If you have trouble with math, get Professor Allen. She is a really nice person, and she even helps students out in the Math Learning Center, so if you don’t understand the subject you can get help later on right from your professor. She is a very dedicated teacher.
Take this teacher. Mrs. Allen is the greatest college teacher I have ever had. She explains things so you can understand why. She is also just a genuinely nice person and fun to be around. I strongly recommend taking her whenever possible.
If math is your weakest link, take sue allen. She is so sweet.
math sucks but i couldnt ask for a better teacher
Sue Allen is the most awesome teacher I have ever had. You should definitely take her if you have to take any math classes.
Hate math, but if you fail or do poorly, it's your own falut. She's a great teacher and provides great resourses...notes emailed to you to be printed out the day before class so you don't have to write a lot during lecture
I love Professor Allen! She makes trig fun
I love this professor. She's hilarious and makes cheesy jokes during class but it's still funny because she's just hilarious in general. She makes math easy to learn and she's extremely nice if you ask her a question, i love her. go sue!!
Sue Allen is a very good math teacher, all you really have to do is the book work and you'll do good on her tests.
She's an awesome teacher. Explains things really well. I def. recommend her for MTH 103!
Very nice and helpful lady. I do not enjoy math, but she made the experience a good one.
Tends to spend unnecessary amounts of time on some sections and always ends up rushing her lesson as time starts running out. However, all in all, she's a good professor who is clear and straightforward!
Super friendly. Didn't use my book once. Sends the notes to you and makes them organized, all you have to do is fill them in. Tends to rush at the end of lecture. I hate math but she made it less painful and is always available to help.
Easy class. As long as you attend most lectures you are likely to get a good grade. Allen is willing to answer any questions and explain material.
Easy class to pass if you just show up for notes. Really nice teacher, explains everything. Don't need the text unless you want extra help.
Funny, friendly, great.
I love Sue Allen. She is my favorite professor. She makes math easy and fun. She always cracks jokes, and makes me laugh. She has the cutest dimples and the softest smile. She makes me want to take MTH 103 twice. I love her so much. I definetly recommend her!
Doesn't review and flies through the lectures! AWFUL!!!!!! DONT TAKE! Recitation is quizzes and exams and unless you get a great TA you will never review! DONT TAKE!
I loved Sue Allen. She is very personable and very approachable. She answers any questions you might have and she explains the notes well.
The class isn't necessary to go to as long as you get the notes. Make sure to do the webwork, it's pretty easy and helps a lot. The textbook is very unneeded except for the practice exams, so make a friend who has it. Go to all quizzes, the recitation does help!
I loved her! She is awesome. Phenomenal teacher and makes the cutest stupid jokes.
Sue is a great lady and a great teacher. The class itself is rather fact-paced, but she makes it manageable, and the overall material is not too hard; there is just a plethora of material at all times.
She's a really awesome person and there to help. As long as you go to the lectures and take notes you'll do fine. A practice exam is sent out before every exam and it's just like the exam except with different numbers. Easy 4.0 DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK, SHE EVEN SAYS YOU DON'T NEED IT
Really easy class, pretty much just review everything learned in high school. Don't buy the book unless you really need help with math. I like the professor a lot, she's very sweet and funny.
Sue Allen is my favorite professor! She is very helpful and clarifies everything if needed! Everyone knows she is a sweetheart! Her lectures are short. Her class was very easy for me as well. I didn't buy the textbook and you definitely do NOT need it. (unless you really struggle with math, because it just gives extra problems)
Makes constant mistake during lectures, exams often have questions not covered in the sections.
Sue Allen is very good at explaining how to do problems and has good notes that will help you loads with webwork and tests. Always there to help before and after lectures, very friendly woman.
I really like Sue Allen as a person and a teacher. If you have to pick a professor for math I would recommend her. My only complaint about the course was that we had a test or quiz every week, so if you are not good at testing chose a different course.
Sue Allen is a very good professor for MTH 103! She is very helpful and has a great sense of humor! Easy to get along with and have a conversation with. Would definitely recommend her for MTH 103!
Very clear lectures, lenient, hilarious ( a must for an early class), and her grading is very fair.
She's a great teacher. I am terrible at math but I still managed a 3.0. I suggest attending all lectures and taking notes. Do webwork the same day as the lecture so it is easier. If you struggle GO TO OFFICE HOURS or MLC! She will help you with your homework and with your grades. She gives practice problems that aren't due, but really help.
Professor Allen is great! She's always happy and you can always ask her for help (or the MLC, they're great). Her notes and lecture are EXTREMELY helpful and she's willing to explain things as many times as you need. The work load isn't bad at all, and if you just do the practice problems and the math homework, you'll be fine on tests and quizzes.
