This woman is a horrible teacher. I came into this entry level course with an extensive knowledge of computer science and technology. I actually felt dumber after taking her class. She is very confusing about the material, and if you do more than what is asked, she will actually DEDUCT points!

THIS IS THE WORST TEACHER I HAVE LITERALLY EVER HAD AT SANTA CLARA! Stay as far away from this teacher as you can. She will say something directly from the book during class and then if you put that answer down on the test she will mark it wrong and tell you she told you that was the right answer in the first place.
AVOID THIS TEACHER!!! she doesnt explain anything.. makes going to class a drag... avoid for sure
DO NOT TAKE HER. She's unclear in explaining course's actual (a heck lot) workload and project expectations. She absolutely does not take students' feedback into consideration about the pile of work/projects suddenly tossed in our faces on the 8th week. Thanksgiving week break does NOT exist to her.
It's the last day of Thanksgiving break, and we have a test tomorrow. We also have a group project and a Dreamweaver project due next week. And even though she said that there would be no midterms or finals, surprise, there's one friday. It's like she was trying to ruin Thanksgiving. She's like the Grinch.
She was a horrible teacher, but that's not the worst part. i mean, you could've learned everything from the book if you wanted, so that was fine. What was the biggest downer was that she was really inconveniencing. she came an hour late for the final! she made a schedule for presentations but didnt follow it. oh and, we did several access labs in c
Not helpful. completely disorganized. if you asked for help, she made you feel like you were a nuisance. you couldn't get an A unless you sucked up. she didn't have us do any work and then informed us in the last 3 weeks of class that we had 2 projects due & 2 tests that would basically determine our entire course grade.
Our orig inst left. Sur got the last 7 wks. Many students claimed that we didn't learn anyting w/ the 1st prof but we had a guest program specialist... twice! She gave us 2-3 weeks notice on e-mail for all projects but most played dumb and voted to take a test right after break and cram three projects in the last two weeks. Then they cried overload
The class was a total rubbish. It's even better to learn by urself. First, she always claimed how she graduated from stanford. Then she has a strong accent which was hard to understand. She couldn't structure her mind so she can't teach. She was completely useless when u asked for help, she answered to ur question wrong and insisted that she's rite
Totally easy- def knew just as much coming into this class as going out. Take it if you want a pretty easy A, but don't want to learn anything.
I though she was really nice and an easy teacher. i was surprised so many people didn't like her
Great teacher! I enjoyed her class!
I have taken two classes from her. I too learnt a lot & enjoyed them thoroughly.
Great professor. She's very sweet and helpful. She has a bit of an accent, but it's not hard to understand. She cares about her students getting good grades. Just do all the assignments and you'll be fine.
Awesome awesome awesome. take her for this class. awesome
You can take her if you want an easy A, but you probably won't feel like you've learned anything at all. She's nice and appears to care about her students, but is really disorganized at the same time.
I love her! She really cares about her students and will help each individually. Sur is really sweet and funny.
Well, it's not like you really have much of a choice but Professor Sur is a nice lady, but really disorganized. For someone who is an expert in technology, she has a lot of computer issues and just does stuff right out of the book. Her insturctions are often unclear. Also, check your test grades, don't count on her to get it right.
For an OMIS teacher, she's really inadequate with the computer... But a fairly easy teacher. As long as you keep up with the work, going to class isn't mandatory. She plays favorites.
worst teacher ever. I don't understand what she was saying. I did all my projects and assessments well and I ended up getting a B+ for this class. Extremely unhelpful when I have questions. please do me a favor do not take her class!!!
Idk how people actually got less than an A in her class, all you have to do is do the in class work and like 2 out of class asignments. She's willing to basically go to your room and spend the night with you and help you with your work to help you get your A
She is too biased. She is clueless about what he talks. She has a thick accent and her english is not fluent either. She has done Operations Research in Stanford and nothing else. It is not engg for sure. She is non technical and lacks computer skills. Don't choose her. Pick other teachers if you have a choice.
