Made history interesting. Actually looked for class input on historical topics instead of just lecturing. Exams were reasonable; read the novels and sort of skim through the text book.
He is a really nice and takes a lot of internest in what he is teaching. He has everything outline and he grades on a fair basis.
Tests are hard!
I loved Prof Graybill so much that I have set him as my basis for comparision for all of my other professors! His lectures are interesting, the class is fairly easy if you do the reading. He is fantastic!
his eassy is very hard and midd term and finnal exam is very hard don't take him.
This guy is not easy i can tell you that although i did good on midterm and essays. Grade is based on 2 essays, 1 midterm and a final. No HW so that is a plus =). Very interesting lectures, likes to use funny examples. Very clear on subjects, you can tell he likes hist. a lot. I highly recommend!
Graybill is TOUGH. He isn't very clear in what you are permitted to do in prep for exams. Pay close attention to discussion on notecards. It is worth it, though. Genuine passion for his subject, one of the best instructors at SCC. Among my favorite teachers ever.
This class was fairly easy! Grade is based on 2 essays and 2 midterms. No Hmwrk. is collected so that's a plus! Exams are based on textbook questions which he derives word for word on the midterm. He allows u to use notecards to use on exam with answers to the questions. So read the books. got an A
He thinks hes teaching a 4,or 5-unit class. too much work, and he doesnt really teach things from the book in the class but makes you read all of it(there are two books to read)and tests are based on those books. Hes a good guy but a hard teacher who likes to brag about his status.
He was an interesting teacher. Has a passion for the subject. NOT EASY to pass though, so you have to be willing. Come to class all the time and take detailed notes. He is going to fill your brain with information. If your into history then I would recommend him, you will be interested. If not then good luck and just pay attention, you will do fine.
Most knowledgeable teacher ever!!!
Passionate teacher, very interesting in lectures. Dynamic stage prescence. No Homework. Use your note cards, and you're good to go. Loved him to death. Take this class if you're not interested in History. He is inspiring and extremely intelligent.
Feel like he should be teaching business instead of history;seems that he doesn't really care if you've learned history;he cares that you've learned to manage your life and money wisely. Large parts of lectures had nothing to do with textbook or history, tough exam. Don't take it.
Pretty chill guy, lectures often stray from topic. Read the book for the exams. Easy grader, as long as you get your main point across you will be ok. Come to class, take notes. Hes very interesting and intelligent.
He totally tells stories and random facts every lecture to try and put a little extra info into ur noggin. Just do all the reading and u will be fine. He let's u use notes on the test. Come on, how awesome is that? And there are only 4exams the entire seme
Tough, but enjoyable. Take this class if you wanna learn history-he always trys to make his lectures relevant to students. Great teacher.
i love his class. he just had some guest lectures and they were absolutely horrile!! i don't know maybe i'm just used to that tell me a story and compare it with what i have going on kind of teaching but i like it.
Lectures every single day. Sometimes they are interesting and other times...boring. At times he repeats parts of the lecture from the previous day. Plus the tests are all from the book so going to class isn't essential.
Great professor, tells historical happenings like a story! Very intersting and fun class. You will learn easily because professor makes it easy to do so. A+ instructing Mr. Graybill!
i hate history, but LOVED this class. I got an A+ in his class and it was soooo easy! Although there are lectures everyday, and sometimes they're not that interesting, but you can tell he really enjoys what he does. He tries to relate history to modern day life and he does it well. TAKE HIS CLASS.
Graybill has to be one the worst professors at Sac City. He consistently goes off topic and believes that he is part English professor. During his “lectures” he states here’s a new vocabulary word on some of the most trivial of the American diction. I actually believe that diction was one of his so-called vocabulary terms. He clearly stated that he
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRINLE. IS HE AN ENGLISH TEACHER OR WHAT???!!!! ESSAY AFTER ESSAY AFTER ESSAY! WHAT A WACKO!
no no no no dont take this class UNLESS? you dont care bout grades and just want to learn cause to his credit his bald ass is a good teacher just a veru absudly hard grader ****
Read the Book. Go to class. Those are critial :) and you will succeed. Graybill is a great professor, enjoys the material. His exams may be tough given the timelimit (especially if you haven't read) however managable. He grades based on content and understanding and is reasonable with grammar. He also offers extra credit on exams.
boring. he stutters a bit..
Graybill is so awesome. He changed my attitude towards history. He can be a tough grader but he really wants to see you live up to your potential. He stresses the importance of speaking and writing well, which is important regardless of what subject you major in. You will learn a lot! Don't take this class if you want to do the minimum.
He often goes off subject and his essays are extremely hard...not a great teacher at all.
