very hard, lots of work, very particular-not an easy grade, our first paper one person out of seventy got an "A"
Susan is a wonderful English teacher! She is down to earth and full of real-life information. I highly recommend taking Susan because her course will definately prepare a student for academic transfer.
VERY DIFFICULT
Best English instructor I've ever had! Not a class for lazy people who are just looking to "pass." She expects no less than the normal standards. The readings are limited, she will always adjust the course to meet students needs. Very understanding, friendly, approachable and engaging with her students. She deserves an "A" PLUS in teaching!
She was an awesome professor, however, the class is not difficult but does require effort to earn an A. I recommend this course, she really cares about her students and takes the time to re-explain a concept if needed.
Good professor (in class), explains well and makes it interesting. Cons: Usually too busy to give you feedback when out of class, takes a while to reply emails. Ask in writing what she expects from each assigment. Don't waste money buying the books, copy chapters used in I.A. Parts used in others can be obtained from original source in library.
Professor Caggiano is an excpetional english teacher that can help the worst of writers become great ones. On top of being a wonderful professor with useful information she is funny and sometimes is just like one of the students. I highly reccomend her for anyone who really wants to improve as a writer.`
she was horrible because she picks favorites and does't give clear comments on essays. tells you that you can re-do essays but you WONT have time. not organized shares her personal issues with class and makes them feel like**** just bc we live better than her. very unexpecting. trust me.
I hate doing homeworks and write essays, but with susan who is the best teacher I ever had in english, I started actually doing some work hard. She is so motivating and she makes the classes really interesting. I am a real lazy student but I got a B and I actually had fun doing my work. I learned so much!!! You need to take her!
wow the comment above that says she tells her problems...TRUE. i had her too and i got a C!! i have always gotten As in english. DONT TAKE HER. she DOES pick favorites and goes into deep convos with them and excludes the entire class. Unfair and vague grading style. you dont know how to improve!
Amazing teacher! she really cares about her students/ challenges you. not the easiest class but youll definately enjoy learning what she has to teach you- she knows what shes talking about. little slow to respond to emails
I am not an english person and I passed. She is not hard. If you just do just essays you'll be find. If your not so in love with english, I recommend her.
she is a very nice lady and she really helps you out, just be active in her class and keep talking, you can easily get A
Good teacher, hard class. You must read ahead and do all the homework or you will fail, even if you already know Spanish. She checks the homework, and offers correction. Cheerful, requires class participation whether the class knows what it's doing or not. Good teacher, hard class. Expect at least half to drop.
Excelent English teacher. Grades based on quality of work, not political viewpoint or effort. Really wants to teach students how to think independently and manipulate language. If you go to her office hours she will work with you and show you exactly what you need to change.
Professor Caggiano is a teacher who really loves what she does.Extremely helpful, she makes you feel welcomed to visit her office hours anytime. She has even come in on her off day to help students! She is also a VERY GENEROUS grader. She doesn't care about stupid typos and punctuation errors, she is only interested in what you have to say.Great teacher
she is AWSOME and cool!! she is so helpfull and she realy does teach u how to think. i had english one and now i am having english two with her. and i wish there was an english 3 that i could take with her!
LOVE HER. I took her Scholars class in Fall of '08 and she's perfect for students who appreciate challenging work, with 0% drama. She is smart, sweet, understanding, and always happy to help her students. If you want boring, easy-peasy-turn-your-brain-to-mush type of work, look elsewhere. Otherwise, she is an absolutely wonderful teacher, take her!
Great professor! She is a genuine, smart and very helpful person. Her class is interesting and you'll learn a lot. She's also a really fair grader
She is so sweet and helpfull. If you want to improve, she will give you the time ... but remember one thing, nothing is for free, you've got to work hard.
One of the best English teachers I have had in a very long time. She is very helpful is all aspects of essay writing, and is very accommodating with her office hours. Class conversations are always interesting, but you have to be sure to say something at least once per class, because she does grade on attendance and participation.
