Very good person, Very friendly and very helpful. He also knows what he is doing.
a very good teacher. Easiest class. all you haveto do to pass is go to a few concerts and write a 500 word report for each of them. Once you get to your desired grade in the class you can quit attending to.
Very easy if you listen. NICE guy.
Very easy. this was chamber ensembles class so all he would do is come to class, tell us to break into our groups to rehearse, and then come back half way through class to perform for each other so he could critique us. Very nice, smart
Very nice, helpful, charming teacher. If u pay attention, take notes,go to four concerts & write 500 words report on each,u'll be fine. His xams r reasonable as well.Knows what he is talking about.
WONDERFUL teacher. Hes very knowledgable, fair, and laid back in class. Tests are pretty easy, just read the book and youll do fine.
good teacher, but will not make your life easier if you don't do your homework (4 reports and some extra credit). Loves to give extra credit to keep students happy. Fair on the tests and lets use notes (no book), easy and understanding.
Piece of cake. 4 reports plus as many extra reports as you want until you get an A. Way cool guy.
Cool guy..kinda weird. Extremely easy class. He says really random things and reminds of Mr. Smithers. Class couldnt be any easier i attended probably 1/2 the time or less. Don't worry about tests and quizzes they are easy just do reports on time and a couple extra credits and u'll be fine.
Easiest teacher ever. Got a B easily. All we had to do was 4 small essays. TAKE HIM !!
I went in with some hope of getting better classically, but all I got was frustrated. It's okay to be easy on a general education class, but not on a performance ensemble. If you are a well trained musician, don't take this class. It will only make you pull your hair out.
Dr. Thompson is a nice guy, but he rarely comes to class. I hope that his pay gets docked because I paid to take a class from a teacher that would actually show up every once in a while!
Dr. Thompson is very easy going. if you do all the writing assigments you will get all the points early and won't have to go back. can b.s. on the assignments and still get full points. easy A class.
a real cool guy; easy going; really cares about the substance of the class, without being to strict with minor details such as being a couple minutes late every once in awhile. a knowledgable doctor with a lot of really interesting anecdotes and information
I took his online class. You can finish the course at your own pace. There were a few writing assignments and you must attend an orchestra. Other than that the class was straightforward. Just read the material and you'll get an A.
I took the online class, and this teacher is very understanding/helpful. The online class may be confusing at times because the cd-book is required to view quizzes/tests.
I took the online course which was fairly laid back since he let us finish the course on our own time, instead of having specific due dates.
Veery helpful answer questions promptly. Great class for busy people! ONline class!
steve is awesome! he's so nice and willing to help you whether you're in his class or online... he just really is a cool dude overall and i loved that we were assigned to go to an "orchestra" concert b/c i got to go the nutcracker and I LOVED IT! =)
This is a fully online class on music appreciation. It uses a great set of CDs and an integrated website to play excerpts of music to teach you about all different aspects of Western Music. The teacher also set very interesting though sometimes challenging assignments. He was very prompt in replying to questions and grading and giving comments
Professor is very clear in what he expects. If you do your work and read the sections then you should be fine.
This teacher is very helpful and understanding to his students' needs.
I had an opportunity to take his on-line class and I can tell you I enjoyed it very much. He uses awesome CD material. I got hooked on this CD and learned a lot about music. Dr. Thompson is a great teacher who can help you in any way he can. He is also very conscientious and trustful toward his students. I would definitely recommmend his class.
he's the coolest Dr. around
Great Professor!
I really enjoyed this class!!! You are able to choose the way you study, online, F2F, or both...it was really nice to have that option.
The most notable aspect is the easiness of the course.
He offers this class in 3 different modes (online, on-campus, hybrid (both modes mentioned)) and I chose his online option. Although this class was fairly easy, don't think that you won't take away anything from this class. His supplemental activites are a great way to expand on the course materials and allows you to apply what you've learned.
This class is very untraditional and i loved the use of mixing online assignments with in class lectures.
Prof Thompson is hella chill. His online muhfl 321 class was really good. You'll know exactly what to do and it shouldn't be that hard to get an A as long as you don't BS him and actually put thought into what you do. It's all on the points. Take this class if you wanna learn more about music.
Instructor provides a true a la Carte class format that will fit almost anyone's life situation. It can be taken 100% online, in class, or a combination of the two. Even the On Music Appreciation CD that is used in lieu of a textbook is optional, as long as the other work is completed. I used the 2-CD set and learned alot. Great course!
Professor Thompson uses a great format for the class. He allows the students to work at their own pace. Oh, it was an online class. I was able to finish in less than two weeks. Professor Thompson responds quickly to questions from students and has an interest in their success.
great class. I learned a lot about music.
Good Teacher.
Like many others I showed up for another prof.'s orientation. And it was the BEST thing I ever did! I dropped him and added Thompson. Fantastic class, you really do learn even though it is ONLINE, simple, self-paced, a la carte (how much do we LOVE the points system?!), a truly well developed class and design. Thank you so much Prof. T!
Professor Thompson is so great! He made the class really fun and easy and I would definitely recommend taking him!!
Great and easy class!
I'll recommend this class to anyone. The course is very interesting and beneficial. Dr. Thompson is the ideal instructor. He's cool & hot like a rock star.
