If you are a History major, this class is recommended, but it really should be required. This is a great class, the materials and discussions are interesting and relevant, and it will make doing research for your 499 paper *much* easier.
The lectures were terrible (long and disorganized), the essay tests were graded extremely hard for it being a 100 level class, and overall the class is boring and hard.
she is one of those really good teachers who want you to do well by pushing you really hard. Some people might not like the class for that but if you need to improve on your writting skills I would recomend this class.
When I registered for History 113, I assumed I was taking a history class... turns out Dr. Costanzo has turned it into an English class (in which you read about history)... !!!
She grades as though we are in a 400 level class, but she does really know what she is talking about. The essay tests are really hard. If you are not going to be a history major and just need a humanities GUR, don't take this class - it is not worth it.
Dry, boring lectures. Unreal expectations for reading load and paper quality far exceeded a 4 credit class. Avoid at all costs.
Wow. Very hard class. It is worth it though, she has a lot of enthusiasm. Don't miss a single day of lecture, it will kick your ass. Discussions were the best in college so far. Yes, essays are hard, but they push you far. Challenging, but great.
stay away if u can... she is extremely tough for a 100-level teacher- doesn't help much either

She grades way to hard for a 100 level class. Her lectures however were fairly clear and organized.
She was an awful teacher. Stay away if you can
This class is hard. No question. But it is more than worth it. If you think it is impossible, you simply aren't trying hard enough.
She's very intelligent, but very anal about her papers.
A very good class, should be demanded for ALL history majors. Hard grader, very hard, but worthwhile. You learn what she wants to see and your grade will improve. She means well and is willing to help, but you must go out of your way to see her.
People who complain about this class weren't made for college. This is the best example of what a college level course should be. The essays were tough, but if you go in and talk to her she is more than willing to help out and give advice. People are just lazy at Western. I say take it.
I like her class, hate her politics though she does her best to hide them. a good challenge, but she grades essays really hard for a 113 class. i give her a thumbs up, even if she doesnt like republicans!
NOT hard!! I don't know what everyone is complaining about. I did all the work the night before it was due and never got below a B+. And trust me... I'm not that smart. Just make sure you don't B.S. in your papers. Have a clear thesis and make sure every sentence is relevant and supported by "evidence". That's it. Not cake, but NOT that hard.
UNCLEAR about how she grades, as well has what she wants. It seemed, although I will give her the benefit of the doubt and say it's a coincedence, as though the students she obviously enjoyed in class did better than someone who produced a similar paper in quality.
Costanzo will make you a better writer, she is unbelivably helpful and willing to meet during the writing process. Her knowlege and passion for her subject mater is phenomonal. I hope to take many more classes from her in the future.
First off...She is NOT going to make you a better writer, nor is she herself a good writer. She likes to seem more difficult than she is. Don't disagree with her, she won't like you. She knows her stuff but doesn't know how to present it well. Scatter brained is the best description of this professor.
bloody hard, hard to get below or above a C

Dr. Costanzo is definitely not for everyone, because she does expect quite a lot from students. However, she is more than willing to sit down and help students through the process of writing papers. Her lectures could diverge from what's in the book more often, but her pace is good.
Not an easy class, but it really is helping me learn to write in a different way. She makes the lectures interesting, too.
I had her for history 112. You dont have any tests they are all papers but she grades them like shes an english teacher. The lectures are just her talking and you vigorusly writting! Your hand will hurt. She expects way too much of the papers and helps you very little in classes or even talks about them you have to go and you have to go to her.
If you're like me and find that class discussions are typically unhelpful and dominated by shameless self-promoters, many of these classes will be painful for you as they certianly were for me. But Costanzo's lectures are coherent, her expectations are clear, and her high standards will force you to become an intentional and thoughtful writer.
This is a good example of a true college class. Her lectures are VERY organized and easy to follow. She really wants you to understand the material and is available for help when you need it. I wrote all of my papers the night before and never got lower than a B, just follow the instructions on the handouts, take good notes, and you'll do fine.
though she is tough she is good. I took my first paper to her and she told me i did'nt know how to write one but i ended up with an A. If you put some elbow grease into the class she is willing to help.
