One of the best finance profs at WLU. Great examples of complicated concepts make things approachable, readily lends textbooks from his personal collection. Course is a little back loaded (lots of stuff due at the end of term), assignments aren't too tough, but long. All around smart, capable, and pleasant prof!
never respond emails...bad attitude!
The best finance prof I have had so far. His examples are similar to what you will be tested on, and he walks through difficult concepts step by step to ensure everyone understands. Also, there are many opportunities for extra credit.
The best finance pro at WLU. His slides are the most helpful thing ever! very details! He is very very nice! and he cares about his students not like the other pros
He actually made learning finance easy, which was impossible for me. He is very fair, lectures were well-structured, and he is very knowledgeable on what he teaches. It's a shame he isn't teaching any other finance courses next term or else I would've taken it!
Doesn't respond to emails and is arrogant. Not too friendly with students outside of the class.
I do not care how much he knows about Investment because he definitely can not teach. The class is rigid and loaded of theory. Let alone his attitude.
Gives attitude and makes going to classes extremely boring. Always out of breath leading to difficulty hearing him. Very subjective marking so be sure to check exam results.
I like the courses of this professor, because, even though the subject and contents may not be easy, he makes them detailed, easy to understand and very intuitive. He is genuinely concerned about students, and is very accommodating. Those who complain are ones who expect easy grades in spite of their ignorance and non-efforts.
I loved this course because the professor teaches it very well - very well organized, class notes are superb, examples are detailed, explanations easy and intuitive. Course workload is high and challenging - but these made me learn and appreciate the topics. Accommodating, very concerned about students, and patient and prompt in email responses.
Challenging but interesting course. Very good professor. Very helpful. Good class notes.
Do not take this course if you expect easy grades without effort. Definitely take this course if you want to learn finance concepts and skills for long run. Excellent prof., in class and outside.
Great professor, although most of the assignments and projects were due near the end of term (maybe the way the course is planned out).
Doesn't care if students really understand anything in class at all as long as they show up.
This course is definitely not for slackers. Work load is high and towards the end, but these really made me learn and appreciate. Very detailed class notes, very detailed explanations, and very helpful outside class. Great Prof., good course.
Good course, great professor.
Great professor, very useful course.
Excellent professor!
Excellent
This course is not an easy one and becomes even harder if the content is not presented or taught in a clear manner. Lack of clarity in notes. Slides were in PDF format and students had to write the notes in class on those PDF slides since the important notes were only provided during class. HIGHLY INCONVENIENT method for teaching BU623.
Great professor, one of the best at WLU. Clear lectures, slides summarize the content very well, extra notes are given in class - go to class for those notes! Also if you go to class, keep up with the lectures, and pay attention - the course is very rewarding. Final had a couple of tough questions but more than fair given all the practice problems.
Admittedly challenging course, work load is high. But, at the end of the day, very useful course. Very well organized lectures, very informative classes. Highly practical course with long run benefits.
Excellent Course, Excellent Professor. One of the best courses (from learning as well as value point of view).
Challenging course, but highly worthwhile. Immense learning.
Extremely practical, highly useful course. Amazing lectures. Comprehensive class-notes. Latest and highly pertinent examples, data and information.
Really broad and vague projects, 20-page cases that are only worth 5% of your grade. No clear expectations and so much content covered in class. I would avoid at all costs and wish I would have! Gets marks back super late
Want to take a course that is challenging but whose returns are high? Then this is the course. Professor of high pedigree - Yale graduate & wall street experienced. He knows the competitive financial world out there. He makes the course difficult and challenging, but at the end of the day, I am a much better student because of it. Definite 5 stars.
Definitely one of the best profs at WLU, very knowledgeable. If your objective is to learn, you will never regret to take his courses. Of course, if your objective is to get some cheap marks, go after someone else.
The best course I took at Laurier. Period. The best prof at Laurier. Period. This Prof. is from Yale - it speaks for itself. Period.
Difficult and challenging course. But the rigour and workload made me learn with a hands-on experience. And the prof's lectures makes learning hard concepts very easy in an intuitive way. When I am going through the job interview process, I realize how beneficial this course has been.
Difficult to understand during lectures because of his poor English and talks on a low voice.
Went to all lectures, took notes, and still it was no use. Teaching ability -> Very Poor.
3 projects, 3 quizzes, and a final EXAM all in the last week of classes.
