Susan is very hard and has extremely high expectations for her students! I am a 3.5 student, who generally gets nothing lower than a B in all classes....I BARELY passed with a low C in her class!! I wouldn't recommend ANYONE to take her class!!!!!!!!!!!!
This professor is very nice and energetic, but she is a very hard grader. I got an A in eng 111, but I am barely passing her class! Though her energy keeps me awake, she grades way too hard.
too hard! too strange!
This teacher is overly and obnoxiously too energetic especially in the morning but she keeps you awake despite the annoyance. She is an extremely hard grader.

A little too tough on grading.
i think her grading scale starts at c and goes from there. no one in our class got above a c. put it this way i got a perfect on all our quizzes and our midterms, but just barely passed her class, b/c of her paper grading.
I had Callender for ENG111 winter quarter '04. She's probably the hardest professor I've had. She's an excellent teacher & I learned a lot from her. I hated how she puts students on the spot during class and I HATED her final.
I had Ms. Callender for my first college English class. SHE IS AN AMAZING TEACHER!!! I learned so much from her class, and it HELPED ME SOOO MUCH throughout my entire college career. Rise to her challenge and you will do well in any class!!!
Let's put it this way for her final exam in ENG 111 i put down 5 written memorized pages. She makes it WAY to hard and not very enjoyable.
Very good English teacher, but I would not recommend her for non-english majors. She did not give out any A's in our class, although she recommended me for the honors program she still gave me a B.
Hardest teacher i've ever had, if you're only taking one course then you'll be okay if you put ALL effort into it. If taking more than one course, stay away or those classes will suffer trying to keep up with hers.
My very first class at Sinclair was Callendar's English 111. It has taken me nearly 3 years to get over the stress she put me through, and finish English 113. I learned a lot, but she uses intimidation and humiliation in her teaching style. Not cool!!!!
she needs to be taught how to teach
Ms Callender was a very energetic teacher indeed. However the way she put people in the spotlight or answered a question made one feel like they are dumb. She would say after a question "cmon now..lets but on our brightest thinking cap" thats something one did in elementary. Still dramatized!:-(
it was terrible. she puts people down and i dont think she means it!! sweet lady.....TOO TOUGH...even thought i like a challenge~~
expects way to much and grades hard
I have always been a great English student, until this class. I don't think she has ever given an 'A' to a student. All she does is criticize until you are red in the face. I dreaded this class and I am so glad it's over. The final was unbelievably hard and I recommend NEVER having her!
Well the class was ok, the teacher was ok, and everything else was OK. She taught me alot, but her kiddish attitude just didn't come off well with anyone in the class. I'm not gonna be one of those people that says do not take her class, but be very cautious. She is pretty tough.
I am a Journalism major and I still scraped by with a 'B' in this class Fall 2003. I am not bitter, rather I despise the fact I was within a decimal point of an A (a 92.4 to be exact). After my experience, I considered changing my major. Someone ought to teach her how to constructively criticize.
good enthusiasm but too hyper and sometimes impatient with students who need to slow down on a few areas.
Ms. Callender was the worse Eng. teacher ever. She was so tough, and another thing that you all do not know about her is... she is the Chairman of the English dept. at Sinclair. She will not expose that about herself. I had to research her, because she gave us all this unnecessary stuff to do.
This was the best teacher Ive ever had. She is difficult but she says WORD FOR WORD what will be on tests. Just take good notes and come to class and you will really benefit. Thanks to her I feel 100% smarter. She a great teacher, and if you work hard you'll have nothing to worry about. Isnt that what college is about? Working hard and learning?
If you want to learn, be challenged, and be prepared for transfer to a 4-year school, take this teacher. If you're looking for an easy "A", avoid her at all costs. I finished with an "A", but really busted my butt getting it.
Requires a lot. While being challenged is great, having too great of expectations is not. A blue-book exam for a 50 minute class? I didn't even finish the whole thing. Can be condescending, though I don't think she means to. Gives off an all-knowing vibe at times. As an ENG 111 class, it was way too difficult.
Someone already said it...I hate the way she would put people in the spotlight and made them feel stupid or unprepared... I felt like I was still in middle school half the time.
Her class is hard, and her volume during lectures is always going up and down making her very difficult to hear.
This lady is one snazzy dresser. She always looks sharp and professional. She take her job seriously.
Now that I'm at UD, I'm glad I took Callender, but she was HARD. But for those who go to transfer to a 4 year college, you'll take what you learn from this class with you when you do the 300-400 level classes. She can be harsh on soft-spoken people because she likes to keep things fast and loud. I pulled off an A, wasn't easy.
