Hard
Dr. Moon is a really nice person. He cares for the students and tries to make sure students understand and learn the content. However, I won't say he is making it easier for us. Attendance is mandatory. Some parts are 10-20-minute video lectures, so you have to learn it by yourself, exams are not curved, and THE WEEKLY QUIZZES ARE HORRID
Professor moon is accessible outside of class and seems to care about his students. His class is HARD. First midterm average was below a 35%. No curve for exams either, so if you fail, you fail. Weekly quizzes are online but take hours and are very difficult. He is nice but this class is like a full time job, I don't have a life outside of it.
Worst class I have ever taken. Ochem SUCKS, but moon makes it worse. Weekly quizzes were impossible and take hours. Weekly reaction sheets take up too much time. U gotta go to class bc he takes attendance by worksheets. Exams are impossible and poorly curved. 20 minute video lectures to watch on top of class. Regular lectures not recorded either.
there is life before ochem B with Dr. moon and life after ochem B with Dr. moon. how i miss the life before. this is the typa class that you have nightmares about 40 years after you graduate. in fact, i would recommend dropping pre-med and finding a different career path if it means you can avoid this class. do not take under any circumstances.
Would rather eat glass than take this again. At least he's overall a nice guy so I feel bad giving him a really low rating. Class is impossible. If ur okay destroying your GPA (unless you study for at least 3 hours a day every single day), then take this class. Literally did not make a single B in pre-med before this and i'm probably getting a C.
WORST CLASS AT USC EVER. Moon's test might be the hardest ones you will ever take in your life. The tests all have averages in the 25's and no curve is applied to your final grade. Studying for the exams will make you hate your life more than ever before and even if you study you're still going to do so so bad it's not even worth it. GL CHARLIE!
If you are a premed and really care about your GPA, please never take ochem b with this guy. His exams ruined my self confidence and I have never been at such a low just because of one class. His first exam average was below a 35% and he said he would not curve the class. I don't think I will ever recover from taking this class.
There's no way around it - 322b is hard. Dr. Moon is incredibly kind and it's not his fault that the material is hard. With that being said I nearly had to drop the class because it is so impossible. No notecard, no curve, video lectures, weekly quizzes and rxn sheets plus lab. This is the hardest class I've ever taken. Buckle up.
AVOID AT ALL COST! Even though he cares about his students, he give ZERO mercy on the exams as they are incredibly hard and have no curves. He also rushes through the lecture materials so fast, his weekly quizzes and reaction sheets aren't bad but time consuming. Taking his class makes me question my life choices.
just dont take him.
Avoid this professor at all costs if you are looking to take CHEM322B. While he claims to care about his students, his exam grading is brutal and does not curve. He decided to take off points on the third midterm while the previous ones awarded points for doing the exact same thing without any notice via email or during any of his lectures.
New professor so still learning the ropes. I think Professor Moon is very caring if you make an effort to go to his office hours because he is very helpful during that time. Only thing is he doesn't post notes, so it's hard to get that information if you aren't able to attend lecture. In general a very hard class.
if you don't want to hate chemistry, don't take dr. moon. i had personal issues this semester and provided all of the documentation that anyone else would view as valid. he refused to help me after i asked for help and instead told me to find someone else in another class for the notes. speeds through everything and bad lecturer. DON'T TAKE HIM!!!
Unreal this class makes USC look embarrassing. He refuses to say averages although the lab ta will tell you: first test was a 29%. Super unclear about how grades will look at the semester and when you do ask he becomes very condescending pressuring you to drop the class. The only advice he gave was drop. Biggest USC regret was being his student
322 is supposed to be difficult since there's so much content, but Dr. Moon makes every effort to teach thoroughly and provide plenty of practice problems, though the quizzes are HARD. He is very kind/approachable, & office hours were very helpful! Exam averages are higher than what people posted (70 was 1 SD above mean), and he gives bonus points.
WHY WONT HE LET US KNOW WHAT OUR GRADES ARE? he tells us an "85 is an A", and then doesnt tell us how our grades are curved or projected grades. he was going to and then he didnt because he said it would "freak us out." thats how bad we're all doing in this class.
