While this professor encourages questions and class discussions, he is very unclear and tends to teach more philosophy and debate rather than English composition. His instructions for assignments are vague and subject to change. Gives in-class essays and grades unpredictably. I would NOT recommend this professor.
Ridiculous grading policy. If you want an a in a class this is not the class for you. I have a record of getting all a's in english and I worked my butt of on the first exam for a D. I ended up dropping the course.
Great guy, not the easiest course to take, but he was an awesome teacher who really knows what he is talking about.
I have always been great at writing, took AP classes throughout highschool with all A's. However this class is not graded based upon writing. definately do NOT reccomend this professor

If you're looking for a professor with unfair policies, heavily biased grading and a poor quality of instruction, Dr. Swanson is the professor you're looking for. You'll want to take him even more if you happen to like professors that won't reward you for all your hard work. If this isn't the kind of professor that you want, look elsewhere.
He's very difficult, but if you work hard and do the work when it is assigned, then it is not too hard. He is also very willing to help if you have questions. Just don't wait until the last minute. He has strict policies that are all in the syllabus, and he follows them. BE WARNED.
Read syllabus, do work, no problem. He obv. has passion for material and is probably annoyed by peeps like 11/4/10: "have always been great at writing, took AP classes throughout highschool with all A's... definately do NOT reccomend this professor" who prob went to a "highschool" where they "definately" didn't "reccomend" spelling. LOL!
look, he is a hard teacher. However, he knows what he is talking about and will do whatever it takes to help you understand the subject matter. He wants you to put in the work. The way he teaches the class makes you a better student even if you don't pass the class. He is a real teacher and will not let you just float through the class

i picked his class because it worked nicely with my schedule, when i first started the class, i was really stoked about it, being an english lover. i worked super hard for the 3 weeks that i was in the class, only to get less than stellar grades and useless criticism on my papers, and eventually after seeing how biased the grading was,i dropped.
This was the worst class I have ever taken. Had this at 8a.m. twice a week, never missed a SINGLE class, went to talk to him in his office on 4 different occassions, and he still did everything he could to not reward my hard work. Don't be an athlete and take this class. Trust me - you will fail! Be ready to DROP this class if you get him!
He definitely expects more than attendance and effort. I had to really make sure that I stayed on top of the work, showed progress, and followed the course policies. It was HARD, but my writing DEFINITELY improved. If you are expecting to just show up and get a C, then you should go somewhere else.
This was the worst class I've ever enrolled in. Our teacher wasn't interesting and I surely do not recommend Dr. Swanson to any student who needs an English class. You'll be better off with any of the other teachers.
this class was so difficult being a dual credit student. I advise high school students not to take his class.

I'd made all A's at MCC, until I took English with Dr. Swanson my second semester. You could work your hardest in his class and not make an A if you don't write exactly like he wants you to. With Swanson, it's not about quality, it's about thinking within his box.
I've never been the biggest fan of English, but Swanson's Fish Comp. 1 really left me with a bad impression of the subject. He sets really high standards for his students, but doesn't teach to a standard high enough to adequately help us out. Half the class had "F's", it was absurd.
Hahaha...students, like 7/27/11 who are taking "Fish Comp", will definitely have a hard time with Prof. Swanson. He IS HARD, and I never had to work so hard in a college class. However, in the past two semesters since his class, I've seen almost everything that he said begin to work in my other classes. It pays off!
He was a great professor and did a fantastic job making the class enjoyable. Yes, work was involved, but it was not hard.
Swanson is a good teacher but there is only one way he wants you to write, and that is his way. If you try any other way you will make a C or fail his class. In all my 13 years of school he was the first class I failed (D). Our class started out with 28 students,by the last 2 weeks of school we had 8 students left,he passed 4-5 of those students
Dr. Swanson is easily the worst professor that I've ever had. I'd like to say that he was competent in at least one area of teaching, but if I'm being honest, I simply can't do that. He cares far more about how his students' writings conform to his biases than he does about the quality of them. His attendance policies are easily the worst at M.C.C.
The class is hard in that you need to put in the time and effort in order to receive a good grade. He's willing to make fun of himself in order to help students realize that what he is saying about the material is relative to the student's future. I would recommend Dr Swanson to anyone who would like to do well in future classes and work.
Dr. Swanson is an incredible Professor. He will make you think. He is tough but fun and does have a sense of humor.I enjoyed his class.
Professor Swanson is not the evil professor that everyone makes him out to be, he is in fact one of the best you will encounter here at MCC.
Upon entering his class I heard that he was a hard professor and I would not like him. I have to say that everything that I heard about him was incorrect. Everyone has a problem with him because he challenges you. I had personal problems and missed a few classes. He was kind enough to meet with me and help me with my class work. He is dry but good!
Had him for American Lit II, as well as Freshman Comp I and II. Not an easy class at all-he has strict standards and the course pacing was a bit like drinking from a fire hose-but he has an incredible personality and is always there when you need help. If you have a strong work ethic and a genuine desire to learn, I highly reccommend him.

