interesting topic, good lecturer, easy...but not reallly easy

good professor, sometimes boring, but well organized lectures
His lectures were sort of boring, but he did show videos of speeches for fun. His tests were tough, but if you study you won't have problems. His term paper expectations were very clear; students had to choose a foreign policy and answer his questions.
If you enjoy political science this is a great class, he is a very fair grader. Interesting class.
Professor Hill really tries hard with material that can be boring and tedious. His tangents are interesting and he seems friendly enough.
Lectures appear boring but if you actually listen they are interesting...adds video clips. Sometimes sarcastic, has his funny moments.
B/c of this professor, I now like a subject I used to dread. His lectures somehow make a dry subject matter very interesting. I would take any class he were teaching. A good guy and a good professor. His exams are not easy, though.
Awesome guy! So smart! I loved him!
excellent teacher...really makes poli sci interesting. course material is not hard at all and requirements arent overwhelming.
Great teacher. Hill keeps the class alive and really knows what he is talking about.
Great teacher! This guy is fantastic! I loved his class and I was so scared to take it. I may declare Poli Sci as a minor now because of him.
Awesome teacher! Lectures are clear and easy to follow. He knows a lot about the subject and you can tell he loves to teach. Relatively difficult, but great class!
awesome teacher!! you can tell he's really passionate about what he teaches. very easy to approach and grades fairly. really a fantastic professor
Very easy; he teaches his classes in such a way that makes the class seam much easier.
Great Prof! Really enjoyed his class. He has a great speaking voice. Reminds me of Tom Brokaw.
He is a great professor. I can honestly say that he is really easy to approach and he always offers to help out in any way he can.
Very engaging lectures and he really works hard to present the material that isn't very interesting in nature in an interesting way. Exams are very hard and you gotta do the reading, also make sure to make friends with the TA's ,most of them are very helpful in terms of what to study.
great lectures. the class can be quite demanding at times but still very interesting and good. very good sense of humor and always has a good clip to show.
Hill is a great lecturer. Very organzied, clear, and had a sense of humor. He also takes several aspects and relates it to current issues that students can understand. Class is very demanding... one midterm, 10pg Essay, Final... LOTS of reading, thats the class clear cut.
A challenging class that's well worth the effort!
Hill's course is very challenging (10-12 page paper) but he has good sense of humor and always finds some personal anecdote that makes lecture more exciting. Very organized notes that are easy to copy & follow.
Prof. Hill is great! He is extremly knowledgable about the subject and enthusiastic about it as well. Lectures at times can get boering, but usually he keeps the class engaged through related clips. Has a sense of humor as well. Not an easy class, but it is possible to recieve an A.
Prof. Hill is a great lecturer. He tries his best to engage the class, and the video segments can be interesting. Beware of a HUGE paper assignment (10-12 pages) -- It's a bit much for a GE class. Reading assignments are over 100 pages/week... I don't think many people actually complete them.
Good Teach.
great teacher!!!!
Prof Hill is a very good lecturer and knows what hes talking about. Very enthusiastic about his subject. Paper can be a bit hard but overall a good class
Prof. Hill is GREAT!!!! He is really nice and so passionate about POL. He has a great sense of humor and is actually very approachable! I learned soooo much from that class and although it wasn't an easy A it wasn't bad if you went to class and read. And he's cute! Two thumbs up!!!!
very inspiring, very clear. Just watch out for one of his TAs--Casie. If you get her, get another TA
tries to make lectures interesting with a few stories/examples. fair grader, papers were very structured
Prof Hill is soo hot, I enjoyed his lectures just cuz I could stare at him. He's hecka hot for a 40 year old. But aside from looks, he was a funny one and always made me giggle.
He is a great teacher. He's entertaining, funny, clear, and knows what he's talking about. His lectures are not boring and are filled with interesting bits. He seems like a very down to earth person and doesnt hesitate to help his students and answer their questions.
Hella good looking for a 40 year old. Hope my husband looks that good when he that old. Anyway, I LOVED HIM AS A TEACHER.
