Dr. Collins is an absolutely amazing professor. I wouldn't consider her as an easy grader, but she is very fair. She seems to take into consideration any personal matters that may affect your chance of getting an "A" in the course. She's cool!
Collins is okay. She is not the worst and certainly not the best Chem professor. Her class is not easy, but mostly because the material is difficult. To get a good grade, do ALL the homework problems she assigns.
hard class.. C- first time w/o studying... A- second time.... i could have passed the class but i rarely attended class. Dr. Collins is a nice lady but her tests are insanely difficult. Goodluck for those who need CHEM 101 and 102 who have no choice but to take her!
AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS! BEWARE!
Complete and Uder bone head! Has no clue about the subject! Does not have the mental capacity to transfer information from photocopied notes to the board with out messing up royally somewhere inbetween. WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD! Derivations all messed up!I would rather have Dr. Melikiyan teac
TWO WORDS-AVOID HER!

He hasnt taught chem 101 in 10 years and went by old photocopied notes which were wrong!!!! Her class is extremely difficult. She doesnt help you much with anything. I asked her so many questions and she just laughed and told me to look in the book. AVOIDDDD at any cost. This class is not hard and her test are okay, if you study you will be fine
Collins..she's okay. she confused me with a lot of stuff that she messed up on the board. the exams were a bit difficult. it only helped when she had quizzes in discussions and uses those on the tests. but yeah difficult exams. hard grader. not a good enough study guide. study her notes and use book as a reference.
Hard exams. Hard grader. Horrible teacher. 90% of the time her answers to questions are "I dont know, this is not my field." What!? you're teaching 101! Spends most of the class copying her notes on the board and looking at the clock. Avoid her.
I had A SOLID background in chem, so i found he class to be fair and decent.

if you ask her a question to clarify something....she'll say "i dont kno, look it up in the book"....or "i dont kno, its not my specialty"....i guaranteed you that much...and yea...she'll laugh in your face if you dont kno something...
it pays to go to lecture. She tests right off her lectures. Very approachable, i like her a lot as a person.. as a teeacher she's not so bad either... there are much worse teachers in this department... she's in the top 3

She's a good person, but not really a great teacher. Disorganized and sometimes not well versed in the material she's teaching. She is enthusiastic about chemistry though.
she tries very hard in teaching well. wants the students to learn really. take at your own risk. and be prepared for the sloppy notes. but i heard she's getting help from an outstanding o-chem prof. im not telling names. ;) so she's getting organized now. other than that, she's really nice.

dr. collins is very nice and she tries to be helpful but she does not explain very well. her back is turned the whole class time when she lectures, she makes a lot of mistakes and material she says you dont have to study for she puts on the test anyways. she has 3 midterms and 1 final. the tests are pretty hard and you have to work hard to get an A
This class sucks!! Her tests are damn hard and she laughs when the class does terrible. She has her favorite students (the ones who have taken this course before). You can't miss class bc she teaches different material from the textbook. DONT BUY THE BOOK!! Avoid her! If you have to take her... Good Luck!
does not make things clear at all. will not wait for anyone to catch up, just moves on and does not answer questions adequetly. tests are impossible to finish within the 50 minutes given and usually have a class average of 45%
if you want to GPA goes down take her.God help you because she is the only one who is teaching this class.
Not a good teacher at all. does not explain things clearly, makes so many mistakes talking about stuff and just laughs about it, gives me a headache all the time trying to understand what she's talking about. I took chem 101 and got an A, took her chem 102 and failed it, thats how bad she is. Just stay away from her, stay away.
She is the worst teacher I have ever had. Not only does she not care about the students, she laughs at us. Also, a horrible grader, if she doesn't like you she'll basically fail you. DO NOT TAKE HER.