He never stays on topic and repeats himself every single day about things that have no relevance to the subject. He would often get into arguments with an older woman in the class about stuff like, which is better ATM's or Credit Cards, and the whole period would be a total waste of time for the rest of us. Some of the students would just walk out
Took his telecourse class due to my work schedule. There is a lot of hw involved. There are approximately 8 essays and then there are weekly videos to watch on Comcast as well. Essays are semi-easy although I felt as if I was in an English class instead of History. Dropped class after a few weeks (personal)so I don't know about his exams.
He can get so sidetracked. I hate how he'll put up an outline for the day's lecture and we'll get through 2 out of 5 after an hour. He often repeats parts of lectures, multiple times. I feel like class time is wasted. He is very conceptual and not very factual- I can go a whole lecture without any notes.
Caveat Lector, I'm a history major. Prof. Graybill can get off topic easily, but in the lecture he says what he wants you to know for tests and essays without saying "Listen up dummies, this is gonna be on the test." More essays than I thought there would be, but it's college, not the gimme an A house. Fair but you gotta work for your grades.
Good teacher. Gives excellent lectures that make you think through the evolution of history, a bit long-winded though. If you pay attention to his syllabus, getting an A is all about preparation.
incredibly boring. he requires you to write essays and although it doesn't sound too hard on the prompt, he isn't exactly the easiest grader. a lot of redundancy when lecturing or getting sidetracked.
Prof Graybill makes lectures interesting and is a very fair grader. He is very helpful inside and outside of class. But this class is hard. It's an honors class so be prepared to work, but it's worth it. you learn a lot. If you dont have time to devote to this class dont take it.
Took the telecourse class. Very understanding teacher and helpful if you talk to him! Don't get behind on the reading that goes along with the essays (8 essays) and the video lessons! Don't procrastinate! Also, make the index cards for exams (3 exams including final)-- you'll ACE THEM! If you keep up with all the work, you'll pass!
Pro's:relates history to how it effects our world, unbias, extremely educated, kind. Con's:Tough grader, sometimes the lectures can be long.I took Graybill for an honors history course.I was incredibly challenged (3 midterms were given). If you need a professor that is entertaining, don't take his class (some people need that, and thats okay :D).
Graybill is THE BEST professor at Sac City. The class is not very easy because of the essays. But he is not a hard grader, and he values your effort. Just prepare note cards for the midterm and the final. The things you'll learn in his class YOU WILL NEVER READ IN ANY BOOKS. Because he read millions of them! He is EXTREMELY INTELLIGENT! SUPER PROF!
I've taken classes at a couple different community colleges and am now at UC Davis and Graybill is still one of the best professors I've ever had. If you are looking for a class that will challenge you and the way you think, perfect. He is NOT the professor to take if you are looking for to slide by without doing work.
Graybill is a great teacher, He is always available to answer anyquestions about the assignments and reading. All though since this is a telecommuncations class, there was not alot of contact with him except for 3 tests. This is not an easy class, lots of reading and ALOT of writing! Don't take with other time consuming class.
Great teacher for the telecourse! He's so understanding when it comes to grades and is there when you need him. He's a hard grader, I always got B's on my essays. He seems like an English teacher! But if you stay on top of ur work you'll do fine!
He's super passionate about history. His class is not hard it just takes a lot of work. READ ALL THE BOOK. I wouldnt come to class if he didnt take roll because he tends to talk about irrelevancies. He's really helpful though and grades easy. He wants everyone to succeed. If your lazy this may not be the teacher for you! I liked him! :-)

I did not enjoy his class at all. Everyday he would stand up in class on his pedestal and go off on tangents that had nothing to do with what we were supposed to be learning. At the beginning of class he would write an outline of the topics we were to cover that day, but ten minutes in he would go off on a 45 minute tangent completely off topic.
Even though this class was tremendously boring, it was one of the easiest. Hardly any HW given, no usage of the book, and only 3 exams total(including the final). He's really strict on attendance!
Great Teacher, He offers help constantly. Attend class and be involved.
Although class can be boring, Graybill does not do trick questions. The most relieving part is that you will know what is on the test. Read the book and make your flash cards. If you show up to class prepared you will pass.
Mr Graybill seems very passionate & knowledgable about history & it shows in his lectures (although he does sometimes repeat himself). He is very approachable & helpful but he grade essay's very strictly based on your writing comp skills so try to take ENGWR before u take this class if u can. Overall, I enjoyed his class & hope to take him for 311
Graybill knows his stuff. Defiantly not an easy teacher but if you come everyday and do your reading he wants you to get and A or B. He does go off on tangents, but that makes it interesting and shows relevance to current events.
he knows his stuff and keeps you interested. the class is an easy A if you are willing to do the test prep he recommends. the test questions are given to you before hand and note cards are permitted. he is approachable and if you weren't interested in history before, you will be after you begin his class. easy class for a strong writer.
