She is the worst teacher I took at Montgomery College. She does not help you at all, she does not explain anything because she doesn't understand. And if, you are not one of her favorites, you can kiss an A goodbye...Bottom line, I would not recommend her
Susan is awesome!! She was one of my favorite professors at MC, she knew what she was doing and explained things well. I do admit that if you're not one of her "favorites", she tends to be a little tougher. but I always had a ton of fun in her
Gives you everything you need to know for her exams. She's alway available when you need help (Her or Coley or SLC). Just remember, organic chemistry is not easy anywhere you go. Lot's of note card and time at SLC with study partners and you'll do just fine.
The course is fairly difficult, but what about instructor's honesty, professionalism, and decency? I do not recommand her. Look for other instructors or schools, please.
The bottom line is that organic chem II is not for dummies. Regardless of the teacher it will be difficult wherever u go. This woman is a good instructor and her course is well structured.U must invest ample time outside class. And for those who gave her bad reviews, its not that she is terrible - its just that U R LAZY!!!!!!
Very fair, clear, helpful. Wouldn't have made it through Org. chem without her
's up? Warning, Warning! She's hot as hell. However, her exams are hard. She talks really fast and she does not like when people ask her questions. If you take a class with her, Good Luck. Do take her lab. She's really good with lab stuff.
She is very helpful and makes you think.
Very fair teacher, talks fast at times but she is still good, fair tests and really good for labs. Highly recommend her
I took her for lecture and thought that she was one of my best teachers! She does tend to teach fast, but she will slow down if asked. She really desires her students to understand and do well. She is a fair teacher and lets you know everything that she will cover on tests. I highly recomend her for 101
This professor don't give make-up exams...eventhough you have a excuse reason
fast pase but very good for those students who do not like to be bored or held up hearing the answers to stupid questions
the worst professor i've ever had!
she was my favorite teacher. i never understood chem before i took her, but now i feel like i do. she truely cares and will help anytime. tests are hard but fair if you study. lecture can go fast at times but she is always willing to slow down. HIGHLY recomend this teacher!
She is not a good instrutor. Her lectures are very elementary --Unprepared! Her background as a Lab-technician sets her as a worse Orgnaic Chemistry instructor ever. Needless to say, her personal problems somewhat interfere in her professional life. Not Recommended!
had her for orgo...she's terrible! in lecture she'll go over the easiest problems and on the test she'll give you the hardest. when she doesn't know something or makes a mistakes she blames it on us saying that it was to see if we'd catch it. unless Dr. Pires is teaching... take orgo at another school cuz Bontems and Issacs are terrible!

Very Good teacher.
Best Chemistry professor...........
She is a terrible teacher ever. She is too fast. you do not learn any thing in the class. You have to study all by your self. the tests are too long.

Excellent Professor. She really went out of her way to help and be available whenever any of us needed assistance. I would never have gotten as much out of the class without her and I would reccomend her to anyone who needs Chemistry. She's awesome!
She is very knowledgeable, friendly and enthusiastic. She is extremely helpful and loves to answer questions from her students. I had may chemistry instructors (my major required), but I like her way of teaching the most. Orgo is enjoyable for students in her class. At least 7 students got A's the semester I took her class. Hightly recommended. A++
Wonderful instructor! I lived very far from the campus but went there just to take her class as my friend told me not to miss it! Very clear in explaining the material and what we were going to have on the exam. Thank you for your help with even the problems on PCAT! So caring and helpful! I've recommended my friends to take her class. The best!!!
Susan is really helpful, and explains Organic chemistry in a way that is easier to understand.
Excellent teacher, very understanding. Even when I was no longer in her class I could still ask her questions and she would help me!
Excellent teacher, she is very helpful!
Great professor, goes out of her way to help students outside of class, very clear explanations in class. Challenging class, but you can't expect any chem class to be easy. Do assigned homework and it helps a lot.
Excellent instructor, gives tons of extra practice problems, and if that's not enough she'll give you more, by email if you want. She's willing to spend as much time out of class as necessary to help you understand material. Best teacher I've ever had!
Great prof! Study the notes and do homework and u can do well.
