Knows the subject quite well, but has absolutely no teaching skills whatsoever.
very very Intellegent!! But you have to keep up with him and his hand writting.
Was very good teacher, very helpful and friendly outside of class as well, overall great guy to have as a teacher!
knows his stuff, but his teaching skills are not there.
Very intelligent, but not when it comes to teaching. Gets frustrated easily and has mood swings. Often left class before it was over:(
Good in the labs. Friendly. Does good job at teaching us in the lab. Easy to talk to.
His teaching is good
Great guy, easy to talk to and explains everthing in great detail.
Good knowledge of material, and easy to understand
mood swings. maybe its the estrogen pills he's taking. good knowledge of material, friendly guy unless you make fun of him or talk during class, or have a girl with some sort of mental disorder in your class, then its just comedy.
Smart guy. Write down every details on the whiteboard. But still not easy to follow him. His exam is hard. His teach skills isn't good
Although this course was exactly the same as math 31, I didn't have a bloody clue what this guy was doing all term. His notes are illegible and hasn't a clue as to how to teach this material . I'd avoid this guy at all costs! Find one of the good ones.
Sunil has little regard for the cognitive development of his students. I don't know why he is teaching; he is not interested in doing anything over and above the lecture in class. Do not take this course for spring/summer session.
A very good prof who knows his stuff well. Attend his lectures regularly and pay attention during classes..do ur assignments and u shud do just fine :) . Not all that helpful outside the classroom, but overall he is good i guess.
Useless, a waste of space
He wasn't very clear in his teaching methods. Hard to follow what he was doing on the board and didn't explain how it related to the textbook. It was like learning 2 completly different things. Sometimes we accomplished alot in class, but others he talked about parachuting the whole time.
I THOUGHT THAT MATH WAS GREAT UNTIL I MET THIS PROFESSOR,FIRST I CONFRIM THAT HE EXPLAINS O.K THAT IS HIS JOB BUT HE WAS NEVER FAIR TO ME AND TREATS STUDENT DIFFERENT,THE ONES HE LKES ONLY HE HELPS EVENTHOUGH PARTICIPATED AND ATTENDED HIS CLASSESD REGULARLY AND RESPECTED HIM. I WOULD SAY THAT NEEDS A COUPLE OF COURSES IN HOW TO DEAL WITH STUDENTS!
Excellent teacher
Horrible writing and a little lazy, but better than Nataliya Zadorozhna. Take his spring/summer Math 113/114 course.
excellent
Not the cream of the crop at all, his lectures on the board are very hard to follow and are confusing.
If you like someone who can teach quickly (which i like b/c i get bored) This is your man. He can be a dick sometimes but when it comes down the nitty gritty he actually does care about his students. I took his class twice. The second time there was only 8 students and he was very helpful when you ask. You cant be afraid to ask and push your idea.
One of those slack teachers, that doesnt do extra work if he doesnt have to. He teachs what is goin to be on the exam nothing extra, tests are easy, but trying to understand stand can be a challenge.
Sunil doesn't have respect for students. Won't answer your questions and is very rude. Stay away from this guy or your blood will boil and your GPA will drop!
First week (spring session) made little sense but if you stick with it the tests are OK. More support from fellow students than prof! He is unhelpful with specific concerns unless you really push.
very nice !
Not very good. Did not care what the students marks were.
too fast, and he was too silent at times,
Not much help on assignments. He did the bare minimum of his job.
I'm not much of a math person but i can't read his writing. He doens't encourage any class involvment and then makes his students feel dumb. His tests are fair. I did horrible on the final exam and expected a F, but I ended up with a C-. SECRET: ATTEND HIS CLASSES
yeah he can be rude sometimes... but the fact is he knows his stuff, teaches you what you need to know and his tests are very fair... if you go to class you'll be fine
He is extremely unhelpful and doesn't like to help if you need extra help. He actually will laugh if you don't understand something he thinks is simple. Worst prof I've ever had. I hate that class.
This guy is awesome. Alot of people think he's "unhelpful" but that's because they're expecting the answers! He encourages you to do it yourself. That's the only way you'll know what you're doing. All in all, if you're taking MATH 160, take it with this guy
Worst professor i've ever had. Refuses to help, and has one or two pets in the class that love him, and i'm guessing that's who gave a good evaluation. he gets angry when you ask questions, and wastes time in class, DOES NOT HELP AT ALL. Take this class with Tiina Hohn, i wish i had, cause this guy is useless.
he is the worse teacher EVER..he is rude most of the time. i feel he is ****. he only focus on the students he 'likes' and he doesnt care for the others. doesnt help if we have any questions. and he expects too much.