Professor Moon is genuinely my favorite professor I've had out of the whole chem series. The class is really hard, but it would be with any prof. He rly cares about his students' learning and gives everyone the opportunity to individually meet, which is so rare in large stem lectures. Also, so much extra credit and really helpful problem sets!
Was probably the most miserable class of my life, but he is a nice guy. He tries to be helpful, but his exams are miserable. The averages were very low, but the curve was generous, even though he won't tell you what you have throughout the entire semester. Get ready to dedicate your life to organic chemistry for one semester.
Dr. Moon was a pretty good professor for CHEM105A. His lecturing is super clear and he displays all the calculations clearly. The unfortunate thing is that he only posts the blank slides so if you want to redo the question you just have to remember the answer. You do have to show up and study for quizzes. Very accessible outside class.
Dr. Moon was the worst professor I've ever had. He makes you feel unconfident in not only the subject, but also as a person. He seems proud of the fact so many students drop the class and the ones that are left are struggling a lot. He seems nice on the surface, but he is very demotivating when you try to ask for help. I wish I never took him.
Imagine you are a deer that got hit by a car and keeps getting run over again. That is how this entire semester felt with Dr. Moon. Doesn't let you know your grade at all and claims not to curve. Brutal exams. Brutal quizzes. Joked about failing students several times openly to the class. Just save yourself the time and tears and don't take w him.
CHEM322B with Dr. Moon was difficult but as difficult as any other CHEM322B courses at USC. He is good at teaching difficult concepts. Keep up with rxn sheets, read material prior to class, submit in class work, prepare for all labs, and complete all quizzes. You need to put in the effort: reviewing and previewing. Make friends and prepare early.
I was searching my favorite professor here and I am sad that the reviews here are not great. Dr. Moon is a great professor who wants all his students to pass. He tries to help each individual during lecture. He really cares about his students and I am not sure why the reviews here are not good. His lectures are very informative and helpful.
Loved him! He's new but is funny, patient & understanding. Genuinely wants you to succeed. Course is coordinated, so all 105a lectures have the same materials & exams. 4 midterms + 1 final. Practice exams are SUPER helpful, exams are fair, and lots of assignments that help cushion your grade. If you took AP Chem, this will be a breeze.
CHEM 105a is a very time-demanding class but professor Moon made the experience a lot better. He tried to make his lectures more engaging whenever possible and his office hours were very helpful too! Only not giving 5 stars because there were a few times when I was still confused about the content even after talking to him about it for a bit.
Orgo is a tough class regardless of the professor, but Dr. Moon was very supportive and encouraging. Something so special and unique from other professors I've had is that he meets with all of his students individually and truly cares about your improvement. If you work hard and stay on top of lecture, the class is very manageable! Also, extra cred
This is actually for Chem 105b. Dr. moon is amazing! Thats it, thats the post :)
(No tag for 105b so I put it under 105a) Lectures were ok, no complaints there. Watch out for exams, I bombed most of them (class average was ~70) Even if you understand the concepts, exams are brutal. Some problems rely on earlier parts. Word problems are tricky if you don't understand what they're asking. Do lots of practice problems
Had him for 105a/b and thought he was a great lecturer. I didn't think he was a great overall professor. He doesn't curve and makes exams very difficult compared to what we've actually learned. Exams show problems you have never seen before. It isn't enough to know how to solve the homework/lecture/book problems. Group quizzes are terrible too!!
I had Moon for both 105a/b. His lectures were alright, but expects you to have read the textbook beforehand. Even though he says none of the questions are meant to trick you on his exams, oh yeah no, they were pretty tricky. The average was 50% on the second exam and he said thought we would have done worse. Be for real.
For 105b, prof Moon is a comprehensive lecturer who I would say explained the content well. That being said, Moon demands a lot of work outside class and has tests difficult beyond reason. Moon also refuses to post lectures online and deletes his notes after one day of being posted. If you want to throughly learn chem, take Moon, don't expect ease.
Put in the work because it would reflect your overall grade. For group quizzes Moon explicitly states that you can not rely on one another to carry. Lectures were helpful, you have to understand that certain things given in the problem may be given as something else and you'd have to work with what you've got, which tripped up people. He's awesome!
