I think at times, he can be quite confusing. Sometimes the disorganization gets a little crazy, too. Overall, though, he's a really nice guy who is really helpful when you ask for help.
He isn't very helpful and at times makes you feel stupid.
Wiggles during lecture! Very distracting!
Very wierd guy! Quizzes at the beginning of every class. Exams are near impossible!!!
Hes suppossedly nice, but he never helped me at all with anything. He seems to smart for his own good. Very weird guy, can't lecture well, and I heard he owns his own micro-brewery (might explain jittery movements and loud enactments of animals).
Not exactly the best professor i've every had, tests are impossible... learn nothing in the labs and not much control over class
This guy is def. different. Extremely confusing but he can be helpful. His tests suck!!
he is very helpful if you ask for help.
Pretty quirky guy, but always makes himself available for help.
Horrible teacher!! Tests are impossible!
He will try to help you, and he thinks he's helping you, but in reality, he's not! His tests barely reflect his lectures. He grades on an awesome curve, only problem is that it's too hard to get into a percentage that means anything.
Really knows his stuff! Really interesting lectures. Willing for the class to go in a different directions than his planned lecture as long as on topic. Really cares about his students, but you really have to know your notes to do well on his test. I highely recomment. Wears fish shirts.
Not as hard as people make him out to be. Sure, his exams are very difficult, but the guy curves big time. Plus, he's genuinely a NICE TEACHER, which isn't the most common thing you can find. He makes himself extremely available, and his lecture notes are very indepth. He's a smart guy. Easy class.
Great teacher; I really enjoyed the class with him.
great professor, very knowledgeable in his field. he has a great sense of humor just get past his 'dorky' side and you'll have a fun time.
Very Thorough professor. really makes the material easy to get and available, and WANTS you to get a good grade. but you have to work for it, his tests are hard.
Dissapointed with teching techniques. Was the coordinator for the lab but manged to cause mass confusion. Should be more concerned with preparing students for future careers in medicine and dentistry than teaching us what bown pigment is called. Horible teacher but a nice guy. Tests were made up of ghetto materials. Got A inspite of him.
This class consists of alot of work, but the tests seem to be confusing. The labs really dont prepare you for the practicals. It did not seem to be organized too well, and a tough curve for really nothing...
He is a horrible professor, probably one of the worst.
an absolutely horrible teacher. He is so difficult, he misses appointments, he doesnt respond to emails, he keeps you in class longer that the period goes, he is just the most ridiculous teacher i have ever had. I wish you luck if you get stuck with this guy.
Great prof! The best! Uses really neat stuff like clickers to do on the fly questions - open book - open friend. Huge amount of resources on his web site. A lot to study though. Exams really straight forward. More math an I expected. Wear weird fish shirts
He's a really nice guy. He will help you if YOU ASK FOR IT. He does curve at the end without telling anyone. He doesn't want anyone to fail. You have to pay attention because of those stupid clicker questions that aren't a help. Before practicals, MAKE SURE YOU STUDY BLACKBOARD! He might have a few pictures on there.
he is the most HORRIBLE professor i have ever had... i feel so bad for all you bio120 students because you will want to pull your hair out at the end of the semester. good luck
Dr Baker is most helpful professor in the world. He goes out of his way to help you, even when he has billions of things to do. He will even help you when he is supposed to be setting up for lab. He is a very funny guy and cracks jokes nonstop. He knows his stuff well, and his exams are easy if you study. He is also a HOT TAMALE.
He is completely useless. He definetly has ADHD, talks about only fish and plants. If I wanted to go to med school to cure plants then it would be important. Final is impossible and is off a powerpoint presentation. Grades unfair and doesnt have same requirements for every lab section.
Whoever wrote negative comments about Baker is totally wrong. I would take this class over if I could. Dr Baker is extremely helpful and this class is not hard only if you make it hard. Very nice guy. I definetly am going to miss it. Tests are not hard, only hard if you dont study. And if you dont study, then you shouldn't be in college. best class
Dr. Baker is by far the best professor I have had in college thus far. He's extremely helpful and is a very approachable guy. He really cares about his students and wants them to do well. Don't let the negative comments scare you...you'll do fine if you study hard for the exams! The practicals are challenging, but Dr. Baker is always there to help!
I am the greatest. Stokes Baker
he's a really great guy, just in his lab will drive you insane. was the worst class that i had to go to, but he compensates for it, since he is a nice person. you would not take this class if you didn't need it...so goodluck and you'll make it through
Great professor overall, will work you to death though.
