Great teacher, at times hard to understand her, but cares for her students. Great experince.
horrible. students always corrected her. yes she cares. doesnt mean anything if u cant teach me what i need to learn to pass. she could never relate.
Great lady, keeps things interesting as possible in a math class. Prepares you well for exams, as long as you study, ask questions and attend class you'll do great.
she has no clue what shes teaching. student are always correcting her. she will show you one thing then the next day said it was the wrong way. I am pretty good at math but this class was so hard because the teacher couldnt expalin and she did not care to help. if you asked for help she would give major attitude. she did have her pets!
2009 was willing to make time to answer my questions. knows her stuff.
Awesome class if you want to learn. She teaches the subject very well and will help if you need it. And have to put in some effort if you want to pass you will pass.
It would have been harder to fail this class, it was pretty easy. She does a great job teaching the class, and is very helpful. She also let the class retake one exam during the semester. This helped my grade sooo much. One of the better math teachers I have had.
very helpful, i absolutely loved her class! she took the time to get to know her students and always made sure that the topics were understood by everyone.
She is a good teacher...but she could use the book more. She likes to give handouts every class period and she will make the material clear if not understood. She is polite and kind, and is will to forgive you if you miss some class. Her test are easy if you understand the group solves give prior to the test before. She is cute too and Australian.
Not the best teacher. I got a "B" and really feel as though i should have gotten an A. Stops grading homework after a while but still expects you to complete the homework. Group work everyday like your some kid in grade school. Pick a different teacher
TERRIBLE! I have always taken an interest in math and comprehended the material. She gives an example of what she's supposed to be teaching and then gives handouts that require so much more critical thinking than what she offered with her 5 minute lecture. So dissapointing. Dropped her class and lost money so that I would learn at a later date.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! She was very unorganized with her thoughts and when she gave us a problem on the board she would forget the answer and the STUDENTS WOULD TEACH HER. It sucked because she gave us a lot of homework. Don't waste your money or your time. Please get a better instuctor.
TOUGH TEACHER! Take her class only if you want to spend every night figuring out word problems. Very nice personality and super nice but will expect a lot for her classes. Good Luck!!!
She is very unorganized and hard to understand She gives 1or2 examples from the book, hands out group HW and assigns bookwork from a outdated syallabus, she never bothered to pick out need-to-know problems The tests only have 5 ?'s and the method for grading is unclear,2 ppl can miss the same problem and 1 person losses 10+ points more teach urself
She does her best to try to help you understand, but you need to actively participate in if you want to get the most out of her class. You will spend a lot of time working within your "group" with little explanation as to how to do the assigned problems. She will do anything she can to help you understand, but you have to be proactive.
She did a great job at explaining stuff. I really liked that she helped when I asked questions, and I asked a lot. She also is sarcastic and I think she's really funny. But people, if you have her, don't be afraid to get involved and speak up in class. It will pay off!! She is good. :)
She did a good job teaching the material. If you come to class without reading material or don't even attempt to read you could end up lost. Everything builds on itself as semester progresses You have to apply yourself just like any other class. If your not going to try don't then expect good results. She is nice and laid back teacher.I recommend
Professor Steele is very helpful and very demanding, but you won't understand that if you don't want to work. In the middle of the semester I misunderstood her teaching method until a few weeks left. She won't do your work for you and she drops hints of that early. Book needs work, but she's and awesome professor. Prepare to work and learn.
Hard subject, but she kept it fast past enough to not be boring and not too fast to loose us with the content. In the beginning of the semester she explained how the semester would play out, how to earn extra credit points, and then she stuck to it! So far, Sue has been my favorite math instructor at CGCC!
You teach yourself the entire semester. She puts you in groups so you can teach eachother instead of her conducting a lesson and when none of the people in your group understand she still wont help. She doesnt give examples to the class she simply she hands out worksheets and tells you to figure it out or should i say "problem solve". Good luck.
Steele is a great professor. She's very helpful, understanding, caring, and sweet. If she doesn't have an answer for you, she will find it. There is a lot of work, but not more then necessary and not more than you'd expect in this class. I'd definitely recommend taking her for math.
She was a very good professor. Knew what she was talking about and always willing to help. No more hw then you'd expect in a math class, and as long as you do your hw & review you'll do good on the tests.
Prof Steele has a very nice personality, very helpful and understading. Is available in her office hours to help if asked. She clearly outlines the pace of work before the semester beings and sticks to it. She gives out extra credit and points on the test. She wants you to do well in her class and will help to make it so. Highly reccomend!
