Great teacher, funny stories, not too hard of a class. I really reccomend him.
Great lecture, right off the top of his head, easy to work with.

Good teacher, but pays attention to sligthest mundane details. Better know who "Turnip Turner" was. Watch out for TA's

Outrageously boring class. Goes off on tangents at times. Not too hard but you have to have a really serious attention span.

This professor tests his class on material which is irrelevant to the course matter. He spends half the class talking with other students about non-related subjects, instead of discussing the course material. His tests are inappropriate .
ok, i recommend not taking this class...no matter how much you study and how good your notes are, the tests are SO hard and totally irrelevant to the course. i survived euro hist by checking out his super hot TA the whole time.
All he does is talk to two people in the class and does not focus on what we are supposed to be learnig. Impossible to follow in class
if you ever come across a test question with "stupid" as one of the multiple choice answers, go with it no matter what!
sooo bad!!! when he says the test is on chapters 4 and 5,you better know chapters 1-3 and 6-8 too. he lies. you should also make sure you dont know any of the historical events of the era you study, as long as you know the pop culture of that time period, you're set.
This man gives horrible tests. He is a horrible human being. I'm in his class now and wish something would happen to him so we get all A's. He lies, the tests aren't on what he said they'd be. He is old and wrinkly
Very nice man, BUT he is a horrible teacher. The tests are hard and not on anything he says they will be on, or anything you even heard of before. Don't take this class.
I had professor Smythe a couple of semesters ago and thought he was pretty good. All you have do do is listen to his lectures and take good notes from them and study. He adds more than just a textbook story of history. He is bias toward the british, but c'mon he's british:what do u expect!?
just take really good notes and go to the TAs office hours. the questions can get kind of random though
He talks to the front row, and asks them questions. Once they answer he comments to them and moves on. He doesnt make anything clear, his accent is thick and he mumbles. The only good thing was the paper. Have your own outside knowledge of history, it will help on tests, becuase they are random.
He teaches a 100 level course like its a 400 level.
worst professor ever!!! learned nothing, talks about things not related to course...he should go back to britain and drink tea.....or retire alreadyaasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfadsd
Smythe's tests without a doubt hard and impossible if ypu don't study. Hist notes are great and adds lots more than just the textbook view. Sit towards the front of the class for more participation. Just very interesting lecturer in general.
Right now I have four A's and one D. Yeah, he's the one who gave me the D. He is impossible!
he's a great teacher, i learned a lot and really enjoyed the class. but, the tests are very very hard and i don't think he gives any A's (so far i haven't met any1 who got an A w/ him), but the bad grade is worth the learning
pompous ****... hard tests... has favorites
Good teacher. Got the info across to someone who's terrible at history... he actually made it interesting.

Rough accent, teaches to front row, love the term paper for this class however.
I think the problem the other students that commented on Smythe had is that they essentially look for classes where they don't have to do work to get an easy A. They think that because this is a big history class in a lecture center that it should be easy, when in fact it is, if you put a minimal amount of effort into it, smythe is a really nice guy, the tests are fine if you study the night before, everyone needs to chill.
goes off topic in lectures, has favorites, confusing to listen to. tests are very specific, and the essay assignment is very vague
The class itself is a good size, but the facts are hard to understand. Instead of facts history, we tend to go off on tangents about random things. The tests are quite difficult, but can be ok if you study really hard. kinda boring though.
NEVER EVER TAKE WORLD IN THE 20th CENTURY WITH THIS MAN. The class is terrible. He thinks every student here is a complete moron. Evil man, with hard tests.
Well lets start off w/ that aweful british accent u can even understand from the front row. He goes off topic way too much. He isn't a bad teacher but I just can understand him with his half talking half mumbling nonsense.
Ehhhh. I HATE that class. I am a junior with a 3.8 gpa taking his class for a gen ed. I did not expect to have to spend so much time on this class. His tests are not rediculous, but they are for the level of class he is teaching. I hear he is a much better Grad teacher.
nice guy, but his tests are so hard.
uggghh...the class is hard, however, he mostly just lectures from the textbook...so you might be able to get away with signing in then leaving..his tests are HARD if you don't read..overal a wicked nice guy...do your evil person paper well, it's an easy A and will help you're overall class grade...he does curve
stay away no matter how desperate you are for a gen ed. He will bore you to death. He thinks reading from the textbook is sufficient teaching. Ewww just stay away.
Very knowledgable, cool guy
He is very boring. He reads straight out of the textbook, which eventually, after week 1 becomes a bore, but attendance is taken, if it wasnt for that noone would go..
