AVOID!!!! He is very hard to understand and the class is very unstructured. The homework doesn't make sense either. Even if you work in study groups, it is very unlikely that you will be able to understand it. He doesn't explain things and the lectures do not help. I struggled through this class all semester, biggest mistake yet.
Where do I start? Sudeep requires that students go to his office hours to ask questions where he will proceed to not answer questions. He doesn't answer what you ask, makes fun of you for not knowing and you leave more confused and frustrated. Very rude and pompous. Lectures don't correlate with lab often. Tested on a problem he couldn't answer.
I had him for 103 and it went so well I swore I would never take his class again, this class was listed as dep.faculty. It was horrible. Had to go to class, but didn't do any good. Puts powerpoints online, but useless. If you read the book it made sence but not sure where he got all his test questions from. If you want to ask him a question, G.L.!
I feel bad for him. He's a nice guy and he wants us to do well...but most of the time we don't. He doesn't say one sentence that is pronounced correctly, which can get VERY annoying in lecture. He gives out extra credit, and allows a notecard on the lab practical. He assumes you know more than you actually do. Always has office hours.
A really nice guy, but so difficult to understand. A very hard class, expect to do a ton of extra work unless your a chem genius. Tests are not too bad, one HW assignment per week. a few quizes, always warns you whats on it. Very hard to understand at times. Would teach better at a more advanced level I think.
I had him for the Chem 213 (summer). His lectures were well put together & the exams contained problems we did in class/on the homework (so study those). Lab was harder, especially the final project because he wasn't as clear about requirements, grading ,etc. The course is rigorous so plan well & you should be fine.
I took 103 with Sudeep. I am now in 104 with King and I have no idea what's going on! Our "review sheets" cover things we never touched on in 103. I am not sure if it is Sudeep's fault or the course itself, but we did not cover much of the material King expects us to know. Take someone else if you have to take 104 so youll actually be prepared!
The review below me is very true, I'm in the exact same boat. You must be in my class, I wonder who you are. Sudeep is an interesting guy. He wants you to learn, but will never push you or challenge you enough to make anything stick. Easy class, but as the review below mine says, if you want to learn, avoid the guy that cuts out the hard stuff.
Same as the person below me to the point, but I would also like to add that if you don't plan on going past 103 that he isn't a bad choice at all for an easy A. If you remember any of high school chemistry it will all be pretty easy.
Sometimes he is hard to understand but he will keep trying until you get what he's saying. Very helpful!! Wants everyone to do well and is willing to help as much as he can.
Sudeep is currently my 104 Lab professor with Mark Stanley as the class prof. I enjoy lab quite a bit although it can be quite long at times. He really is a great guy and is very passionate about Chemistry. He attempts to have the class learn for themselves and is always walking around helping. I'd recommend for Lab. I haven't had for lecture.
Sudeep is definitely a prof that cares. He was willing to help if you didnt understand, and if you didnt understand after he explained he would rephrase. I did get a little frustrated in lab because he would leave frequently, and if you needed help you would be stuck. A little hard to understand at times but every prof is at 8 in the morning.
Is an interesting proffessor, hard to understand at times but is an awsome proffessor. He is willing to help when needed.
Great lab teacher. Due to lab setup, varying degrees of difficulty are not his fault. Very good one-on-one and teaches a lot of material well. Indian accent is a bit of an obstacle.
nice guy, hard to understand. so very hard to understand.
absolutely horrible, if you can avoid him, do it! he's terrible beyond belief. even if you have to wait a semester so that you don't take him, do it, he's a jerk, and he'll always criticize you about so many things. He won't explain topics very well, and he still expects you to understand what he's saying and talking about. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
If you have a question, it'll need to be worked out with fellow students. He does not explain the material well, and asking for help only leads to a 20 minutes talk with little help if any. Also, he likes to make people feel stupid (in front of the whole class) if the problems are not working.
knows his stuff but is very hard to understand. doesn't like wasting time explaining things and moves very quickly through lecture.
He is a nice guy, but his teaching style hard to understand. I would not recommend him to a friend.
The absolute worst teacher of anything ever. You will be confused and frustrated beyond belief all semester. He's rude and does not explain a single thing, so if you want to get a good grade, you must read your book constantly (which i did not do). You will never know what is on any of the tests, and they are all comprehensive. Good luck i guess.
