Nice guy but doesn?t give useful example for exams or assignments. Lazy updating UWACE. Unclear assignment&exam questions. Terrible choice of course notes. Unorganized lectures. Always at the office to try to help you. If you really enjoy statistics and study it mainly by yourself then you?ll think he?s a really nice prof.

I've been reading some of the lower comments and I cannot believe the ignorance. Surya is a great professor who was GIVEN terrible course notes and material to work with. If he had time to rebuild the course, it would be amazing. He's kind, helpful, intelligent... A bit of an issue with his accent (who cares). But with him, you're in great hands.

Got some accent, but he is a good and interesting prof. Assignments and tests are easy.

One of the best profs I have ever had in Statistics. Really try his best to make this class interesting. The midterm is fair. The assignments are very useful and prepare you for the final project. Overall, an excellent prof!!

Awesome teaching and tries his very best to make students understand the materials. Yet his notes are unorganized due to the limited space on the black board. Insufficient examples that made assignments a little difficult plus you don't know what questions to expect on exams. Anyway assignments and midterms are fairly easy to score.

AWESOME prof! Made stats EASY to understand, funny (cause of his accent and querky catchphrases). Hes also super nice if you ask him for help outside of class. Best!

Entertaining, interesting prof. Made lectures worth attending. Course flow didn't follow the course notes very well but if you attend office hours, he makes everything crystal clear. If you do the assignments and watch the lectures, you'll be fine with him.

Started attending this class after I realized Cyntha Struthers class was more about her treating students like crap instead of teaching students mathematics. Very impressed, wish I could have attended from day 1. All of a sudden I don't feel like crap anymore, but I guess that's a given when you're no longer attending Cyntha Struthers class.

Possibly the only prof that made stat, a boring subject, interesting. Cares about his student, extensions are given when needed. Always have office hours. Great prof overall!

i *hate* stat, but banerjee made it a lot less painless that it would've been. he has *very* good review sessions before the midterms and exam, and even wrote up review notes and posted it up! this guy is really helpful and actually cares. Course is a formula-memorizing-fest, although they do kind of make sense. Very funny and entertaining!

Laid back, with good explanations, unlike Cyntha Struthers. Very helpful outside of lectures, and usually responds within an hour to e-mails.He was the only reason I was able to finish stats. Great prof, and there's a reason everyone has good ratings of him, and poor ratings of Cyntha. Class size was a bit big though.

amazing...can't wait for him to return to UW! such a great person too, really wanted students to do well in his course. because of him, i am now considering a stat minor (possibly a major too). examples were so interesting and funny...so many great quotes from his class. could go on and on about how great he was, best prof i've ever had at UW!

This prof is honestly amazing! He makes math fun, and always keeps his students interested. He always asks if the class understands and will repeat himself a million times if you need it. He's really smart and interesting and you can get a good grade with him too! I'd recommend him to anyone!

The review session saved my behind!

Was very helpful to students and speaks very clear. I would highly recommend this prof to anyone. He also makes small jokes in class. Course notes weren't of much use, I tried reading them but ended up just using notes I took in class. Just follow the notes, seek help when you need to, and you will do just fine.

I wouldn't have fail this course if I had him first! This guy is awesome!!!!He makes statistics interesting!

Really funny prof. He knows how to make classes interesting and is also very helpful and friendly during office hours. He is also usually quick to reply to emails and is even available on skype. He sets decent midterms and final exams too. :)

He is one of the profeesor that you can get high mark from. Attending his lecture and doing his practice questions will make your studying easier. PLus, going to his office is really useful. In terms of his exam are pretty fair, no surprised; and I think if you work hard enough, getting a 90 is not hard.

Extremely helpful. Always has time for his students outside of class. Creates a great atmosphere in class. plus listens to 60s and 70s rock which is awesome

best STAT prof

The best prof till date

I took the exam at the OPD. Surya is the only professor in my university days who was thoughtful enough to drop by the disability office to check on the students. I will never forget that.

