He is a hard marker, but fair. Good teacher though, nice guy.
I liked the powerpoint - very clear lectures - tough exams - great project - use
Fair, nice guy. Talks too quiety, sit in the front of the class.
Very clear, nice guy, uses Powerpoint, and is always willing to help.
I liked him but he was kinda boring and made silly jokes.
so boring and very regimental
he is proud of himslef !!! hard tests, useless notes
talking about sex for 5 hours!?
Very good teacher. Very interesting. Goes beyond the book which is cool. Uses powerpoint, and is easy to understand. Stresses what is important for tests and gives bonus marks on tests. Worth while to take him. I've had him twice and totally recommend him
Very monotone, lectures are hard to sit through, he could deffinately spicy it up a bit. Not reccomended.
he is very monotone and talks about sex too much but there is just something about him!!!
The tests are not that hard, if everyone would just do their reading they'd be ok...and what's wrong with sex? how better to capture the attention of 20 year olds? anyways, there certainly is something about him...
cool class, i got to work at the mental hospital, took 12 pages of notes every day in a 3 hour class, tough and tricky tests, expect to do your work, not for the average bear
He helped me understand stats math. His classes are fun and his dry sense of humour is quite funny. Always tried to be at class. Really enjoyed learning from him.
He's a great teacher. I felt he deserved one score for hotness.
apparently unrequited preoccupation with sex...ogles...drones...extremely specific marker..ambiguous word game multiple choice...an excercise in logistics, not an education in psychology.
Great real life experiences, easy going, loves powerpoint notes, very detailed and through. Tests are not difficult providing you know your material. Guessing isn't a good idea.
aslong as u study and book and review ur notes ull do fine. some say hes boring, but his lectures are way more interesting then the book. so just go to class and honestly know the book like the back of ur hand and u can ACE it
LUMBERG!!!!! He looks like Lumberg from Office Space and he talks like him too. Yeah, uh, hey, if you could just get that m/c test done, that would be great, yeah. Infatuated with talking about sex and embarassing himself in front of the class
very monotonus voice. clear lesson plans. good power point presentations. fair exams.
good teacher overall, dull personality but tries his best. powerpoint is great if u can speed write! marks fair, only 1 paper.if u want to slack, take nite class-less labs.recommended.
Very good teacher. Taught me to write a proper Psychology manuscript that really helped me in a Langara Psych course, I was first, and I am thankful! Knows his voice is monotone, says so and tries his best to "keep you awake". Great stories! R
Interesting real-life stories, especially in abnormal psych. Despite trying trying to be funny, he's pretty arrogant and pompous, with a shred of humanity. Tests are moderate to easy. Goes a little fast with the notes. Not very approachable.Class is passable, but he is very picky with the one report
Well organized with powerpoint. Very boring but tries to be funny. If you read the text you should ace the multiple choice. you need to be explicit in the written to get good marks. Not bad but wouldn't take him again. too boring
sooo boring!! doesnt know how to teach if power point is working, easy tests
powerpoint and book are important for exam! research papaer will be easier than you expected important to follow form* and content.if you read a book and study notes in depth...you should be do fine..^^ i agree that a bit bored class~
He is really dry but he can bring in some really good material. Lots of notes. He uses powerpoint which makes things easy to read. If you are in his class speak up and have some fun with it. He allows it and it makes class a lot more fun.
I recommend Dr. Welch for anyone who is really interested in psychology, and doesn't take the class simply out of curiosity.
This guy is hot for a nerd.
bad teacher, very mono tone and hella boring, prepare to have a good sleep in his class.
SOOOO boring, so monotone, material very dry...what else is there to say...
dont take his course unless u r geek
Excellent teacher, very good powerpoint notes. You will get an A if you read the chapter, read his notes, and DOOOO the study guide, verrrry simple if you follow these steps. For and A on the paper just follow the APA Style and your good to go, he's very smart and knows what he's talking about! YAAA
Geek is chic!! A surprisingly funny guy. Yeah he's monotone, but if you listen you'll get to hear his dry wit/jokes. Very organized with his powerpoint presentations. Do what the person below said. Use the study guide and know all the terms-it's very straightforward in his classes.
Do not take this class! he's really lame and his jokes are not funny. He is the hardest marker i've ever had and you can't even understand him because he's totally monotone. Get ready to have a good sleep.
I don't know what people's problem with Welch is. 1) He's funny. 2) He's interesting. 3) He makes learning the material easy (PowerPoint!) 4) He is NOT a hard marker. Don't believe me? Take an English course! Welch is the best prof at the college IMHO.
