makes class fun and intersting, pulls no punches, tells you what is expected and his coursework is fair
No Comments
You better study hard. His tests are hard, but fair. If you get an A in his class, it will be one that you will deserve due to hard work.
Fair teacher, tells you what he expects right up front. Personable and helpful, especially if you're having trouble. Do the labs and study for the tests and you'll be fine. I got an A in this one.
be ready to learn he is a tough cookie but was fair! i really liked him!

Who are these people that rated him? Avart was the most horrible professor I have ever had. The man does not want to be teaching... he may as well have "discontent" tatooed on his forehead. As for the course, ignore his lectures - just memorize the text and break out your decoder ring to sort through his ambiguous wording on tests.
I hate biology, and really had fun takin it with Avart. He is not easy, but explains very well so makes the course a little lighter. His tests are multiple choice, as long as u study..u'll be fine, he goes by his headline. To me, he's a great teacher. That was one class i really learned something and still remember it!
hmmm if i havent taken any bio before u will be studing all the time its alot u need to know but he is great and fair and very nice but u will need to work for an A
He didn't have good teaching methods. All he did the entire period was lecture from the book. The test was nothing like the review sheets.
Avart gives the same tests year after year. Students who know someone who previously had him have a distinct advantage. He also curves for foreign students. Do the online tests.
You will have to understand the text book/labs fluently to manage an A; the lecture alone will not accomplish this. While it can be a pain, you do, however, end up learning a lot because of this. The tests can be tricky (the majority of questions involve a full understanding of the material and not simply a definition). Good teacher; hard class.
He is good teacher, very organized and know what he is teaching. But, this class is not easy to get A.
He is a good teacher, but so hard to earn an A or even a B. You really learn something in his class but his test is extremely hard and tricky. You have to study many times and very clear for the content. if you is a good student and want to learn sth, he is a good recommender, but if you just want a easy A then dun take him.
He was cool. i had a guess which nobody was a science major or a nursing major. He did not grade too hard. He very helpful answering questions, but he dosen't answering questions when he is on roll. Test is pretty is easy if study and come to class most of the but don't miss any labs there is no make up.
Dr. Avart is professional, intelligent, interested in your success, and dedicated. If you are willing to put the work in, he will meet you more than halfway. Biology is not an easy class for me but I studied every day and went to him for help on more than one occasion. Anyone who is serious about learning should be happy to take his class.
This is a hard class no matter the professor. Make sure you read the book thoroughly, pay attention in lecture, and take good notes. You can get an A by remembering everything from the book. Make sure you pay attention during lab. The exams cover info, not what you did. If u miss an exam u substitute your final grade for it.Ex 3 n LabEx 2 hard
Dr Avart is very professional and make biology interesting. He has an open door policy. I was grateful to start my science courses off with a great start. Kudos to Dr Avart..ps..his test are hard so please study the info he provides
His not fair for exams, watch out! read the book and hand outs, tests muli choice but hard. his not a good teacher.
perfect proffesor
He's a very good teacher, while his tests are difficult he makes sure you have a study guide and know what pages in the book to read. He's got a good sense of humor, makes sure you know what you're learning and wants you to be interested in Biology. For my first science class since high school (6 years ago) it was a good experiance.
He is passionate, intimidating, tests are tricky, gives great examples, sounds like he is mad a lot and is a pretty sarcastic wiseguy. But I must say, BEST TEACHER AT CCP. You will learn SO much because it is impossible to sleep in his class and he makes things interesting. He is extremely smart and knowledgeable. You still need to study HARD.
Dr. Avart is concise and clear and actually makes biology fun!!! I may even change my major!!!
his tests are out of the world.. soooooooooo hard and complicated..
Very good teacher. Very funny in a dry sarcastic way. Gives good examples but tests are extremely hard, although he grades with a curve (85 is an A). I would recommend taking him, you were learn a lot and if u pay attention to the little questions he asks before he starts lecture you will find out that some of them are the exam questions.
DR.AVART IS ONE OF THE FINEST BIO TEACHERS IN THE WORLD VERY HARD TEST BUT AND THE END OF THE DAY YOU KNOW WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SCI TO APPLY IT IN THE REAL WORLD. IF YOU WANT TO TAKE A EASY CLASS JUST TO GET A GOOD GRADE AND LEARN NOTTA,DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!1
I AGREE WITH A LOT OF COMMENTS, DR. AVART IS AN TUFF, BUT EXCELLENT TEACHER AND MAKES BIOLOGY FUN & AND VERY INTERESTING.
