Woods is awesome. The class is work, tough essay topics, but fair grading. Watch movie classics on the big screen for class, meet once a week. Woods used blackboard, told funny stories, related to students, got us thinking, caused us to see film in a new way. Totally worth the time! Awesome teacher, wish I could take from him again...made an A.
Great instructor, interesting class, definitely recommended
honors american pop culture class is freakin awesome! very fun
Interesting teacher. Never posts grades. But, is a fun class: whatch movies, analize Manson, the simpsons, and music. The class is okay, but I would not want to take it again.
Fun and interesting class on Native American Cultures. Took the class to learn more about my heritage and other tribes heritage as well. Pretty easy class and very interesting. He is a great teacher as well and very articulate. He likes food nights too!
does not post grades so you never know what you have in the class. interesting assignments. be creative and you will do well
NEVER posts grades. does not give good comments on papers. not exactly clear about what he wants on a paper.would not take again. i had no idea my grade until the end of class even tho i ended up making an A. he says all this stuff at the beginning that you are going to do but then he only gets through half of the schedule. BUT the course books wer
i've taken all of his Native American Studies classes and i wish there was more to take. he is a really good teacher. makes the classes interesting. lots of work but fair.
Class was pretty cool. Woods makes you think about pop culture in ways I never thought of. Mixes msic, TV, film, advertising with philosophy, sociology, politics. Definitely need to keepu p with reading. Exams easy enough. Based on reading. Portfolio fun to do but I should of talked with him about how to do what he wanted better. Cool prof
native american spiritualities was one of the coolest classes i've taken at TCC. he is very respectful of the traditions covered. it helps that he actually lives what he teaches. he is a stompdance leader, a sundancer and catholic. exams are easy maybe too easy but he seems more interested in class discussion
I took Mr. Woods pop culture class and it was pretty easy. He is a super nice guy and will get you thinking about things. He will also allow you to have some say so in what the class will study.
Native American Spirituality was a fun and very informative class! He definetly knows his stuff, very smart individual! He interacts with the class and answers ANY questions you have! His tests are very easy, but he is mostly concerned with class participation and lecture. Mr. Wood ROCKs!!
great guy
Hollywood's America is the best online class I've ever taken maybe best class ever. Woods brings it like crazy. The online discussions are totally awesome! The way he thinks can change your mind about things. I'll never watch movies the same way. I wish he taught more online.
Lit drama film turned out to be one of my favorite classes. The stories assigned were really interesting not at all what I expected. The films were great. Stuff that youwould never see anywhere but Woods's class. He is a great teacher and he is pretty laid back. Do the reading and participate in discussions online and in class. No tests just
Very well educated, knows his business very well but was very disorganized. He went out of town for 2 weeks in the middle of summer semester & left us w/a sub who had never taught the class b4.It was a nightmare. The textbook is horrible & nearly impossible to understand.GOOD LUCK, in this class YOU WILL NEED IT!STAY on top of your group discusions
NEVER posts grades, is unclear on assignments, will make you feel stupid just because he can. relates the class to interesting topics, but doesn't cover the actual material properly. when emailed a simple question he ANALYZES everything you wrote to twist it into making you look ridiculous instead of giving you a straight answer. waste of time.
This class was wicked cool! Woods really makes you think about stuff younormally take for granted. Lots of reading to keep up with but closterman book is off the hook. Myspace assignment is cool. Nice prof funclass
I alwyas thought philosophy would be to far over my head but Steven used films like the matrix and minority report and groundhog day to provide examples. He even used the simpsons. All readings are online and he uses audio files and games to make it all more understandabel. Very cool. Wish he taught more philosophy classes. check it out.
one of the best classes I ever had! Uses film as examples. audio files are very helpful, even with british guys accent. Woods is very passionate about it all.
Hollywood's America changed my life and so has this Professor. I have never met a more articulate and intelligent person. I have never been challenged to think in this manner especially where films are concerned. Would recommend this class to everyone I know.
Avoid this guy at all costs. The professor needs to understand this is JUST a humanities course, not a Core requirement for a masters course. He is overly anal, condescending and his methods and syllabus are not clear at all. If you need a humanities requirement choose someone else.
I found Mr. Woods?s class very interesting. If you have questions you can always e-mail him. He will ask you to watch certain movies. The important thing is take notes and study his powerpoints you will do well on his test. All his tests are on blackboard. He has you to do a few discussion board activities and some online activities.
the most helpful professor i ever had online, or in class. gotta think but he walks you through each step. very understanding, challenging but fair. if you just want a credit go take someone else. take this class if you want to learn and enjoy it. awesome!
native american philsophy was one of the best classes i ever took. Woods is a great teacher.