Very very very very rude teacher. Puts students down very often and expects us to know material even if we have never seen it. CONSTANTLY humiliates students. Makes the student feel like an idiot if they answered wrong. Instead of helping his students he tells you to get it from a classmate.YOU ****! We are paying you to teach us not to insult us
by far the worst prof i have EVER had. He is rude and disrespectful to his students and makes you feel stupid if you dont understand something. He does the bare minimum required for his job and if you need help wont tell you anything he just tells you to go to the math help center. He doesnt care if his students. He is a ****
GREAT TEACHER. I had him this spring and he was the best. he really take time to go through question when you need help. i was nervous about taking this class because i hate math but i had to for nursing...and i did just fine. i would recomend him to anyone taking stats. don't listen to the other comments his just great.
This guy sucks. Zero help. Changes format of questions on the final. Avoid.
doesn't give a**** about his class/students. could care less how people do in the class. he is never prepared and for some reason finds it humorous and tells you straight up that he puts absolutely no effort in whatsoever. he probably knows his stuff but he's really bad at 'teaching.' thank god for the stats guy in the math help center.
He is degrading to the students and gets frustated when NONE of us understand! Went to ask for help, but he laughed because we were doing it wrong, and then had to leave.
OK, he can be a bit rude and unprepared but he is actually helpful during office hours (not help sessions)as long as you are VERY explicit in your question. If you plan on going on in Stats, you'll survive. If not, get a different prof.
He can be really degrading to the students I noticed and doesn't seem to like to give help when you ask about something you don't understand. His tests are fair and if you go to class and study you should do fine.
He is very rude and annoying. The material isn't bad,I didn't know what the hell I was doing and still ended up with a B in the end.He is easier to understand than the other stats profs but isn't very helpful. If you do need help with the homework, don't go to him, go to Allan Wesley the lab prof,he really knows his stuff. The labs will help you a lot
Solid teach.
He does mumble and if you don't sit near the front it is hard to understand him but he is a really good teacher. I got an A in his class. He gives you hints on what is going to be on tests which ends up being very helpful. The class is an easy class and barren makes it even easier. I would definitely recommend him
he is very easy going and chilled out. easy grades
Awesome! always there for extra help! If you take his class pay attention cause he gives away hints for excatly what will be on finals and midterms! read your notes and do the assignments and its impossible to fail!! =)
He's a solid prof, goes through everything thoroughly and makes sure every student understands whats going on. If you put in the time and study for his tests and do the assignments, its not that hard of a course.
Very nice person made class fun considering it was 8am. Had many clues as to what was going to be on the exams. Must attend class and study to do well.
rudest teacher i have ever had. does not talk clear. makes fun of nursing students. does not offer help. ignores your questions. laughs in your face when you ask a question. thinks he is hot but is totally NOT. thinks he gets all the attention from the ladies but doesnt. do not recommend this teacher if you are female and have a hard time with math
Suni is disrespectful to women.
He is rude, sarcastic, unapproachable, doesn't give back homework, is inflexible, and generally makes attending this class even more painful than the subject matter requires. If I had know it was going to be this difficult to deal with him, I would have taken it through U of A Faculty of Extension.
terrible teacher. irresponsible, and rude
Notes were incomprehensible most of the time and he mumbles, so sit closer to the front. The one time I went to him for help, he was very rude and sarcastic. I hate math to begin with, he made me hate it even more.
As long as you attend his class and and do the homework assignments you will do well in the class. If you do poorly on his first midterm but can pass the final, he's the kinda guy that can see you have a clear grasp of the material and you will still end up passing the class. It's tough finding a good stats prof, and Sunil was pretty solid.
I am truly surprised with the other rating and I don't believe they are deserved. Well spoken teacher who, perhaps to his detriment is teaching a generally unpopular subject. The exams are not easy and the assignments which cover the content are not returned beforehand. I went to see him at his office and he was helpful.
Sunil does what he can as far as a math course goes. He is consistent in his teaching style and is willing to continue to go over topics until the students understand them. His exams are unclear and different from the practice exams. Be sure to understand formulas from the text book and not as he does because his tests use the one from the text.
He's okay, I didn't enjoy class that much exams arent that hard their pretty fair
I really enjoyed his teaching style. Took it slow and built on top of that. I enjoyed going to class every day. He's actually a easy going and overall cool guy. However, I found exams to be slightly difficult. All and all pretty fair. I would take another class taught by him!
good teacher cool style
I found him easy to learn from and liked his notes, he has a sense of humor that can make him sound like he's putting people down. His midterm was really hard and the practice exam he sent out was useless and had nothing to do with the actual midterm.
He mumbles, writes messy, very unclear. He is rude and unhelpful. He starts out okay and things go downhill. Stay away!!
