As a person, he's quite charming. As an instructor, not so much! This class dealt mainly with writing papers, and writing papers isn't the strongest quality I have right now. If you are fairly confident in your skills as a writer you'll have no troubles what-so-ever.
He lectures mostly, but there is also a lot of class discussions. He loves what he does and it shows.
He is so hard. He sets really high standards that nobody can reach. You write a lot of papers but there pointless papers and he is never clear about what he wants out of them. I droped his class because he is so hard and I was failing but I was not the only one to do that.
He is okay as a teacher. Personally, he is pretty cool. He has grades on participation and has people work in groups alot. If you do not like working in groups very much you should not go with him.
[Intro2Fic] I enjoyed Werkmeister's class. It was a great time to just sit back and use your mind. (For a change). He doesn't often lecture, but he does try to guide discussions (good thing). I would take his class again. Just to hear more of his ideas. He's pretty funny too. Just make sure you're listening to his comments. I would take him again.
An excellent professor, his lectures and activities are extremely helpful and he always has wonderful anecdotes that help keep class lively and interesting.
He is a very difficult teacher. His papers are too advance for a comp 1 class. I withdrew from the class after i realized i was not going to pass and after about 75% of the class had dropped before me. He is very unclear about what he wants from his papers. I thought that he was a great guy but his style of teaching was not very easily understood
He is not very clear on what he wants in the 5 papers you must write. Criticizes way more then critics. Not very helpful. Talks down to students, grades to hard for a comp 1 class. Would not take him again. The only learning i did in that class was to pick my classes earlier.
Great teacher! Only down side is he likes to talk about stuff and sometimes gets off topic. Found his class easy to follow, and he is always letting you know what to be ready for well in advance. Would recomend this teacher to anyone.
I took English 215 (U.S. Latino/a Lit) from him online. Great class, great professor. By far the best online prof/class I've had (and I've taken several). He responds to all posts, answers emails in a timely fashion, and is clear with his expectations for assignments and papers. He is interesting, funny, and extremely helpful. Highly recommended.
He is an ok teacher. nothing big to complain about but nothing big to criticize about either. he has an odd sense of humor which you either like or don't. he does focus a great deal on rhetor when you write. a fun game to play in his class is count how many times he says "Right?" but overall he is a decent teacher just do the papers he assigns.
Key to doing well in his class is to show that you are willing to work hard. He loves when you visit him during his office hours. He likes to see the extra effort. Grades hard but it gets better after the first paper, make sure to DO the paper to the exact description of the assignment sheet. Go the extra mile and you will get the grade you deserve
An okay teacher. In a round-about way he teaches you the basics of writing a paper. He grades a little to easily for my taste, he didn't really prepare me for Comp II. Just follow the requirements and you will get an A. Take him for an easy A if you don't want to learn anything.
really awesome teacher. assigns a lot of interesting readings and you will write a lot of "journals" in response to the readings and a few papers. lectures can be boring but he also shares a number of interesting personal stories and has a great sense of humor. Very helpful if you need to meet with him outside of class. Overall an excellent teacher
I am taking the Intro to U.S./Latino literature class online right now. This professor hasn't graded anything in the last 2 1/2 months. I have absolutely NO idea how I'm doing in the class. DO NOT TAKE
Prof. Werkmeister never graded anything or returned emails (for 3 straight months). I took his U.S. Latino Lit online and it was horrible.
Werkmeister is a good professor, who is helpful and easy. People may say he is too easy but you get out of his class what you put in. He really challenges you to think, and leaves it on you to accept his challenge. He does tend to babble on boring personal stories, but the guy is funny, in a dorky way.
Very good teacher. He is extremely intelligent, and it is obvious he is a teacher because he loves to teach and be a part of the learning process. I am currently taking his Composition II class, and I am still learning new things with each paper I write on how to better my writing skills. Everything I wanted out of this class I received and more.
He's a good teacher. He discuses most of the class and he makes sure that you understand what is needed. He's really not boring coz he tries really hard to make lame jokes. I really loved his class. I recommend him.
Very rude! He talks about his family life way too much I would say sign up for another professor if at all possible you'll be happy you did!
Very hard to write papers for because the topic's are so broad. As long as you pass all of the papers & do the extra credit on the first Test then you can flunk the Final (at least get 10-20 answers right). I would only recommend him to the experienced or someone who has a dream to become a writer. He's very down to earth.
Werkmeister has been one of the best teachers I've taken in my college career. He presents the expectations of the course in a very clear way. He has a pretty great sense of humor and is willing to work with anyone. If you follow his guidelines, use his help, and work hard, you will do well in his class.
I personally thought that his papers were extremely broad and, at times, very hard to understand what was being asked. He does not give examples to the papers and does not give adequate time to complete them. He assigned 3 papers due between the second week of February and the second week of March. He is too strict on paper length as well.