I loed this teacher he was fantastic and the course wasn't so bad. :) If I had to take this class over again there would be no complaints.
I took the Online version of the class and really enjoyed it. Steve trys really hard to have all the students get "A"s in the class. Steve assigns many fun and interesting assignments and not all of them are manditory. I really enjoyed this class and would take it again in a heart beat.
Great teacher, responds back in a timely matter.
Great class and very easy.
Awesome course! I learned a lot from the comfort of my own home, and had a lot of fun in the process. I still don't have any musical talent, but my appreciation for the history and composition of music has grown tremendously. I would recommend this course to everyone!
This class was so much fun! Maybe because I love the music, but it is not only because of that. Mr. Thompson is very nice teacher. He has good knowledge of music, extremely good personality, and the fairest level of grading. I learned a lot, enjoyed the course, and would recommend for everyone.
Really fun class! I like the choice of assignments.
I took the online class. You get good grades if you study hard for the tests/quizzes. Midterm and Final are easy.
The assignments snd discussion boards were great. I took MUHFL 300 online, too. In my itunes I now have Chopin and some other new and terrific music that I learned about from other students in the class. If you want to broaden your horizons take this class. I also highly recommend this class for those who not only listen to music, but experience it
Cool teacher, a pretty easy class. Just have to attend lectures and take notes for about 2 months and can get the rest of the points on blackboard assignments+the online text book assignments.
Great teacher. I learned a lot and enjoyed what I learned. Dr Thompson was very helpful and easy to contact. I would recommend him as a teacher to anyone, and will take a class again from him if possible.
Wow! I never knew I could take anything this easy in college!!! Thompson's 8week online class was easy. He provides a veriety of ways to earn an A in the course. I completed the course in two weeks under no pressure at all. You can work the assignments at your own pace as long as you turn them in before the final day.
Professor Thompson is like the quintessential cool teacher. He's the best looking professor at ARC too.
This class was extremely flexible in its requirements. Professor Thompson gave the class a whole bunch of options for earning points, and we were responsible for choosing what to do...it let us aim for the grade we wanted.
You have to do work, but its fairly easy work. I learned a lot in this class. Great teacher explains everything. No reason you can't get an "A".
Great Teacher
entertaining way of looking at music history, this class works for every kind of life schedule
He really encourages you to go for the gold!
Just do your work and you'll get an A. His class would fit any schedule so take that opportunity but don't take it for granted. Seriously, getting an A in his class is very easy. It's a bit time consuming, but not difficult at all! AND, he's very helpful and will go out of his way to help you!
Wonderful teacher! Mr. Thompson is a very inspirational teacher! Completely self-paced class. Whatever works best for you! That's his goal. You choose how you want to collect points. Putting extra effort in your assignments means additional bonus points. You really "reap what you sew" in this class. I highly recomend it for self-motivated students.
Steve is one of the coolest teachers I've ever had, and he does everything he can to help you do your best. Awsome guy.
Prof. Thompson's class was fairly easy. It would have been better had I had any musical knowledge before signing up for the class.
This professor is informative and helpful. The class was great!
This was a terrific class for me, it was self paced and the prof. was very helpful. I would recommend this and have to many of my friends. Prof. thompson thanks for giving me knowledge about music to share with my students.
Great self paced online class. he allows you to decide what grade you want by giving you all the assignments up front and allowing you to choose what you do
Awesome! This is a good self-paced online class. You can pick the works you want to do and earn credit for it. Steve is also helpful. Recommend this class.
Always on time with work and emails.
If you want an easy but well earned A in music, this is the prof you want.
This was a great class. The teacher always responed to emails and the the assingments were clear and understandalbe.
This was a great class if you are self-directed. Not good for total procrastinators. Prof. Thompson made everything easy to understand. He was completely accessible for questions/guidance. A great experience!
I really like him. He is the best professor who I've never seen. In the beginning of the semester, I was really bad when I took Introduction to Music because it was a short-term class. Hence, I dropped out this class. However, I saw Professor Steven Thompson, and talked with him. He made me feel more confident, and helped me so much. Best professor
I'm a bit bias, because i love music and am a musician- buti really enjoyed the class; it was very strait to the point (if you don't get an A it's because you didn't want it!) Good Luck!
took his short term online course.. u are an idiot if u cant earn an A in this class because he gives us so many different options for to earn points. hes always there to answer your questions as well. as long as you are a self directed learner & meet the deadline on time u will be fine! p.s. he's very good looking btw! thats always a plus;]
This was a great class, especially if you're an independent learner. It is totally self paced and your grade is determined by how much work you put in to it. The professor was really cool and was always available if you needed help.
The best teacher ever had.Take him
Class format is great. I love that you are able to work at your own pace. However, I didn?t particularly like his lectures. He didn?t actively engage the class... Just talked, and talked, and well you get the point.
so i thought i was going to fail, and i got an A. and because of him i can finally appreciate jazz. thank god. he's probably the best music teacher at ARC.
Easy online class. Many different options on earning an A. I did have to take a day off work to go to a mandatory orientation that didn't teach me anything, but that is the only downside.