Prof. Allen is very sweet and nice. Her lectures are not quick but not too slow. She usually keeps pace with her timeframe so don't expect getting out early. 4 exams and 1 final, 7 quizzes, and 28 homework assignments. If you don't make it to class, you can get the lecture notes at MLC.
sue allen is the best math professor that i have ever taken! she is so caring and will respond to any questions that you may have. although I'm not doing well in the class (I'm not good at math), she makes it easy to learn! i would take her again!
She was kind and joked in class but also got stuff done. She always explained the material very clearly. Overall enjoyed the class and loved Mrs. Allen.
For this being my first college math class, Professor Allen did a great job of making the transition from high school math to college math as smooth as possible. The material is difficult at times, but her lectures are easy to follow and she teaches at a good pace. She is a sweet lady and makes math as enjoyable as it can be!
Sue is a really great teacher. Thorough, easy to understand, is willing to take questions, and wants you to do well. I strongly recommend her.
She speeds through the lectures but is willing to stop and answer any questions. I like that she thoroughly explains subjects but as someone who naturally struggles with math I asked her a lot of questions after class and usually fell behind. The WebWork was due way too often and I always felt behind. I spent a lot of time in the MLC.
This class is just super boring in general. Unless you live and breath math then you probably won't get a kick out of this one. Allen is nice nothing really negative to say about her.
She's really sweet and helpful and has good pace during lectures.
She will not budge on final grade even if 0.1% away. Ruined my GPA
Got a 4.0 and never bought or used the textbook. Not hard stuff if you pay attention in lecture. WebWork was horrible though, worst part about the class.
They drop the 2 lowest quiz grades and they're easy. Exams are NOTHING like the practice exams. Exams consist of random things and the WebWork is easily the worst part. You could study for hours and get 70's, which i guess is good since it was normal for people to get 30's. My TA was much more helpful and clear when explaining. Textbook isn't used
Liked her abs a person and a prof, it felt like she really wanted everyone to succeed. The class wasnt very challenging but it was a lot of homework and quizzes all the time.
Math is hard! But prof Allen makes it easier to understand and takes it slow, it also helps that shes funny and relates the material to something interesting about MSU most of the time! Make sure you print out the notes and bring them to class, those are very helpful with the online homework and studying for quizzes and exams
One of best online professors I have ever had. Her lecture videos are very helpful. And the exam questions come from everything she teaches. if you are required to take MTH 103, I highly recommend you take her online summer class to get those credits out the way. I could go on and on explaining how great prof. Allen is but Im going to stop here :)
Really good teacher. I barely went to class and thats on me but you really dont need to. All of the notes are online and you can watch videos to understand things you didnt get from the notes. Good at office hours and very helpful. Super sweet lady.
Professor Allen is AMAZING. She's such a sweet lady who is an amazing teacher!! She's always willing to help, and she explains everything thoroughly. She cracks jokes during class and as boring as math can be, her class is the opposite!
Lectures are hard to pay attention to. She skips over a majority of the notes and doesn't go into detail on what she does cover. Cares more about completing notes in time than if the class actually understands. WebWork is nothing like the content of the notes or the exams. If you don't do good on the exams you're screwed bc that's half your grade.
Lots of webwork and quizzes, tough grader when it comes to credit on those quizzes, but she does want you to succeed.
Sue Allen is a great choice for a math teacher! I loved the was she taught and how she really cares if you do well in the class. She actually cares if you understand the material being taught. I highly recommend taking her class!
If you took precalculus in high school, this class should be fairly easy. Quizzes every Friday, though, and a lot of Webwork. Webwork was probably the worst thing about this class honestly, exams were not too bad as long as you look over your notes. Class is not really that necessary, all of the notes are online.
Get ready to teach yourself because she'll show easy examples of how to find the solutions but then the webwork will be completely different. Thank god the quizzes were easier.
Excruciatingly long and boring lectures with weekly homework that can barely be completed and has little to do with what she teaches. She's not very sympathetic and refused to round up .01% to go up a grade. She doesn't take attendance and that's probably the only good thing I can say about her.
Sue Allen is a good professor that gives students every opportunity to succeed. In-class lectures give you a base knowledge of subjects but the webwork includes more challenging problems that you will likely have to get help with. As long as you come to class and do the homework the class should be a breeze.
She teaches "simple" things that most students have learned already in high School. This should make her class an easy A, but the way she teaches makes everything more confusing. Some examples of this are when a girl raised her hand asking how she got a certain number in a problem she said "I Just know that"
She gets really irritated if you ask her a basic question and she goes over notes REALLY fast
If you have the choice, don't take Professor Allen's class. She makes you feel stupid for asking questions and often makes mistakes while solving problems during the lecture. She makes simple concepts complex and moves through lectures very fast because it's more important that she covers as much material as possible than if students understand it.
