He moves quickly and his tests are challenging. He knows what he's talking about (author of like 20 books) and doesn't even use notes. Reading the book is overrated. He's always willing to help. Very conservative and outspoken.
I had him for the Civil War. He took a semester off the next semester, so I was sad not to have another opportunity to take a class with him. Man, he makes the civil war so amazingly exciting. If you have an opportunity, take his class! No papers!
Wooodworth is a great teacher, very flexible, knows alot of cool facts about u.s. history, an all around great guy. Ive taken many history classes and he is by far the best history teacher ive ever had, one of the best profs at tcu.
Great teacher... knows what he is talking about, you don't really have to buy the book-- go to class and take the notes! fun... Take this class~
One of my favorite teachers of all time. I loved going to class. He's entertaining and knows his stuff. He's fair in grading and always makes time for questions. I'm disappointed I can't take another class with him. No papers, and his tests are decent.
Extremely smart man and a great teacher. I would recommend him to anyone who is going to take history. His tests can be a little hard but overall he is great.
great teacher. make sure it is clear how to write the essays on the test because they can kill your grade. you must read the textbook!!! it's a very early class so make sure you get plenty of sleep and stay awake because he is a great teacher.
Class is long but he is a great teacher. Really knows his stuff. Tests can be difficult becasue of essays. Really cool guy, but class is long.
Definitely knows his us history, class is good if you can stay awake. Go to class, take notes and keep facts straight on the essays or they'll kill you.
Lectures are entertaining, he really knows his stuff. Tests are not bad at all, just make sure you know what he's looking for on the essay portion or it may hurt you. All-around good guy, helpful and understanding. TAKE THIS CLASS!!

Knows the Civil War like you wouldn't believe. Great lecturer. Doesn't take time to learn names, though. Tests all essay, but light on grading. Take Civil War class -- will open your eyes to events.
makes the history come alive, very exciting and makes alot of jokes. not a hard course, just come to class and take good notes. i would love to take another one of his classes agian.
Great teacher, no papers just test. goes over all the information in lectures
Hes a nice guy, but is it just me or was his grading a little difficult. Actually it was the T.A. grading our tests, and he could be verrrry stingy with the points. almost no one gets the full amount of points for the essay, you apparently have to write and research a seperate paper for that.
Lots of very interesting material, grades really easy for an upper-level. Great professor, very energetic and sometimes funny.
He grades fairly easy for a 4000 level class. The class is interesting, and his tests are straight off the lecture. The tests are essay and id (gives you a person or event and you have to talk about it) and you get to pick say 5 out of 8 of the id's and 1 out of 2 essays. Take it if you enjoy hist.
Wonderful lectures. He keeps you entertained with cool facts and stories. Knows his stuff. No papers. Multiple choice section of test is easy, essays are graded hard though. Overall great class, the man makes history interesting.
Great prof. Great class. He's entertaining, too, which is hard to find in a history class. It's clear why he's respected in his field nationwide. But he has hardly an ego. He's really in class to share his love of the Civil War with others. No papers and few books to read, but you'll learn a lot.
The lectures are the test, must be willing to go to class if you want to do well but he doesnt take attendance of anything. Great teacher and has the ability to make the time go fast. If you go to class you should have no trouble with an A or B.
great teacher! Knows a lot more than the text, and shares interesting facts, conspiracy theories, and scandals that you just dont get to hear about in the books!
One of the best professors here at TCU. He knows the material inside and out. I actually looked forward to going to class because it was SO interesting! He makes history fun.
Great prof., i had never taken his class before until i took the civil war class. He knows his stuff when it comes to the civil war. i believe any one that likes history should take his civil war class.
Woodworth makes class soooo much more fun than history really is. Tests are straight forward from his lectures, attendance is a must if u want a good grade. He knows his stuff and adds remarks to his everyday lectures..funny guy
good teacher, easy tests. reading tests are hard, especially when you have to read his books. makes lots of football analogies, very easy to follow along.
The guy is really knowledgeable, he knows what he's talking about. He makes corny jokes and I don't advise anyone to take it as an 8am cause it's kinda boring. Take notes, his lecture tests are easy. Reading tests are hard especially if you don't read. Take the class it's an easy A.