Moon is nice and helpful especially if you meet with him during office hours or via email. Exams were brutal. If you understood a concept, you still may not get it right on the exam due to the complexity of his questions. "No exam question is meant to trick us" yet they were made to trick people up. Guided reading and homework points were helpful.
He honestly had really solid lectures and explained difficult content well while not being too boring. Unfortunately, his exams were very difficult even if the work was put in to understand what would be on them. There were indeed trick questions and the average scores on exams were often low. Difficult but manageable, just lots of work.
Dr. Moon is a great person but not a great professor. Lectures are alright, but you will gain way more knowledge if you go to office hours. READ the textbook, as it explains stuff way simpler, and attend lectures for topics you don't understand. More test and group quiz questions are derivatives of the worksheet questions he explains in lecture.
Dr. Moon's lectures were clear and helped understanding. Go to his office hours, Dr Moon will carefully explain everything again if you didn't understand any content. He is known for his especially hard exams, but they are managable. Review homework questions and go to SI exam review sessions.
Dr Moon's emotions reflect the way he teaches (not showing work on a problem due to the actions of students in a previous lecture). However, his exams are hard at all and are very reflective of the amount of studying you put in. He grades fairly and even includes extra credit on the final exam. As long as you do practice problems, you'll do well.
Solid choice for 105B. Organized lectures, kind, approachable, good explanations, and HW & guided readings give you practice & bolster your grade. Some annoying things are group quizzes as unpredictable personalities can hinder overall group and slides are only up until next lecture. Tests require some connecting concepts but are doable.
Dr. Moon is a good professor; his lectures simplify concepts well. However, his tests are very difficult. He mixes questions from previous units with new material and includes topics not covered in class. He is sassy and won't answer questions if no one volunteers. Additionally, he only posts his lecture notes for one day, so be cautious.
Do NOT listen to the nerds saying this class is manageable. I made an A but to do so I was spending upwards of 20 hours a week on ochem class, homework, reviews, and labs (the week before the exam it was more like 50). I was averaging 40s-50s on his exams, which he said he didn't curve, so I believed I was failing until the very last week of class.
Worst professor ever for one of the hardest classes at USC. He bragged to us that we all failed the first exam and has the most unrealistic expectations on how to pass the class. Tests are super hard, nothing like any of the problems you see in class. Super unmanageable, worst class and worst professor ever. Seems nice at first but truly the worst.
Unpopular opinion, but I loved Dr. Moon. His lectures made sense (do the GRN beforehand), tests are doable and reflective of studying, and he's extremely helpful in office hours. I hated chem but he made it somewhat less miserable for me and I got to know him well throughout the sem. It's a lot of work, but if you put in the time you'll be fine.
(322a)-literally degrading and it's been 3 weeks. i'm so lost. forget about happiness if you take this class. i broke down three times today. his explanations for 3d images and spatial orientation is awful. not helpful, doesn't post keys, i'm so lost and sad , i'm switching to business i want to die.
Easily the Hardest professor i've taken at USC. he was laughing at us when everyone failed the group quiz and he openly admits his test are impossible. i would not suggest him even if he was the last option.
Okay, so he is NOT the easiest professor by any means. However, he really is a very nice professor and does his best to help you understand the content. You will learn more about o-chem with him than with another prof, he really goes over the material in a detailed manner and his lecture notes are the best.
I love him. Icon. He is very fun but a lot of work and studying but don't be stupid and you will be completely fine.
Dr. Moon is a good lecturer but tests were very hard with low averages. Group quizzes were a nightmare if you had partners who did not study. Had a bit of an attitude towards the class. Add all of this on top of lab scores and it is a hard class to get an A in.
Chill guy who helps out a lot during office hours. He teaches well most of the time and has a good course plan that keeps students on track. he's gotta stop doing calculations on his phone calculator tho. His tests are on the harder side, but if you do the textbook problems, you should be fine.
Moon is a nice person but a very mean, inconsiderate, and uncaring teacher. This man wants his student to fail. He said that his final was cumulative, and made the entire final on the last week of class(it had about 3 chapters). I love that he is passionate for chem but he needs to realize we are not PHD students. His exams are unnecessary hard.