Worst prof ever!! She is very opinionated and believes her way of writing papers is the only way. Unclear in class, and addes little facts that are unappropriate...don't take this prof if you can help it! HARSH, HARSH grader, boring lectures, terriable class...
Umm giver her some ritalin, she reminds me of the cat lady off of the Simpsons. Very ummm all over the place. Knows her stuff but focuses more on writing skills than history itself. You learn to write way better but it comes at a price, super picky on exams but they were take home so make sure you have a few good friends to help edit your writings
Costanzo is a truly dedicated Professor. She is hard but she is helpful and truly cares about making her students learn. She wants you to know how to write a historical essay. She is an entertaining lecturer and she knows her subject well.
Great Prof. Her lectures are clearly defined and well presented. She knows what she's talking about. Attendance is not mandatory but sometimes she gives extra credit if you just show up.
Costanzo doesnt mess around, but you will learn the material without too much trouble, and she is a good lecturer. I really liked her class
lectures are FULL of info, she seems to jump around alot and is not always clear. anything you say or do in this class remember that you MUST CITE EVIDENCE. she can be helpful at times...just ask questions and dont contradict her , you will not be on her good side after that
If you are in your freshman year with minimal interest in history- stay away. She is quite tough. Otherwise, proceed with caution. She is picky, but not impossible by any means.
She is one tough cookie. Her class is hard, she is a stickler for my worst attribute, spelling. VERY interesting topics, class was fast paced and intense.
it is sooooo hard to please her on papers. i've never gotten less than a solid A on an essay and she keeps feeding me an 81. the essay grades and crazy!
She is tough especially on grading the papers. I worked my butt off in this class but as long as you do, you should be fine. Attendance isnt mandatory but she does give extra credit. i never liked history but this class ended up being alright. :) take it if you're up for a challenge!
Highly recommend for those interested in history. Papers are graded very closely but she does provide a lot of feedback and is very helpful if you go talk to her. Very nice and knows a lot about her subjects
Costanzo is fun. And hard. But not too hard! For 398 we had 2-3 page papers answering the same questions every week about different types of primary sources. Talk in class and do the reading. She is a great teacher. I recommend 398 regardless of the teacher cuz you get a very prof. 499 proposal out of it.
Fear the dragon.
If you're not into reading then don't take this class. It's very helpful to go and talk to her about papers. She remembers who sought her help. It is a challenging class but you learn a ton from her. She knows what she's talking about and if you seek her help you will do fine!!! I'v taken 3 of her classes
I LOVE HERRRR!! she's prob one of my favorite professors! she knows her stuff and spits a lot at you during lecture. It's essential to go to class b/c she doesn't post anything on BB. She is EXTREMELY helpful and provides lots of feedback on papers. She's a tough grader but it's for the best! I DEF recommend her to anyone!
LOVE this class! it's small and very helpful! I learned to be super analytical of lots of different sources which will definitely help me for my 499. It's definitely a lot of work but it's worth it! you see a goofy and more fun side of costanzo which is fun. She's super helpful and gives lots of feedback. TAKE THIS CLASS if you're TAking 499!
Writing an acceptable essay for her is impossible. So if you are not a fan of writing or you dont love history, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. There is only one test and it is to name the counties (and their capitols) of Europe. Other than that, you have 3 essays and 6 books to read (not including chapter reading that you do not have to do).
she is an awesome prof, but a tough grader on essays!
Costanzo is a very tough grader. Very strong emphasis on the importance of analyzing sources. Lectures alright, usu. from whats in the textbook, but on certain subjects is very good. Her limitations on certain aspects of Rus history are evident by mistakes and unanswered questions in lecture. Overall an average prof who gets done whats needed.
Horrible. Course was supposed to be a survey of Western civ 1756-present, ended up being solely on the economic/social classes of the era--NO BACKGROUND. TA was so useless, and graded like she didn't read your work. Professor made mean comments on occasion. I regret this course :o( I worked so hard, and it wasn't even what I wanted to learn! AVOID.
