Always interesting. Never boring. Makes you think about life and religion.
Easy, easy, easy. Too much small group work, though.
loved him...very interesting
One of the best teachers i have ever had
He's interesting and I learned quite a bit about religion/philosophy. There are a lot of quizzes (2 or 3 a week) on a lot of readings. It's a lot of work, especially his 10 page final paper. But overall, he's a good guy.
a LOT of work for a 100-level class. I was uncomfortable we had to attend a different religious event. He does let you pick your own, but I ended up reassigned to witchcraft crap becuase there weren't enough people in my 1st group. You must be open minded
The class exposed students to alot of ideas. He did a terrific job in the limited time frame. The experience at a religious place was a great idea! It's important that students understand other cultures.
He is a really good teacher, he is funny and will always help you when you need it. He has a quiz almost every class period, and if you do the work (which is just some reading) the points just rack up in your favor.
He tries to cover way to much info in one course, but he does cover it well, and make it understandable, it's just way too much to remember! He is very nice, also. I don't agree with making us pay to go on a madatory trip. We have no money!
Great teacher, really knows his stuff. I thoroughly enjoyed his class. Lot's of reading but if you do it you will get an A in the class.
Excellent prof
Really cool guy that knows a motherload of information. Makes religion fun and is NOT BIASED. LOTS of reading
Stu is loaded with knowledge on EVERY religion on the face on the planet. Lots of little quizzes, but in the end most students have an A or B. I'd take this class over Philosophy anytime. Stu is the best.
Stuart rocks! He should get his tandem bike bronzed for a statue in front of Sutton. Excellent guy and excellent trips!
Stuart is a really good professor, but he grades things exceptionally hard. This is not a blow off class. If you are willing to do the work, take him. If not, sign up for another class. Lots of quizzes!
Really intelligent guy! Great class, makes the class very interesting. I loved his class!
Great guy...very interesting but you'll take about 2 quizzes a week (do the study guides, the questions are straight from them). Def better than any philosophy class and bet ya wont find a better prof:)
Amazing! Take him, you will love it!
Stuart is a great professor. He makes the class fun, so you learn the material. Lot's of reading but the quizzes were so easy.
He's very nice, but this class was sooo boring. I had to drink an expresso everyday before I went so I wouldn't go to sleep. He gives to many readings, also we had to make a glossary of words we didn't know in the readings, which we had spelling and vocabulary test on as if we were in first grade.
1 of the best profs! about 2 quizes per week but he gives study guides that give you the answers. a lot of reading but if u enjoy the subject def take him, u'll learn a lot!
Great professor who know's about soo many religions. Great personality outside the classroom and easy to talk to. Be warned the class has a lot of quizzes but you can decide how 70% of your grade is calculated in the end. I'm not taking a final for his class, instead doing a paper and game.
Cool guy and great teacher
One of my all time favorite professors. I took three of his classes and loved all of them. He keeps discussions interesting and involves students in learning about religions outside of the classroom. I spent a night at a zen retreat in eastern PA for one of his classes. Also you can tell that the subject has meaning for him beyond academia even though he is not really a practitioner of the various faiths he teaches.
Awesome professor! He loves teaching religion and knows alot about it. He gets really into it. He's so far my favorite prof at IUP. You take alot of quizzes and its alot of reading, but you def. learn alot.
Awesome professor, every freshman should take him and his World Religions course. He's worth it! Mostly he gives you quizzes every week and a lot of reading. But it's not too hard. You can ask questions before the quizzes if you were confused on some of the readings. Great, very approachable guy! Take him, you won't regret it!
Stuart was one of the best professors I have EVER had. His lectures are captivating (I was like a 5 year old at story time)and he gives you options to get a good grade. Overall he is extremely fair, intersting and fun.
I LOVE THIS MAN! Never did I think that I would enjoy taking Religious studies, but wow. His lessons are so interesting, and he's so passionate about what he teaches. He isn't biased - doesn't favor one religion at all. He is possibly the greatest teacher I've ever had for a liberal studies class!
He was a GREAT professor! I never thought I could be interested in a liberal studies religion class, but he proved me wrong. Very interesting class and he is so intelligent!! What a great guy and class! Take him if you can!!
For a 100 course there is a lot of reading (and writing too). Class can be a little bit boring at 9 in the morning. But Overall, Stuart is a great guy that knows what he's talking about and really knows how to get his point across. Most of the readings were actually pretty good reads. The quizes sucked but the class was OK in the end.
Chandler is a great prof. As long as you do the readings (which are only given every other week or so) and take notes you'll be fine. He also puts his notes on webct so if you miss class you can get them. Def recommond him for religious studies
This guy thinks this is your only class. He's a nice guy and he makes the class really interesting but he expects you to read alot. You learn later on to only read some things and skip others. I actually learned alot and I'm glad i took him.
Great Professor, declared minor because of the class. I learned alot and am happy I took this class. Dr. Chandler is a great professor, although you do read alot, this is college, so if your not down for reading , then go home. I would take another class from this professor.
Alot of reading for a 110 class. Good at explaining the diff. religions. Tests kind of hard with essays and short answer. If you read, take notes in class, and prepare before the test, you will do just fine!