She is not a mean person. She's actually quite personable. However, she is a terrible teacher. She gives absolutely no explanation of the material being "taught". She expects you to just figure out what the calculations mean. Her lectures are totally incomprehensible, and if you don't understand something it's your problem not hers. S
she is very good professor and not hard at all compare to other chem professors. if you go to calss and take note well, then you will get excellent grade!so, take her class. you know that chem is not an easy material. BE WISE!!
This class was hell. You always think you know what your doing then comes the test and your lost. I worked really hard in this class to show her that Im improving but she doesnt care. I improved on every test but she wont look at that she just looks at scores. theres 3 tests and 1 final so if you do bad then your screwed.
horrible teacher!!!!! does not explain anything and expects you to know it on the tests. . . all she does is gives examples (which are not even close to whats on the test). . . on top of that, she grades very unfairly. . . seems as if she has no passion for teaching. . . AVOID AT ALL COSTS
nice lady, HORRIBLE teacher. chem is difficult as it is, try to find a professor who knows how to teach it well.
avoid at all costs
one of the best chem professor i have taken. makes chem easy.don't listen to the other comments. she's great. Pulse she gives partial credit on exams.
WORST TEACHER EVER...SHE CAN NOT TEACH AT ALL...SHE GETS MAD WHEN ASK HER A QUESTION...HER NOTES ARE USELESS...IN FACT SHE'S USELESS...PEOPLE ARE CHEATING IN FRONT OF HER EYES AND DOES NOTHING TO STOP IT CAUSE SHE HAS HER FAVORITES...CSUN HAS TO DO SOMETHING AND HIRE SOMEONE ELSE TO TEACH THIS CLASS CAUSE PEOPLE WHO HAVE TO TAKE PCHEM ARE STUCK...
I had her for my lab. She is a great teacher. Very nice and funny. She was also helpful and pretty easy. Great professor.
I just took the hardest final ever imagined. 15 pages with 13 questions (not including 2-3 subdivision questions for each question). It took the majority of the class 2 1/2 hours to finish the final, the scheduled hours for testing is 2 hours tops, we had to use our 30 minute break between finals to finish the test (if you were able to finish)
she has some weird retarded way of doing her sig. figs., it doesn't follow the book at all.
Very easy, most of her test questions followed exactly what she gave in lecture or discussion. She gives points way on tests and quizes. She does make mistakes in class (like miss writting a formula) but she is only human, a bit more than most. But if you put work into her class you will get a good grade!
Dr. Collins is a nice person but not a good teacher. All other comments sum it up. You can get decent grades if you read the book (so you can understand what she meant in class) and study hard. She is very helpful and nice, but makes a lot of mistakes and is using the same lecture notes from the 1980s with the same mistakes still on them!
I don't know what people are complaining about, she is the best chem professor we have on campus. She gives partial credit (and shes very lenient with it) and she's always there to help.
The class is fair. If you do your work you will get the grade you deserve. She hardly uses the textbook, most of the time she uses her notes for lecture. The test isn't that bad if you go over the notes and books. I'm planning to take her again in 102.
The course isn't easy. She is extremely help full. She does give extra points in the test. You must have really good notes and go over the samples in the book and ask questions during office hours. You lear a lot of things and you make a good friend in the teacher.
Collins is very knowledgable on the subject, just not very good at conveying her knowledge to students
Collins is honestly the most useless teacher at CSUN.The final is nothing like what she tells you to study. She walked out on our final review and she is horrible. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!
The first time i took her, i hated her. The second time around, it was much easier and understandable. So, its really the subject itself thats difficult. The key to passing her class- study the notes thoroughly...tests and quizzes are based on it. overall,a pretty reasonable professor. not as mean as people say. You get the grade you deserve.
DO NOT TAKE!! please do not hurt yourself by taking this class. she should not be teaching anywhere. she cannot explain, instead she says ask a classmate who 'gets it'. you will not learn anything from her. if you already know chem 102 really well, still don't take this class! she is mean as well!