Worst teacher ever! Very broad directions on papers and assignments.. and very strict on length of papers. He also assigned ridiculous amounts of work.He thinks hes funny but hes REALLY not.I would NOT recommend anyone to take his class!
I thought he was a very good professor. He is really smart. This is a literature class, so expect to read! As long as you did well in comp 2 and can write papers (follow the guidelines he sets) and prepare for the exams (he gives you a sheet you can write on!), You should do fine.
It is now one 1 before end of semester, paper 2,3 & 4 as well as 5-10 discussions & some other assingments have not been graded. He was good at responding to emails in the first month, now I have not gotten replies at all. If you have a question on an assignment good luck trying to get a response BEFORE the assignment is due.
I loved Professor Werkmeister's online Comp I class! I walked away a couple points shy of a 100% in his class. I do agree that he gives broad topics...but I enjoy that, and he wants his students to use their brain and run with his topics. Professor Werkmeister will give you what you put forth. Great teacher and I enrolled for Comp II with him!
I've taken two of this professor's classes. He is definitely my favorite English professor and has a great sense of humor. The feedback on my papers, etc. was always detailed and helpful.
I feel bad saying this because he is smart and really really funny and a good teacher but he just doesn't reply to emails after a while. He makes up excuses. If students cant use them why can he? but he is interested in what he teaches you can tell.
He was a good professor to take from online. I loved the novel he assigned. I will be taking Comp 2 with him in the fall.
WORST TEACHER EVER!!!! Takes forever to grade papers. Makes up excuses for why he doesn't grade papers timely. Takes points off papers just because you did too well on it. Directions for papers are very broad and confusing. Has a stupid rule that every paragraph has to be 3/4 of a page on papers, instead of being topical.
Took his Drama as Literature online class. Discussions are mandatory as well as 2-page papers every week. He was quite active on the discussion boards and was willing to help clarify information if we were confused about something. Expect to read about 40 pages a week and be willing to dive deeper into the text. The weekly notes help on tests.
If you follow the paper instructions and do the work, you'll do fine. The paper topics were just broad enough that I didn't feel chained. I enjoyed the Boo novel he assigned. He did get a bit behind in grading, but got caught up. Good sense of humor.
He's basically worthless but if you're just looking to get the credits I recommend him because the class is straight forward and easy. You have a few discussions a week but for the most part he leaves you alone, which is a lot better than the teacher I have now, who micromanages you. So take him if you just want to get a credit done
He's really laid back. He doesn't grade the papers too harshly and he's very willing to help you through each paper. He's positive and encouraging. A lot of the things we talked about in class were easy to relate to and interesting. When we go through a book, he thinks outside the box and encourages conversation. Great teacher and personality.
He's a great guy. horrible teacher. He's very funny and laid back but is very harsh in grading papers. he tends to look at all of the negatives in the paper with very little positive feedback. tough grader too! due to format error, my paper was a quarter of a page short and he gave me a straight zero without even looking at it.
I hate comp class but he was very fair and very clear. No surprises. I would recommend. I hated reading the book Beyond the Beautiful Forevers, hated the names in the book. I suppose it was an alright book IF you're into that stuff, which I am NOT!
If you ask for help he basically just states the obvious answer to your question and just rereads the notes and not give you true help. Which the notes are confusing and unclear. He laughs at himself a lot and makes it hard to focus. Not good at giving helpful feedback. He knows what he's talking about, just not good at teaching it.
Great teacher! I usually don't do that well in English classes but the Prof was very clear on what he expected. 4 papers the entire semester, pretty easy. The research paper is only 7 pages which is very short compared to other profs' classes. Easy grader compared to my high school english teachers. TAKE COMP 2 FROM HIM!
I feel like this class was a waste of my time, and was hard. He is a stickler for the page requirements. Great guy, just a terrible experience. All the small assignments are easy, but the papers will drain the life out of you. The research paper is alright, it was the paper I got my highest grade on.
Great guy and teacher. Effectively communicates expectations and deadlines, etc. It's not one of those classes were you just write papers, you're expected to write outlines, drafts, bibliography drafts and so on, seriously a TON of work. He's very flexible on deadlines though so If you communicate openly with him, he'll give you an extension.
Wermeister was actually a good teacher that really cares about each individual student. He is a smart guy and can tend to expect his students to just know what he is talking about at all times. I like writing so this class was an easy A for me, but if you struggle in writing he might not be a wise choice for a Comp II class. Overall liked him!
I thoroughly enjoyed his ENGL 121 online class. I felt like he was always really clear about assignments and pretty lenient on grading but does expect you to stick to guidelines. He is really good with giving feedback, even when you don't ask for it. He gave each individual advice for research papers which is pretty cool.
