He over complicates everything and is mono-tone and puts every one to sleep
Guy's a genius. My favorite Professor yet.
Good teacher, very dedicated to his work!!! Learn alot, but he challenges you and attendance is kind of important
A challenging class, but definitley one of the most useful classes you will ever take- To put it simply, this class can easily make you twice as smart as you are now. A must for people interested in politics
awesome awesome class, opens your eyes to the world
very nice guy. most interesting class i have had in a long time. very helpful. i highly recomend this class
Gardner is a GREAT prof. He makes the lecture fly by and is very helpful when needed. He really takes interest in what he does and makes it interesting for the students. He is always in a great mood and is fun to watch ;)
Makes subject material very interesting.
Always in a good mood - makes the class more interesting, even if you dont care much for the subject. Makes the effort to meet with students even though he is adjunct and doesnt have an office, which is great. Best thing is, if you are unhappy with a test grade, he will go over the test with you, and usually give you a few extra points.
He was very interesting. He made some really complex theories easier to understand. He was funny too! I'm taking an upper division course from him next semester.
Very fun! His classes are interesting! He has a few quizzes and 3 big tests. He uses copy-paste off the quizzes for the test. If you are at his classes his is very direct about what will be expected and his study guides are very useful! I HIGHLY recommend his class, I am signed up for his pols 141 class in the fall and heard great things about that
fun, and cool.
He REALLY likes Aristotle and John Locke, he can relate them to ANYTHING. He likes to read the books in class, or has volunteer do it, this can become extremely boring sometimes. To get a good grade, go to his office before the test, his lectures are very scattered.
very funny guy. gets a little carried away sometimes, but the tests have some of those answers that are made up, so you can narrow it down even if you dont' know it. all and all i did like the class.
AMAZING!!!! i loved his class! great teacher. However tests are very hard. Attendance not required but much of his tests come from his lectures... Favorite professor so far but not an easy class to get a good grade in
great professor. also took him for 101. really knows and is able to explain the subject. the lectures are a little scattered but pretty good overall. attendence isn't mandatory but tests do have a lot from lectures on them
One of the best profs I've had at Boise State. He's a fun guy. Watch out for the Attendance quizes and attend class and study your notes diligently.
Fantastic Prof! As long as you attend class and write down what he says you'll do fine. I never opened my textbook and got a B+. just listen to his lectures, very informative and very entertaining. By far, the best prof I've ever had.
Amazing Professor. I was a CJ major and after i took this class i switched to pols. Gardner is a fantastic teacher and very intelligent. Go to class, write down what he says, and you'll do fine. I never had to open my textbook. I've learned more from this class than any other. Its not easy, but well worth the time and effort.
I've taken two classes from him and plan to take a third. Fun to learn from, VERY smart, and dedicated to the subject. His 101 class is the best. When I signed up for it I had no interest in Poly Sci, now I'm a tutor for it. The 141 class is heavy on thinking and I wish I had taken a philosophy class before but its all good in the end. I wish
It's rare that you can meet a professor who is this knowledgeable but not arrogant but Dr. Gardner is just that. If I may make a recommendation take his class but be prepared to read and think about what's being discussed. Also make sure and congratulate him on being the greatest Lockian scholar in the whole of canyon county.
Professor Gardner is a great teacher. He is extremely knowledgeable in many areas which shows through in his lectures. Uses great metaphors and anecdotes to make his points. You wont want to miss his lectures, they're so interesting!
Prof Gardner is an awesome teacher, his lectures are (for the most part) interesting and funny. He really does know what he's talking about. All your grade is based on are quizzes and tests, just go to class and take notes and you'll be fine!
Great teacher. No need to read the book. (Save yourself the cash) Take notes and go to every class. Makes it easy to remember through funny anecdotes and analogies. Very understanding on personal emergencies. Did not want to take intro class, but he made it a lot of fun.
Great Professor. If you attend class you will pass with a good grade.
You don't HAVE to show up, but I would recommend it. He's really insightful and you can learn a lot. He has two tests, two papers, three quizzes, and the final. Just study for the tests and use flash cards...he gives you a review the class before. Just listen and write down EVERYTHING he says. Other than that, he's super cool and it's not too hard.
A colorful character to say the least. Know your philosophy and become his best friend. Enjoy!
I learn more from sitting in his office than I do from his classes. I find it strange that he becomes much more focused and understandable while sitting with students in his office than lecturing.
Hard class, fun guy
He is a fun teacher. Isn't boring with the lectures. Go to class if you want a good grade. The book is practically useless. He gives you some hints for the test. The tests are a little hard though. Great guy. Leans left for sure although it was hard to tell at first.