Prof. Susan Caggiano is doing a great thing instilling critical thought into her writing composition course. No matter how good you are, be prepared to push your writing skills. Even if you're average, if you show improvement, an A is more than possible. Great professor!!!
She is just the best, not easy but makes up for it by being a really good professor. Recommended!!!!
I had her for the last half of the semester, and really enjoyed her. She is very smart, extremely knowledgeable, and engages every student in class discussions.
She is my favorite teacher from this semester. She makes you think a lot, her classes are mostly discussions that help you out when writing the essay. Engage and work hard and you will absolutely love this class!
She is the best english teacher that I had.Extremely helpful...Go to office hours and she will answer all your questions...I got an A but it is not easy A kind of class...she is a fair grader...not that much assignments but hard essays. She is really kind, knowledgeble and knows the material she is talking about. I strongly recommend her!
Very helpful, essays were a life lesson. Not hard but not easy. I got an A and I put didn't put much effort into one essay out of three. Plus Research paper. If you want to learn take her.
I really enjoyed her class. The essays (two take home and two in class) were relatively easy and she's a pretty lenient grader. There also is a ten page research paper and a group project as the final but both of those things weren't hard, just time consuming. I'd definitely recommend taking her.
Great teacher! Very helpful and while the essays (three) were challenging she made the assignment very clear and gives helpful examples. One group presentation which was easy and she even goes through it with you! Highly recommend!!!
Highly recommended. Very helpful, a no-nonsense teacher. And a fair grader.
Caggiano is a great teacher! I feel stressed with essays en general, but I did well in her class. You need the textbook occasionally, and can probably get away with using sparknotes for 1984. She is helpful an lenient with turning in work. There is an 8 pg paper due, but you can totally go to her for help. I definitely recommend her.
Best English Teacher I have ever had. She is clear and fair with assingnments. Class is interesting and helpfull. Very helpful! she is a great teacher!! highly recomend her! go to class! takes points off if you dont!
Caggiano is a pretty good professor for English 1 and 2. She is pretty clear on lecture, rearranges the syllabus to accommodate our workload (though it can be annoying to not have the new syllabus online) and she says we are always welcome to come to office hours when we need help. Essays can be tough, but doable. a paper is due at the end.
Wow! I didn't expect to like this class. Not an easy A, but an awesome class to take, worth the work. You WILL become a better writer, and a better editor as well. Prof. Caggiano, is an amazing teacher, and always eager to help you if you have any problem. The discussions were fantastic, and even the essay prompts were engaging. I highly recommend!
She is the best professor I have had at Santa Monica College. She helped me look at the world around me differently.
She is an amazing professor to take if you want to improve your writing skills.
The most funniest, helpful teacher I've taken so far at SMC. She makes class fun. Whatever she teaches you, you can use in the outside world as well. Very helpful! Highly recommend!!
Gave clear and helpful feedback on papers. Open to students coming to office hours. However, multiple times I felt frustrated in class because she'd spend 30 minutes talking about non-class subjects. She could've spent more time delving into examples of rhetorical devices in serious writing rather than assigning presentations.
Professor Caggiano is really helpful and her class can be interesting. I recommend her.
Professor Caggiano is one of the smartest people I have ever met. She teaches you about world problems and critical thinking. Sometimes straying away from the syllabus, she likes to engage in discussions about real world problems. She is one of the few teachers who truly cares about her students and she is also a great teacher. Get on her good side
I truly enjoyed her class; her commitment to her work and her students is quite noticeable. Due to this class, my writing and reading abilities improved, thus improving my work in the film industry.
Professor Caggiano is one of the best teachers any student can take. She explain the assignments thoroughly and is very reasonable. I would recommend anyone whllto take her class!
Solid English class for students transitioning onto college. It's not easy but it's not ridiculously hard. Its a fun informative class to take. You will not regret it.
Professor Caggiano is a great teacher! I took her winter 2014... It was intense! so much homework.. a lot of reading and and writing. We had to write a 6-8 pages research paper and the final was a group presentation. You have to work hard in her class.. I did my best but still got a B.. Very hard A class..