Mr. Swanson is definitely not an easy teacher, although, he is always there to offer assistance through emails etc. He requires at least 7 hours of outside class work. If you do decide to take his class make sure you're prepared to commit to it. He's a good person he just expects a lot.
Definitely not an easy professor, but he doesn't deserve the bad rap that he gets. He just has this crazy idea that students should show up to class and turn in assignments based on his instruction. Sure, he's frustrating at times and the class will make you work, but he's an engaging, funny person to listen to who WILL make you a better writer.
Dr. Swanson is a good professor. If you know how to write to his standards. If you are going into this class thinking you know how to write essays, you are wrong. Everything that I was taught up to this point about essays was wrong in his eyes. He challenges you, which is good. He is always there to help. Just very confusing and hard to please.
I would suggest not to take him. He's very rude, does not care about his students, and is not clear on what he wants-has students guessing on what to write about
Not an easy professor, but he has high expectations and makes you work very hard. You get graded on attendance and participation. You read A LOT and will have 4 books so READ them all. He can be sarcastic and funny. He Will help you be a better writer despite his hectic workload. Be prepared to WORK in his class. You will use google drive a lot.
Dr. Swanson is by far one of the worst teachers I have ever had. He is rude, and will not give you a chance. By the end of the first week in his class he will tell you that you will fail his class at least ten times. He will also laugh in your face if you tell him you expect to make a B. He is unprofessional, not helpful, he should not be teaching.
Possibly the worst/hardest class I have ever taken. It is true he does say that if you plan to make an A that chances are you won't multiple time, and I have found that to be a true statement. He is extremely vague on what he want you to write about, and expects the world. So bottom line if your not a brainiac don't sign up for his class.
Prof Swanson is awesome! I took him for Engl 1301 on the advice of another Prof. I chose to utilize his teaching style for a second semester for 1302. No... He will not GIVE you an A. He will help you earn an A if you put forth the effort and take advantage of available assistance and opportunities in class.
The prof. is really terrible due to high amount of homework and super super strict. I really don't wanna listen in class cuz he keeps asking stupid questions a lot.His aim is want us to succeed, but he only let us fair.I work crazy hard but cannot get an A. His grading scale is quite unfair compares to other prof. Avoid him if you can!

Do NOT take!!! There can not POSSIBLY be a more strict professor, in a very unprofessional manner at that. All I've heard all year is 'be more specific' and 'why'. Grade is based mainly off of attendance because it follows his 'research' assumptions. Grading equivalent....1day 1test. What a joke!
DO NOT TAKE!!!! Never failed English in my life until I took his class and got an F. I was shocked. Super strict on absences & counts being late as half of an absence. Did all of the work but still didn't pass and even emailed to try and discuss how to make my papers better. His responses, his methods, & grading is totally off & didn't make sense.
You have to use specific textbook and novels for his essays. They are all based off reality television which was hard for me to relate too. I had a BAYLOR English professor with a doctorate edit my paper and he said it was easily an A paper but Swason gave me an F!!! Extremely hard grader you have to write his exact style of writing or else!
His expectation are unclear and he hardly gives specific feedback about what you need to work on. He is also really sarcastic. He is super picky about the way you write, everything I've learned before seemed to be wrong. Also he doesnt use blackboard, he uses google plus so the grades are hard to keep up with. best thing about this was it ending.