So interesting.. He was constantly stumping our class. I love this professor. He is so intelligent. I absolutely recommend his class.
This teacher is great. Before this class i had no interest in history, but now i have at least a little. He does go off topic alot but proofs his points and has very good illustrations. Not much work: two papers and reading for the midterm and final. Take this teacher, he's the best i've had yet.
Graybill either like's to repeat himself or is getting forgetful. His class is not hard just REALLY boring.I think he tries to liven the class w/his profanity:( He's only teaching style is lecture and there is no HW or quizzes. Not neccesary to show up, just read the book and make cards.
Graybill is by far the most fascinating history teacher I have yet to have. He makes everything entertaining and so crystal clear that a lot of the material on the test you will already be prepare for as it being ingrained in your mind. Take this professor if you have an interest in history or learning about history.
This is not a history class; this is a "I'm going to lecture you about my opinion and ignore others" class. He slyly gives the impression that his opinions are what actually happened in history, which is discouraging as a person who wants to learn. If you like asking questions and building curiosity by voicing your thoughts, DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Professor Graybill is very attractive. i spent most of my time fantasizing about him his in class... i love older guys. but hes a really great professor!! he knows his stuff!! mwah!!!!
He tends to repeat himself and goes off in tangents alot, but he's helpful. He only lectures in class, no homework, one major paper, 3 essay exams, and attendance is mandatory but overall this class is extremely easy. If you apply yourself a bit you could get an A. Take him if you want at least a B.
American History 483 is the most interesting history class I have ever taken. I plan on taking HIST484 from him as well. He gives his lectures in a way that is very hypnotizing. You are unaware that you are learning because every day feels like story time. Never a boring class. Definitely recommend his class if you don't mind alot of work.
i came into this class thinking he was a hard teacher. the tests are strictly from the book and lecture and if you don't combine the two in the exam you may not get a good grade. but, overall i really enjoyed the class. he presents some good information the books don't tell you.
TELECOURSE = A LOT OF WRITING! 3 essay-only exams plus eight 600-word essays (1 due every other week). TIP: take advantage of opportunity to pre-write exam essays on 3x5 cards. Got B in the class (did not turn in 8th essay - may have been difference between a B and an A but it was end of semester and I was burned out!) He grades fairly.
Professor Graybill is unquestionably the most informative, accommodating, and compelling teacher at SCC. He has mastered the art of lecturing and knows what he teaches in concrete detail. If you like US history then you HAVE to take this teacher
Like this guy - very "college" oriented class - i.e. no busy work, homework, etc. Grade is based strictly off exams and papers (one due about every month). Exams are mostly lecture-based, so attendance is required to pass. Has some funny lines, curses often. His lectures add to the book, not repeat it. He teaches us how to apply history.
the class is easy, no homework, no quizzes, just one major paper and 3 essay exams. he loves to repeat himself almost everyday. you will hear about glass steagle about a million times. BORING CLASS. i pretty much hated it.
This guy looks exactly like William Hurt the actor, no joke. Took 483 and 484 honors History. Trust me I wouldn't have taken both semesters if I didn't think I learned a great deal. Teaches you how to think critically. Can be Redundant. He's Incredibly intellectual.
No one told me that this teacher lectures on stuff that's completely irrelevant to the textbook! Plus, he seems too distant from his students, personally. I dropped the course fast. If his lectures were like this, then what will his tests and essays be like?
First off, he assumes that you ALREADY have a good understanding of government and politics; he constantly asks questions in class related to them. Sometimes he goes so much into detail that it becomes off-topic & irrelevant to the class subject(U.S. History). Take this class ONLY if u already have a good understanding of Politics & US Government!
This guy is the worst! He keeps after class for at least another 5 - 10 minutes. His lectures have no connection to the book which you must read in order to pass the exam. Goes off topic a lot and elaborates on everything and repeats himself.
Graybill is a historian. If you're expecting him to talk about what you'll read in the book-throw that assumption out the door. He wants you to understand America and the system we have and question your "freedom." Makes you want to know more. Oh and college does require you to read and study-FYI.
This professor is an excellent orator and lecturer. I look forward to his lectures. Sometimes it appears he is digressing from the subject, but he always bring it back into perspective, so I wouldn't trust everyone who says he's off topic. Expect to read 500 Pages or if you are in honors, you'll read 1200 and write 6 essays.
One word to describe this Prof. WOW! His lectures are amazing! His lectures are somewhat different from the text book but relate to each other. His test involve 2 essay questions that's from the text and lecture. He teaches students how to be successful in his class, that helped me alot. Class is mandatory, easy class if you listen and do the work
I recommend him to History major since he is a human historical encyclopedia. Usually picks the exam questions most talked about in class. I feel he is lenient on grades if you show an interest and go to his office hours for questions. Close to what a UC history class would be like in difficulty though. Lectures more interesting than others!