I took Professor Caggiano during the winter. Needless to say,her class was challenging as I had to do a lot of work in a little amount of time. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed her class. She is really intelligent and likes to challenge her students. Like most English teachers, she does talk a lot, but her lectures can be quite engaging. Take her!
Good teacher. I would definitely recommend her for english 1. Love the teaching style keeps the whole class involved. You will have to work hard for that A
Love this woman! But, her class is easy if you don't procrastinate. She assigns reading out of the textbooks, it's not a lot but I didn't read and wish I had. Take her if you're an A student. I'm a B average and found this class a little difficult, but it's not hard if you put ALL of your effort into it.
Great professor and a great class. Not too difficult but still challenging. Attendance is important but she's very willing to work with you if you're having problems. My only complaint would be that during discussions she tends to interrupt before your point can be made and she's slightly condescending.
Amazing teacher. Graded terribly in my course since she redid her syllabus. Very helpful. Responds to emails. Listens to reason when needed. Only wants to see progress. Take good notes. Annotate thoroughly and you'll succeed. Also loves history so take this class before any history/poly sci classes.
Amazing professor. Lots of historical and political readings. Readings were sometimes dense, but mostly interesting and informative. I really enjoyed her lectures and the discussion that would arise from them. She's helpful and consistent. Group project and research paper due by end of semester, definitely get started on both asap. Recommended!
She's great and very smart. Wants you to participate in discussion and hear your opinions. Wants you to think outside the box. Only one big research essay and two in class essays. You will get good grades if you follow her instructions and really try to learn. She's tough but knows how to teach. She is funny and makes the class interesting!!
She's a tough grader but an amazing professor. Everything in the class is clear cut and engaging. My writing improved dramatically in this class. She is always there for you and very friendly. Keep in mind that this class is not IGETC certified, but IMHO its worth taking anyways because of how much your writing improves. (English 2 is a joke.)
Although there is a lot of assignments, this gives you a lot of opportunity to build up your grade. She actually cares about your opinions, and greatly encourages you to talk to her in office hours. People get more out of the class when meeting or emailing her.
She is a overall great professor but she is heavy with workload. If you are a B student in writing do not take her because an A is a sweat of effort. She gives OK feedback but she tends to speak to highly because of course she is a professional. She has a good philosophy of grading but she grades HARD!!
Her class is pretty straight forward. She's very laid back, daily class discussions and they were based on the readings. Had a couple presentations, one group and one pair, and they were pretty simple. Do the journals and essays and you'll do good in the class! Professor is hilarious and sweet!
Prof. Caggiano's advanced composition class has been one of my favorite at SMC. Encourages discussion. The books she assigned were fairly short but full of great writing. We dissected a lot of intricate essays for rhetorical devices, which helped my own essay writing a ton. journal entries are a pain, but you can revise them
Caggiano is an amazing professor who really wants her students to learn something. However, she doesn't grade work for over a month at a time, so if you like knowing what your grade is before the end of the semester, don't take her.
Prof Caggiano is brilliant and my writing drastically improved. Absolutely take her. Her main objective is clearly to help her students improve and succeed. Put in the work, you'll get an A. However, the lectures are very disorganized and she didn't grade the majority of our assignments until the class was over, so I didn't get much feedback.
She was my first college course and I could not have a better teacher. I took her in the summer and she was really helpful when you needed her. She does do blue book essays and a big research paper but breaks it down for you. She's awesome and a cool person to talk to. Depends on the person you are and if you will get along with her.
If you want to develop the foundation of your writing skills that will help you for the rest of your college career, take Prof. Caggiano. What she taught me about reading and taking notes really helped me in all of my other classes as well. Overall, one of the most valuable learning experiences that I had in college.
Professor Caggiano is the best english professor I could have taken. She is truly great if you want to improve your writing. She is a tough grader but she really works with you. She encourages all her students to see her during office hours and is so passionate about what she does. I would definitely take her again!
Soooooo many unnecessary classwork, homework, lectures, and powerpoints which makes the class EXTRA boring because she lectures the entire class time. If you don't do an assignment, your grade goes from an A to a C which sucks. She makes you buy 2 textbooks and after every chapter, she assigns a quiz online and a LONG lecture the day after.