His class is challenging only because there is a lot of reading in the beginning and usually an assignment is due every class period. But the only way you won't pass is if you literally just don't do the work. I enjoyed his class because I actually learned something useful.
I believe students who give professor Swanson a bad rating are the kind who are slackers. Yes, you will have to do a lot of reading, so if you are illiterate or do not plan on going to a 4-year university, do not take Swanson. He does not assign long essays like other 1302 classes I have heard about do. He is always available for students as well
Professor Swanson is a FANTASTIC teacher. He teaches you how to think. If you are looking for an easy class or you are not one to take initiative, I would suggest avoiding his class because he makes you work for your grade. I was very hesitant about taking his sci-fihorror class but I learned so much that I never expected to from that class.
Professor Swanson's class was the most difficult class of my community college career, hands down, but it was also the most important. Professor Swanson teaches a subject that is vital for each and every individual in the professional world, and he knows that. His goal is to see you succeed in the long-term; what more could you ask of a teacher?
Professor Swanson is one of the best English professors at MCC. It is not an easy grade though. I am an A student and I had to work for the B I earned. Not taking his class would be a mistake for your future though. My essay development has grown exponentially and although Swanson is by no means an easy grader, he cares about his students
Hands down the WORST TEACHER I have ever had. He started the class by giving us a "reality Check" of our lives. Acts like we only take his class, VERY strict, unrealistic expectations and is not clear in his assignments always asking "Why?" for everything. I stopped asking him questions after so many sarcastic responses. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
You will need both of the books and pop quizzes are given. I would suggest having conferences with Mr. Swanson to improve your paper and receive a decent grade. He is very picky when it comes to papers so beware. Watch for deadlines.
Professor Swanson's class is hard, but, it is a good class. He does expect high from his students, and if you aren't prepared, you won't make an A. I had never been told I'd have to think critically for a class and had never learned it, but, he taught my entire class how to do it.
Make sure you show up every day on time, you always have work in his class, he'll give pop quizzes.

For a whole minute I thought I was taking Psychology because he requires a book "Make it stick" which all it talks about is the study of the brain and mind on learning. I was not expecting this class to be as difficult as it was. He grades very tough and gives very broad comments to your papers. He is always saying "expect your grade to be lower than what your thinking". If you are trying to keep a above average GPA. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Do not take his class. He makes you feel stupid overtime you ask him a question, and be sure to double check your grade because he will give you a lower grade than you earned. he will also tell you that you will fail his class if you have any intention on passing, i regret taking this class!
Do not go to this class and expect an easy grade. He is a Tough professor but he does care about his students. He I always available for help and feedback. He can be really sarcastic sometimes so that was sometimes discouraging. I did learn a lot in his class that I feel like will help in the future.
You know how people used to teach you how to swim by throwing you into the deep end of the pool? That's this class in a nutshell. If you don't have a strong work ethic or little free time DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. This is the hardest classes I've had. You will get a lower grade than you think, but you will become a better writer.
This is a really though class but your hard work will be rewarded. This class teaches important life skills and forces you to think. He has a lot of assignments for his class but they are all for a reason. He's a tough grader and he makes you work for your grade but he really cares about his student. Just talk to him if you need help he'll help you
By far the hardest class I've ever taken, but also one of the most useful. Swanson teaches you how to be specific and concise in all of your papers and arguments. If you want a blow off class with easy work then avoid this class like the plague. If you care about language arts and want to excel in it he can help you get there
Mr. Swanson is a very difficult professor. He will tell you on the first day that everything you have been taught in high school is wrong. When you ask him questions about his assignment, or what you are going over in class , he will not answer you. Instead, he will make you feel foolish for asking. Insulted a couple of times throughout semester.
He is the worst professor . He gives you an reasonable amount of work. You had to read sections out of the book,write papers,submit peer reviews and Smarthinking review( He would take off a 10% of the paper for each) and to make it even better everything was due by 5 P.M. He is also very rude to his students. He thinks of himself as a writing god!
This class is unnecessarily hard and he makes you feel dumb. You have to write 3 drafts for each essay. You can make an A on the first 2 drafts, but when it comes to the final draft, you will most likely fail. He even says not to be disappointed when that happens. He says the class is easy as long as you follow directions but I disagree. Good luck!

Mr. Swanson is NOT worth the title "Professor"! His instructions for every assignment/paper was poorly written. Since taking his class, I have had college graduates and fellow doctorates read his syllabus only to have them shake their heads in disbelief! I only wish I had them read it BEFORE I paid for his course. AVOID his class like the plague!

When you type your essays. He wants you to be more specific but its never good enough. I barely passed because he is very strict. I would definitely recommend a different professor.

I had him for an online course during the summer. His favorite word is SPECIFIC but it never seems to be specific enough for him. He definitely grades based on what he wants to hear, not the quality of work you did. He is available for feedback and likes you to ask questions. He seems nice but I was definitely insulted a few times asking questions.
This guy sucks. I had an online 16 week course and wanted to quit since the second week but needed the credits. If he could read any of the reviews about him hed say they werent SPECIFIC enough. Hes feedback is awful, he just capitalizes the words you, topic, specific, and what. Hes also very insulting. Dont ever take any of his classes.
This guy is a terrible professor. There was 16 of us students at the start. Only 4 of us passed. He grades heavy and his teaching is so bad. Pick another professor save yourself.
If you do the assignments and youre slightly off on the minimum requirement you deserve a 0, not even partial grade. He grades really hard. Very sarcastic, emailing questions get attitude back. Really hard to pass.

