He is a horrible professor, avoid him at all costs.
Not that good of a teacher...
Not too easy, will make you work. Very fair for grading, cares more about concepts than math or answers.
takes too much pride in taking attendance. Hate him for that.
I recommend avoiding this professor at all costs. I am preparing for the final exam and can honestly say that I'm not sure what I was supposed to have learned in this course. I did not find the lectures particularly useful. There is something very wrong when the posted solution to a homework problem states “simply do the logic”.
NEVER TAKE HIS COURSE IN YOUR MASTERS PROGRAM
nothing new, same as most of IIT professors who don't care about how students do in the classes. Also, his exams were really tough, so try to avoid him.
The teacher in a nutshell: He opened the class by saying he hoped to have an atmosphere of contribution and dialogue. Not more than fifteen minutes later he says "No dialogue please, it is distracting". Avoid this professor. He Teaches word for word out of the book. Electrical Engineers, I feel sorry for you.
Kind of a jerk. If you have a borderline grade he will bump you if you have good attendance.
A wonderful professor in my opinion. He really knows his stuff and has been in the field for quite some time. If you put forth the effort and complete the work you'll receive the grade you deserve.
The first weeks, it was difficult coping with the professor. After then, things were easier to understand. He uses the text book as he teaches in class, it made him easier to follow. He can move very fast while teaching but never hesitates to slow down when asked to do so.He is a fair grader and attendance can help you. He is a fantastic professor.
One of the best teacher; follow along with his teaching in the class and you can't do lot of mistakes; Adjusts exam difficulties as per class understanding of the topic; takes regular feedback; encourages interacting with him and dislikes students discussing problems in the class. Overall great teacher!!
Just go to class, pay attention, and turn in your homework and you'll do fine. He grades really fairly on exams and since his exams are open book that is extremely helpful.
On his first exam, nobody received an A, but he still wouldn't curve. In the feedback following the exam, several students noted that answers to his questions were counterintuitive to what we did in the homework, which he did not accept as "feedback."
This professor teaches a class more or less like a routine. Its usually very bland with not much applicable examples. He only considers students' suggestions that fall in the line of what he considers to do. His exams and assignments are hard, which supports good learning of the material. Only good attendance can help your grade
hard to understand teacher, exams are hard, nothing like the homework.
Good professor, really knows his stuff, although his standards can be sometimes too high. If you go to his lectures consistently and do all the homework you will be fine. Fair grader in exams and overall. The grade you get is what you deserve, nothing more or less.
Taught computer Architecture at grad level. Very hard and very difficult to get grade.and beware his open book exams
Dr. Borkar is a tough teacher in the department no doubt. He teaches from the core and in turn expects students to work hard. He is very strict when it comes to classroom etiquette, no monkey business! He is like a hawk, how big the classroom if you cheat he will get you in a snap.
Tough prof. Does NOT like to answer individual questions. His tests have curve balls like invalid code. Do the coding assignments!
difficult prof, avoid at all costs
A big No!..He emphasizes on " critical thinking" for exams and grading. This confuses between what he really teaches and what he expects/how he grades. I strongly recommend not to take his classes if you desire good Grades for putting all your effort. Points are deducted even for nitty gritty details, very hard to explain to him.
This is "math" course. Three exam, almost homework every week. The difficulty of exams is above homework, but there is bonus point in the grade. If your math is good, you should not avoid this course.
Dr. Borkar is awesome. He's extremely clear during lecture, and his programming assignments really help you learn the concepts. When he grades exams, he looks for if you understand the concept. The specific answer doesn't necessarily matter as long as your approach is right. He provides practice problems before each exam as well. Highly recommend
He teaches very well and he speaks very clearly. However, he is pretty strict about things. He will call you out and possibly ask you to leave class if you're talking.
work hard
He is, perhaps, one of the most unreasonable, difficult, and inconsiderate professors I have ever met. Borkar's insanely heavy accent makes listening in class a struggle, if even at all possible, and his unwillingness to produce outside resources, such as lecture slides, inhibits his ability to teach well. Avoid this teacher at all costs.
He was the best professor that I ever had, I know that some people say that he is not a good professor because his test are really hard, but I believe that he earns the right of making a tough test by giving excellent classes. Besides his corrections are really helpful and he does not take points out for any little thing that you miss.
Not a good professor. If you want to learn the material you are better watch youtube videos. His exams are ridiculous and have no resemblance to the homework. He is strict and doesn't take any students opinion into consideration.
Arrogant
Run!!!!! When I told him that was I having a hard time in his class, he laughed at me. If youre unable to grasp concepts very quickly, do no take this class
Exams are brutal. Gives homework and practice problems but they don't seem to prepare you enough for exams. Even if you do all the work yourself and attempt to understand, it may not be enough because the material is hard and the exams are hard. He also doesn't curve. Good luck.
