Really nice professor. Really helpful if you have a problem. Seems like exams are a little tough. LOTS of material covered. Gives notes online.
Super nice guy. Really tough course if you aren't good at memorizing, but really enjoyable class anyway. And he's just so darn cute.
An awesome prof - interesting, dynamic, funny and (as someone already said)just darn cute. The course has a lot of material but he explains things well and posted notes online which helps. The test wasn't too hard but had some tricky questions.
Great Prof. NOtes are on line and diagrams are great. He keeps you awake and has a little "quirky" jokes to liven up the class. He's really helpful during and after class and genuinely seems like he wants the class to do well. A great class if you like cell mechanisms!
This guy is awesome! The course is more on the difficult side (if you have a hard time memorizing) but he makes it so interesting! He's hilarious and just a really nice guy! Out of all the prof's i've had during 3 years at the university, this guy is my absolute favourite by a landslide!
He's got some interesting comments sometimes during class, but if you're not into the whole cell processes and such, this is definately not a course you'd enjoy. The tests aren't that hard. You just have to study/not hate the class, but there is a LOT of material.
FANTASTIC! this professor is great. the university and students are lucky to have him. i think anyone that takes this class will enjoy it if you've got an interest at all in the cell and cell mechanisms
Best prof Ive had! He makes excellent use of powerpoint, a skill not all profs have. Brings in modern day applications. Makes off colour jokes that I just laughed at him for. Incredibly enthusiastic. Take this course!
Exams do not reflect lectures. He trys to trick you...he enjoys a nice bell curve. The memorization of facts is not knowledge.
Knows what he is doing, knows what he is teaching. Can answer your questions, and if he doesn't know the answer he'll say so and figure it out for you by the next class. Tests are bit hardcore, but thats just the curriculum.

This prof is great, very funny and enthusiastic. Everyday he comes to class prepared, egar and energized.. He knows his course material very well, with highly organized notes and with a touch sense of humour, I think this class was the only class i don't dread going into in the mornings. Thanks to him..
The material is very overwhelming! Especially if you are in 3 or 4 other courses. Just tons of stuff!! Major memory dump after exams. He is alright. Most students thought he was great but I have had better profs. Best prof in sciences though, thats for sure. Wish the final wasnt accumulative. Lots of info per class. Tests arnt easy.Lots of details
I've been in university for a longtime, and Prof. Whyard is definately one of the best
Whyard is by far my favourite teacher so far. He's crazy funny and makes the class much easier as far as material. I have a friend who took the class in the second semester and I was crazy surprised at the detail she had to memorize. If you take this class be sure to take it with Whyard.
I love Dr. Whyard! He is THE BEST prof ever! He must be hipatitis positive because he's infected with terminal COOLNESS! yeah!
Really great guy, lots of enthiusiam, hilarious and ready to help students. Lots of information in the class which he can't help of course but having the final as cumulative is crrrrazy. Teacher himself though is awesome. I cant imagine this course with another prof.
REALLY GREAT PROFESSOR! Really enthusiastic about the material. Very clear about what you do and do not need to know. ALOT of information that you do need to know. He's just so cute and makes funny jokes that aren't funny but you laugh cause he's funny... I recommend taking this class with Whyard! He's pretty much awesome.
extremely helpful prof..one of the best, if not the best prof ive had at the u of m...doent drown u with material to memorize and has fair exams...just a cool person in general and makes class enjoyable
SUPER proff! Tells you what you need to know and what you dont. He explains things well and is a funny guy! Goes off on tangents sometimes but its fun!
Great prof, very funny and kept my attention in every lecture. Has very thorough notes and most examination material is in them. Emphasizes important topics, but important to know very miniscule details for exams. Very approachable; would show up early to class to chat with students.
Best proff ever!!! so funny and always willing to help. very approachable the nicest guy ever. just made everything so easy and interesting. BEST prof and best class :)
One of the best profs I have ever had. Always understandable and able to answer questions clearly. As long as you study carefully for exams you'll love him.
great prof!!! His lectures were interesting....and his notes really good :) I'm definetly taking other classes with him :)
Awesome class. His lectures are engaging and informative. He emphasizes what's gonna be on the exam and all, but do study the details for the exam. I would definitely take another class offered by him if any.