Bum teacher, should have been fired a loooooong time ago!
he is the dumb and dumber combined into ONE person. it is like being teached by a 7 year old; studying for his tests are a WASTE OF TIME - i think he just hits the keyboard like this "3857q93-85ualkfjsadf" for his tests! why the biology dept. makes him a teacher of mandatory tests??? i have NO CLUE
Dr. Baker is very smart and I think that gets in the way of his teaching ability. He is not easy to follow and very hard to learn from. If you have the chance to take someone else I advise you to do so!
Great teacher with a TON of energy!
HOT HOT HOT
He's amazing. Smart, helpful, a real professor! Keeps my interest in biology alive!!
too smart for his own good. he doesnt know how to break down information to students who are new to it.
very confusing
He loves his stuff and loves to teach. This is a lab class were I get to do REAL experiments. I can see why UDM's billboads say undergraduates are researches.
Professor Baker Rocks! He really tries to keep people interested. It is a little weird sometimes but I appreciate the effort. The tests aren't too hard if you study. He is my favorite teacher!
Dr. Baker is a really good professor and a really nice guy. You can tell that he really loves what he teaches and wants the best for all of his students. He is very approachable and always willing to help a student. It is possible to do well in the course if you prepare for the practicals. They are difficult, but possible.
He is very smart but that gets in the way of him teaching. He's very hard to learn from and even when you think you know all the information for the exam, it's way more than you expected and you usually are completely lost and feel like you know nothing on the practicals. I studied a lot and all the time and still couldn't manage a B on an exam.
He is passionate about his work, he studies plants. His exams, however, are impossible. No amount of studying helped, and his class was just extremely time consuming and hard. Choose a different professor!
He grades any assignment he can based on how well he likes you. He only cares about getting his promotion that he's been waiting for for years. He says the same jokes over. When the whole class averaged 40 on an exam he yelled at the class saying he wasn't going to curve it because it was obviously our faults. When the whole class fails it was his.
He sucks. I wish I would've taken bio lab with a different teacher. I am very good at labs but his class grade wasn't even based off of labs. He grades final projects depending on how he likes you. Do not take him. He will annoy the hell out of you.
The hardest class for any freshman in udm and the worst thing that you have no choice just to take this freakin class!
A very bright teacher, but not always the best thing to have. Has high expectations for what you should already know and gives the craziest practicals giving a picture of four slides that look exactly the same!! The only thing crazier than his exams was his enthusiasm. The man is so hyperactive and he makes the funniest sounds with his high pitch
Just another class!
Solid teacher- above average.
Baker always means well. Has high expectations, but gives students tools to meet them. Always willing to answer questions and help. Is a bit disorganized, but easier to handle when you recognize that his eccentricities may be the result of a social disorder. Wish I'd taken him for more classes.
He is very helpful. He is a great professor
Dr. Baker is all over the place. However, if you go to his office hours he is very helpful.
Realistic
scattered all over the place. i took this class in the summer so everything was clumped together. tests were the worst part about it. even when you study, its very hard to pass. he would clump two chapters together (everything was fill in the blank) with only 10 questions on each test which makes it hard to study for.
Dr. Baker is one of the most helpful professors I have ever had. Required many trips to office hours, but worth it in the end. Lectures are very confusing though, but necessary to pass exams because he gives important definitions needed for them. Nicest man ever!
This guy thinks we can do a bio project in one page who does he think he is
Awful prof... Scatter-brained, poor public speaker, exams are way too long. He would lecture and half-way through realize he was teaching the wrong subject for the day. Once, he came to class and forgot the exams so we took it the next class period. During every exam over half the class never finished in time.
I took him for Gen Bio Lab and he was terrible. He is a hard grader, and I often had to go back and fight for a better grade. He marked a lot wrong on tests that were right and it lowered my grade. Being an athlete, he didn't work with me and he never let me make anything up. DO NOT TAKE!!!
Awful professor. He never follows his syllabus and always has mistakes on his exams. Very scatter brained and his exams are always confusing. HE NEVER ANSWERS EMAILS. Avoid taking him if you can.
Mr. Baker is a very excited and great professor who wants you to understand Biology. If you are ever confused, do not hesitate to ask questions! Go to his office hours or stay after class to ask what you should study for any of the exams because he will guide you to what diagrams/big ideas will be included.
Best Professor, he is so nice and funny. Literally understand the powerpoints for the exam and you will do fine. The 2nd exam (probability) is notoriously hard but thats the only thing "hard" about the class
Dr. Baker is an enjoyable person to be around! He's funny and appreciates class participation. His exams are mostly easy (except for probability, thats a killer). He accommodates if you missed a due date for a good reason and curves at the end of the semester. Overall, solid class and a solid professor!