Professor Borkar is tough, however he is a great teacher. You must go to class and do the homework, if you can follow the lectures and learn the concepts(he will stress this) it is passable. 307 is one of the hardest ECE classes, however the sample exams are great, and if you can get old exams and solve them it is helpful. He is great outside of cl
Read the textbook, do your homework and ask questions in class and you are fine.
Great prof, knows what he's talking about. Clear and fair but very strict. Requires class participation. Helpful outside class. Reasonably tough homeworks, but exams are largely based on the HWs.
Took two short courses from him and had fair experience
I took this class over the summer, so this might be skewed. We used the book for homework but not much else. His lectures aren't strictly from the book but you can get the material from a book if you have a hard time. He will ask you questions in class, so stay alert and make sure you stay on top of the material. Overall he was fair.
This is a meritocracy. If you study hard, do homework, understand the concepts, and have all your questions cleared, you will get an A. If you aren't invested enough in the class, you will get a grade that relates to what you already know.
Extremely arrogant. Doesn't treat students like adults. Also doesn't seem to grasp that students are still learning, and will make you feel bad for being incorrect. You can tell he's been doing this for a while, so he doesn't want to change anything. He seems like he'd be a decent guy outside of class, though.
ridiculous exams, strong accent, boring lecture. The crazy thing is that he is the only professor who teach some class so that you can not avoid his class.
Never have I met a most ridiculously and needlessly bad professor. He doesn't grade on a curve and has totally unclear grading Criteria.
He is strict with his rule, and there's no tolerance if you have late homework. He is very patience with students, and you can even ask him to rephrase a concept or example which he has explained many times during his class.
Very harsh grader, very bad at explaining topics and overall a difficult professor. You should be paying attention in class, lest you want him to call you out in class and embarrass you. If you have to go to his office for whatever reason, make sure you talk very slowly and calmly cause he gets pissed off easily. Good luck.
Not even taking his class this semester. Just shows you how bad he is.
Dr. Borkar is a decent human being outside the sphere of academia. In class, however, he is one of the most intimidating teachers I have ever had. Borkar loves to cold call students and put them on the spot in the middle of an 80 student auditorium. I stopped going to class 4 weeks into the semester since the textbook is far more explanatory.
He is very strict. He also calls students out in class about every little thing especially if he thinks you arent paying attention. (I never understood this because we are paying for the class anyways. Its our money.) However, if you spend *a lot* of time outside of class teaching yourself the concepts, you will do well. Past exams are helpful.
He's a fantastic professor. He gives very good lectures, and a lot of the examples he goes over in lectures appear on the exams, so pay attention. He can be intimidating and he calls on students often for participation, but sit in the very front of the class if you want to avoid being called on. The exams are hard, study the homework and your notes
Worst professor I have ever had. Not a good lecturer and very hard grader, worst combination. He will help you if you go to his office but still he is very strict and is not clear about what he wants.
Worst professor ever, don't take this class or you'll most likely get a C or lower. Barely understand him and he doesn't care about your answers if they are right or now, he only cares about approach.
When doing exams you cant show too little work or too much work, and you will have to make a lot of assumptions. Exams make up 71.25% of your grade, homework is 3.75% and labs are 25%. Since Borkar does not control the lab portion since theyre mainly ran by the TAs.
He's the kind of guy who would punish you if you are 3 mins late to class. His lectures are alright, unless he skips over an important lesson, which you have to self-teach yourself. He also randomly calls on people. If you HAVE to take him then just ask him a few questions every other class and he wont pick on u to answer the questions.
Be careful if you and your friend are doing homework or any other assignments together.
Borkar isn't the nicest guy. He doesn't seem to care tons about his students success. His lectures are absolutely fantastic though. They lectures are very clear and easy to understand. Attend the lectures, take notes, do the homework and labs. If you don't pay attention in his class you won't do well.
This professor is the worst professor that I have ever had! IT IS COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS that he believes that his students are the problem when it is he who is unable to teach the class well. This professor will report you if he sees you using outside sources. I truly think his students wouldn't have to go to that extent if he would've taught bette
He is the most systematic professor I've ever met, the homeworks are worth absolutely nothing (around 3.75% of the total grade) and he requires active participation during the classes. He is excellent at teaching and easily accessible outside class. His way of grading is extremely precise and does not tolerate a single mistake. He's a fine teacher.
Exams are worth literally 80% of your grade. He will absolutely destroy you if you don't follow his solution, even if your final answer is 100% correct. He gives tons of homework, even when HWs are worth only 3.75% of your grade. He will ask for feedback, and when you give him feedback, he will retaliate and blame you for it. He is NOT nice.
