Very nice and very smart; however, he can not always take what is in his mind and transfer it to the students.
Good teacher who spends alot of time going over each point. Lectures are boring, but necessary to do well in the class. Attend class, ask questions, and the class will not be too bad.
Very difficult class...especially when you can't understand the professor. Perla moves extremely fast, and tests on five or six chapters at one time.
Do not take stats with Perla, I was told not to and did anyway and I really regret it.
Hard time understanding him. Moves at a fast pace (could have been because course was only 8 weeks). All past test are at academic skills center. They haven't changed much, if at all. Highly recommend lokking at past tests.
He wears colorful sweaters :-) Cool guy. Pretty easy.
He was very helpful. Statistics isnt an easy class, but he gives good examples. Show up every day to class (he takes attendance) and pay attention. I got a 2.5 in it
OMG! He subbed for my regular prof for the first 6 weeks of class and I couldn't understand a WORD he said. I was so lost for those 6 weeks that I never caught up and I failed that class miserably. RUN AWAY!
Very willing to help as well as very understanding. Lectures were read straight out of the book. Two exams worth 100 points each, homework collected by chapter worth 100 points total, and final worth 200 points. Requires quite a bit of out of class studying since you get into some theoritical stats as well as an application. Better then Kattree
I'm one of many of the people who dropped the class. Perla is horrible! He didn't actually want to help me until he found out I had already dropped the class. Then he says, "Well, if you come back to the class, I'll help you for as many hours as you need outside of class each week." How ridiculous is that?
Hey is a good professor. Very clear in his instruction and is always willing to work with students. Go to class, he takes attendance and considers it in your final grade. Also do the homework, it's also counted. Other than that I would highly recommend this professor. This is the second class I have taken from him and I've been very pleased.
He tries to be funny, but his teaching is aweful. He is all over the board and must follow the syllabus rather than slow down when everyone is confused. He will add points to tests but that doesnt really help when ur grade is so low. The tests are much harder than the hw and things in class. Take someone else if at all possible!
His lectures are just him reading the textbook to you, with no further explanation as to what the text is actually saying. If you have a question, he tells you to refer to the text book. He moves too fast and can't understand why the class is having so many problems with the material. Nearly the whole class failed the first test. Take someone else!
Teaches straight from the book and doesnt not want to take time to explain anything better. Is only concerned with getting through the sylibus. Can not give anymore detail than the book.
Absolutely horrible. Would NEVER reccomend him. i did not understand a word said that entire semester. he refused to help students and simply repeated the words from the book. I would NEVER EVER refer anyone to this class. NEVER.
He reads the book to you, and he is really only concerned with getting through the syllabus. Hard to understand, although there are worse. Be prepared to go to his office when he screws up your test grade. I found this class easier than Calc 1 despite the professor
The worst professor at OU, hands down. He comes to class and looks at his syllabus to see what he'll be "teaching" that day. then he procedes to write down what's already in the book. No one understands his homework grading policy, and he's impossible to understand. The only plus, if there is one,is he dumbs the tests down to his teaching level
Perla overall was okay. Math is a pretty hard subject for me, so I had more difficulty than others. The notes were decent. He answered questions but he tends to get agitated and be a total a** if you ask too many or a "stupid question". He was a really leinent grader. Partial credit on test, hw, and attendance. The project was a pain, but he's ok.
Perla is boring. No doubt about it. He does his job plain and simple. go to class, sign attendance sheet, do your best on the homework, go to tutors in north foundation hall! Had him for 121 and 122 got 3.6 and 3.7
Seems like a nice guy but teaches straight out of the book. Does not give clear responses when asking about my grade throughout the semester until the surprise at the end. Not recommended!
He taught his class right out of the book without much insight of his own. Not great at answering questions and is very obscure when you ask him about your grade. I tried throughout the course and never got a good answer until the surprise at the end. Not recommended.
I had him for a night class total of 7 hours per week.. I could not comprehend his english or his math. Along with sitting in class for 7 hours a week, i tutored for another 6-8 hours per week. Then another 4-6 hours per week studying homework. All this work for a C+ if you have to take him plan on studying a lot. If you have an option, RUN!

Can't understand him, his writing is horrible, he writes his own tests. This class is a 100 lvl math class. I am a math major and have straight A's in math and I'm worried I won't pass his class. I'm teaching myself everything so if you can't teach yourself, good luck
His quizzes & tests are pretty difficult. Class averages were usually around 50%. He doesn't collect homework, though, that's probably why. Do the homework, ask questions.. and you'll be perfectly fine.
His tests and quizzes always seemed to have somekind of surprise on them that was not covered in class or review. He tries his best to explain stuff to you, but by the time he is done rambling you are more confused. If you want to get above a 3.0 you HAVE to do the hw and utilize his office hours or the academic skills center if you have problems.
Can't understand him and can't read his writing! If you ask for help in class he's likely to laugh and tell you to come to his office hours then switch to the next question. Attendance was mandatory in the beginning, but the average on the exams were in the 30s and 40s so he made attendance points bonus so more people would pass.
