I only took this class for a GE but it turned out alright. His lectures are good and he tries really hard to make sure everyone understands the material. The two tests (midterm and final) are written and timed but if you study for them you should be fine. He gives a study guide for them. There is also one paper for the class, which isn't bad.
I took it during SPRING. You have to read ca 20 pages for the next lecture (not bad!). Exams are written and you have 1 hr. If you are better at writing and memorizing than at multiple choice, you should take this class. There is also a 5-page paper. Anderson is a great professor- young and very understanding of what work is really important.
I took Hist 202 and it was by far the most interesting GE I've taken at BYU. He is passionate about teaching, he truly cares about you. He's pretty young in the dept, his research area is German Media. Prof. Anderson makes you think about the importance of what is studied in class. His exams are written, if you study you'll do great.TAKE HIS CLASS!
Prof. Anderson is great! I would absolutely recommend him to anyone taking this class. He really gets into the lectures and makes it interesting. The tests are written and not too bad if you study- he gives you a study guide with a list of possible terms and essay questions. He is great. TAKE HIM
Oh my goodness. take this class! I loved this class. Not only was Professor Anderson a really fun and helpful teacher, but the way he taught and organized his class made it super easy to get an A. The tests were fair. If you take this class, do the readings and study for the tests and you'll do just fine.
This semester I got 6 A's and one B-. Anderson was my B-. It's an OK class, he just expects you to know WAY too much for the tests. It doesn't help that he's really picky grader either. What I thought were good essays he marked down quite a bit. Bottom line - if you like written tests then this is the class for you. If not find another prof.
Great teacher! loved what he taught and how he taught! He really made History entertaining and loved attending his class. His calss is graded simply on essays, if you are not a good writer or do not like writing DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He is a ver rough grader. And it is a history class so very subjective on what you write about.
Fantastic teacher, very rough grader. There is no homework besides reading before each class, for the pop quizzes, so the work load is really light. He gives you all of the terms you need to know and the topics you need to know for the essays on the tests, but he grades super super hard on the tests to "make up" for it.Take only if good at writing
1 paper all semester. Quizzes on the reading very infrequently. Knows his stuff and does his best to make it interesting (to be fair, I'm not a history fan).
Professor Anderson makes history enjoyable. I did not read the textbook, and I still managed to do well in the class. You will do a large research project, but it's nothing terrible. Highly recommend Professor Anderson, especially if you hate history but need to "get it out of the way."
I absolutely hated my first history class and was not looking forward to this class. Prof. Anderson made his classes really interesting, and since he is a little younger, tries to put himself in our shoes, so I ended up enjoying it. For a GE class I really enjoyed him as a teacher
My first history class was terrible and I was expecting more of the same, but I was surprised by the quality of this class. Professor Anderson has interesting lectures and gets the class involved. I did not like his tests, but I got a B+ in the class anyways.
I hate essays. Our grade was made up of a 5 paragraph essay for the midterm (w/ a few short-essay Q's as well), two 5 paragraph essays for the final, and a 'research' essay project during the semester. Dr. Anderson is great though, you can tell he gets stoked on history which I like. Not a bad GE.
Decided to minor in history because of this class. He actually talks about other parts of the world besides Europe/America, which is AWESOME. Organize the ID terms by theme and you'll have an easier time studying. Go to his office hours for help on your paper. He is very kind and I LOVED THIS CLASS!
I really liked the class but I dont feel he is a very fair grader. Not only was my midterm grade LOST, but was also docked points on essays for following TA's instructions. There is a HUGE lack of communication between the professor and TAs. The TAs were no help on reviewing my essay and gave me NO feedback on what the prof actually looks for. Poor
He is a very nice guy. Class is pretty boring. The only thing that he cares about is your test grades and 1 essay. He doesn't care about homework, attendance, or participation. Tests are difficult. This class is basically 100 percent memorization. Would not recommend taking it but it is a GE.
Fun class. Though it is a history class, he still allows you to take the subject material and see how it has effected the now. Fun lecturer who keeps you interested. Do the reading, he does not require it, but class discussion is so much more enjoyable if you do, and you will do better in the class.
Favorite teacher ever. Lectures are fantastic, highlight of my week. Excellent awareness of the students. Is SUPER passionate about history and is honestly hilarious. Grade is made up of 4 tests and a paper, thats it. Seems tough, but he gives EXCELLENT study guides, it's just up to you to study. Honestly cannot say enough about this teacher.
