Wonderful lectures! Makes everything seem real and alive.
Incredible! Really made the history come alive! Only downside is that she is so popular that her classes are huge. I couldn't believe how much she seemed to know about everybody and everything involved in this period of church history.

Amazing stories, very entertaining and informative.
She is the best religion teacher I have ever had. She makes you work for your grade, but if you want to expand your knowledge of the gospel by leaps and bounds, take her class.
This class is awesome! Susan Easton Black is an awesome teacher that brings history alive! Take the class!
Incredible teacher, the class revolved around Joseph Smith(ref. to the other rating) Loved going to lecture. Best religion class at BYU or even the World
Her ego gets in the way of her teaching. Most of her "factual" accounts seem embelished and most people enjoy her class because she is more an egotistical entertainer than a thoughtful teacher. Class did zero for me.
The key to this class is memorize her lectures and then spit it out. No thought, no testimony building, no flexibility. She'll be teaching exactly the same thing 20 yrs. from now. Take her if you want her version of church history.
I love this teacher! She is the coolest! She makes church history so- real! Her lectures are amazing and so- interesting. She really knows what she's talking about, and I like the fact that she doesn't just spit out exactly what you just read in the book.
She brings Church history to life. She just tells the greatest storyies every class period. I never have nodded off in her class
Super good. best teacher i have ever had. knows little details that you would not learn anywhere else. take any off her classes if their available. SHES THE BEST!
Sister Black is an amazing professor. She brings so much insight to class that you can't help but be completely attentive to her lectures. Lectures are all out of her knowledge, she brings no notes to class, which really shows how much work she has put into researching church history. Incredible!
Class was great!
I took this class to learn more about church history and that's exactly what I got. Terrific lectures. I only wish that I could take notes faster. She was very helpful and friendly.
Best class I've ever taken at BYU!
I loved this class! I learned so many thtings about church history that I had no idea about. The teacher is passionate about the subject and you know can feel her testimony! Take this teacher for any class you can!
Sister Blacks lectures are packed with facts-be ready to take tons of notes! Tests tend to be difficult. Lots of fun stories. Great class
Dr. Black is incredibly well versed in church history. You will NOT regret taking any of her classes.
Awesome class, awesome teacher. She is so knowledgeable -- she never brings notes to class! Her tests are way hard though. I want to audit her classes in the future, but it killed my GPA! If you want to do well, NEVER miss a lecture and write down every name she ever says. Know your stuff.Study hard
Great lecturer. Extensive knowledge. It is crucial to attend classes and take very good notes for the test. I would recommend and hope to be able to take another class from her in the future.
That was my all time favorite class!!
Don't leave BYU without taking a class or do from Prof. Black. She will be the highlight of your BYU experience.
This woman is AMAZING!!! I can't believe how much she knows about church history. Take her class, any class, no matter what it is. You'll learn so much!
She is an amazing teacher. You can ask her anything about the history of the church and she will tell you the answer. She knows so much she doesn't even bring notes to the class. Write down every story she tells you. It really helps! It is a way fun class just make sure you study what she says too!
Sister Black definitely knows her stuff, but her tests can be very difficult. They come straight from the lecture and she speaks extremely fast. It is also hard to pick out what is actually important and you can't write down everything she says. It's interesting, but don't be fooled. It's not easy.
You have got to take this class. The second half is even better than the first! Sis Black is a brilliant teacher and tells it like it is! Highly recommended!
She has great lectures, but the tests have 100 multiple choice and there is not enough material for that many questions and so she'll just pull questions out of nowhere, or they will be the most obscure facts. You will love teh lectures, but take great notes!!
I love this class! Sis. Black is an amazing teacher. Take thorough notes and you'll ace the tests. Write down everything she says. You'll learn so much about church history. It's amazing how much she knows. I definately recommend this class!
Definately take from her. She knows everything about church history. Just make sure you write down everything she says. That's where 95% of her test questions come from. She is great. I wouldn't recommend anyone else.