Dr. Chandler is definately the best professor I have had at IUP yet. Although, I got a C in this class, it was my fault for missing too many classes. He is very fair and allows you to make up a lot of work. There are 4 tests, but you can replace 1 with an essay. His lectures are some of the most interesting things I have ever sat through.
He is very knowledgeable in what he teaches. He gets very excited and animated. His tests are somehwat difficult..but if you take the time to read and do the study guides you won't do too badly! I would defiently take him for world religions if I were you...field trips also!
Great teacher, really wants you to learn, class is fun, moves slightly too fast however, keep up and your ok
Excellent professor. I don't think there's anyone else who could teach me something as hard as Mandarin and still make it enjoyable. Highly recommended!
Awesome professor. He's really creative and helps out a lot no matter if you know the subject material or not. He gives a fair amount of work and expects you to be a college student. If you have an opportunity to take him for a class, do it.
This class was very challenging. If it wasn't for this professor I wouldn't have been able to learn about the US Constitution and Religion. I would suggest asking questions and participating in class discussions.
This man is a great teacher. I knows his stuff and can put it into words that people can understand. Be prepared for a class with a lot of work, though.
He's such a nice prof.He shares a lot of his stories and experience and attendance is not mandatory. If you miss tests or quizzes,he lets you make up to it.
He was extremely helpful and made learning Chinese enjoyable. I thought it was going to be super difficult, and it was. But it was defiantly worth it.
Dr. Chandler's class on Buddhism is excellent. I learned so much. Lots of reading, but interesting books. Class goes by really fast.
Dr. Chandler is my favorite professor at IUP. If you are lazy don't take him because he really makes you work hard. But if you do the work, you learn a lot.
Awesome prof. I learned so much.
He does make you work as others have said. There are 3-4 question quizzes every class that count as attendance. His tests cover a lot but he gives you a print out of everything on the test. Great and enthusiastic teacher. Makes a boring, complex class very interesting and fun. Definitely worth taking.
He makes class hard for no reason. This class should not have been as difficult as it was but he thought that we should all have to work extremely hard for an A. Out of all religion classes i took this one sucked the most. Exams became all essay and I didn't do as well simply because he didn't like my writing style.
Dr. Chandler is sort of a give and take professor. You have to take the good qualities with the bad. He's a good guy, very personable, very funny, very helpful and very interesting. His workload, however, is huge. He tests you on reading everyday and tells you, straight up, that an A in his class is not easily attainable. Hard, but worth it.
Dr. Chandler is a fantastic professor. He does make you work hard, but I learned so much. People who don't like him do not want to work. If you think getting an A should be easy, then don't take him. If you want to learn, take him.
I honestly considered becoming a Religious Studies major because I enjoyed Dr. Chandler's class so much. At times, it can feel like a lot of information is being throw at you, but it's never suffocating. He's really entertaining and outgoing, and I genuinely had a great time. Read the chapters, prepare for the small quizzes and you'll be golden.
Chandler is amazing. I have no other words. His lectures are so interesting, he really pushes us to think, and i ALWAYS leave his class feeling enlightened. You basically get to pick the things you do to make up your grade. He gives everyone a required 30% of the grade, then we choose the other assignments we want to do. NO TESTS (if you choose) :)
I really enjoyed having him as a professor. His lectures are interesting. You do use the books in the class all the time. Anytime I struggled, I went to tutoring and it was very helpful. He doesn't count attendance ever. His tests will be a breeze if you take good notes and listen. No homework, but there are 4 tests and that's how you're graded.
This class is unnecessarily hard. I took it as a prerequisite to graduate alongside my demanding major classes and it's proved to be one of my biggest mistakes. The class requires so much time that it severely detracts from other classes. Unless you are a severe A type personality with extreme organizational skills do not expect a good grade.
Essay questions on tests, but he doesn't grade them harshly at all. I got an easy A just by going to class and paying attention. He's a great guy and pretty funny. Very helpful in office hours.
One of the most caring profs I've ever had. He grades by tests only which is a blessing and a curse. As long as you read the material and go to class its an easy A. Very caring too. He clapped for all the seniors and shook everyone's hand after we handed in finals and wished us good luck on the rest of them. He made the class interesting and fun.
Prepare to read a lot. There are always quizzes at the beginning of every lecture based on the reqdings, but you don't have to take them all, it's usually a minimum of 8. An average of 40 pages a week to read. The class was very interesting, but there could have been more lecture instead of group work.
Dr. Chandler's world religion class offers a great look at the history and practices of six different religions. I found the class to be very interesting, and the tests were not that difficult as long as you do the readings and pay attention in class because the pics in the slide shows will more than likely be on the exams.
some things on the exams are not found in the book so attend class and take notes
Good professor first test scares you because no one does well but he adjust the test scores by weighting them requires a lot of reading.
Professor Chandler tries his best to make his lectures as enjoyable as they can be, he knows that no one is really interested in the course but he tries to make it as easy as possible for you. Tests can be complicated but you have to pay attention in the lectures and make sure to read the textbooks assigned.