Great teacher, makes the lectures really interesting, plus he's kind of entertaining
Very good lecturer, incorporates media whenever he can. Papers were fairly graded, tests were reasonable. Read the book and pay attention in lectures and you wil get a decent grade guaranteed. Recommended.
Very good teacher..knows his stuff....must study for midterm !
Interesting lectures, full of jokes and interesting facts. He one lectuer on the deficit and social security that was particularly fun. His test are somewhat hard, but it is worth it.
Great teacher. He made political science come alive. Full of stories and jokes that have relevance to his material. Great guy, fair in grading, good material. You need to study for his tests to get a good grade and also to have an understanding of the material. Matt Weiss is also a great TA.
This guy is awesome. You should definitely take this class at some point while you're at UCD. He is really interesting and really knows his stuff.
This class really depends on the TA. My TA, David Greenwald, assigned his own readings and essays, and had no idea what he was talking about ever. The lectures are fun, clear, concise, and quick. The only problem is a giant 10 page paper at the end, but again, the TA makes a big difference.
Hill seems to be a nice guy... the most boring teacher on the face of the earth. I wanted to kill myself, granted the material was atrocious, but he was very unclear. His teaching combined with the abyss of material almost destroyed my soul...
Is a difficult class, however was made more so by the fact that the professor was extreamly unclear. You can figure out how to write the remaining papers after you fail the first. However he does offer a way to make up the paper if you do badly later on.
His midterm was super hard.
He is a sexy man
the class is interesting however it the books are not helpful, and i dont know for sure if all are but my T.A. only confused me more..the professor is good but its hard to get into this subject..well at least it was for me!
this class isnt too bad.hill's lectures were not too bad.the video clips were entertaining.theres a 10 page paper, but TAs grade the rd so you know where you stand on the scale. i would recommend this class.
good class... very good class
Hard class, but not impossible. You must go to office hours in order to get a decent grade-he's everywhere in these lectures and it very hard to follow if you don't talk one on one with him.
I had/have little interest in political science, so class was not exactly for me. Didn't read for lack of interest, so midterm/final/10 page paper were hard. However, I would recommend Hill if you find poly sci interesting. Friendly, knowledgable, approachable, and well prepared. He's a good man.
Prof. Hill is prepared for each class, definitely approachable, and highly knowledgeable. His lectures were powerpoint and sometimes it was hard to stay awake, but if you take some extra notes besides the main powerpoint outline and know them, you will do fine on the exams. LOTS of reading assigned that didn't seem necessary to do well on exams.
Very knowledgable, and presents the material in an organized, concise manner. I found the expectations, particularly in terms of the term paper, were a bit high for an introductory class. He tests heavily from the lecture, at least in this course.
Very good and clear professor. Not a hard class if you read the notes. Paper is a bit scary, but not that bad. uses his computer very well at lecture.. love the video clips.
Such a boring class. I was really interested in poly sci when i signed up for this class, but the professor was sooo boring, I barely ever attended class. His lectures were all over the place and a lot of his test questions came from out of nowhere. Try to get another professor for this class.
Great professor-- understands the material very well and presents it in an organized fashion. Go to lectures/discussions and do the reading and you'll be fine. His tests are about 80% from the lectures and 20% from the readings. Oh yeah, and his voice makes him sound like he's running from President.
Anyone with half a brain should be able to pass the class with a decent grade. He's an awesome and interesting professor. His lectures might seem monotonous at times, but try to PAY ATTENTION!!! His tests are almost completely based on his lectures. Otherwise, take his class... your political science experience won't be complete without him.
Mr. Hill's lecture style can be mundane and boring at times but his power points were decent. He often uses video clips in his presentations. The class has a midterm, a paper and a final. You have to have read if you want to do well on the tests, and I felt 10 page paper was a little much for an introductory class. But overall the class was decent
I'm sure he was a great lecturer with his booming voice over the mic but i found that the cadence of his speech always put me to sleep. the lectures i was able to stay awake through were great. if you're able to stay awake and take decent notes through his lectures and look them over as well as understand key points-you should do decently well.
