works well with students. turn your phone off when you come to class and you"ll have no problems. wrote 4 papers through out the quarter. he teaches essay stucture. write like he wants and get a good grade. he is a very plesant person to be around. he used to edit for a major newspaper so he knows what he is doing.
He's very friendly and explains assignments very well. The only 2 things I would say is that he rambles too much. If you ask a question, he'll go on and on. The other thing is his laugh is kind of annoying. Not trying to be mean, but that's just my opinion. Overall, glad I took his class! Oh yeah, he also lets you out of class early a lot.
Very simple class, only have to write one larger paper and he gives you plenty of time to do it right. 2 Tests both easy. This course focuses on slavery so if that's not your thing I would recommend someone else. Over all he is very helpful and easy to get a good grade, if I needed another English class I would take again.
Structure of my essays has improved immensely. Covers material in an easy to understand way. Has a funny laugh. I wouldn't say its annoying though. Long explanations guarantee that every student understands the subject matter and terminology. Plenty of time given to complete assignments. Follow the course plan. Do not turn in late assignments.
I liked him he is a really nice guy. If you need help he will take the time to answer all of your questions, and offers good advise. There is a lot of independent reading that you need to do in order to do well. He gives you a good schedule of all the work it is that you will be doing. I enjoyed his class and having him as a teacher.
If I were you, I would stray away from Steven. I had a terrible experience in his class. He talked for the whole class time and it was very long and drawn out while he could have given us hands on activities to do to understand the content. Put a lot of his life into his lectures too, so it wasn't all about the topics he should have been covering.
I really liked him. Tobias is a tough grader, but he is very clear in what he wants from you. He is often funny in his lectures. He dedicates some days to just answer questions we have, especially before a test. Which I think is very helpful.
An amazing teacher he challenged his students to do well. He gives you multiple chances to rework your paper to get the best grade possible. I would take one of his classes again.
Although some liked him, others did not really like him. Steven spent most of his classes talking and having you sit in class and take notes. He is not the normal professor, so if you are a hands on learner, this would not be the class for you.
Steven is a tough grader, though he is very clear in what he wants and is will to help you. He gets a little off topic in his lectures and expects you to read a lot. He gives two tests, He assigns one large paper which is pretty much worth the whole grade. Good class. be sure to turn in the assignments ON TIME otherwise you WILL be docked.
Rambler and laughs at his own jokes. Encourages students to come in if they need help. Makes you work for the grade and textbooks are needed for his class.
Best teacher at EvCC. A little goofy, but has a great teaching style. He breaks up papers so you only write them sections at a time and don't procrastinate. Become a great writer because of him.
Nice teacher, but make sure you understand the work and turn it in on time! Very structured class
Tobias is a great teacher and I would recommend him. He breaks the curriculum up well for the student's success, and gives clear expectations on all assignments. He is willing to answer any questions you have, help with editing you work, and with any problems you encounter in his class. If you have to take English 102, then take it with him.
Tobias is a great teacher. I took this class Winter quarter 2015 and learned a lot. Attendance is necessary for passing and there isn't many grade opportunities (I believe we took 2 or 3 tests and wrote one long paper). The main grade was a 12 page research paper. As long as you put in effort, you should do well in the class.
Nice guy with a dry sense of humor. The class was incredibly hard. He was very picky about sources and we were assigned topics. In the end I couldn't reach the minimum length for my paper just because there wasn't enough information on my topic out there and he was also critical of fluffy writing and going off topic.
One of my all time favorite professors. Engl 103 is watching movies and analyzing them. He has a dry sense of humor, knows what he is talking about, and gets to know students individually. You need to give effort, he will give you what you deserve. I credit him for sparking my interest in film, which i am pursuing. All around likeable guy and class
I took his course summer quarter: twice a week for 3 hours. You read 3 essays which give bckgrd. to the essays you will write pertaining to some idea about the literary work. Steve has helpful lectures about the components in an academic essay and helps you step-by-step on how to achieve the ideal academic essay. He is very inspiring and helpful!
Great teacher, would take him again.
I took this course in the Summer of 2014. He is very clear with grading rubics and will help you to understand if you make the effort to ask. Plenty of notes through his PowerPoint which helped me immensely and have in other courses as well. He is funny and desires to help those asking for it.
This teacher is so great. I have never felt like the information was layed out for me to understand so clearly. Its awesome. If you just got out of high school, this class is a good first college class. He gives you tools that you can take with you throughout your college career. Also his laugh is super cute and hilarious.
