do reasonably well. the only people i know who got bad grades are the kids who never went to class or did hw. if acct is your major you should take him, because he will make you learn
Smith is the best prof I have had at Western. He is funny and teaches the material extremely well. Be prepared to study a lot, his tests are VERY difficult, but he teaches you everything you need to know and if you pay attention you should be fine. I wish he could teach every class I take.
He is like "Accounting Made Easy." He does tons of problems in class, which is the best way to learn accounting. He explains topics. He has funny and semi-pointless stories that give the long class period a nice break. Class was interesting. Tests are a little hard but mostly because of a lot of material, so study! Take his class!
Steve is probably the best prof. I have had at Western. He explains everything very clearly and works through problems in class to help you learn. His class is not that hard. You will actually have to learn something though. I wish he taught more classes! Great guy to talk to outside of class also!
He is a really good teacher. The class is very easy. Attendence is madatory (sorta). You get participation points from your classmates based on attendance. The group work is really useful.
The best professor I have had at WWU yet, no questions asked. The day to day group activities are fun, you meet a ton of people, and you learn a lot more that way, so you study less at home. The tests are hard and take a long time, but he prepares you. Class is mandatory cause you get part. points and learn so much. TAKE HIS CLASSES!
Smith was the best prof. I've had so far at WWU. He has a great sense of humor and is really interested in helping his students. His tests are really hard, but he helps you prepare for them. Just show up to class, do the homework and if you do decent on the tests, you can pull off a B (at least I did).
Great teacher. Does not hide material from you, tells you how it is going to be.
Steve Smith is awesome! Explains things well, does hands on assignments, and posts homework answers online before the homework is due. Don't miss more than 4 days, or you lose all participation points. Not the easiest class, but Smith makes it pretty fun. The tests are hard so study A LOT. Also, I believe he's using a different text now.
Best professor I have taken at WWU so far! He is extremely funny, smart and genuinely cares about his students. I loved coming to class every day! This is not a class you can slack off in though. Otherwise it's pretty easy.
Steve is pretty hilarious. I would recomend taking his classes. Although the work can be a bit tedious, the classes are entertaining. Smith really works with you! Although he wouldn't admit it, he really wants you to succeed, and he will help you, as long as you are willing to do a little work and help youself.
This class is tough. He is a fantastic teacher and a funny guy but you cannot slack off in this class. He will tell you exactly how the tests are and his review sheets are extremely helpful. Plan on attending class most if not all class periods because it's an activity driven class not so much lecture.
Knows what he's talking about. He Explains clearly and enjoys the subject.
Tests are hard! But he is a very good teacher. What he teaches is exactly what he will test you on. Count on the hardest things you learn being on the tests. The project is overall a little tedious but Smith is a very funny nice teacher!
he is actually the worst prof ive ever had at wwu. personally he is probably a nice guy, but he shouldnt be teaching. he teaches totally different from the text so dont bother getting it or it will confuse you even more. cant really study for tests because he puts material on them that he says he wont. he acts like hes superior to students.
He might be a funny guy, but his teaching is not good. He really only ever caters his lessons to the students in class that already have foundational knowledge. He does not follow the textbook (in fact, he repeatedly contradicts it). Group project is poorly explained and harshly graded. Best advice is do the practice problem every day.
Very hard class, but really funny teacher. Tests are hard, but are similar to homework assignments and in class work. As long as you read the chapter, do the assignments, and go to class. You're good. Not an easy A.
Straight forward guy; preps you for the tests well. Tries to scare people off the first class, but the guy is really quite agreeable.
He's ridiculously charming and funny. Must take!
Smith is a very tough teacher, but a very good one! He expects alot of you and you need to be ready to work hard, attend every class and pay attention. Do all of the homework and you'll get a good grade.
Very straight forward, read the chapter and do homework prior to class and its not that hard. He does activities in class centered on the topic being taught. Easy to approach with questions. Overall I found him to be an excellent teacher, no hidden BS or having to jump thru hoops. Rob Carter Spring 2010
Not an easy A is an understatment, this class is ridiculously difficult from the tests to the papers. His tests are creating financial statements from memory, no mulitple choice and no direction information. He does not lecture and has said he is not there to teach but to help you teach your self.
Not an easy A by any means, you really have to work for it. Things I found helpful were to always do the homework before class and study the hell out of the in class assignments before the exams and you will do fine. Overall this guy is a great teacher and really knows his stuff!
Like the person said below me, the tests are creating financial statements by complete memory, very tedious. The paper is an easy A if you really do your research and put time into it. There's 30 participation points that can really boost your grade which helps in the end Overall a very difficult class though!
Smith is great! I have learned so much from him. He's not the easiest but go to office hours, attend class, and do homework and you should be fine. You NEED to study! The tests are tedious, creating financial statements mostly, but he gives partial credit and your participation grade can save you.
Smith is the man. Whatever you put into it, you get out of it. The first test comes within 2 weeks, and its all ACCT 240 review. You have to know financials by memory, which is rough but you should know them if you plan on going into accounting anyways.