Gives organized notes and explains clearly. Makes the course extremely to understand and gives tons of example. His class is always full while other sections are not. I went to his section because he explains way better than my own section. He is also pretty funny. He takes extra effort to write summary and post review videos on Learn.

Made Stat 231 seem so enjoyable and easy. All his lectures were so fun and clear. Hands down one of the best profs in math. Hope to be in his class again!!

He is very funny and nice. It's a one hour and twenty-minutes lecture but you do not feel boring. He explaines the concepts clearly. His writing is a little bit, just a little bit hard to tell but his note is very helpful in understanding the material. If you go to his class and take note and do practice questions, you will do good on this class

His notes on the blackboard can be all over the place - it might be more helpful to listen to his lectures and not zone out. His online notes are also rather precise.

Professor Banerjee is the best professor I've had in stats. He made me love the subject, which I really did not before. I loved his lectures - they are very clear, to the point, perfect length and very funny. I am very glad I had a chance to attend his lectures and would recommend anyone to attend anything he is teaching. He is THE BEST STAT PROF!!

One of the highest paid lecturers at Waterloo and worth every penny. If you don't need STAT 231 as a prereq for your future courses, delay taking it if it means you can enroll into his sections.

Good guy

Surya is one of the best professors at UW. I used to hate stats, and have always been terrible at it, but this semester with Surya has changed my mind, and I am enjoying it a lot. If you take this class you'll hear a lot of things like "Everyone ok with that? Anyone? Ok, one more time then, just for me", because he always makes sure you understand.

Banerjee was an amazing professor! Even though this was his first time teaching the course - he put in a lot of effort to make sure students got the core ideas and reasoning! + additional points for being hilarious with a boring subject! 10/10 would take this class with him again!

He's a really engaging prof and cares that his students understand the content being taught.

The best prof at UW? Maybe. He's certainly excellent. Comes to class and teaches with a passion. Able to make the material understandable. Also (why don't more profs do this?) starts every class of a roadmap of what we're doing that day and a review of what was done last class. Makes a huge difference in understanding the fit of the material.

Does a great job of keeping the class's interest during lectures. He also records his final exam help session and uploads it to Learn for those who can't attend. Epic hair and beard, depending on the season. Rumor has it more chalk ends up on his shirt than the board.

He has a great was of explaining the concepts of stats, tests are fairly straightforward.

Dr. Banerjee is by far my favourite prof at UW. He's hilarious, always offers help to his students and is an amazing lecturer! If he feels the students aren't understanding something, he'll repeat the idea which was really helpful (especially if you zone out in class and miss it the first time.) He does recaps of previous classes too. Best prof!!!

By far the best prof at UW I've ever had. Lectures are clear, he reads students to figure out what to explain in more detail, tells you exactly what you need to know for tests, and will often go over difficult concepts twice "just to make sure he gets it". Amazing professor! His jokes are top quality and his lectures are easy to follow and help you understand. It's hard to get a bad mark with this guy as your prof.

His lectures are always worth going to. Amazing at explaining everything taught in class and knows how to keep his students interested during lectures. He really cares about his students doing well in class; he posts lectures notes online and even makes review videos for every test and midterm. Definitely one of the best profs I've ever had.

Very nice prof and each of his class is interesting, but as a whole course, it is suggest to improve with the course organization, he just skip some part of the courses because time limited. and some topics was introduced weeks ago and then talk about something else and then come back later.

100% worth the 8:30 class. His lectures are both entertaining and engaging. He manages to skip massive chunks of the textbook and still manages to prepare us better than any other section. Even better, he uses this extra time to hammer in key concepts. He even sent everyone an email during the covid crisis to make sure everyone's ok. he really care

There're a character limit, so assume I have said everything good that has already been said by others. Saying Surya is a legend is an understatement. During the COVID crisis, he made lecture videos on LEARN and encouraged us to contact him if we needed food, money or just someone to talk to. He is the textbook definition of "above and beyond".

Lectures are super entertaining and he really makes an effort to keep the content relevant to real life applications. Very approachable especially outside of class. Class content doesn't go into heavy examples which is the only downside.
