If you took AP statistics or even just regular statistics during your high school year, then here is a free letter grade "A". He gave a lot of extra credits questions on the quizzes. Homework is little tedious and sometimes hard to do. But you will be fine.
This teacher does not speak english very well at all. When I say that, I mean it is incomprehensible about 90% of the time. He gets frustrated with questions and rarely answers them, and when he does try to answer them, the answers give little to no confirmation. For someone who struggles with math, this is a nightmare. Avoid at all costs.
This teacher assigns things he doesn't teach. I hope you didn't want a weekend either. 60 problems is him going light.
Sung really cares about your success when you work with him. He will often do out of hours work and specialize on helping you in the class if you need it.
I liked Sung Chan's direct teaching style. He will be available for office hours quite a bit if you have any problems. He does go pretty hard on homework and daily quizzes but that much repetition makes the exams a lot easier.
Professor sung was really amazing. For math 3070 everyday you have a quiz and before lecture starts he gives you a quiz review and then at the end of the class the actual quiz which is exactly like the review with different numbers. His exams are super easy, if you do well on the quizzes then his exams won't be difficult at all. learned a lot!!
Prof Choi was a pretty solid teacher. Hes pretty understanding when it comes to making up quizzes, extending hw deadlines, and offering help outside of class. The only things that would improve this class are not having a quiz every time we have class and it wouldve been nice to have more time for test reviews.
Sung chan doesn't take attendance but he gives daily quizzes and he gives a ridiculous amount of homework. His tests are nothing like what he teaches. He is the worst professor I have ever taken, especially for math. Unless you want to teach yourself don't take a class with him.
He is one of the nicest professors I've ever had. He made the lectures fun and always did a review exactly like the daily quiz we'd have everyday. Study guides for each test are extremely helpful, and he did everything he could to help his students out at the end of the course (dropping extra quizzes, redoing the curve on old tests, bonus points).
He really cares about students and generous to students. He teach student well. if you want to study that course accurately. you will absolutely love this course!
THE WORST. Doesn't teach, just reads through the textbook. Gets mad when students don't understand or ask questions. Gives quizzes at the end of every class, but often forgets until the last minute, yet he still gives out the quizzes so we usually got out 5-10 mins late. This class was super frustrating a huge waste of time, 0/10 recommend.
I liked his class, if you took math in high school and did well than theres nothing to worry about. He reviews everything clearly and lets you have a sheet of notes for tests. Would recommend!
He is the worst professor I have ever seen. First of all, his class rules are very rigid, which doesn't matter. The main thing is that many of his notes in class are wrong, and you will find that his answers to the same question are completely inconsistent with the answers in the book. The exam will be very, very difficult, and you won't be able to
the worsest teacher, a heavy accent. will not curve the point, exam covering A LOT OF PROBLEM he did not taught IN CLASS. do not answer your e-mail if you ask some questions, is a very irresponsible teacher! Besides, he will not curve any point including any exams, his notes has many typos, he is very irresponsible!!!!!!
A lecturer (only a lecturer) who likes to hurt people with words and has implicit discrimination against boys. Has Terrible Personality Problems
Gives daily quizzes and has them due at 5pm for whatever reason (not that he grades them that night)- and the quizzes are extremely difficult and often take a couple of hours just to figure out one whole question. Hard to understand and speeds through material extremely fast. Made what could be an easy class really difficult.
Daily quizzes, quizzes and test make up vast majority of grade. I don't feel like his lectures are helpful for the homework or quizzes, the majority of the time I had to watch youtube or read the textbook to understand the topic.
i've been really stressed out in his class. He gives daily quizes which is impossible to finish on time... Also he has yelled and verbally insulted students. Terrible instructor.
I took choi's class fall 2020. Now I'm scared of taking his class again but unfortuntly I have to beacuse I'm graduating this summer. I dont know why department let him teach summer 2021 again. His daily quizzes were really stress me out. Also, leacture content was nothing related to exam so I have to take hours learning everything on youtube.