Cool guy, smart, likes to go off on a lot of tangents. I was lost at first but once you get use to his teaching style its all good. The test are super easy too. The paper wasnt too bad either hes a pretty easy grader. He took attendance so take this class if you arent going go. But overall it was a pretty good class. Its an easy B+ at least.
Disaster of a professor. Hard to understand because of his accent, boring lecturer, way to hard of a class for 100 level. I would rather kill myself than take another one of his classes. Absolute trainwreck.
totally agree with the other person, this guy is hard to understand and very boring, class is basically just discussion on the text book readings, theres really no set outline. on the other hand, if you go to him for help or a review of a paper, he will help, or most likely, his TA's will help.
Taught right out of the textbook and bores everyone to death but this class was so easy! He is extremely helpful when you talk to him outside of class and he is a really nice guy. The tests were very easy. He takes attendance so go to class and you'll do fine.
He is an ok teacher but his style is a little dull. He is really lacking in organization, but he keeps everything straight-forward.
This professor does a horrible job. He tells a vague story about history, but then his tests go so completely in detail that you have to know every single person, and place no matter what country it's in, and every year stuff occurs. He is very unorganized, and egotistical. If not for his attendance policy, his class would be empty.
Dont take him. Worst professor in history department. His lectures are worthless. Material for his tests are completely random and sometimes contain things that he never taught and aren't in the textbooks. Went for help, but he's an idiot. Almost changed majors from taking his class. There's a reason this guy only teaches 100 level classes
the test aren't bases off book
He has no method to his madness, debates with the TAs about various topics going off on tangents. Completely confusing teaching style. When asking questions about assignments he is rude and very unhelpful. I do not recommend him or his class.
i took world in the 20th century with him.. barely made it out alive. i am not into history but still that class was made worse than it needed to be. very nice guy, but his lectures are so boring and almost impossible to pay attention to. the tests are impossibly specific, and he put chapters on the final that he said he wouldn't!!
If you don't find history interesting before taking his class, then this guy will be EXTREMELY boring. He seems like a really nice person though. Attendance is mandatory! Requires you to read a book and watch a movie for the paper. Tests are okay and straight foward.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. I am a second semester sophomore student with a cume gpa of 3.73 but i'll be lucky to get a B- in this class. Smyth is a completely worthless teacher. you have to know every detail and every king of every dynasty. i dont know about you guys but i would rather watch paint dry than to learn all that crap.
GO TO THE TEST REVIEW! even if you don't take any notes the whole semester, if you can write notes really fast, you can get all the info you need for the final. If Patrick is still his TA, go to his, I got everything I needed from that one review class. Other than that, Smyth is boring and the tests are a lot easier than his teaching makes it look
I took the online version of the class during summer and it was honestly a 4 week waste of my life. The textbook was a joke. 40 pages on both world wars?! We had to do weekly 2000 word essays that were based on the most vague yes or no questions I've ever seen. He kept cheating me out of points and was unhelpful when I emailed him.
I agree...DONT TAKE HIM! He sits and talks the whole period. His test are on too many chapters and you have to write a paper. Waste of time, I wish I would have had someone warn me! Not only will he talk about someone important in the past, but he will talk about their kids and their mothers and lovers....too many facts for no reason!
If i would have know that he sucked so bad i would have just dropped it. i rather have slammed my head with a bed of nails then sit through another lecture of useless crap. Im a history major with a 3.88 and i think im gonna change my major just to avoid him
I don't usually mind history, but this guy is awful. His lectures are so boring, disorganized and hard to follow (ever hear of PPT?) . His tests end up being longer than most finals. There's a 4-6 page paper, but you get a topic shoved down your throat, which makes an unpleasant activity even more unbearable. The TAs are clueless too.
Ok...I took this guy for Euopean Civ. in the Fall 2007 semester...When I say dont take this guy, I can't stress it enough...LISTEN to everyone elses comments and dont take him, he is terrible. He is the worst teacher Ive ever had!!!
it was hard to understand what he wanted. i felt he was a lazy and uninvolved professor
I don't know why everyone is giving Prof. Smyth such a hard time. maybe it depends on what class you take with him, but so far he has been relatively easy. He enjoys the subject matter and lets us watch movies to supplement the material. 2 easy quizzes, 1 short research paper, 1 midterm and 1 final.
He is very fast in explaining thing but he knows what he is talking about and I like him a lot. He's really helpful and he's so funny. It's a hard class but if you go and read the book you should be fine.