He's okay.. I guess... I feel sorry when nobody laughs at his jokes, I think it harms him deeply emotionally. :( The poor man..
only powerpoints for his teaching his first test was all multiple choice, he expects pretty much word for word when you write the written part of the exam. what else is weird is that he MUST take back the MC questions before giving the written. something about looking back for answers ?=(
The Abnormal Psyc course I took with Dr. Welch was the most interesting one I took at Douglas in over a year. He's a very smart guy and people complaining he's boring probably don't have a real interest in Psyc. But if you do, I totally recommend his classes. Hard, but fair marker, and very helpful.
too many notes, his voice is just driving me sleepy
This teacher really needs a personality check & his interpersonal skills need work, not to mention his poor attitude. He talks down to students and is not helpful. Ya, his powerpoint is a good visual, but you need more than that to make a course interesting. I reccommend another teacher. (Anyone other than Wilson)
He knows his stuff. He's actually quite funny at times.
He is a good teacher, yes he can be a little monotone. His powerpoint is aways clear and easy to understand, but a little boring. He doesn't let you jot things down for long, so write quick. He jokes a lot, probably the same ones every term. Tests were fairly easy, paper was good(use APA and you'll be fine).Gets a kick on creating powerpoint pop-ups
He's the cutest little thing. He does get pretty excited about the power-point sounds. But his lectures are clear and interesting, his tests aren't easy but if you pay attention and read you'll do fine. Take his course you will get alot out of it!
I actually did poorly in this class because I took too many classes, but I still enjoyed his class. I think he was very helpful, understanding, and he did try to entertain the students. It was hilarious how he got excited over his little powerpoint sounds. Very nice instructor! A lot of notes though : (
I thought he was a great teacher, if you went to class and read the text, you'd do fine. He's a bit monotone, but always went over the main points that would be on his tests.
He is a nice teacher but his tests are hard. He is helpful and funny. I'd recommend him for this class.
Very organized and professional. he is also funny and interesting
great prof, if you read the text and pay attention during lectures, you will do good on the exams. very funny and interesting teacher i highly recommend to anyone interested in psych.
it is crucial to attend all classes! honestly if u go to class listen and take notes you'll do fine.
As long as you attend lectures you should be fine. Study for exams, the written questions are very randomly chosen. Not a bad class. Recommended if you don't mind some hard work.
Steven is a good guy. Lectures can be a bit boring until he gets to the case studies. Pay attention to what he focuses on in class for written exams. Very fair. He dresses very well, probably the best at school, and he always has neatly combed hair. What would Freud say?
he is alright not the worst or the best prof at dougie. He could be a bit more supportive to the students. A little anal retentive but maybe just his way. He gave no marks for attendance and then commented (complained more like) often about how often people cut class. Personally I wouldn't take him again.
Basically, you just have to memorize the text for this one. His stories are interesting, but he put me to sleep a couple of times.
all you have to do is read the text [more than once helps] and actually attend class and you'll pass no prob. who attends class without reading the text anyways? oh wait... i know who... oh and yah, he DOES talk down to students, cutting you off without really listening to you.

Snazzy dresser right out of the 90s. Loves his powerpoints so be sure to oohh and ahhh at the sound effects he puts on them. He is a tad anal and a hard marker.
He's a pretty good teacher, but does have a tendency to talk down to students. Make sure you attend class!
makes students speak up when responding but he is MONOTONE..makes u sleepy!! good ppt but only focus/expand on certain sections of the chp. 4 test (50ish mc + 10 mark written) and a group lab paper (APA). written mostly based on lecture and the rest on txt so must read.
cool guy for a geek.likes to stare at students. powerpoints are clear, and he tries to make them funny.would recommend him if you like rote memorization.
Dr. Welch doesn't talk down to students at all. He has an interesting sense of humour (albeit quite dry) which some might misinterpret as condescending. He has great notes so make sure you attend lecture! I enjoyed his lectures and I would definitely take him again.
What i like about Dr.Welch is that he like to give out bonus marks on the written portions of the exams. So make sure you put as much in as you can, and you'll be guaranteed to get 13 or even 14 out of 10, it's been a major grade booster for me, as i generally didn't do that well on the mc.
