Although she has had some trouble adjusting to a large lecture hall setting her notes are very clear and fluid and she posts them online after class. Going to lecture isn't all that helpful but the material isn't very difficult either so looking at the notes and occasionally watching a YouTube video on the topic will get you through it.
Her class is very unorganized, and she fails to take advantage of the 50 minute classes, typically ending 15-20 minutes early. She started over the second week of school because she was teaching us different material than what she was supposed to. Would recommend not taking this professor at all costs as you will learn next to nothing
Anyone that says this class is difficult is just not trying. Yes, she does rush through lectures, but notes are posted online. Theres only a few formulas to memorize. The tests are very straightforward. Speak up if she's going to fast in class and utilize office hours. Go to lectures for a preview and study off the posted notes
GO TO OFFICE HOURS. Her lectures are rushed but she is willing to explain everything if you get confused
This class is very easy if you go over the notes she posts separately.
Super nice lady! Admits her mistakes and laughs at herself. Class is easy. Notes posted online are clear and awesome. Going to class may or may not help depending on the student. One midterm and a final along with a weekly hw assignments. There is no reason anyone should fail this class! Very easy and I would definitely recommend it to my friends!!
She would read off of her notes during lecture and then run out of things to teach. i didn't really learn anything from this class.
Cons: Extremely disorganized lecture, went too fast Pros: Easy tests, average grade in class is probably a B/B+, no kidding. She posts all of her notes online so you don't have to get to lecture or get a textbook to do well. Verdict: Take her class. don't go to lecture. Focus on concepts taught in the homework and study her lecture notes .
Professor Alber is very nice and there for you when you need clarification. Sometimes her explanations do not make sense right away but she posts her notes on smart site and piazza. Her notes are very clear and very helpful. Do not need to memorize a lot. She gave a clear study guide for the finals. This is not a hard class.
She is a very very nice lady. The lectures can be boring. Weekly homework, one midterm and final. Go over her notes, do the homework, go to class for the review sessions (she spent the last week of school just to review for final), study her study guide and you'll have your A! Take her if you want to learn and get a very good grade!
Pretty boring lectures . Towards the end of the quarter, I skipped almost every lecture but still got a 100% on both exams. The class isn't hard because the concepts aren't hard to learn by yourself. I wouldn't really give credit to her teaching though . Also her tests were pretty easy and based completely off her lecture notes and homework.
The average course grade an 88%. While her lectures may suck, her notes are very organized and her tests are extremely easy.
Super easy class. Notes always posted online. Her study guide is everything you need to know for the exams so there are no tricks or anything. Office hours are really useful and she's really easy to approach. Homework is easy too. Would take again.
She makes a lot of mistakes in her notes. She is really hard to follow in class so the best way to study is look at her notes outside of class. I didn't really like her notes though because her handwriting was not the best. Her tests were pretty easy though--more conceptual than I expected.
Pros: She's fairly nice and alright during office hours. If you memorize the material, it's an easy A/A- Cons: Despite attending nearly every lecture and getting a decent grade, I can't tell you what I learned. You will be miserable in this class questioning your life decisions. She's an industry statistician, not a teacher.
106 was incredibly easy with Alber. Though, I believe my quarter was an exception because it was her first time teaching at Davis. Her lectures were pointless and she essentially outlined the exam for us. Nice professor, very knowledgable, but 106 was sort of a 'fail' for her.
Alber is a nice lady but she tends to make lots of mistakes during lectures, get confused and seems like she's rushing the entire lecture. She constantly checks her watch which makes me anxious. Otherwise, weekly hw, she has easy-fair tests that are all mc so more conceptual than crunching numbers usually. Overall, would take her again.
She is a nice and helpful lady, and exams are not hard but just remember important concepts. I likes her teaching style, because I learnt a lot from memorizing those things.
She is a good explainer and if you read the textbook you don't have to go to class. Taker her!
She is very detailed and goes over a lot of examples.
I only went to lectures to write notes, but she did post lectures online so attending class is not mandatory. It was hard to digest and understand her teaching. Even though her class is a bit more conceptual, the tests are surprisingly not that hard. However, I can tell you that i don't know what i learned in the end
Good professor! She is the most patient instructor I have ever seen in a class. She is always willing to slow down the pace of the class a little bit more to answer any of students' question in order for the student to understand the materials better. She is also very experienced instructor, she knows the materials extremely well and teaches well.