Understand the following before you take his class. A) You are on your own B)If you need help, you are stupid (in his opinion)at C) Be prepared to be mocked at D) Pray to God or whatever you believe gives you the power to not get frustrated on Math/Stat because of a single Rude teacher who is reluctant to do his bare minimum for students Good Luck
If you practice questions from his notes and homework/textbook questions you will do really good in his class. He gives lots of hints and his notes are really good. As for his attitude that's a different story. He can be rude and sarcastic. Make sure to sit up front, he mumbles and his writing is very messy.
Well, practically i took math 100 which was taught by multiple teachers, so you could ask teachers from the other sections if he is no help. Sunil is okay, but typically don't blame the profs. Sunil can be sarcastic and rude, but don't get that get in your way, ignore his taunts. Ask him specific questions, not dumb ones.
I take every class I possibly can with Sunil. He's a great prof, not always the best with students who don't come to class but to those of us who do he's always willing to help. Very very smart guy, cares about students who care about school. I recommend him to anyone who has the option of taking his courses. Very fair exams.
lol this guys a joke, the class is easy but i didn't go to class, i taught myself. He's really rude, has a black belt in karate and thinks hes crazy haha, stares down student and such, like wow im shocked someone like this can get a professional job. Sorry sensai, but you need to practice some modesty and patience.
Sunil is rude and makes people feel stupid when they ask questions. His writing is really small and hard to read and he talks quietly. He seems to erase the board within a few minutes of writing them, so write your notes fast! If you take his class sit at the very front, or better yet just AVOID his class. He is not lenient when he marks tests.
AVOID HIM IF YOU CAN! Rude, disrespectful, will ignore your questions, expects you to know everything before learning it and if you don't, he acts like you're not even there. Openly makes fun of those who struggle in class, if you seek help and see him in his office, all he'll say to you is you're not trying hard enough and tell you to leave. AWFUL
Comes off as a total jerk, but once you get to know him, he is actually really nice. Good teacher, good explanations, very open to helping you. Exams can be pretty tough, just review assignments and in class examples. AND DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Its a must in his class.
Will answer any questions. Teaches calculus so don't expect easy marks
He's an okay teacher, but his writing is small and he mumbles a lot so I suggest sitting near the front. Be careful with the questions you ask him (be specific, not general) otherwise he'll either be rude about it or he won't answer your question at all. His notes aren't very helpful, but the questions on his assignments are often on the midterm.
I'm not sure why people hate on Sunil so much he is all around a great teacher. If you go to class you will do well in the class. He has messy writing yes but all his notes and example are clear and straight forward. Also do the homework he puts questions from there on the exam. A lot of his examples in class are on exams as well. Good teacher.
Biggest beauty, unreal math prof. Sarcastic if you ask idiotic questions, so don't ask stupid questions.
I don't know why he is rated so poorly. A good instructor, if a bit outside the box. His tests are based off the assignments, so you get no surprises. Show up to class, pay attention, stay on top of your homework, and you'll be okay.
very clear when explaining, exams are not too hard, homework is very beneficial, although sometimes he does explains very quickly, but if you ask him to repeat his explanations he will, all together a really good proff.
Sunil was pretty good, and he was quite engaging. Calc isn't my strong suit, but he's always willing to help if you need it. SHOW UP FOR CLASS!!!! I can't stress this enough; he has no notes or PowerPoints, so if you do not attend class you are likely to fail
Doesn't do much to keep you awake... hard to focus because he talks quietly in his lectures. Difficult tests, seems to forget that calculus is not everyone's calling in life. He is there to help, though.
He probably has the shiniest head I've ever seen. All jokes aside, he's not that good of a teacher. He really doesn't seem to answer any of the questions and makes fun of you for not knowing something. He's a chill guy, but sometimes he can get annoying. He takes students to bars, and is friendly outside of class.
Quite honestly the worst math teacher and lab instructor I've ever had. He makes you feel stupid for asking a question, and really makes people believe that they can't do anything. He's rude and does the least he can for his students. Just because he does karate he thinks its okay to stare down students. MacEwan would be better without him.
He talks so fast, you will not understand a thing, he does not feel like explaining anything. So tries to confuse you so that no one talks in class making you want to learn since the material seems hard. But the second you go to another professor you will find everything easy
Very helpful. Goes over everything in detail. Always willing to help.
Sunil has really messy notes, doesn't like explaining things, and isn't incredibly patient in general. An intro calculus teacher really needs to give students leeway and that isnt what this guy does.
Not a good prof at all. Does not know how to explain things in a clear and concise manner. Expects you to understand everything he's doing on the board without fully explaining it. Does not seem to like to help students if they need it. Definitely wouldn't recommend him at all as a prof.
Really hard marker. He will not give you part marks.