Tons of homework, but didn't give us any feedback the whole semester. Seemed very nice at first, but showed some true colors by the end of the semester. Prof. Caggiano definitely knows what she is teaching, but seems to be too careless to grade all the homework she makes students do.
Assigned a moderate hw/cw amount that required some time investment and were easy to do, however she never graded them after submission and mainly only gave feedback when confronted in person. Thus, assignments felt like they lacked opportunities for personal growth. She seems caring, but that doesn't really translate into well utilized class time.
I got into the class from the waitlist and I am glad I did, she is one of the best professors out there. She really cares about her students, even though I did not perform my best in class, she gave me good feedback whenever I asked. Her assignments are actually inspiring and teaching not only writing English but stuff you can use in your life.
I took her during my first year, she gives really great feedback and genuinely cares about her students. I was really confused and lazy during my first semester that's why I could not give enough focus in her class but she gave me advice and helped me through my first semester. Inspirational classes, you will not regret it just take it.
Professor Caggiano makes an effort to get to know everyone of her students, she is always on time, always accessible outside of class whether it be a skype call or outside of office hour appointment and wants her students to succeed. If this is your first English class I would definitely recommend Professor Caggiano.
Prof. Caggiano's class is an inspiring combo of philosophy, politics, Americanism, and so much more. Go to her class if you genuinely want to learn. She lectures most of the time. 1-2 pages writing assignments after each class. Attendance and in-class participation expected. Follow instructions and be on time, and you'll get A.
Overall I think she's amazing. shes a great teacher and seems like she really cares for her students, she will make you work for your grade though. the class can be a little boring but she gets the information across. You will do group work, but its all for your benefit. mostly all the work she gives is mapped out where you should fail.
You could definitely get an A and still not know how to write well enough for college. If that works for you, enjoy.
in the beginning I found the class to be easy and she seemed very nice, flexible, and understanding UNTIL towards the last weeks of class she truly showed her true colors. I had asked her for help and decided to change my topic for the research paper and she literally said Yikes and didnt think I can handle it. Do not enroll with this lady
This is the WORST professor I have ever had. EVER. She is rude and inconsiderate and she will NOT help you what so ever. She demands attendance and if you do not show you get dropped- regardless of the situation she will not help you succeed. ( even though i had done all my work and had an A) she still dropped me.
Prof. Caggiano was amazing. The class was not the easiest; you definitely need to do your reading, homework, and participation. However, she helps you whenever you need and makes herself available for support. She's open to new ideas and really makes the class a welcoming place. Took her in summer session, definitely would recommend.
Professor Caggiano is a gem. I don't recommend her if you are looking to slack off or avoid work for an easy A. If you care about learning, you will get an A. I had a 98% in this class and rarely felt stressed about the work load. There are a few research journals, then a research paper. Do the journals and the final paper's almost copy paste.
GUYS SHES AMAZING. she's SUPER understanding, super easy to deal with, gets all your problems. If you do her work youre good. Class is so fun, she is an amazing grader. Honestly if you don't take this class you're missing out. Its an amazing class, super fun and an easy A. Do as she says and an A is guaranteed
Professor Caggiano is a great professor with wonderful insight. She is a very intelligent and scholarly instructor and challenges her students to be the best that they can be. A very tough grader, she really makes you work for your grade. Her classes require your full attendance and it will be a lot of work, but it is not impossible.
Professor Caggiano is a gem of a teacher. She is truly passionate about literature and the topics she brings to class, and is upbeat and always interesting. Her online class is easy to understand and presented well.
She respects your point of view so don't be scared to go in a different direction than what is talked about in class. Her teaching style is very interesting and she can get off topic a little but it's fun. Very relaxed and understanding person!
