LOTS of memorization, LOTS of math. I went in for extra help, and as much as I like Sumita, she wasnt that helpful. She is very picky about how she grades things.
The worst thing was the fact that english is her second language, and I could rarely ever understand her. That's not entirely her fault, by it can be a huge stumbling block. She also spent too much time on each subject, and we had to cram like crazy at the end of the quarter. But she tries hard.
I liked her a lot. She was very helpful. If you like math, you will do good in the class.
Organic Chemistry is not for the faint of heart, but Sumita made it fun and interesting. Definitely a valuable asset in my education!
She has a few students that are doing well in the class and progress with her as she teaches, but if you have no prior experience in chemistry, her class is hard. She doesn't really care if you don't understand, she pays more attention to the "good" students who already understand. When you go for help from her, she isn't very helpful.
Organic Chem is very hard and she teaches it very quickly. She also really likes to test on application of concepts more than anything else. Sumita can be helpful sometimes, but she can also be just as useless when coming for help. Sometimes confusing, but overall a good teacher.
no good
Had for OChem (200 & 201). Tough instructor, quizzes and exams very difficult. Moves at a very fast pace. Labs challenging. As pp said, ochem is not for the faint of heart! Sumita was available to help and tried her hardest to explain. Ochem is very hard no matter where you go, but Sumita is in her element teaching it.
Sumita is a generous grader, and she wants her students to succeed. She is available for office hours and is helpful when students seek help. She can get a little snippy about lateness to class/not attending at all. Her exams and quizzes are challenging in that they are all math and application problems. She is knowledgeable and fair.
Because you have no idea how many points you are actually working for with every assignment you are never quite sure why you are getting the grade you get. The last two weeks were impossible.Labs for subjects we had not covered yet and an entire chapter we had to teach ourselves just before the cumulative final.
I really liked Sumita. She's an amazing teacher and if you're willing to put the effort in you will be successful in her class. The homework and tests are difficult and time consuming but you learn so much. She walks around the room and explains things to you individually during work time if you seem lost. She's great.
Was her student for the Organic Chem series. She puts so much effort into making sure you understand the material. The tests are hard, but they're designed to make you think about what you've learned. She knows the material well and will often find other ways of explaining concepts if you don't understand. Was also very helpful during office hours.
I just adore Sumita. She has a really great sense of humor and really knows Chemistry inside and out. However, the class is extremely, extremely difficult.. quizzes & tests are math and conversion-factor based, rather than a testing of the actual concepts of chemistry; however, this emphasis will probably be our benefit in later Chemistry courses.
Extremely friendly and helpful, genuinely cares about students. Very knowledgeable about the subject matter and communicates clearly. Her tests are fairly hard, requiring you to understand the material on a deeper level to do well, but never are unfair or difficult to decipher.
Sumita is a very good teacher, she genuinely cares about her students and is always willing to help you understand the material. Her class is hard though, you definitely need to show up to class, study, and put effort into the homework to pass.
She super awesome and makes sure you understand the material. She does not pull any punches on her test though
she's the best teacher! she knows that she has accent, so she explains everything over and over again until you get it. tests and quizes are exactly the same from the book problems, just different numbers lol. so if you do your homework, you're ready to get an A on her class.
Good teacher. tests are hard. quizzes are pretty easy
Sumita is a great teacher. She is very helpful and is very knowledgeable. Before she moves on, she makes sure that all questions are answers. I would highly recommend taking her class.
This teacher is the best! She makes chemistry such an easy subject to understand. She's so passionate about what she teaches and wants everyone to do well. All of her quizzes are super easy and so is her final. She mainly focuses on the mathematical side of chem, so the book is a waste since it's mostly the info part. I recommend this teacher!
Sumita is an amiable instructor and helps students as much as she can. She is knowledgeable, and gives easily understandable lectures. Chemistry is made easy by her.
Sumita is a great instuctor! she has a great personality and really helps when you dont understand something! homework is simple, and all tests are off her lectures. I didnt use the book much except for homework problems.
Sumita was very helpful. The class is geared towards students without any prior chemistry experience, so if you took it in class, it will seem very slow. Additionally, the class average was very low, but she offers extra credit on nearly every quiz and exam (approx. 10%). She's willing to help, but only if you're willing to help yourself.
I'm thoroughly impressed with Sumita's teaching. Not only is she friendly, funny, and VERY reasonable, she makes chemistry extremely easy to understand! I recommend her for anyone taking chem, regardless of your level.