Lots of group projects, frequent quizzes and large quantitative focus in material. Lectures are very thorough with detailed class notes. Material is very applicable to the real world (i.e. in Capital Markets) as it sets a strong foundation in understanding and calculating different risk exposures and risk management tools.
Doesnt seem to like he enjoys teaching. Bad attitude towards students.
Professor Nayak's course is one of the best at Laurier. He expects alot from his students but the content covered was immense. Its really practical and useful for anyone wanting to work in Finance. If you take initiative, he will also reciprocate and help you.
Amazing course, amazing prof. If you want a successful take a course by this prof. - you will go far...
Very realistic and practical course + detailed lectures + rigorous but practical quants challenging but very valuable course
I learned a lot from this esteemed professor when I took this course. Since I have started working in finance industry, I realize how beneficial this course was, what a fabulous professor this is, and how amazing his lectures were. Thank you, Dr. Nayak, a bit belatedly, but thanks for your amazing classes...
If you are a Grad student, DO NOT TAKE this. You will thank me later.
Challenging course, but excellent course from learning point of view. Very practical.
Amongst all the useless (and maybe easy) courses in my MBA program at this university, this was one of the few very useful and highly practical (albeit, a bit challenging) course I took. If you are ambitious and need a productive career in Finance, then definitely take this course. But if you are lazy and complacent, then go to some other course!
Want a course that is highly beneficial in the long run for a career in financial sector? Then take this course... Want a professor who really cares, puts in a lot of effort, and takes time explaining difficult concepts? Then take this course...
Difficult course, but very good lectures. Detailed lecture notes, good explanations. Most importantly, very practical and useful course.
Very useful course, great professor.
Very useful course; learned a lot... Very good professor.
Slightly challenging course, but very practical. Very good prof. with up-to-date industry information, data and discussions.
Good prof, good course. Very useful course.
Slightly challenging, but quite useful course...
Amazing course - very useful... Best lecture notes I have seen in all through my undergrad career. Makes a very challenging course highly intuitive. Very accessible outside classroom and via emails. Dignified professor and perfect gentleman.
Loved the course, learnt a lot. Difficult concepts, made it easy via great lectures. Outstanding hands-on real-world-data assignments.
Extremely valuable course. Lots of info and good lectures. Great assignments.
Challenging course, but very useful course. The most practical course I took during my MBA program. Superb lecture slides, great lectures, makes difficult concepts easy - by explaining the underlying intuitions well.
Great course, highly competent professor. Simplifies and explains very difficult material quite eloquently. Learnt a lot from this course.
Lots of material, but very useful course. Very challenging but extremely beneficial data assignments based on real world data.
The quizzes in this class are ridiculously impossible and he forces people to stay on camera the entire time and says if you look away from the screen or if the camera goes off he will not make the quiz. He enjoys giving bad marks and gloated that the class average on a quiz was "too high" - it was under 60%. Avoid at all costs.
Worst mark I've ever gotten, guy told me I lacked the professionalism to take his course because I missed a few classes because I was working.
Best prof at Laurier. Makes you study hard, but the amount of useful stuff you'll learn is insane. If you're hardcore into finance you'll love him.
Fact 1: This is the most difficult ocurse I took at laurier. Fact 2: This is by far the most beneficial course I have taken. Fact 3: Lectures are amazing - see how very difficult concepts are made easy for you. Fact 4: Reach out to him - you will not find another prof. you cares that much about you and help you beyond reasonable bounds...
Option 1: want an easy grade without learning anything? skip this course and take some stupid course in marketing or HR. Option 2: want to get value for every $ paid in tuition fees? Take this course. This maverick prof. is absolutely passionate about teaching, and the insane amount of learning you will achieve is mind-boggling.
One of the hardest courses I have taken, but one of the most beneficial... There is so much practical stuff you can learn from this course.
This is the worst course that I have ever attended, piles of assignments without given clear explanation, and the professor would never give response to help students who get confused to have clearer understandings, everytime just responded impatiently.
Very different, unique course. Lots of assignments, but all assignments based on real data. Knows how to deal with students - lots of unprofessional loudmouths in class, dealt with them nicely.
Lots of assignments, but very practical course. Good professor.
Hard course, but very good prof. Very easy to reach out to. Replies to each and every email in detail.
1. Too many repetitions on the assignments. 2. Too many assignments. 3. Not enough timely reply on the email. 4. Feedback is released even after the final exam. Excuse me???? 5. Never get his grading points on the assignments. 6. For some of materials, I believe they are needed to update. Some of them are obsolete. Much more comments due to limit.