Sur is not hard pretty straight forward.I had a bit of trouble so I would go to her office hours and she was super helpful. She cleared time to meet with me and wanted me to do well.Sometimes hard to understand. She has kids, doesnt give homework. You mostly do excel. She could have been more helpful in class. She would do it for you vs showing you how.
Sur is the BEST OMIS teacher there is! She is super friendly and always happy and excited to teach at 8am! She is super friendly and the hw load is very light. Go to class and you will do well :]
Professor Sur is a really fun teacher. She is not hard to understand at all, I dont know why people keep saying that. She is fine with the computer, she just does not like how technology is taking over our lives. OMIS was completely enjoyable with her and as long as you do most of the work you will get an A.
super nice lady. terrible teacher. none of the random short answers she makes you do on angel are worth anything. she takes attendance but theres no attendance grade. you learn nothing and the midterms were both super easy but the final was hard.take the class if you want an ok grade with no work except studying for the 3 tests
You do not need your own book. Just mooch off someone else, share or work something out. Book is EXPENSIVE! Got through the whole quarter with out it. Sur is a great teacher, passionate about her topic and knowledgable, although much of this class is easy, I still managed to learn some new things. If you attend class you will be fine.
One of the nicest teachers I have ever had. Really works with your schedule and if you get sick, always glad to help outside of office hours. Wants you to do good. Defiantly take her.
Homework due dates are easily changed if you just talk to her. She does have a bit of an accent which is sometimes difficult to understand. You don't really need the online subscription so don't waste your money on it.
If you asked for help, she made you feel like you were a nuisance. you couldn't get an A unless she likes you.
She's a very nice person; her teaching skills involve people understanding "why" rather than simply "doing". Sometimes she can be a bit difficult to understand but overall she's a good teacher.
Great Teacher!
There is NO HOMEWORK other than studying for the three quizzes and final and doing the (small) group project. Straightforward and easy class! Sur is always happy to have you come in to office hours but I never needed it.
Did not like her, at all. She speeds through EVERYTHING & does not give students a chance to ask questions. And besides speeding through everything, her accent makes the class THAT much more difficult to understand. Took her because she was "easy"... she was NOT.
Anyone who does not give this wonderful lady a 5/5 on overall awesomeness is crazy! She is my fav teacher at SCU and is funny too. Her classes are not a total cakewalk but she is very reasonable. She keeps her classes pretty focused and fun. I love her!! Take her if you can and don't get frustrated if you cannot understand something. Just ask...
Class is based on doing exercises on excel and access. There are 3 quizzes (2 excel, one access) and one final that covers everything. She is very helpful if you go to office hours. There is also three projects: one for access, excel, and a group presentation based on a business plan. Great professor! Take this class!
She's the nicest lady ever. Will do anything for her students. Hardly any homework and tests are relatively easy. Definitely reccomend her.
teacher is very sweet lady. unfair in grading. not the most helpful. goes very fast. must pay attention in class. not a hard class. no hw
Not necessarily the best teacher but she really cares for her students and will help you if you reach out to her.
Professor Sur does a great job convincing students she cares. she always tells you not to worry about ur grade. no hw. easy quizzes. but then ur final grade comes out and its a complete shock. i wouldnt be surprised if she picks grades out of a hat for each student. just prepare yourself
Great Class! Great Professor! I learned a lot in the class!
This was the best class I took. I just loved the class. I am still using the material learnt in class.
Horrible. Worst teacher I've had at Santa Clara. All she does is talk about Stanford and how she teaches there and is unclear as to her directions. She is relaxed sure, but in a way that makes you stressed which defeats the whole purpose. Anyone that likes here brown-noses to her to get an A. Take Echoa-Escobar, at least you'll learn something.
I was very worried about the class since I am not good at computers. After getting extra help from her in her office hours I feel pretty confident now. I have learnt a lot in the class.
If you don't take Sumana for OMIS 17 you're doing it wrong. She's the bomb. So informative and helpful. I was really worried because I took the class over summer, but she made the whole thing manageable. If you struggle, you probably sat in class on facebook. the homework can be a drag, but I'm pretty sure she grades on completion.
Great Teacher! One of my best classes in SCU!