A lot of tests, they are 95% write in answer tests as well, however they're never more than 15 questions per test, but there are always at least 2-3 tests per week. A lot of revision, like, a lot of revision. It can feel like half of the grade is just revision, and a lot of it in actuality, is. The professor seems willing to help though, to me.
Its a non major course but he grades as if your major is English and Writing. Youll most likely spend most of your time on this class than your major courses. At least 2 to 3 quizzes per week on top of one essay due with at least 100 pages to read per week. His grading is ridiculous. I do not recommend.
Professor Swanson had no trouble going off on tangents mid-class about a viewpoint he held, and if it wasn't a tangent, his strict opinion would be woven into the lecture. He had lots of rules he wanted to students to stick to in their writing but rarely put effort into his own work (for tests, quizzes, etc). Very rude and never satisfied.
Had him a few years ago. The class was tough and he even meant some of these reviews. He swept them off but many were right. It was always be more specific but if you were really stuck you were never told how. A lot of tests, homework, papers, and tangent lectures. Lots of homework, lots of quizzes, lots of essays, with mandatory revisions. Want to rent 3 books for an english comp course? Want to have multiple weekly quizzes on those books along with essays and essay revisions due in the same week? If you do, Swanson is the professor for you.

I'm sitting here bored and I read an article on BuzzFeed about people that have had horrible professors and I remembered Mr. Swanson. It's been 10 years, 3 colleges, 2 degrees, moving states, and a librarian job, and this guy has NOT left my mind! The quizzes and the condescending tone! UGGGH! Still haunts me! 10 years later! Drop the class! Run!
Swanson grades super strict when it comes to final essay drafts / finals in generals and does not give the feedback necessary to do well on these drafts. Lots of misc. assignments on top of essays that you will most likely need to revise to boost your grade. Extra credit is present which can help though. Be ready for his favorite word: specific.
This guy was awful. He wants you to revise, and be specific. Narrow your focus. Each essay/written assignment has multiple stages that you need to submit, and each stage is graded on its own. I really believe that if you had 20 stages, and narrowed your 2000 word essay down to a point as fine as clay, Swanson would still tell you to: "be specific".
Extremely picky with how he wants you to write papers. While I think it's nice to receive feedback on every paper, which he does, the feedback is often not helpful. If you ask for an example of how your essay topic could be narrowed as he constantly advises, he cannot take his own advice and pinpoint exactly what he wants from your essay. AVOID
I wish I had read these reviews before I took the class. Worst mistake of the year. Multiple assigned books for reading, multiple quizzes on those books and the lecture per week, and a load of essays. There are also timed midterm/finals essays, where if you finish 2 minutes early, you will be told "you should have used the extra time to revise".
Worst Professor at MCC. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone. Essay after essay with revision after revision and then peer review on top of that. Timed midterm and final. Don't copy and paste your essay from a different saved document. He looks at how long you took and will give you a failing grade if he sees you only spent a few minutes on it.
Hard class but he encourages asking questions. There is a lot of writing and revising. You'll have to buy a few books. Lectures, essays, reflections, quizzes. He is specific about what he wants, but it's mostly to see that you understand the lesson through the work you submit. This class requires effort and time. May be stressful but it's doable.
I'll echo what many of the other reviews say. He says to be specific, but you'll never be specific enough for him. He says to say how you feel about things, but you're always wrong about your feelings. Due dates are not found easily and there will be assignments due on weird days so that you don't get the hang of it. You can't revise enough for him

