One of the best professors out there! He's new and he's young but it seems like he's been teaching for 20 years. Very into pop culture and current events and brings them along with his ideas about life and society into the classroom all the time. It's impossible to fall asleep in class. If you can take freshman English with him, DO IT!

Dr. Wexler's class was great. I took his freshman comp class this semester and feel like it was a great introduction to college writing. He's kinda hyper but that is really useful when you come to class and are really tired. It just showed how passionate he was about teaching and writing. I highly recommend his class.
Professor Wexler is the best! He's super energetic and passionate about the subject which makes class FUN & entertaining. Plus, you really do learn a lot - his class is enlightening. You will LOVE his class!!
Great class! Great instructor. Literature and film is a subject I never thought I'd enjoy, but I loved it. Very great class overall!
Knows his stuff and makes you think!
Professor Wexler is a fantastic teacher and a good man. It seems rare to find the two in the same person nowadays, but I am thankful to have had him.
He is intellectual and stimulating. He loves to get his students engaging instead of him lecture while the students stare at walls. He is a passionate thinker and cares. I recommend him to any English Major.
It was a fun class and he kept things interesting. I took this class for fun and enjoyed myself. The people in the class make or break it as far as i am concerned. We didnt have a very talkative group which meant that it was the same few people talking over and over. Do the readings for sure!
This course involved alot of class discussion. He is very hyper and doesn't like when people do not talk. He requires you to make posts to WEBCT weekly and maintain a blog which the difference between the 2 became vague.. he does not give ANY grades until your final grade.. I didn't read much and thought i would get a D... got a B+ .. worth it!
Awesome teacher, made class super fun. Watched movies almost every day and you never really had to read any of the books unless it was your presentation book. Barely tried and pulled a B. Final paper is a breeze. RECOMMENDED
good teacher! had interesting class discussions and really gave lots of insight. I didnt know much before his class but I learned a lot after. Not too much reading but you do have to webposts...no big deal though!! take him!
He makes this class challenging but he does it with his own style. I like the fact that open discussion was allowed in class and the blogs are good because then we could research the subjects and post what we've found. If you take his class, make sure your schedule is light because the readings could become an issue if your schedule is jam packed.
Highly recommended teacher. Very innovative, wants you to expand your ideas on theories discussed in class. You HAVE to read the text or you'll be really lost. The people in the front ususally take the spotlight so if u want attention, don't sit in the back. No tests, just discussion. Final paper is 10-15pgs long. Show up, do the readings, thats it
This class is DEFINITELY hard! Theory and readings are VERY dense. I learned very little because it was so confusing. He goes off on tangents, and he is a very interesting person. Blog was interesting, I liked it! A few 250-500 pg assignments and final paper 2,500 words. Not a bad class, just hard and dense, I got a B+, but didn't learn much.
AMAZING. he brings an innovative teaching style and combines it with stimulating discussions. i absolutely loved his class - he's brilliant!
you'll learn a lot if you listen. And you'll probably pass if you just show up. it's a win win situation. this class was AMAZING
There are alot of readings but if you keep up u will do good. i got a C cuz i kept everything last min. do the work and u will get a better grade. some response papers, webct posts weekly and a blog and a essay at the end. hes knowledgeable and smart in the material he teaches.
Dr. Wexler is GREAT! He is energetic and eager to explore the material. His classes involve engaging discussions which are enjoyable. He is always open to new ideas.
has favorites - hyper - can have strange, childish reactions - if you take him once, take him again because it's always the same material. thinks a lot of himself, and not too interested in teaching - don't understand his popularity
This guy is super sexy!!! And he's hilarious!! Not to mention he's a great teacher! He's the WHOLE package!
He is one sexy professor that constantly digresses and talks to himself (it's funny, though). An exremely easy class if you participate and actually do the readings. He requires four small papers, weekly blog entries and a final paper. Falls short in precisely clarifying theories; I suppose that's what the readings are for, right?