STAY AWAY!!!! there are many other professors out there that have their ducks in a row, no need to get confused by this one.
She really cares about you learning the concept, and I feel like I have learned a lot in this class with her. Make sure you go to class, and try to follow along. It might be hard to follow at first but once you get it, the lectures are really helpful.
Really boring lectures, very disorganized, and her tests aren't like the study guides she gives you. The discussion was pointless, but the lectures weren't that beneficial either. Kind of had to teach myself.
Professor Alber is a solid choice to get you acquainted with tough statistic topics. Her homeworks were not too straight-forward, but figuring it out really helps with understanding the material. She is always willing to help students understand, and even provides the R code for you. Overall, a fair teacher. I would take her again.
Fairly easy class, but she goes back and forth so often in her lectures that at times it becomes tough to keep up. Doesn't help that the lectures are pretty boring. You have to kind of teach yourself some material, but in general the class is doable and not too tough; two lowest hw's are dropped.
Alber is a good choice for stats, but no curve since average was 79+. Weekly hw is alright and R heavy, but it helps you understand the material. 2 midterms were all multiple choice, so no partial credit. However, final was doable and easier if you study her hw and notes. Tends to make mistakes in lecture, but pay attention and theres no problem
If it's your first time taking stats I would suggest not taking it with this professor. There is homework due every week. She is a poor lecturer. And she does not provide you with practice exams. Does not curve the class.
Useful information taught in a straight forward way. Don't expect plug and chug its a conceptual class. Its more about understanding material than memorizing.
Do NOT choose this professor. This class is a easy one, but her tests were so different from homework. Also, she will not give a sample test.
Avoid taking stats with this professor if you can! Lectures are so boring, prof is forgetful (sometimes doesn't even post homework on website, only on MyStatLab), and just overall not very good.
She's a very nice woman, but literally such a bad teacher for STA 13. All other stat teachers use calculators, thus their classes are easy- NOT her. She writes all her own tests and assigns virtual HW from the online textbook, so the tests are COMPLETELY different than the homework. Would not recommend to anybody.
okay okay okay. So, like at the beginning it's all fine and dandy but as the quarter progresses you will find yourself confused and lost. Her teaching skills are not that great and I would highly recommend getting into study groups as soon as possible because taking this class alone is asking for pure suffering. Tbh avoid her as much as possible.
Professor Alber gives a manageable amount of homework each week which helps to put the ideas into practice. She focuses on helping students understand the concepts of statistics rather than memorizing formulas. Provided you understand the ideas behind the analyses, the formulas are intuitive. She's kind and available so if you have questions, ask.
Susan is a nice little lady, but in order to successfully teach a class you have to have an understanding of how people learn. I think the way she writes out examples and formats her class is so hard to follow, and her tests are just as confusing. The worst part by far, is her final exam study guide which is a flat mess.
This was an awful class. Professor Alber makes the material more confusing with her teaching. I would avoid her at all costs. Her tests are nothing like the homework and she doesn't give sample exams. She makes a lot of mistakes in the notes and goes very fast in lecture. If you don't have prior stats experience do NOT take this class with her.
While in class you may feel a little rushed and confused as you try and copy down her notes, if you go home, sit down, and review them (she posts all the notes and materials online) you will realize that Alber is an incredible teacher. Her notes distills/translates difficult concepts into simple, easily understandable language. Fair tests.
First midterm is fair, second is harder and final is ridiculous. Notes and homework are nothing like the final. Final is worth 40 percent. Two midterms, 25 percent each. Weekly homework worth 10 percent and drops the lowest two assignments.
First 2 midterms were straight from the notes and hw. Make sure to do well on her midterms cause they are easy class average was like in the 80s. Final however was extremely hard and worth 40 % of your grade. I spent 3 whole days studying for the final and still did bad. Class average was really low as well for the final. Professor is good though
Her notes are horrible, I had no idea what she was saying through every lecture. She talks incredibly fast and is everywhere! I purposely got an F in this class to retake with another professor next quarter.