She was the WORST teacher I have ever had!!!! If I had known what she was like before signing up for the class I would not have signed up for her class! She is EXTREMELY "happy" all the time, almost like she is high. She acts very childish at times too. Her acting skills SUCK.
I love her teaching methods. She prepares you for your papers and explaings the content of how your papers should be written. She is very enthusiastic about teaching. If she has ever had a bad day you would not ever know it because she is always smiling. The most thing I love about her class is that she challenges you. Students always need a challe
I took her class spring quarter 05. When I told people who I had they urged with me to change but I didn't. I shoulde've changed. Susan is extremly hard and extremly hyper. Her final exam is extremly hard. You pick 3 questions out of 5 and each response has to be 3 pages long. Each question is worth 33 pts. Passed her class with a "C"
I hated her class. She was the worst teacher I have ever had! I dropped her class half way through because i could not take anymore of her. She expects people to all write papers the same way she would. Do not take her if you know what is best for you!
She was very difficult, I don't know why anyone would take her for a second class
I normally don't like to say anything bad about a teacher but unfortunatly Ms. Callender would not be my first choice for an English 111 teacher. If you do extremely well in English and can write a paper with little instruction on the basic format by all means take her, if you don't do well in English reconsider signing up for a class with her.
Hardest Teacher EVER. I was probably the only one who got a B and I worked day and night 4 it. Has very high standards, several dropped the class halfway through. Takes her job seriously, however she still thinks she is teaching middle school. She asks students questions the whole class period with a tone like u speak to a 3 year old, & wont take n
Terrible!!!! run!!!
very enthusiatic and enjoys teaching!
She is the worst teacher I have ever had!! She is very hard, strict and very LOUD!! She went to Havard so what the hell is she teaching at sinclair? Do not take her, take my word she is AWFUL!!!!!
This lady is NUTS!! very loud, very ethusiastic. if you take notes and listen you will do just fine.
The only teacher that I have had and didn't like at Sinclair. She was giving me a C in her class, so I dropped and took another teacher, got a 100% TAKE ANYONE BUT HER!!! SUPER LOUD AND AHHHHH
She is a very interesting person. Papers must be done her way, or no way. Hard to meet her requirements. The book used for this course isn't used in class at all because in her opinion, it's wrong. I wouldn't recommend her.
this professor needs to be checked up. Students should evaluvate her before the end of the quarter because she just gives marks to those she feels should get it and not those who actually merit it.She is partial in her scoring and sometimes does not give the right marks to essays may be an oversight or she simply already in her own head thinks ther
Professor Callender is a great teacher. She does expect you to know what she has talked about. She makes learning fun. I would recommend her to anyone. Take notes and do your assignments and you will do just fine. She has made English fun for me. I have never enjoyed English, but now I understand exactly how to write papers.
She snaps back and forth between sweet and calm to loud and angry in this night-and-day toggle feature that scares the heck out of me. She answers all questions with other questions, and just changes the subject instead of helping you. My roomie and I both got the same impression and bailed. My new teacher is great by comparison.
One of my least favorite professors. She doesn't seem to care very much if you get it or not: she gets it, and that's enough in her book. The entirity of the class was clearly lost most of the time that she was talking, and she either didn't notice or didn't mind. She seems like a nice enough person in some ways, but she's a terrible teacher.
Professor repeatedly accused me of plagiarism without any evidence. She always questioned the sources of information used, which were always fully documented. I believe she graded on the basis that she felt I was plagiarizing but had not way to prove it (could not prove it because I didn't).
I had her for the short five week course for Eng 111. I think she is a wonderful teacher, and really truly cares if her students are comprehending or not. Just take detailed notes, and ask questions after class, and you should be fine. I think it would be very difficult to fail her 111 class if you put any kind of effort into it.
Omg is this lady insane. she goes from being sweet to loud to sweet again. she treats you stupid when you asked questions, and her expectations are completely unrealistic. it's her way or no way, this is the only teacher i've never liked at sinclair.
What a nut. She is pretty difficult, but the worst is her nuttiness! She is quite a character...
I was frightened of this class. She is extremely difficult to follow and puts people on the spot constantly. She is terribly condescending. I would not advise anyone to take her class. It's ridiculous.
She definitely makes you work hard for your grade. She is very energetic. She puts people on the spot and gets upset if you don't know the answer, however she gets really excited when you get something right. She gives you help if you ask.