Best online class I've taken. Best class i've taken!
The most intelligent professor i've had a tcc. Will enroll in his ethics class or pop culture class next smester.
Really good teacher, really into philosophy, but i just didn't like the class. If your into philosophy, take this class you will love it, but if you don't like it, i don't reccommed this class. It was really boring, but easy class tho. Its a really good class, it really makes you think, but i didn't enjoy it.
AWESOME teacher!! Extremely inspiring! This class has changed my life! He is very helpful and easy to understand. Best teacher I've had at TCC ever!!! Looking into taking more of his classes... You rock Stephen!!! =)
Mr. Woods is really nice and wants you to do well; very intelligent. However, I took his online class and don't know if I recommend it online. It was hard to understand what exactly he wanted sometimes; but does try to help you out as much as he can. Communication was lacking somewhat this semester.
Very good instructor and knows his stuff. I took online class and it was hard to follow at times however if you try you can make it through it. lots of movies to watch. on test have your book ready YOU WILL NEED IT. Pay attention to quotes in movies several on each test. Overall good class and I would take him again!
I took this class online during the summer and it was pretty easy. The syllabus is a little unclear and the book is only needed for a couple of test questions. Good class...totally enjoyed the movies and a nice way to spend the summer!
A nice guy... But such a boring class. Does nothing but talk all class.. Watch pointless movies.. Sorry I took the class
I took his Hollywood's America class last summer, online. I loved it. I am not a movie buff and I still enjoyed the class very much. I did discover that it was hard to find some of the older movies to rent, mainly because blockbuster and Hollywood video only carried one copy (if any) of each. Lots of graded discussion boards but great teacher!!
I am finishing up taking the Hollywood's America class online. I wouldn't recommend it if you don't have a lot of time because it takes up a lot of your time. Also, some of his directions aren't clear, and grading is really SLOW, so if you expect to know your grade a few days after you submit something, you WILL not get it with this teacher.
I took his Hollywood class online. The assignments are fun but are very time-consuming and at times difficult. The agenda does allow much flexibility with your schedule, though. He is hard to understand (but is very nice and helpful if you have questions) and is very slow at grading, which can be frustrating at times. Text is MANDATORY for tests!
I took the Hollywood's America class thinking it would be a fun way to do my humanities gen ed class, I was wrong. You watch perverse movies and then when you wrote your profile for it he takes FOREVER to grade them. So you never know if you're doing things right. My history class was easier than this one.
I love this class. Prof. Woods encourages us to think for ourselves, instead of just taking his word for things. I like that he lectures so much because there is so much information to cover, and he seems to know so much about the subject. Anyone with an interest in Philosophy will benefit from this course. I highly recommend this course.
Steven Woods is perhaps the most intelligent instructor on campus and, even knowing this, he does not talk down to his students. He makes the material in the class interesting and fun and encourages individual thought. Great teacher, would take over and over again for sure!
Steven is a great professor. I learned a lot, and although I decided to change my major from philosophy to international business, I'm glad I took this course. Few complaints-- class was cancelled often and without our knowledge sometimes, and he doesn't grade things immediately. But if you show an interest, he's much more invested in the class.
I took Hollywood's America as an online class. Although you get to watch movies, this is not an easy class. There is a lot of discussion board participation required. That being said, this is a pretty flexible class. You get to pick what movies you watch. If you do the work you will make a good grade.
Took Hollywood's America online and also agree it is not an easy class. The assignments are not particularly difficult just very time consuming. The is a large emphasis placed on discussion board participation and at times felt the grading of the assignments were a bit harder than they should of been. Nice professors and good class.
I took Hollywood America online and this class was harder than I expected. Not sure I understood the grading process. I never changed the way I did things and my grade was good one week and a tad lower the next week. But I have to give this instructor credit, he did get back to me anytime I had questions. I appreciate that.
Awesome class. Learned a lot and would recommend to any one.
This class was very hard. The assignments were not hard but satisfying the instructors enough to get a passing grade was. Woods and the adjoining instructor Ryan Craig were very critical on grades. The movies were terrible choices also. I hated this class.
Very interesting class. Steven Woods does have an unorthodox method of teaching but I expected as much from a philosophy class. The class wasn't too difficult, it was mainly a lot of lecturing and discussion on philosophical methods. There were several online discussion boards to participate in on various topics. He only gave one test at the end.
This class was ridiculous. Reading the description of the class in the course catalog, it seems like it would be fun. The movie choices were horrible and it was like the class was nothing but busy work with variances in how they were graded.
