Lots of experiential excercises. Brings real life examples and problems of society into the classroom. Great conversations and group discussions.
great prof.!! he is one of the few prof.'s that have a genuine concern for his students. he is more interested in your learning and growth than what you score on an exam. I would highly recommend this class, even if you are not going into Social Work.
This is the WORST teacher in the world, he must have written the previous reviews about himself b/c every student dislikes him and his classes. Has MAJOR ego issues, highly critial and demeaning to students and other faculty. He should not even be allowed to teach. Avoid him at all costs!!!!!!!
do not go into social work because of this professor.he is so rude in class to student and talks about other teachers behind their backs.if you aren't a little suck up your life will be crap.he's very narrow minded about all issues and doesn't like people who think for themselves.
This teacher makes school HELL!!!!The guy shouldn't even be allowed in the classroom. Definately would not take his class. Choose another major!
He is one of the best professors on campus. He is more interested in students learning, and developing professional skills, then keeping then babysitting. He is on topic, profesional, funny, interesting, caring--a great teacher. I read the previous comments-what a bunch of whiners. We don't want those unprofessoinal whiners in the program.
Professor Vigil is absolutely fabulous! =)
Surprised at the neg comments. Really, he's a great professor. Been able to approach him with ease, even when we disagreed on an issue. Have had many wonderful discussions with him in his office on topics that can tend to be heated. We have each left the discussions with respect and admiration still intact. Great Prof. Lots to learn from him!
He pushes you, but really helped me grow as a better student
I have had several classes from Professor Vigil over the past two years. After being in many different classrooms, with various teachers, I would have to say that Professor Vigil is a wonderful, caring, spicy individual who cares deeply for his students. I learned a great deal from him and utilize his teachings in my profession every day. =)
Great teacher! Very Hot
Major Ego. Head is as big as Mars! He has a lot of knowledge. However, its useless when accompanied by the amount of attitude behind it. Talks smack on everyone. Prima Donna..
Quite honestly I like this teacher. I know students who do not, but they still admit that he is a good teacher. He delivers what he promises. He is a grammar nazi, and admits that freely, but he helps you with APA if you ask for it. I keep his worksheets on APA and various other things because they help me with so many of my other classes.
He is my favorite teacher in the social work program. I've had him for 2 classes so far and they have been awesome classes. I highly reccommend him! He definitely has an atittude but it makes class interesting! Just be prepared to work hard.
Vigil is the best professor in the Social Work department! He makes class fun, and explains things great! He is the APA Nazi and will mark you down for the littlest of mistakes, but helps you if you need it. Great professor!
One of the best professors I've had. He is a blast and really cares about the subject. The papers are tough but the field trips are awesome.
Has an ego but extremely insecure. He once told our class if he caught us talking bad about him outside of class it would hurt our grade. Is that even allowed? He should grade fairly, but if he's trying to teach English he's in the wrong department.
This professor is the most arrogant, distracting and unapproachable professor I have ever had. I went into the course excited, yet this professor has successfully managed to suck all the motivation right out of me. I would highly recommend that students majoring in social work stay away from this professor if possible. Extremely unprofessional.
Pro. Vigil is an amazing teacher. Extremely knowledgeable. Was always open and willing to answer my questions. His classes made me a better student and social worker. He works hard to help his students succeed. Be prepared to work hard and you will learn a ton. Wish he taught more classes.
One of the best teachers i've had !! Very fun keeps class interesting and very nice...(: wish he taught more classes !!
A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. teacher! He is funny and cares so much about his students. He'll push you, but it's because he wants you to be a competent provider. I've aced all of his classes.
Professor Vigil is a very interesting individual. He is highly intelligent and knows a great deal about social work and cares about it so much. He wants each of his students to succeed and knows what each one of us are capable of so he pushes you for greatness. He is so open and willing to talk about anything when necessary. Wonderful professor!
Awesome teacher. at first i was nervous but he was really respectful of my ideas and opinions. His class was life-changing. For anyone who thinks he is horrible, they have their own personal biases that got in the way of learning some amazing concepts. i feel sorry for you. Anyway... awesome class, awesome teacher. made me more excited for SW
I took diversity with Vigil last semester and LOVED it. I got so much out of it and was really excited about pursuing SW. Man, was I dissapointed this semester. I don't know what happened, maybe it's the class dynamics, but it's like he's not the same person.
Excellent teacher. Really cares about his students. Hard, but worth it.