I've taken an online class with Dr. Thompson and I've got an A grade just for three days! So, it's a way too easy class with lots of different ways of how you can earn that easy grade. That doesn't mean you can get good grade for nothing, but professor has so many choices that can fit any type of learner. Take him!
Dr. Thompson is a very good teacher. He has a different teaching style that works for all individuals. He is very helpful so do not be afraid to ask questions. Do your work and easy to earn an A. I DEFINITELY, strongly recommend this professor. I would definitely take him again if I had the opportunity. Job well done Dr. Thompson!
I came into this class not knowing a thing about music, and I learned a lot. The class is self-paced, and Dr. Thompson responds to all discussions in a timely manner.
Awesome and easy class. Totally recommend. Self paced and yet you still learn a lot. Hes very helpful and theres lots of ways to earn an A.
Dr. Thompson's online Music Apprec. 300 class was fantastic! He makes it painless to get an A. It's based on points accrued so if you do poorly on one thing, you can do another assignment of your choice to make up for it! It is self paced so u can do it in a month or a weekend! I highly recommend this class!!!
Dr. Thompson is an awesome teacher. He was very quick to respond to any and all emails and any question on the discussion board. I liked how you could decide how to earn your points and once you get the point value you want, you are done with the class.
Dr. Thompson is the BEST! really fun class and you can do everything at your own pace. he is also very helpful and responds to questions right away! you don't need prior knowledge of music, it's really basic. TAKE THIS CLASS! plus he is really nice and cute :D
Finished his 8wk online couse in 10 days with an A. I am awesome. So is Prof. Thompson. Take him.
This is a wonderful course. I started on the class on Sept 3rd and finished on Sept 19. The student gets to choose their learning style and whether they wish to do an online, face to face, or hybrid class. This professor is very accessible and quick to return e-mails.
This class was fun. I will highly recommend it to others.
This was the easiest class I have ever taken. You do your work at your own pace and when you get the grade you want your done. I wish there were more courses like this. I definitely recommend it.
This is a good class. You learn a lot about different aspects of music and the professor lets you go at your own pace- finish the class in a day or take the whole semester to complete. I definitely recommend this class and teacher!
This class is great way to fill your humanities requirement. You can complete the course in one day if you choose to. The OMF textbook goes into depth about music, though if thats difficult for you, Dr. Thompson has provided many other ways for you to earn A.
Awesome class! Great way to get GE. Everything is up to the students, nothing is required to turn in. This option let me finish the class in less than half the semester!
Fantastic class. I learned quite a bit and really enjoyed it!!! Thanks...
His class is very lenient. There are tons of ways for you to receive points to pass the class. 9000+ points was easy to achieve! He's a funny teacher and I really recommend taking him! He's easy to talk to and you'll be able to get an A in this class easyyy (:
Professor Thompson is awesome. He goes on a point system, so once you reach the points of the grade you want in the class, you're done. He offers tons of points too, so everyone should get an A, if they just do the work!
Very good teacher! Easy A if you do work that is not hard but interesting. Higly recommended!
I thoroughly enjoyed music 300 with professor Thompson and learned a lot about different genres of music. Mr. Thompson is an excellent professor.
Really the class is what you make it. You can get an A pretty easily as long as you keep track of your points!
Easy A as low as you keep track of your points and due dates.
This guy is absolutely awesome! I was in his online music class and it was the funnest class I've ever had. There are a total of 24,000 (seriously) points you can get, but you only need 9000 to get an A - you can choose which assignemnts you wanna do. Take him! The class was super laidback. He's a really, really great teacher and an awesome person.
This class was awesome. Mr. Thompson wants his students to pass his class. This class requires you to put a lot of effort but it isn't too stressful if you are very constructive and hardworking. There are so many ways to accumulate points in this class w/different assignments. I enjoyed learning music w/Thompson. He really knows a lot about it. :]
This was a great class to take especially if you have a busy schedule. The lectures were interesting, and being able to garner points on line as well as in class was a great mix.
Intro to Music was the easiest class I ever took at ARC. ALl you do is accumulate points to get the grade you want. Anyone should take this class with a busy schedule. It is also a good class to complete a GE requirement if you are not interested in the arts area. Anyways, you should purchase the online cd to finish earlier within the term. Easy A!
take this professor.. super easy.. eventhough you sign up for his face to face class, he will give you the option to do everything online!! self pace as long as you finish before the semester ends..
Absolutely amazing teacher. Great lectures! Getting an A is absolutely doable
He is an amazing teacher. You will learn a lot from his class and at the same time get a very easy A! This class goes well with busy schedules because it is self-paced and he doesn't ask too much of you. Definitely recommended!
Cool Teacher. Wants his students to pass. Has a VERY MONOTONE voice lol! Attendance not mandatory. Work hard and DO your assignments and it's an easy A.
This class was wonderful in the way that it was set up. Students get what they put in. If you want an "A" you need to complete the amount of work that will earn you an "A". If you want a "C" and have already received enough points for it, then you do not have to complete the rest of the assignments. The professor is good with answering emails & ?'s
I really love Dr Thompson's selfpaced class. I also learned a lot,he make me love music and pay more attention what kind of music and music instruments they play now. Thanks for being a such good professor. Attend his class you will love it.