This professor is not easy, but you will learn a LOT from him! He is very knowledgeable. He also treats students like adults and not high schoolers, which I appreciate. 3 essay tests & one research paper. The final exam is NOT cumulative. He allows notecards for the essay tests. Follow his rules to the letter, and you'll pass.
Most boring history class I have ever taken. His "lectures" are more of a rant then anything else. Also when it comes time for his "lectures" he will put three to five bullet points on the board that is going to "lecture" about and might only touch on one while the rest of time is a long rant.
Prof Graybill is a great techer. He really knows the subject inside and out. He will talk to you during his office hours at great leingth. One word of advice its easy to procrastinate in his class because he does not require homework Do the reading and incorperate quotes into your essay tests or you will score low. Overall a great teacher.
I never had any interest in history but he makes lectures interesting and engaging. MUST READ BOOK AND DO THE FLASHCARDS!!! they will help you enormously for the midterm/final. The flashcards saved my life & I got a B! not an easy B by any means, but listen, take notes, read the book & do the cards!
Fist off his so called lectures, aren't even lectures. He's always off topic. He rambles about random things and doesn't talk about things in the book. he's one of the worst teachers i've ever had. make sure you read the book otherwise your guoing to fail.o yeah watch out for his potatoes and mayonaise!
his lecture don't correspond with the book.he wants you to incorporate his lectures in his test but is very hard to do since they have nothing to do with each other. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. he will keep you over time and still cant finish the lecture. very off topic. does not talk about the past history but present history instead.
I have taken this teacher for 3 semesters, by far the best teacher I have had. Take notes even if you don't think it is important and you'll have to read the book. You'll see in the end how the two come together to form an essay. You will learn to think critically. Even though I lost my 4.0 w/ his class, i took another cause its awesome.
It's awesome that his focus is on working class history and that he connects current events to what's being studied. Sounds like a lot of people get that confused with being 'off topic.' I appreciate that he doesn't lecture about just what we read; I need context and multiple connections to learn material in class.
Wow, this class was boring, fell asleep almost everyday. Read the book take as many notes, you'll be fine.
I took his online course. But, it was ridiculous. He graded the first two essays, then he stopped there. In the last week of school, after the final, he told me he was missing my assignments. I sent them to him over and over the next few days. I was about to drive to his freaking house and hand him the crap, but he finally replied and said he had r
This class is awful! do not take this class at all! He rants on off topic, keeps talking 10 mins after class has already ended making you late for your next class.doesnt have power points just talks and talks and is all over the place with his lectures, by far one of the worst teachers ive had yet. dreaded every time going to that class.DONOTTAKE!
Easily the most challenging class that I have taken thus far. His class not only made me a better student, it also made me a better person. Prof. Graybill is without a doubt the smartest professor that I have encountered at SCC. His classroom feels very personal. He is a little pushy on some topics but it's because he has wants you to understand it
This was a real good teacher, the class had kind of a lot of work but real easy if you do what your supposed to. He allows you 24 notecards for the tests, so easy A on the tests if you prepare, then the essay is pretty big and requires higher level critical thinking. Overall an unforgettable teacher and class, I learned a lot, also about current.
Great teacher! He makes History interesting and he is very knowledgeable.
Before taking any of his history courses be sure to know how to write essays well. His lectures are more like storytelling so it makes his classes very interesting. He allows cheat cards for his exams. I received an A in his class.
Mr. Graybill is an awesome teacher! I learned so much from his class. He lectures the entire class time,so be prepared to take lots of notes. His tests consisted of writing two in-class essays. If you read the chapters and take notes then you will do just fine. He also allows note cards. He is one of the best teachers I've had. TAKE HIS CLASS.
Took Hist 311 with him, failed the first 2 tests, came to office hours every week from there on. Takled out the material, figured out what I needed to know. Earned a B final grade. Not an easy class tho, you MUST do the reading at home. Yes can can go off into who-knows-where in class, however its always interesting. Would take him again.
This class was incredibly hard to stay awake in. If you have problems with this, DO NOT take this class. Keeps you in class 10 minutes after EVERYDAY! Classroom is very boring and dull. And you WILL CONSTANTLY HEAR "WHAT IS THE MAIN THEME OF THE COURSE CLASS?" every single day to the point where you just want to punch something, or someone.
If you have trouble connection random material to what the course is actually supposed to be able don't take this class! I didn't take note the first few classes because his lecture had nothing to do with the readings then for the first exam, which consist of two essay questions, he ask us to demonstrate points from the reading and the lecture!