Class sessions/lectures were full of information and beyond helpful. She is more than willing to help clarify concepts or run through problems whenever asked. If you do not understand something she will work to make sure you do (JUST ASK). I was nervous taking chemistry with minimal prior knowledge, but Sumita was the best teacher I could have!
Helpful, but wow the homework is nuts there's so much homework....
Sumita is an awesome teacher! She is extremely good at explaining difficult concepts and is willing to help you outside of class.
Sumita is one of my favorite teachers ever! I can't stand chemistry but she made it worth going to class and learning all the material. She's funny and helpful and super sweet. If you need to take chemistry, take it from her.
Very approachable and likable. In labs she seemed a bit annoyed and hard to please, but I think that's due to most students being fresh out of high school and not preparing like they should. She makes sure you know what you're doing before she moves on. Highly recommended.
I can only speak to her Organic Chemistry class. Sumita will make you feel like a moron. She will consistently yell at you "this is first quarter stuff, guys". And if you do not immediately approach the board to write the answer she will erase the problem and say "I'm not teaching this if you waste my time". I thoroughly dread attending her class.
She is kind of strict on grade, but she explains things really well in class.
I absolutely loved Sumita for the O Chem series. She expects a lot from you and does not waste any time in the classroom. Her quizzes and exams were challenging. Lab grading was fair. Homework optional, but you'll need to do it to pass. If you get past her initial 'stern' demeanor you'll find she's full of humor, charisma and care for her students.
I had this teacher for chem 161 and did not hav a very good experience. If u ask for help, she will help. In class u hav to ask right away or she will move on. The pace is really fast, labs u do on ur own pretty much, and the quiztest was impossible. One test, the average for all students was an F. But if u already know everything you will b fine.
The way she gives examples during the classes and for homework was much easier than her quizzes and exams. She would add in questions that we haven't learned yet. She expects a lot from her students. She is a great teacher but the time I had her, she wasn't the best because almost everyone's final exam grade was a D or lower.
She's sassy, funny, and a great teacher. Her quizes are fair. Exam one was easy however exam 2 was impossible. The average for exam 2 was an F. Practice problems from the book didn't help. Examples from class were too easy compare to the test. She combines multiple of concepts into one problem, never practiced one like it in class, so be prepare.
I loved Sumita for every chemistry class I took from her. Her lectures are clear and her exams and quizzes are fair. She is always willing to help you and answer in depth any questions in class. She learns everyone's names and she wants you to succeed. I would take her for every chemistry class if I could.
She gives you the opportunity for extra credit, but you have to earn it. Her exams are very tough and long, but not impossible. She gets to know her students and plays into our jokes. She is the reason I decided to follow a chemistry based career. Absolutely fantastic teacher and you're lucky if you have a chance to have her!
Sumita is clearly passionate about the material she teaches. She tries to share her love of organic chemistry with her students. Awesome teacher, her exams are very hard and often a time crunch, but she gives plenty of extra credit opportunities to make up for it. She goes out of her to make her students laugh and aid in their understanding.
Be ready to meet with her in office hours for clarity
It'll be one lonnggg quarter if you take her.
I took this class as a hybrid, where we only met once a week for a 1 hr lecture and a 2 hr lab. There is a lot of material to go over and it takes forever to really get down. She also puts trick questions on her exams, and the quizzes are very specific on the format, but the homework is easy. Would recommend her for a normal class, not hybrid.
I took this class as a hybrid, which I do not recommend for a chemistry class. This professor has a great personality but her class is the opposite. Whenever a question was asked that reached even slightly beyond the scope of the class it was shut down. Also, the tests are graded unfairly and have trick questions.
Great teacher. Not much to say except she will prepare you for the next class, which is what Chem140 was made for. So if she doesn't want to touch in depth into other things it is due to the fact that you will learn it later aND learning it now is just a waste of time.
Sumita is a wonderful chemistry teacher who truly cares about student success. She tells you exactly what you need to know and as long as you study you will succeed in her class. She is always open and willing to help you and answer any questions you may have. Her lectures are clear and I am very grateful to have her as my professor!
Time management is everything in this class. Must make time for homework and practicing the material in order to do well on exams. Throws in extra credit on quizzes and exams every now and then. Do well on everything overall and all the hard work will pay off!
She is a nice person. Her tests are hard. This class is not that interesting or inspirational, just college version of high school chemistry. I would describe the class as tedious, not hard. Labs are very important, make sure you are prepared and present for all of them. Miss two labs and you will fail the course. Otherwise it's an easy course.