I would not recommend Professor Allen to anyone and would avoid taking her course(s). She moves extremely quickly through her lectures and often makes several errors while teaching the material. She also focuses too much on how many people are showing up to class rather than putting her energy into properly teaching the students that do show up.
Sue Allen is a less than mediocre professor. She moves through her lectures VERY fast and does not care to go back to any of the concepts to make sure you understand. She always overcomplicated very simple concepts during lectures. This class is not graded on a curve so you have to work for your grade. I basically taught the whole class to myself.
Professor Allen is a very nice person, awful teacher. I never skipped a lecture, went to MLC weekly, and had a paid tutor. Her reviews that she gives aren't even made by her and not even remotely close to her exams. She goes through lectures too fast and the problems she shows us are the easiest ones possible. If you take her prepare to fail.
If I could give her anything lower I would. She doesn't know hoe to teach. half the time the paper isn't even visible to the class and she is always making mistakes. She always makes you teach yourself and ends up hitting you with a hard test. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS UNLESS YOU WANNA DIG YOURSELF IN A HOLE!!!!! p.s. she can be very rude sometimes
Sue Allen knows her math. She moves quickly because she's been doing this for ages. It is your job to show up to class and try. There are times when she accidentally flips the screen or forgets to move her paper down while teaching--which is frustrating. However, focus on the notes for exams and not the webwork and you will pass with a good grade.
I went to every single lecture, recitation, review session, and frequented the MLC along with having a paid tutor -- and even still struggled greatly in the class. Allen goes through lecture materials way too quickly and ends up making multiple mistakes. Lectures, webwork, quizzes, practice exams, and actual exams are all so different. Avoid.
She puts all of the notes online and quizzes are fairly easy. She gave exam #3 six days before the final exam. She also gets very upset people talking in class and would call them out for it.
She does know what she is doing, however, she goes through the notes to fast or too slowly and will try to speed it up towards the end if shes running behind which leads you to learning nothing about what is being taught.
Professor Allen is not a good math teacher. She was not deliberate in lectures and made many mistakes in her work, which caused me to be very confused. She also assigns a lot of webwork assignments that are much harder than the problems we did in lecture. The worst part was, she's so bad that her OH are always full and its hard to get help. AVOID.
Prof Allen is getting a bad rep because she teaches math and most students struggle with math. I wouldn't avoid her just because the class is difficult. As long as you show up and put in work outside of class you should be ok. The webwork is difficult but is more about practicing the material. Her class isn't easy, but college isnt meant to be easy
She rushes through everything and notes from class aren't easy to apply to homework or quizzes
Professor Allen is extremely nice and caring. If you need help she is more than willing to help during office hours. Print out the weekly lecture notes on D2L because it is easier to follow along. Make sure to study your lecture notes before exams and quizzes. There was a lot of homework, but just use piazza and it can be really easy.
I had quizzes every week except for the weeks I had exams! Lectures not mandatory but recitation is!
Prof Allen was helpful considering how many help sessions she held before exams but she simply made MTH103 way harder than it needed to be. She has little sympathy for her students and was very rude to me and those who had questions during recitation. The exams were quite difficult and the webwork was brutal. Avoid class if you struggle with math!
One of the toughest Professors I had this past semester. Homework was easy to understand and get credit for but the exams were graded tough-every little detail to each problem needed to be shown. However, the lectures were really easy to understand. Technology issues were not excusable in the class (which was difficult when everything was online)
This class was the best. I took ap calc in high school but wanted an easier math class and this was the move for sure. She was so understanding and accommodating in regards to the pandemic. Had a bunch of help sessions and answered emails fast if you needed extra help. Definitely a teacher who wants her students to succeed, 10/10 would recommend.
Do not take mth 103 with Sue Allen. This is the hardest class I have ever taken and I ultimately ended up dropping it. Quizzes and exams are very difficult and nothing like the study guides given. Beware
Loved Professor Allen, probably the professor that cares about her students the most out of all the professors I have had. She goes out of her way to send review videos, finished notes, and ensure her students are ready for upcoming exams and quizzes. Not a super difficult class just follow along with notes and spend some time reviewing before exam
The class overall shouldn't have been as hard as it was, I did not talk to one person throughout the semester that was doing well in the class, so clearly there's a problem deeper than our understanding of the class. Also, the fact she isn't providing an exam prep for the final is absolutely ridiculous. Good luck if you have to take this class.
doesnt teach you and blames the students for failing, i am currently in this course and I know maybe 2 people who are passing
The instruction was hard to understand at best, completely incompetent at worst, The TA and Professor are not hard-working when it comes to review and aren't even making a comprehensive review for the final, there was content on the last exam that wasn't in the lectures, recitation, or review. I wish I had more space to say what I want to.