One of the best chemistry professors I've had. Very caring. Will help you if you need it. When in doubt, take her!!! Tests are challenging, but taking organic is always a challenge. Study hard, and you'll do fine. 100% recommend her!!
Prepares you well for tests. It's takes effort to get an A. Study hard, and you can make the A. Very flexible. Awesome professor! I learned SOOO much in this class. You won't be disappointed, I promise. Is always in her office if you need help.
Lectures really help plus lots of sample problems. She's happy to help after class too. I got into pharmacy school, so I'm happy!
Simply awesome! Very caring. Highly recommended! A++++++
I took Orgo 204 with her and she's the best professor I have ever known. Either you really want to learn for knowledge or you just take the class as requirement, I high recommend you to take Chemistry with this professor. Her lectures were very clear and straight forward. She highlighted what she will have in the test.
This course was supposed to be a killer but she made it make sense. Her tests are just like her teaching. Gotta go to class and study and do some homework to get an A.
i had both orgo 1 and 2 with her and I was in her honor class as well ,she is so hard .I had only her class an micro . the other one was the best and this class was like night mer for me. I was lucky to get an A in her class . I don't rec omened her at all.
The class was hard but she taught it very well. She is always available for help. She gives her 100%, you should be ready to put in yours to get an A. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!
class is all about her and her love , D_NEWLIN
This is a very hard class and Her Exams are Unbelievably hard! it's like she enjoys watching ppl strugle with them. I was also in her honors class and my word of advice is DONT TAKE IT!!! honors doesnt do anything for you, it doesnt help your grade, other schools dont even care! It's just a waste of 2 hours of your life and gas.
As my first chemistry class in the USA, i understood her at every topics. That class wasn't hard!!!!
Very helpful. She comes around to answer questions in discussion and wants to make sure you understand and learn and get a good grade.
It took me awhile to be able to call her "Susan" instead of "Prof. Bontems." She is so friendly and extremely helpful. She made you work hard because she wanted you to learn. And if you choose to talk CH204, then you must be majoring in health care field. So you must work hard and be precise. She made me love chem. The best prof. I've ever had. A++
Great prof! Tons of practice problems really helped me to do well.
She's very helpful, clear, and provides good examples. She really wants people to understand and shes very nice. She grades very fairly. i really recommend her
funny and good at explaining stuff. tests aren't too hard.
Beautiful, Smart, Brilliant. However, you must put in the time to do well (like most other science classes).
She is a great professor. Explains things very well, and she is always willing to help outside of class, even if your not in her class. Her quizzes in pre-lab are pretty hard, so make sure you understand the lab before coming in. She goes a little fast at times, but overall the quality is good, but you have to put in the time too. She?s a cutie
She is the best chmnistry professor at Germantown campus. You always will understand her lectures and she provides good examples and a lot of help out of class. You don't need to read the textbook before class or review it before a quiz or exam, her quizzes and exams are easy if you do your best, like me. I got an A in both CH 100 and CH 101.
Susan's lectures are clear, which she supplements with a step by step example sheet, example problems in class, and if you still need help she enjoys answering questions either in class or during her office hours. Attendance is not mandatory, there are weekly tests, but the non-mandatory homework problems she gives are usually similar to the quiz.
I love Susan's teaching methodology! She's awesome! Extremely helpful even when I came to ask her questions at her lunchtime; she was very happy to help me out. She made CH204 not a burden but enjoyable. Willing to help me with recommendation letter for my pharmacy school. My respect and affection for her forever. Highly recommended. A+++++
Simply the best! Highly recommended. I wish to have all my instructors like her. Enthusiastic, friendly, helpful, generous, humorous, encouraging, knowledgeable. Thanks for making Orgo so fun and easy to understand, Susan! You are my best organic chemistry professsor.
Susan is one of the best professors of mine! She makes orgo 2 very enjoyable. Number professor of organic II in Germantown. Highly recommended.
Really awesome professor. She is always there to help you, she teaches the material very clearly, and is quite easy on the eyes! However, you better put in the effort if you want the A. If you buckle down and study, there is no reason why you shouldn't get the A. Susan Bontems ftw!