She's very nice and will do everything she can to help you get a good grade. To do well on her exams you need to do the problems over and over again until you really understand them.If anyone complains it's because they did not put in the time to do well.Ask for help when you need it and go to her office hours and you will do well in her class.
At first I hated her, I still don't think she is that great of a professor, but she is nowhere near at bad as I thought. Looking back, I just did not know how to study for her class. Not only that but the subject is hard to begin with, that is not her fault but she does not make it easy for you. The mistake I made was studying the book more than
took her for summer 101. very solid teacher. knows material, always ready to answer questions, great style of teaching (each point has 1 or 2 examples to show what she wants), her review tells u what is needed for exams, and above all else she'll smile and crack a joke here and there. class is recommended
Very good professor. If you do your work and follow through her group activities you will pass. She is helpful when you approach her, especially if you are concerned about your grade. You just have to know your material inside and out. She can get challenging.
This proffesor is nice as a person the semester that I took her. Her style of teaching is very hard. She goes completly beyond the book, and she gives very few examples of the questions she ask for her test. Her test are very confusing and not clear. And her expectations are very high. I do admit she knows alto but be worned it comes at a price.
Collins is a nice person, but thats not what you need going into chem she can't teach, If you wanna learn you have to learn alone with the book, in the class she writes on the board and stand in front of it as she is writing and talking so you don't really know what's going on her notes are old, and she knows her tests have nothing to do with notes
She is a very nice person, and she is very straightforward when it comes to lecture. Whatever she explains will be on the exam. She is all about straight up calculations. Follow her notes and examples and you will be set! Very helpful after class. Don't rely on the book too much-only to clarify a concept/formula. The exams are based on her NOTES!
The notes matched the exams exactly. Grade is based off exams. Main thing in this class is to practice the math. The problems mimic the examples of the notes. She's also a great teacher. Straightforward, helpful, knowledgeable, sane. All good things. Just relax, practice (don't procrastinate), and try. And don't forget your calculator...
Anyone who gives this professor a low grade, either didnt attend class or went out of their way to not pay attention. Her notes on the bored are very clear. Almost 90% of the questions in discussion are on the test(dif.#s).Most test questions were example problems right from the textbook. She couldnt be more striehgt forward.Taking her again for 102
I see a lot of mixed reviews. The problem with so many students failing her class is 1) chemistry is hard 2)they dont read the material and study at home prior to coming to class. You can't just show up and expect to learn. You have to read the chapters beforehand so u know what she's talking about.
took both 101 and 102 with her. 101 was extremely easy - barely opened the book. 102 was much harder, had to reference the book. She does make mistakes, which is the number one complaint among students, but I would take her again, no question. She is extremely fair with tests and grading, and will help you if you approach her. Highly recommend.
Her final was VERY reasonable so do what she says for prep. She does want her students to succeed and is caring. Go to OH to say hello and talk chem. 102 is much harder than 101. Notes are #1 source of info; text is more for backup and background support. It was very hard to keep up since she used whiteboard lect, but will be switching to slides.
Very helpful out of the classroom.Very knowledgeable. I wish I could take her for Chem 102. Took summer Chem 101 from her and she went real fast. main thing is to just copy EVERYTHING down, stay awake, and figure it out out of class.
Her tests are based on her lecture notes and discussions.
her class was straight forward. her test questions are based on notes and activities done in discussion. there is no homework but she does assign some problems from the book for extra practice. honestly you need to practice everyday in order to understand anything & receive a decent grade. She gives partial credit on exams & there are quizzes.
Dr. Collins is a pretty good teacher. He seems to have lost her interest in teaching though. She's gone through some rough patches in her life recently so I suppose it's understandable. Her tests are difficult, no question about that. Go to lecture and discussion and you should do fine... Practice, practice, practice the word problems! Good luck!!!