Awesome Prof!
Greatest prof ever!
Great professor, great man... better friend. A shining example of humanity.
Best prof ever. Loves his job. Exams are very fair and are even easier if you attend the lectures. Too bad the lecture hall is so big because he would do wonders for a small class. Wish he taught every one of my courses
Fantastic prof! Informative and easy-to-understand explanations, and has a refreshing passion for teaching a class well! Great sense of humour as well! Exams are fair, but make sure to know your details for the midterms.
Funniest prof ever!! Extremely clear and exams are all based on things he said in class. No tricks with him very straight forward and extremely fair marker. Loved him and his class!! Highly recommend taking any class with him!
Don't get the textbook. Studied strictly from the notes without any difficulty. Course covers quite a bit of content, but definitely reasonable. Absolutely hilarious prof especially whenever he shows a youtube video. Highly reccommeded!!
Truly a wonderful professor! Easy to understand, adds in humour. I wish all profs were like Dr. Whyard!! He makes learning the material enjoyable. No need for the textbook, know your facts from the notes and you will do very well in this course. Exams are comprehensive but very fair. I highly recommend taking cell bio with Dr. Whyard!
AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME PROF. I was so fortunate enough to have him as my prof. :)
Very entertaining. Increased my interest in the material even though it was very detailed info. Answers questions well and posts practice questions similar to what will be on the exams.
Very good professor. Used humor frequently throughout lectures to maintain the attention of the class. Descriptions and notes were very clear and interesting. Never looked at the text, just went to class and read the notes.
Best teacher I've had yet. If you can take cell bio with him do it! Very funny, will help you with anything. Talks pretty fast, lots of material to cover, I videoed lectures which really helped to hear his explanations again while studying. GREAT prof.
One of the best professors I have had at the university. He uses humor to make his lectures interesting. Also, there is no need to purchase a textbook. Attend class and write on his posted lectures and that is all the material you need to study. He will however test on details so read questions carefully on exams.
He's a not bad lecturer, but his exam are brutal. a, b, c, a&b, a b &c for every question. He tricks you into thinking understanding the concepts is good enough. All he wants is memorization of little unimportant facts. First exam isn't bad, 2nd is ridiculously hard, and the final? Good luck.
VERY hard midterms. There's a TON of content, and you have to know every tiny detail as it could be examined on. Exams consist of a lot of trick questions and sometimes require an understand far beyond what a strong understanding of the lecture notes provide.
AWESOME professor. Excellent lecturer and answers all e-mails fairly quickly. His tests really sort out who understands what's happening and who just memorized his slides. Textbook will just confuse you (and some of his content is newer/different from the text). Makes cell bio more interesting than I could have imagined. A+ very achievable.
Whyard is an excellent professor who is very knowledgeable, and makes his lectures interesting and dynamic with a sharp sense of humour. His exams intensely test your memorization of details as well as understanding of the relations between components. Relatively easy A, difficult A+.
BEST prof I've ever had! TOUGH course, content overload, excellent explanations, soo funny, answered every email...HOWEVER he won't if it is a lazy question and you can find the answers in the notes. Class is a MUST,explanations are testable. He emphasizes key points you need to know for exam.Do NOT waste your money buying the text...never used it!
He is probably the nicest professor at the u of m. He teaches with so much enthusiasm. His jokes are the funniest ever. He loves what he does and you can feel that wherever you are sitted in the class. The textbook is not required at all, i bought it and opened it just once. Tons of information to know but the exams are fair.
Dr. Steve is the best proff at the u of m. Always willing to help to his students, but his exams are hard must study his notes very well.
Dr. Whyard is the most outstanding professor I have seen. His notes are incredibly organized, his expectations clear and his lecture move at a good pace. He is the best professor I've had so far because he makes the material enjoyable! He may be the devil when it comes to tests but you'll be surprised how much extra work you're willing to put in.