She is the best chemistry teacher from my perspective and from everybody I know takes chemistry. Even people from rockville campus come all the way to germantown to take her class because she is very nice and she really knows how to teach organic. Makes the material fun, labs are the best specially friday labs! I highly recomend her she is beautifu
Wonderful professor! Class was interesting and I enjoyed it very much. The book was a waste of money, I don't think I ever used it. If you attend class and follow her lecture there is no need for the text. Tests and quizzes are fair and there were never any surprises. Discussions each class are the perfect time to ask questions and get clarity.
Amazing! She breaks down the material so its easy to understand. She offers past quizzes and tests as study guides and her tests and quizzes are always straight forward. She is also available for help outside of the class
she is the best, her tests are hard, but the way she teaches you can expect that. she is so nice. I like her method. she is so understanding and careing. she is not just a professor, she is a good friend. GOD Bless her. thank you susan @};-
I have never worked so hard in my life. I?ve taken four other science classes prior to Chemistry101 and got a B in all of them. I worked even harder in this class and got a D. ??? I don?t think it was possible for me to have worked any more/ harder than I did.
Prof. Bontems breaks down the material so its super easy. She offers help during her office hours and is always available through email. I took Ch101 with another professor and had to drop. But Bontems is AMAZING, she even gives out old tests and quizzes so there are no surprises.
She is not easy at all.Her idea of average-good is a C and (I have a 3.9 now) She tends to talk over your level and is very anal. If you have to take chem at Germantown go with Pires(very smart and good at explaining and very straight forward) or Isaacs(not as good at explaining but is more lenient). Do not take Newlin, Bontem's BF, anal like her.
Great professor! Her style is not for everybody but she explains everything so well and makes orgo pretty easy to understand. She really loves what she teaches and will try to make you love it too. She is super helpful and will work with you to make sure that you're doing well. Highly recommended.
Ch102, a class which I personally believe was the toughest I've ever taken. Her tests are fair and she teaches the material clearly. She overall was a good teacher, very nice and clear.
As a graduate of Montgomery College and a science major, I can honestly say Susan Anal Bontems was the worst professor I have ever had.
Susan Bontems was a nice crystal clear teacher that taught very well. i hated chemistry before i took her chem. 203 class over the summer semester. I got an "A" and to deserve it i had to work hard every day. if you are not committed you will do poorly. do the TEXTBOOK QUESTIONS!! they are very helpful. her grading is a little off but i recommend
The only reason Bontems is highly regarded at Montgomery College for Chem is because she is the only Chem prof. who is easy to understand...besides that, she is not the most fair professor. I have gotten 2 A's on the first 2 exams and a C on the third, while studying just the same for all (A LOT). Prepare to study and feel jaded on the exams.
I loved Susan! (yes, she wants you to call her Susan) her tests were challenging but as long as you study hard, it's not too bad. She explains things very well and offers additional help! I was first in line to sign up for her next semester!
Take notes and do work and you can do good.
I cannot speak too highly of Susan or recommend her enough. I've taken Organic I and 2 with her, and easily classify her as the best prof. I've ever had. Crystal clear explanations, super friendly, very fair grading exams and grading, and total competence in the subject. Take notes, ask questions, make lots of flashcards. You won't regret it!

Professor Bontems is the best organic chemistry teacher in the U.S. I actually understood it when she taught and I'm horrible at chemsitry. I wish I had her for Ochem 2 =/
Study and do the problems and you'll do fine. Class is very organized and she has the best hand outs. Took her for the summer she's awesome. Had prof metaferia for lab and he's just an absolute nightmare! Quizzes he gave did not correspond with lecture or what we were even learning! So take SUSAN for lab too.
I had her for CH101, 203, and 204. She is wonderful. My notes were crystal clear thanks to her excellent teaching style. I wish I took the honors module with her!
The best chemistry teacher I have every had! She is fair, and will answer any and all questions. Her tests are all modeled the same way and she has practice tests online you can use to study which are super helpful! I cannot recommend her enough! Best chem teacher ever!
I wish I could give Professor Bontems a higher rating than 5/5. She is wonderful lecturer, a fair grader, and a nice person. Her teaching style makes the material incredibly easy to understand, and she is always willing to help any student with anything. Definitely, definitely take Professor Bontems.