She is a great teacher who just got hired on full time. Down to earth teacher, and loves to help her students. Group work is her thing, but if you need extra help then just ask. Also, she lets you attend other classes of hers so you can get it better. Some classes used online book only. She loves her job.
I wouldn't reccomend her she is available before and after class to help but goes way too fast, rushes through chapters, and believes in this"you learn better if you teach yourself and others" type of teaching. Short lectures. At one point she went away to a convention and told us we had to teach ourselves two chapters because she didnt get a sub.
For me math is hard. I like Ms. steele because she is extremely nice and helpful. i dont think i will get an A in the class but i know i learned a lot in her class. i feel comfortable beeng in the class and enjoy her fun humor.
Mrs. Steel was very intelligent and encouraging. However, she expected a lot from us, and I found it helpful to have a teacher like that.
Mrs. Steele doesn't spoonfeed the aswers to you, she wants you to figure out and understand what you are doing (which helps you understand and remember the functions). Mrs. Steele is always available and patient with tutoring...even if it means explaining the problem 10 times till you get it. If you are willing to work hard you can get an A.
I wish she taught calculus! Learning math in her classes makes me feel comfortable. She is straight forward and challenging but she is always on your side and wants everyone to pass.
Excellent teacher. Will take more courses from her. She is very fair and has great office hours. She never turns students away.
Took course in Fall 2012, unfortunately i withdrew the course because i had complications with my pregnancy she was so understanding & nice she tries her best so that everyone in her class get it. Recommend paying attention to the group work almost exactly like the actual test. Hate Word problems but all she uses, thinks it more realistic in life.
This class was very easy and she was easy to work with. She teaches differently than most teachers. When you don't understand something, instead of just giving you the answers she gets you to think about the problem and think back to what we talked about. This way the things she told me actually stuck to my memory. over all pretty good teacher!
She was a great teacher! I'm glad I had her course, she challenges all the students to think differently than we were taught in high school. ALWAYS do your homework!! As long as you do your homework, journal entries, show up and listen you will do fine!
Excellent Instructor. Always available, answers emails and texts. Goes above and beyond to see her students succeed. I don't understand all the crappy comments. If you show up prepared for class, you will pass the class.
Reason why I took this class is cause I wanted to be taught IN CLASS.Instead, she had us teach ourselves through MATHAS (online center) which was affiliated w/ SCC. In class, she tried to rush explanations. She "hated" x's,y's,quad formula,FOILing, etc. which made it harder to grasp concepts when she strictly had certain ways of doing things.
If you WANT to learn Algebra & then you should definitely take her class but if you are just looking for an easy A then you might want to pick a different instructor. She wants her students to learn the material so if you come to class & behave like an adult then she will treat you as such. A year later, she is still my favorite instructor.
I did not like her teaching methods. She could condescending at times. I also did not like that she required us to write an essay in the beginning of class. She dropped me for missing two classes.
Was very clear from the beginning of class what was required. Was very clear in explaining material. If you have trouble with math this class is for you! Would recommend to anyone!
I love her method. She makes you think through the problems and she uses real world problems to help you make the connection. I love the use of logic.
If you put in the effort you will get the grade. I love the way she teaches. She applies the math to real world problems. She is awesome!
Math was never my subject. But Professor Steele helped me love Algebra! She is enthusiastic and the class was well rounded. She used real world problems to help you "get it" which made all the difference. Class was fun, and I learned a lot. She is the best teacher I could have hoped for. I will take her again.
Don't take this class. She is a careless person who doesn't care for her students. I honestly think the good reviews on here are fake. I know so many students that disliked her teaching style. She walks out of class half the time. Grades poorly, simply doesn't care to see her students succeed. Take a different math instructor or you will regret it.
I don't recommend taking this teacher. I got a 'B' but only because I studied more than I ever did in any class. She went to class unprepared and made us all confused. I had to teach myself the entire time. Visit the tutoring twice a day. I didn't learn anything from her. Save your time and money and pick another teacher at a different college.
I love the way she teaches. She makes you think, which I believe we need more of in this world. If you do the work and use resources you get the grade. If you don't know how to accept responsibility for yourself and your own grade don't take the class, if you do know how to take responsibility you will be fine and love it.
If you do badly in this class it is because you didn't apply yourself or do the work. I really like that she applies each problem to real world problems and she has you THINK through the problems which helped me to make more sense of what we were doing.