The only thing bright about this class is his forehead. Black Mr. Clean, he is a part time black belt full time savage. But honestly get ready to lose marks on getting a question right.
Doesn't matter if you get the answer right, if you didn't do it his way you get zero. And i'm not exaggerating. He acts totally chill and as if the test will be easy and fair but then you get it back 2 weeks later and got 1/5 on all the questions for getting the right answer "in the wrong way"
He's a great prof, I just took Math114 with him and he's really good at explaining and takes the time to make sure you understand everything. Sometimes he goes really fast, but just ask and he'll tell you how he got everything. Would definitely recommend taking a class with him!
Sunil Barran, how do I even begin to explain Sunil Barran. He expects his students to understand math just as clearly as he does, and if you ask questions he ignores them. Be prepared to have some pretty brutal exams, in class notes and assignments are directly related but exam questions are always 2-3 times harder. Highly do not recommend him.
Funny guy but kind of sarcastic, dont ask stupid questions he wont give you a straight answer. Homework is fair, exams are fair, just do a lot of problems. Questions on the exams are similar to homework and what is done in class. Doesnt post anything so you will miss everything if you skip.
he is a GREAT teacher ! If you have the chance , pick him!
Must pay attention in class. Midterm questions are mostly from examples given in lectures.
He seems like a cool guy the first time you see him and it get's you excited. Though he's ethnic, he doesn't have too much of accent but he tends to mumble and write messy. It may be that he's arrogant but he was working with other profs. Do all the homework and your set, i blame my personal problems for the most part. not him though he marks hard
Sunil is one of my favorite profs! Really chill and nice. He explains everything clearly and logically, and if the class finds a topic difficult, he will go over it more to practice. It's essential to go to class, because he barely uses the textbook, and the exams are on his lecture notes. Definitely would take again! :)
Though his lectures and notes are fairly easy to follow, I found Sunil very unapproachable, and generally arrogant to many students. He is easy going and funny at times, but can be incredibly sarcastic and condescending. Midterms were very challenging, he does not give part marks. I was tutored by another prof in his department. Would not recommend
Hardest grater I have ever experienced. He won't answer emails or questions asked in class. He seems like he wasn't given a heart. He laughed at my face when I went to ask for notes for the class I missed due to my sisters funeral. He often makes fun of students questions in class and gets frustrated if someone asks him to repeat himself.
Sunil is a good teacher despite many bad ratings he's got. One thing about him is that many of his exam questions are similar to examples he gives in class. So you MUST come to class. You only need the textbook for homework, aside from that, study mainly his examples and you'll done just fine.
Sunil is a tough marker and makes you work for your marks, but I never felt like he was unfair. During lectures he would stop if anyone had a confused look, and let people catch up. Sunil is a very nice man outside of the class and often stops to talk, I feel as though sunil truly cares about his students. Would strongly recommend sunil.
His teaching wasn't too bad, decent marker and his exams were fair. For someone who isn't great at math to begin with, I found this class bearable. He came off as condescending during lectures many times. If you're decent at math related courses you'll be fine. You have to work for decent grades but it's not impossible with him.
Sunil is a great teacher. He is very fair when it comes to marks. If you demonstrate that you understand the theory but screw up the math he will give part marks fairly leniently. Make sure you go to class and pay attention to the harder examples he does, as those are the ones that show up on the exams.
Extremely condescending requires you to be interactive but makes it hard for you to be interactive because of the condescension. Would not take him as my professor.
Very good Prof basically tells you what type of questions will be n exams so you don't have to study everything, makes it very clear what is expected of you
He is a good prof. His practice exams is way more difficult than the real tests so don't worry.
Like with any math/stats course if you don't put any effort, it will be a very difficult and boring class. Sunil is a great professor, he wants you to do well but you have to show some work.
I have always hated anything related to math so this class wasn't so easy for me. Sunil seems to care for his students and lets you know what will be on the tests when you go over that material in class. He goes really quick through the lectures which leads you to go over the material again yourself to try and understand it.
Sunil deserves a better rating on here. I've had a few classes with him and honestly, he's a great teacher. His midterms and final exams are tough so know your stuff, but he is a very fair marker . He makes sometimes mistakes but always corrects them right away and always comes prepared to class, which is more than most profs can say. Go to class!!
Best of best good and funny guy. Very clear lecture. Very organize person .Do the hard homework question then exam is very easy Definitely take any class what he teach.
Sunil is a pretty good teacher. He tries to get to know his students and is always there for help if you need it. He also tries to not use the textbook as much as possible so you don't really have to get it.
Trust me. Sunil is good. He doesn't use the textbook, and the only thing that he asks for the mid and the finals are questions based on your notes and assignments. So definitely go to his class. It's not boring.