I dont know what the person below me is smoking but she is the most useless teacher ever. completely ruined chemistry for me. horrible. just a horrible teacher. Avoid if you can!!!
She's a good teacher, she just makes you think critically a lot. Do her HW probs and practice exams/quizzes and you should be ok. She's not an easy professor but she does thoroughly explain. She's NOT easy but you will learn.
She is a great teacher who is very enthusiastic and knowledgable of chemistry. She really challenges you to think critically, however she is always more than helpful when it comes to understanding the material. I used to fear and dread chemistry, however during the course, it easily became my favorite subject! P.S it doesn't hurt that she's hot ;)
102 was much tougher for me than 101, however she compensated this by spending more time lecturing us. She also challenged us to critically think more with new types of problems that were easily cumulative. I'm very grateful for being sharpened and challenged by her testing and quizzing style. She offers a lot of bonus points and time outside class
Better than Dr. Newlin. Enough said.
I heard she was a hard but good teacher...she was terrible. I am an A-B average student and she gave me a D. First time I ever got a D in anything. I got a B in 203 from a different teacher. Studying was not the problem. I studied days before each exam. Basically if you're not one of her honors students she thinks your not working hard enough
What a terrible teacher. Where is her professionalism and decency? Avoid at all costs. The reason why there are so many good comments on here is cuz she writes her own comments. Goes to show even she's insecure about her teaching.
She is a fair grader take her, I wish I took her for CHEM 203 and CHEM 204.
PLEASE TAKE TIME AND LECTURE FOR GOODNESS SAKE! It's called Lecture and Discussion for a reason. If she would actually do her job and teach, the class would have probably been a lot smoother for me. I literally went home and taught myself the material. Groups don't work when you do every single class!!! Don't recommend her at all.
She doesn't lecture. You MUST do the study guides, take the online quiz, and read the chapter BEFORE class in order to get anything out of the discussion. She doesn't really teach, you have to rely on your peers so make sure you get into a study group with smart people. She's nice though, and will answer questions IF you ask
she does NOT TEACH AT ALL!!!! does lit. for 5 mins and then a an hour of group. when we use the book in discussion she gets mad. LIKE HELLO YOU DID NOT TEACH IT!!
AVOID AT ALL COST!! i left class thinking did we have lecture?? does not teach. shes a poor excuse!
Very good teacher, but very tough on exams, hard to get A
Had her for 101 and although she does not lecture 100%, if you do the study guides & 5 question quizzes you'll be prepared for the next day of class. We do group discussions all the time, but sometimes that's the only thing that will motivate you to do the work. Loved her, plan on taking her again! Thought 102 was easier than 101!
Does not teach. Gives study guides, and you get together with 2-3 people and work as groups on problems.. Students who do well in the class and prior students are given preferential treatment. Does not lecture so don't expect one just a 10 min preview. Expect to teach yourself and spend ample time in the Science Learning Center with a tutor.
Hard teacher, but she means well. Try not to get on her bad side, do homework and participate in class (try not to miss class you'll lose points). The only thing I didnt like about her class is that you work in groups of 3 or 4 every discussion/lecture.
Prof. Susan has such a different Teaching style than most Professors. She has the class mostly learning by doing problems together in groups instead of listening to lecture. You must read the textbook and spend tons of time studying on your own but she is a fair grader. One of the better Chem Prof. at Germantown Campus.
She encourages us to work hard. The course was difficult but she made it simple with her explanation.
She's great
Honestly one of the worst professors I've ever had. She's a nice individual but her discussions are way too hard compared to her 20ish minutes of lecture on the general subject of the week. I felt extremely confused in the majority of the classes because I didn't understand half of her questions because of her wording. Would not recommend.
Rude teacher who does not help all she does is tell you to get help elsewhere
Hard to exceed in this class when you are not even being taught but are being expected to walk in knowing everything already and she is rude when u ask questions for clarification
Excellent teacher. Would recommend to anyone.
taken chem131 and 132 with her. had nightmare with chemistry before, but now I can learn to like it. very helpful. All you need to do is read the book, do the study guide, homework, online quiz. Exams are tough but if you study, you'll get A. Definitely read textbook and examples before class! Don't come late.