AVOID!. her exams are tough, have errors, and sometimes have material that was not covered or tricky. final exam was a nightmare. just do yourself a favor and take someone else. i passed the class but not without alot of dedication. She also cancels class and expects you to know the material for the exam! i kinda think shes out to get her students
Do not take her. She just doesn't care about anything.
AVOID! She honestly dreads this course and you can tell. Writes her own exams about stuff that was not even though on. Really confusing. Only thing that makes senses are her group discussions. Avoid her, but if you're forced to take her.. WATCH YOUTUBE VIDEOS of the subject instead of going to her lectures.
I love Dr. Collins!!!! Take her for lab!!! The best chem 102L instructor! super helpful, funny, and witty.
She is such a nice professor....she does teach a little weird but honestly everything is pretty clear...she is very random and might side track a little during lecture. She does know what she is talking about and he lecture isn't boring at all. I would recommend her
She is the BEST. Wan to know how to get a good grade? Show up to EVERY lecture and practice doing her examples she presents in LECTURE. IT IS NO ROCKET SCIENCE. Practice problems from her notes in lecture over and over and you're guaranteed at least a B. There's no textbook needed which is awesome. People are stupid for not going to lecture!!!!!!!!
so awesome!
Great Professor. For having no prior experience in chem, she makes sure students understand the concepts and is open to questions in class. Tests are hard but it reflects her lecture and book so stay on top and you'll do fine.
She knows the subject but most students have no idea what she's teaching. she rushes on everything, does thousands of examples, but not one is explain clearly. it was a waste for me to go to every lecture,i hardly learned anything. She needs to find a new teaching technique, no wonder many students fail her class, unless ur super smart.
Prof Collins is great. She is helpful if u go talk 2her, &is really sweet. has notes that do have errors, but she points them out & She does examples on the board so make sure you r paying attention. U rn't required 2 use the book but if u do the practice problems she give you, the test are easy. Love her. Taking her for 102. Grade = time put in.
Nice teacher, very straight foward, you must attend class to pass this class unless you are a genius. At first she does not seem energetic, but after you get to know her she's not that bad. Any question you ask she will answer in discussion or in class.
Professor Collins is a very wonderful person, but she isn't the best 101 instructor. She often appeared bored with the lectures and during her examples she breezes through without actually explaining and teaching. I'd strongly recommend tutoring for this class and doing examples from the textbook.
i thought she was a great professor. yes her lectures are fast paced and most of the time i did get lost in what she was saying but thats what notes are for. take really good notes, study from the group activities from discussion and read if you need to from the textbook and you should do fine.
Chem is not my best subject, but she made it bearable. If you plan on taking Chem102 buy this book instead 0321651782. Also I found her discussions pointless. All you do is complete a worksheet that she doesn't collect and then she posts the step by step solutions online after. It was pointless to attend discussion. All in all it was a decent class
I hate chemistry, but she can explain things to you to make you understand. If you have questions, ASK. The examples you do in lecture will be similar on the exams, but you still need to study to pull off an A.
No powerpoint lecture notes provided on moodle so you have to go to class. Lectures are fast paced and she often makes mistakes. She's helpful if you ask her questions. Exams are based on similar questions found on the quizzes, problems done in class and in the course textbook.
Grades however she feels like. Many people in the class are repeats. Makes many major mistakes when lecturing. Loses exams.
I liked her teaching style so much I took her for 101 and 102. Her tests are based off of what's covered in lecture and discussion. Don't miss lecture because she shows step by step instructions on how to solve problems. I had to work hard in her classes, but it paid off.
She makes a lot of mistakes but corrects herself along the way. Her tests aren't that bad as long as you study and know your stuff. Attending lecture and discussion is highly recomended or you'll be lost the whole semester. Reading the book and doing the practice problems she assigns is the key to success in this class. She's great :)
As a repeating student, Professor Collins is a good teacher that really knows chemistry very well. She is a fair grader, and has three exams, a final, and quizzes which are all easy. Sometimes she is not clear during lecture, but she does help you a lot, and wants you to succeed.