Not the easiest to understand but if you go see him one on one he does what he can to help you. Also offers extra credit to bump up your grade if you talk to him about it.
Memorization is what he wants, you dont learn anything. Characteristic thermo piston pictures were drawn once entire semester. Tells you it's trivial, or to do the math right. Self-taught class the last half with his so called "workshops" essentially an excuse for not preparing a lecture.
Very rude and difficult to understand, had to ask friends when I needed help. Didn't ask for help often, but he was very arrogant and seemed upset when I did.
This professor worked very hard to really make sure students understand the material. He really cares about the students. I would recommend this professor to a friend.
Dr. B is the best. I really enjoyed how he would help me with all of my questions, plus he is really cute.
Dr. B was awesome. His classroom fosters an experience in which there is interaction between students and the lecture. He encourages engagement and questions. An interactive environment such as this are hard to come by in college
Quant definitely isn't an easy course, and no professor is going to make it easy. But if you go to all of the lectures you should mostly get the material. Other than that Dr. B is willing to help you with anything that you don't understand. As long as you are willing to ask for help he will get you through the material just fine.
If you attend all of the lectures and honestly try on the homework you will have a good time in the course. Go to his office hours if you don't understand something, he is EXTREMELY helpful one on one and will help you understand.
Dr. Bhattacharyay is extremely helpful one-on-one. He will make you work a little bit in any of his classes, but he will do his best to help you along the way. He checks his email almost constantly, so if you send him an email, he will get back to almost immediately. If you are every struggling, just go talk to him.
If you have him on your schedule I would encourage you to switch. He is very rude, unhelpful and very hard to understand. If someone asks a question in class, he either gets angry and explains it(rudely) or just ignores the student. If you try to get help one on one he will say he cannot help you because it is your homework that you have to do.
Avoid him at all costs unless you are a chemistry major. Smart guy but doesn't convey information well. English is poor making him very difficult to understand. Doesn't like to answer questions and rarely gives straight answers. No interest in improving student's grades even when the class average is well under 50 percent on exams
Dr. B's lectures are more confusing than actually helpful and expects students to catch on without explaining himself properly. He does seemingly random derivations all lecture and does a very poor job of explaining himself. Avoid if you want to actually learn the material without having to do it yourself.
Bhattacharyay did not have a strong command of the material. He also did not seem to respect the students very well.
Lectures were quite confusing and hard to follow at times. If it wasn't for my tutor I definitely would not have received an A in this class. I would not recommend taking him because he lectures were so hard to follow.
Lectures are terrible. He's all over the place and it's incredibly hard to follow. A lot of OWL assignments. I learned more from OWL and the Text Book than I did from his lectures. He's a good person but a TERRIBLE lecturer.
I have never had a professor as horrible as Dr.B. He disrespects his students and unlike every other professor on campus, he would rather see you fail then help you succeed. He takes attendance during lecture and even though it says attendance will not affect your grade, he makes it effect you in any way he possible can. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!!!
Very disappointing prof. He is condescending and disrespectful to students. Avoid.
I had him for 115 lab in the fall of 13'. This review is pretty late, but i feel like he deserves a little better then these reviews. He is extremely helpful if you ask for it, and all though his lectures are confusing, you get used to his teaching style and slight accent. He is a really good guy and you just need to ask for help and do the work!
Prof. Bhattacharyay is a great person but unfortunately he isn't a good professor. His lectures are confusing and long. The exams were very difficult. He gives study guides before the exam but often times there were errors on them. I found myself memorizing answers rather than actually understand the material.
He expects a lot but great professor. Not a baby sitter. Tough class but a more advanced class. Prepares you for the future, not spoon feed info
Dr. B. is a good person, but gives very disorganized lectures. He assigns a lot of homework, but in this case, that's a good thing because I learned way more from the homework than I did from him. In lab, he wanders away and is unclear. However, if you do the study guides you will do very well on the tests.
Dr B. was a decent professor. He is extremely smart and knows his chemistry. Unfortunately, he is sometimes hard to understand. Tests are difficult, but if you do well on the OWL assignments it can make up for it. He didn't want to curve the final grade, but did after some arguments. Not horrible, but try to avoid if able.