Took organic chemistry honors with her. She's a great teacher in that she won't waste your time reading the book to you. Instead she goes through problems in class. If you want a lecture, go elsewhere, but if you are the kind of guy like I am who usually is bored in class she will ensure the class time is productive for you.
Good teacher, but she's DEF NOT easy. Explains well, but its a lot of work since you have to read the book ahead of time.
Bontems was great! I used to hate chemistry before I had her. Although her class is difficult, it definitely teaches you how to work hard in classes and manage your time effectively. Expect to work in groups of 4 most of the class. She gives out classwork that is turned in at the end of the class for points. She also gives tons of bonus points
Understanding basic math should be a prerequisite to becoming a chemistry teacher. How ridiculous that when students show their work, she can't follow!!
She's a tough grader, but if you make the effort and she sees that you're making the effort, she will help you, she does have expectations of her students, like you can't just walk through the door and leave and expect to understand the material, it takes a constant effort, but you can do well, I really recommend her, she's quite organized :)
I took her class but I was very lucky to get C. I don't know why so many people give her a very good feedback. I will not recommend her. Stay away from her if you have other choices.
Rude, rude, rude! It was a personal nightmare to get up and attend her class. On one of my worse days, he would grab my paper from my hand and point out each mistake to the class as an example of what not to do. That was just a typical day.
Her method of teaching is lecture for 15 min, Discussion between you and your group of study for the rest of the class, provide you with lots of paper work, and give you hard quizzes and exams. In this class you will have to teach YOURSELF. She provides you with all the material you need but will not actually teach you. Shes rude and careless.
She's the worst. She expects you to know everything and lectures for about 10-15 min out of the 2 hours of class time and you're stuck for the rest of class with your group. Rude and careless!
Take this class if you already KNOW CHEMISTRY! This is NOT the class to take if you are learning chemistry for the first time. She is a nice BUT does not know how to teach. In a 2 hour class she will manage to teach about 10-15 mins and the time left is spent doing group work with people struggling to teach each other. I Do not recommend!!!!
She is a tough grader, but if you put all of your effort you will love her class. Although her class is hard, she gives a lot of extra points, which helps your grade. I had her for my 131 and I got A and I am taking her class for 132, also i plan to take her for Organic 1 and 2, too. Chemistry is not easy, so you need to study hard.
It was frustrating trying to teach myself something I didn't know. Lecture lasts 2 hours, the first 10-15 minutes is the professor actually lecturing, the rest is spent in groups doing a packet - with people equally confused! With the amount of self-teaching and studying needed, I only recommend to take this class if you take NO other classes
Good professor. Lectures are well put together and organized. Discussion is difficult, but she will answer all your questions. Utilize office hours as much as you can. Quizzes are manageable, she reviews beforehand. Tests are very difficult, studying a week minimum is absolutely essential to doing well. She's also really attractive lol
I took Chem131 and it was a flipped class. You are expected to know the material before going to class and are expected to go to the SLC if you do not understand. She eats during class, while you are in groups trying to figure out the practice problems. She tells you to drop the class if you don't do well on the first exam. She is discouraging.
Course work is expected to be understood before class starts, and lecture only lasts 20 minutes. Course is extremely difficult if you have not had any experience of higher level chemistry (like AP). Online textbook was HORRIBLE and you learned nothing from it. Discussions hard if you struggle with solving things other than how they are taught.
You need to know the course work before attending the class. She will briefly go over things and fairly quickly too. Lecture can run from 20-30 minutes and the rest is time used for discussion. She isn't that helpful, just expects you to help one another.
She is a caring woman, but she speeds through lecture and expects you to learn everything in groups. It works for some students, but not all.
Professor Bontems barely explains the material; she rushes through it so fast there is barely any time to ask questions. Her grading criteria is not very clear. The class is challenging, but she definitely does not help make it easier (if anything, she makes it harder).
Awful! Does not teach and does not help her students. Her class was a nightmare. Don't do it to yourself! I got a pretty good grade in her class, but learned nothing and have come to hate chemistry because of her.
Honestly, she is a really tough grader and demands a lot of work out of her students but she knows what she is talking about. The material is challenging at times but I think her "power lectures" do the job just fine. Reading the chapters beforehand is incredibly helpful though. And most importantly, when I asked her for help she gave it to me.