She is a character. She can be hard. She will put you on the spot, and often. Overall though I think everything she teaches will stick with you because of the way she teaches. If you have her and your having a hard time I suggest using the English Lab for help/suggestions on your work. Ask her questions AFTER CLASS, not during.
This lady is oneof a kind. She is excited one minute and pissed the next. If you can avoid I would strongly recommend doing so. This class was way to hard. If you like english tests and exams this is for you.
Horrible teacher
run while you can. She is the worst teacher I hav ever had. When you ask her question she will not answer them and she treats you like your dumb. You leave her class more confused than before you came in. I would never waste my money on taki8ng her again. She does not teach she just babbles.
She can be hardcore, but she is fair. She is clear about exactly what she wants. If you attend regularly and take good notes you'll be OK. She will answer questions after class. She is smart and can tell if you are not trying. Great teacher learned alot!
She confuses you
She is very loud and spends most of the time picking out students to basically teach the class for her. She is too strict it it very rediculous.I would really recommend that you do not takr her for this class.
Very unfortunate to have had her. It seemed we were trying to learn definitions and remember exactly how to set up things rather than learning how to present a good argument. I was looking forward to the class but was very disappointed. Second worst prof I ever had.
I really liked her. She taught us what certian papers should contain and she tested us on that. the class was hard but she explained things very well.
Susan Callender is obviously an extremely intelligent woman, unfortunately she is the worst English teacher I've ever had. My class started with 30 students and we had three left at the end. I'm the only student who passed, and I received a C, which is the lowest English grade I've ever had. Avoid her if you want your GPA intact.
terrible
She the worst english teacher ever. It might be because she should be retired and in a nursing home she's so old. She also repeats things and forgets what we did in the previous class. When she asks the class what was done in the previous class someone will tell her and then she will; Deny that we did that and say we did something else. Its BAD!
I, unlike most people here, think Mrs. Callender is a great teacher. She keeps you on your toes, thats for sure, but you do LEARN the material, which is the point. She expects you to write college level papers, and as you are in college, I dont think thats much of an issue. My only issue is that she teaches English as if its not a subjective thing.
Very nice lady, horrible teacher! Her teaching style not conducive to learning. I am an "A" English student who had to drop the class so I didn't get an "F". STEER CLEAR OF HER. ABSOLUTELY USELESS WASTE OF TIME!!!!
Has a reputation around school for her attempts at failing students.
she was awful!!! didn't explain anything. treated you like you were dumb...talked down to you...and then graded you like a Harvard honors student! due dates were vague and then thrust in your face at the last minute. run the other way. her class was a nightmare
The worst teacher ive ever had, and thats saying alot considering its at sinclair which has the worst teachers ive ever seen!!!!!!!!!
VERY tough on grading, and good luck trying to comprehend what any of her "notes" she writes on your papers mean. I think she likes to write unnecessary negative things just because she can. I would not recommend her to anyone simply because I feel that she does not teach based on the level of the students-- she teaches based on HER own level. She
Run. Run. Run.
Ms. Callender is all that has been said on this site. 1. Extremely rude and condescending and her expectations are ridiculously demanding. She taught me nothing, and I want my money back. I got three very high A's and her C. my final was a A. If you have financial aid don't take her. 9 out 34 completed her class. She is a hugh detriment to Sinclair
Can not believe Sinclair is not looking into the allegations leveled at her. Does not teach but expounds at every turn. Very rude and not objective at all. Would be interesting to throw her credentilas against the wall and see what actually sticks.
Susan Callender is an amazing teacher. She grades hard and expects you to know the text book definition of any literary term but her class will teach you an abundance on information that will expand you brain.
This class has been ridiculous. She laughs at students when a question is answered and it is not to her standards. I have seen her argue with students about what is the correct answer, and would not let them complete asking their question without interjecting. Ridiculous! Stay away!
I took notes, followed guidelines for my papers, but still failed most of them for ridiculous reasons. Couldnt read most of her comments, what I could read made no sense. Docked points for answers being too detailed!!! Very nice, but yells...puts students on the spot the whole class...not very many people in her class end up surviving the quarter..
She is BY FAR the WORST teacher I have ever had! NOBODY TAKE HER--- even if u have to. There were 33 students in my class at the beginning of the quarter, and dropped to 9. She IS NOT helpful with anything. She has a terrible attiude, and she belittles ALL students. I am so glad to be out of her class!!!