This was my second semester to have Professor Woods as my instructor. I attended his Pop Culture class the previous semester and enjoyed every minute of it. Although the discussions in his Philosophy class were more difficult to follow than in Pop Culture, Steven saw to it that we got something out of it. He's one of the best professors out there.
Steven is the best professor I have ever had. If there is an art to teaching, he has it. I took three courses of his within two semesters last year and still find myself learning from and feeling inspired by them. He is not only wise, but he's also very funny. Highly suggest taking his classes if you want a meaningful education and experience.
Steven Woods is an excellent teacher that I would recommend to anyone that is serious about their education. He's honest, fair and appoachable. Work hard and you'll receive an "A".
He is the WORST professor I have ever had. It would take him a week to email students back regarding assignments or questions in the class. He had horrible communication. I never would recommend him to anyone and he should not be a professor. DO NOT take him unless you want to be confused the whole time and want to pull your hair out.
Most inefficient teacher I've ever had. The ONLY responses via email I got from him were as group responses, and even then, only after several of us emailed him. This being an online course, we don't get face time, so email is our only correspondence - which he doesn't do well. And, it has taken him the entire semester to grade things from week 2.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He didnt grade any assignments after the third week of class. There is no idea to know how you are doing in the class because he gives no feedback. You are required to watch a movie a week, and do an online discussion, character profile, and symbol identification. Save yourself and take a different class.
This class was up close and personal. There were students from all walks of life and everyone was made to feel like family. I have never really been accepted by anyone who was not of Native descent but in this class, everyone was accepted. It is important to know that you can feel like you belong, that your existence is meaningful. Awesome class.
I took Mr. Woods' online Hollywood's America. Is upfront about what you need to turn in but, other than that your on your own. He takes months to grade anything and at first he provided feedback, but after the first few, stopped giving any. Hard to correct your mistakes, to receive a better grade on the next paper. Never ever replies to emails.
Awesome teacher! He had alot of speed bumps while i attended his class so I feel like it was kind of an easy A. However, I won't take anyone but him for Native American classes. He knows his stuff :)
Amazing teacher! Very relatable, helpful and easy to understand. I LOVE this professor.
He is very open minded and willing to hear other's points of view. The class is one big discussion.
He was okay. I didn't like the fact that I didn't get grades until now and I still haven't received my final grade at the end of December almost. I only emailed him once because everything is pretty self explanatory. Each week you watch a movie, do a short discussion and do an optional character analysis. ( You must complete 8 for the semesters)
Mr. Woods is a very straight to the point kind of guy... He is decent at making what he says understandable. As far as the class goes, Wednesdays are you "Class days" and you will post on certain criterias. The test however are actually difficult, but your allowed 2 tries for the midterm and semester final. (That proved to save my grade)
Pretty easy class lots of discussion
Class is pretty straightforward. Read, watch a film, discuss it. There are only two exams that basically just cover the readings. He grades the first few assignments right away, but gets slow later in the semester. Assignments are OK cause you pretty much do the same thing for each film so it's not like it was hard.... Good class...
Professor was extremely easy going and interesting. If more teachers were like him, more people would graduate from college. Coming to class was required but I missed a lot of classes and communicated with him and he worked with me. All of the tests and quizzes are done online outside of class .. SO GREAT!!
Stephen is an interesting guy. He is enthusiastic about the class (humanities II) and he knows what he is talking about. I hated the class just because I don't like humanities or anything like that, but I would definitely recommend him if you are taking a required class or are into the subject.
I took the online course. Blackboard is a little confusing, and assignments are a little confusing at first. But assignments are pretty much the same for each film, so it gets easier. Test are over chapters in the book, and you have to join discussion for 8 films. Overall good class, but he is a very slow grader.
We spent 45 minutes one day on his Facebook page. This is my 2nd time taking him (I don't know why) and both classes are not college classes; they are Steven classes. He thinks he's better than everybody else, and makes students feel dumb when they ask questions. I have learned literally NOTHING in this class, and DO NOT RECOMMEND TAKING HIM!
Slow grader, cant reply to emails. Blackboard for his class was so confusing that its hard to find out what your actual assignment is. I have never rated a teacher before on here but I thought it was necessary to help everyone else not pick him as a teacher. Worst one i've had in 3 years of being at TCC.