Teaching and grading method was the best I've encountered yet.
Best online class ever took!Finished the class in 4 days!Got an "A"! Amazing nice teacher, emails back asap!!
Very easy! assignments are not required! the only way you can fail is procrasination or laziness!
His Online class is the best I ever had! I have to say that the Music Concepts you learn get really Complicated & Tricky =(. But I really like the grading system in this class. You just do as many assignments as you want until you are satisfied with your total score. You don't have to complete all of them! I got an A, but it took patience :).
Doc Thompson was amazing. I chose to do his F2F lectures and finished his class a month early. It was extremely easy and worth going to. I learned a lot about music. He was really sweet and extremely generous in giving out extra assignments and helping people pass his class.
I took his mufhl 300 and 321 class. He made me love music now. I also attend his concert twice, he is really a great professor plus handsome guy. He offered more20000 points,as long as you finish 9000 points and you are done. Great online class...
Just finished the 8 week MUFHL online session, and to tell you the truth I didn't really have any interest in the class. Mr. Thompson made it enjoyable and very convienant for all students though. It's an easy "A" and all you have to do is the work. Just pace yourself and you can be done even a week or two before the session is over.
Easy A, interesting lectures (but aren't mandatory), self-paced class. Easiest class I've ever taken at ARC.
I got an A in this class. Professor Thompson was a great instructor and he was very quick to reply to any questions I had about his class.
Great teacher, straight forward, I took the online class and loved it. He has lots of extra credit points no way to fail and he sets the class up in a way that you learn alot about music... you wont understand until you take him.
BEST CLASS EVER!
Awesome class to take online. He is crystal clear in his syllabus and you know exactly what you have to do to get a A in the class. The online section is self-paced.. which I didn't even start until one week before the end of the semester, and I still got an A. Easiest 3 units I've ever earned. Take this class, you won't regret it! A+++ professor!
Took his online class, you wont find an easier class or teacher! Finished the class within a week and a half! gotta love it!
Great Professor! Really helpful!!!
It may just be the class I'm taking because it's so easy but Thompson seems really fly-by-night. He zips past lecture slides (and powerpoint with the occasional listening of a song is all the class is) and slightly criticizes those who can't keep up. He structures his class so that students will just fly through and he can get his credibility.
Great Professor!! Took his online class and passed with an A. The class was some what easy, you got a chance to finish early. You get to work for the grade you want. He is a very helpful professor and I learned a lot from his class. If need to take a music class, I would highly recommend taking his online MUFHL 300 class.
Fantastic guy and amazing conductor. Coolest guy you'll ever meet and I look forward to this class every Wed. All you need to do is to play an instrument and read music
Online class is self-paced. Do the assignments, earn your points, and when you've received enough points for the grade you want you're done. Since the first part of the semester is typically slow I spent extra time and completed the class in about two weeks. I didn't have to think about the class for the rest of the semester. Easy A!
I greatly enjoyed Professor Thompson's class. I learned so much about the intricacies of music that I didn't know prior to his class. I like the fact that his online class is self-paced, but you have to be disciplined when it comes to getting everything done by the deadline, which you can easily overlook.
Do the online course. If you have a musical background and know piano theory/ear training you can do it in one day.. Like me! Easiest class.
One of the easiest classes you'll take at ARC, you won't regret it. He loves what he teaches and makes it easy. Have to admit, class can be pretty slow at times. He grades everything on his own point system so bad grades can't hurt you, so its a stress-free class! I very strongly recommend him.
Really fun class. Easy.
The textbook is an online program for online MUFHL 321. Class is do at your own pace, the only deadline is at the end of the semester. Must get at least 5000 pts from online program, then can round out with discussion boards and essays. Earn 9,000 pts and you are done for the semester. Super easy!
This is the easiest online class I have ever taken. You go on your own pace. You can choose any assignments/quizzes to earn your points. There is a questions forum for if you need to clarify an assignment. I recommend taking his online course..
easy to get A, attending is not required. love him. gonna take him again this spring 2013
I don't know what you guys talking about saying this class is the easiest!! This class is awful if you take the online course!! So much work to earn few points it's ridiculous! Each assignment is 45 questions and that will be only 1% of your grade so imagine how many assignments you have to do!!!! Horrible experience
(online class) you have to purchase the online book for $90.00 to do this class. It is all self paced. You determine your grade by how much work you do. Work is not easy if you have no music background..read chapters online and then take test, mid term and final.
The one two below is totally wrong. The course is taught by the online course purchase. I got a B and did next to nothing. I had 6 other classes (3 CSU and 3 ARC) so I didnt bother with much here. It was a cake walk. Just do the assignments and hit the point threshold. If you dont care about a B it's even easier!! Take this class! Counts for CSU C2
The class is great. The professor is great. Everything is great! High recommend this class!
Dr. Thompson is an awesome guy! He's super approachable and easy to get along with, and a pretty decent conductor. All you need to receive an A in orchestra is to show up to every Wednesday rehearsal and to the concerts! The professor makes it real easy to succeed in all his classes. This isn't my first class with him.