Best orgo professor out there. There is no one like Dr. Moon. Must take this class if u want an easy A. Gives lots of extra credit in his exams.
Super amazing 322a professor! Very nice, funny, and charismatic. Very helpful outside of class. Seems like he wants you to succeed, as long as you try your best. Quizzes and tests are always reasonable and reflective of his problem sets/practice problems he provides. SO MUCH EXTRA CREDIT! If you want an easy A, take his class!
Super kind and inspirational lecturer. Very understanding and willing to help out. Lectures usually cover how to apply our knowledge to problems, more helpful than textbook stuff. Easy A if you fully understand how to do the problems and homeworks he gives out. Tests/quizzes were alright. Only bad part of this course was the lab, lecture was chill
Moon is one of the worst professors I could have ever asked for. He can teach well but the exams are brutal and often cover material mentioned in one lecture. Even worse he teaches material through videos that you have to watch before class, if you have questions watching the video you don't have the ease of asking him in class.
This is for 322A: He's a better gen chem prof, and a horrible ochem prof honestly. His exams are extremely hard and you genuinely have no ease. The final was supposed to be cumulative and it only contained material from the week before... mind you he jammed packed 4 whole chapters into that week... you have better luck with kyung fr
(322a) I had Moon for 105b and 322a and he's def better in 322a than 105b. Ochem itself is hard to understand but he explains it pretty well and I do like his teaching style. I will say his exams are extremely difficult but he does offer bonus points on exams as well and offers extra credit. I will say tho, Kyung will probably be easier than Moon.
Professor Moon is a great lecturer! He's available outside of class if you have any questions, and even though his exams are difficult, your homework points accumulate by the end of the semester, so they help bolster the grade! His quizzes are also great because they help prepare you for the exam! Stay on top of the material, and you'll be fine!
He was not a good professor. You can tell he started scrambling towards the end when we covered several chapters in one week at the end. Not only that but he tests on niche material covered only once on some random slide somewhere. Other reviews on here that say he's good are his favorites, if you expect that, be wrong he very clearly has attitude
chem322a never been so happy to get a c in a class, this class was that brutal the exams in this class are insane
do prep. keep the pace. if you dont get something, do everything you can as fast as you can to understand content. do all work. tests are hard. he posts previous tests so use those to practice. fine lectures but this is a class where effort is directly correlated to grades (usually). get ready to have no social life during this class.
failed every single midterm but still ended with a B- bc of how generous the curve was+all the extra credit I received during the semester. honestly his exams aren't that much harder than kyungs (have looked at them side by side) AND we were graded on more things than in kyungs so honestly would willingly take chem322b with moon
This is for 322A He's a good teacher - his lectures were comprehensive, and he walked us through how to solve problems. However, he's not transparent about the curve at all - he does not tell us how the curve is during the semester, so you have zero idea what your standing in the course is until it's over. My midsemester grade was a B+, I got an A
Personally, I really enjoyed Dr. Moon's lecture style and course structure. Yes, there can be a lot of busy work outside of class (GRNs, Worksheets, HWs with lab work), BUT it really keeps you accountable/stay on track with the content and balances out your grade. I truly recommended him for CHEM 105B; he's so supportive and a great professor!
I don't care what u guys say about him but he is a goated prof. I swear this man made chem lowkey fun.
I actually like him for 322a because his teaching style is very methodical. Every week I know exactly what needs to be done. O-chem is hard no matter who you have so be ready to put in the work, especially before midterms. He does group quizzes the week before so you know how much you need to study. Content checks (unlimited attempts) help too.
His lectures are concise and helpful because he uses the same monologue for every similar problem he solves. The types of questions on exams are the same as the types he puts on the lecture slides. Yes it is a lot of work, but if you do all the practice questions and write down the types of problems he could ask, you're guaranteed above a B.
Dr. Moon is a GREAT lecturer. Honestly one of the best chem prof I know. Although there is a lot of work to turn in, that is his method of getting you to learn and understand the material well. Tests are challenging, but you will do fine if you study well. attend every lecture and you will get that A
moon is actually a really good lecturer and he explains everything well. while there is more work you need to submit i feel like overall the amount of time and effort you have to put in for moon vs the other prof is the same. it also means you get more chances to raise your grade outside of exams, which i really liked.