One of the best professors I've had so far. He makes his lectures interesting, fun and useful for the future courses. He'll make you work hard for the grade you want, but he'll also be very fare in terms of grading.
One of the best professors I had at university. Dr Whyard always has a positive attitude and is very helpful outside of class. He keeps the class engaged while lecturing! Exams are fair as long as you memorize and understand his notes! I miss your jokes!
Fantastic prof! The course itself is not easy but not hard either. It is important to go to class to do well.
One of the best biology professors at UofM. Funny, cares about students, and holds attention during lectures. Clear, and concise. Goes above and beyond to help students understand what they are going to be tested on. Provides summaries and key points along with useful hints. Only tests what is stated in notes. Answer questions in class well.
His lectures were clear and concise. He often makes little funny comments during class time, despite his extra comments he still manages to finish on time. Exam question were tricky but still fair. I recommend doing the end of the lecture questions on his power points to excel in the class. Attend class his explanation helps a lot.
Dr. Whyard is by far the best prof at the U of M! He honestly wants you to do well in the course, and this support is very obvious and prominent in his teaching. His notes are very clear, and they are given to you ahead of time. He's quirky funny, and holds your attention in class with it very well. No textbook required.
Dr. Steve is the best professor in the Biological Department at the U of M. He is very helpful and I really enjoyed being in every class I have taken with him. Highly recommended taking all biology classes if you can.
Dr. Whyard is the best prof I've ever had in university. He made me discover my true potential.
By far the BEST professor at u of m. When he says pay attention to detail, he means it! The material is tough,He is very fair, and on exams where most of the class got the question wrong he will post why it is the correct answer and show you in the notes where the answer is. He is also very funny and you can tell he loves his job!
extremely hilarious in lectures which makes lectures seem so much shorter. His tests can be tricky with lots of All of the above or two of the above, etc. tests only on lecture notes. Tests aren't too bad as long as you study hard for them. Definitely would take another class with him again!! Would recommend to go to class for further clarity
Dr. Whyard was an exceptional professor. Although the course was content heavy and the class was huge, he never stopped teaching. He wants his students to succeed and he prepares them with excellent practice questions before the exams. You need to work through the details, but his dad jokes make going to class well worth it.
Steve is a hilarious professor, and his humour adds to the quality of the lecture. There is a lot of material, but most concepts are extensions of one another, so it isn't like you're trying to memorize random facts. MC midterms and a MC/SA final, all of which were fair. An A+ is achievable if you put in moderate work.
Great professor! He cares about each individual student and is very passionate about his work. He is hilarious and has a lot of cheesy jokes on his subject. Tests are all very fair. Notes were clear and easy to follow! Definitely take this course with him if you can!
Prof is hilarious, and really wants everyone to do well in the course. Instead of memorizing little details from all over the place, he has ideas interconnect with each other so you actually remember it better. Attendance is important, as his explanations help a lot. The final (MC & some SA) is harder than his midterms, so make sure you study!!
Dr. Whyard is hilarious. The course material is tough but Dr. Whyard's noted are extremely clear and easy to follow. The tests can be a little tricky but they're definietly fair. An A is achievable as long as you put in the effort (do his end of lecture questions and his practice MC questions).
His explanations are very good and he is funny, adding humors to boring concepts. He always makes an effort to provide us with practice questions specific to each lectures. Understand and memorize concepts, do practice questions and you are ready for the exam. You do need to work hard, his exam questions are twisted to check your understanding.
Without a doubt one of the best profs at the U of M. The material can be difficult and seem overwhelming at times, but at the end of lecture he'll break down what students should really take away from the lecture overall. Always finishes lecture on time (or early) and will have you laughing quite often; makes showing up to lecture worth it.
Lectures were well prepared and well explained! He adds jokes, which makes the lectures less boring. If you need a cell bio credit, take it with him! Overall very good prof and interesting lectures
He is very clear on what will and will not be tested. He replies to emails quickly and posts general answers to pre-exam questions. He posts review questions, exam practice questions with answers and end of lecture review points to know. He is funny and is really nice to student with questions! Great prof.