One of the hardest professors. Very picky when it comes to papers and discussions. I thought I would have enjoyed the class more, but felt I just learned more out of the textbook than from the teacher. Going to office hours did not help me either. Generally, an A or B student in history, and this class did not meet my expectations.
Costanzo has difficult classes and expects the best. Do not take her classes if you want an easy grade. There will be reading, taking of notes at lecture, close analysis of sources and strong writing skills required. Don't bother if you won't come to class or put effort into these papers. She is not a pushover. But it is highly rewarding.
Professor Costanzo can seen harsh at times, but it is only to make her students think critically. Take this class and be ready to read A LOT.
Definitely a tough grader, and I wasn't always sure what was expected on papers so my grades varied. When I went in for help on the final though she spent a lot of time helping me through it, and I think just talking to her boosted that final grade. She expects CRITICAL analysis and will really push you for the better.
Worst class I've ever had. Her syllabus is confusing, she doesn't stick to deadlines, and her lectures are so dry. The worst part was she made students feel stupid for asking questions and many times blamed us for her lectures being behind, even though she got off topic. Do not take this professor if you like teachers who are professional.
Costanzo is very passionate about history but her class is terrible. Her lectures are so dry and boring and are hard to sit through. She doesn't use slides and only lectures off of an outline. Writing an "A" paper for her was almost impossible. Avoid taking her class. I loved history and she ruined it for me.
I've taken multiple classes with Professor Costanzo and I honestly have enjoyed every one. She is a difficult professor but class is usually entertaining and she pushes you to be a better student and a better writer. I would highly recommend her classes to someone who is interested in becoming a history major. I would not take it for an easy GUR.
Professor Costanzo is one of the best professors I've met. She puts a lot of effort into her lectures and assigns readings that are really interesting. She gives a lot of feedback on essays and will try to make you a better writer. She teaches history from multiple perspectives, including women's history and the people's history. She is also funny.
Great teacher! She is so enthusiastic and gets in the zone when it comes to lectures! Every day is a lecture day so make sure to always have paper and a pencil! Notes are very important in the class! For essays and workshops it is always good to look back on notes and remember to read! She is so helpful and I never found any of her talks boring.
I am a junior and honestly this has been one of the most engaging classes I've ever taken at WWU. This period in history is extremely important and has tons of relevance to today. Costanzo will make you work for it but THAT IS WHY YOU ARE IN COLLEGE. Workload- 3 papers and in-class group workshops will turn you into a THESIS WRITING MACHINE.
She's really great. I had her for a film class but the few type of lectures we had they were great. Stays on schedule and is very helpful for office hours. She's a little tougher in grading and really makes you think. Heavy on class participation but I never felt attacked by her. She knows her stuff and really makes you look at history differently.
I don't think she is a horrible teacher or a bad person, but I have never had a teacher with such outright hostility towards some students. She gives no one the benefit of the doubt, and if someone asks her to clarify an ambiguous statement on her part, she treats the student really condescendingly, and reads into their question much more.
Her lectures are sometimes dry, but at times to time she is funny and makes the class fun to participate in. She is a tough grader on essays, but if you get the papers proofread then you'll do good in her class.
I thought Susan was a good prof but he class is very lecture heavy. There are no tests for this class, only 3 essays. The essays are extremely reliant on lecture notes and the readings if you want to do well. The class is pretty standard, but Susan is a pretty tough grader on the essays and workshops.
Not a bad person, but condescending nature gets old fast. Be careful when califying her vague statements, she is hostile to students. She will find an issue with all you do, but DO NOT reciprocate this. Correcting her incorrect facts will make her very angry. Get ready for group projects, others wont read the material and you will be forced to work
her lectures are long and boring, she often says to trust her word or to read the text book when a student asks for my detail on a subject. She makes students feel bad for also wanting to correct her or finding their own information
This teacher is absolutely abhorrent. I've never encountered such a smug and disrespectful professor in my entire life. She uses her own biases while grading student work and does little cheap tricks to take points, like assigning a map quiz and then giving us a map that is completely cluttered and illegible. She's also condescending. Terrible.