AMAZING teacher.. subject matter is boring but if you can get past that it is awesome. He tries his best to make lectures interesting by adding clips from shows and he news. Really a great professor!
Truly an incredible lecturer! He has an amzaing voice, knows how to use his slides in an interesting manner, uses clips from the news, and is open to questions. There was a lot of reading that prooved to be unecessary to the vitality of the grade. Go to lecture, section, take good notes, and keep up with current events (he's a news junkie).
Very good class. He is a truly engaging lecturer, and a class I looked forward to going to every day. Only one paper, but you must study for the midterm and final. Most of information on tests came from lectures.
He has very entertaining lectures that involve current events. His tests aren't too bad either. Requires a bit of work. highly recommended
Great Professor! really knows his stuff and interesting lecturer, although TAs are grading you. Bewar of David Greenwald, horrible TA, doesnt seem very in touch with the class
Bad professor. Lectures are completely pointless to the class. Its all about the book, which is so incredibly dry that its almost impossible to read. The paper is ridiculous and the class itself is horrible. He is not good at lecturing and the class is simply horrible. Its the only C I've gotten in my entire life, which should tell you something.
Mr. Hill is very interesting. Having political science as my major, it was really helpful to be in mr. hill's class. however, if you didn't attend AP Government in high school it will be somewhat hard to comprehend the terms. i highly recommend taking it, especially if it's your major
He is an amazing teacher with extremely interesting lectures. Time flies quickly during his lectures and you're sucked into his world. I recommend anyone to take this class, whether or not they're majoring in Political Science. A really nice, and funny proffesor who brings his dog to class! Highly Recommended!
He is amazing!!! He shows videos during class which is interesting also, but if you enjoy political science then you will like this class. The multiple choice section on the midterm was pretty specific, but if you study you will be fine.
Read the book, go to class and you still wont know everything. Lectures are BORING. Online pwrpnts dont cover everything. Final was not cumulative. Not enough time for midterm. Multiple choice extremely specific, know current events (from test day as well) and every possible detail/vocab word. Essay q's were easier to guess what he would ask about
worst teacher ever. poor grading and unclear teaching. nobody gave him any farewell at end of class.
Really confusing class. His lectures were sooo boring, and more than half the class would be falling asleep, even TAs! The website for the text book gives detailed chapter summaries, which i read and then just skimmed over the vocab. terms in the book. I didnt bother reading the principles book at all, and still managed to pull of a B-.
A disappointing experience. Half of the time in lectures I had no clue how it tied with the assigned reading [which was a little excessive, by the way]. TA's did their best to help us study for the midterm and final, but they were just as clueless as we were as to what material was to be tested. He talks about his family a little too much, too.
decent professor. beware of differences between t.a. grading. my t.a was was completley horrible, and seemed clueless.
Great Teacher!!
Good professor. Not the most energetic man, but if you pay attention there is lots of information in his lectures. Not for the easily bored or tired, though. A lot of reading, the book is dry, but you can get by ons lectures if you pay attention. Would recommend to someone already interested in the subject. I can see why others would find it boring
Professor Hill was an excellent lecturer. He has a hint of a southern accent which makes the lecture that much more entertaining. He's not outwardly funny but has a subtle humor about him and his field. As for the class, It was challenging but entertaining if you are interested in government.
The lectures were kinda dry sometimes and its easy to fall asleep during class, but if u go over the lectures (he posts on smartsite) and read the book you should do fairly well. The class was fairly easy especially if you are interested in politics/government. The material covered was similar to AP US and AP gov in high school.
The reader was almost pointless except for a few multiple choice questions on the exams--I just skimmed and did fine. Exams are curved. Straightforward, a lot of weight on the paper so make sure to work with your ta. Read the book and go to lecture and it'll be fine.
I'm an average student who had originally hoped to major in Poli Sci, and Professor Hill's class really turned me away from it. He is a very knowledgeable guy, but lectures are prolonged and close to useless. His tests were very tough, and those that did well had information prior. If you take him, only buy the textbook and nothing more.