The class was interesting Is there a lot of work yes. I thought the class was more of a level 2 or 3 communication class rather than an intro class. But once you can figure him out and class it went smoothly. Definitely not for everyone so make sure you know what your in for before taking
He is an extremely hard grader. I could not make an 85 or higher on any assignment I turned in. I have never taken any type of English class that was this difficult. He tries too hard to sound like an intellectual and does not give a clear demonstration of what he wants.
You will spend more time in this class than any others. Forget having a job, kids or any other classes. There is so much unnecessary writing, revising, peer reviews. In addition to weekly essays being due, you'll have 3 textbooks to read and write in quizzes, and in depth reflection. Don't take for just needing the credit.
Took him for Honors Humanities I, I cannot stress how awful the professor is. Imagine you do your best and you get a 50% grade for absolutely no reason. Beyond that, he points to "minimum requirements" for reflection assignments as though they are posted somewhere and claims a nebulous "you had opportunities to ask". Horrible, don't EVER take him.
CAN NEVER BE TOO SPECIFIC, uses confusing wording but somehow you'll never understand the assignment or its purpose. Says he'll work with you after he treats you like a kid in the principals office for having emergencies. Assignments are spread out but there's plenty to do so falling behind is easy, procrastinators beware: you'll probably fail.
He wants you to be SPECIFIC.I met with him to talk about my essay revision and what to fix & it was unhelpful. I still got a bad grade.He is very particular about MLA format & your writing process.Also wish I was able to see my overall grade though the course instead of the end when I found out I failed,& it was too late to fix.
Make sure you check the due dates of assignments and be prepared to write and write and write and be SPECIFIC. You will have timed quizzes, reflections and essays every week (rough draft, peer grading, final copy and repeat) on top of reading your books.
Literally wrote/revised an essay every week. He takes off points if you don't take long enough to write an essay. And along with what everyone else is saying, it's true, you will NEVER be specific enough. He seems like someone who wants to help you and then gives every student the same advice. If you just want a credit, this is not your guy.
His feedback on assignments is not helpful in the slightest and you can never be specific enough for him. He checks on every paper to see how long you spend writing and revising, if you have not spent the amount of time HE thinks you should spend on a paper he will take points off. Gives very little time for quizzes that require written answers.
Expect a lot of writing assignments with strict feedback from Prof. Swanson. While helpful, his critiques can be vague at times. Utilize unstuckstudy and other resources to stay on top of the workload.
If you don't align your thinking or writing style with his, be prepared for a poor grade. Even if you provide detailed answers, there's always a need for further specificity. Each week, you'll endure timed written quizzes, reflections, and essays on top of your reading assignments. Despite my efforts to secure a good grade, he ultimately failed me.
Actual hell on earth. I suffered so much in this class I think I'm actually traumatized. Prof. Swanson has way too high of expectations, especially for first time dual credit students. Professor Swanson's class is not for the weak, but it is definitely possible. He has helped me by accommodating to my needs based on work schedule thankfully. But his grades are tough and sometimes hard to understand. He definitely taught me many lessons, even just learning how to learn. Simply put, don't take it as an easy credit, but for growth.
This is the worst professor ever! He gave all my essays and assignments a failing grade. He overworks his students with 3 textbooks to read for each week and on the same week he wants you to do essays and take quizzes over those 3 textbooks that you have read with a time limit of 5 minutes and written questions. He doesn't help out at all.
Dr. Swanson's class was a learning experience. His class is not easy and requires a lot of effort, but in advance, he will work with your schedule. He was very accessible and in order to understand his efforts and grading, I advise to meet with him frequently. Overall, a difficult class that promotes growth in your writing and other skills.

HORRIBLE. I tried extremely hard in that course and learned next to nothing. 3 different textbooks for a week only to never talk about them. I had him forever ago and he STILL works there I believe. Nearly got me to drop out. Confusing and if you didn't fit HIS views HIS writing you were basically done for. I switched my major because of him.
These reviews seem more reflective of the perceptions of the students who rated him than of him himself. He genuinely cares and genuinely TEACHES. If you want to come to school to LEARN, take Swanson. Please don't come to college with highschool expectations and rate based on these expectations He is not only exceptional, but also funny and genuine
This class was one of my prerequisites and I regret wasting my time attempting it under his teachings. Super uninspiring, never satisfied, ever. No matter how you apply his feedback. The feedback and grading is also done so untimely that you have little to no time to actually apply the feedback to the many drafts he wants you to complete.
Strict "feedback" that is supposed to be helpful, but it is not. He does not give you time to make the necessary changes, and nothing you do will ever satisfy his wants. Save yourself the headache from taking this course if you can. He is passive aggressive and always accused me of writing my work using external sources. Plz run if you can!!!!!
I only bumped him to a 2 because he's not an awful person or instructor. He cares about his students' success; HOWEVER, his expectations are ridiculous for a 2nd-year English course. I met w/ him regularly for feedback, talked through my process, & he even helped me write some of my topic sentences, & I still failed. No amount of effort is enough.
He is too smart for his own good and expects students to operate at his level. He refuses to answer questions directly and pushes students to contact him over every detail, then penalizes them if they don't. He is sassy, unhelpful when students fall behind, inappropriate in lectures, and does not use BrightSpace for grading or assignments.
Challenging, sure, but that's what college is for. If you take one of his classes you'll definitely struggle, but if you actually put in effort and listen to feedback you'll figure it out just fine. Plus, you'll GENUINELY learn something. He's also really generous when it comes to things like extra credit, extensions, and answering emails.
This is a challenging course; however, you will be pushed to cognitively grow! He is generous with extra credit, and if you are persistent in trying to be as specific as possible, it will pay off. Do not enter this class with the mentality of an easy A, and be open to shifting your perspectives multiple times.