I think it's really important to go to lecture for her classes because if you don't, you will just spend more time looking at notes and trying to figure out what the notes mean. She does go fast but she is really passionate and will help you if you ask for it. Grading is fair and the class was conceptual. I don't think she gets enough credit.
She's a phenomenal lecturer. If you have the chance to take her for an upper division statistics course, do not miss the chance. She's very accessbile outside of class and willing to go over a concept until you understand it.
She is very nice and approachable. Lecture notes are crucial and detailed and you need to read every page as midterms have concept questions. Make sure to leave plenty of time before final to review every question of homeworks and discussions since most final questions are directly from HW and discussions, just numbers changed. Strongly recommend!
I think to understand concepts and ideas is very important for doing well in her class. Calculators and cheat sheets are not allowed in exam, since the way she raised questions is to test whether you really understand how to solve a problem rather than memorize formulae. Study notes carefully and review homework, you will get an A.
I never went to class. look at all the notes she posts and you don't need to go to class study them periodically before the exam and you will be fine. do homeworks honestly.... they are the best prep for the exam. midterms 1-2 are chill final is super easy just a lot of possible topics that can be tested.
Professor Alber was an amazing professor, at first I would try to take notes in lecture but sometimes it was a bit too fast for me to keep up. I later learned it is best to focus on listening and trying to understand the lecture. She will write her notes and explain it as she goes. She then posts the notes online for you to study. Great class!
as long as you go to class and pay attention. go to her office hour. truly understand whats going on and did your homework. it may take some time, but denifitely not hard to get a good grade
The txtbk was online & so was the HW. I didnt really prioritize her class. There are 2 MC MTs & final is all free response. I only studied for a few hours for her 1st midterm a & i did study more for her second MT but got Bs on both. I literally started studying for her final the night before & still passed. this was also my 1st stats class ever.
I got a B on the 1st midterm, all things were good. Then came 2nd midterm, the class average was a 65% yet she did not curve up even when we asked. Final was the hardest. She said she curved the final overall grade, but that was only by a small percent. Honestly did not know why she jacked the difficulty up and did not compensate for it.
She's very organized, and she goes pretty fast in lecture, but she posts the notes which is helpful. The class had 10% hw, 25% for both midterms and 40% for the final. The practice midterms were very similar to the actual tests and will give a curve if necessary. The only thing I had trouble with was R, the hw was R heavy, but overall she's alright
Her lectures are sort of frustrating because she's very scattered. She doesn't write topic sentences or things like that, so sometimes I can't tell if she's writing an important definition or an example until she's done. Also, she's very hard to hear/writes light so you gotta fight to get a seat in the front.
I never written reviews but this professor is horrible. Just reads notes. Forgets her own content and has useless examples half the time. I just relied on my previous statistics knowledge. I literally never had such a bad professor.
If you've taken a stats class before , this class is super easy. Never went to discussion or lecture. Reading is optional. All lecture notes and discussion practice problems are posted online, so its an easy self-study. Found myself learning more not going to lecture because it was so boring.
Doesn't know how to raise volume on microphone and continuously blamed the class noise for other students not being able to hear. Lecture and discussion notes were amazing and very clear to understand. Lectures in person were not as clean as lecture notes. Little to no curve given, so class is very test heavy. Tests very straightforward, not tricky
Prof. Alber isn't the best lecturer, as her explanations of concepts are usually unclear and there isn't always a logical organization. She posts lecture notes (which she simply just reads off of and copies onto the board), so her lectures are usually useless. She means well, but overall, she definitely isn't the greatest professor out there
She moves fast, but does an amazing job of making the 50min lectures actually useful. Questions asked on homework and tests will likely be similar to examples she completes in class. Know your definitions. I went from an 89 to a C because I got behind-in other words, stay on top of the topics.
Alber is a great professor for STA 100. She posts really organized notes on canvas for you to reference and provides practice exams for both midterms and the final. The homework is on canvas and you only need to get 50% of the questions correct to get full credit.
Explains things really clearly, gives a lot of helpful examples, and is really responsive to questions. The quizzes are not difficult if you do the homework and take notes. The final exam covers a lot of information though, so it's easy to lose points on little things. Overall, one of the better STEM professors I've had in Davis.
Professor Alber did a REALLY good job teaching this class this summer. She posted tons of online resources and her discussion section was super helpful. 3 quizzes, lowest is dropped. I'm really sad because I know I won't ever have another statistics class explained as well or made as simple as this class was.
