Very good Prof
his class is a waste of time
Stay Away From!
The man hasn't got a clue! Tenure should be thrown out the window!
this man answered an ambigious exam question with the wrong answer - the irony!
Very easy to take notes from - great prof
I only had him for Econ 104 which is a pretty easy class, but I liked him.
good notes but hard exams
No Comments
Monotone lectures make you fall asleep
He really tries and makes it clear for you, even though his test are super hard!
wears the same scarf everyday and talks like dr. evil
midterms are starting to get hard!
knows his stuff very well but it would be nice if he was a bit more friendly
Totally clear, and tries to help in class, hard exams he thinks are easy
Course in general not easy, but instructor helps a lot! Clear and Concise.
Good prof. Sunil made everyting pretty clear. Talks like Dr. Evil
I'll bet he throws a mean spinkick.
one of the best profs i've ever, very clear, makes sure everyone gets it
He is great!!! He looks like mario! with a red hat, (wonder where luigi is~~~)
pretty sedate but nice, well organized and relevant
Very helpful and gives really good examples in class
Great prof, knows his stuff. Always folds his jacket into thirds (inside out)
clear, talks really slowly, really hard midterms
He was one of the best teachers I've ever had. He explains things well and actually cares if you understand.
people said is easy course, but actually is not... is hell boring and the marking is extremely unfair... Poor teacher.... un clear and just kick my ass......
Overall course wasn't too bad but his midterms aren't that easy. Many of us got totally killed on the first midterm and got kicked around a bit for the second midterm.
It is worthwhile going to class - even though it's broing, it is very helpful, unlike the text. He has high standards though... so work hard, or he'll make you feel like ****.
Awesome for that course, but the course itself is easy and awesome too. OK in the Econs, I'm sure there's worse.
Midterms ARE CRAZY. final is okay... let the TA teach, she is even better. willing to help though...
One of the best prof's Ive ever had.
Excellent
Only there to collect a paycheque. Flips through pages of textbook during class, refuses to help outside of class. Works to rule. Would say he's a bad marker, but he's apparently too important to do ANY marking himself.
Good prof. Really knows his stuff. Not really available outside of class but good at lecturing.
Blurry content, not helpful outside class time, moody, no concern for the students, lazy (don't do any marking, only avliable in class) Better off reading text book then going to lect
I don't know about his other courses, but the difficulty of his econ 103 midterms surprised the hell out of me.
Straight fwd from the book
Boring, very very slow, and just a plain annoying voice. Went to class 3 times all year and got an A+. Trust me, the econ 103 textbook (and especially the study guide) is more than adequate preparation for exams.
Can you say BORING! Makes me fall asleep in his class everytime1
he is a good looking man,a tiny bit boring, if your looking for help its not here, go to the red lion otherwise.
Only there to collect a paycheque. Flips through pages of textbook during class, refuses to help outside of class. Would say he's a bad marker, but he's apparently too important to do ANY marking himself. Wont even smile at you in passing outside class.
LAZY. Will go out of his way to NOT help you. Unclear about what he expects on tests, and the tests are inordinately hard compared to the material in the text and lecture. Grumpy and moody. Did I say unhelpful and lazy?
Every-1 F'd or barely passed 1st midterm, he loves calculation questions on his tests and expects answers like 0.47 (allowing no calculators). 2nd midterm and written part final were easier. Lectures VERY thourough. Questions out of study giude.
my best prof so far. if u actually listen he knows his stuff. if u pay attention in class and study from the text (very good) an A is attainable. the first midterm is hard; know how to APPLY the material and draw graphs. if u see him 1 on 1 he's helpful.
An amazing lecturer; knows material inside out and encourages students to ask questions until understood. His exams on the other hand are extrememly difficult (out of 200 students only 2 completed the first midterm) and class average was below 50%.
Lectures are fairly interesting. ECON 100 is supposed to be an easy course and it was.. until the exam. good luck
Perhaps he has a large chip on his shoulder?! He seemed okay..however when it came time to ask any questions, he was very rude and spat out sarcastic remarks; he takes out problems on students?! My first Econ class & w/him it was a bad experience!
Sunil definitely knows what he's talking about - but he shouldn't be a teacher. He does not provide help during our outside of class, rather, he tells you to visit T.A.'s. His printing is hard to read and his accent makes his speech difficult to understan
Unbelievably lazy, dull, and unhelpful. The last midterm was completely unfair. He hung our poor TA out to dry to deal with our complaints about his test. Once when a student asked a question he said: "it's not my problem that you don't know that.&qu
A good lecturer indeed...makes Econ104 an interesting course...easy midterms brought me even more interests on economics...!
Lectures extremely boring. Moody and not very helpful. Don't get behind before exams, it will cost you big time. Exams are difficult unless you know the material inside out. Don't screw up on the 40% one like I did. Don't get an old edition of the txtbook
He was good. Really easy to understand his lectures and to the point. Tests weren't terribly HARD. I got a B+ and an A-. Im not gonna complain.
Neil is the****, knows what he is talking about, and great sense of humour, though he definitely plays favourites, good idea to suck up to him, especially in office hours, also know your Econ facts, read the Economist, he will love you!