Dr. Moon is my favorite professor at USC. His lectures are always interesting and easy to follow. I actually learned to enjoy chemistry especially the last midterm concepts and I hate chemistry. A lot of work but it helps prepare for the exams. Study EVERYTHING. He is an amazing professor and his office hours are extremely worth going. Sweet!!
Great lectures, hard exams. I honestly SUCK at chem but I did the HW, practice, textbook problems, old exams/quizzes and went to his office hours 3 times a week and was able to get an A-. He gives lots of extra credit (20 points) + on the last HW assignment 3 points extra if u get 5/5. He drops 2 HW assignments. Hard class but doable
Dr. Moon really wants everyone to succeed. His class is structured and everything is exactly what he puts in the syllabus. Opportunities for extra credit, fun TikTok references, very easy to follow if you try.
Dr. Moon is an incredible lecturer; he goes over so many examples in class and a lot of practice problems to prepare you for his tests. He is so sweet and open to help anyone. His tests were honestly a reflection of the work you put into the class so do lots of studying and practice problems!!
nice guy. brutal exams and grading
Lectures were very structured so knew what to expect every class. Exams often had topics that were "briefly" learned so make sure to go over lecture slides thoroughly. Overall, enjoyed class very much and would definitely take again.
His class can be a lot to adjust to, but his class is doable if you put in the work. He is always open to help students. Exams are really difficult, but with a lot of practice they're doable. Really nice guy
He was okay, but exams were incredibly challenging
Dr. Moon knows the challenges ochem faces and counteracts them by providing his students with tons of support. He explains challenging concepts really simply, provides tons of practice sheets/problems, and has lots of office hours. This class is not easy, but you gotta put in effort to use the resources Dr. Moon provides. He is also funny
Very short with students. Organized, but he won't accept questions sometimes so that he can stick to the lecture schedule. Tough grading, barely any partial credit. Last two chapters had no worksheet or problem sets and were more biochem focused. Expected knowledge because it was related to his PhD.
Got a PhD in chemistry at USC when he really need a PhD in empathy
class structure is the main issue - midterms/group quizzes every single week for 8 WHOLE WEEKS before finals - stacks up if you're in other stem classes. doesn't record lectures/no zoom, mandatory in class worksheets so you kinda have to attend class even if you're sick but class isn't even worth it because teaching is subpar. tests are mega hard
It's 2nd semester o-chem: this class is hard. But Moon is an amazing teacher - he teaches the subject in a way that I truly understand the subject rather than mindless memorization. The exams can be excessively difficult and he can be quite petty. But he explains things so well, hence the 5. Would not take again though lmfao.
The most brutal ochem professor there is. Got an A in the class but sacrificed all my other STEM courses. Avoid at all cost!
My favorite professor ever he is an incredible lecturer. It is a lot of exams and a very hard class, but necessary if you are pre-med. No other lecturer will teach like him I highly recommend it he is very clear and fun and teaches you content other professors will not. Take Dr. Moon if you can.
Easily the best prof I've had at USC--clear and concise lecturer and intentional with everything he does, so as long as you pay attention and do the required work you'll do well. Exams are set up so you absorb the content better and there's always an abundance of resources to study from. There's also significant opportunity for extra credit.
Not the hardest class, but not the easiest.
Not the hardest class, but not the easiest. Each midterm was only 6% of your grade so it wasn't too high stakes; a lot of outside work you had to do though such as guided reading notes and weekly practice which basically made lecture mandatory . I will warn you he is a VERY, VERY creative test maker—take that how you will. Final was easy though.
Very good prof with clear and helpful teaching methods. Will NOT post lecture notes so either go or get them from someone who does. A lot of different grading components so keep track. Lowk rlly funny but very straight-up which I appreciated most times. Practice problems are key for success. Quiz groups random so don't depend on them.
Ppl who have "A" as their grades before the week of may 14th are lying. Every exam had a D average. It was to the point that he didn't do mid semester grades for us (he did it for 105b and 322a) because "I'd be giving out a lot of D's and F's". This class is ridiculously hard. Exams are really abstract. Take Kyung his averages were 100x better.
