Great prof, lots of examples, extremely fair tests, very helpful, great sense of humour to keep students interested during classes.
Excellent teacher --interesting, engaging, fair, passionate --shows genuine interest in your success and works with you to ensure it. Dr Phansalker is nothing short of outstanding.

He is a great professor and gentleman. He has full knowledge. He is fair.I enjoy being in his class. His notes are organized. I caanot say anything more than he is a great great great great professor.
He is a great professor if you have a statistical mind. He made the class interesting, and is funny - but he did not explain even the most basic concepts clearly. His notes are nothing but notation, with very little explantion on anything. I hope I don't get him for 2304.
the prof is enough responsible to his work, but talks too much-till the last minute of the lecture.
excellent prof, knows his stats really well. Notes are organized and a lot better from the text. Assignments are fair (so long that you actually goto class and take notes) midterms are challenging so you gotta do ur work! All in all. an A+ stats prof. Like the way he dresses! (back in the 60s and 70s!!)
I never thought this class would be so easy but thanks to him it was. He re-used assignments and midterms from previous years, making our life much easier. However, his lectures are very useless, I would completely skip those if i had to re-do the class.
He is very friendly, clear, well spoken, approachable. Of all the stats profs, you better hope you end up in his section. He prepares you for exams, especially using the assignments. If, for whatever reason, you hate stats then this man will help you get through it alive.
one of BEST profs in OU,very nice person, very clear lectures. I didn't look up the textbook at all but only lectures, and got A
excellent professor, made the course very easy to understand. Best stats prof for sure. If you pay attention in class and take notes it will all make sense and you will do well on the final. warning: a 3 hour lecture will really be 3 hours with phansalker
HAHAHAHAH LOLLLLLLLLLLL! man this dude is awesomeeeeeeeee! "Well therefore please noctice", "son of a gun", "well you'll see that..therefore". loved his teaching style. He makes stats fun. But he is totally laided back. doesnt read his emails that much but is willing to help students who make an effort
Absolutely useless teacher, horrible grader. Homeworks take a long time and you don't have a sens of accomplishment when it's over. If you have a basic understanding of stats, this class is brutal. He's a run on sentence. His favorite words/phrases: As you can notice, In fact, This is not important BUT...(shows you it anyway) My advice: AVOID!
one of the worst prof i ever had, makes stats boring and harder with his confusing formulas. It is much easier to understand from the textbook. Don't ever take stats with this guy.
NEVER TAKE STATS WITH THIS PROF. He is unfair to students, makes two versions of midterm, one easier one harder. That's complete nonsense.
you will regret
He's organized, but uses different notations which gets confusing.
This prof is super helpful. You can tell he really knows the subject matter and wants his students to learn. He is pretty entertaining too. Use his notes to study for the course and you can ace it like I did.
Prof Phansalker is a really good teacher. He is fair and will help students who ask questions. He explains things really well and provides thorough notes so you barely even need the text book. You can tell he knows his stuff. For all those who rated his hair or fashion, they are just dumb people who are bitter that they did badly in his class.
I had this guy for stats 1 and 2. Pretty good prof, knows his stuff really well, not boring/monotone. He uses the board to teach, which is helpful for a class like stats. If you go to his lectures and take proper notes, you'll do fine, I never touched the book and got B's.
Good prof. Really nice and not that boring. Always avaiable to help if you need it. Defininately knows what he's taling about. Sometimes he goes off on a tangent and shows you proofs that you don't need, but he will tell you if you don't need them. Also if you can't handle accents then don't take his class.
Therefore, such as... Makes the slides wayyyy too complicated and mathematical. Used an AOL email address which didn't accept emails from my uottawa account. Lost my midterm which had an addition error on it so I never got the mark I deserved... He is a statistical machine and knows this stuff like no one else.
dont see whats with all the bad comments. maybe he is not so good for BDM but for stats he is a really good professor. He explains the material so good and is very clear about the material. great prof
Great prof. clearly knows exactly what his is talking about. kinda korny but w.e. He explains the material and teaches from the blackboard and then shows how to do minitab on comp. dont see whats with all the bad comments. it is proven he is good as the averages are highest for his section. great prof
He's always available for help, and his notes are helpful. Nice guy.