She was born to kill students. I'm not saying that I'm a good writer, but I easily got A on my 111 and 112. But for this class, I worked as hard as possible and still got C's on my paper. I felt scared every time I went to class. Worst of the worst.
I learned so much about writing in this class but it was extremely difficult! You must know the textbook definitions of literary terms and you must follow the guidelines for papers EXACTLY. By the end of the quarter she grows on you but she is scary to begin with. Make sure you devote as much time to homework as possible!
She is not the best teacher to take, if u can avoid her and take someone else
Avoid her if at all possible, never ran into someone who lacks in clarity. I am a 4.0 student who is barely passing what should be an easy class. Lack of direction, clarity, instruction. Can't read her writing, paper comments make no sense, never has time to explain why she graded the way she did. Thankfully this is a short summer course
She's so happy it's intimidating! lol. There's 4 papers, 4 quizzes, and 10 mini in class assignments. LOVED the class for the challenge! If you don't like English or aren't good at it... DO NOT TAKE! She'll even let u rewrite papers if you just ASK!
Oh my gosh, this lady is CRAZY! HA, she runs into class and is just crazy spastic when she talks. It's hilarious most of the time. She is a bit tough, but if you study then it's okay. She does have a strict format procedure, but just follow that and you should be okay. She outlines it all for you, I just follow that and I've gotten B's.
....Crazy. I've never been so confused on what to write a paper about or what she's expecting ..overall I was lost the whole quarter. She will put you on the spot so I would suggest finding another professor
If you want an A in this class I recommend staying away!!!! I am a 4.0 student and I can't even make a B. She seems happy at first, but then she seem really rude and I never am a bad student, but I've had to bite my tongue several time for the way she talked to me. WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD!!!!!!
All I can say is...I had to drop her class in order to get an A with another professor! She was all over the place quizzing us the 1st week! She expects you to know everything she teaching about, and most of all you can not write and use your wording it has to be what she want you to say or how she would like you to state your own personal views...
She demands very specific expectations without being specific in what she wants. Her teach methods are all over the place ("work on paper 4 and then turn in the rough draft for paper 3!") I honestly lost points on a test for not using Roman Numerals. She read a rough draft for my paper, told me it was wrong, and refused to tell me why. Forget her.
NOT RECOMMENDED AT ALL!!! She makes me want to drop out of English!! She thinks everyone is a scholarship student and puts you on the spot and makes you feel stupid.
I truly HATED this class. Inconsistent grading, inconsistent critiques, she assaults you with "GOOD MORNING" every class period. Her hand writing on the papers you get back is illegible. I just BARELY got a B in this class. Put serious effort into paper, get C. Put more effort into next paper get C. Give up on paper 3 get A. ??? AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
She is obnoxious in the worst sense. She is rude. She grades stupidly. Do NOT take this class if you have a choice. She made me want to drop out of school all together.
Nearly every student got ANXIETY ATTACKS when you are seconds from etering her class room. She puts you on the spot and greets you good morning in a fashion that is on par with the training you get at the NAVY SEALS OR BOOT CAMP ON YOUR FIRST DAY.got a D in her class spring 2012 and took the class in 2013 spring with another teacher and got an A
Honestly the worst teacher ever. She failed me for the same assignment I turned in every single time. How do you get a C in english? I'm an A/B student so that tells you something. She is no help at all if you have questions. Do not take this instructor. She made me want to drop out of college all together.
Honestly the worst teacher i've had in my two years at sinclair so far. Do not take this teacher shes not helpful, rude, a nutcase, and most of all you basically have to teach yourself or get ready to be screwed the entire year. Do not take her unless you absolutely have to
This teacher is terrible! I was in advanced writing classes all through high school and earned an easy A in every class, graduated with honors, and still cannot satisfy this teacher! She is rude, ALWAYS has an issue with EVERY assignment that is turned in, and never gives specific ways to help a student improve. AVOID!! DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!!
She comes off as a nice professor who is there to help you but that is all just a cover up for her lack in teaching. She will give you a paper and go over how she wants it done just to make us feel like we have a chance at acing her class but in reality she easily gives c's and d's without explaining why she did it. After 3 months I am dropping her
Not my favorite course , but managed to complete with sanity intact. If you want a challenge for your first English course, step up. Was surprised to learn they are not responsible for course curriculum, they only grade the work. MLA is super critical in this course. Opportunity given to correct unless repeat offender.
Never take her! Please save yourself.
Her grading is absolutly terrible
