One crazy guy. YOU YELLOW SHIRT STOP TALKING GET OUT NOW!!
Hard course because of the lack of preparation, but one crazy prof.!! He gets more amusing as time goes on. IF you can do the homework, you'll ace the tests.
Boy, he is sad. Lighten up, man! Don't take yourself so seriously.
Wow, I can't even remember how many times this guy spazed out during class.
Funny as hell when he tells some of his stories, and when he spazes out on people. Hard class if you don't do the homework.
The guy can't teach. He's smart and can theorize but his style of teaching is: Throw everything at you at rapid fire speed and hope some of it sticks. The one saving grace is the cheat sheet he allows you to bring to tests.
the guy is hilarious, and i think that is the only reason that i attend lecture. oh, and his "surprise quizzes", which is a guaranteed 10/10 if you go. hard class, hard exams, good luck.
First day of class he said: This will be the hardest class you ever take. He was right. Hard tests, hard quizzes, hard homework. Horrible text. Be prepared to stare at problems for over one hour. If the goal of this class is to weed people out of engineering while making you laugh, it works.
The exams are hard..but it is easy to get mark on the homework assignment and quiz.
Crazy guy who goes on about absolutely nothing for atleast 15 min.
Do not have to take PHY 107 unless you have to Sen is not a great professor for a intro class, he is smart. The book sucks becuase it is too simple of a reading, and too hard hw questions it does not prep for the tests. If you took AP PHy or are a major you will get an A, otherwise, you will suffer
absolutely no real help
This guy SUCKS! He doesn't teach us anything in lecture, you can't understand his stupid voice, and overall he is the least helpful person in the world. DO NOT take his course - he is a waste of your time.
Can be quite good on days ... His tests are fair, quizzes are a give away.
The guy is brilliant. Challenges you. Funny as hell often.
This guy goes off on tangents, sometimes teaches material you do not need. He thinks he's funny when he makes jokes, but the class is really laughing at him, not with him. He may be a master of the material, but his teaching methods are horrible. Taking this class now, taking it again next semester.
Sen is ok. His tests are hard sometimes.
Dr sen knows physics well. But he expects a lot. He is very approachable and helpful though - but you need to go to him one on one. The phy101arc section sucks. students are not intrested in the subject. they just want to pass. Regular clas would be better.
He sure is smart. Knows his stuff well. He can be tough sometimes but that's part of the game. I find him helpful. Tests can be hard but then we need to work hard too! He can be quite a riot and make us laugh. I quite like that actually. Wish more teachers would bring humor to classes!
he is a good professor, in the beginning it was tough but if you do the hw problems and attend rec. this course is not a problem, it is not an easy A, you have to just earn it.
He provokes you to try harder. I respect the guy. He knows his stuff and expects students to be serious about the course. I have learnt a lot from his class and would take him again
Good guy, he knows his stuff. He can be difficult if you're not a math or science person, but is always willing to help outside of class. Funny guy usually, but is serious when he has to be. Good curve.
He is the worst PHY teacher in the history of UB. PHY 101 was awful. He doesn't explain anything, his lectures are EXTREMELY DISORGANIZED, and I can't understand him because he goes off on too many tangents. He blows.
He appears smart, but I can't understand y he chose a profession he hates. Is this a way to live a life? I don't know what he did to get the comments listed here. I wonder why his total averages are much lower than from the entries I see here. I have to agree, STRONGLY, with his total averages, which are very POOR and ACCURATE.
Dr. Sen expects a lot from his students. He looks disappointed most times. If only he would realize (probably does) that many of us are doing the course because we have to do it... I don't see myself a physics major. I like the guy. It is tough teaching disinterested students.... I wouldn't want to be in his shoes!!

Me,too, speechless! I guess it takes no time for some people to show you how useless and pathetic they are. This is going to be a long semester!
The strong side of this professor, is he knows the material and knows how to talk (thus get you interested); that bad side is, he does not use these skills, uses power point presentations (which do contain mistakes) and tend to make ppl fall asleep. Assignments are hard; exams are easy if You did the assignments.
This course is not easy at all. The professor comes to class and just reads through his slides. He never takes the effort to do examples of the problems and physics 101 is all about doing problems.
The only thing i retain from class is that he got chased by monkeys when he was 10 and he still bites his nails. Other than that he is a useless teacher.