As a professor, Wexler is not very hard. He has low expectations and I wish he would have expected more. I mean its a 400 level class! If you want an easy A take this class. As a person, he is someone who believes in his students and wants to see them do well. He will offer encouragment and advice if you ever need anything.
This guy is hilarious! He gives very lively and animated lectures that are more like conversations. He obviously cares about every student's success in understanding the material and welcomes questions. He walks around during class, probably 50/50 to keep everyone on their toes and because he seems to be restless. Probably more 40/60 for restless.
Prof. Wexler is the nicest guy you'll ever meet. He takes critical theory very seriously and enjoys finding modern examples to compare with the ancient philosophies. Apart from being very cute, he tends to go off topic quite a bit. As a student you have to be asseritive and lead him back to the task at hand. I would recommend his class.
One of the best professors and classes I've ever taken. Encourages discussion and really tries to relate to his students and current issues. He also integrates an online aspect of the class, which is one of the most intriguing parts about his teaching style. Plus, he's sexy. Period.
Super Hot professor and easy class. Sometimes I just come to class to see him. Assignments are kick back but important. Did i say he's HOT too. Oh yeah I did! Just weekly blogs, and some presentations
He's an easy A, but you likely won't actually learn much.
His class was always fun to attend, but he really phones in the whole "professor" role. Little-no response on assignments. I received an 'A', but am not sure why. The textbook is incredibly dense, and is essentially where you learn everything if you want to actually learn anything. Not as hot as he thinks he is.
Professor Wexler's specialty is rhetorical theory and he is very passionate about applying it to both course work and real life academia. The people who do not enjoy his teaching method most likely don't enjoy interacting with people in general. If you like sharing ideas and interacting with your classmates then you will enjoy Professor Wexler.
Prof Wexler is an outstanding educator
awesome professor!!!
Ok so Professor Wexler is an awesome guy... He is willing to help anyone out... No exams... A few papers and it's not that bad... There's some group work, but in the end it's all about your papers... Class is always interesting and topics are random, but that makes class even more enjoyable... Chill teacher, chill class... Easy A in the end...
He's a cool guy who is real smart, but if you get lost in the materials of the class, you're screwed! don't bother asking him for help he'll just stare at you, be realy confused, speak to you in this "how can you not get this" attitude, and overall just not understand how its possible that you're not getting the somewhat-complicated concepts.
I see this guy has a lot of good ratings.. I'm sure he's written some of these -_- He's a good teacher but it's nearly impossible to ace his class. I did all the readings, all the hw, scored a 95% on the paper and still don't know how i got a B. The final was based on interpreting some dude saying "IM ON DRUGS" (scene from Almost Famous)
Whoever says he is an easy "A" is probably a student who worked very hard. I admit that I am a slacker at time, and I got a "B" I know someone who says he got a "C," so I wouldn't say he is an easy "A" However, I think he is an AMAZING teacher, and I will retake him again (of course trying harder) Highly recommended!
I've had Wexler a few times, and I think he is just awesome. He is a fair grader, and sometimes I feel he is a very easy grader. If you do what you are expected to do, and relate different aspects of pop-culture to different theories, then you will do fine (he loves theories). I would take him again if I could.
Most confusing lectures I have ever listened to. Jumps all over the place and is difficult to approach for help or clarification. Also his handwriting is impossible to read. All things considered it makes coming to class extremely frustrating
If you're the type of student that needs specific directions for every assignment, this class will frustrate you. I didn't mind because it gave me more freedom and less pressure. There is a midterm, final, group presentation, and weekly blog posts. This may sound like too much work, but at least he's a fairly easy grader.
best teacher ever
Okay, so Steven Wexler is a nice guy, but his class has no form. It is 90% discussion and 10% lecture. If you like your class to have structure, and if you like the professor to give some sort of information than this class is NOT for you!
Great if you like theory and rhetoric...which I don't but did take it as UGE and enjoyed him and the class. He is super nice, engaging, easy grader, fun, youthful class. Great break from heavier requirements and overall, enjoyable.