He cares about getting to know you- he memorizes all his students names and faces. I think that's really cool. Lectures are interesting- he tries to get the students involved. Course is comprised of 3 written exams (short answerparagaph length) and an essay assignment. Find buddies to study with- and you'll do just fine!
He is a great teacher and very clear about what he is expecting for tests. I liked the class because there wasn't very much busy work. He just had 4 tests and a written paper. The tests are all written which can be difficult for some people.
Best professor I've had at BYU. Tests are based mostly on the lecture. No reading quizzes in this class, but does have several class periods dedicated to discussing the readings. Assignments were interesting & largely self-directed. He teaches by theme, which is very clear. I highly recommend taking a class from him.
Prof. Anderson told us exactly what he expected. He gave us a list of terms and the essay questions well before the tests. One essay, but it wasn't bad at all. He doesn't believe in multiple choice which made tests a bit challenging for me, but they were very fair. He told us that he wants to start doing reading quizzes.
The class was really interesting, but the lectures could get pretty long sometimes. He tries to involve students though, which is hard in a big class. Tests were very straight-forward, and if you can memorize well, very doable. Very approachable. Readings were pointless, cus it was all covered in lecture. If you take Hist 202, take from him
Once you take the first test, it's really easy to ace the following ones. All of his tests are the same and he tells you exactly what to study. Super nice.
I loved Dr. Anderson. He's very kind and funny. He is also very knowledgeable! He gives really great lectures, even on topics that I had absolutely zero interest in I still felt engaged in his class. Reading can be done without. Tests are a lot of memorization and application, but nothing too bad. One really short research paper that's easy.
He is hilarious and brilliant.
This class covers a lot of material but Pr Anderson does a good job at giving us even the basis on each topic. He was willing to work with the students, made the tests easier, and only assigns one paper in the entire semester. If you put some effort in it, it will be an easy class.
Overall, Dr. Anderson is just a really nice guy. Although the topics in his lectures were a little boring, he does his best to change them up and get the students involved. Very knowledgable, patient, and willing to help. I would take a class from him again.
The class was difficult mostly because it required a lot of reading and memorizing. I studied hard, but it still wasn't enough for the tests that were a huge chunk of our grade.
Amazing professor if you like history. He is very passionate about the subject. He loves to liven the class up by watching youtube and videos throughout his lectures. He's laid back and willing to work with students. I was sick during a test. I contact him an hour before and he was very accommodating. Really awesome teacher. Highly recommend
He is very endearing and it is obvious he wants his students to participate in his class. That being said, his tests are over the top when it comes to a GE course. a LOT of memorization and all the tests are short answer and short essay. If you don't word things the way he wants you to, you will be docked. Wouldn't recommend for a GE class.
This man tries his absolute hardest to make the class enjoyable for everyone, it's just unfortunate that it's a history class and boring by nature. He makes some hilarious comments which make it better. Very few grades (4 short essay/answer tests, 1 research paper) which makes it challenging to get a good grade, but he's clear about what he wants.
Dr. Anderson is very concerned for his students and tries to keep us interested and involved throughout each lecture. You can tell he really loves the material. The exams are difficult, but you will do fine if you understand his expectations, study early, and meet with him after each exam to discuss how you could improve your ID answers.
One of my favorite professors at BYU. The class is pretty easy and I've taken more classes from him. Definitely take this class.
I took 309 and 498 from Dr Anderson. He was definitely my favorite professor at BYU (no question). He is brilliant yet very down to earth and approachable. His lectures are so well structured and engaging. The homework wasn't too heavy but he is a tougher grader when it comes to papers. Tests were essay format. I learned so much from his classes.
I loved Dr. Anderson's Holocaust class! Definitely my favorite history class I've taken so far. You do read a lot, but they are interesting and help you learn. He is so passionate about the topic and knows his stuff. There's a pretty equal balance between lecture and discussion. He grades papers pretty tough, but the tests are open ended & good.
I love Dr. Anderson. He's super relaxed and funny. I'm taking a second class from him now and he remembered my name after two and a half years, from a lecture of 200. Really good guy, very accessible and willing to help. Tests are done in class, which is awesome. Just make sure you stay on top of things, and you'll be fine.
His style is adaptable and enthusiastic. He teaches in a very clear manner and implements hands-on learning. There were only half a dozen assignments focusing on the 10-12 page research paper which didn't turn out to be as hard as I had thought. I learned more about how to write research papers than I feel like I would have with with anyone else!