Hard to understand and she is rather difficult to follow in class unless you sit close to the front. Four quizzes final and a presentation (which was completely unrelated to the class). Quizzes were pretty difficult and she is not the easiest grader.
The people that gave Sumana a bad review just can't follow her in class. My class had a lot of slow people who struggled and it's not the teacher's fault so quit complaining about your own stupidity. Yes she goes very fast but its perfect if you like to learn and have a vested interest in excelling in class.
Great class. Literally one of the most useful classes you will take at SCU. Knowing excel and having a basic understand of a relational database will be invaluable in your job hunt. Sumana is also one of the nicest people alive. She genuinely cares about her students and will go out of her way to help you. If you aren't doing well it's 100% on you.
Prof. Sur is wonderful. She has worked in industry and wishes for all her students to succeed. OMIS17 is pretty standard - learning excel and access OMIS34 the course is split between lectures and applications (namely, SQL, HTML, CSS, Javascript)
Class is not hard day to day, only little exercises every time. No real homework, and she is awesome. She is super nice and sweet. If you try to learn the info in class, you can get at least at B+ with minimal studying before the midterm and final.
She's genuinely nice. She wants all her students to do well. If you are having problems she will help you and give you a boost in the grades if she knows you try hard. She's like a mom, she gives you life lessons in class sometimes, but ultimately if you don't pass, its your fault.
The sweetest professor I've ever had. Acts like a mom and clearly states that she won't fail anyone as long as there is effort. Sometimes the material gets confusing and she can move fast but she is more than happy to go over it again for you. Definitely take her.
Very confusing and hard to understand, very hard grader. Felt like I learned a lot in the class but still did not perform well on quizzes or tests, even though I felt like I knew what I was doing
Best class I have taken at SCU
The class should NOT be hard, it's just Excel, but she goes way too fast and if you ever ask questions, she just makes you feel dumb for asking! There is only three quizzes and a final but if you don't do well on them you're out of luck. Unless you've worked with Excel before, or you're ok with getting a B, don't take this Professor.
Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Hard and somewhat confusing professor, but if you go into office hours, she is eager to help you out. Come to class, pay attention and study for tests.
My best class at SCU
I took both her classes! Just loved her!
Talk in class and make sure she knows your name. She is supper sweet and if she likes you then she will make sure you do well in her class. Absolutely loved her!
I enjoyed both her classes!
I am so glad that I took the class though it was not a required on for me.
It gave me a very wide knowledge on Information Systems which was very helpful in interviews.
She cares a lot about her students and she really appreciates it when they show effort. Go to her office hours and she'll really help you out! She does her best to give everyone in her class a grade above B+.
Sumana is a great professor. She made me laugh every day in class and I could tell she really cares about her students. There are a few tests and one midterm, all of which are mostly taken on excel. Simply do the practice activities, and you'll be fine! I would recommend this class to everyone -- excel is a necessary skill to have!
She was so condescending. If you are a natural at spreadsheets, it's an easy class. But if you don't understand her, she will disrespect you in front of your peers. She has a heavy accent and doesn't go over things step-by-step. Her class and her office hours are absolutely disorganized. Don't take her if you don't aren't a natural at spreadsheets.
I am so glad that I took her class. She is the best professor I had at SCU.
Confusing in term of lecture and directions. Plus the students get to take the blame when she messes up or for asking questions. You'll also get to enjoy going through hundred of textbook pages because you can barely understand her lectures. Best OMIS class at Stanford.... oh wait.
If you are not a native English speaker, don't take this class, you'll have no idea what she is talking about. She doesn't explain the material at all, she teaches the class by saying:" just do this, just click this, etc". if you ask a question, 80% of the time, you will not get an answer. Let me think if there anything else, umm, disrespectful.
I look forward to the class everyday
I would take any class offered by her
When I signed up for OMIS15, I assumed it would be an easy A and a class I wouldn't really have to worry about. Though it wasn't terribly difficult, Professor Sur covers a lot of material in a short amount of time and it is definitely a good idea to review for her quizzes and final. She is very approachable and genuinely cares about her students.