Have taken 2 of his classes. This class is super easy you need like 9000 points and there like 18000 points available to be earned. I actually did my first class all in one day. Only complaint is mandatory orchestra attendance (both times my fiancee and I would rather have listened to 50 babies crying) but all in all one of easiest classes ever.
Such an easy class! I completed it all in the first few days. It's self paced and gives you so many ways to earn your points. Easy A!! Highly recommended course!!
There is so much information to retain;however, he goes by a point system and not by percentages. Good luck.
Class is an online textbook with tests after each chapter . No interaction with him at all. Had some issues and never responded to any of my e-mails. It's impossible not to get an 'A' because of all of the opportunities he offers for credit, but you have to put in some effort. There was 120 students in class so I'm guessing he was busy, but still.
Confusing and long syllabus. For an easy online class at your own pace without any feedback, input, or facilitation, Steven Thompson is for you. There's not much more than the $120+ pre-packaged online course. He checks in on the online discussion about once a month. Slow to grade assignments. Extra credit assignments not very relevant.
This is a college level course? Almost too easy. You're on your own--he simply activated the web site waited for the term to end. Announcements are still for last term. No answers to online or e-mail questions. Discussion board assignment are identical to his other course. You can even repeat and roll over points if you failed his class before.
Love the guy.
Several simple assignments in D2l, an OnFundamental music course and mandatory attendance of a college level performance. Need 9000 points for an A and there are 18000 points possible. Do whatever type of work you chose to get your desired amount of points and you're good to go. Highly recommended if you are looking to get your GE out of the way.
This class was not so easy considering I have not had a lot of music background. The online testing was ok, but you could retake over and over til you got a good grade. 30 page syllabus that could of been written by my elementary school kid better. Good luck getting a response from him from email. Only good thing was you could set your own pace.
Pretty good teacher. I wasnt able to attend the orchestra performance, so I got dropped from an A to a B, make sure you attend at all costs, or your A goes out the window.
Used two different websites, d2l and connect4 education. Was a little confusing at first but once I figured it out it was very easy. Based off of a points score, not letter grade. Do your assignments and you'll pass.
Requires 9,000 points earned for an A, 7000 for C. Stop working when you want to. Required to get at least 5000 points in online program (out of 10,000 available) and can do essays and discussion boards to round out points. Super easy. Whole course is open at the beginning so work ahead and finish early. No concert attendance required in summer.
Going to his class will feel pointless some days because he just goes on about random stuff, but he's pretty funny and can pull up some interesting things to talk about. He's invested in his students, but he can get dramatic. You usually have 1 paper a week only ever a page or 2 long. Grades easy. Easy A if you show up.
Go to class, listen to the lectures, take good notes, do the assignments, and you'll pass the class. 9,000 points are required for an A. Focus on the journal entries, essays, attend the orchestra performance, and you're golden.
He knows his stuff, is approachable, and has a sense of humor about it all. Human and kind; I learned a ton.
Great orchestra director. Learning both as a student and as an aspiring director.
I love this guy! Picks challenging music and then supports us through it. Respects the orchestra as musicians and as people.
They way he sets the class up is really cool. There are 16,000 points available but you only need 9000 for an A. This means you get to pick and choose what assignments to do so there is a lot of flexibility. This is definitely an in "easy A" introductory class. I learned a lot about music theory and enjoyed the class.
Super easy online music class. Even if you don't have a music background (like me), you can easily get an A. Grading is by a point system and is the point breakdown is clearly listed in his D2L manual. You do have to attend one orchestra performance, which is a pain in the but but very doable. Highly recommended for an easy GE class!
Such an easy class with an incredibly dope professor. I only went to a lecture once and I got an A.
I took MUFHL 300 during Fall 2016 with Professor Thompson, All I can say is that he is an easy A. You have a total of 30 units to do on the website being given to you and you will pass with an easy A. There is a mandatory Orchestra Performance, if you don't go then you get dropped a letter grade. Highly recommended Professor.
Professor Thompson is such a great professor he gives so many opportunities to get an A in his class. The course work is easy and manageable. I was able to take this class along with chemistry and many other classes without feeling overwhelmed. I highly recommend him if you need to take this class
He is an excellent teacher! Makes the class really fun by watching videos. If you like music so much you would appreciate his teaching. Easy A. Charming and very approachable. An orchestra is a mandatory to go to if not your grade will bumped down to a lower letter. I would highly recommend him. I would take him again if I have to.
Professor Thompson is not only an amazing and easy-going instructor but the freaking conductor for the orchestra! His class was not only structured but easy to pass with interesting topics!
Professor Thompson is a very good teacher. He wants his students to learn and pass. He is the instructor for the orchestra performance. The orchestra performance is mandatory, if you don't go then your grade is dropped down to one letter grade. You have 30 units to do. The units are super easy.
Only professor I had that understands that student have a life outside of school. Easy work but a lot of it. Come to class, take notes, do research after every notes and make sure to attach lots of photos, no tests, attend a performance and boom- an easy A. Recommend.
Dr. Thompson runs the class in a fun, easy going way. That doesn't mean you don't have to work hard, but he respects the students and is understanding. I think he's a gem.