Dr. Gardner is a wonderful professor. He is intelligent, funny, fair, and fairly decent lecturer. I'd recommend him to anyone.
He's off the wall, never staying on track. Very hard to follow and stay focused. But tests are pretty easy as long as you somewhat listen
He was great!
One of the smartest individuals I have encountered.
Mr Gardner knows his stuff, he is a very good lecturer, and has a good sense of humor. I enthusiastically recommend him.
He's fair. He's direct. He expects you to attend class and pay attention while you're there. He is incredibly smart and definitely commands the attention he deserves. He is hilarious, absolutely hilarious. Total genius. Go to class, take notes, study study guide & you'll be just fine. He's a fair teacher and loves what he does. Big thumbs u
He doesnt only teach philosophy,he is a philosopher. He's got the stuff in his head and he knows what he is doing. Great guy with a good sense of humour. My favorite professor ever. LOng live Mr Gardner!
His lectures are filled with information and are in clear outline format that he puts up on the projector. He posts them online afterwards. In discussion he's the most chill professor ever. He sits on the desk and talks to us about life, sometimes about a philosopher we read. He asks us most philosophical questions in discussion. Truly the best!
My favorite professor so far in my college career. His interest for Philosophy is abundant, and contagious. As long as you do your reading, participate in discussions, and attend class, you'll do well. I put a lot of effort into his class, but I enjoyed it very much, and received my first college A. If you need help, just ask and he'll be there
Dr. Gardner is great. By far the best professor I've had. He's always there if you need anything. He's helpful and wants you do do well. Love his classes and wish he taught a few more polisci courses.
First, let me say, that he looks like Anderson Cooper. SO HOT! But, it is not an easy class. You will do well if you attend class and read the required reading. No homework except reading.
Class seems really intimidating at first. Although there is a lot of reading, you read them together in class and he tells you what you need to know about each one in great detail. He is really interesting and he tries to engage students in lecture. Work consists of 2 tests and 3 short synopses.
Garner is an awesome Philosophy teacher, I would take more of his classes if Philosophy was may major
He is a good teacher. He does assign us very interesting books. He is not, on the other hand, pleasant to be around. He's very cold with his students and even makes jokes at their expense. The work was easy enough, but forcing myself to be around him was extremely difficult.
He makes lectures bearable, great personality.
Gardner is a classy professor of the highest intellect. Really, really smart. He doesn't use ppt, which is refreshing. He is open for discussion, which makes class more interesting. He is really really helpful, clicker quizzes once a week. TEsts aren't too bad, but you need to study. Not an easy class, but its college for christ sakes
Dr. Gardner is an excellent, intelligent professor. His lectures can be hard to follow at time, but if you attend class, take notes, and ask questions you will do well. He is very open to discussion and has a huge mancrush on John Locke which can be quite hilarious at times. Definitely recommend him and any of the classes he offers.
Very interesting class that highlighted the very human nature component in government. Enjoyed lecture. At times had a hard time following when he went off on his tangents. But, given the content, it is understandable. Appreciate the heart the professor puts in his teachings. Not an easy A, but a well worth one. Tests were a little difficult.
Very interesting to listen to. Always gives you a new way of thinking about the topic.
Don't be intimidated, he's a really nice guy and is very willing to answer questions. Most of the kids in my class hated him because he wasn't an easy grader, but I enjoyed that he pushed us.
if you do the reading things will be fairly easy. The worst part of the class is group papers (there are 2) but its required for all UF100 classes. Hes very interesting and very helpful. Never makes people feel stupid for needing clarification.
Dr. Gardner is smart. You HAVE to do the readings and yes, they suck. His lectures are all over the place but thats this topic. If you have always struggled with comprehension of philosophy this is not the class for you. Follow what he wants and you should atleast get a B.
Dr. Gardner is a great professor. Very accommodating outside of class if you need clarification. He covers dense material so you must ask questions. If there is one professor you need to spend time outside of class with it his Gardner because he is an awesome human being.
Gardner was my professor for "The Human Situation" and he was absolutely outstanding. He's extremely intelligent and easy-going as a person, approachable and interesting as a teacher. Sometimes I had trouble sticking with him through longer lectures, so maybe grab Starbucks on your way and you'll be set!! I recommend him for any philosophy class.
The class content was dull, but he made it interesting. Dr. Gardner is a fantastic educator with a passion for his subject. He alone made the class interesting. He did not like to share his own opinions and views because he likes to see the students decide on their own. Easy class with a helpful teacher. I highly recommend Dr. Gardner.
Gardner is first and foremost a philosophy professor. Any class you take from him will be from a philosophical stance. Good or bad, you decide. His grading is quite ambiguous and subjective. He gives vague explanations when you ask about a grade. I have unfortunately had to take several classes from him, hopefully this will be my last!