Professor Phansalker is a great teacher! He is always available to help students out and also posts useful notes on docdepot.
pretty tough teacher but if you do your home work and study hard an A- is achiveable
Prof. Phansalker's lectures are okay and you should be able to understand the material eventually if you attend all the classes. My biggest issue was with his notes as they are not well organized. You will do a lot of note hunting just trying to find where the right information is when doing assignments. Exams are fair but long.
Professor Phansalker is a really nice guy in person. He is there to help students. But on the other hand, his lectures are very difficult to understand, and his teaching method is tough to follow. His disfluencies also make listening to him even more difficult, considering he is teaching a very dry subject (statistics)
Very nice guy and funny, too. Can be somewhat ambiguous, especially regarding Assignment and/or exam questions. Leans on the spacebar a lot! Not the worst, nor the best.
worst ever, impossible to follow a lecture or take notes.
ABSOLUTELY NOT A GOOD TEACHER. Clearly understands the concepts but is of no help to the students, does not care. Don't bother asking for help when it comes to additional marks because he will not help. Deff someone who is in it for the pay and not to help students succeed in their future careers.
Very helpful professor! Course requires a lot of work overall, Difficult assignments, very fair final exam. If you are struggling with some of the course materials, prepare your list of questions and go to his extra help hours, he will explain everything to you very clearly. Got A+ only using his lectures notes (didn't read a single pg of txtbk)
Do not take him for ADM3301 - lectures were unclear, mostly learned from the slides and the book.
I had him for Stats 2 - be warned. The professor's lectures are very ambiguous. However (on his office hours) he's extremely helpful and will explain very well on a one to one basis. Don't bother getting the textbook - it's a waste of time. His assignment are well made, the final is fair.
Do not take him for this class. Not clear when explaining concepts.
Terrible professor, he does not explain the concepts at all, expects you to learn everything by yourself, and goes over useless examples in class. Do not take any class with him.
His lectures are the biggest waste of time because he just talks and talks without any consideration for your understanding. If you want to be taught, pick another prof. Don't let on that he isn't explaining things well though, he will just condescend you and waste your time (even more!)
Phansalker is a nice person but his lectures are pointless. Try to work in groups for the assignments since they are pretty long. Also, go to the Sinclair review sessions before the midterm and final.
The course is not difficult if you actually do the exercises and listen in class since prof Phansalker will actually solve problems that look very similar to the ones on the assignments or exams. He can sometimes be boring and unorganized but has good stories that is good since stats can sometimes be discouraging with all its complicated formulas!!
Such a sweet man, cares SO much about the students! Never a dull moment, keeps classes moving at extremely brisk pace. Great sweater selection too.
Not great in the classroom in terms of explaining..gets sidetracked very easily and is hard to follow. However he gives very fair assignments and exams, and is always willing to help.
He therefore, as a matter of fact, says therefore, well, as a matter of fact, what you would call, well, what you would call, too much therefore, well, therefore.
Very funny and intelligent prof. He has a thick accent and sometimes gets off topic which can make him hard to follow. He always does problems by hand on the board (which is helpful in math based classes) and is readily available to help students when needed.
Speaks gibberish for an hour and a half, Notes on blackboard provide 0 help, says "so called" or "well" every other word. All in all, makes this class needlessly hard and I suggest you switch out immediately if you value your "so called" sanity
He is all over the place during lectures so it can get very confusing. He is very nice though if you need help. The lectures slides are a mess.
Rants about nothing. Gets very side tracked. Slides are a disaster. Very opinionated. Only has good problems on the board in class. If he actually only taught during the lecture it would be half an hour. If you want to keep your sanity avoid at all cost!