She is very heavy on memorization. You are expected to memorize an extreme amount of information.
She would be an amazing teacher if she didn't expect so much memorization. I have had to memorize more things for this class than my other 3 combined. College should be about critical thinking, high school was all about memorization. She cares about her students and I feel she really does care.
She would give weekly online quizzes which was extremely gruesome for math based questions since the computer grades it. If you got 2.9876 and the computer answer was 2.9875? Wrong, not even partial credit. I would spend hours studying and get D's on the quizzes over minuscule "errors". I didn't sign up for an online class for this very reason.
Awesome teacher, for a tough class! In no way is chemistry easy, and isn't meant to be 'fun' per say, but she makes sure to give all info needed in order to succeed in her class. I took a hybrid class, so LOTS of hw and reading outside of class if you want to understand the material. It can be fast paced, but she prepares you for the harder courses
Sumita is one of the best professors I have ever had. The class is hard, but what can you expect from Organic Chemistry? It was also fun and I made life long friends along the way. The science presentation we did at the end was a fun way to end the year. The ACS exam was actually easier than any test Sumita has ever given. Sumita is wonderful.
I have a hybrid class with her, and we only meet on Thursdays for a little explanation of that weeks chapter, and to do lab. Do not take a hybrid class, it is so much worse. Plus her online lecture videos confused me more than just reading the text book myself and working through it alone, and the way she explains things seems to complicate it.
i took the organic series with Sumita and she is amazing, very passionate and tries to help everyone. The class itself is tough but if you start practicing material taught from day one you should be fine. i would definitely take class with her again.
This class was taken as a hybrid and we only saw her once a week for a lab. She has weekly quizzes which has questions that are intentionally misleading. She also requires a significant amount of memorization. Even her lecture videos are confusing and would leave me knowing even less than if I had just read the textbook by myself.
We had two weeks of no class due to snow and were expected to follow her confusing online lectures to remain caught up. She wouldnt let me drop the class when I decided I wanted to change my major. Shes not strict and not understanding of her students.
This class was incredibly difficult (D class average on the final). My class shrunk from a full lab class to about 18 students over the quarter. The weekly quizzes on canvas are picky and there is no partial credit. There is no extra credit and very little time to ask questions. Only assignments are quizzes, exams, and lab reports.
I took her class and it was so much fun. If you do the problems from the textbook, practice the examples in class, you will do good in the class. Do not expect to have a good grade if you don't study. Exams are not that hard. Online quizzes are good and you can always email her if the answer is correct but it marked it as incorrect.
5 in-class quizzes. She grades worksheets for credit, not if its correct. EC on some quizzes. 20 possible EC points on the final. if you dont do the prelab before class shell send you home. No surprises on the final but is cumulative. Practice as many problems in the textbook as you can. It moves fast but maybe bc i took it during the summer
Sumita is by far the best professor I have ever had. Her lecture is heavy and her tests are hard, but she gives you every tool possible for success in that class. If you show up every day and put in the effort you will pass easily. She makes herself readily available outside of class and she deeply cares about her students success.
Sumita was very nice, but I would not take her chem 140 class again. Her lecture style was very fast paced, so make she you do every single thing she recommends to do. No homework in class, so your tests and weekly quizzes are worth everything.
Her online quiz and exam is extremely bizarre. Non partial credit if you did not match the computer answer 100.000000000% right. Also she never mention what significant number you should use in the question. Like she ask what is the molar mass of c14h2o4 and percentage of each element. If you answered in 3 decimal places than you get 0 credit
There are timed quizzes and some of them do not match what you are learning in the class. I would suggest taking this class with someone you know because it will really help you. In addition, her lectures online were kinda confusing and packed with information. Do not take this class online, it was not a good experience.
6 week summer qtr & it was my only class. I'm a 3.65 GPA student & dropped this class before any record of it. I was studying up to 6 hours per day & got a C on the first exam, then an F on the second. She is extremely test heavy. Going into week 2 & even if I got 100% on everything from here out, I would only be at an 84%. SUPER NICE THOUGH!!
Professor singh is a great teacher and she likes making jokes and getting to know students.
Sumita was such a wonderful teacher. She truly cares about the students, learns their names, is available outside class for help, thoroughly explains the content and how to do the homework, and is all around very friendly and kind. In general, science is my least favorite subject to take, but I would take another course with Sumita.
I love Sumita. She really explained the topics thorough and well and she gave good feedback on lab reports and prelabs. She was very forgiving for technology errors and overall, awesome professor.