Smith is awesome. He teaches the material very well and is entertaining in class. The tests are composed of material directly related to the in-class exercises. If you hope to pass the tests, ATTEND CLASS. Study the in-class exercises really well and you'll be ready for the tests. His class is hard, but you learn a lot. The 2 hours fly by.
HW is randomly graded. Smith makes the class fun and interesting, however he is a very particular grader and the tests are very hard. He will curve depending on scores. Class itself is hard, but probably doesnt get better than this. Do the HW, get a tutor and know the in class problems by heart. Each one will be on the test. Group project isnt bad.
The class is fair, he gives a lot of partial credit, do well on the first test because the second and third are really hard and really long. study the inclass problems more then homework because they can make you confused and tests are basically harder versions of exact in class activities. recommend parrticipating, its a huge chunk of your grade.
This isn't easy for an entry-leveled core class. If you go to class every day & pay attention, you'll probably pass. Teacher takes pride in number of students that drop the class due to difficulty, & refused to help me the times I approached him out of class for help. He knows his subject, but is an ass in the sense of introducing a new concept.
Smith is my favorite professor at WWU so far! I was really intimidated to take this class in the beginning, but Smith made me love it and was crystal clear about his expectations and what he puts on his exams. Take this class with him, you will not regret it!
I'm not going to lie that this professor is HARD! However, I love him. He is very helpful. Don't ask him questions about what would be on the exam - ask specific area what you need help with and he will help. Study the in-class activities REALLY WELL because similaries will be on the exams - trust me.
Smith lectures to people who already have a basic understanding of the concepts which is not the best approach for an entry level class, but do those in class activities until you have them down 100%. If you have a study group it helps immensely, this class is very passible but you have to put a lot of work into it
Review book material before class, his new multiple choice tests can seem overwhelming at first but are actually quite easy, has a participation grade and the tests are almost exact replicas of the in-class activities. Overall not too challenging of a course.
Smith is hilarious! He keeps your attention throughout class, and goes through activities exactly as they will be on exams. The class was dull at times, but that depends on how interested you are in accounting. He gives practice problems from the book, but I rarely did them and got an A-. The book problems just reinforce what was done in class.
He's a really good teacher, probably one of the best that I've had at WWU. Tests are pretty difficult but as long as you study, you will be fine. His classwork assignments are really helpful in studying for the exams.
He's a great professor. While his tests are tough, he is very fair and reasonable. Study for them using the mini-cases you provide and you'll do fine. I would take a class with him any day.
Probably one of the best profs I've ever had! He's great with students, very funny, just a nice guy over all. He knows and loves the material and provides all the resources needed for us to do the same. If you put in the time doing homework and activities, you'll do great! Don't get behind though, cuz it will take a while to catch up.
Lectures are very helpful, I would go to class feeling dumb and leave feeling smart. Tests are challenging but fair; test material is never a surprise, he lays it out the class before the exam. I did not read the book at all, with the exception of the conceptual papers (2 and a half of them, they are one page each).
Smith is a wonderful professor. He keeps you interested in his class with his quirky stories. Make sure you do the mini cases and actually know the format to everything he tells you on whats gunna be on the exams.
This class was a lot of work but it was very worth it. He is very knowledgeable. I learned a lot and he made it very easy to understand. I wish I could take all of my accounting classes with him.
It is amazing that this class is so hard and the majority of my time is consumed by mini-cases, but I still love Dr. Smith! He tells you the class will be hard, no doubt. And it is. But there is really no other way to learn this material efficiently. He really tries to make class enjoyable and is fun. Just do your homework!!!
Dr. Smith knows the subject very well and is eager to help people learn it. The class time uses single-problem homework assignments in place of lecture time. Read the book, do the homework, and watch the videos he provides before coming to class. The tests are extremely hard!
Dr. Smith is an awesome teacher. Class time is spent going over the mini-cases, which is what the tests are based off of. Make sure you know how to do the mini-cases, very important! He tells you what will be on the test. Tests are hard, but if you practice the mini-cases you'll do fine. Go to class and participate!
All you have to do for an A in this class is show up and complete all the classes. I absolutely loved him. This class is supposed to weed people out of the accounting major, but it really is not hard at all. Just do your work and you'll be fine. Plus, he has a great, weird sense of humor.
Understanding the mini cases is essential to being able to pass tests.
Master the mini-cases to get a strong foundation for the tests. The tests are long and challenging. This class sets the tone and the groundwork for ACCT 342 and 343, so take it seriously and do the work. Class time is infinitely more valuable than the online portion. Go to office hours and ask questions.
Best plan is to develop a study group early on and study together regularly. He usually tells you exactly what is going to be on the exam but as he stress in the beginning of the quarter he is looking for fluency as well as understanding, and so most students are pressed for time on his exams. He is very personable and has good analogies.