This is definitely a class that can be scary the first few weeks but if you keep going at it, it'll become easier. His teaching is a little difficult to understand but as long as you use your resources, whether it be the TA's or taking to Prof. Choi, they'll work with you. He was very accommodating and did his best to help us pass the class.
Class rule is rigid, you have to be physically in the class to get daily quizzes. Classes are super dry consist of him writing out theorem and proofs from textbook. if you are looking to pass, you better choose other professors
Prof. Choi assigns lots of homework (9 assignments in the summer semester), quizzes (nearly) every class, two midterms, and a comprehensive final. He is quite lenient in grading. Overall grading is nice: 1) he drops the six lowest quiz scores, 2) for exams he would give 12 questions and grade 10 (extra credit if you're fast).
This is definitely a class that can be scary the first few weeks but if you keep going at it, it'll become easier.
Thick Korean accent with a whispery voice. Gives an ungodly load of homework with rare extensions. Has a quiz every class, couldn't decide if it should be in class or take home so my course flip-flopped between the two. In class "studying" is just ripping examples from the notes with no change what so ever so why even bother?
I was sick and missed an entire week of class and Sung Chan Choi was very helpful. He sent me all quizzes (they are daily) and gave me extensions on quizzes, hw, and a lab that was due that week. You have to go to class to get the quiz, so make sure you're not regularly missing class. His homeworks are pretty long, but he is very accommodating
He gets gets of bad rap but I made a leap of faith and I dont regret it. The notes were set up so you wouldn't waste your time writing proofs. There are quizzes but they are take home and often very similar to the examples covered in class. The labs were REALLY tough on your own and I often didn't do them. He is pretty cool, the class is tough
Absolute Hell. I cannot explain how many sleepless nights I had over this class. Choi made us take a quiz every single day. We had over 50 quizzes near the end. He grades exams like his life depends on it and doesn't care about anyone's mental health. With labs, homework, and hour-long quizzes, get ready to drop everything in your life to pass. rip
Professor Choi is an incredibly caring professor. He does a fantastic job making very difficult subjects manageable. Is very well organized, and tells you exactly what will be on the tests. He teaches some very difficult subjects which is why some people are angry about his classe. If you don't want to work then you shouldn't take high-level math.
Choi was awesome! He was accomodating and when students complained about him being too quiet, he bought a portable mic and speaker. Even though sometimes he's hard to understand, sit in the front and you'll be fine. Also provided his own notes, which made studying and following along a lot easier. Homework is straightforward, tests aren't too bad.
Prof. Choi is a fantastic teacher. He really cares about his students and takes time our of his office hours and personal life to help his students with any help they need. He responds to emails even when it is very late. I think it is admirable that he is such a great teacher despite having a hard time speaking english.
Incredibly caring and competent prof. He's so helpful in many ways:responds to emails quickly, available outside of class, takes extra time from his office hours to help if struggling. People think he is very strict, but he is very lenient. Despite having a language barrier, he works very hard and makes his material relevant and easy to understand.
An absolutely amazing professor. You might think that daily quizzes are rough, but they are not difficult and do wonders to reinforce the material. He walks you through a review sheet that is almost exactly the same at the beginning of class. He never takes it for granted you know something and reiterates a lot. Best math teacher I've ever had.
He is pretty relaxed and he tries to help the students hear him better with a mic.
Daily graded quizzes, but they are the exact problems you'll get on tests. His tests are also very easy. Amount of problems on weekly homework could be dialed down a bit, but otherwise a great teacher.
(There were no options to choose MATH 1220 on the source code so I had to select 1210). I took Calc 2 from him. He's a great, caring, and generous professor, and exams were primarily based on quizzes. I would definitely take other math courses with him next time. Just beware of attendance and daily quizzes.
He takes ages to grade...like AGES. Also yells...everybody has bad days but to yell at students asking questions...yikes. Quizzes were helpful.
Calc 2 is difficult for most students to begin with. Professor Choi is often difficult to understand, has nearly illegible handwriting, and quizzes every lecture was excessive. I had to teach myself this class in its entirety just to pass. The only thing that got me through was him allowing a notes sheet on midterms. Don't recommend for calc 2.