Dr. Anderson was by far the best History teacher I've had. His lectures were fascinating, and he always paid attention to the needs of the classes, stopping and telling stories when we got bored. This was also the hardest I've ever had to work for my grade. His tests are not memorization tests: he expects you to understand the *why* of history.
As a professor? Very likeable & engaging. As a class? Can get pretty stressful preparing for the short answer tests - having good general knowledge of over 35+ terms. Get started on those ASAP. Only 1 essay. He lets you decide writing it either the 1st or 2nd half of the semester. Workload is basically reading. Just worry about the tests
Prof. Anderson makes this GE good & bearable. He makes it known exactly what you need to know/understand for his tests & he is very open with your responses. Also, don't buy the textbook. He wants you to read, but his lectures are better for info. I haven't used my book more than twice. He's a great professor for this class & I would recommend him.
There aren't that many things that show up on your grade, which makes for an easy semester, but a tough A at times. If you put a lot of effort into the few tests, and assignments you should be good. He is very flexible and helpful if you ask for help.
Professor Anderson does his best at making this GE class engaging and explaining why history is important and applicable in all fields of study. He gives you a study guide at the beginning of each unit so you know exactly what will be on the test. Only one paper and you get to decide if you do it the first or second half of the semester.
I learned a lot from this class, and I liked Professor Anderson. I did pretty bad on the first midterm but wayy better the next two, so just make sure to fully understand what the tests entail and study for them. If you have the dates and significance down, you'll be good. A bit of reading, and tests are super important to grade, but a good class!
He's very humble and really respects his students' thoughts. His lectures are really dry, but he does have a little bit of a sense of humor that helps. He's super chill and lets move your test if you're out of town (like for a wedding, etc.) as long as you plan ahead. Tests are all short answer, and there is a paper but it's not too bad.
He's easy to understand, smart, and compassionate. This class takes effort, but that makes sense for a course that teaches us how to become historians. My advice: try to review every assignment with him before turning it in. If you do it ahead of the deadline and give him time to read it, his feedback gives you a second chance at the assignment.
Professor Anderson obviously cares for his students and is very accommodating, especially with deadlines. He is easy to talk to outside of class if you need help and he wants to be involved with his students. He infuses his lectures with some humor which makes class time enjoyable.
We only had 1 paper the entire semester and he gave us lots of time to work on it as well. The TA's are super helpful if you have questions or get stuck during the essay. If you go to class, or even just look over the slides and understand the concepts then you will be good for the tests, make sure you know the "significances" of the Key IDs
Dr Anderson is super chill and gives good lectures. Tests are pretty hard- you have to memorize a lot. Pay attention, take notes, and ask questions and you'll do fine.
Disclaimer: I'm a history major. I loved this class. The lectures were good and the readings helped but weren't necessary. Anderson is nice, patient, and reasonable. Tests required lots of studying but expectations were clear. (I don't think they were too hard.) Very little hw. Take what TAs say w/ grain of salt. Go to class and you'll be fine.
This class is all about writing a big research paper. Class periods are usually short with little need to prepare. Anderson is awesome and super willing to help you outside of class. The TA was great too. Anderson wants you to succeed and is super kind yet honest. He gives good feedback and criticism. Please participate in class, he deserves it lol
This class didn't have many assignments, but most of them were really hard. Professor Anderson is a really picky grader. He's willing, however, to go over work before you submit it, which I would recommend doing. Nice guy but a stressful class. P.S. I wouldn't take this class as a freshman.
Dr. Anderson is a really good professor he is interested in lectures and tries to keep everything entertaining. But make sure you study for exams and understand all of the terms or they will be very difficult. Don't worry yourself too much about the readings, as long as you attend the lectures and take notes you'll do fine.
Professor Anderson is a wonderful person and honestly super understanding and helpful. If you love history- this will be a great class for you! However, he often assumes that you know all about terms/events that your 7th grade history teacher maybe mentioned once... Also, the tests are really hard. Like really hard. Take hours and hours of prep!!:(
Dr Anderson is a very caring Prof, so he will work with you when needed. His class is very interesting, and he is very entertaining. There are not a lot of grades (a few assignments, a paper, and final), but almost all the "readings" were movies. Overall, great class.
Professor Anderson is a great professor! He takes the time to make sure we feel prepared on our assignments and gives useful feedback. Class discussions are always interesting and a pleasure to attend.
Professor Anderson is very passionate about history and he is good at getting the class involved in lectures. He initially explained the tests to be pretty straightforward but then ended up grading extremely hard and was super picky with our free response answers so unless we were super detailed with every question, we'd get docked many points.