Professor Thompson is the definition of an awesome professor. His class is extremely easy, and he's got a great sense of humor. His lectures are fun as well. They primarily consist of learning about the history of music, watching videos/movies, listening to music, etc. Since it's almost impossible to fail this class, I highly recommend it.
Even though my music knowledge was a little rusty Dr. Thompson is an amazing instructor and basically leave your grade in your hand! If you do the work you can pass if not you get what you get! I would highly recommend him.
Even though my music knowledge was a little rusty (haven't read music since elementary school) Dr. Thompson is an amazing instructor and basically leaves your grade in your hand! If you do the work you can pass if not you get what you get!
I like this professor he is one of the best teacher ever. His lecture is very interesting and joyful. There is an online text book you will have to work on and one mandatory orchestra performance. Easy A class
Previous students have stated that you need at least 5000 points out of 10000 on "OnMusic Fundamentals" to be eligible to pass the course. The threshold was changed; you need at least 7000 on the site now. to be eligible to pass.
It is week four and he hasn't put any attention into this course- it's like he forgot he is teaching this class. He hasn't graded anything, or clarified anything. Lots of people are confused with the course and he doesn't respond to emails or to discussion board. You need 9000 points for an A with little room for error and tuns of work.
"I'm available via email and the Canvas Inbox regularly. Response time is usually 24 - 48 hours; possibly a little longer on weekends, holidays and break. " An absolute lie, especially for an online course.
I took the 8 week online course and it was super easy and straightforward. He communicated the criteria for each letter grade and stayed in contact with the class as the semester went along.
I really liked MUFHL 300. It was an amazing class and I learned a lot. The professor was very kind and there are lots of optional assignments that can get you extra credit. He really cares and wants all his students to get A's. You do have to put in some effort to take notes in class and work in the online textbook at home but it is not hard.
Professor Steven Thompson is a great professor to start with! One of my favorite qualities about him is that he is very humble in his success. He knows what he is talking about and is obviously well respected in the music industry and for good reason. He is very professional and makes it very realistic to pass his class. Highly recommend him!
Dr Thompson knows the material and is clear in his expectations. He is approachable and kind and that made it easy to learn. Those optional assignments get you extra credit and if you put in the effort, you will get an A!
(pt 1) It's a prepackaged course with near-zero presence from the professor. I had to go to his office just to remind him to post the remaining discussions; this was 3 MONTHS into the course (shows how much attention he pays to the class). There were multiple times he made mistakes, such as linking to a textbook we didn't need,
The class I took was online so honestly I do not know how he is in person. As for my online class I loved it. Homework was not to bad you were able to work at your own pace but don't get behind because you will have a lot to catch up on. He gave extra credit which of course is cool. Not a bad class at all and I plan to take other classes.
He is a wonderful teacher even I have never seen him. I took online class and I'm really enjoyed it. Just do what you're asked, and it's easy A!!! For this class it's better to have a piano at home in order to pass some tests.
Took a 6 week summer course and finished the class work in about 3 weeks. Super easy grader, tons of extra credit. Very active in discussion boards and responsive to emails. The reading is short but you learn a lot. The homework and quizzes are pretty simple, listen to some music and take a 5 question test on it!
Online class and It was clear and on point. Easy to navigate around. He does not make you do/write unnecessary extra work. 30 lessons/units altogether. For each lesson, you have to read and understand it. Then you will write a paragraph or so on it. Lastly, take a quiz in order to move on to the next lesson. Attending 1 orchestra is mandatory.
I like this prof. Straightforward in his expectations. Easy to talk to. Funny. Smart. Genuine. I learned a lot and would take another of his classes.
Such an easy class. To pass the class you need 9000+ points, i only did half the work and met that requirement. He offers tons of extra credit and you have to attend one mandatory orchestra performance. His lectures are just PowerPoints and sometimes some music videos, so its really easy to fall asleep but he doesn't seem to care.
One of the easiest courses I've ever taken. He wrote the textbook for class and it's online, interactive, and simple to use. Most of the grade comes from completing quizzes in the book, multiple choice and 100% passable if you read the chapter. You have to attend a music performance, write two short essays, and turn in notes from in class.
Professor Thompson is a good professor. He makes class simple and easy. He grades on quizes and journals. Quizes are online and base on chapters. He is an easy grader. Take him if you can
Rather repetitive music lectures, but a definite easy A. My main complaint is that he doesn't grade most of the material until the end of the semester, so it's hard to gauge how you're doing in the class. I turned out to have over 100%, but I didn't know that until a week after the semester ended.
Amazing teacher who opened my eyes to a world of music. Very easy A as long as you attend the classes and do the assignments. The assignments themselves are not to challenging. Would recommend this class and professor for anyone looking to fulfill an art requirement, or someone who doesn't know a lot about music but wants to learn the basics.
Prof. Thompson is an exceptionally easy teacher. I had him for orchestra. As long as you let him know why you have to miss a rehearsal, you'll still get an A. He's super chill and approachable. Just make sure you help him out with set up and take down at the concerts and he'll know he can count on you even if you have to miss some rehearsals.
I have zero prior music knowledge and this class was still an easy A. Nothing is due until the last day of class, which is nice but it's also easy to get behind. You can retake the quizzes as many times as you need to get 100%. However, you only get one attempt at the midterm and the final. Only downside is that you have to attend an orchestra.