The structure of this class is one of the best I've ever had. He had clear lecture notes that he followed along with daily quizzes and weekly homework. The daily quizzes were short and typically not too difficult and they truly reinforced what we were currently learning. The homework was not too much and help was available if needed.
Professor Choi was a great teacher who had a very straightforward setup for the class. With quizzes every single class period, it's really important not to miss class as much as you can, but I can tell you right now those quizzes help so much. I did little studying for this course and relied mainly on the quizzes to learn, I highly recommend him.
Well organized class. Lectures were easy to follow, he had very clear explanations on the subject. He has quizzes everyday but 8 drops so it's okay to miss a class then and there. As long as you do good on the quizzes and use them to study, you can pass his tests. In this class I was able to genuinely learn the material and do good on exams.
Sungchan is a wonderful professor and probably my favorite math professor I have had at the U. There is a quiz each class but he does a review that is nearly identical to the quiz each day at the start of class. He genuinely cares about his students and is always an open door for questions. Be respectful and responsible and you will do fine!
This professor is a joke. He takes half the class reviewing for the daily quiz, and only 10-20 minutes teaching new material. Then he complains we are slow and behind. The exams are very difficult, and most of your grades are based on them. Also, DAILY QUIZZES are also difficult. The homework has no correlation to the lecture. Would not recommend
Daily quizzes were given in this class, but a review was done at the beginning that had the exact same format as the quiz, just with different numbers. Overall I had a decent learning experience with this professor, he may seem harsh at first but he can be accommodating and funny as you get more into the year.
Took eng calc 2 with him, hardest class I've taken with an insane amount of material to cover but he was a great teacher and really got me to work and learn a lot. If I would've taken this class under anyone else I likely would've failed
Sung Chan is a very good professor and does genuinely do his best for his students. 5080 is notoriously difficult, a fact which isn't helped by the textbook. Sung Chan distilled this textbook into something more readable and essentially rewrote the textbook, correcting its flaws. Prepare for daily quizzes, homeworks require some time and thought.
Being allowed to have a note sheet on the exams was the only thing that helped me pass. Calc 2 is hard to begin with, but taking it with Sung Chan is harder. He flies- like speeds- through the material and gives a quiz every class so attendance is mandatory.
Sung Chan is difficult to understand but his handwriting isn't illegible. He really wants to see his students succeed!! I went to his office hours every week and we formed a really good bond. I took this class a year ago and everytime I see him still, he still says hi and we chat. He wrote a good reference letter for me.
3220 is a HARD class. Most topics will be confusing at some point. I took this class in Fall 2023. There were daily quizzes assigned every day of class, as well as homework every week/biweekly sometimes. As for exams, well the only reason I got a B is because how forgiving he grades exams. He speaks quietly and with an accent. Good lecture layouts.
Super funny Does a lot of examples making it easy to learn.
Teaches well, short quizzes every lecture but they are due 11:59pm day of. Homework is a little lengthy, assigned once a week. He does care about his students, goes based off the textbook and never waste time.
Daily quizzes but they truly help you learn. It's obvious he truly cares about his students' learning and he does his best to assist each student to help them succeed. He will make sure that everyone gets the concept before moving on. One of the only classes that I truly learned a lot and felt confident about. Definitely a top-tier professor.
Daily quizzes are kind of a hassle but they don't take much time. Seems scary initially but is actually pretty nice. Exams are copies of his quizzes (90% avg). Straightforward and pretty easy, especially compared to other professors.
Took his class for Engi. Calc 2 and Diff Eq. He is an incredibly fair but tough teacher. He will never testor give you hw on something he hasn't taught you on. Attedance is mandatory but tbh his class is the only one I look forward to.
One of the best professors I have every had in math. Made things clear, lectures notes you can look back at are very well written out. Many example problems. We did have daily quizzes and a handful of homework but the quizzes are short and based on that day's problems. Honestly a very good way to practice, exams were similar difficulty to quizzes!