Tests are almost your whole lecture grade, you have to solve problems the way he solves them or you'll get points off. Office hours are helpful and he's willing to spend time to make sure you understand concepts outside of class if you take the time to go. TAKE GOOD NOTES!! He won't post them online. Good attendance will get you extra pts @ the end
One of the worst prof I have ever had through my school years. Never will I ever take one of his classes again even if It was culinary. He is the hardest person to reach, never responded to any emails.
Does not care about any student in his class, only cares if you attend and respond correctly to his questions (randomly picks students). His accent is not awful, but combined with his boring lectures, he is impossible to pay attention to (esp. if you have ADHD). Unaccommodating, will mark you down for being 2 minutes late. Uncaring.
Very clear and systematic, high effort but you'll understand the material well if you put in the time. Don't be late to class, he doesn't like that at all, extra percentage points at the end of the semester if you have good attendance
Borkar is definitely a weed out instructor. DO THE HOMEWORK AND SHOW UP TO CLASS. I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. 3 of my friends managed to pass the class by a close margin. They did ok on the test, but the 5% percent of the homework grade, and the extra 3 percentage points from participation are what got them over the finish line.
He is fast and doesn't explain the concepts thoroughly even when he knows it is your first time learning this.
His correction is quite petty, to say the least, if we do another method or if we miss a small step he deducts about half the points, when is he going to understand that we are not in 5th grade to specify EACH AND EVERY STEP?
His lectures aren't half bad but his grading criteria are the worst. The only way to get an A is through telekinesis(reading minds) cause that's the only way you could pick out his exact solution from the other hundred possible solutions. Its either his way or no way at all
I would tell you to choose another professor but unfortunately he is the only professor. He is so demeaning and his grading the homeworks and exams are so petty. He can't teach, he doesn't know the T of teaching. The only T he knows is Torture, torturing the students that's it.
There is no passion there is no vision there is no aggression, nothing is there.
While ECE218 is certainly a weed-out class, if you pay attention to the lectures and take the initiative to understand the concepts as best you can, you will succeed in this class. Doing all the homework and following example problems in class does a good job of preparing you for exams. Content is taught with real-word application in mind.
Borkar gets a lot of negative reviews. Most of this is due to his strict attitude towards learning. He starts off the semester a bit rough around the edges but he certainly mellows out as the semester goes on. Exams are exactly like problems done in class and on the homework. His grading is very forgiving as long as you follow the method he teaches
Halfway through the semester, the lectures do not make sense half the time, as Borkar thinks everyone knows the material and skims over it. His exams are 70% of your grade, and HW is 3%. He is the only professor for 218, so you have to take him. This is definitely the weedout class for ECE. Attendance matters, and Borkar is quick to anger. Beware!!
Since there is no other professor for this class, I will just give advice on how to pass. I studied really hard for my first exam and he decided to put a question in the test that he had gone over one time in one lecture. While I agree with his goals in shaping students to understand concepts, putting that question was unfair. STUDY EVERYTHING
Terrible professor, terrible grade breakdown, terrible everything. Exams are 95% of course grade and out of 50 pts, so its nearly impossible to get an A. He's also very rude and penalizes us for inorganization in exam work yet his notes are probably the most unprofessional I've ever seen. HE'S ALSO VERY OLD FASHIONED AND DOESN'T CURVE WHATSOEVER!
Borkar gives 3% extra credit for participation. He is a generous exam grader, but you need to know the concepts. Don't refer to the textbook at all, it will hurt you. When stuck attend office hours or watch recordings on panopto. He focuses very deeply on a few problems to develop concepts, and he always offers a similar/easier version of the exam
Professor Borkar did a great job teaching this course. First time teaching after a long time (Wong usually teaches 311). Material was not too hard to understand but effort is required. Circuit analysis fundamentals are really all you need. Id recommend reviewing the material if you have some gaps or weaknesses in solving circuits.
I feel like Borkar has a bad rep at IIT but he generally is misunderstood. He is strict and all but he truly does it to help his students and it really does help you think systematically, people take him as rude for not letting them do stuff a different way but Borkar shows you how to do things easily, overall he's a great guy
There is no PASSION. There is no VISION. There is no MINDSET. There is only aggression in his classes. jokes aside, he is by far the toughest professor in IIT. Y'all wait for him to retire.
Borkar demands participation test are tough but his lectures are very good. I advice any student to watch the recordings they are very helpful. he can be a little brazen but good at teaching the material.
he is okay, but his TA nader was really bad, like petty cutting points everywhere for labs, like even the smallest things.