Prof. Hill was overall a very nice and funny guy. Knows his stuff! I warn you, you must be pretty up to date on current events in politics because he uses that material for the tests. 10 page research paper was quite time consuming but graded fairly. Soothing voice...try to stay awake.
TOTALLY Useless class!! Sci/Tech policy has a good ring to it--doesn't play out that way. Hill likes to hear himself talk and his study guides are complete garbage.... waste of tuition and time
hill knows what he is talking about. he seems like a great guy on the subject. there was a midterm, term paper, and a final. he was a bit difficult but on the other hand, he is a manageable teacher and has some humor in himself
great teacher with a great teaching style. He is funny, but at the same time clear, helpful and approachable. Not an easy class, but at the same time not overly difficult one if you read and attend lectures. I Highly recommend taking at least one class with Hill.
Overall a great teacher. In order to do well in his class you must do all the reading and know your current events because they come up on the tests. In his office hours he helps you if you dont understand. He has this really cute dog too
I did not enjoy this class at all, and found his exams to be terrible. They ask detailed information to the extents that one would consider irrelevant. Not to mention he does not provide a study guide so you know what useless material to study. It's no wonder that the class average on the midterm was a C-! I would not recommend this class.
If you went to class, the class was not bad at all. He was an interesting and passionate professor. I'm taking him again next quarter.
He's very intelligent but his teaching style doesn't match me very well. He tends to elaborate and spend a lot of time on examples, which made me lose focus in class a lot.
OMG! I attended every class, took a bunch of notes, and even studied so much for this class. On the final, he said the long essay would be cumulative, but when I got the test, I realized the terms were also cumulative. I ended up not writing on some of the terms and totally messing up on the essay because he doesn't ask clearly what he wants!
Lack of transparency in grading and very subjective grading system. Other than that great class, I enjoyed going to lecture.
Really interesting professor, pretty much what you'd expect for an intro to poli sci class. I really like this class, one midterm, one term paper, and a final. Would definitely recommend this class to anyone!
I was not satisfied with this class. Dr. Hill's lectures had nothing to do with the material we were reading about, and he often lost focus of his point. One of the textbooks he told us to buy had no purpose. He is not interesting, and i found myself falling asleep in his class.
Very interesting class, makes lectures worth going to if you are interested in political science
I personally thought Prof. Hill wasn't too bad of a professor. He tried to keep lecture interesting with current events and with stories... Overall I enjoyed him as a poly sci prof. Grade is based on discussion, midterm, research paper, and final. A study guide isn't really provided. my TA was great and very helpful, he grades everything too!
Common guys, Hill is super easy! Here is how to pull of an A: flip through the lecture slides so you memorize all of the content and main ideas, attend lecture so you understand ideas, and briefly skim the readings highlighting important points.First midterm: understand the distributional method in and out! Final: know all cost benefit analysis
A great teacher. I had a horrible TA. his final and his midterm have a writing portion. one long essay, and oe short one. that was annoying considering it wasnt an english class. and because there is a 10 page research paper that is somewhat a pain.
Lectures are not mandatory but i cannot imagine anyone getting a high grade in the class without consistently attending. Excellent professor. He is a bit monotonous but the knowledge he has on the issues he discusses is impressive. Comes across as very unbiased politically. Tests are graded hard.
Throughout my 4 years at Davis, Professor Hill has been my favorite professor I've come across. Although sometimes he isn't super clear, he is so knowledgeable, and if you pay attention to what he's saying, you develop a new understanding and appreciation for the material. I highly recommend him. He's very helpful and friendly in OH too.
I am not personally that interested in politics, but had to take this class anyway. Wasn't as bad as I thought. The lectures were boring, but were a good supplement to the readings. There's 2 books assigned The smaller one is bassically unnecessary. The exams are multiple choice, writing out definitions, and 2 essays. Fair, but lots of work.
Interesting material. His lectures were pretty dry, and he's not that exciting. Exams were standard difficulty, but you need to really study your book to ace them. No homework or quizzes; 1/3 midterm, 1/3 final, 1/3 term paper. He's alright. Probably wouldn't take again, though. You really need someone enthusiastic for these sorta socsci classes.