Very intelligent and funny and easy to get help from. Respectful towards students beliefs. Only thing I didn't like was we watched a lot of disturbing rated R movies that made me want to throw up and I think he could've taught just a little differently, but it was a great class.
He is nice teacher and really cares about the students. I should warn you though APA he is overly crazy about APA! he is like a hawk when it come to APA
He is the best teacher I have ever had.
Great Tacher. HE is very critical on APA Format but it help me improve. He waives quizes and discarded the final. Make sure you give yourself time to write 10 page papers in 4 days. It is rather easy once u understand the format.
Most challenging experience of my life. Vigil is an amazing teacher. He holds high standards for a reason. Social Work is not a major for people who are not willing to work hard. If you are looking to just get by with easy classes for your degree, I am sure you can major in Child and Family Studies.
I learned in Vigil's class that I do not want be a Social Worker. We went on many field trips to different agencies which made me realize that only very few people can really be helped. I am so grateful for Vigil for being honest with his class and helping us realize that it is not easy being a Social Worker.
Excellent Professor, pushes you outside your comfort zone in order to grow and become a skilled professional.
Professor Vigil, so much to say. . . He makes you work very, very, hard. He was the first professor that I felt like I was being pushed to the right amount. So much work, but it was all worth it. He's a nice guy outside of class. Sometimes narrow minded and hard to work with.
Vigil..i cant say enough good things. He has been the best professor i have had at WSU. His lectures are fascinating, and he REALLY cares about his students. He wants you to succeed but he also wants you to learn. I appreciated that he pushed me out of my comfort zones. Respect him and he will respect you. WSU and his students are lucky to have him!
one of the BEST professors of all time. all of the social work professors at weber are the greatest, they care so much about what they do and it shows in what they teach. i love them all!
The 3 ten pagers were intimidating at first but he outlines them for you so you only need to plug in the info. Weekly quizzes and 100 references. It was a great class and I really learned a lot plus got an A
Professor Vigil is an amazing teacher. He is strict and pushes you, but it is a good thing. He prepares you for life outside of a classroom. I am grateful that I can take so many classes from such an a amazing teacher! Class time is mandatory and there is weekly homework, but no exams. Loved this class!
This class is the first class that really gives you a good idea of what possibilities are out there for a future in social work. 3 10 page papers are required but he gives a very good outline to follow so its way easy.
I took SW3200 from him. He grades on attendance and there is three 10 page papers, but they really aren't that bad. For the most part, know APA, read the chapters and you will get an A. He is funny and a good professor. There is only 2 times where he made me feel like an idiot for asking questions in his class, so I probably should have been quiet.
Show up, do the assignments, write in APA, and get an A. Easy as that.
Worst teacher ever. Only cares about himself.
Prof Vigil lectures on Monday and class field trips to local businesses in Ogden, Utah on Wednesday's. Three APA papers are mandatory in this class. You pick which guest speaker or field trip to write your paper on. Textbook is only used for quizes. He swears in class, but is super funny, answers all your questions. Makes you want to come to class
3200 consists of quizzes and lectures on Mondays and Field Trips on Wednesdays. He requires you to write 3 papers on 3 field trips (2 of your choice). He is very clear in what he wants. APA is mandatory, so you better study it well. Vigil is tough, but he prepares you for life.
Professor Vigil is absolutely hilarious! SW 3200 is the first class that really give you an idea of the options that you have after you get your BSW. The class can be difficult (LEARN APA), but I learned so much. His teaching style aligns perfectly with my learning style. You can tell that he really cares about social issues and is willing to help.
Vigil is a really great professor. He is really tough on APA for papers but he really cares about his students and only wants them to be the best they can be.
Professor Vigil is my sister from another mister! He cares about his students as if they were his own children. I have been blessed to have met this amazing social worker. Having him as a professor has made my time at WSU more meaningful. You have to write your senior capstone, but it isn't too bad. You will be ecstatic when it is over! Holy Hannah
Pro Vigil is AMAZING! I loved his class because it was the SW class that made me decide that I truly want to be a social worker. Nothing is sugar coated, and the life of a social worker is given to you straight. This class will make or break your social work career decision. Remember "sizzle like bacon" and you will be a star pupil! :)
First time in Vigil's class and boy, does he get prepared to write your capstone and just life in general as a social worker! I am very grateful &thankful he sets HIGH expectations for his students! Know APA, read your book, and show up!His Lectures are very interesting! Please take notes and understand the different theories that are taught.