Yo, Dr. Avart is a damn good professor. He explains the material very well as long as you are paying attention and READ the chapters prior to class. If you don't you will get lost as you hear the info for the first time. Exams are tough because you need to thoroughly understand the concepts and apply them. Study the chapters/notes in and out.
He is a very good professor and he knows his stuff! You have to read everything he gives u! He will only help u and answer ur questions if u ask! Obviously he isn't a mind reader! Take my advice stop being scared to highlight ur text because u want to sell ur book back is it worth getting a bad grade? Oh yeah his tests are hard and YES study study study! Grow up!!!! Love u avart!!
It was basic biology and he made it interesting for all skill levels in the class (not easy). He's very smart, clear about what he expects and keeps the class involved by asking us questions during class. He made it fun to be in class though don't you DARE let your phone ring or eat in his class. :) I would definitely take another class from him.
He was a great teacher! I was intimidated by Biology, but he was very courteous in helping. His tests can be difficult but as long as you study you will receive a good grade because he grades with a large curve! I still remember much of the material and I can't say that about other classes!
Cranky, cranky, cranky. If you read the material prior to class, review for the exams utilizing the study guides he provides - - you will do well. He makes it obvious who his favorite students are. If you're not on the "non-ca ca" list, you don't exist. I did well in his class, but I would not take another class with him.
I had Avart last semester. I had considered his class to be one of the hardest As I ever earned but, having becoming familiar with the methods and materials other bio106 professors as a tutor, Avart is clear and his approach is well organized. And don't let his crankiness fool you. Unless you are disrupting the class, he's very amicable.
Great teacher. Very helpful. Straight forward. Exams aren't too bad if you study. Gives huge grading curve. 85% or higher is an A. Drop lowest exam grade.
Maybe because it was the summer n' everything moves faster, much faster than I am used to studying, but his exams were hard. They were difficult because he made questions so similar. His exams are more Reading Comprehension than Biology and it was a little sickening. I still did well, but I think his class/exams had the wrong focus, like attend.
He's the best professor at CCP. He's very well organized, clear, and straight forward. He's always available if you need help. You can't be late to class though - he locks you out after 10 minutes.
Terrific professor. Really well organized, straight forward, excellent teacher. Provides a big curve for his non-major courses, but is much tougher in his other classes. Liked him so much, I took another class with him.
He's extrmely by the book. He's fair and accurate. If you're more than 15mins late, you're not admitted to class, which helped with late comers disrupting the class. All quizzes and tests are taken from your notes and his worksheets. Excellent teacher!
The tests are kinda hard because he gives you 4 chapters per test and most of the notes you take are not even on the teasts. Do not show up 20 minutes late, he will embarrass you. Hes really nice, but you have to really dedicate your time to studying. I would take his class only if your not a full time student.
This is definitely a class where you cannot miss a class. I miss 1 or 2 and was a little lost, mostly because i didn't read ahead. I put in a lot of study time, which is a must for this class. I would take his class again. I felt like i retained the information pretty well.
He's definitely hard. If your going to take this class don't take any other sciences or math w/ it. He makes his test VERY complicated! Started off w/ 32 of us. Only 8 were left by the end, everyone dropped and I should've done the same. Ruined my GPA. Goes overboard w/ absences, takes off points even tho the college allows up to 4, he still takes points off. He made material more complicated when he's suppose to make it simple. Hope I never get him again as a professor!
Dr. Avart is terrific. He's a great lecturer, super organized, and always responsive to questions/helpful. I learned a lot in his class. He's a little tougher than some of the other professors since your entire grade is based on tests and he doesn't curve - so be prepared to study a lot!
Therough teacher. his expectations are high but reasonable. he is very knowledgable in his field and a skillful teacher. good for serious students. He helped prepare me for future courses. I would definately take him again. Great teacher but you will need to study to do well on his tests which are mostly multiple choice but require deep thinking.
I am not a biology girl, at least I thought I wasn't until I took this class. So, he's not easy. However, Its clear he's passionate about the subject. If you want to work hard for your degree and learn all there is to learn then he is the teacher for you! Theres No easy A's here, but a strong sense of accomplishment after completing this course.