This was a FAST track combo class for MAT122 & MAT 152, I am not a math student but worked very hard and earned a B. I studied and reviewed everyday, and felt the instructor was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. She works with you. She makes you think. For the first time I really got math. Thank you
Applies math to real world contexts. Always available outside of class for extra help. Offers extra credit for doing curricular activities which help in the long run, not many professors will do that! For a good grade you must apply yourself in class and out as you would in the work force. DEFINITELY cares for her students, unless you don't care!!
I got an A, but I would not recommend taking her class! You will end up teaching yourself everything!
Ms. Steele is an amazing teacher. I hated math before I took her class because I just didn't understand. She broke me out of that mindset and now I feel very confident in my ability to do math. She is great!
Don't take her! Confusing, rude and leaves the classroom half the time. Save your money and take another instructor. The entire was feed up with her teaching style and attitude towards us. She doesn't care to make you feel stupid in front if everyone. She doesn't teach, you will end up living in the tutoring center because of her lack of teaching.
It was nice having a math teacher who actually cared. Most of them just feel like you're taking their math class because you have to and could care less. Sue was easy to talk to and never asked us to do more than we can handle. Just listen and be respectful and you'll get a good grade. Would take her again
I don't recommend taking this course with her. I did receive at good grade but that's because I'm amazing at math. Worse math teacher at CGCC.
currently taking this class in the summer. not good at explaining herself. moves too fast. gets impatient easily. scatter brain. rude. would not take her again.
PLEASE LISTEN: I know some people think reviews aren't always accurate but I am telling you she is the epitome of cruel. She does NOT care about her students, she does NOT know how to teach. She is egotistical and seems to enjoy hearing herself speak more than actually ensuring his students understand the subject. Avoid taking any of her classes..
She was a great teacher. I'm confused why anyone wouldn't like her. You have to work at the homework and ask questions but that's all.
Ms. Steele was the hardest professor I have ever had simply because she would not explain anything to you. She is often condescending and rude when you ask for help. She gives too many assignments that are not helpful for the test. Save your money and find another professor.
Personally, going into the class I was not excited to take it because of the way she organized everything. It was all group based and self taught essentially. That being said, if you ever had a question she would try to help you find the answer, not just tell you it. I liked this class because she made you understand the applications of the math.
Always available to help. Makes math applicable to real life. Makes class fun and interesting.
Best Math teacher I've ever had. Honestly if you want to finally learn math you NEED to have this teacher. TAKE HER CLASS!!
she is a great teacher and helped me understand math. i used to not get math at all before this but she really helped me a lot. her main goal is to make her students succeed she is a great teacher.
I hated Professor Steele at the beginning of the semester because she made me think about how I was getting my answers. She wants you to think about what you are doing rather than just memorizing formulas. I disagreed with her and told her that it does not matter as long as I get the answer right. She proved me wrong. She is a great teacher.
Awesome professor, really helps you understand math instead of just teaching how to do it. Classes are fun and involved.
Wonderful teacher best math teacher i have ever had.
Amazing teacher! I learned more in this class than I've ever learned in a math class. She seems hard at first because she makes you critically think to get to your answer. It can be challenging at times but she's willing to help and very flexible. And tests are take home! Energetic and fun class!
Assigns homework on a daily basis so you must have the text book. Good thing is there are group and take home tests. Participation is a must to get in class points.
One of the best math teachers I've ever had!! Never been good at math but she was extremely helpful and understanding. Makes you really think and understand a problem. She does give out homework and makes you participate! But I definitely recommend her as a math teacher!!
She's avid with the Common Core teaching which was a new experience for me. Regardless of the good and bad critique on Common Core, she makes the hour and forty minute class enjoyable by bringing the class deep into the question and beyond just the answer; how we got to the answer and why/what we use it for is the essential part of her concern.
I actually hate math, but Professor Steele isn't just some regular Math teacher, she actually cared. Unlike a lot of instructors she didn't just throw the info all over the place and reward only the people that got it. She asked exactly what it was that was confusing me and even started over to make me understand. Thanks to her, it all made sense.
Sue Steele is a great teacher. I took her for Calculus and she does a great job teaching to understand a concept, not just memorizing formulas and procedures. She cares about the success of her students but she will make you earn your grade which is how an instructor ought to be.
Horrable!!!