If you have never had any Physics before, this teacher will be the death of your GPA. Sen's class is USELESS, I stopped going a month in. I NEVER skip classes. out of the 135 students in PHY 101, only about 18 try to get something from the classes. In a way, Sen is to smart (and lazy) to teach the basics. He just doesn't know how to teach it.
sucks
Very straight forward. Gets the concepts across very clearly. Exams are whicked easy compared to the online homework. He says you need to use calculus, but you don't. This class is basically the first half of Regents physics from highschool, but with torque and a brief introduction to statics. If you stay up on the work you should do very well

Not too good with lecture. He lecture about physic and then cuts in the middle of lecture and talks about meanless, useless stuff almost, most of the lecture andddddd... then continue his lecture and then.... "repeat step one again" . Lecture is bad and reads of his notes with a boring excent.
Avoid him! believe me you don't want to take this class ... it is a complete and utter waste of time and all the effort.
Awful reacher, awful man. spends 15 minutes each class on a power trip, yelling at kids for talking. He told a group of guided tourists to get out of his classroom! also useless in terms of teaching the material - not good at bringing it down to a basic level. AVOID!
Class is such a waste of time. He spends more time yelling at students for talking and tour groups for looking in on his class than teaching. His notes are completely useless and he hardly ever covers the important topics. Avoid taking him if you can!
Most seem to use this site as a dumping ground of their frustration because they are flunking the class. The fact is Sen is tough! But he explains physics better than any in this place and is more reachable for help than anyone I have ever had here. So, if you want to learn the stuff well go for him. Otherwise - stay out.
Previous ratings are probably from those who did not give it a try and flunked. Prof Sen has high expectations from students, but that doesn't mean that he wasn't helpful. His attitude towards teaching is very admirable. He makes himself available and explains materials with clarity. HW assignments, quizzes, & exams are reasonable. A+++++++++++++++
Worst professor I've ever gotten. His teaching is horrible, class average is a 40 with no curve. Expects too much from his students. Thinks he's all that. TA's cant stand him.I recommend u not to take him!
Surjait is a funny guy who tries to keep things light in a boring class. That said, his grading system is terrible. Everyday quizzes count for 50% of the total grade and missing a single class will ruin your grade(without any chance of a makeup). Our averages appear as 30%online but he continues to asure us that is the same as a B?Good guy, bad prof
Terrible teacher who assumes that everyone failing his class doesn't care. In reality, they just can't keep up with the painful material that he is throwing at a level 101 class. If you want to take physics and he is the only teacher available, take the class at another school.
Rough...plain and simple. He is a hard teacher who expects too much from his students. Classwork and homework is what is to be expected in a 300 level Physics course, not a 100 level. Tests are extremely brutal. Without a large amount of studying you will fail this course. If you have to take him, good luck. If you dont, stay far away.
As far as physics professors go, he is one of the best. He teaches purely through example problems which is the most effective way to learn. He's tough and expects 100% from students. He can be extremely harsh and brutal but at the end of the day, he knows what buttons to press to motivate his students and make them try their hardest. Got an A.
I cannot recommend this guy enough. I went in with zero interest and came out a physics minor. He is eccentric, for sure. Expects 110% and if he sees that, you're solid. His grading is subjective more than it is formulaic. If you're at a B numerically but he sees your effort, you will get an A. GREAT professor, and I hope to have him again!
The most amazing professor ever. Attendance is mandatory because he has a quiz every class, but it is EXTREMELY helpful. He explains everything very clearly and makes sure you understand the topics. His door is almost always open. One of the only professors at UB that actually care about their students and their success. AMAZING ! :)
Best professor I have had at UB. His class is difficult, but he offers extra office hours, extra classes, and any time by appointment. He makes himself completely available to students, and truly cares and wants them to succeed.Great guy, excellent professor.
Good professor, easy A,but you should workd hard.
Wow! This guy is tough! He knows how to teach, and is very helpful and kind to those who are interested in the class and show effort. But if you are a slacker, WATCH OUT, because he will call you out on it! Helpful homeworks and very clear with concepts. His tests are HARD but the curve is insane. Do your work and study to be rewarded!
okay so sen is a great person- very understanding and he is there for his students when they need help, has extra sessions BUT.. this class is difficult and VERY time consuming. HW 2x a week, attendence is mandatory cuz u have a quiz evry class which is 50% of ur grade. no calculators allowed, no cheat sheats, but i came out learning a lot.
Dr. Sen is the best at what he does. He demands a lot from his students and matches your level of commitment 100%. You come out not only learning a lot about physics but also how to be a better student.