Cool teacher. Easy test. Take good notes and pay attention in class you will be fine and make sure you go to lab it counts toward your grade . you will get what you earn
Awesome man and hilarious: however... tests are very tricky, essay questions are completely at random, No labs reports, (sounds good.. but REALLY ISN'T). Unless you're fanastic at biology youll do great in his class. Expect to kiss your social life away while taking this teacher:)Very passionate at teaching, but is brutal with grading.
So far at CCP I've had good teachers, however he sticks out in my mind. First day he seemed very strict, but he was just laying down the law. Other classes had students on their phone and talking. Thats not an option in his class room. If you arent in school to pay attention you should definitely not take his class. He commands your respect/time!
You probably won't get an A in this class. Dr. A is a great teacher and you will learn a lot, probably more than in any other science you take. But the exams are challenging, it is not enough just to know the material, you have to be able to apply it. If u want to do well you have to put in A LOT of time. Worth it, will prepare u for other sciences
Excellent professor who doesn't take any crap. Very clear explanations of difficult concepts. Tests aren't hard if you study every day. Gives huge curve where an 85 is an A. Most test questions come from lectures rather than the textbook, so don't cut ANY classes.
The best professor ever! Class is hard! If you want to have an easy A even do not think to take his class. Breaks down the information clearly! Has wonderful style of teaching! Study hard and you will learn a lot from his class. Love you Avart!
Crystal-clear, focused, and engaging lectures. If you have solid, college-level study skills, you will easily get an A. Exams are multiple choice, he drops your lowest grade, considers an 85 an A, and requires no lab reports or homework. The people who consider his 106 class hard lack adequate preparation for college work.
I studied very hard for this class and could barely maintain a B. His tests are very hard and I would highly recommend not missing any days or you will be very behind.
Dr. Avart is spectacular! He is not an easy A by any means, but come to class, do the work, and participate and you will be fine. His class is a strong example of where taking good notes and how you study for an exam pays off. He gives a study sheet for exam prep, but success comes from using his sheet as framework and writing out a study guide.
Avart is AMAZING! If u want to learn take him but beware he is not easy at all! but he breaks things down nd u r guaranteed to leave a smarter than b4 its his exams that really kick ur butt, but study hard nd u'll be fine if u want an easy A look elsewhere but if u want to go on to 109 prepared and even a little advanced Avart is ur best bet!
He is strict, but he is very humor. He speaks very fast, but very clear. He looks like tough, but he cares. Most of the test questions are easy, buy you need to really know the text to get an “A”. English is not my native language and I didn't learn Biology in my high school. I did what he told, tried hard and got an “A”.
Professor Avart definitely knows his stuff; however I don't think he is good for intro course of bio 106. He moves at a very fast pace, and has no regard whether his students fully understand the material. I don't suggest anyone that has not taken bio n the last 5 yrs to take his class.
I took the six week summer semester class (Mon-Thurs.) w/ labs twice a week - it was fast paced and fun. I enjoyed learning. A text book is needed, but the professor was always well-prepared with study guides, hand-outs, & projector material.
If you study and pay attention to what he teaches in the class, majority of the time it will be on his exams. He does not curve or gives extra credit for this class so there is no making up if you miss an exam or get a low grade. His grading system is kind of rough but overall, he is passionate about what he teaches.
If you show up to class, there's no reason you shouldn't get an A. If he doesn't mention something in the lecture, chances are he won't put it on the tests. Same goes for lab. He goes over the lab questions in lab, and those are the questions that show up on the exam. I didn't even need to use the book, but other's could feel differently.
Dr. Avart is a very tough grader. You are expected to prepare yourself by reading, and answering the prelab questions, but are not graded on this. You only earn grades based on exams. Tests are tough. He's firm and strict, but super fair. If you do the work and prepare yourself, you can do well. I learned a lot, and would take his class again.
A tough grader, he was clear but goes really fast. With all honesty the one thing i didn't like about him was that he has his choice in which students he likes and wants to help them and which students he dislikes and doesn't help them. If u want to do good just try extra hard make sure he like you, get on his good side for a good grade.
So disrespectful and mean well not to all students . I'm not sure what it was about me and the other student but he just didn't want to help us. And no I didn't disrespect him or anything but if I'm going pay for a class and i need the teacher help i will ask even if they don't want to help me. His disrespect made me cry but i still didn't give up.