I have taken both Omis15 & Omis34 from her. Most of the students in Omis34 are those who took Omis15 from her too. This fact speaks for itself. I would take any class offered by her. She is a favorite of most of her students.
Sumana is a very nice and funny teacher. If you pay attention in class and actually do the homework assignments (which tend to take a while to figure out) it is an easy A. Just make sure you spend time practicing before going into tests and quizzes because spreadsheets are the type of things that you need a lot of repetition to understand.
Easily one of the worst classes I've ever taken. She is terrible at explaining things and purposely puts things on quizzes that were not covered in class or barely explained in the textbook. Quizzes are also incredibly disorganized. There are no midterms, only quizzes, which basically means the quizzes are the midterms. Do not take this class !
Had both of her classes in the summer. There weren't that much of work but the exams were content heavy given a short amount of time. Though, the class was not hard
I took her summer course and it was a complete disaster, I wish I could of screenshot Camino and have you guys a good laugh, she has quizzes in discussions, class videos in assignments. Either she is completely unorganized or she has no idea how to use camino. The grades distribution is wrong, Quizzes have things that is not been covered. Very bad
She's a very nice woman and wants to make sure her students know everything to complete assignments and tests well. Her lectures are very fast-paced so it can be very easy to get lost in the middle of them. She's very knowledgeable and willing to help students though and she wants to build relationships with them.
Professor Sur is a super aring professor and is always looking out for her students and genuinely cares about their lives and their health. She always made sure that the students who didn't understand the material the first time understood before moving on. Homework was pretty easy to get done in about 20 minutes once you figure it out.
Simply put; pay attention, do the homework (without help), and study. Who knew intro to spreadsheets could be hard? It was. She moves very fast and isn't very engaging. She cares about students' well-being overall and is very kind, but I'd be prepared to really put the effort in if you want an A in her 2 credit class.
She is one of the worst professors I have ever taken. Extremely racist and is very bad at getting back to her students through email. Has very bad mood swings and I would never take this class with her again. The content of the class is useful but SHE is the problem.
Worst professor, terrible class. She does a terrible job explaining course materials and looks at you as if you're insane that you don't get it. Homework is graded on correctness which was even more INSANE. I later realized the material is not that hard but I just could not stand her. Avoid at all costs.
I'm conflicted with the rating because she is caring and knows her stuff. The problem is that the class has a really poor structure, she doesn't make what she wants clear, and then you have some LENGTHY tests that she grades hard out of no where. I also submitted a great paper and she told me I couldn't get 100 because no paper is 100% worthy??????
Super nice and a light workload. Have to study a bit for the quizzes and final exam but not more than a few hours to refresh. Easy assignments. She always makes sure you've gotten something to eat in the morning.
Professor Sur is a terrible teacher. 2 Quizzes (32%), 1 final exam (39%), hw/project category (useless). She does not respond to emails, is incredibly condescending, and is super disorganized. She moves quickly, refuses to explain things, and is rude. NEVER TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. OMIS15 is a fair class but Professor Sur made it unbearable.
I had experience with every function and topic we learned in this class, but I still found it difficult because of her. OMIS15 is a great course and is important, but she has no idea how to teach or how to word problems on her quizzes and tests, which are such a large percentage of your grade. Make her your last option because it's not worth it.
This is supposed to be an easy 2 credit class & she made it unnecessarily hard because she isn't good at explaining the concepts. In the class, she briefly goes over the concepts & doesn't fully teach everything we need to know for hw or exams. She prepares us well for the 1st quiz, but no the other exams. I learned more in a HS spreadsheets class.
Rarely responds to emails. Only sets aside 10mins per person for OH. When I went to OH to ask for help on some concepts, she said it was easy and that I did well on the 1st quiz and didn't explain the concepts I asked her. These are easy concepts and she doesn't know how to explain them. Don't take her for OMIS15 bc these concepts are v important.
Helpful professor with easy content
Very hard to rate this professor. She is super caring and sweet, but for some reason her class (OMIS 34) is completely unorganized and feels all over the place. The ratio of time spent to grade weighting did not make sense either. Quizes/Final made up almost 80% of the grade but lectures and content were 30% of class time, instead we did projects??