Professor Gardner is awesome. His lectures can get a bit dry. But he will clarify anything for you. He definitely works hard to help his students. Really great professor. I would highly recommend him.
Genius, genius. Not easy but why should it be. He is very nice and very helpful. Easy to approach and extends a hand whenever in need. He really knows how to show the value and importance of a subject. If you take POLS seriously, you must take this professor. The knowledge you gain from him is priceless.
I am took this course to fill in my schedule as I am prepared to graduate. Dr. S Gardner is by far one of the most intelligent and inspiring professors and or human beings that I have ever came across. He teaches in the political science department at Boise State but could easily teach most any other disciplines within social sciences.
The content of this class could have been very hard to digest, but Professor Gardner made the information very clear with his usually humorous and always wildly insightful explanations.
This class was sometimes hard to follow, but overall Professor Gardner made it interesting with his sense of humor and lively lectures.
What I really enjoyed about this class is that he had interaction with the class. So many teachers just give assignment and follow the book (very boring) but Gardner gives life to the class.
He's so knowledgable about what he's talking about that he often forgets that he's teaching and assumes we already know what's going on. You don't really need to take notes because he has everything typed up and displayed on a single powerpoint slide. Good luck staying awake in his classes. Also, he is anti-electronics. Not even laptops are allowed
Professor Gardner only gives 4 assignments the entire year. Two essays, a Mid-term and a Final. The Mid-term and Final are both short-essay questions. If you bomb one of the 4 assignments, there aren't any opportunities to make them up. He doesn't do anything to engage the class, only lectures. Doesn't give points for attendance.
Not an easy class, but beneficial. You definitely have to be able to think critically and be able to read hard text. I actually really enjoyed it and learned a lot. Attendance counts and if you miss lecture you will definitely be behind. Not hard to pass; you just have to pay attention and put effort in.
Super easy class, just do the summaries and you're solid
Gardner is seriously brilliant. Took UF 100 Human Situation from him, and his lectures were typically mind blowing.
Professor Gardner is a great lecturer. Be sure to do the reading ahead of the lecture. Don't sit up front unless you like to read aloud. Course workload was heavy but not difficult. Do the reading, turn in the work and you will pass. Attendance mandatory.
I REALLY like professor Stewart as a person and I'd totally have lunch with him or hang out, but hugely disliked him as a professor. Feedback is almost nonexistent so you don't know what you did wrong, and if you are confused about something he will make you feel stupid rather than dumb it down until you understand. Got a good grade though.
Stewart Gardner is the man. He is a very cool guy and is also a great professor. He is nice, intriguing, and good at teaching what he is passionate about. I have had him for a few classes (POLS and PHIL) and plan to take more in the future.
Dr. Gardner is not your typical political science professor. He is sarcastic, loves to troll, and is not afraid to say it like it is. If these are the types of human qualities you value, take his class. If you want the conventional, dry, uninspired talking-at-the-class lecturer, take another professor. He is simultaneously humble and critical.
This class was pretty boring, but Professor Gardner makes the best of what he has to teach! His lectures are interesting and he is passionate about it. He does little quizzes every week and you can usually use your notes. He takes attendance. You show up and do the work that is assigned and you'll pass! Professor Gardner is literally the best!
Professor Gardner was a hoot! He is passionate about what he teaches (UF100 TACC) and presented the material in a fashion that was educational yet entertaining. Lots to read, but in-class feedback is great. Of all the Professors for Climate Change, he's the guy that I'd want to be teaching my class.
+Very interesting, very fun to have a conversation with +Passionate and intelligent person, but still almost always agreeable +Very fair grading +Made a boring class somehow enjoyable +Do the work in class and at least pretend to take it seriously and you will at least get a B+.
Gardner is great in many ways. His lectures are brilliant, he loves what he teaches, he cares about his students, he's funny, interesting, and sympathetic. The UF classes are a waste of everyone's time, but he does what he can with what he's given. His expectations are vague sometimes, and his lecturers can get dry. But take him, he's incredible.
He seems to be very genuine but is obsessed with students not being on their cellphones and doesn't allow laptops. IS very precise on time, will keep you until the exact minute class is over.
His lectures include him talking for the entire 1hr and 15min, he will literally check the clock and if he has even a MINUTE left he will use it. He talks without taking breaks so it is hard to stay focused/engage. He also doesn't allow computers, even though he talks a lot and really fast... Thus making it hard to take detailed notes.