Challenging class. It will enhance your sills in time management and efficiency. I have never been interested in history and honestly rarely followed govement issues before this class. His lectures correlate current issues with previous history which intrigued me. If you are a hard worker he will reward you, if not, ya snooze ya lose!
let's be honest. If you are not a hard worker, do not take this class! Prof Graybill is an excellent instructor and knows the course extremely well. His class focuses more on the problem solving side of life rather than just fill in the blank and forget it all a month later. If you read, take notes, and make note cards, you will be in great shape!
Extremely intelligent professor. Fairly easy on the grading policy. On his essays, you will need to demonstrate high level of critical thinking and analyzing. Easy to contact for assistance via before or after class, or email. Don't listen to those students who say this class is difficult, it is do-able, you will just need to engage yourself.
Worst professor, basically sets you up to fail. Impossible to study for his exams. Horrible at lectures. You just sit there for 3 hours listening to him ramble on and on. You can make a bunch of flashcards for the exams, but you'll only use 2 of them for the essay questions, so you just wasted your time making flashcards you won't even use.
I like Graybill but he is definitely not the best professor in my opinion. Taking notes is not a simple task considering he tells you his life story every session. How does that even relate to what we are learning? It doesn't at all. I understand teaching from the book isn't the best way to do things but it'd help out some if he did.
Definitely terrible at teaching. Do not take this professor. Gives the same lecture over and over. Gets through about 1 chapter then puts 5 chapters on the test. I had to bust my ass studying to pass. He also has assignments on a syllabus that he never hands out and still expects you to know about. Does not use D2l. Do not take this professor.
All exams are based off of the book and all he discusses in class is random stuff that doesn't even have to do with the topic at hand. He leaves only one light on in the class which makes it extremely hard to concentrate and stay awake. If you want to teach yourself and show up for nothing than this is the teacher for you.
He gets off topic very easily and ends up telling the same stories over and over again, which can be boring. However, he gives you lots of options for research papers, and a way to prepare for all of the exams. The notecards are worth doing if you want a good grade. He also offers extra credit on exams.
He is a great teacher. If you spend the time to do the flashcard and time memorizing the date you will get an A. Easy class, attendance mandatory... A girl received a C because of her attendance. Don't let that be you...
Okay, he is arrogant and talks way too much about himself, but if you run into a road block (personal or academic) he is very thoughtful and flexible. Make an appointment with him and you will see his true colors -very willing to help students get through a difficult time. I liked him a lot but didn't care too much for his teaching style.
He's a great professor, just not very clear, even with the syllabus. There were times when he made the subject very interesting. Sometimes he goes off topic but it was still a great class
Funny guy. Learned history in a totally different perspective. Honestly, I never study but I still passed the class since I was a good writer. Study the chronology times and do note-cards, you'll do great!
I would not recommend this instructor. He does too much story telling. Very little discussion on class topics. 2+ hours before giving breaks. Tested on 4 chapters, but only covered 1. Most of the class eventually dropped. He did choose a good textbook. It would have been nice if we had used it. Practiced oppressive banking style pedagogy.
His lectures are entertaining supplementary information, so you MUST read the textbook! Tests and one essay are the only coursework, and they are taken directly from the book, so easy to prepare for. This guy knows and loves his history! I learned a lot, and gained an interest I never had before. I highly recommend Professor Graybill!
I really don't like this professor. He spends a lot of time talking about his personal life rather than the actual course subject. He goes off topic a lot and often repeats the same stories. It's really irritating because you mostly have to teach yourself from reading the textbook. I don't feel like I learned anything from him.
He is a horrible teacher and his lectures have nothng to do with History. He talks non-stop about himself. You have to teach yourself about history and read the textbook clearly.
He is a horrible teacher and his lectures have nothng to do with History. You have to teach yourself about history and read the textbook clearly. Do not take his course if History doesn't come naturally to you
Graybill is an amazing teacher. You'll learn a ton from his class. You have lots of reading to do though. If you make note cards for the tests and study the chronology tables (it's extra credit), you're basically guaranteed an A.
Don't take this professor if you don't like essays. Basically 80% of the class grade is essays. Lectures barely cover the material, then you get points taken if you don't include lecture information on exams. Cool teacher, but difficult. MUST READ WHOLE TEXTBOOK to pass the exams. Put in LOTS of work & it'll be easy, if you don't, super difficult.
Professor Graybill was incredibly helpful thought the course. If you pay attention and try in his class, you will do well. Opportunities for extra credit and option to do 3x5 not cards to help on the tests. Show up to class! After two absences, he drops your grade 1/2 letter for every absence after that. Nice guy. Incredibly intelligent. PhD...
Great teacher.
Run!I only took his class because I had no other option, but it was my worst experience in college. His lectures aren't related to the exams, so you will spend the class listening to useless info. You would have to read the whole book.Exams are essays, u can use cards, but is hard to know what he wants to give u an A. He lowered my 4.0 GPA
i have never liked history but he makes everything relatable to today and interesting. I learned so much and i like history now. If you actually listen to his lectures there interesting. But if you zone out then you will just fall asleep. Overall i would take another class with him. he offers extra credit on tests.