He is one of the worst prof in telfer. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS. His slide are garbage and all he does are bad practice question on the board which are better explained in the text book. He does not know how to speak and I contemplated killing myself in his class throughout the year. The course is not too hard and the assignments are good
Although I really didn't like him at the beginning of the year, once I taught myself a little bit of the course, I was able to follow along in class and started to enjoy it. He makes things more complicated than they should be, but overall he conveys the material effectively. I'd take another class of his
Funny guy. He'll throw out a buzzer beating hypothesis test a minute before the next class is supposed to start, so don't expect to get to your other class on time unless it's in the same building.
Very fair and nice prof. The midterms and the exam reflects everything in the textbook.
One time I counted the number of times he said "Well of course" in 2 hours... it was on average once minute. He will drive you away at the break with his of course's so be prepared to teach yourself outside of class (oh and definitely go to Sinclair's review).
Take him on a 3hour lecture block(he tends to take quite a bit of time trying to get to the point; but be aware, 3hour lecture will really be 3hour lecture with Phansalker). He's very helpful during office hours so if something is unclear, shoot him an email before you go into see him. Brutally long exams though...
Expect to hear "well of course", "well in fact", "therefore" every sentence. I'm not a math person at all but I managed to pull off a B+ without going to class and only doing past examstextbook exercises. Of course I can't condone this, but I simply couldn't put up with him every Thursday night from 7-10pm (and not a minute earlier).
Interesting guy with great hair. Teaches everything that will be tested so there are no surprises. Did not open textbook all semester and managed to get A+. This is because all Midterm and Final Material is covered in class and on assignments. Would recommend. Has interesting teaching style. Get used to him repeating "therefore", "What you call as"
His lectures are good and his expectations are clear. The midterm and the final examination will reflect everything covered in his lectures. All his notes posted online are extremely well organized. TIP - The final examination may seem LENGTHY to most. MAKE SURE you time yourself while preparing for the final exam.
Everyone says he doesn't make sense, but that's because no one listens to his examples from beginning to end, you'll be lost through his explanation if you don't hear the context of what he's doing. He also uses one example of data through 2+ classes so try not to miss any lectures, as it's pretty hard to catch up with him if you miss something
Rambles on about nothing and doesn't engage that class
Did not like having this professor. He was overall confusing and unclear about all subject matter. When it came to the midterm and final, I really struggled with understanding the material that he was teaching. Would never take a class with him again.
Do not take this professors class. I made the mistake of believing that people did not like him only because the course was difficult. This is NOT true. The course is very difficult, and I learned absolutely nothing from Phansalkers class, I had to attend David Wrights class in order to do well. It is better to graduate late then take this guy.
He's hard to listen to and hard to understand. He's basically a joke among other sections. Mike Sinclair's review was necessary. Try to get into a different section. The content itself was fairly challenging, especially if you're with Phansalker though. Assignments and exams were usually fair.
I can't believe he is a prof. You'll have to teach yourself the course unless you can withstand his awful lectures. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
You're better off reading the textbook. His lectures jump from topic to topic. He gets lost on tangents and runs out of time to explain the actual material. Everything I learnt in that class was from the textbook. One good thing though, he is available for extra help.
His teaching style can be a little confusing, he often babbles on. However, once he actually starts teaching, the examples are great, and really reflect what is on the evaluations. I didn't really read his notes or use the textbook, but found the course easy enough if you do the assignments and practice tests. Would recommend. Great hair.
Unattentive to students and does not respond to messages. Unclear in his explanations . Avoid at all cost if you want to learn or get a good grade
Avoid. Classes are twice as long as they need to be because every other phrase he uses is "well of course" or "as a matter of fact". Bad prof and doesn't clearly convey the course material.
avoid by all means. Hard grader, Tough exams. Unclear and unorganized lectures.