Gives us pre and post lecture notes and practices tests that are EXTREMELY indicative of real tests. Clear lectures if you pay attention. Super fair grader and gives very fair tests! Would definitely recommend.
Took P/NP. Awful just awful. First of all this "teacher" uses a chalkboard in a huge lecture hall. How is anyone able to see past the 5th row? She doesn't know how to use her mic and if you have absolutely no stat experience than good luck because you get two days of basics before being thrown into the complicated stuff. Just take this class at JC.
Best professor in the statistic department I ever met. Clear lecture, easy to understand, and she is always willing to help.
Dr. Alber is the best! Her lectures can be dry but very informative. She covers everything you need to know for tests. Gives ample practice problems/tests that are similar to the actual thing. One of the best professors I've had at Davis. 10/10 would recommend!
I LOVED ALBER! She's such a caring professor and has very clear lectures. Exams are easy if you understand the concepts well, so don't try to memorize everything just focus on understanding the material! Beware of getting behind because it'll be difficult to come back and understand what she is talking about in class. Highly recommend Alber!
She offers a lot of practice midterms but I found them to be much easier than the exam itself. She follows her notes to a T but sometimes gets lost in her notes and can't figure the problem out on her own so she erases the board and says "nevermind", and then the problem will be on the final. Good luck.
Probably the worst professor I have ever had. I taught myself everything in this class. Going to lecture doesn't matter because she posts 'lecture notes' before every class and she literally follows the script. I feel I just dropped so much money for this class and didn't learn anything.
I don't understand the complaints - Alber was amazing. Lectures cover exactly what you need to know, and practice exams identical to the exams. Lecture notes are great for extra review. I got 100% on the first midterm with no background in stats. 25% of students got As in the class. Understand the hw and discussion sheets and you'll have an A.
Easiest A in major requirement ever. If you fail, that just means you're not putting any effort in the course. Literally memorize the practice exams and re-read the lecture notes, and you'll pass fine. She's not for everyone, but if you want to not have study that much, then Alber is the one for you. I never prioritized this class, and I did great.
Her lectures are basically exactly like her notes she posts online. However, she is enthusiastic and generous. Easy HW that are filler points and are the key to your success. Do HW, Disc sheets, and Practice MTs, multiple times and you can get an A. Practice MTs similar to real MTs. I had no background in Stats and I can say it was an easy class.
Professor Alber was certainly a nice lady and is always willing to offer help if you ask. Her Lectures are a bit slow and unclear at times, but for the most part she had some sort of agenda every class. She posts pre and post lecture notes which are insanely helpful so study those. Thought I could have gotten a little more from a regression class.
She goes really fast but says very little. Lectures are confusing I did better when I stopped attending lecture and spent that time with a tutor. She posts lectures and lots of practice. Homework is on canvas and its super easy to get 100%. She doesnt give good examples. Everyone I knew did horrible on exams. This was a GPA killer for me.
no need to go to lecture. She literally just write down everything she has on the notes, which are uploaded on Canvas the night before lecture. She seems to have other priorities besides teaching, which is understandable. It being a research university. Still, we pay for these classes, so we should get a professors effort in return.
Professor Alber is a really nice lady. Her lectures are super clear. (stat itself is not an easy subject. If you don't put in enough work, you would certainly feel the lectures are confusing and you are not getting the grades you want) And she is funny.
Her notes will be uploaded before the day of class. The notes are super clear and I could nor expect not more for the clarity. The exams are pretty much like the practiced ones. The homework allows two attempts and they are the same. Take her class and you won't regret unless you want to challenge yourself.
Class is an easy A. I attended zero lectures and studied the night before. Right now I'm sitting at a 94% before the final. But she does not put any effort into teaching because she has other priorities. If you want a professor that teaches and engages with you, avoid her! Want an easy A? Take her! Beware, this class is self-study
Professor Alber is an easy A. Never went to class, studied 2-3 hours before the exam and I've aced her class. Practice exams are a treasure. Her exam questions are straightforward.