Very smart guy. The subject is difficult, but he tries his best to help you understand it. He is a fairly easy grader
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Mr. B does not teach any material in lecture and goes off on tangents often. He also refuses to answer questions and assumes everyone understands what he is saying. If you want a good grade do not take this class. He is rude to students and does not have any sort of lecture notes. He just talks and expects you to understand.
He doesnt know how to teach this class and will let students fail. Do NOT take him if you dont have to. You will have to teach yourself the material or fail.
DONT take this class you will learn nothing. It is terrible. Nobody knows what's going on. You will literally want to die.
By far the worst professor I've ever had. Not only is he terrible at teaching and answering questions, but he is also arrogant and extremely difficult to work with on anything. He makes you feel stupid when you ask a question and I've even gotten the response "it's easy and not my responsibility to help you understand it - it is yours"
Sudeep ruined chemistry for me. His lectures are difficult to follow and he take no accountability. He expects you to know information after mentioning it briefly once. If you need a clarification he says things along the lines of "it's your responsibility to know these things" or "you clearly didn't pay attention". Only reason I passed was the SI.
At first he seems cheery and positive, but don't be fooled. He is egotistical and passive agressive. I would not recommend him to anyone. If he's the last professor left for chem 109, wait a semester. If you want to actually understand the subject, find someone else.
Very bad at explaining concepts, blames the entire class for not being able to preform well on his exams and quizzes, does not answer questions in class clearly.
Half the class has dropped this class. I feel like Im drowning and Ill never pass with a decent grade.
Do NOT take this professor if you dont have to. Hes very rude and doesnt know how to teach the material, and takes no responsibility for his class not knowing the material. He will treat you like youre stupid if you ask for help. He does not care if his students fail. You will have to teach yourself all of the material if you want to pass.
I am a chemistry major and Sudeep literally made me hate chemistry. On top of him not knowing how to teach and explain the material or understanding it for himself, hes very demeaning and rude to his students.
Sudeep is very mean and degrading towards his students. Doesnt know how to teach, doesnt take responsibility for not being a good teacher.
Someone just tried to ask a question in class. He pretty much yelled at her for having a question. I think thats enough said.
Im recreating 13 reasons why and dedicating 12/13 tapes to sudeep
The class average on the last exam was a 40%. He didnt curve it or do anything to help his student do better. Instead of accepting responsibility for his classes poor performance, he blames us and claims that we arent working hard enough. The questions on his exams and quizzes are super hard and he doesnt even know how to solve them in class.
Literally the worst teacher Ive ever had for any class ever.
Dr. B says if you get a D in his class thats good. You need a C+ to even pass.
Pros: offered a decent amount of extra credit during my semester Cons: extremely disorganized and counterproductive lectures, disrespectful to questions asked in class, if you don't read word for word every chapter you WILL NOT pass (cannot stress enough), will not change his methods despite class averages and evaluations Overall: avoid for sanity
Dr. Bs entire class is failing and the only thing he has to say is this course is challenging.
The average score on Exam 2 was a 47%, he won't curve it because it's our fault we didn't study hard enough. I don't recommend him.
I can promise you a failing grade and a drop in your mental health... Still wanna take chem 109 with sudeep?
His lectures are sporadic and confusing. No wiggle room to make up assignments. The class average on the last exam was 46%. You teach yourself in the textbook, all he does in lecture is practice problems from the book on the board.
Sudeep to our class: we didnt go over this but I thought you could figure it out on your own. Oh and its gonna be on the quiz today so good luck
Dr. B just sent an email to our whole class. Heres what it said: The class average is a D+ right now. I guess thats a little lower than expected
I wonder if Sudeep actually cares enough to read these ratings. Lmao who am I kidding? Of course he doesnt.
Lectures make literally no sense. Dr. B doesnt even understand his own lectures.
Dr. B is currently failing our entire class and doing nothing to help us out.
Waiting for the chem department to actually care about the students and do something about Dr. B being allowed to fail his entire class. Waste of my time and money. Honestly makes me wonder about the university as a whole.