I learnt a lot from this course. I am sure it is going to help me a lot when I hit the job market next term.
This is the best PhD level course one can take. This prof. knows the research field, knows data handling, and has incredible programming as well as statistical skills.
Lots of assignments and bad at course allocation. Nothing needs to be done in the first month and 4 due close to the end of the course. No grading (no feedback) ever for the heavily loaded assignments, even before the final. No typical focus. covers most of CFA lv3 materials. the final is unclear. good luck on self-learning. Avoid it at all costs.
Great course. Not for people who want an easy grade without learning. Take it if you are ambitious ready to put in effort. First, very useful for actual industry application. Second, very beneficial for CFA preparation.
Heavy course, lots of topics, but very well done. Bottomnline: you will learn a lot.
Tough taskmaster but very fair. Difficult grades but many opportunities to earn extra credit. Very practical course.
Wordless
1. Market Risk. Your heart rate fluctuates with extremely low scores. The VAR of your score is very low. 2. Credit Risk. Get your score later than promised dates, even affect your graduation. Never keeps his words. 3. Liquidity Risk. No way to know your performance until final, cannot adjust your strategy accordingly.
Fabulous PhD course; great command over statistics and computational programming. Learnt a lot...
Lots of work, but very excited to receive much higher scores than expected! Makes you sweat, but in the end you get rewarded!
Had to work a lot for this course, but learnt a lot as well too.
Ok course, alright prof. Nothing outstanding but probably better than other courses and profs out there.
The professor has no logic for his classes. It looks like he is trying to put all related material into one class, which makes no sense. He has problems keeping his schedule (you got all your assignments grades after final exam). TBH, he needs to be more professional as a "professor"... Do not recommend to take his classes.
Challenging course, lots of assignments. But learnt a lot. Got a much better grade than I was expecting or deserved.
Absolutely wonderful course, great prof. To slackers and losers - criticize him. If you want to learn finance and boost your career - take his course.
I am not happy with the grade I got, but probably my fault - didn't do well in the final exam and the quizzes. Very heavy course, but learnt a lot. Believe I can apply most of it in my job hunt and the career,
Got a much better grade than expected. Very useful course. Learnt a lot. Good prof. Cares about students. Appears strict but gives very good grades at the end.
Take this course for one single fact - you will have to do project on a real financial institution based on real data. And believe me, the amount you will learn from doing this project is mind boggling - you will learn it from no other course, no other prof.
Good course, lots of assignments but learnt a lot. A very caring prof.
Amazingly knowledgeable prof. Very well delivered course.
This is the most useful course I have taken during my MFin degree curriculum. Lots of assignments, lots of material in the course. Amazingly well organized, updated to the latest info. Very useful for CFA II & III. Not for whiners and sissies - just a few but kept on complaining and distracting the rest of our class!
Probably one of the most difficult courses I have taken in the four years of my undergrad. But definitely the most useful - very beneficial in the context of all internships I have done and what lays there. One more secret - the final grade surprises you in a positive way; most I know got a better grade than they were expecting.
One of the most useful, practical, beneficial courses one can find. Amazing professor - hard taskmaster, but very caring and genuinely passionate about teaching and helping students. Want the value for tuition money and career ambitions - take this course. But do not take it if you are a loser and whiner.
Very good prof., extremely knowledgeable, very willing to help. Amazingly beneficial course.
I will be honest - I sweated in this course more than any other course I have taken. There are lots of assignments, but they are based on real actual data and are amazingly beneficial. Lectures are highly topical, well organized and adroitly delivered.
Amazing course, extremely detailed yet very well explained lectures. Lots of assignments, but very realistic and practical. Definitely recommend the professor and the course for anyone who wants to learn REAL finance.
Very beneficial lectures, very useful assignments, very caring professor.
A challenging course in terms of contents as well as assignments, but I learnt more from this course than any other course I have taken. Plus, the professor does very generous curve-ups - I and all in class got much higher grades than we expected or truthfully deserved. Supernice guy too. Very down to earth in spite of his pedigree.
An amazingly useful and practical course, extremely beneficial lectures and a great professor. Very caring, and very accessible. Very knowledgeable too. Extremely good in big data and programming. Gives the appearance of a strict professor, but is a closeted softie in grades! :)
Very good course, very knowledgeable professor, but the best thing is that he is a very low key professor who really cares... he has the empathy which is badly missing these days...