Professor Avart is a nice and funny guy as long as you study the text and prepare you will do well. He doesn't give tests, he gives 6 exams as he crams a few chapters on one exam and you have to accumulate at least a 255 out of 300 to get an A. His grading system is different from most professors, but it is still clear. Like he said "you earn it"
Dr. Avart's a great guy, from teaching-to-his personality. He makes science interesting & easy! Plus, he's like a genuis so he explains things in many ways it's better to understand. He's funny, respectable, & just overall inviting. It saddens me that the semesters ending. Also, he makes the effort to remembering your name. That's Dr. Avart.
He is not a joke! .. He thinks that hecis teaching post-bac students... Test questions are brought from moon.., it never matched with his lectures. I will never take him again. The most horrible prof i have seen in my life! Though he looks chill, inside he is the toughest grader for you! Good luck.
Please save yourself and DO NOT TAKE especially for 123 apparently he's reasonable in the lower level bios but he was seriously the worst professor I ever had
Taking a major class such as bio123 during the summer was my biggest mistake, but Dr.A did not make that any easier. He lectured about a lot of stuff and yet I would leave the class feeling like I didn't understand a thing. Then on his tests it would be on stuff that you wouldn't even had bothered studying let alone him even mentioning it.
Avoid
I thought he was a great professor, and I thought his grading was fair. People had difficulty in his class, and I could never relate.
He is a good lecturer, but the later exams don't cover what he emphasizes in lecture at all, especially the final . Forces you to use an expensive online homework system which helps you little in exams . Syllabus contains a course outline where even the questions with * aren't covered. Has little patience toward any mistake and outside of class.
If your goal is to get an effortless A, Dr. Avart is not for you. But if you want to learn + get 100% prepared for BIO 109, do not hesitate. His lectures are clear, brilliantly narrowed down to what you *need* to understand. He breaks down the material to the essence of what you must grasp. Don't be intimidated by his big personality: he is caring.
I really liked Prof. Avart and his class. He has a lot of energy, and keeps you on your toes with questions. This constant review is very helpful for the tests. A few test questions are a little tricky, but all of the material you need to know is covered in class - no surprises. He has a lot of experience teaching and it shows.
This is the hardest I've worked in a CCP class so far. Which is in my opinion a good sign. A great professor should bring something out in you that you didn't think you had. I would say Dr. Avart did that for me. I am thankful that I had to work to get a good grade. I am thankful that he cared enough about the material to make it challenging.
the lectures and lab were good but the test was not on the material that we went over in class. Nothing i studied was ever on the test which was frustrating.
in simple words i wouldn't take him again.
study study dont count on his lecture only cus his tests have things that didn't get covered in class which was really frustrating.
If i could rate him a negative 0 i would !!! THE worst professor ever since i been attending CCP. His lectures be all over the place and so does he. His exams has nothing to do with we go over in class. I wind up dropping the class. I dont want any student to go through what i went through with Stewart. PLEASE save your time, money and energy!!!!!!
If you want to pass this class read the textbook. Everything that he covers in class is from the text he only adds a few things that are not covered in the book but they will be important as well. Dont rely on his presentations alone because they are only useful if you read the book.
Whatever you do don't waste your time taking this class! His test have nothing to do with his lectures and you'll be spending your entire day reading the textbook.
Professor gives 3 take home quizzes, you want to make sure you take them serious. Professor also uses mastering biology, you want to take that serious too that helps with your final grade. The test are so anal and detailed you literally need to read and make sure you understand. Also quizlet will be your BESTFRIEND. show up and show that you care.
Dr. Avart is a master of his subject and solid lecturer. He projects his voice and never drones monotonously, so you won't nod off in his class. He's got a caring personality for those who show interest in the course and concern for pulling up their grade. Doesn't assign much homework, but keep up on the reading and powerpoints and you'll do fine.
He is a very black and white type of person. It's his way or the highway. He intimidates students and just doesn't seem like he cares all that much about our progress. Although test questions are multiple choice, they can be extremely specific to things we've never talked about it class. Doesn't seem like he enjoys teaching.
His tests are very challenging, the key to passing them is to study study study. If you don't like to study a lot you won't pass his class. Other than that, his lab and lecture are very informative and displays a rigor that can be expected from a 4-year university. If you want an easy A, not for you, but if you want to learn you should definitely.
A lot of independent work required. Everything is there for you to succeed but you better be willing to spend a ton of time on this class. If you are, youll be able to do ok. If you pause for even just one second, goodbye!