Graybill is extremely intelligent but donot take this clas if you just want to slide by. all tests are essays but he allows notecards. easy if you put in the work. learned alot from him. if i have to take hist 311 i will most likely take him again. he gives a lot of life knowledge in different areas that relate to history.
This is the best class however you have to work for your grade. Read the book, have 3x5 cards ready for test, show up on time, take lecture notes. You can not pass by just taking lecture notes. You have to earn your grade but he gives you everything you need to accomplish your goal. Yes test are essays however if you read the book no problem
I learned more about American History from this Professor, he teaches it with a passion which prepares you to be a better student at any four year State University
He is obviously very intelligent on the subject matter. Tests consist of extra credit and essays. You can use 3x5 cards. I personally cannot stand professors who ony stand in front of the class and talk so that is why I did not do well in the class. Get ready to read. Take good notes and show up to class.

His knowledge of history:Inspirational (but long winded), and shows relation to how history affects your daily life. Very clear on requisites; gives you the preview questions for all exams on day 1. Allows 3x5 cards during tests. That said, if you fall behind on reading and don't apply yourself, you are probably doomed.
Professor Graybill is an incredibly intelligent guy. He outlines everything in the syllabus: 3 essay tests, a final, and a written paper. Long lectures, but is always willing to help you with anything in the class. You will learn a ton from him, about history and life. Totally recommend him for required history classes!
Professor Graybill is very intelligent, funny and helpful. Gives you opportunities for extra credit. Study the chronology times and do 3x5 cards. I highly recommend Professor Graybill!
I LOVED this professor! Yes, he would sometimes go a little to far into one subject but he made history interesting! His lectured were so informative and clear! He gives you every opportunity to pass and is always there to help. I definitely recommend him if you need to take a history class!
You basically have 3 quizzes and tests are essays so there isn't a lot of wiggle room for grades. Consistently a really long-winded lecturer but all was interesting information, although very hard to discern what was important for notesquizzestests. I wish there was a study guide or review to know what was important.
Class met once a week and was unorganized. 1st two meetings: talked about himself. 3rd meeting: canceled. 4th meeting: canceled. 5th meeting: talked about himself and gave a quiz. 6th meeting: gave exam. The teacher did not review reading nor said what will be on the exams. Students are left with no directions but to read 4 chapters before exams.
Great professor. He made history fun and he's hilarious. There's alot to read but he lets you use index cards during the tests, which really helps. I recommend him if you are looking for a History teacher:)
I learned so much in this class. Great lecturer, very knowledgable and approachable. I admire his passion and how he brought history to life.
He does not talk about Historical events that are in the textbook; He talks about history and current events that have nothing to do with the reading. Somehow, you're suppose to relate his in class stories to the reading during your exams, which is impossible because his stories are all over the place. Good luck.
The grade u get is LITERALLY the grade u earned. Lectures aren't always related to text. Keep up with readings, it helps in the long run. Allowed 3x5 cards for exams but he has specific rules. xtra cred is usually date memorization. He swears. He's encourages you ask for help if you need it. Exams are essays only. MUST read ENITRE textbook to pass.
At first it was pretty hard to get what was going on in the class, but if you read what you're suppose to read and do what you're suppose to do, you'll pass with a C or better. His tests and quizzes are really straight forward, same format each time along with extra credit. Very inspirational. Respected by many students.
He's a nice person and professor as well! He might want you to do some extra works, he'll absolutely help you when you go to his office hour. He's smart enough to teach his subject, but sometimes, it is hard to catch his lecture. He wouldn't give you specific study guide for the exams, but if you do what he wants you to do, you'll get an A
Great professor! He always welcomes office hours and is very inspirational. Great guy too.
Honestly, if you don't like reading, don't take this class. The exams are based on the text and lecture, so don't miss the class. Professor Graybill really cares about the students and encourages students to go to him for help. It's an easy pass class if you do your reading and visit the professor a few times.
Professor Graybill is honestly one of my favorite professor's. His syllabus is very clear and he greatly encourages you to come visit him during office hours to receive help. You will have to read but if you know how to determine what's important and what's not then it won't be terrible. He lets you have note cards for exams
Phenomenal teacher. Knows what he's teaching, gives amazing lectures that don't overlap much with the book (idea's the same, but it's not redundant, so pay attention!), grades his assignments clearly, and is just a joy to go in each day and learn from. Definitely take a class from this man if you can, whether you like history or not.
You have to read the textbook to pass the class. Do all the notecards and fit as much information as you can for the tests and you'll get a good grade. He doesn't teach from a powerpoint or anything, he has an outline on the board and he goes off that. He has a tendency to go way off topic, which might take up the whole class period.