EXCELLENT professor. He made difficult material very clear and practical.
One of the best profs Ive ever had
He makes the material easy to understand, and is very straight forward in his explanations. He uses lots of practical examples to keep things interesting.
He definitely knows what he's talking to - make SURE you attend all the classes. He's straight forward and tries hard to make things clear. He can be a little boring now and again, but he also has some interesting current events that he includes for some up to date examples.
Kaplash is very good at explaining concepts clearly and slowly. He finds good real world examples to show these concepts. I would definately take another course with him.
not very clear what he says all the time. finance section's a b*tch. tries to be helpful but he doesnt go for that extra mile.
Very good professor. Explains everything slowly and clearly and uses a lot of real world examples to help students understand concepts better. Definitely recommended.
Awesome prof. His lectures are very well organized. Take good notes and you'll find his courses a breeze. Be sure to pay attention and attend ALL his lectures! He's always slipping little important things here and there that might appear on the midterm or final. Good luck!
Really easy class if you do the work and/or attend class (don't do both - it gets really boring). Predictable midterms and finals - organized, relaxed lectures - but don't ask hyim quyestions after class - he gets upset. Also, be prepared for teh profwho comes 10 minutes late and leaves 20 min early
Good prof. He realizes that he is talking to people who are just beginning to learn economics, so he is very clear and doesn't confuse you with too much info that's not in the text.
Best Prof on campus!!! He is simply an amazing teacher!
This is one of my favorite prof's, At first he seems a bit weird, but if you go to his classes the course is easy, he is very clear, as long as you dont talk in class you will be fine.
Excellent prof in terms of explaining, lecturing and answering questions in class. Loves it when students ask questions, and he answers them well! Always! I also love him because he does not tolerate chitchatters, and puts them in the spot whenever they do to shut them up. I could not ask for a better prof, ever. Reminds me of Inspector Clouseau :)
Very smart. Kinda bitter. But explains things clearly. Study for the tests. Perfectly adequate prof if you do your work.
Awesome Prof! Explains everything very clearly and uses a lot of real world applications. He encourages questions in class and wants students to actually learn the material very well for midterms and final. Definitely recommended.
very helpful prof. the reason i'm an econ major
great teacher
Obviously manipulating rating for this guy by flooding with good commentws - go through the history and see the truth. If you're not free during his one hour a week, expect no help. Doesn't mark, doesn't meet otuside of class, doesn't let you email him, pretty much does nothing except lecture and compalin about how busy he is to other profs here.
Man, what a joke. He isn't obviously interested in helping students, thats what the class Average was so low. I learn more from my TA than I do him. Spends two days on one topic, two weeks on another. Whats on the midterm? you guessed it, the material he glanced over. Learn to teach buddy.
maybe he is not the best prof. but he is not bad at all.you can learn so much from him.
Ok, firt let me say that his teaching style is unbelievable. Everything he says is incredibly clear and easy to absorb and understand. He is extremely open to answering questions during class. The only bad thing about the class was that the midterms were nigh impossible...study your arse off.
well, he is awesome coz everything he made is just so clear and so smooth.just one thing, he never talk about his life nor anything about himself. there;s a intersting one, he even say "hello" to one one day on my way school. i am the guy who always sit in the 1st row and in the middle.
Very straight forward prof, knows his****, doesnt confuse students. Mid terms are straight out of class notes, nothing surprising. Would highly recommend him
Cook prof. Cool TA. His teaching is really clear to me. However, we took tests that had questions not related to lectures. The average for summer class is definitly low.
Clear, direct, and to the point. He breaks things down to the simple basics for you to understand. He is very knowledgable, and wants his students to do well.
He, personally, knows his stuff. good teacher, clear. But his class, on the other hand has extremely unrelated test material. Class avg. was 52% and he still debated curving it up. TAs really suck, and exams are terribly hard. No one got higher than a 75% in class
Very good teacher. Explains everything very directly and to the point. The tests were ridiculous, as they were filled with unclear questions. The class avg was around 50%. ECON really isn't that hard of a subject but the tests made it extremely difficult.
great teacher, knows his stuff, funny. recommended
Very Knowledgable.
First off, this guy has style! His teaching ability is only surpassed by his fashion sense. To do well on the mid terms, study the study guide questions not the text book itself. tests are quite tough
Mr. Sunil Kaplash is an extremely knowledgeable lecturer. He knows his facts extensively and doesn't resort to bs-ing. I studied Commerce 100 in his class and evaluation (4 tests, no exams) was very fair. Prior to each test, he reminds us everything we need to know for the upcoming test. Other than that, Sunil needs to "check e-mail." RECOMMENDED!
At first I thought he was fine, knew what he was talking about....however it turns out it was a waste of time, exams seemed unrelated to the material covered. ta's werent much help either, class average on first midterm was 42%. Get another prof if you want to do well in econ104
Prof. Kaplash is very good in class as others have commented. BUT trouble is that he is NOT open to questions or concerns about marking or how the exams are done. He is always in a hurry. The ta's failed him for the first midterm and he did not respond well to a lot of concern by students. Make sure you do not miss a class before the first midterm!