Got an A the second time I took this class. I failed the first time because I slacked off. He is one of the best physics professor you can have in buffalo, just make sure you're on track with the lectures. Don't fall behind. The exams aren't that hard if you understand the concepts. If you need help, seek help early! DONT FALL BEHIND!
This professor may seem hard at first, but he truly cares about his students and want them to learn. He is very generous with the curve, although he won't tell you that. Tests are not too bad because calculators and cheat sheets are not allowed. He definitely knows what he's talking about. Definitely a smart fellow with funny comments occasionally.
Great coverage of topics. Very math intensive course. Works hard himself and expects the same from you. Is funny at times. Goes heavy with assignments.Teaching is very impressive, although it becomes difficult at times to take notes and listen to the interpretations simultaneously.
SO HARD. 2 homeworks due PER WEEK, in class quiz in EVERY CLASS. these quizzes are 50% of your total grade, so class is mandatory. no calculators on quizzes or tests, so you must know the concepts EXTREMELY well. the teacher demands way too much from his students, especially in a 101 class. if you fall behind for one day you are screwed. AVOID
Dr Sen is a professor that demands a lot of hard work from his students. But he also is working just as hard as you are too. He is almost always available to help and is more than willing to do so.Responds to emails quickly, open door policy, gives private cell # Tip, if you fall behind go to his office hours. I can not stress that enough.
Sen is by far one of the best professors at UB. He demands a lot of work out of his students but he rewards people who work hard. He doesn't use power point and just does problems with chalk which is very refreshing for a science course at UB. People complain about the quizzes every class but they take the pressure off of the tests.
Good teacher, moves fast and expects A LOT. Homework 2 times a week quizzes every class which weigh 50% of the grade, not good for someone who has test anxiety. He assumes if you're not doing well you're not trying. Honestly one of the scariest professors I've encountered. He's super intense for teaching a 101 course.
2 hws a week, a quiz every class, cumulative final exam. He is not the best teacher. The hws will not properly prepare you for quizzes and exams. He expects a lot out of you. It is not impossible, but it is not a first choice. Do not take this class if you are taking other hard classes.
I could understand why students may complain about him but this IS college & like every professor should, he makes you work hard which you should be doing anyways. There's a quiz every class based on previous lectures, pretty easy as long as you take good lecture notes. Gives fairly generous curves. Do the HW!! Really helps understand the material.
Most intimidating/scary professor I've ever had at UB. Expects a lot out of students and wants to see you putting in effort, otherwise will not be generous with grading. Says there is no curve but I actually thought I might have failed and ended up with an A-. Ask him for help, go to office hours, show that you're trying and he will be very nice
Don't know why he has such low ratings. He's one of my fav profs at UB. The hw DOES prepare you for the exams, as long as you understand them. Quizzes aren't difficult either, just review your notes of the previous lecture the night before and UNDERSTAND concepts, and you'll be fine. His office hours are a must and he's actually a really cool guy.
He is a professor who truly wants his student to learn. His lectures are clear and easy to understand. The professors puts in his own time and effort to help his students but he also expects his students to do the same. Make sure you study your notes and complete the HW. Many students fail due to their lack of effort in this subject.
Professor Sen is the best Professor you will ever have. He's not only brilliant, but he has easy notes to follow that he pans out in lecture for you on the board usually and not on Powerpoint slides. His lectures were specially designed by him and his original work. He recv'd a standing ovation the last day of class. Ty Prof.
He wants everyone to pass but you have to put in all of your time and energy for it while juggling other classes. Ive gone to every class, recitation and office hours by both himself and the TA's, and have done all the work yet its STILL unclear to me. It's the hardest class Ive ever taken. Take it with a different teacher or at a different school.
Dr. Sen is a very good teacher and gives detailed lectures with notes online. He has a lot of online homework which is optional, but you should try to do it so that you get good grades on the quizzes every class. You can miss the usual of 3 classes but then he will start giving you 0's for the quizzes.
He seems intimidating but if you go to his office hours he really does want you to do well and is there to help you.
Prof Sen is cares for the success of his students. Everything he teaches is done beautifully on the board. There are quizzes in every class and they really matter. The quizzes can be tough. The exams are okay but the final was comprehensive and quite tough. Getting an A is not too hard but you need to make sure you attend his office hours for help.
Tough course but he teaches you how to understand the stuff and solve problems. Extremely helpful, in the end gives good grades too.
SUPER helpful in office hours. Do the online homework (even if it's only 10% of your grade) and you'll be fine. Tests are curved fairly. Incredibly sassy and hilarious, and at the same time he legitimately cares about his students.