Vigil can be very intimidating, but as long as you show up (on time(don't be late constantly it's super rude)) and turn in the homework you'll do great. He's super insightful and the things he covers in this class is extremely fascinating. Also, start your final early! It's not super hard but it will be stressful if you wait until the last minute.
Vigil is given a bad rap for his obsession with APA, but really, it makes life so much easier after the fact. He's always there if you need advice and this class was a delight. You get to meet amazing people from tons of different agencies. The papers are a breeze. He gives you the format/outline and you just plug in the information.
Professor Vigil is my all time favorite. He tells you in advance what he expects out of you, so it is easy to finish the projects. I loved class lectures due to all the different topics discussed.
I loved taking his class. Everyone says hes scary but hes really a very kind guy. Hes real and I like that. I like that he says whats on his mind, hes funny, hes caring, and your thoughts matter to him. And if you do your papers the way youre supposed to you wont have to worry about that red marker!
I would recommend him for every class you can possibly take with him! The scary paper writing stuff, well you're in college if you can't take the heat to improve your writing skills why are you even here? Gives great constructive criticism. Passionate about what he teaches!
I loved having him as a professor. In this class, you do have to write a few long papers but he gives you a lot of guidelines on it but he is harsh on grading the papers. Youll need the book. GO TO CLASS. If everyone goes to class and participates he usually just gives you points for the quizzes and he will drop the final at the end of the semester
This was a great class if you want to be a better social worker. It prepares you for real life work and your masters program.
Vigil is one of the best professors I have had in college. He has high expectations in his classes, but he pushes you to be the best. There's a case study and an assignment due every Thursday evening. Small easy A discussions every week as well, a brochure pamphlet you make on a disorder you select, and a large take home final. Take his class!
Professor Vigil is hilarious. This is a 2 credit course, but I felt like it was a normal 3 credit course. There's 2 ten page papers, weekly quizzes, weekly discussions to post to, and a final assignment where you have to find 100 resources. He dropped the final exam for our class. His grading is tough, but he gives you a chance to fix your errors.
He gets off on the fact that he is seen as an intimidating person. He likes to portray that he is doing everything he can to help his students succeed but refuses to offer support, is incredibly rude, and absolutely unavailable as an advisor. If I would have known this is how my experience would be at WSU, I would have gone anywhere else.
Professor Vigil is honestly my favorite professor I have taken a class from so far and I am a junior. He is so knowledgeable and will explain to students what they need to do in great detail. Would take any of his classes again 100%!
Gives clear instruction which is so helpful. Seems intimidating but is actually very friendly--it's mostly just RBF & not his personality. Doesn't put up with bs and will call you out on it, which frankly is a good thing if you expect to be a decent social worker. Seems tough but really just pushes you to meet your potential.
Vigil is very specific with what he expects, which was a plus to me because other SW professors have left me lost with expectations. Get ready to write! You'll start your capstone and field placement, & it's a lot. I feel more confident about APA because of how tough of a grader he is. There is some paperwork to do and assignments. Great profesor.
I absolutely loved this class! Everyone says that he is a scary professor however I truly loved his lectures. He was funny, educational, informational, and personable. I felt like this course readied me to start my social work career. I enjoyed all the lectures and papers. There are two 10 page papers, weekly "field trip", and weekly discussion.
If you have the chance to do your bsw somewhere else pls do it. NGL this man probably made me cry about school every night. He is very smart and he knows that, but his lectures are good if hes not calling out people in the class. If you take his class good luck, Charlie.
Wasnt horrible, he dropped the final exam due to participation. There are two 10 page papers. Dont expect him to answer questions, even if you try to find the answer before coming to him, he will make you feel stupid for even trying to ask. Kinda mean, kinda tough love act. Participate and youll be fine.
Vigil is one of the best and challenging (in a good way) professors I had in my time at WSU. He wants you to grow and be the best social worker. W/ this class you will finish your capstone. I found this class easier than 4860. You only meet once a month and there are less installments for your capstone. You will know APA by the end of this class.