One of the most down to earth professors I have had at EVCC. He has a PhD in English yet is NOT arrogant and require you to call him Dr like a recent professor. He is encouraging and very helpful. When I am ready to take another English course, I will definitely look to him as an instructor. He also has a quirky yet enjoyable sense humor!
Great teacher and it cracks me up that he cracks himself up! Quite the goofball and I can only hope I have more teachers like him.
I took his 102 class on slavery. Best class I've ever taken. He is a knowledgeable and intelligent instructor. Grading is based off of your work ethic, not your intelligence. Work hard and an A is definitely achievable. This class made me love English. No textbook, we used MLA handbook and books on slavery. I wish I could take this class again!
He gets of topic super easy on things that aren't needed. Be ready for PowerPoint lectures.
He is one of the best!!! I took his English 101C winter'16. Dr. Tobias is hilarious, and he tries to connect with each one of his students. He is very helpful. He walks you thru writing the 3 essay based on readings , step by step. He is a tough grader, show up everyday and do the work on time, and you will be do good!
Prof. Tobias' ENGL 102 class will thoroughly prepare you for your future as an undergraduate student. This isn't a class that you can get an 'easy A' in. This is the class for students who are serious about bettering themselves and their education. I would highly recommend it to those who are willing and able to put forth the effort.
I took this professor's English 101 class in the winter quarter of '16. I enjoyed his class and understood his teaching style, so I sign up for his English 102 class for Spring '16. Great professor! If you don't understand anything, ASK! He wants his students to succeed & will help as much as he can. Essays seem horrendous but are worth the effort
Dr. Steven's curriculum is very well organized. He gives a clear and precise instruction of what is required from students. He is approachable and always gives good feedback, but you need to work hard in his class to get your desired grades. keep your head in the game, don't wait til assignment due the next day or you'll crash and burn in the fire!
Lectures every day, willing to help you with essay assignments and gives good feedback on how to push it to an A, attendance is large part of grade. Try not to miss more than 2 classes
Steven Tobias is by far one of the best English teachers I have ever had. He sets up a clear curriculum that is easy to follow as long as you read the instructions, and he is a fair, honest, and helpful grader. I also can't be helped but to smile or even laugh at his jokes. He is someone who truly cares and is very willing to help his students.
Tobias was an excellent teacher. He really tries to prepare his students for future essays. He taught me a lot about how a college level essay should be constructed. His topic of contemporary slavery was also very interesting to me. I would definitely recommended him for an English 102 instructor for anyone who truly wants to learn.
I took Steven's 102 class on slavery. A real eye opener. Steven really does want all of his students to succeed, you do have to write a 12 page paper but he breaks it down to smaller, easier parts. He is very clear and concise on his lectures and what he wants in terms of a grading. I would definitely take this class again!
Dr. Tobias offers students an easily digestible and equally challenging course integral to their collegiate education. Coursework focuses on academic writing structure, MLA citations, and use of appropriate tone. Readings are very graphic and emotional. Lectures are accessible, informative, and even lively.
I thought Dr. Tobias was an excellent instructor. He has a very clear grading criteria but is very caring and respected. There are only a few major exams, as well as a 12 page paper due at the end of the quarter. I would definitely take him again if I could, you will definitely learn things that will help you in furthering your college education!
Tobias is great, and gives helpful feedback. Theres a lot of work/reading in the class, but hes an easy grader. Very understanding and genuinely cares about his students education/career.
I really enjoyed this class and would take a class of Stevens again! The topics we researched were really interesting and gave lots of help if you needed it. Hes pretty funny and I enjoyed the lectures even though there were few. There is quite a lot of work but if you spend the time you will get a good grade.
What a guy!! Always gives great feedback and is always there for help. You have to do a 10-12 page paper at the end of the quarter but he gives you so much help and makes it a very very easy process. If you don't want to learn or write about contemporary slavery- do not take this class (I enjoyed it though). He is a fantastic professor!
If you stay on top of the readings at the beginning you'll be fine. He gives you a schedule to help keep you on track with the major assignments which is really helpful. I know you're going to do it no matter what, but try not to procrastinate too much.
Great teacher, he understands your struggle and helps you in everything you need.