To do well in this class, you MUST watch his video lectures, master all the mini cases, and come to class every day. Tests are challenging and all based on mini cases. The online homework portion (Connect) is a trap. You have to complete them for credits, but do NOT waste time study them for exams. All you need are the mini cases. Remember that!
Amazing professor, extremely tough class, and a sprinkling of dry humor thrown in. this was by far one of my favorite classes ever. he tell you exactly what is on the test, but they aren't easy. hold on it's and intense ride .
Pro: Smith will challenge you, which is important if you are going to take the CPA. Con: Smith is arrogant and doesn't act like people matter. Summary: It's a very difficult class, intensive tests, mandatory participation and attendance. High drop rate. At mastery level, you still can barely finish the tests in the time allotted.
He always makes sure that students are learning. The mini cases really help with learning. Wish I could take him for more classes.
Steve is a really smart guy and knows the topic very well. This class is all based on his cases. You should do well as long as you follow the cases and watch his videos. The class is tough but if you do the work you will do well
Steve Smith is easily the best professor Ive had at western. He genuinely cares about his students and wants them to learn. The class will be difficult but if youre willing to put in the work youll do fine
Dr. Smith is a really great teacher who will teach accounting in a way that will make you love it. Don't be afraid to ask for help, its very important not to fall behind on the case studies. He will tell you EXACTLY what the test will be on, so play close attention and study hard and you will be fine.
This class is a lot of work but that's what accounting is. Dr. Smith prepares the class every well for his exams. It is homework heavy but not difficult if you have good time management skills. I appreciated his humor and the way class was structured.
I really liked this class. The cases were a great way to learn accounting and tests would sometimes have puzzles to figure out but you'd be given the tools to solve them prior.
Probably one of the only genuinely great professors in the Accounting department. While I've heard awful things about his ACCT375 section, 341 was perfect for active/example-guided learning, as his class focused on solving case studies rather than sitting through dry Powerpoints. His tests are brutal, but fair if you actually do the work. Love him.
Smith is one of the best accounting professors I've had. He really cares about helping you succeed in his class and in your future career. His class I took, ACCT375 did involve a lot of homework but he spent a great deal of time going over the key points in class and making sure we understood what was expected of us. Truly felt like I learned a lot
Reversed structure where you do assignments at home. I appreciate the idea of making students work through assignments first, but I felt like I didn't have enough direction to make a solid effort. Exams were very hard and I did not finish my midterm in time. Attend class since there are no lectures. Great guy though, I can tell he cares
I was excited because it was gonna be my first tax class. Worst class I've ever taken, for sure. Traumatic experience. He didn't give clear directions in his classes and would blabber about unnecessary things. I get that personally he's funny and likeable, but worst professor I've taken ever.
He really doesn't provide enough instruction to do well so you're left guessing on how to complete assignments. Class time is taken up by discussion groups so really you aren't learning anything from him rather just discussing what you did for homework.
Smith is hands down one of the best accounting professors that I have ever had. His lectures are always super interesting and engaging for students. He really cares about his students success and always gives helpful feedback. I never thought that I would be excited to go to tax class, but here I am always looking forward to it!
This is my first week in his class and I have already received more work in this class, than any class I've ever taken at WWU, DO NOT take this guy's class if you want any free time outside of school. He seems like a nice guy, but takes an intro accounting class way too serious and assigns way too much work.
He does assign a lot of homework so be prepared for that. I liked the structure of the class, as you would do homework outside of class and you would come in to discuss what you did/how to do it. It helped me learn the topic a lot. Tests are pretty hard but if you attend class, participate, do the homework and participate, you will do fine!!
I hated ACCT240 and was not looking forward to this class but Professor Smith is great and he made the class enjoyable and go by quickly. Assignments and tests are moderate, and not too hard but if you slack you will do badly. The only thing I don't like is there's always a problem with a question on the test, but it always gets fixed though.
Dr. Smith went from my most hated to absolute favorite professor at Western. EVERYTHING he does is for a reason! You can always ask him why he does certain things. He puts a lot of effort into every aspect of his class, and I gained a lot of respect for him throughout the quarter. I'm sad to move on from this class - it was a lot of fun.
This class is hard and the exams are harder. So much homework. However, I learned a lot of lessons (both about accounting and professional) from this class.
Dr. Smith is one of the most, if not the most, amazing people I've ever met. He has a reason for everything and is more than willing to explain why he does things the way he does them. Many people struggled in this class (average exam scores around 65%) but he curves your final grade. You're graded not only on attendance but also on participation.
Mr. Smith is a great professor, it was an honor getting to be in his last class.
Professor Smith's class is very challenging, but in a good way. It really prepares you for the college experience and professional life. He was easy to reach out to and provided feedback that helped me to improve my performance in class and actually grasp what he was teaching. I respect him as a professor and the difficulty of classes to propel us.
Professor Smith's class is a real challenge, but it's worth it. The workload is heavy, but the lessons learned are invaluable. unstuck study and the free textbook were super helpful for staying on top of it all.