I dont know who interviewed this guy but he doesnt know how to speak. He says factorial as factoil, probability as probably and just literally cant speak in general. Hes very rude and has a bad attitude. Hes also very unorganized and will never answer your emails. He emailed our class and had 14 ERRORS in 1 email. He sucks.
This professor is incapable of clearing lecturing the material to his students and consistently makes typos and errors on all of his answer keys, homework assignments, exams, emails, and syllabus. He is very rude to his students and has trouble speaking. He tends to blame his students for a lot of his issues.
Would not recommend taking him
He doesn't know how to explain anything and gives no directions. He makes me feel so stupid because he doesn't tell anyone what they're doing for example we had homework and didn't say a word about it. He also said we have a quiz about vocabulary and there was only 1 vocabulary word on a 5 question quiz.
The worst teacher he does not know how to explain I left crying so many times because it was so tough
I really liked Ecology class. The material on the exams was the same taught in class. He is a great teacher. He explains everything well. Always willing to help during office hours or after class. Just review the PowerPoints, read the book and have patience because professors are humans too!
His exams don't make sense sometimes, the exams have typos in them. He doesn't really explain how to do the labs. Everybody in the lab seems to be scrambling around and struggling and sometimes he just leaves the lab and doesn't comeback. The quizzes he gives sometimes make sense but they have typos aswell. Save yourself and do not take him.
The best professor ever! So kind and genuinely wants his students to succeed. It is a hard class but if you attend all lectures, listen to the ones he posts online, and do homework before the exams you will be fine!
Dr Baker is a pretty laid-back professor which is nice until suddenly he can't seem to calculate your exam grades properly, leading to your score being off by upwards of 15 points. Funny how the guy teaching a biostatistics course can't seem to add numbers together correctly.
Don't get me wrong, he is a very nice man and enjoyable to talk to. But as a professor, it seems as though a lot is lacking... Extremely forgetful and has specific expectations of students and yet is unable to hold himself to those same expectations. He is very flexible and understanding, but his neglectfulness makes it hard to learn.
There are 5 exams and 5 take home exams. The homework is extremely helpful in prepping for the exams. The grading scale is higher, A = 95 or greater which can be frustrating. The exams, homework etc are not weighted. There are lot of points in the class which allows for more flexibility. Put in the work and you will be golden.
Dr. Baker is a very kind person, though very chaotic in his teaching. If you've taken a basic stats course in high school, this class will be extremely easy. He gives a lot of partial credit and is willing to help you whenever you need it. He is forgetful and doesn't spell things correctly, but it did not impact my learning personally. Great class!
He's a nice person, conversational and will answer any question you have. But, he mis-graded many of my exams, and his lecture slides/old exams are way easier than the actual exam. Also, the homework is way harder/different than the actual exam, so basically you don't have any prep for the exam. Don't wait for the day before; take another prof.
Very nice guy but does not know what he is teaching.
This was the worst class and professor I have ever had. He never had a plan and was very unorganized. It often took weeks for him to put in grades. I will never take this professor again and I advise the same to others!
If you value your sanity, avoid this class. The professor rarely checks email, messes up grading, misses/forgets classes, and delays grading assignments. While professors are human, it shouldn't affect students' learning. There are other professors offering this class—take it with them instead.
Dr. Baker is a good professor, so I am surprised by the negative reviews. He regularly checks in with us when he teaches a new concept and answers any questions. His slides have minimal typos, but he promptly corrects them as he lectures. This is a 2900 course, so you can't cram for quizzes and exams.
This was the worst professor I've EVER had. He's rude & dismissive. His instructions are vague & expectations are unrealistic. He doesn't respond to emails, and when we needed him the most during (& the week before) finals week, he disappeared on vacation & claimed he had no Wi-Fi. If you value your mental health or your GPA, do not take this class
Don't take this professor. He doesn't respond to emails. The way he grades makes no sense. we weren't able to take two quizzes worth 150 because he messed up. those were lots of points that could've helped our grade, but he doesn't care about students. He just cares about himself.
He is very ditzy, but a knowledgeable professor. His lectures are simple, and the class and work itself is super easy. He forgets to post assignments and give due dates which is really frustrating. He's pretty entertaining in class and really attempts to connect with his students. He has super open office hours which is a plus. Easy grader too.
This class was my 13th reason. He miscounted 10 points off my first exam and then when I corrected him he said it was a little oopsie. This happened for every single one of my exams. He also forgets outlook exists so don't even bother emailing him any questions either. Take anyone else.