Stopped going to lectures after week 3 cuz her notes online are identical to what she teaches anyway. Didn't take much away from those 3 weeks, but I have to give credit where credit's due. Alber is very thorough. If you read her notes she goes in extreme depth. HW is easy, Midterms are easy, final was easy. Hardest part was remembering to do HW
Dr. Alber is a great professor. She post her notes online before each lecture and she would copy them on the board for each class. She is a solid choice if you're taking statistics. Her exams are exactly like the practice exams. There is HW every week but it is very doable. She is a really nice professor who is willing to help you.
I used textbook from the library and never went to the lecture. She provides lecture notes which is exactly the same as the lecture content. Exams can be difficult if you don't show up to lecture and study by yourself, but it is almost the same as the practice exams. Understand how to approach to solve them. You get 100% on hw if you get above 60%.
Her notes are very clear. You basically can just learn materials by yourselves. 45% of students got A- or better in the end.
She is nice and explain things well. Her quiz are easy with 2 attempts with clear solving process after the 1st . However, you should take each attempt seriously in order to actually learn something and find your mistakes. She will remind you of something important in class, so remember to attend lectures! Discussion is for practice, not mendatory.
Her syllabus is excellent. Her homework grades will change to 100% if you have a score higher than 60%. Her final and midterms are related to homework and practice exam. If you understand her materials and every question in homework and practice exam. You will definitely get a high grade.
Quite dry, but she is very thorough in her notes. However, during lecture, she doesn't explain the notes at all but just says what she writes, so many people skip. Exams mostly based on homework and discussion problems; solve them and you will do great. Solutions all posted. There will be a few conceptual questions based on lecture concepts also.
I literally love Prof. Alber, Idk why she her rating is so low. Class is literally cake as long as you go and listen (take notes) you should be fine. Homework is super easy and her practice exams are basically identical to her real exams. Over 50% of the class got an A. She is super funny and cute too so I would recommend attending lecture!
Professor Alber is really a good professor. Half of our class got A- and above last quarter. Choose Professor Alber if you need to take STA100. The TA of this class are always very patient and great. Love this class.
She posts her notes word for word online along with a podcast so there's no use in going to lecture. She made the material super clear to learn and posted 3 practice tests before each midterm, in which the midterm problems came exactly from. Super solid choice!
Professor Alber does not know how to teach, her lectures are very generic and do not make much sense. I stopped going after the first week, and just focused on her practice midterms and got an 89.95 in her class which she did not round. If you take her, prepare to do a lot of self teaching, and do not bother going to class.
Class of 300 students but she won't use the projector. Writes everything on the chalkboard and has issues with the mic so you'll have to fight for the first 5 rows (good luck with that). Lectures are an exact copy of the notes she posts online so people just don't show up. She's nice & accessible but she's not the best lecturer.
Dr. Alber isn't the best lecturer. Has problems with the mic so sit close to the board. She doesn't pay attention to student feedback during lectures so difficult to ask questions so speak up. B/c of this, lectures are exhausting but worth going b/c she's very organized and prepared for her lectures. She is great during OH. Lots of practice tests.
Stats is not for me!! Her lectures were boring because she copies the notes she posts on canvas on the chalkboard. Yes, she uses a chalkboard for a lecture hall that hold up to 500 students. You can definitley get away with just taking notes off of the one's she posts on canvas they are exactly the same. Practice MT are similar to actual MT.
Super easy class. Didn't show up to any of the lectures because she puts the lecture slides online. Do the practice midterms and go through the homework and should be an easy A.
The class was incredibly EASY. I forced myself to go to lectures just because I know I'd procrastinate in studying. Not an enthusiastic lecturer. If you just want the A, take her. If you actually want to understand the topic, don't. It is that simple. Beware of silly mistakes, and practice with everything she gives you before exams.
She's very clear with what she expects from you on exams & doesn't really throw any curve-balls. The class was basically like AP stats if you took that in HS. HW is essentially a guaranteed 10% of your grade & I cannot stress this enough: do the practice exams as they are VERY similar to the actual tests (& do the "harder" problems more than once)
Amazingly hard-working--whenever a nontrivial question was asked in class, she would take hours of her own time to write up and post a multi-page PDF that answered the question perfectly. Not-insignificant amount of weekly homework but plenty of hints so you're rarely lost. "Easy" grader but in no way do you learn less for it. #1 in the stats dept.