Doesn't teach so much as reward people for agreeing with him, and it will only cost you $2400. Incredibly right wing opinions with a hint of facts sprinkled here and there. Easy class if you don't care about learning anything.
greatest prof ever! tests are easy classes are interesting. talks about college football and just great
Great professor. My favorite since coming to college. Very helpful and tests come from lectures. Go to class and you will make a B without any effort, an A with little effort.
go to class, take notes and listen a little...he gives you a review with all the terms you need to know for the test. really not a bad history class at all. only tricky part is the one essay on the tests, but as long as you read through your notes once or twice before the test, on top of studying the terms, you will be fine.
He is a terrible lecturer. There is absolutely no class interaction, he just stands in front of the class and talks in a monotone drawl. The only grades for the class are reading quizzes and essay tests(which don't have reviews). Oh yeah, and there are three books to read for the class; two of which he wrote.
Survey of US History after 1877, Dr. Woodworth is a smart guy with rather strong conservative opinions. Which is refreshing! I liked him a lot. He was pretty funny while lecturing at times, and he does it all from memory. His tests are pretty easy, though attending class helps. If you want a cool, easy history class, take Woodworth! PS he is sexy.
I had prof. woodworth for 3 classes. He is extremely smart and knowledgeable. However, he will not have much structure, just lectures, so make sure you take notes and pay attention. You dont want to miss much class either. But a nice prof and knows what he is talking about and you will learn a lot of cool things about history.
Survey of U.S. History Since 1877. Take him for your history! His class is easy but interesting! 3 tests and a final. He gives you study guides for all the tests and if you follow them you'll do well. You do need to go to class even though he doesn't take attendance because tests are straight from his lecture. He has conservative opinions.
This class had me worried! I thought I was getting a B, but ended up with an A! He knows his Civil War History, so don't try to play around, he will catch you on it! Great teacher and learned a lot!
Woodworth's class is pretty straightforward. The lectures aren't very interesting, but if you pay attention and take notes you will easily get an A. He's actually kind of funny. Don't miss class often. I wish I hadn't because I missed out on an easy A.
A very conservative professor. He actually graded me down for taking a liberal perspective on a topic. He is superb for knowledge but in an online MA course on Civil War he isn't particularly active with comments.
MY FAVORITE TEACHER! He actually kept history interesting, which is something that I was never able to achieve. Great guy and willing to work with you if you need the help. TAKE HIM!
Dr. Woodworth is brilliant and the best professor I have had at TCU. He is an expert in the Civil War and can tell you everything you ever wanted to know. Be forewarned, he will get up and lecture w/o notes for the entire class. Notetaking and attendance are a must. Plus read all the books. I highly recommend him for anyone interested in the C
If you like football, you'll love this class. Woodworth constantly makes references comparing historical politics with different NCAA conferences. If you pay attention you'll remember a lot of what he says. Can be an easy A if you put some effort into it.
Took 2 classes w/him & the reviews are pretty accurate (smart, funny, conservative, sexy). I abhorred history before taking his class, but he makes it interesting & relates well to students w/jokes and analogies. Attendance is crucial, exams are straightforward. He?s a true storyteller & has a talent for drawing you in?even w/the Illinois accent ;)
Very conservative professor, nice and helpful. Tells a lot of jokes and most are funny. An easy B push harder and a nice A. no homework or busy work, you don't need the book.
Absolutely awesome professor! My favorite at TCU, even though I'm not a history major. His lectures are very interesting and keep you listening... He tells funny jokes and makes a lot of football references. Great guy and even better professor! Take him for sure!!! Not an easy A, but read through your notes and you will be successful. Love him!
Awesome class! He's very animated and engaging in his lectures. He goes without a notebook or powerpoint, so you gotta keep writing. Great office hours policy and helpful if you see him. Takes a conservative approach to history, which is rare in the university setting. All quizzes and tests are from lectures. No homework!
Absolutely amazing professor. I was not a big History fan coming into this class but he made me really enjoy it. Makes History feel like a story that is easily understandable. Tests are multiple choice and essay and are challenging but fair. Uses slideshows but most of his notes come from him talking so you have to be attentive in class. Loved it!
Great professor. If you don't pay attention the lectures are boring, if you do pay attention their exciting. Tests are easy, just read the book.
Absolutely the best. I have had two courses with Dr. Woodworth and of all the courses I have taken (B.A. M. S. partial Ph.D.), he is the finest professor I have had. He is a recognized expert in his field. Being in his courses was an honor.