Not good with meeting individuals needs or being accommodating. Lacks professional/personal boundaries
Professor Vigil is incredibly knowledgeable in the social work field. He always took time to answer questions, both in class and on an individual basis. He can be a 'tough love' kind of guy, but I truly think it's in the best interest of students. He doesn't just hand out As, but if you can follow directions you'll succeed. He's been a great mentor
Vigil is a tough professor to have. But he wants his students to succeed and isn't malicious in any way. He will provide you feedback that might seem harsh, but in the long run it is there to help you with your progress and success.
one of the best professors I have had during my time at weber! so funny, personable and one who will share his experiences before expecting us to. The DSM-5 can be hard to follow but he did such an amazing job at explaining, some hard conversations but you learn to listen a lot better and respect others points of view. LOVED this class so much.
Terrible! Almost every class someone cries from belittlement, and classmates are always afraid of failing if things are not PERFECT! He is mean, and showboat's a lot! He will flip out in the front of the class at you but will be nice in a one-on-one. You do learn a from his courses, The family could be dying and he would not care.
Very engaging course. Vigil is phenomenal. I highly enjoyed learning about the DSM. The final project is long but very helpful in helping understand a diagnostic process with a patient.
He's a jerk, and he's proud of it. He's condescending, inflexible, has no respect for your time, and pretends to be an expert while reciting outdated knowledge. Unfortunately if you're in the social work program there's no way to avoid him. Put his classes first, don't bother asking for extra time, and start assignments early when you can.
Vigil doesn't deserve all of the negative reviews. He is a tough grader, especially on papers, but he's passionate about what he teaches. I will say, don't contact him outside of class, contact a classmate instead if you want in-depth help. He tend to respond in short messages. All in all, I look forward to taking more classes taught by him!
Professor Vigil was amazing! He made class fun and interesting. He was well organized and responded quickly. I reached out to him a couple of times outside of school hours and he was very responsive. I appreciate his help and guidance through the Social Work Program. His hard work and understanding doesn't go unnoticed!
This has been my favorite class at Weber State and it's definitely because of the way Professor Vigil teaches it. I learned so much and he gives great feedback. I found his sense of humor hilarious and that really made it a lot more comfortable to discuss heavy topics in class. I'm really looking forward to taking more classes from Professor Vigil!
Vigil can be a tough grader, especially when it comes to APA, but he's overall awesome and a great teacher. I've learned a lot from him. Contacting him outside of class is risky because he might sass you, but most of what you need to know is in the syllabus and he always says you can stay behind in class if you have any questions.
Overall, he is decent and makes the lectures interesting. But his grading is quite intimidating, very particular and he does not like to answer anything outside of class. He is in charge of a lot of SW classes so just get used to him and stay on his good side cause he can be the deciding factor for your SW career.
caring, works too hard, and has high expectations for students which many professionals are not all 3 at any point. He can be difficult and dramatic at the same time and takes you on a scavenger hunt through canvas. He can come across as disrespectful over email but I doubt he really is irl. everyone is lucky to have professor vigil as a professor
Vigil is in the middle of the amazing and bad reviews. He is very abrupt, doesn't like to be contacted thru email, and is very picky about APA. But I have become better at APA, filling out docs, and other practical application things. You have to take his courses to graduate, so look at the good, and know he probably likes you more than you think.
His classes are all just English classes. He only teaches APA and you don't learn much else. You have to take 4 classes with him and he's the only one that teaches them. He takes pride that his students don't like him. If you don't complain you'll go under the radar and he'll be fine with you.
busy work and paper work. redundant. write about all your classes over again. Capstone has unnecessary and pointless paragraphs. disappointing waste. spend 50+ hrs a week on school, burn yourself out and frustrate yourself and amount of knowledge gained does not add up in the end. could have just read a capstone. pointless and arbitrary.
You can't contact him outside of class. This class teaches you almost nothing about children and family welfare, all you learn in APA. He is biased, but at least he's open about it. I appreciated the helpful lectures, but he's mean. You won't get on his bad side if you don't chime up. Just stay low for the most part and be good on APA.
Vigil does not deserve all these negative reviews. He is the professor that I learned to respect, the one who pushed me to be better, and I feel he prepared me best for the role of social worker in the real world. He's grumpy sometimes but honestly best professor at weber. Sure, you do a lot of APA, but it pays off I promise.
I like the class, but vigil is a hard professor to work with.
classes about how to write a paper. Third or fourth case study you've written and copy and paste the entire code of ethics into a document in a certain format. Can't write about anything useful at all because the professor is crazy. students and professors wasting time talking negatively about him but not doing anything about it. Not funny
The teacher focused almost entirely on APA and barely taught the course material. Feedback was overly critical and unhelpful, and he was never accessible outside of class. I left feeling confused and unsupported, like I had to teach myself everything.