Sunil makes his learning outcomes very specific and only tests on what he goes over in class. The assignments were harder than the exams. I would highley recommend taking his class. No textbook is required for his class either so thats a plus.
Avoid at all costs. Expects students to understand everything he does before he even teaches it. Almost never goes through the logic/definitions of concepts, just does a bunch of examples all class without explaining them and I find that is barely helpful to do well in math. If I could give 0, I would.
He explains the concepts well. He is a great prof. A professor must be separated from the fearful math. You have to put in the hard effort to get the good grades. I will take the professor again.
Best prof . Super engage with material . Do not worry about test . It will be easy .
Tough grader. Did not know how to teach . Most of time just tells us answer right way . Exam super brutal . Put some questions your never seen it before . Ask questions he ignore them . Take other prof if you can
Great prof . Very funny guy. Makes math fun . Super friendly to students . Always want to you go success . If you practice more you can get A on his class . This is a good survey . Bad sampling because any one can eating any MacEwan University teacher without taking class from them .
Sunil is actually a gem. If you go to his class and write notes and do the assignments you will get an easy A. He only tests you on stuff that he has gone over in class or is on the assignment no surprises. Doesnt use a textbook so dont buy it. He is also very friendly if you have any questions about the assignment or lecture. 100 per ent recommend
I failed his class because of personal issues preventing me from going to most of the lectures. But for the lectures i did attend they were awesome, he is a good teacher and his tests are fair and are on what he says they are on. He follows the syllabus to the letter. The man is an absolute gem.
he does lots of examples and is an allright marker. you just have to go to every class
If you are thinking of taking, DON'T. I have never struggled so much with any other prof. Sunil Barran is a prof that does the absolute bare minimum for his students. He uses another teacher's lectures that don't match with the quiz or assignments he gives. Maybe he is better in person, but an extremely stressful class online.
He was not accessible outside the classroom and rarely ever answered questions we asked in class. The exams had nothing to do with material we learned in class
Professor was so damn rude and obnoxious to students. He would be late marking assignments like marking assignments after the quizzes were already done so we wouldn't know if we did the questions correctly. When another student asked him to do a question with another method he simply said no because it would take too much time. Very bad prof!
After studying with him, I doubt all the positive comments here. He does what a teacher does: show up to class, teach the concepts, give (not so helpful) note, assignments and (long) exams. Hes rude, condescending but he tries so hard to be a good prof but sorry! Wasted! Choose another prof if you can.
I would take 115 if he wasn't the only choice that fit my schedule. The only reason I passed let alone got a B- was because I took HS calc. Quizzes/Final and assign.'s were unfair, frequently said to "only use methods taught in class" yet gave us questions that had no previous "methods taught" to help. Needs to balance lecture/quiz material better.
Sunil is probably the worst math prof I've ever had. Teaches by the textbook, gave little effort, tests have questions never discussed. Idk how a faculty head can be so bad. Something is wrong when the class average on a test is below 50%. I somehow went from an A in 114 to dropping his class. Will NEVER take a class with him again. AVOID HIM!
Sunil is a smart and pleasant professor but that's about the only positive thing I can say about his class. His lectures are extremely fast paced, he only teaches from the textbook and does the absolute minimum to help his students. Unless you're naturally mathematically inclined it will be very easy to fall behind in this class.
Sunil is not the best professor for math. I took math 31 in high school and did decent in that course. Then I took this class, and it was terrible. He would do the bare minimum for the students and only show a SINGLE way to solve problems. If you solve the problem differently that was not taught in class; you will get a zero. Avoid him if you can.
Dont. Took an online class with him as the instructor, his lecture examples would always be minimal. Meanwhile, his assignments and tests involve questions that require heavy critical-thinking as well as a very roundabout way of solving it. He loves putting these edge-case questions on assignments and tests..
Sunil is one of the least helpful professors I've ever had. Since our class was online, we entered our questions through the chat on Zoom. Every question I've asked, he'd either give a useless answer or ignore it. In the middle of solving a problem, he'll skip halfway and give us the answer with no context, yet he wants you to show full work. Smh.
he was terrible during online learning would give us 4 hours of video on sunday to learn for the test on wednesday was terrible for returning marks i don't know the mark i got on the last 3 assignments or the final simply because he never posted them sent him an email asking about an assignment got a response back 6 days later after it was due
Terrible at getting assignments marked and handed back. When asked if we could get an assignment back before a quiz he didn't care and said it wasn't his problem since he doesn't mark the assignments, wouldn't contact the person who does either. How are we supposed to know if we are getting the questions right if they aren't graded before quizzes??
Shows lots of examples in class but often skips steps and writes down the answer with no insight or context for how he got from one step to the next. Rushes through examples and erases board while students are still trying to copy down the notes, only notes available are the ones taken in class, no slideshow, or copies of anything. So frustrating!