Doesnt look over his exams for mistakes
he is good. take his class
Kaplash mite be the most '****' teacher you will ever come across. He has the sweetest red french hat and scarf combo.. and he gets real mad at people if they are texting or talking in class. Make sure to take notes about what he is talking about rather than what he writes on the board because he barely writes anything.
Very good lectures. Makes sure each student fully understands the concepts before moving on. Midterms tend to be filled with mistakes. Midterm #1 was relatively easy (avg ~78%). Midterm #2 was brutal, avg was about ~46-50% and he DID NOT scale it. That cost me my A+ and many other students dropped 1 or 2 letter grades. Final was relatively easy.
Classes were easy to understand and he made concepts clear. However, midterms and the final were very hard. One of the midterms even resulted in an average grade of about 46% (fail)... this exam was NOT scaled. This caused many people's grades to fall significantly. My advice is to TAKE SOMEONE ELSE'S CLASS!!!
he is easy to listen to in the lectures, however the lectures seemed unrealated to the tests...first midterm wasn't bad...second midterm over 40% of the class failed and it was NOT scaled...he didn't seem to care about how upset the students were..
Midterms and exam are conpletely different to in class material covered. doesnt even write his own tests, or mark them. doesnt believe in scaling when extremely necessary. writes on his syllabus, "Do not email me". if i had just read the text rather than going to all classes, i would have gotten a better mark
He is a great teacher, but you don't need to attend class to understand what is going on.
Today he exploded at some kid for not putting hiss hand up, definitely think far less of him now.
wow. YAY FOR 1000000 GRAPHS AND ABSOLUTELY NO CONCEPTUAL LEARNING BECAUSE THIS PROF IS NOOB
Hmm...the second midterm was pretty bad. I got 60%, about 29% lower than my mark for the first midterm. The problem wasn't so much that the material was harder, but the questions in the exam were laid out differently than how they were in the assigned text and study guide questions. LAME
To get the most out of lecture: (1) Pre-read material to be covered in lecture. (2) Bring text to class so you can follow along (v. important for his teaching style - is them most important thing to do IMO!).(3) Most of the time, don't bother drawing graphs. Focus and take notes on what he says - use study guide if you need practice questions.
Fairly interesting lectures but can gain same knowledge from textbook if necessary. Didn't mark or grade the tests so knowledge from class is less important than knowledge from labs.
The first midterm is fair, the second midterm is very hard, and many students failed the second midterm. But the final is fair. Do the study guide questions before the exams. He seems like a nice guy, but the second midterm is hard.
He missed alot of classes, but to be fair, it was because of reasonable situations. Don't really need to attend to pass. Reading the text is a huge part. Uses real world examples which helps. Not a bad teacher, but not the most helpful
Kaplash was inaudible, he had a strong accent and was hard to understand. He drew pointless diagrams on the board without explaining them. The class was pointless, however you can get by alright with the textbook.
I mean, if you want a Prof who gives decent lectures that are useful but doesnt show up to midterms/finals and does not have office hours or email take this class! Most unhelpful prof I ever had, doesnt care if his students do bad and doesnot hesitate to move kids around, which seems a bit odd to me. Wasted a lot of time fooling with his microphone
took an econ class with this prof in my first year and dropped it after the first time I approached him for help. I told him I was having difficulty grasping the course material and his response to me was something like..maybe you should reconsider being here. Then he turned his attention to another student with a big plastic smile on his face. I d
Adorable guy, reminds you of Watson from Sherlock Holmes. Hard class though - he goes too fast sometimes. Doesn't prepare you for exams well.
I dreaded coming to class and having him scribble stuff on the blackboard. His diagrams were messy and his teaching was poor.He did not go over the midterms. The questions on the test rarely had anything to do with what we did in class. In the last week of classes someone said that there was a mistake on the midterm - his was response was "Too bad."
Kaplash was a terrible teacher, didnt know what he was saying and made alot of mistakes. He didnt show up to class for a week and didnt tell any of us, he was sick but he should have had a TA fill in. Class was pointless, didnt learn anything. Midterm 1 was ok. Number 2 and the final extremely hard. If you are at UVIC take econ with Rutherford !!
Professor extremely competent. But very theory based. Not for slow or incompetent at theory. Diagrams clear and useful. Be prepared to use textbook as supplemental guide. Again, this professor teaches very quickly but you need to think fast and comprehend your theory. Second mid-term difficult. Final is reasonable. Good luck.
Five tests and no final exam which was nice, but have to do well on all five tests to get a good mark because that's all your final mark is based on. You can't email him and don't be late for class either. Interesting stories and interesting material but study lots!
Disinterested in majority of students, save his favorites. Doesn't miss a chance to tell students he's not responsible for them understanding basic concepts and don't even think about asking him for help.
Truthfully, the Professor doesn't care about most of his students, but he really likes those who engage in his class and catch on quickly. Despite his apathy to most students, Kaplash was quite good at teaching the subject matter, and related the course content to day to day economic news, which was a great help. Tests are average in difficulty.