This class was awesome. He's a bit goofy, but he always explains if we need help, and is a really smart guy. I totally want to take Comp 2 from him
He want you to constantly be doing a lot of busy work involving always getting online to take stupid 5 point quizzes 3-4 times a week. Papers were uninteresting and he is not an exciting speaker.
First few weeks of class you have at least 3 online quizzes a week, which aren't hard; remember to do them. The quizzes saved my grade. Every paper was graded so hard, with no positive criticism. If I did one little thing wrong, automatic D. Good luck. Would've switched if I knew before. Awful class and so glad I'm done with English.
Absolutely Hilarious. A LOT OF BUSY WORK, but its not to difficult, He's a pretty easy grader. I enjoyed his class a lot. I took Brit Lit from him, and we had good discussion cuz I had a fairly good background in the subject already. If you take online, watch the quizzes for joke answers. It will make you smile if you catch it
I took his Comp II course online during this past summer. He assigns a lot of discussion posts and quizzes through D2L. The subject of the papers that he assigns may/may not be of interest to some people. I personally did not find it interesting. However, he is determined to help you succeed. He gives good feedback and participates in discussion.
Professor Werkmeister is an average professor. However, when grading papers or giving feedback on papers he tends to be biased in subjects that he is not familiar with.
Overall a great teacher. He gives a bit of homework, but it isn't too hard.
I really did not like Professor Werkmeister at all. He is definitely one of those professors who try too hard to "level" with their students by trying to crack jokes every 3 seconds. Not only was he pretty annoying, the way he graded papers was heinous. I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone.
This professor is a very hard grader on the paper's you turn into him. Almost never gives you positive feedback, and if you do one little thing wrong he will only focus on that and nothing else. Puts assignments up at random times, and even the day of sometimes with no warning. Would not recommend this professor would have switched before hand.
Outside of teaching, he seems like a very friendly man. But he has taken away my love of writing by assigning vague subjects to create structured papers. His grading is harsh and his assignments dont give enough time to complete. Even the writing center is no help, they tell me they dont know how to. The topics are negative and unspecific.
Great professor. Not sure where all of the negative feedback is coming from. He's an incredibly easy grader in my opinion. If you need help with an assignment, just ASK him for help! He's hilarious and genuine. Also, yes, you will have to write papers (four total); it's a COMPOSITION class. Not sure why people are complaining about this.
This guy is really interesting, his lectures are anything but dull. I received an A on almost every paper, and didn't put in a lot of effort! I would recommend him for your comp 1 class, just to get through it with a good grade and to learn a bit in the process.
He was my poorest professor I ever had. He never gave out extra credits because they are not a necessity. He is a tough-grader on grammar( commas, periods..). He never gave us enough time to finish assignments.
I usually hate English classes, so I was dreading Comp I, but by the end of the semester, I actually wished it could keep going. Steve has a sort of offbeat sense of humor that makes his lectures accessible and relatable. My advice: do the readings, practice commas, ask questions, and get friendly with the writing center.
He's nice and willing to help. There's 4 papers that aren't too hard. He checks your notebook weekly for a grade, but you can use it on the final. LOTS of reading, but reading quizzes are super easy. If you miss class, he takes points off your notebook grade. Lectures are boring and he laughs at his own jokes but easy A.
I'd have a beer with him outside of the classroom but I won't be taking his comp 2 class... Attendance may not be "mandatory" but your notebook will be graded down if you miss a class period. ( even if you copy in the notes from the day you missed before he grades the notebooks) .
I got a 68 on 2 papers. One had a lot of spelling errors and made no sense. The other was just a bit heavy on the quotes otherwise pretty good. If I've already improved on my mistakes, there's nothing else I can do to get a better grade. It was the same story on summaries. He seems to be determined to give me a fixed grade no matter my effort.
All around just a teacher that I would avoid.
He's a very sarcastic professor that you want to avoid. He's not a professor who is understanding of his students. I wouldn't suggest him.
He was a really good teacher! You cant miss his class , though. Id take him again if I could!
Spends most of class time speaking in useless anecdotes. Doesn't provide edited copy. I'm 90% sure most of his comments on work are just copy+pasted into Canvas. Clearly tries to insert his political biases into grading, and I'm on the left as well. He's not boring, but if you plan to learn anything, or need to write in future classes, avoid.
I loved taking this professor! I took him for ENGL 121 and ENGL 122 and did not regret it. He makes sure you know the subject and gives you great feedback on the papers. There are a couple of discussions and paragraphs per week and gives you lots of time to write your paper. He helped me understand grammar, punctuation, and MLA better also.
I never had enough time to do any assignments he gave out, his grading is unnecessarily harsh, and the assignments, in general, are repetitive, boring, and just not worth the effort.