With professor borkar you will learn alot he does demand participation and will cold call you, but his lectures explain everything. His test are hard but he does give partial credit as long as you write something down and show you know something
He's a decent professor. He cares if you learn and is open to review sessions and has clear office hours. He has a bad reputation for being harsh which is true but its not discriminatory. If you go to the lectures and ask questions when you are confused you will be ok.
honestly his class wasn't to bad and his teaching was good and he was a fair grader, however his TA nader was really useless and couldn't even help and was so biased.
I agree with a few others that Borkar is misunderstood. He takes learning seriously and wants you to, too. Come to class, pay attention, do what he says, learn the material, try hard on labs (theyll help your grade a lot) and you will do great. I thought the material and tests were easy. My only gripe: he is petty with taking points off on tests.
Professor Borkar Is probably one of the few professors at IIT that actually teaches and cares if students learn. He demands participation, which in my opinion keeps you on your feet with the material. The circuit fundamentals you learn with Borkar are essential for all your higher up courses and in my opinion he does the best job
I wish he taught all the ECE courses because his lectures are so good, he goes over concepts many times and he actually cares that you study. For preparing for his exam go through all the examples he has done in class along with the special problem set and you should be fine
He is very misunderstood in my opinion. he explains concepts again and again, he has recorded lectures that you can view and he is very fair at grading. He pushes you to be better by actually thinking rather than just solving the book.
I took ECE 503 - 5G, I couldn't find it in the options on this portal. Plenty Assignments, makes me spend less time on the other courses. Professor is always prepared for class. Very informative. Very punctual
He was very straightforward, he would answer your questions many times and he is understanding about your situation and will act accordingly to your need. Exams were a bit challenging but if you referred his notes and the examples he does in class you should be able to do it
He is not a nice guy, but Michael Jordan wasn't a nice guy, either. Like MJ, he pushed us to be the best version of ourselves. You should take him because, unlike most professors, he actually cares that you learn and get your money's worth.
He is very knowledgeable about this subject. I enjoyed his lectures a lot.
He should consider teaching ECE 242 as well.
For his age, he is mentally very sharp and teaches really well compared to the other teachers in the ECE department. He has the energy of a 20 year old.
His lectures are awesome!
The rumors are true. Don't even try to cheat the system, take shortcuts, or hide in the back. It won't work. You WILL participate. Any form of dishonesty or unprofessionalism will be called out. Borkar is fair, engaging, and a good guy. He holds students to a higher standard than they're used to. Ask questions, show effort. He'll take care of you.
I took him for 218 and 311, and he taught those courses well; he taught us everything we needed, and even today, I still remember the concepts taught in those classes. However, for this class, I was disappointed as it felt like he was lost during lectures, and we had to self-study for the most part, which I did not expect from his class.
Awesome lectures and listening to feedback. Just study your notes for the exams
Borkar's ECE218 class requires engagement, but with the right approach - reading the textbook, attending lectures, and utilizing resources like unstuck study - you can succeed. His grading can be strict, but the material is manageable.
I really took him for granted. he is a gem of a professor if you see the other ece and cs professors here. he actually cares if you study and is very fair and is open to criticism. I really wish he taught ece courses like ece429 and ece308 because you actually learn from him. I miss attending his lectures a lot.
To be fair he may be one of the better professors at IIT... Albeit; He blames students for their lack of trying. He is super strict and is the 2nd worst professor I've had academically, the first bashed her students and called the F-ing morons. I can't understand his hand writing. RIT was decent. He seems to be dismissive and not approachable.
Make sure you attend lectures, as participation and attendance will give your grade a boost. Not only that, but he gives hints on what will be on the exam. Ensure you do the homework as it reflects the exam content. He is definitely strict, but it comes from wanting students to learn. Visit him in his office hours and participate in class!
If only he thought all the ECE classes here at IIT, we all would be better electrical engineers. He teaches really well and explains concepts really well. He and Won Jae Yi are the only professors in this university who care if their students study or not, which is a very rare quality to find in a professor.
Amazing lectures!
His lectures are good, but his office hours are more insightful, I would say. For his exams, just understand how to do the problems he solves during the lecture.
He explains things very well, exams are okayish, not the easiest, but you need to practise a lot for his exams.
I think people misunderstand him a lot. Yes, he is strict, but that's what really made us do a lot better in electrical engineering. Unlike most professors here, he actually cares that students do well.
He is having excellent knowledge
Borkar makes things stressful with his cold calls and crashouts, but he balances it with his passion for learning. It's a hard class, so ask questions; it gets confusing, and he values engagement. Do NOT show up late; he will yell at you. Practice the homework and understand the concepts. The exams will be easier with the previous material.