Bring something to class to keep you awake because his talking wont. One of the more horrible teachers in UA.His tests are from what he says in class but how can you pass when he puts you to sleep.Dont take this class and if you do ...God speed!
Boring, but because he's a Gen Ed class you most likely have to take him... His accent is tough to get through if your in a big class, supposedly he's a better teacher in small groups, but i didnt like him in the lecture halls, none of his lecture made sense, it was much like 10th and 11th grade history again..
Prof Smyth is a very nice man, obviously knowledgable, but doesnt conveying course material clearly. The class is interesting, he provides some humorous details about the historical figures discussed, but theyre mostly irrelevant. With any luck, your TA will be able to help you untangle your notes before an exam. Read the textbook consistently!!!
Prof. Smyth does not spend a lot of time preparing for this class. He never knows what the lecture is going to be on that day until his TA shows him in the book. Going to him with questions is not very helpful and he is not good on E-mail. going to the TA office hours helped a lot. That's the key to doing well! She is very nice and willing to help!
I could not stand him. I dropped the class about halfway through it. I asked him how he graded people: he couldn't answer me, he said he just gets a feel for our performance, he also said and I quote "I am loath to give straight As," which really was the last straw. I've never met him and I hope I never have to again.
He is a TERRIBLE teacher. It is obvious that blackboard was too hard for him to understand! He was late on scoring and giving points to me repeatedly, he scored me as not participating when one time my posts were the longest ones of the day. He said and I quote "I am loath to give straight As," and couldn't tell me what his grading policy is
Very interesting professor. If you like history, you will like his class. Not a lot of outside work required except some "recommended" textbook reading and a term paper. Midterm was easy as long as you know your stuff.
I am not a history person at all, the class was not the worst history class I have taken, but definitely not the best either. Middle of the road, takes attendance, 2 quizzes, a midterm, a paper, and a final (which is not cumulative). I would consider taking another class from him.
this man clearly lost his mind a few years ago..and his TA david really shouldn't be giving pointers on how to write a good paper because everything he said was either obvious or wrong
IS so boring. you have to go to class to sign in at the end. Rambles on about nothing. The ta is helpful. Essay is confusing b/c he posts random stuff online. Dont bother bringing the text to class he skips around so much you cant even tell what chapter.
He teachers his class like a college class not a high school class, most freshmen find this hard thats why he gets a low rating. hes a very easy teacher and gives a gpa booster of an essay if you did bad on the midterm or final, He just stands in front of the class and talks. If you have an interest in history it is an easy A
Should probably spend more time on review before tests (or create a more helpful review than whizzing thru topics in 55 mins). I'm a good student-I study & pay attention in class. But I only got in the 70s range on my midterm and final. Paper was easy and a definite GPA boost. Nice guy, answers your questions.
I went into this class looking forward to learning about history in the 20th century, and came out very disappointed. His lectures are extremely dry, and made me despise the subject matter. He never returns emails, so hope for a good TA. Not that hard for a decent grade, but if you don't want to be bored out of your mind find another prof or class.
Dr. Smyth is an entertaining Brit who seems to have lost his way into an LC classroom at UA. He really is a very knowledgeable man, but lacks basic organizational skills. Smyth's lecturers would often skip around chapters with little rhyme or reason. There were some interesting lectures but overall it was a dry experience. TA wasn't very helpful.
Dont take him..His tests are wicked hard..He tests you on stuff he does not tell you about, no study guides or anything..his reviews do not help..he wants exact details such as exact dates and specific names of army vehicles. Its all multiple choice/true/false/matching and wicked hard. He says he will not curve it either cuz there are 140 students.
Brilliant guy, knows his subjects inside and out. Make sure you go to class and take good notes because he curves based on attendance. You will need that curve because the tests are IMPOSSIBLE. The essay does help alot though with the GPA.
This professor is a cold hearted jerk. He caused me to get an E and mess up my high GPA.Never get him.
HORRIBLE!!! Do not take this teacher if you dont have to. He expects you to read his mind and know exactly what he wantsyou to write while the topics he gives you to write about are so vague that it is nearly impossible. He isnt there to help you if you have questions either. Probably the worst teacher I have had in Albany.I got a B in the class bu
This mean prof. caused me to not graduate on time..I am not even a history major and needed the course as a gen ed, my last semester..but his tests were so hard, whose heard of minute detail mulitple choice tests. I failed his class and did not graduate cuz of this mean and crazy prof. Dont ever get him.