Fun class to take. It's mostly discussion. The readings he assigns are tedious but it's not necessary to read the entire thing. Skimming the articles/chapters is enough. There is a midterm (take-home), final, weekly moodle posts and another assignment. All very easy as he is an easy grader. It was a nice break in a semester of hard classes.
If you are a freshman, this is a dream professor. No structure/direction, just a cool prof and an easy A. If you are a serious aspiring teacher, this class is disappointing. Gained nothing but the credit for taking it. I wish I would have something to show for it.
Wexler was great - he encourages discussion even tho many ppl in class don't participate. He likes when his students bounce their ideas off of him and he bounces his off of them. He has a very new style of teaching which is not the boring, old kind. I did learn a lot & hope to have him in the future :)
If you want to slide through class and learn absolutely nothing, chose Steven Wexler! I always check out my profs on the Internet though and everyone should check out Prof. Wexler before meeting him. Interesting.
There is a lot of writing in his class and the books assigned are thorough to the course. Some assignments are more difficult than others but he is approachable and helpful. Def take this must have Prof!
Prof Wexler is passionate about what he teaches and he wants you to succeed in his class. He genuinely cares that you understand the material with class discussions (laidback) that allow all to express views. Basically, listen to instruction with assignments and you will do very well. I learned a lot and would take another class with him.
Awesome Professor! This guy knows what he's doing and he's great at it too. Super helpful, super clear, always there for you, and he's not too bad on the eyes either. Seriously, his class is actually fun to go to. I took him in the afternoon and it felt like I was learning rather than taking a class on a week night. Take him if you get the chance!
Class consist of participation, updating blog, a midterm paper, group presentation, and a final. I didn't participate at all (except for presentation), but speaking in class is very important since there is a lot of pop culture theory. Really not bad, make sure you at least skim thru the readings, those are discussed every class meeting.
Wexler is a super genius who loves teaching! There isn't enough time in the class to impart all he wants to convey. He has a way of making us students thirst for knowledge! There is no way anyone can comprehend all that is discussed. That might make some students uncomfortable. I for one appreciate being challenged for once.
If you want to sit through extended tangents with no purpose or clear point, be encouraged not to read the assigned readings, watch random film clips, YouTube videos, and music clips for no apparent reason, and be patronized as though he is apologizing for teaching the course, then this is the man for you! He doodles on the board instead of writing
It's not a pop culture class. It's a philosophy class. It's obvious that he loves philosophy and loves to lecture about it, even when we have no idea what he's talking about. He's a really cool guy when he's in a good mood. Don't ever leave his class early without telling him first. Don't miss more than like two classes.
DISCLAIMER: IF you do not like philosophy, don't take this class because that's essentially what it is. Has NOTHING to do with pop culture. Seemed relatively easy at first, only graded on a group presentation, midterm paper, and final. BUT DONT BE FOOLED, it is way too difficult.
I signed up for the class, thinking we would discuss Lady Gaga, the Kardashians, and other trite subjects. It turns out Popular Culture is a very sophisticated branch of Cultural Studies. This class draws from many academic disciplines to make us understand how politicians and corporations control every aspect of our life. Best college class taken.
Great teacher, talk about concepts like Marxism, etc than who's who of the elite social world. Lectures are a little over your head, but if you ask what he means he'll explain(even if you do it a lot). TONS of reading assignments. Only grades are group project, midterm & final paper. Your readings musts show thru all of these! Cheat sheet on final
He's incredibly knowledgeable in critical theory, philosophy, and cultural studies. He's passionate and fosters an environment that makes students feel able to share their diverse perspectives. Every class was a blast.
Wexler is an awesome guy and he's really passionate about what he teaches. If you want to actually learn something useful, take him.
He's always talking about all these philosophies but never really relates it back to pop culture. Actually, he never really finishes any idea that he starts. Every now and then, he does have moments where he makes sense, but overall he really does not. He's a nice guy, but not really a great professor.
He likes students to talk, so be prepared to speak up--even when he lectures. Topics range from reality tv to video games to James Bond to rap. It's an easy A if you read and show up.