He's a sincere guy, but is hard to understand and has terrible handwriting. However, he is willing to help and wants you to succeed. His tests are not very hard if you are prepared for them. A good way to study for them is to just use the book because he lectures straight from it. Overall, it's not a hard class if you're willing to work a little.
Very hard to understand. Also very hard to read his handwriting making a lethal combination for complete and utter failure.
The professor is very hard to understand. After the first couple weeks, you begin to get used to it though. However, you still will not be able to understand everything he says. His handwriting is AWFUL. Even after he uploaded his notes to moodle, I could not make out over half of his words. I am good at math, and failed. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Very difficult to understand due to his heavy accent. If you don't have much prior knowledge about statistics prior to this course, you will be needing lots of self studying and tutoring. I would not recommend.
This class was not very hard content-wise, but the lectures were HORRIBLY boring. Make sure you drink coffee or you'll fall asleep. However, Perla is a very fair teacher, so the tests were not hard as long as you study, and he let us use formula sheets and our books. Not a hard class, just a boring one!
Probably the worst teacher ever. His class was impossible. Don't take this class unless you want to be bored out of your mind and confused all at the same time. I honestly regret not dropping this class as soon as it started.
He does not speak English very well. His quizzes and 3 tests make up the whole class. His final is worth 200 points and is only about 20 questions. Do not take this class with Perla as your professor. Also buy or rent the e-version of the book its alot cheaper.
His handwriting is not the best and his accent is pretty strong but you'll get used to it. He is not as bad a people say. The examples that he goes over in class are usually in his exams. So pay attention. If you do the homework, take good notes and pay attention you will get a good grade in this class.
Would not recommend. Perla has very bad handwriting along with a thick accent. Makes it hard to follow along. Also, VERY boring lecture.
Stalest teacher that i've ever had! His heavy accent is not a problem but notes are unclear and I felt that exams had surprises in them. As a freshman not used to the difficulty of college, choose a different teacher.
Do not take Perla. Bad accent, bad grader, bad teacher.
Thick accent, illegible handwriting. He grades very tough with little to no partial credit. A simple mistake took my grade on a test down by 15 percent as it trickled down the page. Seems like he doesn't really know the material; the lectures are straight out of the book, as are the examples. Avoid if possible.
He is indeed hard to understand and hard to read his handwriting AT FIRST. i personally got used to his accent and handwriting within the first week or two. his exams are fair and he grades very fair. He lets you have a "formula sheet" and lets you have ur books out so i say take him because you can use a lot of extra help during the exams.
Perla really isn't that bad. Very nice guy with a strong accent. And yes, his handwriting isn't the greatest. But his lectures usually aren't too bad. I mean, it's a basic stats class, its going to be boring. The formula sheet is so helpful on exams. Know how to use the formulas, get a 4.0, it's that simple.
3 quizzes, each worth 5%, 2 tests, each worth 20%, attendance is 5% and the final exam is worth 40%. The final is exactly what was on the previous assessments, just different numbers. He is a really nice guy. The final was the longest final I've ever taken in my life. It was not just a Statistics test, but an endurance test. He's a good guy.
Phenomenal professor.
Im not sure that I would call him a phenomenal professor- you can't read his handwriting 80% of the time, his lectures are super hard to follow and he is not very approachable. I had to interrupt the lecture several times to ask what he was even going over. The only good thing is that he gives old practice exams that are very similar to ours
Perla is a good professor and he teaches the material well. I suggest looking at his practice tests before going to class so you know the point of what you are learning. He gives you everything you need to get a 4.0 once you get used to his accent and bad handwriting. He is kind of boring but go to class and if you have any questions just ask!!
I took Professor Perla in Win'16 and the course was very hard. Then, I retook it Win'17 and he actually gave us practice exams this time which were the exact same as the exams he actually gave in class w/ different #s. It ended up being an easy 4.0 if you just learned the stuff on the practice quizzes and exams.
Yes he has an accent but anyone with half a brain can still understand everything that goes on in this class. He gives practice quizzes and exams for everything, including the final. If you go to class (attendance is counted for grade) and even half pay attention, then do the practice quizzes, and use some common sense, you will get an A.
Professor Perla has a fairly thick accent, but you get used to it by the end of the first week of class. His lectures seem vague and confusing at times, but don't let that discourage you. Put in the effort and you'll earn and A no problem. Professor Perla gives practice exams/quizzes that are VERY similar to your actual exams/quizzes.
Perla is boring at lecture and has horrible handwriting, but you get use to it. He grades only the quizzes and tests, so if you mess up at the beginning, you're in trouble. He doesn't curve or gives partial credit. He does NOT give practice quizzes/exams in this course like he did with the other stats courses.
Perla is not a great professor. His handwriting is illegible and he doesn't really help much with questions asked. He grades by a few things and very harshly. You really have to know the material! The tests and quizzes is not open notes/book but he allows formula sheets, but they are mostly useless anyways due some tricky questions. Avoid him!
He was a bad teacher, but available after class. If you visited him during office hours and asked him what would be on the exams he would give you a pretty good idea of what to study. His in class examples and homework problems were on the quizzes and tests but with different numbers. This class is easy if you make it easy.