She is a very personable teacher, if you actually try your hardest she will help you to learn no matter what. She almost always helps is asked outside of class, if it is by email, phone, or just meeting her early before class. The only reason I can think of that she wouldn't help someone is if they were trying to bull crud through the class.
great teacher! if you're willing to put in the work expect a good grade. this class is not an easy A but not impossible. she gives good feedback and makes people participate in class.
shes too involved in students life outside the classroom, shes not my mom. she likes to call out people who struggle and make them feel bad about it. she doesn't teach, she expects you to know how do it. DON'T TAKE HER CLASS
Shes very helpful if you approach her and seek her help. If you don't say anything about your problems she will leave you behind in the dust. So speak up! often! it may be a tough class if you don't like math and your a really big introvert. You could still make it even if you dont say anything if you study the book, which she follows pretty close
This class is essentially a self taught class. She doesnt teach and expects you to know the curriculum. She uses other classmates to teach and explain work.
Office hours conflict with student schedules: ex. Her office hours are only after that class, so if you have a class right after hers, good luck getting help. As others said, self taught class, most of class time is not used wisely and she leaves the last 15-30 minutes to actually teach then will explain it to the students who can stay after.
To put it lightly, this woman cannot teach to save her life. Every one of my classmates agrees with me, and a good number of them had to drop out like I did. She even makes it seem like it's your fault when you make a mistake.
Please be wary when you pick this teacher. Assessment tests are at random and she will warn you within 15 hours before it is taken, this is a self-taught class as well. Lastly, I feel that she does not use her time wisely.
DO not pick this teacher unless you plan to teach yourself. She doesn't use her time wisely. We got the review for our midterm less than 48 hours before. She explained to the class after several complaints of her teaching style that we should take it as a "life lesson",one test ran 30min after class bc she gave it to us with 15 min left of class.
As long as you show up, you will pass! She makes it really easy to understand.
This is my first time writing a review on this site. With that being said, I would advise you to reconsider taking a class with her. She is an okay teacher but there are many things wrong with the class structure itself. Her grading is awful. Would not take her again. She has a bad attitude and screams at the class at times.
Please reconsider this teacher if you are not ready to teach yourself. Be wary of tests (which is worth a bulk of your grade) that are not on the course calendar and the professor may warn you about 1-2 days before the test is given as an "assessment" so she knows where you are at. Extremely stressful semester regardless of participating/studying
Many classmates would say this professor was terrible. I loved this class. She makes it so easy to understand. If you participate and ask questions you will do great in the class. She gives out a schedule of the semester so you know what homework you have and when, what tests you have and when, and she makes it so easy to understand!
Professor Steele only understands one way of thinking, and she refuses to accept you may not process differently. She makes you feel bad for not understanding, but never goes through any problems herself in class. You're more or less expected to re discover math. PLEASE RECONSIDER taking her class.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. If you don't learn or think the same way she does, you will not succeed. She yells at people who ask questions, she yells at the class for being "dispassionate about our education", and she refuses to work through any problem first. She makes you rediscover math, and gets mad when it takes longer than 45 seconds. She's MEAN.
It is my personal belief that Prof Steele should not be a teacher. I feel terrible about myself after leaving every single class period. She's doesn't have the skill set to be a teacher, and frankly I don't know how the school hasn't done anything about it. She literally does not teach she just gives you "hints" to try and figure it out.
Sue Steele should not be a math teacher. Her "teaching style" is to yell at you until you figure out a problem and then she makes you teach yourself the concept. She refuses to use a single example and is not a fair or kind teacher. Frankly, the positive reviews on this page are probably from the four kids she picks as favorites in every class.
This class will make you feel DUMB. She will criticize you if you don't complete the questions her way and if you take too long on a question or don't understand it, she'll just make you feel stupid and do the question for you with minimum explanation. Very hypocritical. Unless you already have a good understanding of Calculus DONT TAKE HER CLASS.
math teacher???? more like a horrible teacher. she literally just tells you you're wrong until someone in the class figures it out. I feel as if her teaching license should be revoked. If I had to choose between going to this class twice a week or going outside and jumping on top of a cactus, I would for sure take the cactus any day.
Literally makes you feel like you don't deserve to be living.
Calc 2 with Steele was not fun. I excelled in Calc 1, but struggled in this class. Her lessons are unclear and confusing. She offers no extra credit and no extension on any deadlines for any circumstances (we are in a pandemic, you would think she would be a bit lenient...) She rarely gives feedback (even though she promises she always will)
Gave a power point with videos of other people actually teaching and said good luck. A elementary student with google could probably teach better, because she didn't teach at all. HW was textbook problems of which numbers were selected completely at random by appearance because they had no course relevance to the videos SHE provided.
She should not be "teaching" online. It is a self taught course (watch 2 videos at most). Didn't help very much, had to utilize the tutoring services provided by the school. I wish my tutor was the actual teacher. Only positive is that I think she curved the grades at the end of the semester. Also very particular about how you answer DQs.