Although it says pop culture he focuses more on theories and theorists. Reading is essential because he likes students to participate and discuss the readings in class. He's pretty funny and the lectures are interesting as well.
The class is not about Pop Culture like MTV and E! News but instead about how "popular culture" is changed with different social and cultural ideas throughout time. Trust me, much more interesting than MTV and talking about Kardashians. Professor is hilarious and class was always fun.
Profs. Wexler is a great lecturer. He is really passionate about his teaching and always try to let everyone participate in his class. He also listen to his students and try to help them as possible. Defiantly would recommend talking him
This class has nothing to do with pop culture. He tries to tie it to pop culture, but is not successful in doing so. Overall, it is an interesting class. There is a group project, a midterm essay, and a final ( for us it was just two essays that we had to write at home). Pretty laid back class.
His class was based on a group project, a midterm paper and a final paper. They were both take home. He is very excited about teaching and he lets everyone participate. The readings are extremely confusing but he goes over them in class. The subject is a little bit boring and confusing but he makes it easy and understandable!!
This class has literally nothing to do with pop culture. He thinks he is a philosopher so get ready to read about Carol Marx and post-modernism. Final is worth 40%, midterm paper worth 35% and group project worth 20%. Pretty easy tp get an A, just do what he asks. Wouldn't recommend if you think you will be learning about Apple and Kim Kardashian.
Professor Wexler's Pop Culture class was amazing. The topics and subjects we discuss are very modern. There was only 3-6 essays and one group project, no test. His lectures are open, he likes to hear our opinions.
Prof Wexler is an average professor. He is friendly and likes to interact with the class a lot and definitely likes to hear out his students, but I didn't really understand what I needed to know form his lectures in order to prepare myself for the class. I felt like I was learning more about philosophy than how pop culture influences our world.
Wexler was amazing. You can really cut down on your reading if you know how to identify conclusions, reasons, and causes, and map out arguments. Reference the lecture material correctly and support your ideas adequately. I had no issues with him. He was always clear and personable, especially when you take advantage of his expertise in the field.
Not recommended. His lectures are long, boring, and take forever to get to the point. Acts like the readings are essential when they really aren't. The class is essentially basic literary criticism (feminist and Marxist theory, etc.) applied to pop culture, and it made me feel like i was back in AP High School English.
Professor Wexler is a great professor. If you're having trouble understanding something, he would take the time to explain it to you. He really cares about his students. His lectures are long but he's funny. There's a group project, one midterm, and a final.
Professor Wexler is a good lecturer. Sometimes thinks hes a philosopher, but also sweet. Gives good feedback. Attendance is not mandatory, but participation is important. 1 group project, super easy. 1 Midterm paper, 6 pages. 1 final, two 4-page essays. Seems like a lot, but its all broken down on the essay rubric. Good professor overall!
Professor Wexler is brilliant, who cares about his students and his subject. I guess some people would like easy quizzes on light readings, but that is not real education. Take Dr. Wexler if you want to be challenged and learn new ways of looking at popular culture.
This professor is fun and witty and sarcastic and everything you want in a cutely good professor. Believe me.
I took the face-to-face English 205 with Prof. Wexler when my room-mate took an online class with another professor, and I could not more pleased. This prof takes teaching seriously. He made us think deeply and write with a lot of heart in it. It was fun, too. He is a cute dude in a professorial way.
By far the best professor I've had at CSUN. His lectures are fun and the class discussions can get very interesting. There are no right or wrong answers in the class and you're able to challenge other people's views including the professors. You won't regret taking this course.
Graded on 3 assignments: midterm (6 page essay), group project, and final (6 page essay). Some reading assignments are challenging, but they made the graded assignments easier to do. If you are majoring in other social sciences, you'll find that the theorists and theoretical concepts discussed overlap into other courses. Fun and interesting class.
Steven is a very informative professor and has some fascinating material to lecture about. The class is fairly easy with some papers and a group presentation.