Absolutely incredible lectures. You will never get a better set of well organized lecture slides than this course. What an incredible professor - the way he breaks down complex concepts and explains them in simple intuitive form is out of the world. Professor is extremely passionate about teaching - and this is most practical course you will find.
Amazing lectures. Explains concepts very well. Fabulous lecture slides. Very accessible outside classroom.
Very useful course. Best set of lecture slides. Very well designed and articulate lectures. Attendance is essential for good learning. One of the best courses for job market. Very nice and caring professor.
Based prof all the way through
Fabulous lectures. Goes all the way to explain difficult concepts. One of the most practical courses, one of the best best BBA courses,
This prof. wants you to think out of the box - he always tells you to think like a corporate manager. Every single class is so thought provoking. Never I have taken another course that makes you think late into the night. I will vote this course and this professor as the best I have ever taken - all through my academic career, period!
Great lectures that actually explain fairly complicated topics in an understandable and engaging way. If you want to push yourself and actually learn something about the industry this course will teach you a lot, and the marking is fair. Putting in the effort to get a decent mark will have you ending up learning a lot so it's worth it.
Attendance was mandatory as he did not post his slides. His slides were very confusing as he only gave the final answer and no solution on how to solve the problem. He was difficult to understand and gave little to no explanation as to the online or how to prep for quizzes and the final exam.
Amazing lectures, best lecture slides one will ever find. Posts his lecture slides well in advance (unlike what previous respondent falsely states). Solutions to numerical problems not there in posted slides but he solves these problems in class, showing and explaining every single step with highlights, blurbs, circles/arrows etc. Very informative.
Very professional and caring professor, excellent lecture, amazing lecture slides. Explains difficult concepts very well. I struggled initially because I was slack in attendance in the first part of the course. But once I became regular, the lectures were very easy grasp. Attendance is very important for this great course.
Most practical, real-world relevant course. You must take this course seriously - attend classes, pay attention and you will learn how finance works in real world. This course is definitely not for the slackers & losers - those who bunk classes and prepare for exams 12 hours before the exam time. Respect the course, and you will win.
Very beneficial - practically useful - course. Great lectures, fabulous lecture slides. Caring professor. Fair grading, willing to give extra credit.
Very useful course - though lots of material, but all very practical. Great lecture slides, very good lectures. Very caring professor and extremely approachable.
Great course, very useful lectures. Attendance matters. Professor is very approachable and really cares.
Lots of material, fabulous lecture slides. Very practical, great lectures. Very useful practical course.
Very useful course; very experienced and dedicated professor; out of the world lecture slides and very good lectures; caring professor and accessible outside classroom.
I am an ex-student. I gave a very poor review here as I found the course difficult and got a poor grade (to admit, because I skipped classes). Nothing against prof - he is a fabulous lecturer. However, having worked in industry for years, I realize how useful this course is. Folks, this is the best course and very good professor you can have.
One of my favourite profs at Laurier. Most applicable and useful class I've ever taken, and the prof is super knowledgeable. Willing to help outside of class, and his slides/examples are super easy to understand and relevant to what is going on in the real world. Marks very fair on the projects, the quizzes were a little tough but manageable.
Great lectures and extremely knowledgeable, but he marks incredibly hard. Expect a bad grade in his class no matter what
Great lectures, very knowledgeable professor. Accessible outside class. Challenging quizzes but fair marking in quizzes. Very constructive and benevolent in grading of group assignments.
Best lecture slides ever - very detailed, very well explained. Extremely knowledgeable prof. Amazing lectures - explains complex concepts and problems very well. Always inspires "to think like a financial manager". Very practical course. Challenging quizzes but very generous in grading group tasks - if quality and effort demonstrated.
Great lectures, excellent lecture slides. Fair grading in quizzes, generous grading in project and cases.
Extremely knowledgeable professor! Great lecture slides! Very useful course! Very diligent is responding g to all emails in detail.
Excellent course. Best lecture slides. Great lectures. Very knowledgeable professor, and explains things very well. And the MOST practical and professionally useful course.
Very useful and practical course. Some challenging topics, but excellent professor - explains very well and amazingly articulate lecture slides.
Great lectures, very accessible, very useful course.
Loved the course. Very useful. Great lectures, knowledgeable professor, cares about the students.
The best taught and most useful course at Laurier. Topics are challenging, but professor explains very well plus lecture slides are amazing - no textbook can even match. Very fair and even liberal in grading - specially in group tasks.
Challenging course, lots of assignments - but very beneficial. Hands on experience with data analysis, and very realistic and practical course. Very knowledgeable professor, amazing lectures and best lecture slides ever!