This is the worst teacher i have ever had. The class structure is awful and she doesn't give you enough time to get exams done. She accepts NO late work (even by 1 min) and requires you to open every page of her modules (even the ones you dont need), if you dont open each page the exam will be locked. completely awful class.
Does very little to help students retain information. Splits class into groups when we all work by ourselves anyways. Yells all the time when no one is sure about the answer to questions. Im always in a bad mood after class.
I just got out of my class almost to a point of tears. I'm beyond frustrated in my mat121 class. This class is an absolute joke. Sue Steele expects everyone to understand what's an already difficult subject for me with little help. If you don't, see belittles you and treats you like a dumb child. Every day after class I get out angry and frustrated
Assumes that we should just know the material being given. Yells at you if you don't know something but complains that people don't talk or participate more in class. Honestly I've learned more from a hour long tutoring session than I've learned all semester in her class. She's terrible!
basically taught myself the entire semester and Prof. Steele was unhelpful at best. At worst she was rude and crass. I cannot emphasize enough that she does not teach, will give you a problem, expect you to figure it out on your own, and then gets upset when you get the answer wrong. There were many times we went over time due to her yelling at us.
I'm going to start this off by saying that is was the worst class I ever had. I don't think I ever saw her do a problem for us. Youtube will be your teacher this semester she just kind of haves you do busy work that is not worth any points. She only answers questions with more questions and will laugh at you for giving a silly answer.
Struggled a lot because she relied on group work to teach us. She never really taught much, just expected us to know the answer, and made it confusing when youd ask a question. I have a disability, I cant always make it to class when Im feeling sick, even if its through zoom. Unfazed, she basically told me to go to class anyway. Disappointed.
Whatever you do don't take this class. Any single question that you will have won't be answered directly. She will belittle and make you feel stupid for your question that you ask. The lecture will have us split into groups that will have us stare at each other for awhile. There is little to no homework and extra credit that she gives.
worst professor Ive run in too. Should not be teaching anywhere...She hates the students and just tries to give us a hard time whenever she can and scream at us. Stay away from Steele.
Gives you a powerpoint and tells you to fill in the blanks. Not even a lecture. The fact that this teacher has taught for 17 years is a miracle. She does not teach. At all.
She seemed like a nice person when I took mid-term and final in person, but was an awful professor. It didn't seem like she cared about her online students as our lectures were youtube videos from another professor. I never knew what I got wrong on quizzes and exams, so didn't know where to improve. Don'[t recommend taking an online course from her
If you are anything like me who has no love for math, but willing to put in the work, this is the professor for you. She is very helpful, patient and a gifted lecturer. Just put in the work and you will do fine.
Professor Steele was a good teacher. She has students learn at the boards in groups to bounce feedback off of each other and if you don't get it, she will push you in the right direction, while also not spoon-feeding you the answer.
Not helpful at all!! I leave class frustrated and confused. She belittles you often and makes you feel stupid if you get a problem wrong. Make sure you submit your assignments the correct way otherwise they will be zeros even if the work is right. Would not recommend!!
If you are a first-time MAT student, I would not take her class. I fear she has grown a power over students, and she thinks it's okay to belittle students into answering her questions. I had a classmate who dropped out because this class was causing them to lose points in other classes. She mixes up assignments/quizzes due dates often too.
Horrible teacher that is overly confident in her teaching abilities. Screams at you about how it's not high school anymore and the class won't be easy, but students talk about how much better the YouTube lectures she links to are. One of those teachers that can't possibly fathom why somebody wouldn't need this level of Math for their career. Avoid!
Y'all nothing could prepare you for this class. First C of my life. I arrived eager and ready to learn, only to be crushed and burnt out teaching myself calculus week after week. If you are shy or not assertive, do not take her class. You can pass if you have no job (she has a no late-work policy), no life, and if you are able to teach yourself.
Please listen to the reviews. Steele doesn't teach at all. The only teaching is by the youtube vids linked. She said it's not her job to teach. There's barely any assignments, which can be good, but it doesn't prepare you at all for anything. The total grade % in canvas is also restricted, which is weird. You have no idea how well you're doing.
Honestly, it was the hardest class I ever had with some of the strictest guidelines ever.I had to teach myself Calculus 1, and when I got to the difficult Calculus 2, it was not difficult; I just had an excellent teacher who could teach me.I would say she struggles with time management and building fundamentals ideas that are important for math.