Graybill is one of my favorite professors, I've taken two of his classes. He really does whatever he can to make sure you succeed. People say he goes off topic, though, if you bother to pay attention, everything he says provides real context to the lecture. He's a wickedly interesting guy and teaches what you wished you'd learned in high school.
His class is good. He does talk a lot and sometimes it feels like its off topic. Do the 2-3 assignments on time, for the best grades. Read the chronology for the chapters for extra credit. It can save you! Study well for exams, and quizzes. Thats really the only things you are graded on. If you have questions about the lecture, ASK HIM! He HELPS!
Graybill is more old school with his teaching style, he doesn't use power points for lecture. He talks the ENTIRE class period and even takes up 2-3 mins after before he dismisses you. Take notes on what he says it will help later on. He takes role every day. READ the book, Study for the quizzes and test they are very specific in the syllabus.
Someone wrote "does not talk about Historical events that are in the textbook; He talks about history and current events that have nothing to do with the reading. Somehow, you're suppose to relate his in class stories to the reading during your exams..."Yes exactly, you're supposed to think critically! He is amazing! He is willing to help, ask!
His quizzes contained where information was found in the book, EX: what is the title of the chapter. And half were questions about the syllabus. It was a waste of money and not my definition of a college course. He lectures the whole class and make sure to read before hand. Lectures are good. Tests and quizzes are inadequate.
Take his advice on study habits at the beginning of term and you will do well. Has funny anecdotal stories and really helps you understand the sequence of events in history. I could listen to him talk about history all day.
Graybill helps you gain a better understanding of how history applies to current events today. Read the text book, do the extra credit, and do the 3x5 cards. The lectures are interesting and you will come out of the class more knowledgable than before. I highly recommend taking professor Graybill.
Graybill is an excellent professor. He gives a great idea of how history has influenced us today and really makes you think. Lectures can be difficult to grasp important details and exams are intense, but if you show up, read the book, and fill out the 3x5 cards, you will have a great understanding of the course. Very challenging, but worth it.
He is hilarious and quite loud in class. He makes history interesting. He wants his students to succeed and will meet up with you to help you out.
Exams were essays where you had to integrate lecture and textbook material, so you really need to take good notes in class AND read the txtbk to do well. Even his seemingly unrelated tangents during class turn out to be relevant, so pay attention and think before dismissing it as irrelevant. I didn't really like him at first, but now he's my fav!
Very challenging. Exams are essays over the textbook, with plenty of extra credit available. He wants very detailed and specific work, so get ready to read the hell out of that textbook. Lecture can get repetitive but is required for exams. He really cares about the class and expects a lot from you, if you put in the work you'll do well.
He tells random stories. You read about post civil war, he lectures about Sacramento for 15 minutes before side-tracking to talk about his family or politics. Not worth trying to connect the dots when he tells so many random stories per class that does not relate to the textbook at all.
80% of your grade is from 3 exams and 1 formal essay. It's hard to do well on his exams as he expects you to discuss textbook material and integrate his lectures in your exam, but spends most of the class lecturing about random stories that have nothing to do with class. He's a great person and wants everyone to succeed, but a really tough class.
He's extremely passionate about history and it makes for engaging lectures. You MUST read the textbook and make the suggested 3X5 notecards on the focus questions or you will not do well on the tests of which the bulk of your grade comes from. This class will probably seem overwhelming at first but stick with it and you'll get the hang of it.
3 quizzes on a 15pg syllabus, 3 exams in essay form, one 5pg essay on the book. Offers extra credit if you do well on the chronology, and do 3x5 cards for the exam. Overall, lectures are good but a bit disorganized. To succeed, read the book, remember his lectures because he'll ask on the exam, do all 3x5 cards and memorize chronology. Good Luck!
Professor Graybill is amazing and is really passionate about history. Class consist of 3 quizzes, 3 exams, 1 essay prep sheet, and 1 essay. All are simple if you read the chapters and use 3x5 cards to take notes. He highly encourages seeing him during his office hours for any help that you need. He also offers extra credit which is a plus!
Lectures every day. Lectures not related to whats in the textbook so you have to read and take notes on the book in order to do well on tests. However, what he lectures on is on tests. Lets you use cheat sheets on tests and gives extra credit based on how many sheets you do so lots on xcredit opportunities. No reason you shouldnt pass.
He's very funny, makes all his lectures entertaining even if you're not particularly interested on the subject. Essays make a huge portion of the grade so be ready to write. As long as you pay attention to all lectures, and read the text you will get an A. He goes on rants that sometimes make him have to rush through actual material.