The material itself is quite interesting but the way Professor Hill presents the material can be a little confusing. He is very knowledgeable about environmental politics and has a lot to say, so if you take this class I suggest you go to the lectures because his slides are very very vague. His tests are quite lengthy so study up!
Very knowledgeable professor and interesting course material. Class is not too hard, but attending lecture is a must because his slides aren't detailed. Only downside is that he has a very complicated and elaborate way of explaining things that in reality are somewhat simple. Not a "to the point" type of professor. Overall, I enjoyed the class
The class was super interesting. I was fascinated by all the readings. However professor Hill is the most unclear monotonous speaker I have ever witnessed. Leave it to him to make a simple concept a 30 minute convoluted tangent. I wish I hadn't taken the class. Material is straightforward. He makes it confusing.
I am usually against talking bad about people but Professor Hill is an exception. AVOID HIS CLASSES AT ALL COSTS. Lectures are unbelievably boring, study guides are pointless and the mandatory 10-page-paper caused me to have a panic attack. He seems nice but he needs to revamp his teaching methods. My best advice is to record all lectures
This was one of the best political science classes I have taken so far. I was a visiting student from another UC and found that UCDs poly sci program is so easy. Everything in this class is really straightforward,he tells you exactly what he wants and the TA was really helpful. There is also a generous curve. Take this class,it was great.
A pretty good teacher overall. A bit monotonous at times, and slides are too vague for later reference, but very interested in his field, good explanation of concepts and their effects, lots of short video examples. Paper is doable, exams were fair. A bit too much reading, but go to class and you'll get the main points.
I felt so lost in this class when I didn't read the assigned reading before the class it was due for. READ BEFORE SHOWING UP TO CLASS! I got a 100% on my term paper because I went to his office hours and he sat with me for 45 minutes and he never made me feel ashamed for asking questions, he's really cool when you get to talking to him
Very smart guy who obviously knows what he's talking about, but he tends to ramble in lecture and if you want to do well, you really have to go to ALL the lectures and do mostly ALL of the reading, which is a lot. also the final and the midterm are mostly essay questions which come across as bafflingly vague if you don't know your stuff.
Easy class when you read the assigned readings. He rambles, but then again, he's very intelligent and approachable if you need any clarification. Best part of the class was the Ta Heather Z. She's one of the best TA's i've ever had.
Extremely clear lectures (take good notes because that's what his exams are based on). Nice guy, definitely teaches the material well.
Great subject and he knows a whole lot. Tests are part multiple question, and mostly essay.
I regret staying in this class. He can turn a pretty easy concept into two confusing lectures where he'll rumble and show unintelligible slides. All over the place. Will teach numerous specific concepts and examples, but will only test on broad general topics. Most people failed the midterm (I didn't and still think he is bad). Paper was too long.
Professor Hill is pretty chill and straightforward with his lectures. Go to class and do the reading and it was be an easy A. Go to your TA or the prof. about the term paper and they will tell you exactly how to write it; and you get a rewrite. Pretty hard to do badly in this class.
This Professor is soooo BORING! He's a nice man, but he is not the best professor. I hate his slides because they are tremendously vague and he constantly goes on rants, so the majority of the time I have no idea what we are supposed to be getting from his slide.
The class was boring. Only take if you are interested in the subject. 2 midterms and 1 paper. The paper you have a long time to prepare. The exams were different because you have to use what you have learned into actual situations and explain the outcome for example. I think he is a tough grader.
Professor Hill is a very nice man, and is willing to answer all questions you might have. However his teaching style is just so confusing, his slides are broad and the content of his lecture is delivered in a difficult to understand way. The 10 page paper wasn't fun and exams are long but it's not the worst class I've ever had by a long shot.
Hill is a pretty chill dude. His class wasn't particularly fascinating but he occasionally says funny stuff if you're paying attention. The paper is kinda rough but it's not the worst thing i've ever had to write.