No homework. Online quizzes. 3 exams. Exams look similar to lecture, homework and discussion questions. Write good notes and study. She is good teacher but makes a lot of mistakes. I learned pretty well in her class as oppose to other chemistry courses.
chemistry is hard no matter who you take it with. it's super important that you take really good notes in her class. shes open to questions and she has office hours. if you're willing to work hard you'll do fine.
Doesn't honor her own syllabus. Changes due dates, exam dates last minute. Our class spent 4 months on the first chapter, and finished the last 3 chapters in 3 days. The final exam was only those 3 chapters... I would rather take an extra semester at CSUN than take her.
I got an A in the Chem101 class during summer, but let me tell you it wasn't easy. She started off with Chem 100 review, which is normal, then went on teaching us OChem for the first exam. She goes way too fast and doesn't explain, its like she's reviewing it for herself, not teaching the class. To pass this class you have to actually study
She is good. Take her and close you eyes. Easy A class.
Dr. Collins is the best! I wish I could take her for the rest of my science classes! She is really nice and her class is a fair class that is actually based on the things we cover in class unlike other professors. 3 exams, 3 quizzes and a final. Chem 102 is tough in general, do problems over and over from lecture and discussion to prep for exams.
One of the best professors at CSUN! Had her for 101 & 102. Dr. Collins' lectures are easy to follow and she wants to make sure you understand. Very approachable and hilarious, ask questions! NEVER used the book, just review lectures and do the problems from class and discussion over and over and you'll do great. Take her you won't regret it
She goes WAY too fast. She gives a list of topics for you to study for a test, and she doesn't ever go over these specifically. Her notes on Canvas are general and not specific. It's a boring lecture. I missed one class and lost a ton of information so it is indeed important for you to attend.
honestly just learn how to do the groupwork worksheets. there's not much in the grade book. lectures a lot and really fast. the final was so hard and unlike her tests. there was a question worth 60 points (had multiple parts to it) on the final. not the worst, but i wouldnt recommend
She was horrible. She just read her lectures not giving examples and never answering questions. she was very impatient and rude. I studied day and night for her exams and they were still ridiculously hard. I didn't pass but the person in my class that cheated on the final got to retake the final and passed.
She is not a very good professor. She mentioned that shes retiring and must be the reason why she started to slack off. While teaching she tends to mess up and students would correct her. Her tests and quizzes are ridiculously hard and nothing like what she taught. Answer sheets she provided had a lot of mistakes. DO NOT TAKE HER CHEM CLASS!
She is not a good professor. She lectures from the powerpoint that she printed and just writes it on the board. I had to learn the material by reading and doing problems from the book. Her midterms problem was similar to the book. She said she is retiring but if she is still teaching don't take her.
Dr. Collins is a great professor who is retiring. Many of her students gave her awful reviews because they are salty about the fact that they didn't care enough about her grade in order to do well on exams. She provides practice problems on canvas but in order to be ready for the exams who have to be able to do the problems in back of the book.

I took her chem 101 class over summer and the grade was based on 3 exams and 3 quizzes. her lectures can get a little boring but all of her exam questions were from the examples in her notes. as long as you practice her notes and discussion worksheets you will pass. highly recommend her!
Dr. Collins is very kind if you take the time to talk to her. Her lectures are sometimes hard to follow because she moves very quickly. Make sure you study and do practice problems from the book. She is actually very generous with her grading. However, her tests are difficult. Practice the group works she gives to you in discussion. Go to class!!!
Hilarious. She lectures exactly what is going to be on quizzes ans exams. Do handouts, try to connect them to lecture and you'll be ready for anything.
Collins is generous with gradings but her test are hard, lectures r fast, you must work hard for an A. Tests r based on lecture notes, worksheets but she threw tricky questions and thats the sad part. 50% for D-, 64% for C-, 76% for B-, 88% for B-. No study guide, she just list exam topics thats when u feel lost bc u don't know what to study.