Sumita is aight. Her teaching is mediocre tbh. I just wouldn't take this class if you're doing it completely alone with no help. Make a discord or take it with friends. This class is tough but chem is tuff in general so goodluck. Also cheating doesnt work, your forced to take her tests on zoom with your camera on... which is actually dumb.
Sumita is a pretty solid instructor. I like the way she explains her lectures. She provides lots of practice problems. Attending her lectures is useful because you get the chance to ask her questions. You are basically graded on only tests, quizzes, and labs so be sure that you know the content well.
I originally gave her a bad rating at the beginning of the quarter but looking back, she was a solid teacher. My grade got bumped up from an A- to an A somehow but honestly just spend time on the class. I joined all the classes but half the time played games in the background. Just spend time and truly prepare yourself for quizzes, exams and labs.
Professor Singh is a nice lady but she is very structured. She doesn't like it if you ask questions after she finishes a unit, even if you are studying for the final which is 6 units combined, still won't answer your question. She doesn't promote working with other students. If you have friends in class you might pass, I withdrew with 3 weeks left.
This was definitely a difficult class. I spent more time studying organic chemistry than any other class I have ever taken before and was constantly stressed, but Sumita was an amazing teacher. The content was interesting and you could tell that she cared about it and her students. There was often extra credit on quizzes so it wasn't too bad.
Don't ask questions and know the material before you take the class and you might get a C. Find different Prof.
Ms. Singh is a very bad teacher. Ms. Singh doesn't care if you learn or if you have questions from previous units, or if you pass or fail. She will leave you behind, and move on. I have A's and B's in my other classes, and I love science, but Singh single-handedly ruined chemistry for the rest of my college experience. I regret taking her class.
Unlike every other teacher I have, she gives these weird due dates, like 5:00 pm, which is when I get home from work. So I have to work on the weekends to make these deadlines. I saw single moms and dads crying when we took the final exam. It was dreadful how apathetic she is to any student who doesn't understand the criteria. LEAVE BEFORE YOU FAIL
I had Sumita a couple of quarters ago and what I can say about her is that she is a harsh grader. If you type a number incorrectly even if it is close/basically the same as the original answer, you will be marked down. You have to think fast during her timed quizzes or else you will run out of time. I disliked how labs would be due at 5pm
Just save yourself and don't take her class. She is not a good chemistry teacher. First of all, she does not like to answer questions and if she does answer it shes very rude. Second, she does quizez on the weekend which is terrible and for exams you have to have your camera, they're timed and they are def not easy.
Very bad
Sumita is a great chem teacher, she is very caring and willing to help you learn. Tough grading, always remember sig figs and units, haha. The only things graded are quizzes and exams, but we have quizzes every week so it balances out. Participation is super important and she makes that very clear. Sumita makes chem easier to understand!
It was difficult to understand the way she explained material; it was almost unnecessarily complex and had information we did not need. It sometimes seemed like she was upset you didn't understand a concept or that you were even asking a question. Overall, don't take her class if you want to keep yourself sane.
She is isn't a very helpful teacher in lectures and can be very irritable. During lecture zooms, Your question rarely get answered and if you didn't hear something and you ask her to repeat herself, she gets very annoyed and mean. During lab, she is more helpful. There is a lot of homework and she goes through the lectures very quickly.
Most of the university was in person while her classes were only online. All labs were virtual. There were weekly quizzes on Saturdays, you were unable to do them ahead of time without arranging an exception with her. The tests were entirely online with almost no partial credit. Typos or small mistakes in tests would make that question a zero.
She gives no time on any of the quizzes. Things that would take a normal student at least an hour and a half on, we are given 45 minutes to do. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES!!
The content is not super difficult Sumita makes it harder than it should be. There are weekly tests every Saturday with very little leniency. For thanksgiving week we covered 2 units in 3 days and had an exam. No partial credit on exams (rounding will cost you full points). Professor is rude and unforgiving does not take accountability.
Sumita is an excellent lecturer and she really wants people to learn. If you attend the lectures, which were virtual, you will learn the subject and be well prepared for Chem 161. The quizzes and exams were a bit hard because of them being submitted on Canvas, which meant that for most questions, there is no partial credit.
She's kind, but she should be teaching in-person only versus online. The limitations that Canvas has for inputting answers mean that you're likely to get marked wrong on the most minor things. She will not go in and give you any credit even when you got the answer right and it's clear you know how to do the material. That's how I got a B vs an A.
strict
Sumita is rude if you ever make any kind of mistake. She grades harshly on any little thing with minimal opportunity for partial credit. No HW other than for your own studying, so you need to be self-motivated. The lectures were boring and felt like annoying high school classes again. Where the teacher is basically begging people to participate.