He wasn't a very good teacher. Never replied to my email regarding questions. I once emailed him about the first exam, and he replied back to it near the final exam with information regarding the first exam. Practice exams are 95% identical to actual exam. Handwriting completely illegible. 10/10 would not recommend.
I found it very hard to understand the material. Since you only get graded on tests and quizzes, you have to really know what youre doing. He was always available to meet outside of the class. When I wasnt sure if I was going to pass, he told me what I needed to do . I would recommend getting a chegg account to help you study practice tests.
Dr. Perla is an awesome professor; I am so glad I took him for this class. I would not take anyone else! His exams are almost identical to the study guides, AND he goes over the study guide answers in class! Make sure to take notes and pay attention to all the practice problems he does, because they will be on the exam. Book only used for problems.
Prof Perla's accent is nothing you can't get used to but don't underestimate this class. He taught pretty fast and was not the best at explaining things. The concepts are not hard he just doesn't teach them very well. Practice quizzes and exams are very similar to the actual ones and he usually helps you through some of them if you ask.
He's a great person but not a great teacher. It's hard to follow him in lecture and the class gets VERY confusing but reading the book and doing the book problems help. On the bright side, his quizzes and exams match pretty much directly to the practice ones. He seems strict and scary at first but he's very caring. But he's bad at answering emails
Professor Perla tries his best due to classes being online, but technology isn't his strength. Many lectures were cut about 20-30 min short due to his computer dying, so id advise him for an in person class. Class has a point total of 500 points, and 400 of it comes from tests (the final is 200 points) so put in the work for tests and it will show
Perla is not a good fit to teach PhD course 6113 , I didnt understand any things from his lecture
Waste of time and money. All lectures are just regurgitation of material directly from textbook, never added any new insights, but unfortunately attendance is mandatory. Tried to show us some demonstrations on Minitab, but was too incompetent with technology so we could never see what he was doing clearly. Easy class, but just go to the library.
He is a good person and cares about his students' health, but he is really hard to follow during lecture because his handwriting is bad and his accent can be hard to understand. Doesn't answer emails, takes a long time grading things, and the hw assignments don't have solutions to look at. Tests and quizzes are almost exactly like the practices.
I don't fully understand why people hate on Perla, he's pretty reasonable and throws no curveballs. Obviously, you need to put in the work and teach yourself but definitely, the best option since the math department overall is notoriously bad. Just do the practice reviews since the quizzes, tests, and exams emulate those almost identically.
All round great guy. Definitely take him!
Not sure why he always gets flack. Virtual class. Good professor with good explanations. Tests are identical in format to the practice tests he offers, and the material is very similar to a course like AP statistics. Overall, I would recommend this as the best math course at OU by a long shot (especially compared to calc I/II)
If you want to do well in Professor Perla's class, make sure you get the textbook and do the practice problems from the book. I relied heavily on the textbook rather than the lecture because it was hard to follow. The only graded items that your final grade in the class depends on are a couple quiz grades and the 3 exam grades.
One of the worst lecturers I have ever seen. Barely explains anything reads straight from the book and just touches on one subject or example only to not finish it and barely explain another thing.. Prepare to read the book and do practice problems because you will leave his lectures learning nothing.
The professor constantly loses track of the topic he tries to explain and takes personal phone calls in the middle of lectures. Attendance is mandatory, but I'd advise ignoring him and teaching yourself during his lecture times. The practice material he provides is full of errors and leaves you confused.
This off-putting punk doesn't even know what a random variable is. He is argumentative, even though he doesn't speak English. What a third-rate joke.
SPAT = Subbaiah Perla Annoying Tissue
SPIT = Subbaiah Perla Incompetent Toxicity
Perla is the worst ever. No one understands his English and many are trying to emulate the way he speaks. Funny!
Perla is the worst of worst.
Perla is fourth-rate. Maybe you shouldn't come to this forth-rate school. You get what you expect, nothing more, nothing less.
This joke doesn't even know central limit theorem. How did get the job in the first place? Even ChatGPT doesn't know the answer.
be me excited to learn stats for ML professor takes attendance like its grade school rushes through lectures like he's got better things to do “You should know this already" whenever anyone asks a question teaches nothing all semester takes calls, texts during class constantly fighting the computer review is useless switch profs before I lose faith
Run as far as you can from this class. I have been a student almost my whole life, I was put in prekindergarten when my sibling was in kindergarten, I have taken tens of classes since then but never have I had a worse experience. He doesn't really teach, he has a thick accent & reads of already written solutions! barely understood what he's saying.
Honestly, he posted all the practice tests and solutions for each exam or quiz, and some of the questions on those were exactly the same. HW was not mandatory, but it was concise and related to material we learned. Only critique is that lectures are not helpful and he isn't the best at technology. Other than that, just do the problems he says, Easy

TBH, I studied A LOT. Be prepared to teach yourself. Need textbk! 3 Q's, 2 tst's, a final & graded atn. Doesn't respond to emails/post grades timely. Final is the practice exam verbatim (you're welcome). Doable, but could've been easier elsewhere. Harsh grader, but willing to award pts back.(imo kind person) Stats isn't hard, he makes it hard. GL!