By far in my top list of professors. Funny, caring and professional. Truly there for students and will be there for you to succeed. Attendence heavily recommended as he does amazing job explaining, so well that you just review for exam. Notes are clear and well presented. A gem of a professor. Want an A or A+, he is your guy.
Dr. Whyard is fantastic. I don't know what else to say. He is smart and passionate. He cares about students and is honest and candid. Doesn't treat you like he is above you or make you feel like you are at arms length. Class if fair, material is relevant.
He is probably one of the best profs I have ever had. I took this course to complete my minor (I only took it because it didn't have a lab). I am SO glad i took thins course! He made his notes/class interesting, and was extremely helpful after class, and totally open to help students understand things that weren't clear from them! Highly recommend!
Probably one of my favourite profs. Makes class interesting by using cool examples for different concepts. His notes can be hard to follow, but in-class he explains everything very clearly. He is also extremely understanding and caring; recognizes the difficulty of being a student.
One of the best professors I've had. Don't have to buy the textbook and he tells you that because he provides everything that will be tested on to a T. Very funny, loves to joke around making lectures enjoyable. Very approachable and likes to get to know students. He made the course enjoyable. Highly recommend taking a course with him!
Very good prof. Enhances the lectures with the use of humour.
I highly recommend taking 2520 with Dr. Whyard. He is honestly one of the greatest professors I've had so far in undergrad. A sufficient and hilarious lecturer that outlines what you need to know for his exams. What's also nice about him is that he shares questions that students ask him via email. Truly a caring and passionate guy.
Amazing prof. Whyard wants everyone to get an A+. Don't glaze over examples, he uses them on exams, but he will warn you. Before the (cumulative) final he gives a very valuable review class where he gives an outline of the important concepts and how in depth to know them. Doesn't ask you to memorize useless details like most biology profs.
Dr. Whyard is hands down the best prof Ive ever had. He made a biology class very interesting and easy to learn. Hes very detailed on what will be in the midterms/ exam and he replies fast when you email him.
He is very genuine, wants students to succeed, posts many practice questions, is very approachable, gives clear explanations. I enjoyed the class, except that I wasn't a big fan of exam questions like: Indigo is: a. blue, b. turquoise, c. green, d. a and c, e. b and c. But it forced me to think critically and be better at taking tests ;)
One of the best teachers I have ever had. Makes difficult concepts clear with a lot of examples and different diagrams. There is a lot of material and lectures can be heavy but his style of teaching makes it a lot better. Hilarious and friendly. Exam questions can be tricky but he gives a very detailed outline of what kind of things will be asked
genuinely a very hard class don't take it unless you really need to. only three tests
Genuinely the best prof I've ever had. Material may be difficult for some people (for those who don't study) but he explained them extremely well with interesting examples. Many students (those who put time to study) walked out with A/A+ . Very approachable, nice, respectful and intelligent prof. Don't hesitate to take Dr. Whyard in fall.
My favourite prof so far. He makes a potentially dry class interesting and funny. He gives clear instructions on what to study for the tests. Gives good "what you should know" at the end of each lecture. Really enjoyed this class
All time favourite prof! Great sense of humor! Fantastic course, all lot of people didn't think so but I loved it!
Love coming to Dr. Whyards lectures. If you do the work and attend class you will pass. Gives great feedback and is entertaining during lectures.
Great prof, very good at presenting tedious material. His speaks with a lot of emphasis which is really helpful - as opposed to some profs who will just speed right through the lecture leaving you scrambling! Definitely take a class with him if you have the option
Steve Whyard is a great prof!! Wow! He's hilarious and his lectures are very engaging. There is a LOT of info to process in this course, and it is test heavy (2 midterms 25% each, 1 final 50%). However, he does make it very clear what you need to know and what is just extra info. ALWAYS GO TO CLASS ON FRIDAYS - he always gives away exam hints ;)
Amazing prof! Only 2 midterms and a final which really sucks. Tests on the most miniscule details possible but overall super interesting class
Dr Steve is hilarious. I loved his lectures. all his powerpoints are online so there was no need to actually go to class but I still went just to listen to his lectures. the mans got jokes. he provides all info required for testing and his exams are very fair and straight forward. the class material was also interesting most of the time
This is a prof that makes you genuinely interested in coming to class. He is hilarious, concise, fair grader and CLEARLY tells you what he needs you to know for exams. He gives you ample practice questions and revision for the exam/midterm. He is an easy-A teacher for any student who is willing to study hard because he tells you everything to know.