Easily the worst professor I have ever had. She does all that she can to take points but very little to help students. There are an ungodly amount of reading assignments for a GUR and she is critical of student questions. Her exam essays are also difficult to write and meticulously graded. Recommend avoiding at all cost.
She makes things that are inherently meant to be a conversation with different opinions into a one-path one-way my-way opinion.
Professor Costanzo is, by far, one of my favourite profs at Western. She is passionate and her classes are always interesting and funny. Im not sure why her rating is so low, because Ive never had such an engaging professor here. There are a lot of readings and essays, but it is by no means unmanageable. If you like history, TAKE HER CLASS!!!!
Top notch educator. A lot of students are afraid of her because she is a tough grader, but she pushes her students to be the best they can be. She makes you work hard, and you can't get away with not coming to class prepared. If you reach out to her, she will always meet with you and really help you. She made me a better researcher and writer.
Susan Costanzo is not a good Hist 113 prof. She lectures about twice a week and the other days you will do a "workshop" where you write paragraphs with other students the entire class and it is impossible to get an A on them. I went to office hours for help on a paper and she did not help at all. Do not take this course if you don't have to!
She is more interested in irritating students than cultivating healthy discourse. Not everyone has laptops, so those who do are forced to do all the writing during in class assignments. Hates the five paragraph structure for essays, but refuses to give a specific alternative. Won't post ppts online, and lectures are dull. The map quiz is worthless.
Dr. Costanzo has a harsh personality, and unclear expectations. Her lectures are dense and yet I do not feel like I learned anything. The one time I went to her office hours she was really rude to me for no reason. She is the only Russia expert at the school so take her if you want but I really regret wasting a class on her.
While Prof. Costanzo can be a bit intimidating, once you approach her for help she does her best to provide multiple points of view. She made me challenge my personal bias in discussions, and helped me improve my essay-writing with specific feedback. She treats you with respect as much as you do her. Work hard to earn good grades, and she'll help.
Professor Costanzo is one of the rudest professors I have ever had. It's almost impossible to get an A in her class and the map quiz is horrendous. DO NOT take a class with her if you don't need to
When taking her class I thought it would be enjoyable but it turns to be mediocre at best. The horrible country/capital quiz with being a tough grader. The useless docs she puts on canvas. if she doesn't like when we use speeches in your papers, then why did you post them on there. At least she really knows her stuff about European History.
I hated every second of this course. Susan made me feel really uncomfortable. Her teaching is almost aggressive, Whenever I answered a question it was never the right answer. Because I hardly went to class (horrible anxiety) Susan hated me, she never gave me an ok grade on papers, all my comments were very sarcastic. So unprofessional.
It was difficult conceptualizing lectures into essays, and I felt uncomfortable with what few things were meticulously graded. However, I appreciated and benefitted from the professors feedback. They provided clear instruction and drew out strengths and weak points in written work that improved my writing. And the lectures were fascinating.
Tons of homework, however, your historical writing skills will improve, as she does give feedback.
Just plain mean
No comment I do not wish to relive this experience
I got an A but her personality is sooo insufferable she is a nightmare to be around.
I thought her lecture style was difficult to keep up with. Although she was incredibly knowledgeable about the topics, she gave the students no help in understanding what she was talking about other than listening to the lecture or reading. Very critical, ultimately that helped my writing skills, it also was challenging to deal with her attitude.
Don't take her for any 100 level class!! Her standards are set way too high for a GUR. If you're a history major, I would consider two things. One, do you want your writing to get better? And two, do you have tough skin? My writing has improve dramatically but she would be belittle people in class and one-on-one.
Professor Constanzo was definitely a scholar of history and good at lecturing. She was good at answering my questions in class providing feedback. Her flaws was that she asks way too much in the writing assignments and essays with our class being only a level 1 class. Definitely one of the toughest graders in the university but kind.