So, I am taking this math course for the first time my first year here and a lot of people agree that her teaching is to fast to the point where you can't retain any information. I have always been a straight A student, but somehow have a D in her class. As a professor I think she's ok, but she can d better for sure. She doesn't really explain.
She is the worst professor at MSU. She doesnt care if you pass or fail and she can't teach anything. Don't take her class.
Ive never struggled in math before until Math 103. Prof. Allen DOES NOT CARE if you fail. Lack of communication and help in this class. Tests are significantly harder than any review that is given, almost like she wants you to fail. I would NOT recommend taking this class at MSU and I will be retaking the course at my local community college.
You do not need to attend lectures, and all notes are posted outside of class. If you are not familiar with the material already you need to attend lecture! All exams have reviews that are almost identical to the tests. Next to impossible not to do well in this class.
Prof Allen isnt too bad. She helps with webwork if needed and answers general questions. About half the exams/quizzes are nothing like the notes or reviews though and its frustrating.
Sue Allen wasn't a terrible teacher but the entire MSU math department needs work. The lectures are 10x easier than what is actually on the quizzes and exams and the 20 minute time limit for quizzes and 50 minute time limit for exams are so stressful and adds more pressure to a class I already struggle in.
I was advised to take this course, but I didn't listen and im fighting for my life before my exam tomorrow at 10:20. Do not take this course please listen
Whatever you do, please do not take this class. I ended with a B average in math in high school and now I am fighting for my grade and spend almost every night crying. The math department does not care about you at all. The tests are significantly harder than what we are taught and Prof Allen gets rude if you ask her simple questions. STAY AWAY.
This class is taught by amazing teachers, but I think that the curriculum was horrible.
I would rather eat a bowl of gravel than take this class again. Instructor just does rather than teaches. If you bring the printed notes to class and are trying to follow along and fill them out, good luck. She goes so fast, by the time you're done copying down a problem, she'll be half way through the next one. Tests are WAY harder than the notes.
I am usually a straight A student and this was the only class I didn't 4.0 in. Ruined my gpa. If you don't attend her lectures (which are fast and don't help at all) you have to watch Griffens lectures which made me feel like I was having a stroke. My TA was also no help. Tests every Friday and no matter how hard you study you will never get 100%.
I never went in person to a lecture, because I could never pay attention. Exams and quizzes are always more difficult than what you learn in lecture, no extra credit, but you do get drops. Overall wasnt the worst ever, but wouldnt recommend if you cant learn at a fast rate!
I had to watch the other teachers lectures to understand the material.
If you want to do well go to lectures and print the notes she gives you. You can also drop 2 quizzes and 1 exam which is nice. She teaches at a very good pace, just stay on top of notes and homework and you will be fine. Definitely recommend and would take again.
I took more notes in class than I learned. If you want to learn whats going on, you need to go back and read your notes over and over again, or watch another professors videos. Her class is also very fast-paced. Then theres all the hw on webwork, which has a registration fee. Ive also pulled all-nighters studying for exams.
Bad teacher lectures are forever long and if you miss even one you can guarantee yourself that you will fail the quiz. So much stuff to do and you have to take time out of you testing to scan your documents turn them into a pdf and turn them in online. I would never take her again she was absolutely no help. If you can't learn fast don't take it.
MTH103 is a large class at MSU so it is hard for Professor Allen to make connections with the students unless they reach out to her. With hard work and studying you CAN 4.0 this class. I attended the math learning center and focused on the first 3 exams so I did not have to take the cumulative final.
Prof Allen really cares about her students and she stays after almost every lecture to help students who have questions. However, if you do not put in the effort to actually learn the material then the homework will be very difficult to complete. All lectures are recorded, so attendance isn't necessarily mandatory but is heavily encouraged.
She works really well with student-athletes. Is always available and helpful in office hours. Super calm and kind!
Professor Allen was nice but since the lectures are so big it's not easy at all to build any connections. I think she taught well during the lectures. You don't have to go to the lectures but the class will be a lot harder so you should go. If you don't study or work hard, you'll barely pass or even fail so you really have to put the work in.
Professor Allen was very kind and seemed willing to help me if I needed it, but her lectures consist of her quickly filling out notes, with very little explaining. I am a step by step learner with math, and Sue pretty regularly neglected to clearly explain what she was doing. Anyone can read over completed math notes. I needed someone to TEACH me
She wants you to do well, you just have to put in time.
She is very kind and always wants to help students. She loves to get questions and feedback about her lectures. Just go to lecture and do the homework and you'll be fine!