Professor Anderson is great. He's a really nice guy and cares about all his students. He liked to say a prayer for us before each test. Attendance isn't required but I would really suggest it. Pay attention to his slides/presentation but really focus on what he says; that is where I got the majority of my notes from. Super funny guy, great teacher.
Such a good professor. Very clear criteria and tests are pretty easy if you know the terms on the study guide he gives you. He's super helpful if you have questions. 4 tests that aren't that bad and one, 3 page research paper that's easy if you ask the TAs for help. Highly recommend.
I loved taking from Professor Anderson and went to class looking forward to his lectures. This course is graded by a weekly online discussion, three tests, one research paper, and a final exam. His tests take a bit of prep, but honestly, just fill out the study guide and make flashcards as you learn the material and you'll be fine!
He designed the course so that we learned so much. The packback assignments were kind of annoying at first but I realized later that it helped me learn about whatever I wanted to in the context of the course. Professor Anderson really loves history and what he was teaching about! He knows a lot and is just a good guy.
I can tell Professor Anderson cares about what he's teaching. A Packback assignment due every week, 3 midterms, and 1 final (half of the final was basically midterm 4, and the other half was a cumulative essay). Flashcards worked well for me for the midterms. I got the grade I did because I did not put in the work I should have. Professor is great.
Professor Anderson is my favorite professor I have ever had! He is kind of a tough grader, but also very fair. He is always willing to help you get the grade you want. His lectures are always super interesting, and everyone in the class has come to love and respect him. He requieres a lot, but it comes from wanting you to succeed.
He has a lot of slides for this class, but he keeps his lectures entertaining and informational. I learned a ton from this class, and he is one of my favorite professor that I have taken.
Professor Anderson is great. His TA's are not. Tests are hard but not impossible. Professor Anderson cares and structures the lectures well. I really appreciated having him as a professor. Great guy and a great lecturer.
I have never had a professor who was so disrespectful. His tests are graded so hard. No matter how much I studied or what class notes I took he still managed to find reasons to take off points on my exams. He is a very harsh grader and very condescending. After one of my midterms he wrote on the bottom of my exam "did you even study".
Dr. Anderson is amazing. He cares so much about History and his students. As someone with a love for history, I really enjoyed his lectures. He doesn't assign a bunch of useless assignments and has very clear grading requirements for his assignments and tests.
The lectures are kind of boring, but it is a relatively easy class to take. You can download the slides from lecture if you miss class and should still be fine. The test layout is the same for each test, so you know what to expect. For the final, there is an essay, but he shows you the list of prompts and you get to choose which one you write on.
One of my favorite professors of all time. Class is organized well, with not too many assignments but enough you weren't stressing. One "big" research paper, but he's very accessible if you need help. Very understanding guy who gives great lectures and posts everything online. His tests are all in-class instead of in the testing center, love.
Like others have said, he's one of BYU's best. Expects participation in discussions, so do the readings. Enthusiastic, knowledgeable, big vocab. I kept a running list of words he used, here are a few personal favorites: anathema, duplicitously, succinctly enumerated, fomented. He just whips these words out of his pocket, it's pretty impressive.
You can tell that Prof. Anderson really loves what he teaches. That being said, don't bother buying the textbook, just go to lectures, take good notes and you'll be fine. DO NOT procrastinate studying. Tests are based solely on memorization of material so work hard and you can get an A. Really engaging class though so I would recommend!
This might be one of my favorite classes at BYU! There were a lot of movies/TV shows to watch for homework, but they were pretty fun and watching them all was not critical to getting a good grade. Reading was not really required. The class interesting as we went over the history of the 20th century through the lens of screen and radio media.
Professor Anderson is a great professor, you can really see the care that he puts into the material he covers. He is very enthusiastic and energetic when he teaches. He has an amazing teaching style and the material covered isn't too difficult. However there is not a clear outline for what he expects on the tests, which can be graded harshly.
Professor Anderson is truly a great man and a great historian. He clearly cares about teaching and is completely willing to meet with students and help in whatever what he can. I met with him several times and he was always helpful and understanding about whatever issue. Truly one of the best professors I've had.
One of the kindest and most accommodating profs I have had. His class is doable if you put in some work. Exams are open ended but you know all the terms during the whole unit. Only other assignments are weekly discussion prompts and an essay. He wants you to succeed but also understands this is a required GE, would recommend!