Steven is an overall great guy! He made this class decent. I was only attending Tuesdays and Thursdays for two hours every class period. He has one huge writing assignment, and made it sound difficult but it wasn't too bad. If you were struggling he was always there to offer help and pull you out of the struggle hole! He;s an overall great teacher
Dr Tobias is a great teacher and makes the class lighthearted. He is honest about all things and wont just give you advice about his class, but also outside of the classroom. The paper youre required to turn in he makes it really easy to do it step by step. You NEED to set aside time for this class EVERY night or else you will get way too behind
Tobias is a really good teacher. Engl 101 was a little below where I should have been, but even though I had already done it all before, I enjoyed his jokes and fun teaching style. He really cares about making sure every individual succeeds. He breaks papers down into parts. Don't expect a lot of feedback on papers, but ask questions anytime!
Steven is a quirky person that tells such horrible jokes you feel obligated to laugh out of pity. The lectures are so boring and terrible sometimes I wished my car would break down so I would have an excuse not to go to class. The essay is difficult but not nearly as hard as the research. Great teacher, awful class Stay Away
Mr. Tobias posted every due date at the beginning of the quarter. His tests were pretty easy and he gives you tools like notes and cheat sheets to basically ensure success. I did really well on the final essay because I got his feedback and followed his clear directions on the prompt and rubric. He's also super nice, caring and funny.
Mr. Tobias was one of the toughest yet the greatest English teachers I have ever had. I took the honors section of the class, even though I am not in the honors college, and I still passed with a good grade. He is very understanding and helpful but he doesn't do the work for you which I love! Readings are super important and keep up with the work.
Steven is a fantastic teacher! He is very helpful and gives good information outside of class. Steven wants you to pass and will do whatever it takes to help your grade rise. His lectures don't cover much information; most of the time he just tells funny stories. This class is mostly learning through trial and error. Take advantage of office hours.
He is very nice and he makes sure that if we need help, he is available to help us if we ask for help. We had to write 3 papers but he walked us through each sentence so he is very good at helping his students. He would also laugh at his own jokes which made the class a little more entertaining.
Dr. Steven began the quarter by giving us a spreadsheet showing all of the assignments and their due dates. He learned everyone's names within the first few weeks. He also gave us a heads up for each item on the list, and he carefully explained what was expected of us for each assignment. He's a great teacher lots of fun! 10/10 would take again!!
Steven is a great teacher to take for English 101. He teaches you the very basics in college level writing and aims to prepare his students for future essays. He gives great lectures and feedback which helps a lot in writing essays. There's little reading for the class, mainly just a few big essays. He's very funny and cracks up at his own jokes.
What a freaking awesome guy. Dr. Steven Tobias really cares about his students and wants to seem them succeed. He's personable and always makes his lectures funny and will add personal stories to it. Gives you class time to work on an essay, great feedback, very few quizzes, some readings, lots of peer edits, wrote three essays for a whole quarter.
Dr. Tobias makes his class engaging and full of learning. He encourages students to ask for help, like essay reviews. He is funny and laughs at his own jokes. He is a fantastic mix of serious and comical.
He is a great teacher. Would recommend him to anyone. Attendance is graded, and the work is not hard as long as you put good effort in. He gives you all of the tools you need to succeed. Super funny and easygoing teacher.
Dr Steven Tobias is a fantastic teacher! It is obvious that helping students to succeed is a priority for him. He is very helpful with giving feedback about writing and making suggestions on how to be a better writer. He keeps his lectures interesting and funny while also teaching important concepts for college writing. 10/10 would recommend!
He was really helpful and did a lot to make sure I passed, but he was also a really harsh grader
He is a very tough grader, but if you email him and ask for help he will make an effort to meet with you and help however he can. He wants you to pass his class and has opportunities for extra credit at the end of tbe quarter. Super nice and funny, cares about his students and supports them.
One of the best teachers I've had! He is SO easy to contact and is actually helpful. He makes it clear what is required. The annotated bibliography is a big part of the grade as well as the final paper, but if you take your time and do the research (time consuming) you should be able to get a good grade. He even gave us an easy extra credit option!
Mr. Tobias is nice, but I didn't like his teaching style or the class. We had to watch a LOT of his lecture videos, which were really hard to watch & long. His feedback felt like it was often opinion-based, and I felt like I wrote my paper based on his views instead of my own because he kept telling me I was wrong. Probably wouldn't take again.
The annotated bib. and final essay (11 pgs) make or break your grade, so be prepared to do lots of research. Instructions are very clear. Extremely helpful and quick feedback. Lectures are long and boring but helpful (I recommend watching them at 2x speed). Kind and funny. Just follow the guidelines for each assignment and you will get a good grade
HES AMAZING, he's super understanding and caring, as well as gives good feedback and listens to his students as well as offers help if needed. There is an 11 paged research paper /annotated bib and a lot of reading, but honestly, he makes it super easy to do and if you follow the schedule you will be set!10/10 make sure to ask for help! he'll help!