I took her for the winter semester and LOVED her. There was definitely a lot of homework every week, but it wasn't difficult. It got you thinking and forced you to pay attention to rhetoric and all that jazz and there was a lot of writing (discussion posts, 2 mini essays, 1 final essay) but we were given at least a week for each assignment. 110%rec
Professor C waits until the end of the semester to grade all of the biggest assignments, so there's no way to improve or learn from your mistakes. Her grading is confusing and inconsistent, and her assignment prompts are not very straightforward. She is very willing to help, but isn't actually able to provide much assistance or clarification :(
Like easy A's? Not learning? Being spoon-fed? Then this class is NOT for you! However, if you are actually interested in improving and advancing your English skills, Professor Caggiano's classes WILL help you achieve excellence. Why? Because she truly wants and expects her students to learn! If you are looking to transfer after SMC, take her class!
She is such a caring professor, she answers all canvas messages right away. She is so patient with students. She was even able to help me problems I had in a previous class. Her class work is not hard at all. You do two essays from what I recall, super easy as well. All the work you do helps you with your essay.
Professor Caggiano helped me fall in love with English again. I did not expect to have such an amazing experience in her class but I am so grateful I took it. Her class is definitely not an easy A but if you work hard and follow the instructions, you can get an A. Her class changed my perspective on life in its own unique ways.
If you were the kid who stayed up reading under the covers past midnight, I guarantee you'll both enjoy and learn a ton from this course. Prof C fosters a safe place to grow and hone your voice--sure, you may write a few crappy pieces, but that's all part of the process. Rhetorical analysis isn't easy, but Prof C stays invested at every step.
THE BEST! Professor Caggiano will make you fall in love with English. The work is intresting and she doesn't mind opposing opinions. She replies to ALL messages and gives great feeback. Absolutely LOVED her! 100% recommend.
Taken online 2022 and Prof. Caggiano was amazing and very caring. I learned so much in Advanced Composition, and it made me feel much more prepared to transfer to university. She grades realistically, which may seem harsh if your writing skills need work, but she gives great feedback and really wants to see you improve and succeed.
I took her class in Spring 2023. Professor Caggiano was the worst professor I have ever had. As an instructor, she was condescending and inflexible, allowing very little student input into their own work. She does not grade work until the very end of the semester, and is a usually harsh grader for the seemingly low standard that she sets.
TERRIBLE! She doesn't grade anything until after the semester ends. Grading is also completely unclear and you cant see your grade until it appears on your transcript. When messaging her throughout the semester she has a sarcastic and demeaning attitude. I advise you chose any other english teacher, I cant imagine one being worse.
This review is a reflection of her as an instructor, not as a person. As an instructor, she is terrible. She doesn't grade anything until the end of the semester so there's so chance to actually learn. Her pedagogy is dull, outdated, and emphasizes strict adherence over genuine learning. She was condescending and unhelpful. 0/10
Guys she's actually such a bad professor. Do yourself a favor and please don't take a class with her. The reviews speak for themselves.
I took her accelerated course which contributed to it being difficult but as an english teacher its ironic how disappointing her communication skills were. besides that if you find writing papers easy this will probably be an easy class for you but for those who struggle with english classes I don't recommend this course.
Professor Caggiano is a wonderful professor but more importantly, a beautiful soul. She's really helpful and actually cares about her students.
Prof. Caggiano is caring and works hard to put together a course that makes learning to write college-level research papers interesting. She was easily accessible throughout the course and gave clear, helpful, and timely feedback. If you did not take honor's English in high school, I suggest taking Eng 1 over the normal term, NOT the short term!
She is amazing I'm not going to lie, I unfortunately plagiarized and instead of villainizing me she helped me out and gave me another chance for the essay. She was travelling and she still found time to grade and give good feedback. Will be taking ENGL2 with her next semester
Great professor, she clearly cares about her students and want them to succeed in her class. The workload is average for a fast-paced course so as long as you are diligent in assignments, you can definitely earn a good grade.
Please don't listen to the bad reviews, Professor Caggiano is such an amazing professor. She's the one professor that actually cares, everything that she teaches is so well explained and clear for you to understand. I've learned so many things with this class. She's just an amazing professor, I would take her classes over and over again.
Blah and pompous
Waits to grade everything at the end. Gives great feedback though. Seems like a sweet lady.