I hope to never have to take her again. Her exams were never like the study guides or homework we had every week. I went to office hours and she wasn't helpful whatsoever. I wouldn't recommend her at all.
This class was unusually difficult. This class is a pre-rec for stats and stats is 10000x easier. The lectures move super quickly and are not easy to understand. All of the concepts should be easy but they are way overexplanined and overcomplicated. Not to mention there are tests every single friday. If you can test out of this class DO IT.
Professor was very nice and thorough, however, you have to pay to access the homework and pay to print out the notes because it's basically required if you want to pass the class. And attend MLC. The online program, webwork, is often different/harder material than covered in class. Overall very angering, but the material isn't hard.
Easy class, pay attention.
Just show up to lectures and do your webwork and its a fairly easy class. -She's a pretty easy teacher but an easy class
-SUCH A HARD CLASS -attendance taken via iclicker -if you don't go to class you miss so much -webwork is horrible -does not explain how you get to an answer or why it works the way it does
Honestly, she isn't the worst professor I've had, but the Math Department at MSU is lacking. Classes last too short to absorb any useful information, and by the time you're done you walk out knowing nothing. It's not difficult if you're able to go over the information yourself, (and make corrections to stuff she did wrong,) but it wastes time.
hardest math class ever with short confusing lectures. webwork did not help learn material, exams are difficult. failed first 2 exams even with 100% on all assignments and attending MLC, ended up failing the class because i couldn't get 100% on the others. math department at msu needs work.
She is an elderly woman who needs to retire. Makes a lot of mistakes during lecture, such as writes and solves problems incorrectly, and forgets to turn on her microphone until reminded by a student. Does not allow more than four unexcused absences or she will automatically fail you and all lectures/recitations take attendance.
The worst professor I have ever had forgets what she is doing every 5 minutes attendance is mandatory even though you're listening to a brick wall give information thinks students fail assessments because they don't go to office hours even though most peers I know end up back at their dorms and watch a different professor teach it via lecture video
There is no leniency whatsoever for attendance but the lectures are pointless. Everything is on webwork, w/ 4 exams and a quiz almost every week. She's so boring, it's so bad and I've fallen asleep in this class more than I've learned in it. Assignments are due at 7 am which is the weirdest thing I've ever heard of. You have to pay to do homework.
Absolutely horrible. Never explains anything thoroughly, but has many opportunities for hep like office hours. Rambles in her lectures so much that sometimes you have to watch the rest of the lecture through video. If I had to take this class again, I would take it with Shannon Griffen.
This was a tough class but don't be scared by the other reviews. I went to MLC like once-twice a week and attended office hours before her exams and am passing with a 4.0. You will need to print out the notes and iclicker into class but you can drop two categories that go to your grade which can be exams! Webwork is very hard for no reason though.
For an algebra class it was surprisingly difficult. The lecture do not do much teaching, rather they are just the professor quickly rushing through a page of notes. There is lots of online homework, and quizzes and or exams very often. This class requires an unnecessary amount of additional learning outside of class.
Professor Allen is a nice professor who is available outside of class for help during her office hour and holds review sessions. However, students are given quizzes every single Friday before they're able to even digest the information that is blown through in class. Additionally, the exam reviews are never representative of the actual exam.
Professor Allen is such a sweet lady and she definitely cares about the well-being of her students. But this class was really hard for an algebra class. Students are given quizzes every single Friday before even having the chance to actually learn the material. Be prepared to spend hours of your free time trying to pass this class.
If you are taking MTH 103, Sue Allen is the go-to professor. Out of all the math professors, Sue Allen is the nicest, most considerate, easiest, and most helpful. She helps you prepare for quizzes and exams better. She will go out of her way to help students. You have to pay attention and not talk to people around you because she'll call you out.
Ahhhhh, this might've been the worst class i've ever taken. Be prepared future students. If you're not already good at math, you will not get any better while taking this class. If you don't want to tank your gpa because of one class.. get a private tutor. Everybody knows at MSU that the math department is a travesty, i just became another victim.
The class is a lot harder than what you would expect for a college algebra. Lots of homework and quizzes pretty much every Friday which gets really overwhelming. Also, I had a university approved absence form and she was my only prof who would not give me an excused absence, even though the university approved it
make sure to go to office hours and it is more helpful than the lectures.
Sue Allen is a super nice professor! However, I probably would not take one of her classes again. She would constantly make mistakes on the notes and a student would have to raise their hand and correct her. She is a bit dull but I don't think that is her fault because the class is super hard to make fun and engaging.
Lots of homework, as well this teacher would always go ahead of what the quizzes would be on , taking this class just piles more and more stress like never before, students would always have to correct the professor as well, this class was required for me and I would never take it again.