She will help you find help! But that as far as help goes for Dr. Singh. She has a typical routine she sets for herself and she expects everyone to comply as well. It's not bad if you know her routine, but I hate teachers like these because, they're strict and lack sympathy. Not suggested.
For being so quiz heavy, Prof. Singh gives you next to no quiz time. As she also has no lecture notes, you will suffer if you are sick and miss class. Criteria for grading lab report discussions can be very vague. Homework handed out does little to help in questions for quizzes and exams, for that you have to seek your own resources.
When i originally took her class I found it hard but she always taught very clearly. if you slack off you will get left behind. As ive progressed in my studies i find myself missing her classes. hard prof but she actually taught the material! I would recommend her if you are actually trying to learn not just to pass the class.
Will fall behind if not in class. Kind of harsh grader, but dropped the lowest grade in quiz, lab, and test. Made chem easy, and was helpful when needed. She hates when class is silent but is a nice person. Lectures can get boring but it helps for those who don't get it. Pay attention -> good grade.
Sumita is a very strict teacher, and doesn't make it easy on her students. She has strict deadlines and is not very accommodating unless you have a good excuse. Her lectures are boring and can be hard to understand because of her thick accent. However, she has a good sense of humor and gives extra credit on tests, which makes the class tolerable.
She was a good teacher but very hard on students and harsh in gradings, lots of work but no attendance. Over all I started hating chem and I thought about changing my major after her class.
She records the lectures and uploads them which is really nice and there's not that much homework that you turn in. But there's a quiz every week that you should prepare for I actually think the quizzes were harder than the exams.
I took her class in the Fall to retake Chemistry and it was very time consuming. All of her quizzes were much harder than the exams and she was very nitpicky on how to do the equations for certain units on the labs. She would not let you do the lab if the lab was done with a pencil which is incredibly stupid in my opinion.
Sumita is a great professor. Others say that she's strict, but in reality she's clear and concise about her expectations. She repeats important details often and people still don't follow directions. She expects participation on zoom to make sure that there is understanding from the class. She is kind and explains concepts well.
No extra credit, the only points you can get is via labs, exams, or the weekly quizzes. She's very nice and understanding, and explains things clearly. The labs are time consuming but that's just college. The only bad thing is that you CANNOT miss class or it's an automatic F, and you HAVE to work with a partner. Tests are multiple choice though!
Took the entire OCHEM series. A- for both Fall and Winter but a C in Spring. A very knowledgeable professor. Very strict but cares for you & reminds you to prioritize mental health. Lots of quizzes. Practice constantly. Some of the quiz and exam questions are taken from in-class problems and practice sheets so pay attention. Office hours helps!
unfair unreasonable hard to understand
Singh is VERY impatient and intolerant. She acts as though everything is set up to be a respectable college-level class, but then takes up to 50 minutes of the in-person lab period to explain the lab directions that we ALREADY had to read beforehand. Expects timeliness, yet rushes you. Very ridiculous teacher that expects more than she offers.
Over-hated. Instead of giving you an online textbook, she walks through each problem step-by-step through zoom, making things easier to understand and for me easy to not fall behind. As long as you show up to the zoom, put effort, you should do well. Her zoom recordings are very helpful whilst reviewing in future classes, don't take them granted!
Sumita is a very nice teacher, but she is very hard. She definitely cares about her students, but you need to expect to do 2/3 hours of chemistry every day to do well. My final was a multiple-choice final, and it was genuinely the most difficult final I have ever taken. If you take this class, make sure you take it with easy classes.
Professor Singh was a good Professor; she's strict with her rules, but I understand that she needs to be if we want to take future chemistry classes, since we'll need to master the fundamentals. Her tests were pretty hard in my opinion, I'd always run out of time but I came out with a decent score. I took calc and sci at the same time so a bitdiff.
A Very Hard teacher with heavy assignments and labs that were extremely strict. Wants you to only focus on her class.
I did not finish her class due to health issues and family issues I was facing. This professor deserves a good review because she answered questions well, she was available and she was more than helpful when I was going through health issues. She knows her craft well. I very much appreciate her.
Professor Singh is a great chemistry professor and have very clear instructions during labs. The only thing I have a complaint about is how we weren't allowed any note cards on the final so studying extra is needed for this class.