Best professor I've had. He makes lectures really interesting, enjoyable, and easy to understand. Can't recommend him enough.
Really bad test questions with all of the above or two of these answers are correct, kinda lazy test writing. Still easy enough of you study. Very boring material I fall asleep every class.
Fantastic and hilarious teacher, very outgoing and dynamic. Lectures are material heavy but he makes cell bio really interesting! He's approachable to ask questions and very thorough with his notes. Definitely cracks some good jokes in class. Really brings the course to life by connecting it with real world science and research in his lab.
one of the best profs ive had in university. hes hilarious, engaging, caring, and super passionate about the material and that students to well. this is a very heavy content course and i really struggled with understanding the large amount of content for each midterm but his enthusiasm and organization of the course let me finish with an A+ !!
Dr. Whyard was the most caring prof I have ever had. Super accommodating for SAS students and makes lectures fly by. Does give a lot of "a, b and c" options on exams but its worth it. Would highly recommend!
He is straightforward and speaks in a very explicit manner. What is taught is what is on the test. He is so nice and easy to talk to. Very entertaining. He gives lots of practice for upcoming midterms/tests. Out of all the prof in UofM it seems he really wants to see people succeed. Whyard makes the course is made easy for you, not complicated
Dr. Whyard is the best professor in the whole department. Hands down! He really wants people to do well and is a fantastic teacher, researcher and public speaker. Dont hesitate to take cell bio or any class with him! Worth it 110%
Whyard is amazing! Had his class from 4-5:15pm, and usually that late in the school day would have me dozing in lecture, but not his! Keeps his students entertained the whole class. Content is not difficult to understand, but do not underestimate the amount of time you have to put into studying for the exam for there are lots of details to remember
Made my late class enjoyable by cracking jokes, maybe one of the best profs I've ever had. Very clear on what will be tested. There was a lot but he gives a study guide that I highly recommend following. Mastering assignments, practice exams, and lecture notes are all you need.
very funny and easy to talk to, he taught first half of the course and I enjoyed every second of it. His exam were really easy and fair
Such a funny & genuine guy. Going to class was not a chore with Whyard.
The course has a lot of content, but Dr. Whyard explains everything really well. Don't fall behind, and make sure you fully understand concepts and you'll do fine. Textbook is not necessary, I used it to supplement notes
He is an amazing prof. He knows exactly what he is teaching and keeps you interested with his hilarious jokes during class. You just need to read and understand his notes for tests and exams Attendance isnt a must but it is recommended Tries to boost his students score with a two part midterm and exam im taking cell bio with him. great guy.
This man is amazing. All testable material is included in his slideshows, so there isn't a need to go to class but he makes class fun, so for the most part it's worth it to go anyways. Textbook not needed at all, gave great feedback on every test. With online learning, he allowed a few days where the test could be written. Amazing prof!
He is such an amazing lecturer, that use of the textbook is not necessary. The material can be a bit heavy, but he is happy to answer questions about it. He was also compassionate towards his students. The tests were open-book and non-cumulative, which takes a lot of stress off.
Our 5 tests were open online for about 3 days (1 hour per test). Very caring professor. The best 4/5 tests are for marks so you can finish the class early if you get an A+ with the first 4 tests. If you've taken biochem, it's an easy A+
Best prof I have ever had.
Wow, this is the most amazing professor I have met in my 2 years span, he is so caring and makes class funny as cell bio can get harder for 50 mins lecture. He makes notes easy and tests were a bit challenging but having prepared well you will get a better grade. Worth waiting for him to get him as your professor. Sure take him again.