If you go to class you don't need to read the book. Loved Woodworth, still hate history and I barley studied and got a high B.
I'm actually taking a class online through Liberty University, where he's also a professor. He is probably the one of the three best history professors I've had, and I have certainly taken my fair share of history classes. I highly recommend him. He's incredibly knowledgeable and very clear in what he is teaching. A++
Best history class I've ever taken. Sticks to the facts. Everything comes from the lecture, so no need to get the book. No papers or homework, 4 exams and attendance quizzes. Go to the class, reread the notes prior to the next class, and the quizzes aren't a problem. Super helpful if you go to office hours. Great professor, great class.
Outstanding. Incredibly helpful. Pushed me to do more than what I thought I ever could. Kind, demanding, a true scholar.
He was really personable and easy to listen to each class. If his U.S. history class wasn't full I would have taken him again
I really like Woodworth as a person, but I was really not interested in the material we learned in this class. He is super knowledgable of the material, so he literally just stands at the front of the room and talks without power points or anything. As much as I tried to focus I always got bored in that class.
Very fair professor. The exams come straight from his lectures so it is important to go to class. If you study and listen in class it's an easy A! He is my favorite professor at TCU! He is a very energetic speaker and makes class fun!
VERY VERY VERY VERY GREAT TEACHER! He is very clear about what is on the test and his reviews are straight up test questions. I loved going to his class, he always made jokes and made class fun/ I did not read the book and I got through the class very easily. LOVE LOVE LOVE Dr. Woodworth!!!!!!
Epitomizes the derailment of higher education. Clearly highly knowledgeable and writes very well. Good for tenure bad for teaching. Neither understands how to engage the student in the learning process nor how to participate to the advantage of the student. Grading is subjective, soft and arbitrary. Horrible teacher – great historian.
Had him during the summer. He is one of the top teachers I've taken. He is vary fair and teaches vary good. There are hardly any professors like him in fairness and knowledge of the subject as well. I would definitely recommend him to anyone. Test come directly from lectures.
Great professor! If you go to class, you'll be able to answer the study guides. His study guides are straight-forward and contain relevant information for his exams. Only 2 homework assignments and none of his exams are cumulative, including the final. Highly recommend.
Don't bother buying the book, unless you're really bad at history. If you just go to class and take good notes, you'll be fine. He gives you 2 homework assignments that are super easy and his exams (4) are too. Exams are composed of 60 MC and an essay. The MC are super easy and he'll even review with the class before he hands out the test.
2 short homework worksheets, 4 exams (including final). Easy history class that is also really interesting. He only lectures, so that can get a little long sometimes. You don't ever have to read the book- just take good notes from his lectures. I really liked him and thought he was funny in a sorta dorky way. Would definitely take again!
I feel everybody rates him based on how nice he is. He's extremely intelligent, but a HORRENDOUS teacher. He talks AT you, not TO you. Lectures are very boring, uninforming, & non-inspirational. While he has a bit of notoriety based on his intelligence & experience, unfortunately, he severely lacks in connecting w/ students. Avoid his class.
Outstanding Professor and author! As a student of American history who has read countless books, his are among the best I've read. He cares and gives positive feedback. I learned a lot and would highly recommend taking a class from him!
survey from 1877 is a super easy class. attendance isn't mandatory. 4 tests and 2 homework assignments make up your grade. the book he suggests (the one he wrote) has questions you need to know at the end of the chapter; know them and you'll do fine on the tests.
Total nerd. likes to make political jokes and sometimes he goes a little too far. I definitely didn't like him in the beginning because of all of his political comments and opinions. he is very biased and take what he says with a grain of salt. 4 tests, 2 rare take home and two are normal in class multiple choice tests.
1877-Now: 4 tests- 2 are multiple choice and 2 are questions about the books you read (don't really need to read); lecture is so boring and attendance isn't mandatory. If you have a basic knowledge of US history you'll be fine. use the ?s at the end of his book to study. One of the easier history classes for sure
He lectures straight from his mind; there was no writing notes on the board or powerpoint to follow. He doesn't really engage the class or ask anyone to participate ever. The lectures are pretty boring and hard to follow. There are two papers and 4 multiple choice tests. The papers are pretty ambiguously graded and the tests come from the textbook.
Wonderful and encouraging professor who cares about the students. The texts were extremely helpful and he helps as you write the final paper by guiding the students through valuable feedback.