Suren was a great professor at University and also when he was my high school teach. Very sociable, remembers students by name years later. If you attend the lectures and do the assignments you learn quickly and can get an A. Easily one of the best.
Excellent, Excellent prof. Truly loves teaching and stats. He is amazing! Keeps your attention during class and, during his office hours he exceedingly helpful. Truly outstanding individual. If you ask him for help, he'll go out of his way to help you. Extremely kind individual, raised everybody's grade!!!
Best statistics professor I've ever had. Truly cares about students. Remember stats is not hard, but requires a lot of work outside of the classroom. This prof will welcome you in is office for extra help. I love this prof, and would love to have him in other courses along my career path. Great guy too. Shares many cool stories related to the topic
Definitely avoid! The final was absolutely brutal, and his lectures are disorganized ramblings. I learned more from the TA than from this prof
Disappointed in the university of Ottawa for letting this guy teach a 3rd year course when he was the worst stats prof for 2nd year. He cares and is a nice guy, but he doesn't know at all how to teach. He writes very confusing questions. If you go to the DGDs and pay for Sinclair's private tutoring you should be fine. He says the funniest things.
He provides not but not very good ones, the best suggestion is to get the slides from another prof. He doesn't use his slides and everything inclass is based off examples from previous lectures, without restating the question/numbers. He also gets very offtrack such as talking about how to fly a plane in different airspeeds, and how to change tires
Although his time management isn't his strength, Suren is otherwise a great and kind professor. Attend class, follow his recommendations and be involved with the assignments and you'll succeed in his class. The DGD's are not useful, as this prof does both theory and practise in-class. He will gladly answer all your questions, in or out the class.
Worst Professor in Telfer, seriously needs to articulate himself much better and also has 0 leniency. Hard to understand and extremely tough on his students. Seriously, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR STATS OR OPS, or ELSE YOU WILL HAVE TO TEACH YOURSELF!
Worst prof I've ever had. Difficult to understand and his explanations are incomprehensible. When I went to class, I retained absolutely nothing, and I found that at the end of the semester he was teaching a nearly empty lecture room. The textbook he provided is useless, and good luck trying to study off his slides!! Switch profs if possible.
Can't understand what he says. His lectures are useless and you basically have to teach yourself. I did fairly well in the course and somehow, someway he gave me a D as a final grade. After a long process of understanding how I received this grade since the lowest mark I received in the course was a 70, he raised my grade to a B+. Awful prof. Avoid
The worst prof at Telfer. Had him for BA and Stats 2. Showing up to class is pointless. He goes on long tangents that have nothing to do with the course and you learn nothing. The material and slideshows he provides are unorganized and hard to understand. Be prepared to teach yourself the entire course using the internet and textbook.
i learned everything by myself the exam is difficult. if u want to get higher marks, go to another section
Get ready to teach yourself for this class. The assignments are difficult and take way longer than you would reasonably expect. The midterm is on a weekend because apparently there is so much content in this class that they don't have time to cover it all and do an exam. His slides are not useful and he talks about minitab so much
If you attend all the classes, he conveys the content pretty effectively so you barely touch the textbook. It's pretty ease if you don't miss classes, because some of the slides are useful and some are useless. The only issue I had was the assignments. They take way too long, and he put one to do during exam season! Get through them and easy B/A
Well of course, you shouldn't take his class. He is one of the worst Telfer profs and you have to teach yourself.
Get ready to learn everything yourself! The textbook is a fantastic resource to learn material, unlike the lecture slides and the lectures themselves. I understood none of his lectures as he rambles on and makes long winded jokes and spends too much time on Minitab. Go to Sinclair, work in groups on the projects, and read the textbook to succeed
Terrible prof, one of the worst profs I have had at telfer, He uses minitab way too much in class. Uses examples from previous lectures, which makes it next to impossible to figure out where he is getting numbers from. His notes are somewhat useful, but they way they are organized makes it very difficult to read. Switch to other stats profs.