Great guy. No judgement. And no "one right answer" attitude. Thinks he can play a guitar, but cannot bench press. 2 papers that looks extremely intimidating, but fear not, ask questions and know what he wants. Group project regarding a pop cultural element, easy stuff. Interact with him during lectures, it'll be worth it at the end (A)
He seems like a relaxed and down to earth kind of guy which is a good characteristic but he is way too relaxed. He doesn't care to know students by names neither does he take into account participation so those who participate receive no credits His classes will add so little to the knowledge of his students as reading assignments are not mandatory
Prof. Wexler is great! This class deals with more of a philosophical look at Pop Culture. He does PowerPoint lectures for every class about the readings/ theories we were assigned. Both the midterm and final were take-home essays and were easy. There is also an easy group project and an ethnography about us observing others. Highly recommended!
Wexler is pretty cool. He's not a hard grader and he's very relaxed about the class. A little too relaxed for my taste but he means well. His lectures are interesting, even if they are a bit outdated for pop culture. Nonetheless, take him if you're trying to learn a great deal whilst getting an easy grade.
Wexler is a great professor, he is encouraging and lectures are interesting. He allows for student creativity, as well as promotes growth in his students. 10/10 would take again. Readings every week, but they're interesting.
Very easy grader. There is one group project and two essays. There's no reason not to get an A in this class because it is literally pop culture. If you're not into pop culture DO NOT take this class.
Professor Wexler is a pretty good professor. This class will actually make you think and get creative which I loved. It was a bit channeling for me but I managed with passing with a B. Just read the assignments and you'll do just fine TRUST ME!
Very disorganized. Not very helpful. The class says "Pop culture" but it's actually about politics of culture. Lots of philosophical readings that are confusing. Can't even see grade til very end. Two papers (midterm & final) that hold most of your grade. If you like philosophy stuff & can teach yourself then you'll be happy as a lark.
I really enjoyed this class. The material that was provided was super interesting and incorporated a bit of philosophy which I personally enjoyed. There is two papers (a midterm and a final) and weekly reflections due each week. Professor Wexler was very quick with his responses when I needed help and I would overall recommend taking this class!
He's alright for online-probably better in person. Gave us something to read weekly with a powerpoint and notes he has about the topics covered. His descriptions were usually written in ways that I found hard to understand, but I think I got the gist. Weekly discussion posts. Two essays. Not a harsh grader at all. Books he covered were enjoyable.
Professor Wexler's knowledge of literature and film is exemplary. His lectures are dense with critical theory and historical context. Student's must be prepared to work hard, dig deep and show a thorough understanding of material throughout the semester. Avail yourself of office hours and you will not be disappointed.
Easy grader & a very understanding professor; you can tell he's really passionate about what he teaches and that he cares about his students. There were 2 papers, weekly reflections where you share your thoughts, no exams. Quite a bit of reading and stuff to watch, but you'll be fine just skimming and watching clips.
I was an exchange student at CSUN and professor Wexler was outstandingly helpful. He always gave great feedback and had very interesting topics to discuss. I really enjoyed the work and can say this was one of my favorite classes taken in college.
Professor Wexler is a great teacher. He made his online class fun, educational, and thought provoking. While some of the topics get into deep thought, he set up the boards and feedback well to keep everything moving. You will write in this class, a fair amount, but online learning also required more writing than being live in the classroom.
Professor Wexler is great. Homework consist of weekly discussions on readings which at times may be intimidating and a bit difficult to understand but he provides slides and notes regarding the topic which help a lot. No zoom meetings but you can set up an office hours time with him. Also replies to emails really fast!
Professor Wexler was great! Very clear on the assignments each week. One discussion post due by Saturday night. Two papers due throughout the semester. All of the discussion grading is done in one letter grade at the end of the semester, but the papers are graded very quickly. I really enjoyed this class and found it interesting, take it!
I took this class online thinking I would learn about pop culture and how it's grown over the years. Instead, it focuses more on the philosophy of pop culture. I found it difficult because I am horrible at things like that. Weekly discussions which at times were difficult, but doable. Two essays, very essay. I would take it again!