Dont ever take a class with him..his tests are impossible..the class avg for the midterm was a 63. He expects you to know exact minute details and its all mulitple choice, true/false and matching. His lectures dont follow the book, he jumps around from different parts of the book too.His tests are impossible and I reccomend nobody gets him
I didn't study at all for the for test and got a 67, the second test i studied for three hours and got a 64, for the third test i studies 7 hours and got a 61.. He just lectures there is no slides, or notes, or anything. DO NOT take this class if you are trying to keep up a good GPA.
His lectures are irrelevant, you wont be tested on them. I got an A, I didnt read or takes notes, and the way to do this is to go to his review and look up the 100 questions he gives you by looking for them in the book, not online. Yes this sucks but its the only way. You won't learn anything here.attendance required, bring work for a diff class
Very poor, unorganized teacher who think she knows everything. Can't understand a thing he says due to his english accent, and he makes no effort to make a lesson plan. avoid.
Cant understand what he is saying, talks in a mono tone english accent and very boring. His tests are impossible, no review sheets, he tells you the questions that should be on the test and they turn out to be something completely different.
Easy class. Very laid back. No slides, just lecture. Sometimes you have to read the book, not really a difficult course. Two online quizzes are administered and they're quite easy if you look answers up online. Gen-eds go for it, history majors/minors definitely a must take!

Prof. Smyth is really good, and hes Australian. He let us hand in stuff late a lot and didnt penalize, and one of my papers was a week late. He def knows his stuff and is a very cool guy. Take this class as a gen-ed, 4 papers 2 online quizzes. Sounds demanding but the papers are so easy and very general so just go to class.
I dont understand why Prof. Smyth has gotten such bad reviews. Hes an older guy, hes very laid back, and never takes off points for late work. I missed a deadline for a blackboard quiz and he just extended it for me and let me take it late. One of the best all around professors ive had thus far, take this class! Theres 4 papers but theyre easy.
He's brilliant, and knowledgeable of US and European history as well as world history which is what you go over in Tech. There are four papers, keep a steady, but and you'll get the full 20 points, even if you don't and you write above average, you still get a good score. You need three books and do practice your research skills, you'll need it.
Dr. Smyth is just an awesome professor. He has slides for this class on Blackboard, but make sure to take some notes. Has review session where he gives all the questions on the exam (LOOK THEM UP AT ALL COSTS). Shows movies/music pertaining to material. He's English, not Australian, btw. Still, his accent's cool and he's just really chill.
Okay, I like him as a person. He's really cool and makes sure the classes aren't boring. To be honest, half the reason it's hard to pay attention is because people are just rude. HOWEVER, his exams are very difficult if you don't study. It's an interesting class but be prepared to work for your grade. Another class I took at the time was helpful.
Class was awful. Flew through the powerpoints and is very difficult to understand. Gives u test questions to look up but different from the actual test. Grades in the 60s on the 4 exams...B in the class
He's a really nice guy if you sit near the front of the class and get to know him. Once he knows you by name you're essentially golden. Tests are hard and irrelevant to lectures. GO TO CLASS! It's mandatory. And bring other work to work on in class because his lectures are painfully boring. He's a funny old man, just humor him!
If you show interest in the material it feels like he's just talking to you in the class. The textbook is boring but all 4 tests are directly based from it which means nothing Smyth says is on any of the exams because he paraphrases for you. Online exams should be done in groups rather than alone.
The tests are all online and you can use the textbook and look things up but they're still really hard. His lectures are boring and have nothing to do with the tests so bring other work to do. Also make sure you take the tests with other people. He can be a nice guy but he is just not helpful at all and rarely answers e-mails.
Terrible professor. Aside from being boring he made frequent historical errors. He's (very) sinocentric in outlook, and also has little understanding of Islamic history (among other things), yet insists on pretending that he does and trying to talk about such topics in class. He seems more like a hobby historian rather than a professional.
If one is a mature well read adult, his classes are a breeze and fun. Pay attention and show some interest and he is there to help. Any complaints are from those that are lazy or have a chip on their shoulder. He is very even handed and is knows Islamic culture, unless the student is looking for an excuse as to why they did poorly.
Professor Smyth was absolutely brillant. He treated the class as adults- and encouraged interesting conversations. I really enjoyed this class. He expects QUALITY work from student papers, and if you think you can get away with not doing the work or putting in the minimal effort, guess again...but that shouldn't be a problem for serious students.
Professor Smyth is a brilliant man.I found his lectures to be both insightful and informative. He expects quality work from students when submitting written assignments, so don't be afraid to look outside the proverbial box and beyond conventional historical wisdom for your thesis. Make sure you edit- he was better at grammar than my Eng. prof.!