Lots of reading but you don't need any of it. He gives you all test terms at the start of each unit. All are covered in lecture, but tests are more than memorization and require critical thinking & connection beyond his lecture points. All free response, no multiple choice. Graded by 3 midterms, the final, a research paper, and weekly dialogue.
You dont need the textbook. Probably spent 30 mins on homework a week and his lectures cover everything you need to know for the test. He understands that your most likely taking the class for GE credit and makes the course pretty easy
Be prepared for him to say "indicative" a lot. In all seriousness he was a G. Whole class was dying of laughter at all his jokes. Just a chill guy.
Prof Anderson made what could have been a boring class both interesting and personal. He was reasonable, too--when the university-assigned readings felt repetitive, he dropped a few. He recognized that UNIV 101 shouldn't be our top priority and didn't treat it like that, but made it meaningful at the same time. He clearly cares about his students.
Prof Anderson is a super nice guy. Tests aren't really that difficult, they're just graded harshly. I can't believe I got an A in this class. I do not like history so this class was very difficult for me and required MANY hours of studying. Unless you have a love of history I do not recommend. The comment below about critical thinking is so true!!!
Professor Anderson is a nice guy who loves history. The workload is pretty reasonable, and tests are straightforward (class average typically around a high B). He is very understanding and down to earth. I would totally recommend him for anyone looking for an easy GE.
tests are all handwritten. if you prepare for tests, you can probably do pretty good. he's super nice and willing to work with you. he won't grade you on the readings or attendance, but it's not a bad idea to show up. you might not fail if you never go though.
I really like Prof. Anderson. He truly cares about you as a student and tries to make lectures interesting. He always posts the slides, so if you ever miss a day it's not the end of the world. He is funny and engaging and I would recommend him to anybody. Tests aren't too hard either, but require effort and understanding.
Great guy. Loved him as a professor. He's a pretty tough grader. Theres not much assignments but their all written and require lots of effort.
Professor Anderson really cares about his students! Super chill and would make real effort to make lectures more interesting. Exams are pretty tough.
Dr. Anderson is really funny and very aware of his audience! I will say although no attendance is mandatory, still go. Tests are kinda hard. ALSO DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK, it's a waste of money
I enjoyed his lectures but tests were BRUTAL. Didn't feel like test were about lecture material at all. Do not recommend if you're looking for a simple GE, I studied like none other for this class and still got eaten alive on exams. He was interesting, just wish his tests were structured differently.
Really nice guy! Lectures were a little boring and slides weren't super helpful to look back on, so paying attention in class is VERY important. This class had a lot of readings, but you can skimp on a some and still do well. SUPER nitpicky when grading writing assignments, but he was willing to meet with me and improve my essay draft one on one
I found Anderson's grading difficult to understand, but he was always accessible out of class, so meeting with him about questions helped a ton. you should do fine so long as you take his feedback to heart, and put effort into your assignments (he can tell if you wrote it the night before!)
This was a pretty good professor, and flexible at times with grading when he feels he's fallen short. When I needed to miss class, the TA's were super helpful. Barely did any of the readings and skimmed when needed and got an A-. Still I got that grade by studying hard, and fill out the study guide during class!! Only one paper, but 4 exams.
I found Professor Anderson to be incredibly helpful. I learned a lot. He helps us learn how to effectively write, and is also very kind. He spends hours carefully reading all the work we turn in and gives good feedback. I would highly recommend taking Historian's Craft from him.
Professor Anderson is probably my favorite professor I've had at BYU. He's a quirky guy but he cares so much about history and he can tell when the lectures get boring and tries to make them more interesting! He also is looking to help you, and tried to help our whole class out when he could! Absolutely would take him again if I got a chance!
Prof Anderson certainly knows the field he teaches. But this class whooped me. Its long lectures and he goes through TONS of content at a time. They are interesting but Take good notes. Grad was just based on the four exams in the class and a paper you turn in at the end. But the exams are tough and have around 30-50 terms you must know in depth.
Homework is easy, papers are tough. Beware: some assignments are scheduled last minute (don't expect to know the due dates) he grades things weeks later, feedback on papers isn't that helpful, and the research paper & final are together worth 55% of your grade. Dr. Anderson is a nice guy, but, unless film is your passion, take a different class.
Only a couple of homework assignments, which are easy, but papers are graded relatively harshly. He grades things months late, and the final is very intense and with a large portion of the grade. This class was all over the place and lectures get confusing, as he explains film as if you are already a film historian. I wouldn't recommend.