I didn't have an issue with the online class structure. If I needed help Dr. Thompson was responsive. I'm frustrated because a huge chunk of assignments simply wasn't calculated into my final grade resulting in an F when I earned an A. I don't understand how something like this can be overlooked. Now I'm scrambling to resolve the issue.
The online textbook is $109. Everything you need to do is on the online textbook. You will do posts, one discussion, and two quizzes for each chapter. Some of the quizzes can be found online. I could've got a A, but I didn't do well on some of my quizzes. There are two papers too (orchestra performance, & about music from infancy to adulthood).
Professor Thompson's class is pretty individual. The textbook has exercises and assignments for points and exams in the textbook. Read the material because you will be tested on it. Lots of assignments.
Soooooooo easy. Took it as a fully online 8-week course and it was the easiest class I've ever taken- this includes kindergarten. Got the weeks worth of work over with in 1-2 hours on Sunday nights and didn't have to think about it until the next week. He rarely replies to emails but it's simple to catch onto the flow of the class. EASY A!
He worked with a publishing company to create his own online textbook so it's relevant. Tests included. Everything he teaches is straightforward, chapter by chapter. The topics are interesting and the chapter quizzes are easy if you read. I learned a lot from this class and enjoyed it too. He had us join his Napa performance, also much fun!!
Dr. Thompson takes a bunch of musicians with a huge range of ability and produces concerts that I'm proud to be a part of. He is understanding, supportive, and funny. He pushes us to be our best and is knows that people have a life outside of orchestra. He knows the music, treats everyone with respect, and raises us up to be better musicians.
Easy A class if you're willing to put in the required work. Homework and quizzes on the online textbook worth the majority of the points. 4 in class journal packets are really easy, just take good notes. Lectures are mostly spent by watching music performances and videos. There is 1 required orchestra attendance worth a letter grade.
Prof Thompson is really enthusiastic about music and lectures in a way that relates to his students. His class is a self-paced course where you can get an A by either coming to class and doing the journals or you can do all the work in the online textbook. Most of the in class work is watching music videos and taking notes on. Overall, easy A class
so easy. if you are just looking to fulfill the music requirement for graduating or transferring, take this class. It was so easy.
You can literally complete the whole online class in less than 2 weeks. If you need a class to meet an arts requirement on the IGETC then I recommend taking one of his classes.
This is a class I really enjoyed. The professor is clearly someone who loves his subject. He has clear expectations that aren't hard to follow. You can choose from a variety of things to get your points to get the A. I strongly recommend his class for some comedy and truly interesting lectures.
One of my favorite teachers. He is so unique to ARC. I took this class for general ed, and I had no real care for a music fundamentals class. Then it ended up being the best online class I've taken. His teaching style is unique and everything you learn is intriguing he's a good storyteller. Point system, pick the assignments you want to pass.
class is straight forward. He uses an online book he wrote himself, everything is contained in the online book. There are listening and reading quizzes with each chapter. 2 projects, one is to attend an orchestra concert and the other is a paper about music you like and have been exposed to.
Assignments consist of answering questions regarding the section you read about (multiple attempts), ear training assignments (multiple attempts), and an overall assessment of the chapter. You can complete all of this in one sitting if you wish. Occasional discussion board posts, which are super easy, and a mandatory orchestra performance. Easy!!
What to expect: 6 discussions (no minimums or anything like that), 2 papers (500 word (about music in general) and 1000 word (about a concert you're required to attend)), 31 chapters (pre and post chapter reflection, (1) 10 question quiz per chapter, and 1 music quiz per chapter 5 questions each based on what you listened to in the chapter) Easy A!
It was an easy class. He has his own textbook online you have to read each chapter which is like an article and take true and false quizzes. Essay Take it
He is a well-respected college music teacher and to pass his course, you have to participate. Also, attendance is very imperative to finish with an A grade letter. Finally, you will learn the art and history of music, leaving the course with consciousness of Opera, classical music, country, jazz, hip-hop, movie soundtracks, pop, rock, and R&B.
I don't know my final grade yet because he only grades your work at the end of the semester, BUT you do know how you're doing based on the software that he provides his lessons and exams on. His class was asynchronous and was easy, coming from someone who's been in music for a couple years. He's passionate about it and very easy to contact outside
students are on their own to finish the course. Prof. Thompson doesn't involve much with students so nothing much to say about him, but digital textbook of 31 chapters with quizzes, 2 essays, and musical Project, weekly discussions, the course itself is easy and works well for music lovers.
In this self-paced class, Dr. Thompson uses an online textbook that he authored to go through the course, which includes chapter quizzes. I found the book very interesting, and his insights and linked material throughout to be informative. He is kind and caring. I learned so much in his class and would gladly take another course taught by him!
Mr. Thompson is a wonderful Professor. His course was done online but there were some live evening lectures that were easy to listen too and actually fun to learn about music through the presentations. His grading criteria is upfront and if you do the work then you can pass. He always responded back to my emails in a timely manner. Would take again
This class is simple if you make sure to stay on top of your work. Course material was very straight forward which gets frustrating with the more complex material. Not so easy to get a hold of, I got one email response during the entire semester. I would take this course again just not the 8 week class.