If you signed up without knowing who she is, like me, your in for a nice surprise. I loved church history before but I learned so much more in her class. Take good notes, get a tape recorder if you can. Beware of tests!
Class is basically storytelling time. Lecture feels like a sacrament meeting talk... which is good for sacrament meeting but doensn't work well when you are going to be tested on the more obscure parts of the material.
Amazing teacher! Everyone should take this class! Very knowledgable (she is usually the source) and has written 100's of books. Fun and energetic. Tests are easy if you take good notes. Great class and teacher!
She is absolutly amazing! Some people say its hard but it really isn't but I am personally pationate about Church history. She tells great stories. For tests there are a LOT of people! Get the Orsons and Pratts straightened out definatly. Everything on the test is related to class. Take notes and attend EVERY lecture or you have no chance in an A.
This is absolutly the most amazing religion teacher. She knows more about Church history and Joseph Smith than probably anyone else. This has been my favorit class so far at BYU. When you take a church history class, take it from her, you learn so much, and the tests are fairly easy.
if you want to get an A, get a tape recorder or find a buddy who has one....she tends to talk fast sometimes.....also, it is good to listen to later when reviewing b/c she says almost everything in class that is on the test! great teacher, knows her stuff!
Best teacher I have had so far! Definitely attend every class, and be prepared for extensive note taking. I didn't have a tape recorder, but I highly recommend one! Amazing woman. Don't take church history from anyone other than her!
This was one of the funnest classes I have ever had. Sis. Black is an incredible teacher and is really funny. I would highly recommend this class and this teacher to anyone and everyone.
I absolutely adored Sister Black's class. She is informative and gives great insite into the lives of the early Saints. By far one of my favorite classes I've taken here, and it really isn't very difficult. My goal in life: become Susan Easton Black!
This calss was absolutely amazing. Sis Black really does know everything. The tests were more detailed and a little harder than I expected, but they are completely doable and the class is totally worth it.
I absolutely loved this class! You can't graduate BYU without taking a class from her, especially early church history. Each class was like storytime and it is so interesting and easy to study. However, the final was random and she threw in questions that I'd never even heard of, so even though people say you don't need the book, I would recomme
Probably the best religion class I have taken at BYU. Definitely take ridiculous notes because the tests are just on the random facts that she mentions, but it's so interesting that it doesn't even matter. If you can, definitely get a recorder also. She's great and knows absolutely EVERYTHING about the subject!
Sister Black knows lots about church history, but I couldn't stand her self-righteous, judgmental attitude. The tests are ridiculous--I listened to recordings of all the lectures three times and still failed. Bushman's Joseph Smith biography has all this information without the unfortunate attitude, weird lecture delivery, or deeply unfunny asides.
The person whose rating is below mine obviously is wearing a chip on their shoulder, as I took the class and found Sister Black to be full of love for her students. She really desires their happiness and would do anything for them. She was easy to approach and gave of her time freely for personal questions. She is a spiritual giant--the finest!
I took LDS History and going in, I had heard amazing things and that is what I got. She is by far the most knowledgeable religion professor I have had at BYU. Take notes on everything because she tests over EVERYTHING! Class is over 3 tests. She cares about the students and wants them to succeed. Getting an A isn't hard. Highly recommended.
Sister Black's class is tied for my all time fav class. Nobody misses class it is that good, I never skipped her class and that was a first for me, and I never studied that much for her tests (which are 100 mult choice) because I ate up the info she gave us in lecture . (I got an A, normally I get B's in religion 'cause I don't care that much)
Best Class I ever took, and best professor I ever had. One of the few classes here that I looked forward to going to, and though the test take a little memorizing, Sis. Black made the facts fun and interesting. Love the class!
This class was absolutely incredible! I found out so many things about the church that i never knew before. Sister Black is so energetic and you can't help but want to listen. Her tests are hard and completely off of her lectures so make sure to take really detailed notes, basically write down as much of what she says as you can & you'll be fine
Sis Black was a great teacher. Her class is interesting and she has a unique teaching style. No outside reading or assignments the whole grade is tests. If you pay attention in class(which is hard not to do) the class is a breeze
By far the best religion class I've had at BYU! She is incredible! All you need to do is go to class, take good notes (she talks pretty fast), and you'll do good. Your grade is three tests and thats it. Church history was never so fascinating.