Almost never paid attention to classes but managed my way through by watching the online lectures that is provided for everyone, really recommend them if you're slow with math like me. She replied to emails and had a very clear criteria that included the ability to drop 2 out of 7 categories including exams. Webwork doesn't help so dont rely on it.
Professor Allen was kind of all over the place. She was very sweet and I really like her as a person, but not as a teacher. There were quizzes basically every Friday, and I always had to watch the recorded lessons from the other professor because she either never finished the notes in class, or didn't really explain anything thoroughly.
old school in my opinion, nice lady, not so great teacher, very fast pace
Took MTH 103. Too fast, did not explain a lot of things thoroughly. Came in with a basic knowledge of algebra, but wanted to take it again to review before going into 124. Did not help.
I would avoid this class. Sue Allen is a nice professor, but she constantly messes up in lectures and her students have to correct her, making the whole lecture 10x more confusing. The homework (webwork) wasn't related and was much harder than what we learned in class. Used photo math for the majority of the semester. Practice exams were the exams
Really important to participate in class! Prof. Allen is such a sweetheart and is SUPER passionate about the content she teaches. Her students are mostly freshmen (I am a junior) and they don't realize that professors can make errors sometimes. She's super helpful with questions! I'm someone who NEVER understood math until she taught it to me!
Hard professor to understand. There are better and easier professors to understand. The homework was heavy and not easy to understand. She was also very short with you.
The lectures were long and unengaging, Professor Allen would often make mistakes and erase or correct the notes that she was teaching us. The class used iClicker, so attendance was mandatory and graded. I did not enjoy this class at all, content was barely taught but was expected to be known. One of the worst classes I have taken.
Mth103 as a whole is a disaster at MSU, so I wouldn't put all of the blame on the professors. Professor Allen tries her best to teach this content however, the time constraints of this class make it difficult to thoroughly develop an understanding. GO TO OFFICE HOURS, she is willing to reexplain content that you might be struggling with. LOTS of HW
I retook this class as a sophomore after getting a 2.5 the first time. Allen is an amazing professor that treats you like family! I spent a lot of time in the MLC to quickly finish the homework. To succeed you need to attend class, STUDY, and pay attention when she says something could be on a quiz or exam. Very straightforward class, loved her!!
she constantly messes up in each lecture which makes it extremely difficult to follow along. she also gives a quiz every week and the homework is heavy and usually way harder than what is taught in the lectures.
Professor Allen is a good teacher, but this class is very test/quiz heavy. You have a quiz almost every week and the grading is very nit-picky. Its very hard to stay confident in this class. The homework assignments are not bad at all. The professor is very sweet and has a kind soul. Ask for help if you need it.
Professor Allen is amazing for MTH103! Right from the start she was very caring and wanted all of her students to pass this class. She has office hours 3 times a week and will answer any question you have for her. She truly cares about her students! YOU JUST HAVE TO PARTICIPATE! How to pass? 1. Do homework. 2. Print notes 3. Go to class. Got a 4.0
I loved her, very much sweet grandma vibes. Provided lots of help with many office hours and an exam review session per unit. There was a decent amount of homework but thats expected in a math course. Do your homework, pay attention, and study, and youll be fine
Sue seems like a nice person, but she needs to stop teaching. She doesn't make sense, makes tons of mistakes, coughs every 5 seconds, and gives insane amounts of homework. My roommate and I ended up watching lectures from another Prof just to understand what we were doing. I really don't recommend taking MTH103 with Sue if you can help it.
Key to passing the class is going to lecture. Prof is very nice and has lots of office hours and tries to help. It can be a bit frustrating when she often makes mistakes during lecture. I think she's a nice person, but should retire soon. HW is harder than actual tests/quizzes. Do the work and you'll be fine.
Dont take math 103 in general it is a GPA killer.
Sue Allen loves her students, and genuinely cares for their success in this class. I couldn't of asked for a better professor to kick off my start to college. Yes there's a lot of homework, but if you want to pass that's mandatory. Loved this class even though I might not be the best at math. She provides plenty of help to prepare for exams.
Shes too old to be teaching, cant get through one lecture without her messing up and having to go back and correct her own work, sweet lady, but needs to retire. Go to lectures, do webwork, go to math learning center, and use the practice exam to study for exams. Sometimes she passes an attendance sheet around, but again is too old to remember.
Professor Allen really cares about her students! She sometimes makes mistakes during her lectures but it didn't really bother me. She held review sessions outside of class to help with quizzes and exams. She really is the sweetest person and was a great start for my college journey ! To pass you'll NEED to take notes and understand the homework!
Professor Allen is so caring and wants all of her students to succeed. The notes were very easy to follow and the quizzes and exams were very similar to the notes in the lecture. The homework on the other hand is a bit harder than what you learn in the lecture so don't get discouraged if you can't get the correct answer to every question.