Professor Chandler puts a lot of energy into his lectures, even if no one really cares. He values the material, and will attempt to help everyone pass to the best of his ability. His tests can be tough, but if you attend his lectures and read the material, you should do fine.
really great prof for the class. makes a somewhat boring class really enjoyable, and always available for help and advice
difficult !!
Even with the heavy amount of reading and lecture videos in this class the professor made the lecture videos more interesting and can tell hes very passionate about religion. He was very understanding with covid and made the zoom meetings optional, so you could watch the lecture videos instead. The tests arent that hard if you study for them.
Worst and hardest class I have all semester and Im a senior nursing major, so that says a lot. Unless you can read at lightning speed, you wont do well on his exams. Class started off super easy and turned into my most time consuming class. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND
This class was the down fall of my mental health. Unless you can give most of your day to studying the lectures reading the textbook I would not recommend taking this class. The most horrific thing about this class is the testing setup. 75 QUESTIONS in 25 minutes is simply unrealistic. Would NOT recommend!
Best teacher ever. If you want a professor who actually cares about what he is teaching, then he is the perfect professor. I got a unique and awesome perspective on religion and even though you have to give a decent effort, its worth every moment! Highly recommended
This professor is very passionate about religion and needs to understand that not all who take his class have that same fervor. You will need to be on your game during the quiz/test. 60-80 questions in 25-30 minutes??? Who does this? Again, he is very passionate and replies back to your submissions with great details as it relates to religion.
I do not recommend him he gives 70 questions on a test and you have 25 minutes to do it and then after that he makes you write 2 essays for the test, his lectures are very hard to understand and comprehend DO NOT GO SAVE YOURSELF FROM THE STRESS
I absolutely love being in his World Religions class. He had only 4 grades the whole semester (4 unit tests), but I feel he graded them extremely fair. He let us use our top 3 scores to be worth 30% each, and our lowest as 10% of our final grade. He also curved a few exams. EXTREMELY PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT HE TEACHES (which is why I love him).
A 110 level class shouldn't take up most of your time. Online format, had an at least 30min video w/ outline M-F. Reading on top of that. Dry lectures, but a passionate prof. 30question, 13min tests. Structured class. Can work ahead. Overall just too much to do! A required class unfortunately. Do not recommend.
Expected too much for an intro level class. Lots of assignments and exams are timed. 15 min for 35 questions and very difficult even if you took 5 hours out of your week to watch the lectures and take notes, which isn't even equivalent to a regular in person course schedule. So difficult as I am a nursing major and required with my 5 other courses.
WAYYYY too much work for an online class. 1 lecture and 1 outline due literally every day. Lectures can be anywhere from 15 mins to over an hour. Far too much reading as well. Not exactly difficult, but extremely tedious and too much work. Professor seemed like a nice enough guy, though.
Pretty good professor and very passionate about what he teaches. The only issue is that there is so much reading. Only a small amount of time to do quizzes and exams, which is honestly not enough time. Super nice and understanding though
He's a great professor, and clearly so passionate about what he teaches. Attendance is definitely mandatory because he doesn't post his lectures anywhere, so if you miss a class youll have to find someone with the notes. Use the outlines he provides too! Theyre so useful when it gets to test time.
Dr. Chandler was one of my best professors this semester. He cares about the class and the success of his students immensely, and brings lots of energy to the classroom to make it as enjoyable as he can. There is a lot of homework readings, but it's best to just do them because it helps you understand the material better.
Dr. Chandler loves what he teaches & cares for his students. Attendance is mandatory & partner work happens almost everyday. There are only 4 grades total for the class, with each exam having 1-2 essays & multiple choice. There is a good amount of reading but it helps you understand the material better. If you put in the effort, you'll do fine.
Dr. Chandler was a wonderful professor! He is a passionate teacher that cares about your learning. He is incredibly energetic, funny and encourages participation in his classes. The only grades in this class are the four exams, but he makes your worst exam only 10% of your final grade and the exams aren't particularly difficult if you study.
He is a really nice guy, but there is just WAY too much work for an online intro to religion class. There is a lecture to watch every single day of the week, and these can take up to an hour just to watch. Overall, if you have to take this class, it's not that bad, but if you want an easy class just to get credits, I would not recommend this class.
The work is hard to follow, he expects that everyone is following and understands what he's talking about. There's a lot of reading, and if you don't get it he doesn't really do much to help, besides telling you to go through the readings again. The test prompts are given ahead of time, but when you get to class you have to write it without notes
Dr. Chandler is an amazing professor. He does assign a lot of homework, but they're always interesting and are necessary for our discussions in class. He assigned 2 readings/worksheets each week, but we had no quizzes or exams. His lectures were very interesting and fun to go to. Be sure to attend class. Attendance is 50% of your grade.
i am taking this class for world religions and i'm taking the in person class but every single class all we do is go over outlines he assigns us outside of class and doesn't even cover the material on the outline he just skips over stuff and doesn't actually take the time to do in class lectures and just post videos of them instead.
all in all he's a pretty nice guy. he posts video lectures of himself that he won't go over in class so you have to be doing his classwork every day even if you're not in class, the course load is super heavy