I had Prof, Susan since 131 to 204 and I like the way that she teaches. She is willing to help you if you put your effort into the class. She gave a lot of extra credits to help your grades, and she teach you the way that you never forget the materials.
Hardest professor existing at Montgomery College.
She is not a good professor. I don't know how her rating is even a 3.6. She can be very rude to her students and she does not lecture for more than 15 minutes on a good day. In addition her lectures are not clear and she speeds through them. She made general chemistry much harder than it has to be. Worst professor I have had at Montgomery College.
Professor Bontems made chemistry accessible to her students. She broke down difficult concepts into manageable chunks through the use of pre-lecture homework, short lectures, and in-class worksheets. The class was more of a flipped class where outside preparation made in-class time much more profitable.
The teacher expect students to learn things in their. I had an accelerated class and never hated chemistry so much.
She grades really hard. She expects student to learn the material on their own. I ended up getting A in the course because I went to the learning center to understand the material. She rushed through the materials. She expects you to come to class by knowing all chemistry skills. You have to do study guides, and quizes before attending class.
She only gives lecture for 15 minutes. The rest of the class is discussion. Chem131 class seems to be a nightmare with her.
If you don't want to stress yourself out any further than you already are. Don't enroll in her class. It becomes worse during the semester, and she doesn't do anything to help or answer questions. It was far worse than I had anticipated, so keep an eye out for yourself. She had a tendency to change her mood , which impacted the class
She literally provides 10 minute lecture. I don't know how to consume the lecture within 10 minutes. If you want to save yourself from stress, don't take her class.
She did not do anything to make this class easier. I passed out from the class because of her learning assistant. You have to read the book, and do the homework and quiz before the class then she gave 10-15 minute class lecture, and then put all the students in different blackout rooms to solve hard problems. She made this class terrible hard.
There were tests before class started every week and it basically started mini panic attacks. Plus getting a full A was nearly impossible in this class.
Professor Susan is beyond amazing, both professionally and personally. She can come off as intimidating and a hard grader but if you get a bad grade its def bc you deserve it. Her lectures are well put and are focused on sample problems for when quizzes and exams come around. Trust me when I say you will not regret taking chemistry with her.
i was really scared to take orgo but prof bontems really helped me enjoy this class. her lectures are really fun and engaging and she tries to help you every chance she gets. she cares a lot about her students and is super approachable. will miss you susan! chemistry is no longer a class i dislike
Susan is a great professor, she is a hard grader but is very fair. She is an amazing lecturer and can explain hard orgo concepts. Do the end of chapters the problems as they appear on the quiz/ exams. Overall a great professor and would take it again. She is very nice and caring of her students.
Susan is honestly a really great professor who you can ask any question without feeling dumb. She gives extra credit on exams just for reviewing. She drops the lowest quiz and exam for 203 and 204. She is organized by chapters while the other Orgo prof. go by topics. Pick your poison, but Susan is really patient and easygoing.
She is a great professor who is very organized. Her lectures are very short and to the point as long as you do the reading you will be fine. There are 4 exams including the ACS and one is dropped there is also a bunch of quizzes every week that really help you prepare for the exams. Be aware of tricky problems on both quizzes and exams
No No No No Don't take her. It's not gonna be easy, will be close to Hell. Materials are hard and she is bad.
I have to repeat because it was alot and she didn't seem to help and was passive aggressive lady. Always in rush and not helping.
Susan is a really good professor. She clearly outlines expectations and test dates on the syllabus. She makes sure we get the necessary preparation, and our lectures are clear and detailed.
I had Susan both Orgo 1 and 2, and she was one of the most understandable professors I had at MC. Everything she explained made sense and she is a strict grader. Overall, make sure you read chapters ahead of time, don't be afraid to come in early and ask questions. Exams were similar to HW + Discussion, one can get dropped. Same with lab. Have fun!
If you know you're weak at chemistry do not take this class with this professor, it will be very difficult b/c she expects everyone to know everything the first day. I asked for help more than twice and she got annoyed. She lectures for about 10 minutes then puts you in groups everyday in rotation with a worksheet, and expects you to learn together