One of the most useful and practical courses in entire BBA curriculum. This course is A-MUST if you are targeting a career in the financial sector. Very knowledgeable professor, amazing lectures, best ever lecture slides. Very accessible and considerate prof.
Very practical, useful course. Great lectures, lots of useful info. Tests/exams are a bit challenging, but it is quite easy to get a good grade because (i) final grade is based on a curve, (ii) a big part of course grade is based on group tasks (project, cases), and it is quite normal to get very good scores in these group tasks if one is sincere.
So far, great lectures! Very informative.
Decent prof but poor attitude. Irrationally strict at times. Not sure who's writing all the 5 star reviews (seems fishy).
Extremely useful (practical) course, very well organized and explanatory lectures. Great professor, very accessible, very fair, very caring. Lays down expectations clearly, and prepares students for cases, project and exams quite early and repeatedly.
Very useful course. Lot of material but explained very well and highly practical. Fair grading, very accessible. No-nonsense thoroughly professional profession.
A tough course for MBAs - who do not have enough finance or quantitative background (like me) - but very useful course and an amazing professor with greatest set of lecture slides possible.
This course is simply amazing, professor is highly competent and passionately involved in creating a very beneficial & practical course for students. Yes, the professor is no-nonsense and hence those students hoping for a free-ride to a good grade will whine and complain. Those who are serious about a career in finance sector - go for this course.
There are 3 reasons why any student aspiring a finance job focus must take this course: (1) the best set of lecture slides you will ever find, (2) the most practical and useful finance course offered at Laurier, (3) the professor makes extra effort for students - explains complex concepts well and is very proactively accessible outside classroom.
Very practical course, extremely knowledgeable professor, great lectures. Very clear grading criteria, fair grading, high emphasis on group work.
Very useful course, amazing lecture slides.
Engaging lectures, detailed slides, and a knowledgeable prof. Use Unstuckstudy alongside the free textbook for efficient prep. Challenging but rewarding course.
Do not take his courses. Don't be deceived by the good reviews on here. It is embarrassingly obvious he wrote 90% of the good reviews on here. It is clear from reading the reviews that he takes great pride in his wordy slides that don't help with his quizzes at all. A "knowledgable prof" he calls himself, yet cannot answer students' questions well.
Challenging course, but very practical course. Lots of topics, but prof. does well in covering and explaining all. Attendance and taking notes helps.
Professor Nayak is one of the best professors I've had in 4 years of BBA. BU433 is an extremely informative course and is very well taught. All evaluation is extremely fair - although the projects can be a lot of work. Highly recommend
Very good course. Absolutely practical, very detailed and well organized lecture slides, up to date data and information, very well taught. Professor caring and very accessible. Quizzes are a bit challenging but are a very small component of course grade. Very useful course project.
Very useful course, well taught, well organized. Motivates you as well as compels you to work hard and get prepared for actual finance jobs.
Very useful course + informative lecture slides + good lectures. Three additional points of note. (1) Extremely accessible: in person + replies to every email in detail. (2) Gives very good tips on career planning and preparing for job interviews. (3) Very willing to help on material outside the realms of the course.
Agreed. Not only one of the most practical business courses, but one of the best organized and best taught courses. Very accessible, very prompt in responses and very helpful in non-course matters.
A course with quantitative models and difficult concepts but taught very well. Latest information on status of industry and events always discussed and hence makes it a very practical course. Very accessible outside class and very practical knowledge.
Very useful course, very well taught, quite accessible and helpful professor.
He never responds you if he doesn't like you. When I emailed my questions, he responded "You should have no question" he doesnt respect student at all
Very useful course, very well taught. Best part: extremely practical in-class spreadsheet exercises. Very accommodating and easy to reach professor.
I loved this course for many reasons. (1) Very applied - no theory, no textbook; (2) detailed spreadsheet exercises instead of silly textbook type questions; (3) detailed, well organized lecture slides; (4) very well explained lectures; (5) very responsive & accessible professor; (6) excellent learning experience via course project. Exams were ok.
I am a first timer in Finance, but this Financial Analytics course was extremely well taught and allowed me to learn useful analytical skills. Very well taught, great lectures, very accessible and quantitatively savvy professor.
Extremely well taught course, and completely different from all undergrad and grad level finance courses I have taken. Debunks textbooks and old school theory, teaches how real time latest finance as it is, completely contemporaneous and totally applied. The in-class spreadsheet exercises are extremely useful.