This class wasn't very difficult for me as long as you keep up with the notes and webwork assigned. There is usually a quiz every Friday for this course. Prof Allen is super sweet and takes her time but does occasionally mess up but is usually able to catch it. I will say is that she isn't usually to fit in all of the content in the time she has.
Sue really does care about her students and it helps to make your face known. Go to office hours and get to know her. She is the sweetest and wants to see people succeed. I didn't even do well in the class, math is not my strong suit, but she really tried to help me understand and is overall so nice. Don't listen to people. I 10/10 recommend her.
Professor Allen is very sweet. She does make mistakes in her lectures often but catches them quickly. I found it most helpful to watch the recorded lectures when studying and rewrite my notes. My ULA had a heavy accent which made it hard to understand sometimes. I felt like I taught myself a lot in this class. Watch the video review before exams
Sue is a great person and she cares about her students and math. However, she frequently makes mistakes during lectures which is confusing. She will often get off topic and we lose a lot of lecture time because of this. She also hands out a lot of difficult homework that is extremely time-consuming. There is a quiz or exam every week.
If you struggle with math like me you are going to find this class difficult. Allen does the best she can but with the sheer amount of content you have to learn in such a short span of time you can get very easily overwhelmed. She has office hours though which I recommend taking advantage of. Overall MTH103 is gonna be hard no matter the professor.
Quiz every week or exam. No extra credit opportunity. Allen makes many mistakes every lecture which makes it hard to follow and learn. Many students have had to shout out and correct her multiple times about mistakes she's made during note taking. Would not recommend her if you are taking this course and aren't good at learning by yourself.
I didn't struggle but I know a lot of people that did, just make sure to stay on top of your work and be well prepared for the weekly quizzes
I personally dont agree on what majority people here says. I find that she is amazing! Go to office hours, she would guide you through the course. Honestly its just a skill issue if you're struggling.
Professor Allen is a caring instructor who genuinely wants students to succeed. While she occasionally makes minor mistakes during lectures, her notes are clear and the quizzes/exams align well with the material. Utilizing resources like unstuck AI and going to office hours can really help overcome the course's challenges.
She is a genuinely good professor who actually cares. You honestly have all the resources to get a 4.0.
Truly just not a great prfessor, not understanding and I would advise everyone to find a different proffesor
really hard:(
Sue Allen is such a kind proffessor and is very helpful if you reach out for help. Test and Quizzes were very hard for me at the beginning but that's because I wasn't asking for help. After going to office hours and attending the MLC my grades started to go up. You have all the resources you need to be successful in this class
Super sweet, often hosts study sessions before exams and occasionally before quizzes. Easy to reach out to. Provides a schedule for the week every Sunday night or Monday morning via email as well as on D2L. Follows her syllabus. Allows two quiz drops and one exam drop. Lectures are effective and easy to understand as well as posting online lectures
Allen is an alright professor, although she often makes mistakes in lectures. I think the issue is less with her, and the MTH103 class as a whole. It goes by way too fast and can be very difficult to learn with the notes provided. Be prepared to use a LOT of outside resources, and consider taking MTH103A instead (because I really wish I did).
Allen is a very sweet lady, and cares about her students. If you want to pass, go to the lectures!! She often holds review sessions before exams. She's definitely too old to be teaching still and is sometimes hard to hear in class and makes mistakes. This IS a harder class, but you have all the recourses to get a 3.5 or 4.0.
She is just too old to be teaching still, constantly making mistakes which makes it hard to follow the lecture. She is always confused and gets upset/hurt pretty easily about not coming to class or leaving early. You have a test or quiz every recitation, but if you do the reviews and go to the mth help room not her office hours it wasn't very hard
Was kind and helpful. Made mistakes during lecture but fixed them quickly. Make sure you attend lecture or else you will probably fail the class. There is a quiz every week. Homework was easy but there was a lot of it.
I was one of the few people I knew who passed this course, and I earned a 3.5. I think Mrs. Allen was one of the best professors you can get for MTH 103. Your grade in this class is based on how much effort you put in. Any good advisor will have you take CEM 141 and this class separately. You get to drop 2 quizzes and 1 exam, which was generous.
Dr. Allen was not a horrible professor, however if you are taking math 103, DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN to take one of the other professors. Dr. Allen messed up in class very frequently and did not explain things in an easy to understand manner. From what I heard, the other professors had much higher grade averages and were more well liked.
Please Please do not make the same mistake that so many people in that class went through, spare yourself and do not take this class with her
Sue Allen is an amazing math professor. I've always struggled with math, but she explains it clearly, making it enjoyable. The class is tough but manageable with effort. By attending office hours, doing practice problems, and learning from mistakes, I improved significantly. She genuinely cares and goes the extra mile to help her students succeed.