Concepts that are on the quizzes (which make up most of your grade) are quickly gone over in class. If you have technical issues with a quiz or homework, she does not care and it is not her problem. There are weekly assignments and 2 quizzes with a final.
This professor does not help her students. I studied for the first quiz and the content was fine, but we only got 35 minutes to do it. She never answers my questions and she makes others feel dumb for asking questions in class. I wish I could have gotten into the other professor's class because her teaching style makes it difficult to learn.
I mean she's like fine, really kind I just don't understand the class. She definitely cares a lot about the students but is sometimes hard to contact (she's not responded to my emails multiple times). Other than that I don't understand much of the class but I think that's more because the content is hard.
Learnt a lot. I really loved the class.
Professor Sur is a sweet woman and cares about her students well being, but as an instructor, she is difficult to communicate and level with. She isn't very forgiving if you make mistakes such as with submissions. I would suggest dropping the class if you get one bad grade on a quiz. I don't think this should be the case for a 2 credit class.
It was my favorite class :)
Pretty easy course if you have some experience with Excel. You have two assignments a week. The first is following steps from a textbook to learn the concepts and the second one is applying them on your own. She is very understanding and helpful if you ask. Very sweet.
She does not respond to emails and is always saying how she care about her students. Her quizzes are very hard and it is not what she teaches in class. Her class lectures are very easy and once u get to the exams, it is not similar. The only reason I did fairly good in the class was because I had a similar unit in high school.
Good professor, but a little boring but Excel on its own is boring so not her fault. Grade was pretty much all tests and there was a lot of information to remember. I wouldn't say the topics were hard to learn but there were a lot of them and the class goes very fast pace. She was accessible for help but not the warmest teacher.
She is super nice. She sets aside a good amount of time for office hours. The lectures are fast-pace. You have to pay attention to not miss what she says. The homework can be tricky because it's sometimes hard to apply the concepts. Excel can be super interesting but also super boring. Take advantage of office hours to get extra help from her.
She thought Excel was straightforward so she'd be shocked at misunderstandings. More of a "do this" class than "what & why" class. Tests significantly more difficult than homework and classwork. Lots of office hours at various times. Impatient with students explaining queries. Spends too much time saying she cares instead of teaching. Pay attention
Professor Sur is an excellent teacher. Although the two quizzes and the final were challenging, she gave us practice questions to prep us for it. The class requires the reading of the textbooks, which does help benefitting for the tests. There is however no chance for extra credit.
It was one of my best class in SCU!!
Super impolite, every time someone would ask a question she would respond rudely and make them feel dumb for asking questions. Quizzes were not at all like the lectures. Also extremely difficult to deal with.
She doesn't really care about teaching and gives an unnecessary amount of difficulty for a 2-credit class. Sumana Sur is not the best teacher to take for OMIS 15. She is stingy and always seems kind of angry. I would recommend literally any of the other teachers over her if you would like an easier time.
Sumana Sur only "teaches" by telling her students to read the textbook. She is also almost impossible to understand in class. I don't know how she taught previous classes, but the consensus in my class this Spring was that learning from Sumana sucked. Why should a 2 credit class be more confusing and stressful than my 4 credit ones?
She is just hard to understand and mean.
The teacher intentionally makes tests harder and includes information that is intentionally left off of the study guide.
I think if you took her for any other class besides OMIS 15 it would be pretty bad. The actual content is pretty easy, but she goes through her lessons super fast and makes you feel bad for asking questions. Talks too much about how she cares instead of actually teaching. She has 2 quizzes and a final that are a huge chunk of your grade.
A fast teacher but is open to answer any questions you may have. Holds a lot of office hours if you have any extra questions. Does not give quizzes back so you cannot see what you got wrong or where to improve. Can be strict, but is normally understanding.
if you want you grade to be determined by a few very hard tests this is the class for you
Overall, she's a nice teacher but not very helpful. However, your grade is determined by three tests you take, mainly the final, being worth 40%. She doesn't give much homework, but her lectures aren't very helpful, and overall you need to be ready to teach yourself if you want a good grade. I would not take her class again.