Loved the way he organized the class and formatted the quarter research paper which did take a long time and focus. He made it very easy to finish if you watch his lectures and go by his teachings. Great teacher!
Dr. Steven Tobias is an excellent teacher for ENG102. He is truly a one-of-a-kind, honest, yet caring, teacher who only wants the best for his students (even if it may seem harsh)! It was a great pleasure having him as a professor this quarter, and to all the future students, just be weary of workload, time management, and constructive criticism.
Be prepared to start off the class very stressed and confused. He gives you one day notice to get the required material and is VERY unhelpful when trying to figure out if online versions of the books are the same as the printed version. He has assignments due the first week that go with the book though shipping will not get it here in time. Bad!!
Dr. Tobias has the most organized online class I've ever seen. There's a schedule given at the beginning of the quarter providing due dates for everything. Each assignment, along w/ the 11pg final essay, is planned out to be done overtime so the load isn't heavy all at once. Succeed by watching his lectures & communicating.
DON'T TAKE HIM. The only reason I got a good grade is that I emailed him about every little assignment to make sure it was perfect. For the final essay and annotated bibliography, he requires every sentence to be word for word what he wants, countless tears were shed. If he is the only teacher available, wait or give up on English, save yourself
The quizzes and tests are pretty easy, but when it comes to the written work/final Dr. Tobias is such a hard/ picky grader.
I took him for ENGL102 and he was by far the best teacher Ive ever had. He made writing that 12 page essay so easy cause he splits it up into 4 weeks so its like 4 paragraphs each week so just write 1 daily and ur good. The quizzes in the first weeks are so easy. And hes empathetic if you just reach out to him and let him know whats going on.
Good professor. Has tests almost every day (24 hour window to complete most tests) Clear grading criteria, but course is based around one assignment (essay). Very work and test heavy, class is difficult. 102 is around slavery, which is a sensitive topic.
He just has a lot of workload. In order to pass the class, you genuinely need to read his daily check-ins and watch his lectures. At the beginning when he says that this class needs about 2 hours every day, he wasn't lying. Email him about every. single. question. That is what is going to help you pass. His memes are funny though.
Dr. Steven M. Tobias is a very great English teacher and I recommend taking any of his courses!
ENGL102 with Dr. Tobias was one of the hardest classes I have personally taken. This class should be 200-level due to the course load and expectations. You MUST watch and read everything if you want to pass. Do exactly as he says and email him consistently for an A. You may cry. His class will push even the best English students.
Tobias is an informational professor, but I did not feel proud of my final essay whatsoever. There was a quote in every paragraph and sounded extremely choppy. I got an ok grade because I followed his rules and criteria, but the actual essay he asked for was so incoherent and came to no real thesis. Good for a grade, but don't take to learn.
This professor at least knows how to do canvas properly. Organized, and structured. Very difficult class due to high expectations, but I would expect this in university. He is great with communication and wants the students to email him if you don't understand.
Based the entire class on one assignment and will pick apart every little thing in your essay, with very incoherent revisions. Finding work to use as citations was next to impossible and he still found a way to tell me that most of them are incorrect and not what he wants specifically.
Dr. Tobias is awesome. His lectures are funny, he's upfront and transparent about his grading, and it's clear that he wants you to succeed. Don't get me wrong, it's a challenging class with a heavy workload, but I know that pretty much everything I learned is worthwhile
If you want a class where you will learn stuff you will actually use, take Doctor Tobias' class. He is strict, you have to check in daily and watch the videos and do the assignments. However, he is clear and very direct about his expectation and if you do what he says you will pass. He set it up so you incrementally build on what you are learning.
He expects people to put in an unnecessary amount of work for an English class. Don't take the class with him!! He has a bunch of different rules and expectations for his assignments, which makes it more complicated. You'll have 6 different pages open to do one little part of an assignment. It's not straightforward.
Steven Tobias was the hardest class I have taken. I spent so much time on his work for him to cross it out and tell me to do it again. As a collage student taken more than one class I could not keep up. I would recommend taking this class as your "hard" class and only easy classes to go with it as this does truly take 20 hours a week to do.