Entry level writing course, and you will write about 1000 words per week on top of quizzes assignments and lectures. No respect for your time. One week we had 7 different assignments due.
Awful. He claims that attendance is graded on your weekly assignments, but when you dont show up he starts to dock points off your essays. He rambles aimlessly during lectures about nothing. The amount of writing was okay, I found it manageable. I could hardly stand his lectures, hes also a really tough grader so make sure everything is perfect.
This class wasn't neccessarily hard but he grades way too hard for an English 1 class. Out of the 4 papers in the class my average grade was a 65% and and on each paper he showed what the top and average grade was and I had the top grade in the class on every paper. Most people averaged a 40-50% on papers.
Literally could not be in his class for 2 weeks. We read through our textbook for "optional" assignments but no point in having them, his lectures make you want to pull teeth they're so boring. He will ramble on the entire class, lost my attention in every class. Would not take him again unless absolutely necessary.
My favorite class this semester. Professor really cares about his students and was always willing to provide extra support on all assignments. He has revamped his course in a way that is entertaining and relaxed while still stressing the importance of good writing techniques. Definitely recommend.
Be aware of him
there's so much negative things about this class that I really want to say but there's a word limit so let me be brief. The most lamest class in the JCCC building, makes you feel like skipping this class with no guilt, and overall just does a terrible job explaining certain things. He really needs to change his teaching abilities ASAP.
Bad teaching style and very harsh on grading papers. I feel like for an intro level comp class this its way too harsh when we're just learning how to properly write a paper. Would not take again. Also very lecture heavy but not about the content, usually rambling about something that isn't related to the class content.
During the lectures he just rambles on and on about non sense and it is really hard to follow where he is trying to go. He grades very harshly and does not care on helping. You don't peer edit you just read other students papers and comment on them every paper (which takes forever), missing class is frowned upon and he will start ducting from grade
Seems like a lovely person to know outside of class but wastes our class time going on tangents about his life that has nothing to do with writing. Forced to sit for an hour listening to his life story or your grade plummets.
Very harsh grader, when he finally gets around to actually doing it. Took a month 1/2 after papers were submitted to grade them every time. Makes it hard to learn from your mistakes when grades are so delayed. Clear expectations but high standards. Overall willing to help and very accessible via email. Leaves generic feedback on most assignments.
Steven is so awesome, he such an amazing professor i would highly recommend
Wasn't bad, but he would constantly go off on tangents. He also was random with grouping for peer edits. I was consistently placed with people who didn't offer help.
I swear to god in all of my years i have never had a less competent professor. Constantly talking about being hungover and talks about nothing and everything at the same time. I have not learned a single thing, or have been given knowledge. Yaps for 2 hours to plummet my grade with no explanation. Also attendance is needed even if he says it doesnt
I took comp 2 from this professor and he graded discussions on time within a day or so but when it came to papers it was over a month before any of the papers were graded. On the papers he was a harsh grader and counted off on the littlest things.
Lectures lacked energy, and although he may be passionate about writing and english, it was never apparent in his teaching, Attending lectures was required but once you do go, it is so insanely hard to pay attention to what he has to say. Constantly lost track of what he was even trying to pro
Do not take this "professor's" class, waste of money. S. Werkmeister took half the semester to return our first paper due to "switching offices" and then had the nerve to give half credit to late submissions from students. Bet this guy got his full check while not doing any real work. He hates quotes, so barely read the sources and pick 4 lines.
DO NOT TAKE. By far the worst professor I've had at JCCC. He is a tough grader, like really tough. He is a very slow grader, he didn't grade our second paper until the fourth was due. How are you supposed to implement his feedback if it isn't even graded in a timely manner. Worst class, I would not take anything from this teacher again.
Worst teacher I've probably ever had. He is such a hard grader for no reason, most of my papers were Bs and even a C. He takes months to grade so you can't even use his feedback. If you love struggling and dealing with BS from teachers he's perfect for you. Highly recommend you stay away from this professor if you can even call him that.
Forgot about our class for a month did not grade anything tell the last week and bad overall.
Not only is he a tough grader but his lectures are some of the most boring I have ever listened to. He gets off track so easily which made me have to learn everything outside of class. I cannot stress enough to not ever take this professor. His vibe makes you want to skip every class due to the fact his attitude towards teaching is so boring.
be prepared to write a lot of essays and take tons of quizzes over readings
He yaps about nothing for the entire class period. Most of the students leave after the quiz is done. Very slow grader.i would take ANY other teacher.
Honestly, many of these ratings seem overly exaggerated. Steve is probably the most caring professor I have had. Although he does take a while to grade, and his lectures are a little lackluster, the care he has for his students is unmatched. If you are struggling, just talk to him; he will genuinely help you 10/10 times.