While the class can be challenging, engaging with the textbook and taking advantage of office hours makes it manageable. Helpful study tools like Unstuck AI complement the course materials.
I learnt a lot in the class.
I took two classes from her will take more if possible.
there's weekly homework/discussion posts and a lot of the teaching is done by yourself through the textbook. it's hard asking questions in class since she makes u feel bad for asking and come in front of the class. her method of teaching is just doing the work in front of you but otherwise i don't think her class istoo bad with enough self-studying
This professor is here to help. If you need help don't be afraid to go to office hours. Also the test aren't that difficult.
Handsdown the best Prof and human being ever. Living far from home, she made sure of my overall well being and always being so friendly and loving. She made Omis 15 and 34 so easy to learn (despite excel being complicated). Midterms and Finals were online.
This class was fairly easy but for a 2 credit course is a lot of work. If treated like 4 credits its on the easier side. Tests are a little tricky but she grades sort of strict.
Worst professor. Unclear rubrics, heavy favoritism, and group projects. Tests are e-textbook-based, but coursework is random (e.g., building a website in HTML). No lecture recordings, minimal slides, no curve. Harsh grading, mostly free-response, and unrealistic time limits—almost no one finished the final.
Doesn't know how to teach Excel to people who haven't used it before. I only did well was because I knew how to use it already. Her class is her doing a project in front of you and you copy her doing it (she can come off as condescending when answering questions), and the test is a much harder version of that project with very little time.
Don't take her.
I never learned much during her lectures as she would often get sidetracked. Also her tests have content that she doesn't cover in class, and were from the textbook. Great person but not a great teacher.
She is just a mean person in general. Easyish class but she is probably my least favorite teacher. Such a rude and upsetting person. She cares but like going to class genuinely upsets me sometimes
Prof Sur, is honestly the most kind hearted, caring and friendly professor I've ever had at SCU. She made excel so easy and her tests were online. Super accommodating, understanding and will guide you throughout your time at SCU. I took her during my freshman year and I am still in touch with her.
Professor Sur is a very nice professor. She is very helpful and caring to her students. She reminds me of a grandma with how caring she is. Her class is harder than you would expect for being only about Excel but she prepares you decently well. If you ask questions in class, you won't have a problem with tests and homework.
Best professor!
BEST PROF EVER! Kindest, Sweetest Prof. Content might be hard to understand in class but she is always willing to help after.
She's fine. Very strict grader. Never covers topics more than once. I would recommend taking it twice a week if you have the option, the once-a-week class isn't enough time. Quiz's are on zoom though which is nice.
She's a very nice teacher overall. Really cares for her students. I took her once a week and it wasn't bad All her quizzes are on zoom which is really helpful. Her office hours are really convenient and very helpful.
She is a really caring teacher who intends that everyone should pass and all tests proctored through zoom. HW can take some time and can be messy on camino but in the end she is pretty easy and teaches well.
Dr. Sur might are one of the most caring and thoughtful teachers at SCU. Her being a foreign teacher makes many people get scared but I'll say hers is pretty clear although still present. Her class is pretty easy and tests match HW and class. All very easy top follow. Would def recommend her I'm shocked ppl say she's mean....
She seems nice but holy fudge do you not get enough time on tests, if she just have be half an hour more, on the final out of the 3 hours allotted she only have us 1.5 hours? like all the regular tests while still giving us 2x the questions? her final literally screwed me over for that very reason
Very caring professor. Holds office hours every week and willing to set up meetings outside if you email her. Pacing of the class is a bit quick, but if you ask her to slow down she will. Also unintentionally hilarious in class.
Great teacher honestly just didnt hold onto the material well due to the structure of the class and only meeting once a week.
Dr Sur is a super sweet professor and is very understanding, not a super harsh grader and will re-open homework assignments for you. However, I felt like her quizzes and finals had questions about things I don't remember at all from class. Tests are on zoom and not lockdown, if they were in person I don't think anyone would do well on them.