Good Professor, exams are a little difficult even with lots of textbook questions practice.
This professor while his online lectures were clear and accessible, he made all his assignments due at 12am instead of pm. Then on top of that there was a very strict grading system of 10% per hour and on exams 1%per minute. This cost me a lot of marks as I had classes running up until the deadline, and he simply took away the marks with no mercy.
This professor was not as great online as communication was slim, but accessible outside class and very helpful. Once you meet him he is very reasonable and tries his best to help you succeed. Other than that his test timings are quite strange but overall good teacher.
Teaches very clearly and simply and does a lot of example questions for each new math concept. Quizzes and tests are easy. Not a lot of homework. Very chill man. Would recommend.
Cool teacher, Really like him
There were no notes to follow during the lecture and nothing to look back on to study. There was no point going to class cause he just put examples on the board and then erased it before we could write it down. it was a really hard class to learn anything from
Had for114+115, self taught entire course by textbook when wasn't mandatory. Extremely rude; no respect when asked for help, not approachable professor. Quizzes; some examples in lecture were on tests but there were ones on topics not taught yet. Make sure you note everything single thing down, don't miss a lecture, courses harder than it should be.
If you're late on an assignment, you won't be able to hand anything in or do any makeup. His lectures are extremely unuseful. His explanations for questions are "let's do it this way for fun," and he never explains why we're doing something a certain way. I've completely self-taught myself this semester. He answers emails, so +1 rating for that...
Gives extremely hard questions for homework and tests. Lazy professor, he just give the answer for questions instead of explaining the concepts, or skips to the answer for difficult concepts. Will never give students extensions on assignments because he can't be bothered. I've self-taught myself his semester with youtube videos. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Traps students, sends reminder for quiz/assign. 1-2 weeks before due date and won't remind you again. No formula sheets for exams so knowledge is useless unless you have super memory. Late assignments are not tolerated unless someone died. Email response is poor, no practice given. I had a literal A- in Math 114 and had to drop his class.
Was doing well right up until the final. The difficulty between homework/midterms and the final skyrockets to the point where you ask yourself did you even learn anything that semester.
Very bad teacher. He clearly has a superiority complex and enjoys showing his students how good at math he is instead of actually teaching. He often does things "for fun" in class that provide no help and only complicates questions more. His lectures are very fast and he often solves questions without explaining where things came from. AVOID
If you have taken a highschool calc course math 114 is very easy for the first 3 tests. The prof is not bad he will teach you all the concepts but he is just boring. Whenever he is doing something "for fun" dont even bother writing it down. Assignments were good with answer keys and lectures are good but nothing special.
If you've taken calculus in high school you'll do okay as he teaches assuming you already know how to do everything, and will just show you how he can do more complex questions. Classes are dry and will do questions "for fun" which usually arent important. Quizzes are only 4-5 questions and he puts questions from the textbook not covered in class.
Great teacher. Great guy. Tests are easy if you put in the work.
I honestly do not recommend his class. I had an A in 114 and had to drop his class. It's pretty tough and he is not the best at explaining concepts and rushes through things. You're expected to have a lot of background knowledge
As long as you show up to class you will do okay, he explains what's going to be on his quizzes in the middle of class. Make jokes, do "questions for fun". Would take again
Quizzes are easy but the final worth 40% was extremely difficult compared to the quizzes, and he lied about what would be on the final..
His quizzes are easy, however, it doesn't prepare you for the final at all. The final is worth 40% of your grade, we received no reviews and were expected to know everything, but most of the questions on the final were only on one chapter. He never taught us how to do the questions that we're expected to know how to do on the final.
Do not take his class!! my friend and I had to withdraw mid-semester. I wasted 2 months for self-study but still could not catch up with him and his "for fun" questions, I wish I could rate him at the end of the semester but I had already dropped it, always check the rating of your professor, I did not and I regret wasting 2 months.
He smirks so much. Ask any question during class, and he'll shrug and smirk. Quizzes are worth 12% of your grade and the final 40% allowing no means to boost your grade with any assignments. He is super available after hours but even then, he's vague with the information he gives you. Do not take calc with him unless you know what you're doing.
Hard to understand, messy notes, homework content does not translate to tests. But he was pretty funny
Sunil is smart and helpful WHEN ASKED. However, it seemed like he was lacking a certain desire to help you learn on a regular basis. Imagine throwing a kid into the pool sans floatation device to learn to swim. His teaching style is quite disjointed. He will test you on gotchas. Was not the worst, but certainly not the best prof.