I did the best I ever have in any math class as Sung Choi as my 2250 teacher. He had daily quizes that helped a ton to get ready for the exams. Homework and a lab every week which also helped to get ready for the exams. He is hard to understand but if you go to the tutoring center, you will easliy get a good grade.
I learned a ton in this class. Prof. Choi was very clear and detailed in the way he explained things and was thorough about showing the steps to solve each problem. His quizzes and note sheets helped reinforce what we learned in class, the exams were always based directly off of them. He was always nice and pleasant to students. Highly recommend!
It can be really hard to understand him at times. Mr. Choi does give out daily quizzes, so attendance matters, that are due the next day, but most of the problems are pulled out from the lectures. Exams are very similar to the quizzes. Mr. Choi is a great professor though, just be weary by the quizzes, they can be challenging at times.
He is good at teaching, but a VERY unfair grader. Spent 20+ hours a week on homework alone. 50 % of your homework grade was on completion, 50% was if you did 1 question (a question he chose a random) correctly. Did I learn well and a lot in his lectures? Yes. Did I struggle finding the time to sleep with the amount of homework he gave? Also yes.
His teaching style made complex mathematical concepts easy to understand. I really liked the class structure, and he genuinely cares about his students. He comes well-prepared for each session, and after taking his class, you can't help but grasp math better. Highly recommend!
He gave us not on intensive homework, but a daily take home quiz. Balancing both was difficult. I would have been ok with one or the other, but this class just was burdensome.
He gives out a daily quiz, which I suppose would be fine but he also gives out lengthy and difficult homework along with this quiz. It was hard to balance both and he makes us show up to receive the quiz, which is stupid that he polices attendance.
Attendance isn't graded, but you have to be in class to receive the quiz + lots of homework. Other than that, his teaching style is great and he explains the content in a very understandable and simple way. Exams are graded very leniently and are similar to the daily quizzes. Very funny and down-to-earth professor.
I took his Calc 3 in the summer. He is an amazing and hilarious man, and he teaches you the important things.
Choi is the goat. He does give a lot of hw. He also gives daily quizzes which can be annoying but if you do them you will easily pass the class. Attendance is required because you need to come to class to get the quiz and they're part of your grade. Tests are easy and basically reprints of the questions on the quizzes. The hw is very tedious.
Dude lectures very concisely and the tests are the same questions from the daily quizzes.
while the material could be tough, sung choi was able to make it all so easy to understand
Lots of quizzes, but Exams are straightforward and not too hard. Attendance is basically mandatory but he taught the material extremely well.
He's a king. There are daily quizzes that you have to get in class, but they really help understand the material. The quizzes are like the tests and he genuinely wants you to understand. Love him!
Vector Calculus and PDEs for engineers. The daily quizzes are annoying and time consuming, but they force you to learn. Basically it's a lot of content for one class, but he teaches it pretty well. Super organized guy.
Sung Chan was good at pushing understanding of the material. He would take time in lectures to show some examples and push understanding. Beware of daily quizzes, which arent that difficult if you pay attention in class, as they make up a good chunk of your grade. Exams were easier than hw, which could be tedious. He offered extra credit in exams.
Choi is the goat, yes he gives you daily quizzes but they aren't hard especially if you do them right after class.
This professor loathes his students. He will berate anyone for questions and say they aren't paying attention, alienating his own class. Even after asking for questions. He's a 3/5 at explaining things at best. Daily quizzes to check attendance and the way he behaves I can best describe is a middle school professor having a midlife crisis. Avoid.
I can usually understand teachers well, but when I am LITERALLY PAYING $3000 to take Multivariable Calculus and the instructor can't speak complete english sentences, I want to sue the university. How do these executives let people like this teach? He needs to work on his english and get a better mic and PLEASE take your job seriously. Do not take.
Took his summer Calc 3. Definitely a language barrier but he will answer all questions asked. Not a bad lecturer and he gives you up to 10 points of extra credit on every test so its pretty hard to fail... Exams are very similar to quizzes but the homework can be difficult at times.