You wont pass somebody fire this man
Dr B was very knowledgeable and passionate about chemistry. His lectures could be confusing to follow and although he's very smart he was not the best at teaching the material. However, he was well-meaning and available to help students with any questions. He also offered lots of extra credit assignments and take-home exams and graded HW easily
Dr. B is truly a nice and caring professor. His courses are definitely tough, but he is always willing to help explain information in more detail. Do not be afraid to go to office hours because he is really helpful them. Dr. B gives a lot of extra credit and wants you to get more involved with learning outside of your regular classes.
Dr. B is very smart and makes himself available, but his lectures can be difficult to follow. A lot of the learning you have to do on your own. He gave us the opportunity to redo assignments and exams to get points back, which really saved my grade. You really have to stay on top of coursework or else you can easily fall behind.
Dr. Bhattacharyay is a very caring professor who is willing to work with you outside of class. Take advantage of his office hours to improve your understanding. He is not the best lecturer I've had, but he made up for it by providing recorded lectures and one-on-one help. He included us in original computational research. I highly recommend this.
Sudeep should only be allowed to teach 400-level chemistry classes, because that's how he treats his 109 students. He expects everyone to know complex topics off the top of their heads, and is terrible at explaining simple topics. He makes things more complicated than they need to be. He's also very unorganized and inconsistent with content.
Dr. Bhattacharyay is a very caring and driven to help students succeed. His lectures are sometimes hard to follow, but he provides recorded videos and one-on-one help outside of class. Take advantage of his office hours. I only withdrew because I was taking the class remotely during COVID and it was too difficult to do that way. HIGHLY recommend.
I had Dr. B for lab and while he is a nice professor, it can be very difficult to understand what he is saying. He doesnt explain what you need to do for labs so I was confused the whole time. If youre taking chem 109 make sure to get Dr. Dahl for lab not him
Avoid this prof at all costs. Dr. B gives little to no instruction during lab, when asked a question he tells you to figure it out yourself. Inconsistent grader my lab group would have the exact same thing written down and somebody would get an 8/10 while somebody else would get a 5/10 on the labs.
Dr. B tends to grade assignments on completion instead of accuracy because he runs out of time for grading. He is a bit hard to understand and does not explain the labs thoroughly or lecture clearly. If you ask him for help, he will either be glad to help you or be angry that you didn't listen to what he supposedly said.
He does not explain anything well, and it always seems that he does not understand what is going on. He has a hard time conveying what he means to the class. Whenever we ask questions during lab, it seems that he himself does not even know what we are doing at times and has to read through the entire thing egain.
Expect your lab to look a lot different than everyone else's. Sometimes we would come to lab and he would make up his own lab and not even glance at the lab manual-LOL. If you care about his class and get your work done, you will have a mutual relationship of respect. Dr. B's Friday labs brought a lot of joy to my life- would take again.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He has a very heavy accent which is hard to understand if you dont understand the lecture material. His turn around time for quizzes and assignments is also extremely slow with little to no feedback on any of it.
A lot of other ratings say that Dr. B has a strong accent making him impossible to understand, however I disagree; he is from India, however if you pay attention to context clues the rest is easy enough to understand. He is extremely passionate about his work (which I absolutely love) and is EXTREMELY knowledgeable in his field of expertise.
Degrades students for asking questions. Will give different students different grades for the same work. Thick accent makes the little instruction impossible to understand. Class averages are regularly in 40-50% and he takes no responsibility and doesn't change anything to help students. Don't understand how people like this have jobs professing.
While he's a little difficult to understand at times he's clearly very passionate about the subject. I think he grades things fairly although you'll never receive feedback.
The class material is tough itself, and I took a lot of time outside of class to understand it. He can be difficult to follow in lecture, but he's very helpful during office hours and clearly loves what he does, especially talking about it. Computation screening of molecules in lab, which almost never work but was interesting nonetheless. He cares!
good guy very fun and makes alot of jokes he is a good lab to have because hes chill but is bad at explaining things.
Be expected to do a lot of homework that doesn't make sense. Prof Bhattacharyay doesn't clearly explain what is expected of you in homework and reports. It's hard to understand his thick Indian accent. Expected to have a clear basis of chemistry and know how to write professional scientific papers. However, professor emails back in a timely manner.