There is just so much work its overwhelming, and he designs his exams to target specific concepts. At least I know I REALLY get chemistry. He's a good lecturer, funny in class and straightforward which I appreciated & I liked how other participation helped boost my grade. However, wouldn't recommend because of the sheer stress & WORK! im not premed
I really liked Moon as a professor for the organic sequence, but teaching style not for everyone. As long as you are average or higher for test averages, you will be fine. Gives out extra points on exams. Class is already hard itself, but he gives TONS of practice materials which help. He is clear with what is on each exam. Office hours help a lot.
awful experience
This guy is hilarious. Love his lectures, he really does care about his students. Responds to emails very fast. He is also very clear, hard to not understand. Provides lots of extra tools for support.
If you took Bertolini or Kyung for 322A you will NOT be ready for 322B unless you were locked in. Moon is engaging and actually gives a sh-t that you know what's going on. Don't get me wrong, this class is HARD but that's bc the material is insanely difficult. He breaks it down WAY better than the other profs, I would've failed w anyone else
i really enjoyed his class!! out of the 105a teachers, i think he prepared us the best for tests and did not make the exams too difficult. provides a lot of resources for practice problems and does examples in class throughout his lectures. super funny and receptive too, def recommend
Amazing lecturer, funny, and was good at explaining all concepts. He has a lot of soft points that help your understanding and are relatively easy to earn.
The lecture worksheets were helpful and helped me better understand the concepts. The exams were fair, and he had a clear syllabus that was easy to follow. He's such a fun lecturer and silly little guy. He also makes not going to class a realistic option, essentially saying that you make your own choices and can make up points in different areas.
10/10 easy class. I think I went to 5 lectures total this semester.
Dr Moon is a great teacher. Hands down. No notes.
i was TERRIFIED taking chem322a with moon bc of the reviews but i rlly do think hes a great prof!! u rlly just gotta put in the work but as a premed student that shouldnt be something surprising . hes an amazing prof, SUPER ACCESSIBLE with office hours. rlly reccomedned making reaction flashcards and memorizing mechanisms + guided reading notes!!
322A: Moon is an amazing professor, you simply have to be ready to put in the work. I genuinely would take this over Kyung any day bc moon is a great lecturer, so incredibly accessible and caring outside of class and super responsive to email. Tests are hard but literally just do what he suggests and you'll be fine. Lots of extra point options too.
easy lectures, easy exams. lab portion is difficult because of reports, but lecture with moon is clear and easy. take this one.
Lectures mostly focus on doing practice questions, learn concepts before lecture. Gives lots of cushion for ur grade with HW and other assignments. Exams were easy, but I did take AP Chem. If u took AP Chem and scored well, this will be a breeze. Even if u haven't, just put in effort and you'll be fine. Exam averages were consistently ~80%.
Moon really does his best to make lecture as learnable as possible. You will have to do readings and lecture outside of class but he loads bright space with worksheets and examples. Tests really reflect whether you've mastered or are just proficient. One of the best professors at this school!!
This is a challenging class with a significant workload, but it is manageable with consistent effort. Exams were not bad if you studied and were engaged throughout the semester. He is an excellent lecturer, very approachable outside of class, and brings humor into lectures, which makes the material more engaging.
Great lecturer w/lecture focus on practice problems and super funny! Lectures help w/HW and pre-lecture quizzes. Rarely used textbook bc there are helpful videos. HW is sometimes lengthy but not bad. Tests are super fair. I sometimes forgot to do the pre-lecture quizzes and turn in worksheets, so just be on top of it!
This course is a breeze if you go to lecture and do the homework. Taking high school chemistry and being decent at algebra helps. Solid amount of padding. Graded based on 3 midterms and a final, lecture note participation, weekly homework, pre-lecture quizzes, and lab work. The work/effort is reasonable, although lab is another story. Lots of OH.
Dr Moon is an amazing teacher who clears basics and delves into harder topics with precision and ease. He sets 3 at home quizzes and a HW every week which are a big percentage of your grade (easy points) and take max 1.5 hours to complete. You won't regret having him as your professor, he's funny smart and caring.