Two essay questions per test. Must read textbook to write essays for tests. Gives good feedback from tests but is a tough grader. Gives extra credit, based off year of events. Good professor for auditory learners, and students who like to read. Class is listening to professor lecture, and writing notes based off lecture.
Just rants on and on about random things and never talks or teaches about anything in the textbook. There's a lot of self reading to do and expects you to remember everything you read. I REALLY recommend not taking his class if you're ready to not learn anything important and waste your time.
Hes a funny and passionate teacher. I was a bit confused on his grading style in the beginning. He does care a great deal about history and it shows. Just be ready to read and pay attention to his lectures!
This was an odd semester, in that we started in class, and transitioned online due to COVID-19. In person, the previous reports of tangential stories are correct. Online however, this was a very well built course, with tons of resources plugged into Canvas. I enjoyed the course material and found this to be one of the BEST online course experiences
Graybill is super passionate about teaching. Theres weekly quizzes that require reading the text. The weekly discussion posts are pretty easy, just make sure to use text citations. Theres 5 exams which are just essays but hes a fairly easy grader. He gives good feedback so youll definitely improve as the class goes on.
The course was online, he never lectured and only occasionally submitted unhelpful 10 minute videos each week. He didnt teach us anything. We had to read the textbook, watch videos, and synthesize it all on our own. He also gave us 2 essays, a discussion, a quiz and 35 pages of reading in 1 week! He has no respect for your time or other classes.
Hes clearly a little overwhelmed right now but this class is very interesting and hes got a really great diversity of material. The workload is pretty heavy, theres a lot of information to synthesize. Hes not amazing about pacing this class but Id attribute that to the pandemic.
The workload for this class is predictable-- reading and discussions every week. If that is for you, I would recommend taking this class. What's super awesome about Professor Graybill is his feedback and how much he cares. He took the time to get to know each of us in the beginning of the semester and gives really thoughtful feedback. One of a kind
he is now my favorite professor ive taken in the history dept. he teaches you so much, diversity and inclusion and historical accuracy (acknowledging the eurocentricism) are important to him. He goes in depth and really wants you to learn!!
Hes honestly a really good teacher but beware theres 4 exams, quizzes every week, some discussions, and reading 40 pages a week for the chapter. He gives really good feedback though and its not too hard I would take again!!
At first, I thought his class was not too bad but then I realized it was not what I expected! He gives a quiz every week that are not so easy. Then you have discussions that need to have 3 cited sources and when you reply to a classmate you need to include a cited source as well. You have essays for exams and he is not entirely a fair grader...
he is super awesome and I wish I couldv'e taken him in person. I took it for my history degree so I expected reading and lectures, online class, does a weekly video going over everthing. The modules explain a lot and what you'll be reading, The tests are open book, every answer in the book, four exams, minimum thousand words, super easy, use sources.
One of my favorite profs ever. He really teaches history from all angles. He gives great, clear directions and is available to talk to regarding anything about the course. One of the best setups for an online class. 4 papers, but if you follow directions, you'll be fine. Plus, he gives great feedback. He is one of the best!!
The Exams killed me, but the quizzes and weekly homework was manageable. The rubric is clear but hard to get a great grade, Graybill is a tough grader. I never got higher than an 86 for every essay and I had them reviewed 3 times by tutors on campus. All in all if you do the work and read the chapters you'll get a B.
Very political, criticizing other peoples political views without care.
Prior to taking this class I'd lost my passion for history but even though this class was 100% online, Professor made it so easy to enjoy history once again. He was extremely helpful and accommodating when needed, and gives good feedback.
Nice enough fellow. Didn't think the quizzes accurately checked content knowledge. Way too much reading. It wasn't just the textbook... it was all the add-ons. At least there was extra credit.
He is such a great Professor I would go to war for this man. He is so nice and he's always willing to help his students out in office hours and the amount of times he has reopened an assignment for me is a lot. I will say that the essay length was about 6-7 pages, but it's not bad at all and I would say that hes a really easy grader.
Such a nice guy! So much extra credit!! Great professor!!
He requires a chapter to be read weekly (mind you, they're like 50+ pages long) he doesn't provide any study questions to prepare for the weekly TEN question quiz, and in my opinion the quizzes didn't really even correspond to what we read in the chapters. It would be nice if he provided more insight instead of just going based off the book.
Graybill is a great professor who really makes history engaging, even in an online format. The workload is manageable, and Unstuck AI proved helpful for study prep.
Graybill was great! I have taken other history classes before and this was one of my favorites. There is a 20 question quiz every week, 4 essay exams and he offers 9 extra credit opportunities. This class was really easy, the only thing I will say is the chapters are very long. His lectures are great, he is really funny and makes them interesting.
The course was very well structured. A LOT of reading and videos to watch. 4 written unit exams that he gives very clear direction on. You can tell by his feedback he cares about how you do in the course.