Study, Study, Study! She doesn't give study guides, just a list of topics for exams. Practice her worksheets from discussion and problems from the textbook. She goes quickly during lectures and makes mistakes. It will be helpful if you read the book before going to her lectures.
Collins is AMAZING. best chemistry professor at csun. she is the reason why I love chem 102. she makes everything so CLEAR. she is very friendly outside of class and is very helpful during office hours. sit in the front and write down every single thing she writes on the board and go home and actually understand the material rather than memorizing
If you take her expect to teach yourself a lot because she makes many mistakes on her work and if you bring it up in class she sometimes does not even correct it cuz it "wastes time". Study the discussion sheets and you should be good for the exams. Sometimes lenient on grading so that's good. She's doable but will be annoying at times
Dr,Collins seems to have lost her touch from previous years responses. Collins is disorganized spending too much time on some sections and rushing through others without really taking any breaks to explain. It's non stop note taking from start of class to finish. Hopefully she actually retires this year.
She basically reads out loud the problems and topics as she writes on the board from her notebook. Doesn't explain with detail because "there is no time", so you would have to learn it in your own time. Note taking from start to finish with no interruptions. The discussion section was more helpful given you work in groups and help each other out.
You basically have to teach yourself in her class. She skipped some material, because either she didnt want to teach it or there wasn't enough time during the semester. She does NOT give out a formula sheet for the exams or final. Shes disorganized and makes constant mistakes as she writes her notes on the board.
She literally talks to the board while writing the problem, doesn't give much details and expects us to keep us with her. She always makes mistakes and every time we had a test or quiz I had to self teach my myself on youtube. Thank god for youtube. Dont take her unless you wanna self teach yourself
This is the first class I have ever failed in my life. Makes tons of mistakes in classes, very unaccommodating to students, cancels class and office hours for personal time (going to concerts, out to lunch) frequently, and just doesn't care. Everyone who passed the class cheated on her final and had their phones out.
Awful experience. The lectures are so long, but not useful at all. The grade is only based on tests. So bad for your grades because if you mess up one test you mess up your whole grade. she did not even think how students are struggling during the pandemic. Most of the class failed the final. I never failed anything and I am a straight A student
she really doesnt lecture good at all they are just boring and long and useless you don't learn how or why she just does a bunch of boring problems on the board and talks to her self, didn't give a crap that there was a diaristic change in the world yet made the class harder. We couldn't go back and forth to check our answers on quizzes / exams
Her class is VERY lecture heavy and all she does is read off her powerpoints and copy work from a piece of paper. With switching to online classes, her exams were extremely difficult. Her study guides are just a list of general topics and you couldn't go back and forth between questions on the exam. No extra credit.
Lectures the board more than her class; the entire semester consisted of me teaching myself the material. Definitely not a class I would take again unless I absolutely had to.
you teach yourself basically, she cant teach, reads off power point & goes on & on & on about topics that wont even be on the test. Based off 3 tests, lectures are boring & a waste of time, towards the end of the semester I gave up & taught myself thru YouTube. Csun chemistry department has horrible professors !
She doesn't assign any homework or extra credit so good luck on her tests and quizzes, which, most of the time, have the wrong answers. There have been several occasions where the class will literally fail the exam and then we realize it's because she did the question wrong. She is also not understanding and will not work with you. the worst imo.
I came into the class thinking this was going to be like Chem 100, but I was wrong. The first exams should be easy if you have a solid understanding of Chem 100, but I recommend anyone taking this course not slack on her lecture videos. Most of the things on her exams are solely based on her lecture videos, so be mindful of that.
She goes through things very quickly, only reason I did not fail was because my Chem 100 professor was helpful and I remembered the things she taught me that helped me in the beginning of Chem 101. Your grade is based on only tests and quizzes so if you fail the tests, you fail the class.