He will not take the time to email you back if you have questions. If this is your first online class and you have no idea what your doing like I did then don't take this class. I managed to pass with an a because I was doing a bunch of work I didn't have to do and I guess he took pitty on me. The two test you'll take are hard, just guess and check
I took the Humanities class to finish out my degree. I was hoping for the best considering this professor's mixed reviews. I have genuinely never met someone more prideful, arrogant, and full of himself than this guy. Very quick to cut down and make people feel stupid. Class was meh, his blackboard structure looked to be written by a child. PASS!
The post about spending time on his FB in class is accurate. Guy is just different and to some students he did come off kind of rude, but if you get involved with class discussions and don't miss then you should pass. Act interested in his talks about himself and he will like you. His BB was weird so I just gave up on looking at it a cple weeks in.
I have no idea why this professor is graded so badly. I had him for Pop Culture to finish my second humanities credit and it was a super enjoyable class. He isnt arrogant or self centered, he is just very cultured and philosophical. He is super open-minded, and he was always focused on his students. Lecture heavy, but encouraged class discussions.
Definitely one of the more caring professors. Would take again. He is a really funny guy.
Steven is a terrible professor. I've not yet received an e-mail back about an assignment I sent him in FEBRUARY! Now, I am concerned about my grade as he doesn't grade Discussion Board posts, or anything else for that matter for the entire semester. I wouldn't take this class again if they offered it for free.
Based on weekly discussion and 2 tests. Overall not bad except he doesn't grade any discussions until few days before the end of semester and there's no point-grade system. Final grade looks to be whatever he felt like giving out even if all of the individual grades were fine-_- PARTICIPATION MATTERS
The class was interesting, being that you get to watch all sorts of movies. However, Mr. Woods isn't all that good of a professor. He doesn't get involved in his own class until the end of the semester when he grades everything. He doesn't grade assignments individually when they are due. Overall, good class, but you're pretty much on your own.
He really is a nice guy but you determine your own grade. If you show up and participate you will receive a good grade. I found that speaking up in class and expressing your opinions makes him like you more. I do recommend this class for anyone who is willing to put forth the effort.
This is the hardest A ever. You have to watch films every week and then post a discussion board and respond to other students. Your grade is effected by other students to if they dont respond to you. Also, on top of weekly assignments you ha e to read the textbook each week. You also ha e a midterm and final ( be prepared), and two papers.
I felt in the dark for majority of the semester on where I stood with my grade. Discussions, essays, two exams. The exams are heavily weighted and I ended up with an overall grade that did not reflect my work in the course. Extremely disappointed in how this online course was conducted.
Easy class. Light reading, watch some movies, do a discussion board on the movies, write one paper, analyze one scene and take 2 tests. Honestly participation with a little bit of effort should get you an A. The only problem is he's bad about communication and grading in a timely manner. Other than that its a fine class.
I took Art of Film class online. Mr. Woods is a very fair instructor, he lays all details out before class began and followed the syllabus and schedule to a T. You watch assigned movies and participate in discussion boards, there are 2 tests, a midterm and a final which he prepares you for. He gives weekly reminders and is great at communication!
Professor Woods does not communicate with his students at all, even when everyone is having a major problem. Would not recommend anyone take his classes. It seems the course is easy, but his absence may make you fail.
"Art of Film", figured I'd enjoy it for my love of film. We "have" to watch 12 films that you're responsible for purchasing/renting unless you want to get through via movie clips, Google, and reading up on the films (you can). He's awful at communication, wouldn't answer anyone's emails/calls in my class. Hope you like those Discussions Boards!
Much of the semester I was lost. The professor became ill and instead of another department member stepping in we went months with no grades entered and could never get ahold of anyone regarding assignments. He also expects you to completely immerse yourself in the discussions otherwise you won't get an A. Be willing to participate and talk.
Professor is not very involved in the class and bad at grading things on time/communication. The semester is almost over and so far there are only 4 grades in out of 13 assignments. He suggested a class Zoom meeting back in August and never got back around to it. Workload wise, it's not a bad class but you're pretty much on your own.
Woods gives next to no feedback on your assignments and instead directs everyone to reread the syllabus. Some of the assignment prompts also have a lot of typos and the overall class is kinda unprofessional.
He never responds to emails, and grades were never in on time. He grades very subjectively and does not give clear criteria for his wants. He does not seem to care about his online students. There were two exams for the summer semester. He does not prepare you for them, so you'll be walking into the test blind. I REGRET taking his class.
I really enjoyed this class and the movies he chose to watch for this course. Enthusiastic talking about movies and the minilecture videos were helpful. Let's you take exams multiple times to improve your scores. Lots of choice in which assignments to do. I had some mental health issues this summer and he was super supportive working with me.