Very nice professor. You can tell he tried to make joke at class. Would take him again. Go to class and do study for quiz everyday then you will get a A. Not even B
AWESOME TEACHER! HE IS CLEAR AND HELPFUL AND REALLY WANTS HIS STUDENTS TO DO WELL. MAKE SURE YOU REVIEW YOUR NOTES AND DEFINITELY GO TO CLASS. HE HAS QUIZZES EVERY CLASS BUT DON'T FEEL INTIMIDATED ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS REVIEW AND DO THE ONLINE HW. CAN'T SAY IT IS AN EASY A, YOU NEED TO WORK IN THIS CLASS (but that is all physics classes).
His class is not too difficult, but definitely not the easiest class. Quizzes in every lecture, which are not bad & you need to go over his notes for those. Exams aren't horrible. He likes to give extra credit on the quizzes which does help with your overall grade. He's not a bad prof if you talk to him
To do well in this class you NEED to study your notes rigorously and re-work problems in homework and the practice problems he does in class. The quizzes are a HUGE part of your grade so go over your notes multiple times before the class and you'll succeed in this class. He gives a grade you deserves, so be consistent and show effort.
Professor Sen is fantastic, especially for a prerequisite course like PHY101. He cares about his students and periodically asks students about their thoughts on the course and what can be done to improve. You HAVE to study for this course and the weekly quizzes seem like a lot, but if you keep up with them you'll be fine
No recording for lecture, only chalk talk. If you want to pass the course with a good grade, you have to complete all the homework and not to miss any quizzes. And quiz grades count as 50% of the total grade.
Gives a lot of quizzes, no quiz if you are late.
HORRIBLE course! I wish I can get a chance to resign it. Don't take it!
Good professor, good teaching, tough course, needed to work awfully hard, but it's worth it. recommended!
Professor Sen does his job very well. There is a quiz every class. If the class quiz average is low he starts offering extra credit on the quizzes later in the semester. Will do a lot to make sure his students get the best grade they can. Do hw and rewatch lecture recordings before quizzes. Test problems are from the HW and lecture. Fair grader.
I love professor sen. He is so so passionate about students and really does care about his students. I hated physics prior coming to class and came out loving it. Unlike the other professors, sen actually teaches instead of reading off slides. There are quizzes each week which are pretty east if you study. The exams are based off lectures and hw
Dr. Sen is an amazing physic's professor. He cares deeply about when you finish his class you have a solid understanding about physic. Every week there's a quiz. If the class quiz average isn't high he will start giving out massive extra points towards the end of the semester. Be prepared to come to class every day.
He is rude and condescending. He gives quizzes every week class that make up 40% of your grade. Theres no partial credit and there are only two questions easy to lose all your points. He is the only physics professor who doesnt allow the use of formula sheets or use mastering physics. He is unclear in class and is rude to the students.
He makes you work awfully hard but he is reasonable, caring and helpful. His lectures are great. Tests are hard sometimes.
Students should use the online textbook more often. It gives you the steps to solving problems a lot clearer than class lectures. Pro. Sen's forceful attitude may intimidate students with questions, therefore, I recommend asking TA for assistance instead. I do not recommend this class unless you're desperate. There are easier identical classes.
Awesome guy, easy class if you try and watch lectures and stuff.
Sen is arrogant is condescending. He should not even teach this course. He does not allow formula sheets or uses Mastering, unlike others. I would prefer Dr. Gambrel anytime over him.
Professor Sen is very smart in his field, however, he is not very approachable, even though he claims he is. His TA's were great though and really helped during recitation. I've heard though that he is better than a lot of the other teachers at UB. Also, even though the everyday quizzes were annoying, they were helpful.
A bit too strict but overall a great guy to learn physics from. His quizzes are a pain but they help you get set for MCAT and stuff. He is quite accessible for a big researcher. He comes off as tough but is a softie.
Do not take class with Sen if you value your money, time, and GPA. Sen is only professor that does not allow calculators or cheat sheets even though everyone requires calculator to solve complex math. He does not graded homework, but made it mandatory for quizzes. Once again his class if do not want to ruin your GPA.
visited during office hours and was rude, not helpful at all
Sen is tough but not rude or condescending. He tells you the way it is, dont expect sugar coating. He has no patience for being nice and polite because kids are too fragile. That said, the man teaches to the point, gives a whole boat load of quizzes in every class and gives fair exams - not sure what the whining here is about.