Good lectures and use of daily quizzes hammers home the concepts. Provides extra credit on tests. My low rating comes from regularly leaving work ungraded for long periods of time, requiring attendance to be able to work on the quizzes, curving the class to be competitive, high work time ratio on tests, and HW is time intensive redundant busy work.
Professor connects concepts well to previous knowledge to make it easier and faster to learn. He answers questions very thoroughly if you go up to him during break or after class. Homework can be a lot but exams are easy to study for.
His goal is to make your life difficult. Not willing to work with you at all, and probably prides himself off of how unnecessarily difficult he makes his class. Gives daily quizzes and he hasn't even graded half of them -- AND the semester's over. The quizzes near the end were COMPLETELY derailed of the content we learned in class. Take ANYONE else
He's probably the best math professor I had despite the low reviews. His lecture notes were helpful studying for quizzes. His tests are VERY SIMILAR to quiz questions and we get a two sided note sheet. Homework was busy work and annoying. Hes a very straight to the point and blunt man but unintentionally funny. Some people can't handle tough love
I got 102% and loved this class, it was so hard though. I think his class structure makes the workload unnecessarily excessive, however it helped me learn the material better than ever. Daily quizzes were hard to juggle with my disability, but if you put the time in this class will set you up to learn well.
Take any math class you can with him. You will not regret it
Such a great professor, gives you points wherever he can (dropping lowest 6 quiz grades, lowest 3 hw assignments, and lowest midterm grade), and gives amazing notes for how to do things, however he does do a quiz every time you are in class. The quizzes are fairly easy as long as you paid attention in lecture.
Dr. Choi is a very tough professor, and is big on attendance. However, he offers a lot of extra credit during exams. The daily quizzes are actually very helpful to study from and overall his lecturing style is very clear and concise. Overall I would definitely recommend taking a math class with Dr. Choi.
Prof choi is not terrible at teaching, hes just very hard to understand and he says that the language barrier isn't an issue and shouldn't be an excuse. You have daily quizzes and he's very strict on attendance. I don't think the material was particularly hard itself, but it became difficult because you have to teach yourself all of the material.
I would advise against taking this professor if you actually want to understand the material you are learning. He is very hard to follow and gives daily quizzes, so attendance is ESSENTIAL to receive a passing grade. He is nice and can be understanding, but I would definitely try to get anyone else.
Professor Choi was good, You have to go to class because of daily quizes, however these quizes are pretty easy and often are taken home. Exams are honestly easy and he gives plenty of resoruces. GO TO CLASS. Also drops lowest 6 quzies and homeworks and lowest exam score. Overall pretty easy class. Hard to understnad but if you listen your fine.
I only say lots of homework because he gives daily take home quizzes but they're always related to that day's lecture. His notes are great and the tests directly mirror the quizzes. Easy way to study and he wants you to pass.
Love this guy! Comes across a little rude at first but ends up being one of the best professors. Daily quizzes are a little annoying but super helpful in the long run since he bases exam questions off them. Makes tough concepts easy to understand through lots of example problems. Difficult course but very easy to succeed if you put in the work.
If you attend lecture every day and do the quizzes, you'll easily pass. Teaches the material concisely with good examples. Exams are just the quizzes with different numbers. Hard to understand his English sometimes and doesn't answer questions well, so just look those up later. ATTENDANCE IS ESSENTIAL. Funny guy too, first time I've liked math.
I really enjoyed his class! If you come to every class and pay attention during his lectures then it is an easy A. Even thought English isn't his first language, his lessons are really easy to follow and he is good at explaining! He is also really funny and his class was very chill. Also exams are EXACTLY like the quizzes!
Be prepared for a heavy workload, but the path to an A is very clear. While the weekly homework feels like busy work, the daily quizzes are actually the most important part of the class because they mirror the exams exactly. The lectures also align perfectly with the exams. If you show up every day and master the quizzes, you will pass easily.