The class definitely required some reading that was not always easy to understand, but the weekly assignments were based off your best ability to answer the question being asked. He didn't grade on perfection. No class meetings but office hours are available if you needed help. Weekly posts and 2 papers. I would take him again.
Wexler makes his class theory based, which can be a little difficult when writing your discussion posts. His lecture slides don't explain the dense theories well, but just do your best and you will be fine. He was an pretty easy/fair grader and his class is not super time consuming. If you have questions, he is very approachable!
This class was a blessing! I added this class late and he waved a few discussions. Discussions are weekly due on Saturday. There are two papers midterm and final. The professor provides power points, notes, and I read the text book. The class is a theory class, you will discuss theories in the discussions and the essays.
Prof. Wexler is great for anyone who is intimated by Theory. He provides lots of slides and notes to help you understand the readings. He also responds to emails quickly. Can't recommend enough! Credit is primarily weekly discussions, the midterm essay and final essay.
His modules are very organized. He was very lenient when grading. There was only discussions, midterm paper, and a final paper due which was great. I emailed him at 2 a.m. not expecting a response and I had received one 30 minutes later with an answer to my question. I enjoyed the extra readings he provided.
extremely forgiving grader and super communicative about expectations for assignments and what you did right or wrong and why you got the grade you did. it'd be hard to ever do poorly in his class. he's also fun to be in class with. i struggle with and usually despise theory and he made it palatable.
I'll be honest, even though I got an A, I couldn't tell you what the course is about. Even though attendance isn't mandatory, I would go because he really unpacks the density of this class and Professor Wexler makes the discussions engaging. He's an easier grader and just wants you to know that you understand the material. Textbooks are online.
I have so much respect for Dr. Wexler. I took English 312, and it was an extremely easy class. He really knows his stuff. He is passionate about the subject. He is also a funny guy, which is a bonus. I would definitely take him again if I have the opportunity. The class consists of a midterm, a final essay, a group project, and weekly posts.
Took online over the summer. Very similar to 436 in terms of content presented but with more relevance to modern-day pop culture than theory. Graded on a midterm, final, and 7 discussion posts. If you are able to implement theory easily into essays, this class will not be hard. Professor Wexler is the best.
At first I was very intimidated by this class and the professor, but by the end of the course I really felt like I had learned so much. Wexler is an engaging lecture and just an passionate, energetic person in general. But definitely be ready for a challenge. There are also only three main graded assignments so effort really matters.
He is a great professor. His assignments consist of discussion posts and there is a fair amount of reading. He does assign 3 papers, but they are not hard. He is very open minded to whatever topic you chose to write on. I high recommend this professor to everyone that needs to take this class.
When you get a professor who is passionate about the subject matter, their enthusiasm is contagious. It makes all the difference. Dr. Wesler is one of the greats. Although he is laid back, he will not tolerate any nonsense. Do the work **it's not a lot of pressure but get it done on time and be thorough and you will have a great class
Professor Wexler's ENG313 class is engaging and thought-provoking. The workload is manageable, with weekly discussions, a midterm, and a final paper. The material can be challenging but rewarding, and the professor is responsive and helpful. I found unstuckstudy and the provided readings to be great study aids.
Very well organized professor. The assignments are fun to learn. Assigns weekly discussions posts. Provides pretty clear study guides for the midterm and final essays. Very nice and caring instructor. I have learned well from him by taking this class and also in ENGL 436. He is amazing. Totally recommend him.
Fun class. Awesome lectures. Easy class discussions. Prof. Wexler is an amazing instructor as he is clear with what is expected from students and provides fair and helpful feedback towards the larger assignments which are the midterm and final essays. Take him.
Online class taken over summer. There's three reflections, one biography, and one critical essay. They can be time-consuming, but the instructions are clear and simple. Professor Wexler usually responds to emails/messages within minutes! Many of the readings are available in Canvas, but be prepared to go to external sources for some. Great course!
it is a good class
Great professor! Please do the assigned readings! Lectures are heavy but he makes them entertaining. He does like when class participates in the Lectures. Group project was fairly easy and straightforward. Would take again