Worst professor ever. Based the whole quarter off one essay and will pick it apart. Makes you do an outrageous amount of research. Sets his students up to fail, says if they miss a tiny piece they will fail. Says to ask him questions but he never answers and will tell you to watch lectures even if you've watched it multiple times. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Dr T was structured and communicative but intense. Constant videos, exams, emails to keep up on the weekdays. I had so many tabs open trying work on 1 thing and the research topic I got was not easy to research.Pick a research topic asap so don't get stuck with hard one. If you work weekdays, don't enjoy English I would suggest a different teacher.
Worst class ever. Tobias taught me nothing other then how to manage stress for 10 weeks. This should not be an English class, it should be a stress management class. "Dr" Steven M. Tobias was terrible. I promise you will regret taking his class within the first week.
Overall, the class itself is not very difficult, but the workload and time you will be spending will drain you. You will spend hours a day in this class researching and writing on his two major assignments. He is very specific about grading, you need to be concise and exact on what you say. Also, email him about everything if you want to pass.
Dr. Tobias is a very formal teacher and takes the class way too seriously for a 100 level class. You will spend an over the top amount of time doing research and writing your essay which both have to 100% follow his guidelines. I spent nearly 15 hours reworking my entire annotated bibliography at the last minute. This class was very stressful.
Dr.T was very helpful throughout this course. I must have emailed him 40 times during the course for help with certain aspects of my paper, whether it was about citations, reliable sources or anything. You do have to spend a lot of time on his classwork but he is very helpful if you reach out for clarifying questions or help on your assignments.
Most of his assignments are clear and it's very easy to get good feedback from him. He does assign a lot of work that have strict guidelines you have to follow so if you can't time management you're cooked like me.
Tobias is tough and admits it and he sometimes takes it too seriously but he also truly prepares you for a standard college load and cares about each of his students despite his harsh grading perhaps showing otherwise. I respected how responsive he was to feedback (he changed BOTH of my big two assignments grades letting me get a 98% in his class).
Personalities don't mesh sometimes, as was th case for this class. I was water ans this professor was oil. Truthfully I hated this class, and it was mostly because of the teacher and its structure he implemeted. But with this, I don't think it's because he's a bad teacher, just not my cup of tea.
The teacher doesn't teach you how to write, but what to write. There is little growth when you are sent to copy the exact sentences and change a few words. There is a lack of education, much more on precise instruction. Less 'teaching' and more directive. Also feedback is often vague, and comes across as a little rude
This professor will teach you how to write a proper paper which can help you in any other class you take. The class also focused on real life issues that changed my perspective. Dr.Tobias is quick to respond to questions and seems to truly want to help his students. He also has a quirky sense of humor that pops out here and there during lectures.
I spend a couple hours a week on this course. The easiest class ever.
Took this class with a friend after. The first few weeks are okay because of the light work until he begins talking about the annotated bibliography. You will need a total of 20 sources in five different areas with resources younger than the year 200 for it. Very negative towards students in his emails, and very rude in his replies and "feedback".
He is a good teacher. He makes clear lectures that you need to watch in order to take quizzes that follow. For his online class, you must watch the lecture every day and complete at least one assignment every day. He grades very fairly and is very open to giving feedback. You can always email him and receive help with what you are looking for.
Dr. Tobias is a great professor. He's organized and strict, but if you do the work and follow his instructions you will do well. He cares about students succeeding in his class and if you ask him questions he will help guide you, and he encourages you to ask questions. You do have to commit A LOT of time into this class everyday.
Dr. Tobias is the best professor I've ever had in my college life. His class can be tough, as he has strict rules for his students. However, I promise that your writing skills will improve a lot if you follow his instructions and try your best.
The first few wks, class had a lot of work due to being tested on every topic discussed in the lectures and textbook. As long as you keep up with the annotated bib and research paper, its not a hard class. Definitely reach out to Prof when you're confused since he does provide great feedback and help.
One of the best online classes I've taken! His lectures are insightful but short (7-11 minutes long). You only have to buy one textbook, and the other is a free PDF. Make sure to log in everyday from Mon-Thur since there is usually stuff due, but it's easy if you keep up. Email him if you have questions; he's super helpful and responds fast.
I took Prof Tobias for my humanities class, and it was a lot of reading, but there were only about 3-4 assignments a week, usually a discussion and a quiz or two. If you do the reading, you'll pass with flying colors. You may use the readings on the quiz. Easy class for credit would take again! There is also a final and a midterm.
HUM 101. In this class you do have to read, it's about 40 pages every 3 days in different books. However the books he had us read were ones I would've never picked up and really enjoyed. Assignments were really light, one discussion board a week along with two quizzes one for each section of reading. All the work was easy as long as you just read.