He's a good guy..but quite monotone..takes awhile to arrive at a point. Looking around, I saw many students half asleep. However, he's an honest marker.. and has fun with his powerpoints :)
Great teacher. His classes were very informative. I took him a while back. I don't understand why students always complain about boring instructors. They are there to lecture and not take you to the playground.
very clear lectures. attendance is not necessary to do well in the multiple choice portion of tests, but is a must for the written part of the exams (usually out of 10). on a side note, you'll find he is not afraid of long, awkward silences when waiting for someone to answer his questions. very amusing!
Although his monotone voice may put you to sleep, he does teach clearly. I consider him to be a good teacher. Class isn't necessary as long as you can get notes from someone. I do recommend reading the text book. On the written tests write as much as you can because he does give bonus marks. p.s. be sure to ooh and aww at his power points.
oh, dr. suave. he's a good prof and so long as you read the chapters you'll do fine for the tests. very clear. but he is sort of a stereotype as he likes to hold his glasses in his teeth and wave them around as he stands with one leg up on a chair (a la capt. morgan) wearing his silk shirts and slicked back hair. what a character!!! :)
Although people think he's a little boring, I think he's great. He has good clear notes, his tests are reasonable if you study and I think he's cute!
I hate him. He teaches 2 things in insane amount of detail pertaining to that weeks chapter. While taking notes, he moves from slide to slide and says too bad if you don't get it all. SOOOO egotistical!
His class is fun is students actually participate.I like how he tries to make us laugh at the end og the slides. He turns the slides fast because there is so much to cover, and everything is in the text.He expects more because it's a upper level class,BUT he is a VERY reasonable essay marker.GOOD teacher
He is great! Shares lots of interesting case studies through videos and his own stories. Tests are very straightforward. Work through the questions in the study guide and review them and you will do well. Guess what, this is college, you actually have to make an effort if you want a high grade. I don't know why some people are so surprised by that.
He is great! Would take more classes with him in the future! (and I am VERY critical of my profs)
a nice guy, reli not bad
Funny guy. Miss his classes.
Good prof, I just wish he would give us more time to finish our tests, I feel rushed, it would be nice to use the whole class. He makes the class interesting from all his work experience.
I found his class to be interesting, however he does lecture in a monotone voice which over time gets very boring! Covers way to much content per class, by the end your left your leaving class wondering what the hell did i just learn. I am a good student but in his class I just passed! I would not recommend him to anyone, unless your into boring!
He is a good teacher. Fair marker. U HAVE to attend the class if you want to get a good mark.Listen to him in class carefully because he gives you clues for the written part of the exam. I will definetly take a clss with him again!!
I was worried about this class because I'm not really interested in the content, but Dr. Welch made it bearable. Some of his assignments (the paper and presentation) were a bit daunting, but they go ok as long as you put in effort. Be sure to attend class as he doesn't provide powerpoints, but they follow the textbook really well if you do
Lectures are intense. Tests are based half on textbook and half on lecture. I got a C- in his abnormal psyc but that's because I skipped 70% of the lectures, the 15% paper and only studied the textbook. His conceitedness and monotone kills me, hence my low attendence. If you can stand those, the class is recommended.
steve is a great prof; tough + a little odd, but teaches the material very clearly. good sense of humour! he's approachable + always answered any extra questions i had. took psyc 1200 + 2341 with him. In 2341 there's not much room for thinking critically + questioning the material tho. the group papers suck unless you get lucky with coworkers.
Talks extremely quietly, heavy textbook use. Test questions are mostly from the text. In-class lectures are profusely dragging and boring.
terrible instructor, so serious, so difficult tests, inflexible. ...
Amazing teacher!!! The material is really interesting. Steven does talk quietly but I always sit in the front so it wasn't a problem. The paper is an easy A and if you study you'll get a good grade. This is NOT a class for slackers. This is the best class I've taken at Douglas.
I have taken 2 courses with Dr. Welch, intro 2 and abnormal psych, and I agree with other people that he is pretty boring, BUT Dr. Welch knows what he is teaching. He used to work at River View so he has real field experience and shares some stories. You will learn something from his classes regardless of whether you like him.
Great prof! Would recommend!
Tests are difficult. However, if you study hard, you will do great!
- I found he was using his powerpoints from past semesters of teaching the course. He hadn't updated them until we had noticed some errors or if he made funny comments such as "oh I haven't seen this happen in a while" meaning he hadn't looked at his slides since he last taught the class a year ago and was entertained by them.
Quite speaker. Monotonous. Assigned a group paper. Read the book & the notes and you will do well in tests. Skip a class and miss the fill in notes. You need the notes for the tests. It is a long class each week, but he doesn't teach stuff you do not need to know.