If you are considering Sunil's class for 114, it was either an "if you get it, you get it", or "if you don't, you don't" that determines your performance in this course. His quizzes are easy, as he usually tells you a clear outline of what material will be tested on, but they don't prepare you for the 40% final whatsoever. Chill class, hard exam.
Made me rethink my career path and choose to start cleaning a Wendy's bathroom for $14 an hour for a living instead. Worst final exam I've ever taken. Why am I paying $8k in tuition so I can solve questions that he put on the final "FOR FUN"?? Have to be stronger than a Vietnam war vet if you want to survive his class.
As someone who is not good at math, he was not for me. I know many people in the class who really liked him, but they are much smarter than me when it comes to math. He is funny, but I felt blindsided on the final. His notes are tough to read, and we weren't able to submit assignments due to their new rules regarding AI cheating.
Gives 6 quizzes drops your lowest grade which is nice but the final is worth 40% no extra assignments to save your grades. Does questions 'for fun' which complicates it even more. Quizzes and final are based on things not covered in class very advanced things only found deep in the textbook. Organic chem tutor will have to teach u the whole course.
Good guy, not an awesome prof. He is available outside class time but wasn't overly helpful. I am not a math person so I had to spend a lot of time studying and trying to keep up (felt like I was drowning). Quizzes (6x worth 10% each) were not bad but the final was very difficult and worth a lot (40%). If you like math, he isn't the worst option.
idk why people hating, if you show up to class and actually follow along, it will be doable as he as almost exact same questions in class. He does not test stuff that havent been taught in class and everything pretty straight forward
Sunil gives REAL math lectures given in the moment which means you have to be present IN THE MOMENT. There is clear passion when he teaches. Got me into math!!
If you miss a day don't expect to know anything for the assignment or labs. It's always very cryptic so you need clarification on a lot of things. I email yesterday and I get nothing but radio silence until I attend class the next day and he says "I saw your email but I don't like answering emails. I like to answer questions in class". (he didn't)
Sunil's teaching style is a mixed bag - engaging lectures but tough exams. Leaning on resources like Unstuck study and the textbook is key to surviving this class. Not for the faint of heart, but can be rewarding if you put in the work.
Best prof. He was supportive and easily accessible when needed. He provided very clear pathways for learning. He provided additional materials to understand class material FREE of charge. He is VERY lenient and puts the students best interest before anything else(he will give extra marks for participating in class or if you go to his office hours).
Don't take him, quizzes and midterms and final are very hard. Average of the classes were pretty low and I didn't like his teaching style, also, he doesn't post notes nor practice exercices. Don't recommend
MAKE SURE YOU SHOW UP AND TAKE CLEAR NOTES! Doesn't use notes and just writes on the whiteboard. Sunil is nice enough and is available to help (sometimes won't respond to emails tho) but quizzes/tests can be confusing. If you've taken Math 31, you will do well, if not you might struggle. Frustrating class sometimes
As someone who took calculus in high school, I found Sunil's teaching to be great for my skill level. He simplified complex topics and would give hints about what was going to be on the quizzes. It's very important to attend lectures (or get notes from a friend) since none of the notes are online and all his work is done on the whiteboard.
I highly advise against taking Sunil as your professor. He's an all around unpleasant fella, he doesn't respond to emails, he has a condescending tone when he speaks to you. He puts questions that we've never covered in class in the final. He goes on power trips every class and tries to assert dominance in the classroom.
There are definitely better options for math114 barely responds to emails and his practice questions NEVER reflect what's on the exams. If you didn't take math 31 in highschool consider yourself cooked if your with him. Uses sarcasm as a tool to humiliate students for inoffensive simple questions. I get he tries to be funny but it gets to a point.
I didn't take math 31 but that's beside the point. He is nice/caring when you go to his office hours but his midterm/final for MATH 114 was SO HARD. He posted practice exams and they were WAY EASIER than the actual exam. He tests you like you are doing a PhD or something. I do not recommend him so don't let your GPA suffer!!
His final exams are extremely tough, you need to listen to what he says in his class to do well, you will not do well in his class if you don't attend every lecture - he also doesn't post notes online. He does try to help you succeed the most, but this doesn't mean he makes the class easy. Don't take if you are expecting an easy math class.
You need to go to class if you want to do well. He gives a very clear breakdown of exams, and the questions are similar to examples from lectures or the textbook. He explains concepts well. His only downfall is that he's unreachable by email; he just won't respond. Other than that he's a great prof and I definitely recommend him.
AVOID AT ALL COST
HONESTLY JUST AVOID THIS GUY HE IS THE WORST FR
very fair assessments, but if you skip class you won't do well. He gives away hints for quizzes, midterm, and final. For the quizzes though you have to be efficient as you only 30 minutes. If you took math 31 before you will be perfectly fine. Do the textbook questions and you'll do well on assessments.