I didn't care for the discussion board being the majority of our grade this summer. He is a very nice man and super intelligent though. The ones saying there was no material to prepare for exams didn't look very hard. I was able to find all answers in his notes on blackboard. Only complaint is slow grader and discussion board format.
I wouldn't ever take this class again out of frustration, a professor I can't get ahold of, doesn't even come close to grading in a timely manner, gets frustrated due to confusion regarding class structure, all around just a poor professor.
Professor Woods is a super intelligent man and an amazing human. He cares deeply about the native culture and I feel smarter when I hear him speak or read something he's written. He is a slow grader, but I think he might be misunderstood based on his reviews.
The instructor does not grade in a timely manner at all, rarely responds when students have questions, and gives feedback only in the very beginning. Very few of the films required for this class were watchable, which is insane because there is an abundance of great films where you can discuss the "American Dream".
Not a good Professor, no grades put in until the end of the semester and didn't respond to a single email. no expectations of the work he wanted so i didnt know if i was failing or not until the week of finals. watch a movie every week and write over it is basically all you do.
Professor Woods is nice, but I don't feel that i learned much from this class. I took it Summer 22 so it was a shorter semester & some of the material didnt make sense for our particular semester, like it was copied&pasted from Spring/Fall. He is difficult to reach and get a response from. It was an easy course, but you're pretty much on your own.
Professor Woods was immensely difficult to reach through the entire summer semester. The layout of his Blackboard was very glitchy and a lot of links to turn in assignments don't work which he has had to go back and fix numerous times after being blown up in emails by students. If you have a question, expect it not to be answered.
Steven Woods orchestrated such an amazing course. I took his class during summer and it was very interesting. I absolutely enjoyed all the convo forums and interacting with other students. So, the social requirements for the course were very engaging. Awsome professor. Easy to talk to and work with if you have any issues.
I'm still working but basically ur assigned movies one movie per week which you do an assignment on and that is it. slow to respond and is a very very tough grader and provides no feedback as to how you couldve done better right now I have a C in his class and A's in every other class. Midterm and Final will essentially be your entire grade.
Your grade mostly depends on discussion board posts and replies. You have to watch one movie a week (for a 16 week course) and really think critically about it. Professor Woods is a very intelligent man. The only downside is he is a very slow grader. But other than that, I would definitely take him again!.
He is a decently good professor. The only thing to beware of is the quizzes are pretty hard and he never puts in grades. Also, good luck reaching him by email. Took him a week to ask about final grades. However, if you just show up to class, you will pass. He is looking for effort on quizzes and discussions. Would not take the course again though.
You watch a movie and read a chapter from a textbook every week followed by a discussion post that's based on quantity over quality. Grading made no sense, after doing the math I should have passed with a High C and according to his class, I failed. He is a slow grader and it is very hard to get him to respond to emails.
Can't get ahold of him, emailed him once mid-semester and never got a response. Doesn't grade in a timely manor. RUINED my 4.0 GPA and I'm pretty sure it was his error. Didn't see it in time because my dad is on his death bed. Don't recommend taking from him at all! It's a 50/50 shot that no matter how hard you work you will end up S.O.L!!!
Professor Woods has a specific teaching style, but if you engage with it, the class can be manageable. The workload is heavy, with 12 movies to watch. unstuck AI was helpful for prep, alongside the textbook.
A lot of reading & in-depth responses for this course. The syllabus lists films, but you choose 3 you don't want. Excellent instructor. Deter from letting other students scare you. Work-heavy yes, but hard? Not even close. I shared a class with the reviewer who complained about their D, that person did not go into depth with their work.
He's a good teacher, he'll extremely lenient when it comes to late work. But he never answers emails like ever. It's impossible to communicate with him unless it's in class, i would not recommend an online class.
I took his 8 wk course, super hearvy! 2 movies per week (2hrs long), a chapter to read per week, 2 discussions with a prompt in each you have to answer and make sure you respond to 5-7 students posts plus a test each week. If you can find an easier humanities class do it!
These reviews are a little harsh, he's not bad by any means. I think majority of the complaints on here have to do with political views… he sometimes goes off track and talks about politics and the current state of the world, which might be upsetting to some lol. Easy and chill class so far!
This is just a personal preference, but I find it hard to stay present in class because it's just him lecturing. If you prefer learning by following along with some type of notes/slideshow on the board, this probably isn't the class for you. It's more of a lecture and then feedback course. But still an easy A if you need credits.
Absolutely loved him SO much! So kind, very intelligent, wants to hear your opinion. Really tries to help you understand confusing concepts. Absolutely take his class he is lovely.