His classes were very interactive and enjoyable. Each lecture had fill-in-the-blank notes provided online which made lectures more enjoyable and forced you to pay attention, which I enjoyed. Tests were lecture and textbook based but very clear on the content. I believed I actually learned in the class and thoroughly enjoyed going to class.
I recommend you don't take Psychology 1200 with Steven because he either goes way to fast or way to slow through his lectures. Plus, his lectures don't compliment the textbook what so ever. He skipped over sections in his lecture due to time restriction, told us we need to learn it outside of class from the text, but still put in the test.
You will need your textbook, and you will need to read it cover to cover. Steven provides clear learning objectives for each exam that make studying easier. Reading the textbook and notes are not optional if you want to pass, over a quarter of the class failed the first exam. There's also a group paper, but he looks more at formatting than content.
Very monotone and too reliable with slides and Powerpoints, a hard-marker as well.
Steven is straightfoward, there's no gimmicks or weird things to learn. He teaches in a way that allows someone to get a good mark through pure studying. The majority of his tests are MC, and he only asks for around 30 minutes of homework a week. Solid prof, I strongly recommend.
dropped my gpa, worse prof ever do not take him unless you have too. tests are so odd, don't know what the right answer no matter how much you study either memorize the whole textbook or fail.
I don't recommend taking class with him. Lecture heavy, tough-marker, and very monotone (you'll be zZz-ing in his class.)
He's not a teacher you can expect jokes from, but what he does is teaches you what you need to know, provides the required material to study, and tests you. It's straightforward. If you're the type of person who learns best with that type of teaching method, this class is a great fit! Study the material, attend class, and you'll do well!
Very boring!!!!!!! all he does is read his powerpoint under his voice so you barely understand what he is saying and he is very monotone. the tests are really lengthy and weird. He gives you 1 minute per question on the test, so if the test is 90 questions long, you have 90 minutes to write it. He means well but not a good proff! humor is very dry.
bland lectures. Hard to follow with his lack of enthusiasm
I don't agree with everything he says, but he's a good professor and helps you learn the material. Bland, but not so much that you fall asleep, so I didn't mind. If you try hard, you get a good mark on his assignments, but he's a pretty tough marker when it comes to APA style. He wants you to use the text, but I didn't use it at all and got a B
Class was engaging and informative. Dr. Welch is knowledgable in his field. I personally didn't purchase the textbook but if you're a text book learner and an A+ go getter, you might want to purchase it. Multiple choice for all exams except for the final (3 long answer questions) which he chooses from a list given out at the start of class.
Dr Welch's lessons are straighforward. Student/teacher contract is fair; course outline is easy to follow; marking is also fair and transparent. learning objectives are OBVIOUS, so you can actually learn the material as well as elaborate on it. One group paper, usually. Rational marking scheme : each assignment/test is worth a fair value.
Steven is a great prof! He explains the material very well and is very articulate. He super organized, so you'll know exactly what to expect. There is a group project, make sure you're in a good group! Put the work in and you'll get a good mark.
He has a weird set up, talks to much regarding two things then you have to study the text book all on your own. i would take a different prof for this course GOOD LUCK
Steven is very clear on what he expects, if you follow his instructions, you will do well in this course. Most of the learning is textbook based, and within the lectures he talks in depth on only a few points. The class can be bland but he attempts to add humour and tries to interact with students to make the class more intriguing. Overall, average
The lectures seemed to feel very long because he has a very monotone voice. The course was interesting but it was hard to feel engaged because of how long and boring it was. Not a hard class and the exams are quiet simple.
He is very nice and reply to emails very fast. The class is hard, too much information at once. The book is useless and his lecture are intersting yet the exam is very tricky. Its a hard class.
Best prof i've had. Super clear on how you're graded and fully transparent. Super supportive and genuinely wants you to understand and learn the material. He's very knowledgeable and makes lectures interesting and humorous at times. Would take a class with him again without a doubt
Steve is a friendly man but holy this is snooze fest central. tests r online which is the best part of this class but he goes to the very very end of the 3 hour lecture even if the slides are finished. Hes a good fella but yappity yap yap
Knowledgeable and presents material in a clear, digestible way. Tries to make the class funny with some jokes, asks some short discussion questions or has little activities, which is nice. Straight-forward and chill class, I don't think it's boring, but maybe I just like psychology. Notes are easy with PowerPoint slides. Read the text book too tho