Won't help much if you ask a question, he expects you to understand it even though you are literally asking for help. Very passive aggressive towards students. as practice questions up but not the key, will tell you to do all the questions and come to office hours to receive the key which you can only check while you're there. Avoid at all costs!
I liked him. You won't pass if you don't go to the lectures. Study by redoing every example he does in-class and know how to do them yourself. He was funny and the lectures were slow-paced enough that there's tons of time to digest information. Explains concepts very clearly. Go to class and take notes and you'll be fine. No textbook needed.
Wasn't caring at all . Looked very strict . Doesn't reply to emails easily
Just do urself a favour and don't take his class, doesn't respond to emails, doesn't help u if u ask questions and literally takes it personal if u skip class and will pick on u. Makes u feel so bad for asking questions. Like sir THIS IS UR JOB
Please ignore the good reviews from the students who are simply good at math and could teach themselves. If math isn't your strong suit then just avoid this guy. I don't know how he's still employed.
I don't know how he has a job. He definitely hates being a prof. and will purposefully delete stuff from Meskenas because he is "mad at students who didn't attend lecture." petty af. He teaches like you've already got a PhD in what he's talking about.
AVOID THIS PROF IF YOU CAN. He is terrible, during his lectures, he doesn't actually teach - he assumes that you've already learned the material. Students have attempted to ask questions during his office hours and he just tells them to look online and that everything is in his lectures. He refuses to help students who don't understand.
He as a prof is ok, I'm not going to say he is the best math teacher I had, but one thing he really doesn't answer your questions, he'll say check the course outline
From all of the math teachers I have ever met, he is actually one of the nicest profs I have ever met. As long as you have learned the material in the course, you will get a good grasp of the concepts he teaches. If you are ever struggling or confused with what he teaches, he will do everything he can to help you understand what was taught.
He is super rude and mean to his students. God forbid you ask him a question he will completely unleash hell on you.passive aggressive. Unhelpful. I emailed him asking questions (and so did other classmates). No response after 20 days. Take Robert instead.
If there's literally ANY other prof available. Take them instead.
One of the worst profs ive ever taken, if your in the class start praying. He does not have notes for his class he just writes things from his mind onto the board and most of the time you can't even read what he wrote. Sometimes i think he wants you to fail the class because he assumes you know everything about calculus so he barely teaches you.
Very passive-aggressive, expects you to know everything, will do the most advanced stuff and say it's "just for fun" to mess with us, midterm and final were insanely difficult and not to finish within a reasonable time
Hes very clear about whats on quizzes and tests and doesnt put extra stuff we didnt learn on them. Throws bonus marks in if you answer questions and on tests. His tests are not that difficult, however if you miss class then pray because he doesnt post notes other than review material and he doesnt have any premade notes, its a “as you go” process.
He made us write a midterm on Halloween night. Since it was an online asynchronous class, it was challenging to understand calculus, and he didn't provide much help. It is best if you don't take the online class with him at least.
Terrible prof. I still have nightmares about this class
DO NOT TAKE HIM he is the worst with questions (he refuses to answer & tells u to ask somebody else), no notes you can refer to you theyre all done in class, quizzes are fairly easy 4x10% but the final was SO long and not completable in the time given. hes very very rude and very much wants us all to fail. if ur not a calc wizard you will fail
I was honestly shocked to see that he isn't rated higher. I've had him for 3 math classes now, and he's one of the best teachers I've ever had! Almost considered changing my major to math to take more classes with him.
Final was very difficult, and quizzes and tests are based on lectures (which you cannot understand). Very rude and unprofessional.
His class is enjoyable if you understand math easily. The final and midterm had questions that were way harder than the ones he goes through in class. I liked that he gave hints for his quizzes/tests during class. If you miss class its ggs for you, doesn't post notes.
worst prof I've ever had in math. Made me hate the class. lectures are not at all helpful, practice exams are not at all reflective of the real exam, which makes it hard to study. It's as if he tried his best to teach this class while simultaneously while doing the least amount of work possible. Takes too long to respond to emails. Refuses to help
I took the online asynchronous class. He made the final exam on topics that weren't even covered in the assignments and practice final exam. He's also very rude and unhelpful. A little bit creepy (just get bad vibes from him) too.
I took the online asynchronous class. He made the final exam on topics that weren't even covered on the practice assignments and final exam (which was all the meskanas material) and was infuriatingly unhelpful when asked about it. He also gives off weird vibes.
Challenging class with heavy work and no communication, Difficult material; lectures often rushed, requiring extra self-study Outline changed weeks before final increasing difficulty Tough exams; some succeeded with effort, many struggled Needs lots of independent work and strict grading. Good if strong in math and self-teaching; expect steep curve