Dr. Gardner is a great professor! He is super funny, very nice, and extremely intelligent. If you take a political philosophy course from him, it is a lot of reading and a lot of writing philosophical papers but he will help you if you ask--he wants you to succeed. He's a tough grader (doesn't usually give 100% on anything unless its brilliant).
Gardner is a great guy. The lectures can be a bit dry but if you ask questions he is more than happy to clarify. Essay prompts are sometimes confusing but he will go over pretty much exactly what he wants before you have to write it. I've had him for two classes now and would love to take again!
Dr. Gardner is way more casual than he seems (not strict about attendance or due dates). There are SO many readings and papers due all the time. Either be ready to read a lot or to come to class unprepared (doesn't really matter, I did this every day). There are so many paper assignments. Class is only interesting if you care abt ethics or urban.
I enjoyed Dr. Garnder as a person and he provided interesting insights. Like most UF classes it didn't really touch on anything super important and we talked primarily about philosophy and ethics. The second half of the course was much more interesting. This class has an extremely heavy workload but he wasn't a tough grader.
Dr. Garnder is cool but he is very lecture heavy. We rarely discussed what we read in the book and I feel like I didn't learn anything about political science. If you already love poly sci this is a good class. If you are curious abt it maybe look for another prof. He's more relaxed than he seems at first and class was easy with 4 big assignments.
He is a very sweet professor. Also great one to take classes from if you're going into teaching because he does interviews for the ed program. Work load is consistent and due dates are clear. You need to do the reading, but it is never more than 15 pages at most, usually a lot less. Good at looking at multiple political perspectives not just his.
Professor Gardner is a great guy who cares a lot about his students. His grading criteria is clear and the course schedule is consistent. There are 2-4 readings each week that are required for the weekly assignment but if you are interested in politics youll probably enjoy them. He also does a great job of summarizing the readings in zoom lectures
For this class, there are a lot of long readings that you have to do for weekly assignments. There are no tests that are nice, but there is a group project that serves to be the final. He works hard to provide chances for students to engage and share what they think of the topic of the lesson and current events that connect.
Prof Gardner is awesome! He is so intelligent and has the best lectures. The class was difficult because he is literally so smart but if you ask questions and engage, he will help you understand without making you feel dumb or uncomfortable. He also truly gets to know his students and really seems to care! Taking from him again.
Gardner is a funny guy and genuinely cares to get to know his students which is cool. He has a lot of really good information but also a lot of pointless information he goes on about in his lectures. There was a writing assignment every week and then a few other bigger projects but that was basically it throughout the course.
Nice person, little bit boring classes. He mostly just lectures the entire time, so it can be very easy to get lost. Only assignments were a weekly journal and midterm/final. Nice guy and interesting material, just very boring lectures to sit through.
Gardner is a bit of a boring lecturer, and assigns a ton of readings. Be prepared for a large group assignment at the end, so pick good teammates as he grades as a whole rather than individual people for some reason. Not bad but not good either.
Very thought provoking lectures. I liked the inclusion of philosophy in the field of Political Science. Another thing is that it was hard to gauge what his actual beliefs were, which is a good indicator of unbiased teaching.
Professor Gardner is amazing! He is hilarious, a great teacher, and you can tell he really cares about his students. This class didn't have any tests which was nice however there were quite a few papers. He lectured every class but it was more of a conversation rather than being lectured to. I highly recommend him, he's great!!
Gardner's enthusiasm for philosophy and teaching makes his class something to look forward to. One of the best professors and role models I've ever had. If you have the opportunity to take his class I would highly recommend it.
Very well versed in his field; he's less inclined to Socratic teaching in a class setting, but is more than willing to engage with ideas. He gives great feedback and is a pretty funny teacher.
Serious, challenging class. There is so much to learn from Gardner. I take his class every semester.
Gardner is a gem.
He is a funny guy, and very approachable. Very obviously has a passion for what he lectures on. However I feel like his class was seriously held back by a lack of in-class engagement. His lectures are unfortunately painfully boring and always go over time. The coursework itself is not hard, and the workload is relatively light. Just not my style.
He was awesome very funny and easy to work with. He tries to make the lectures light and funny, but sometimes they are very long. He is very approachable and keeps an open mind. Personally, I loved his class.
Gardner's lectures are engaging, though a bit lecture-heavy at times. The workload is manageable with weekly readings and assignments. unstuck ai was a lifesaver for reviewing concepts and preparing for exams. Overall, a solid class if you're interested in political science.
Incredibly intelligent and passionate professor, as others have noted he clearly cares deeply about the subject he teaches. Class is very lecture heavy, which I personally enjoy.
Amazing Professor and class for someone scared of Philosophy. Doesn't require complete understanding of topics to be successful and doesn't have much homework. Would highly recommend.