Sue Allen is a caring, light-hearted professor. She wants the best for her students and is very personable. She loves to joke around, but often gets off task during the short 50-minute lectures. I struggled with her lack of organization during lectures. She tends to over-explain the easy stuff, not focusing enough on the difficult content.
Shes a very sweet older lady. She often treats her class like grandchildren. She will often open up more office hours, exam study sessions, extra practice before exams, etc. She is there for you if you need help and genuinely wants all her students to do well. She can sometimes make mistakes but she fixes them quickly.
I didn't enjoy professor Allen's teaching style. She treated the class like a highschool class, and showed us the same sort of respect as highschoolers. She tends to start talking way before class started and usually ended class late. She was also sensitive about people leaving early. She was fine, but I didn't love her teaching style or anything.
Poor teaching style. Talks too much before class then rushes at the end, overall not organized in the slightest (which I need in a professor) her explanations are not cohesive/helpful. Treated class like high school, she's very funny but not a good math professor fit, she should be a highschool history teacher! If you're bad at math don't take her.
She's good, she just doesn't explain her answers, rather just gives them to you. She moves on very quickly in lectures
Mrs Allen is so sweet, the content is difficult but she really cares about students success, She hosts extra office hours and review sessions to help with any difficult content. The lectures are fast paced but there is a lot of content to get through, I would highly recommend taking 103 with Mrs Allen.
Susan Allen cannot teach math. I spent most my time in the MLC (Math Learning Center) where they actually helped. She rushes lectures and goes way too fast. There was also times when she made her own mathematical errors, and other students in the lecture hall corrected her. She has a sweet personality, but is not a good professor!
Terrible. If you can get out of having her as a prof, I would. She does not teach the material, and quite literally tells you, "You should have learned this in High School." instead of helping. If you do poorly on weekly quizzes and exams, you will not pass.
Can not teach. She will do the work without any explanation with it. She is easily agitated and will stop lectures to walk up to and yell at students. If you can do not take.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE IF YOU WANT A GOOD GPA AND TO NOT HAVE TO RETAKE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you can put in 20 hours of studying and still will get bad grades, does not know how to teach and I end up watching lecture videos online. take it with a different prof.
Prof Allen is not great at teaching. She will rush through lectures and just do the work without explaining how she got her answers. Talks multiple times about how if you get the answer but not her way you will not receive credit. Be ready to have to teach yourself. Do Not Take
Don't take this if you struggle with math in the first place. She made a mistake at least 2 times every lecture and students would have to correct her. She spends way too much time bashing the students for grades instead of teaching, and her teaching style is horrendous. Her class made me feel like I was in high school again.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! If you are already struggling with math, taking this class will push you back even farther from where you started. Sue Allen is not consistent with teaching in her lectures, and everything earned must be studied outside of class. The workload is excessive, and the professor doesn't know how to properly teach.
I want warn you that this class will be difficult, that is not say you cannot pass it but you are going to have to WORK FOR IT. This is NOT a class where you can no show lectures, not go to extra review sessions, and skip office hours. Without office hours I would have failed this class! She is extremely devoted to helping you learn!! Just try!!
Her lectures are full of flaws and she prefers to rush through content instead of teaching it. The grading for this course is also awful. Work has to be exact in a way that feels like walking a child. If you can take another, please do.
She's a very sweet lady. The lessons are so easy if you print out the notes and go to class. She makes a lot of mistakes during the lecture, so it can get a little confusing at times, but overall, she's decent.
Only graded on homework, quizzes, tests, no extra credit Office hours help alot sicne she is normally slow during lectures Quizzes and tests are decently hard I'd study vocab such as "what makes a polynomial a polynomial, etc" Literaly algebra 2 just in college Webwork (hw) is due every week Go to the MLC or office hours for help
She makes so many flaws in her lectures and teaches at a really fast pace. She also stops the whole lecture if she hears one person talking and wastes time when lectures are only 1 hour. Lots of webwork problems that don't give any good feedback if you're wrong. Some exams also don't resemble the study guide so know every single bit of material.
The structure of this class is awful, but it will be the same regardless of your prof, so no hate to prof Allen. Just SO much hw, quiz/exam EVERY week, 2 50 min 500 person lectures so there is no time to ask questions. If you want to succeed, go to every class, office hours, and watch videos. There is a reason why so many people fail this class.
I don't like the structure of MTH 103, Professor Allen is nice but expects far more than you would think for a class of 400-500 people. A lot of my lectures, the first 20 minutes would be spent yelling at various students and complaints about the students.