He cares about students very clear and straightforward lectures. He even records them for later use by students. He's a gem just take his class.
Dr. Whyard is a gem! Due to the COVID situation, he readjusted his whole grading scheme so that we could succeed. He gave us 5 tests (no final exam even!) and dropped our lowest grade. He is so caring and compassionate, I definitely would recommend taking this class (or any) with him!
Dr. Whyard was an absolutely amazing prof. He really cares about his students and what he teaches. Pretty easy class, just learn the slides and you'll be fine.
What a nice guy! Seriously, if you ever get the chance, take a course with Dr. Whyard. The marking scheme was fair and accounted for the novelties of COVID-19. Dr. Whyard is passionate about what he teaches which makes it easier to learn and pay attention to. Study the note and go to lectures, youll be golden.
Dr whyard is most amazing entertaining prof i have ever seen in university . He is such knowledgable and passionate of his work and makes easier for students not only to grasp the material in class by making it more humurous . just go to class understand the notes and pay attentionin class. Easy to get A in his class. He really cares for student
Professor Whyard's lectures are fun to attend, due to his sense of humour and overall easygoing character. All of his testable material was within the lectures and lecture slides, and he also gives out practice questions to help further your knowledge of the content. He's very considerate, and open to just chatting. Great professor all around!
The best prof I have ever had. He is incredibly flexible. He would give us a couple of days to take the test! Also in total, we took 5 tests (non-cumulative) and he took your top 4 as each test was worth 25%. If you were happy with 4 of your tests, the 5th was optional! He also provided practice questions and other additional materials!
Easily one of the best profs I have ever had. He really does try his best to make the content interesting even when certain lectures were super heavy. Such a great guy.
I was quite skeptical about the reviews here but when I finally attended his lecture, I'm officially convinced that he's one of the BEST prof here. His lectures are hilarious, which help retains info very well. The way he talks isn't sharp nor loud. It's quite pleasing. Better sign up early though because space fills up fast.
Hands down one of the best professors I have had. Lectures are not at all mandatory, but you would want to attend because his lectures are so entertaining. The only down side is that he teaches only half of the semester. Can't wait to take cell biology with him!
Fantastic teacher. Was super funny and accommodating of the pandemic. Provided practice questions and slides that summarized the main ideas of each lecture. It was clear he enjoys teaching and wanted students to do well. If you put in the work you should do well. I cannot say enough good things about him, best prof I have had in university.
Dr. Whyard is an awesome prof. He's very caring and funny. Makes lectures interesting, he's relatable, and very knowledgeable. Take bio with him if you can!!
One of my fave profs! His lectures were great and kept you intrigued the whole time. Have a good run down of what to study for tests and exams. Super sweet!
An absolute dream of a professor. Incredibly charming, funny, and engaging. He is very clear as to what type of content will be on tests, and plenty of practice material is provided. He knows his stuff inside and out, but as a result, he can tend to go a little fast. Cell Bio isn't necessarily easy, but Whyard makes it a little easier!
Steve is a real gem. Not only does he actively try to make his lectures engaging and funny, but he genuinely cares about his students and will help in any way he can by providing extra practice material and questions to practice. He is one prof I wouldn't mind going out of my way to have classes with.
He was amazing all around. PERIODDDDDDDDD. The classes I had with him were the least stressful out of all my classes, which is like a breath of fresh air after being used to living in polluted areas. If you have the opportunity to take his class GO FOR IT. I would take all my classes with him if I could.
Really nice guy. The course content is very dry and not too fascinating but prof Steven makes it better. Generous mark breakdown and it is clear that he cares about his students
He is so funny and caring. 3 quizzes, 4 tests, but one test is dropped. Don't have to do all 4 if you're happy with grade. Open book tests while its been online. Its not a super easy course, but if you study the lecture material well and understand it well, you can do good.
This is the most intellectually engaging class I've ever taken at this university. If you love molecular/ developmental biology, I highly recommend this class to you.