He's an okay dude, pretty chill. Super easy discussion every week. Most of the HW comes from the online textbook, which he wrote btw. He had optional live lectures if you wanted more points. Some of them were interesting. The textbook work doesn't have set due dates. It's pretty easy stuff, but it gets tedious.
He is wonderful and caring! It turned out that on the final grade I didn't finish all of the textbook work (very easy and quick) and finished with a C I email Professor and asked him 1 day is all I need. He did give me time and I finished the semester from a C to an A I thank him the world! Don't do what I did! check if all the work is finished lol
Seriously, you can't go wrong with professor Thompson, he is flexible and extremely reasonable. The textbook is interactive and most of your points come from that. The discussions are lighthearted, fun and enjoyable. This is exactly how an online course should be. I have much higher standards and expectations from an online class because of him.
Professor Thompson is such an amazing instructor. His homework is super easy! There is just no way you can fail this class. His weekly discussions are super fun and interesting. He gives out extra credit so take advantage of that!!!
Responds pretty quick to emails. Weekly discussion posts and responding to 2 people. Everything was due at the end of semester. Work at your own pace. Quite easy, just need to memorize some music terms. Would take this Professor again
Professor Thompson, was great! I took his course in the Summer 2022. He responds quickly and gives clear instructions as to what is due. First week of class I did not have my book, he was very understanding and let me make up the work. TAKE HIS CLASS!!!! There is no reason you should fail this class.
This class fulfills CSU GE-breadth C1 (Arts) weekly discussion posts are actually FUN (Post a song related to that week's subject). No class meetings, weekly discussion board, do the weekly readings and do the assignments at your own pace. Attend the ARC orchestra concert. That's it. Take this class! No prior music experience needed
super easy! All you have to do is read some articles and take quizzes on them. You could get a lot of help for these assignments from quizlets. A couple annoying short writing assignments, but overall, great class.
This professor is honestly very easy to take. Just do the quizzes and assignment that you have to buy within a program. He is also lazy, waited the last week to grade the "Standard assignments". Because of this I received the grade that I did. His program crashed and it didn't save my submission so he told me redo it, but he didn't give me points.
I'm an advanced classical pianist taking this class to fulfill requirements, and I believe that it would be very challenging for anyone without prior music knowledge. The online software used was subpar, and it would be very difficult to tell what's important and what's not in the lectures. With that said, you won't go wrong taking Dr. Thompson.
Responds to emails quickly and provides fun weekly discussion posts. Used an online textbook that was self-paced, but you have until the end of the semester to finish. There are quizzes after every chapter and a timed midterm and final. Some annoying writing assignments and recommended attending the ARC Orchestra performance for credit. An easy A.
This class was very fun! Assignments were really easy and could be redone as many times as needed. Two tests but they only make up 5% of the final grade each. A few writing assignments, but one can be omitted by attending a concert at ARC. Also, he provides a discount on the textbook. I would take this class again in a heartbeat!
If you have a good amount of knowledge in music history/basic theory already, don't take this class. Only interaction with professor is weekly canvas posts, the rest is done in an online textbook that has lots of reading and hard quiz questions, BUT you can retake quizzes unlimited times before due date. Took more time than I wanted to be spending.
I took this class online, and you mostly do quizzes with infinite tries and, occasionally, a simple written report. If you do those, this is a very easy class. There is a textbook that you can use to get the answers, but there are alternatives... Going to a concert was also a requirement, with an extra credit opportunity.
Professor Thompson is super nice, professional, and caring. His coursework was pretty easy and not too heavy. There is a substantial amount of reading for the online course that I took ,but it wasn't too hard and I could skim through it. He loved vivid discussions and always made them fun and open-ended. Would definitely recommend!
I took this class online asynchronous. It was not a hard class but lots of work online and due each week on Sundays. There are mandatory discussion posts each week, a quiz each week, a midterm, some papers to write, a performance to attend, and a final. Overall the class was fine and a typical asynchronous online class.
I took this class during the summer in 6 weeks. There was about 9 quiz that were 10 questions each. It's a very easy class and can get all the work done fast. This is a great class to take if you are looking for something easy. There is 1 midterm and one final. All the quizzes and exams are multiple- choice. He accepts late work and is very kind.
Very nice professor, I just wasn't really expecting the class to be so hard. I'm an intermediate musician, so encountering Mozart and Beethoven originals all the sudden was rough. My fault tbh. But he never judged as long as I tried, which is what made the class fun. Just do your best and make sure you have time to practice. Seriously, practice...
Quick to respond to emails within 24. Textbook is $100 but he gives a discount code. LOTS of reading since it is asynchronous but not that bad. Quizzes are unlimited tries so that is a great thing. Extra credit just for going to ARC performance and extra 2 points for every friend. I was high school student and balanced this with other hw fine.
Easy class and great professor. There's a discussion post every week and small quizzes that go based off of readings. You need to go to at least 1 ARC orchestra for an assignment and can get extra credit by inviting people. The midterm and final are all based off of the readings and quizzes taken. He also gives a discount for textbook. 10/10 class