Read the textbook and listen to his lectures and it is an easy A. Grade based on 4 tests that are straight forward. Multiple choice format with a basic essay. Nice, humorous professor. Lectures can be long but he has good stories to enhance the material. Textbook chapters only have like 3-5 pages and are easy to understand. Highly recommend.
Great teacher! Hoping to have one of his classes again!
He does not care. Takes forever to respond to emails. Very difficult to follow during lectures as he rambles, says you can just read the book and pass. False- if you aren't in class even halfway listening you aren't gonna pass.
Does not care. Takes forever to respond to emails. Lectures are so boring and hard to pay attention to, he's monotone and rambles. You sit there wondering "is this going to be on the test?" People say you can just read the textbook- to be honest unless you already know a lot about history, you cant get by with just reading the book
Nice guy and always in a good mood but sometimes his jokes go a little too far. Only grades by 6 tests: 4 in-class and 2 take-home. TH are easy prompts based on 2 books but IC are really hard multiple choice. He tends to ramble in lectures and it gets boring. Pay attention in class and buy/read the online textbook or else you're not passing
Don't take class online. Gives more work because its online. His tests are ridiculous, 15 mc q's each worth 4pts and a 40pt essay with lockdown browser/camera & no notes. Impossible to please him. Essay assignments are graded hard too and his feedback makes no sense/not specific. Lectures at camera entire time, no slide notes. Wrote his own book.
Read the textbook content before class. Lectures will review and add more detail to course material. Essay portions of tests are graded rather harshly because he wants specificity. Very upbeat and energetic, kept lectures interesting even though he often goes on irrelevant tangents.
I would not take Prof. Woodworth again! He stands in front and lectures the entire class with no participation from students and you take your own notes. He makes you buy his textbook and is always behind on lectures. He expects you to know material on tests that he hasn't gone over and is super strict and unclear when grading essays.
I would not take this class again. Dr. Woodworth lectures straight from memory and didnt understand I had accommodations for teachers notes and would not allow me to have them. He is very lecture heavy. He also cant tell what chapters the exam is over because he just looks at the syllabus and says exams cover certain chapter when its inaccurate.
Prof. Woodworth knows what he is talking about, but stands in front & lectures the entire class. Must take your own notes as his slides have no words, only pictures. He is always behind on lectures - the tests will have questions on material he has not covered. Strict and unclear when grading essays & will not change your grade even if you visit
Avoid him if you can! He wasn't understanding at all...and doesn't really put in the efforts to help students...
Professor Woodworth is one of the best and most methodical lecturers on the Civil War. If you love military history, take this course. Very structured. Class consists of 2 Book Reports (easy), 3 Primary Source Reviews (easy), 3 Quizzes(multiple choice) and 3 Exams(essay). Do the weekly readings and take time to write good papers and its an easy A.
Professor Woodworth is an amazing professor. He is super caring and his lectures are very intriguing and genuinely interesting to listen to. This class has caused me no stress and I have actually learned more about history without feeling like I have been pressured to learn because of tests.
His lectures are very detailed and clear although they are long. Quizzes are multiple choice and tests are multiple choice/ essay. But, the textbook is easy to follow and corresponds directly with exams.
Probably one of the easiest classes I've taken at TCU. Professor Woodworth is passionate about history and the lectures are entertaining, however attendance is extra credit so really all you need to do is read the textbook which he wrote and it is super short and you will be fine. Highly recommend!
Take this class!!!! One of the easiest history professors. Textbook chapters are short and super easy to follow. Tests and quizzes aren't bad. Each class you go to is a bonus point. Going to class is helpful because the lecture slides don't have words on them. Would definitely recommend this class.
Class is all lectures. Genius in Civil War history and has written books on several topics. Lectures can be a bit dry, but he incorporates jokes and football analogies to lighten things up. Clear expectations. Would recommend. Online exams & quizzes.
Woodworth is an excellent choice for fulfilling a history core credit. He's incredibly intelligent and delivers his lectures entirely from memory, which makes his classes both impressive and engaging. Attendance is rewarded with extra credit, so if you show up and pay attention, it's very manageable to succeed.
If you need a history credit, take Woodworth! Attendance isn't mandatory and every class attended is extra credit. Exams and quizzes are online, take-home, with a lockdown browser. He uses a book but goes more off of his lectures, which are not recorded with no notes posted. Don't miss too many classes or you will have no clue what's going on.