By far the best religion class I've had at BYU! She is incredible! All you need to do is go to class, take good notes (she talks pretty fast), and you'll do good. Your grade is three tests and thats it. Church history was never so fascinating.
Sister Black is incredible. She knows everything about Joseph Smith, his life, the gospel. EVERYTHING! The class is difficult, tests really do test everything you learned in class which is A LOT. She talks (from memory) for 50 minutes and you are expected to know everything she says but even if you don't need the credit, take this class!
AMAZING!!!! I didn't think the tests were hard at all either. You eat up everything she says. You want to write the stories she tells. AS long as you know the stories and a couple dates, you will do fine. I LOVED HER CLASS!!!!!!!
Amazing class. I was enthralled by the lectures. Your hand will be moving as fast as it possibly can to take the best notes possible, but you will love every minute. Her tests test everything she says, even obscure facts. Almost like trivia. But it is so fun and interesting I would recommend it to everyone and their dog.
Sister Black is such an amazing teacher. Be prepared to take pages of notes every class period. You want to write down everything she says because it is all so interesting. Tests are fairly easy as long as you go to class and pay attention. I would recommend taking her again and again!
Probably the best teacher I have ever had. Straight up.
AMAZING TEACHER! I have never learned so much about Church History in my life and it was really interesting the whole time.
She single-handedly made me become obsessed with Church history. Awesome, awesome, awesome class!
She's a genius, almost like a mad scientist when it comes to the prophet Joseph Smith. Listening to her lectures is so enjoyable, and you learn so much. She lectures the whole 50 minutes without any notes or anything. It's like she's a professional story-teller, or like she was there when it happened. I would recommend this class to anyone.
One of the best classes ever. Lectures are outstanding- I wish I could purchase them to listen to in the car, etc. as well. Virtually no homework, but be prepared for hand cramps after lecture every day.
Amazing professor! Attending class was always the highlight of the day. Lectures without notes or power point- though you'd better take A LOT of notes. For HW, you had to read a biography of a prophet during semester: BY, JT, WW, or LS. Tests and grading of them very reasonable. 342 covers a lot of history that I think gets overlooked sometimes.
She was a great speaker. I loved that I learned a lot of things that I had no idea about. She told great stories and she never used notes, so you knew that she knew the topic.
I've never learned so much about the church. Take a class from her.
this class is either a nightmare or a joy. her lectures, amazing, her tests are questionable. some of the material she tests on wasnt lectured, not in the reading or so obscure in the reading you would miss it. this is bad cause your grade depends upon 3 test scores
Sister Black is a good teacher but I did get tired of her talking for 50 min. There's no discussion whatsoever. I did know that going in but it gets kinda boring in the long run just listening to her. Grade is based on 3 tests and some questions are very obscure. There is no attendance requirement so that is nice if you have a busy schedule.
Best religion class I've ever taken. Sister Black's lectures are really interesting and I learned a ton. The tests are not an easy A but they're not bad. Just be sure to take really good notes in class. She lectures the entire time which is nice because she's an interesting lecturer.
WOW! What an outstanding teacher. She really knows her subject SO well that she teaches without notes. I learned something new every class period. I would take this class again in a heartbeat. If you really want to learn Church History, then this is the #1 teacher to take! She is well worth the time and tuition. Fabulous!

If you really want to learn Church History, then this is the #1 teacher to take! She is well worth the time and tuition. Fabulous!
Suzie is the bomb! Best class ever! If you take a laptop and take notes and do the reading you will get an A no doubt. No real "surprise" questions on the test like some people say. She really knows her stuff and makes it very enjoyable. Awesome
Most interesting class ever!
This is the best religion class I have ever taken at BYU and I have taken at least ten. Sister Black has a sound knowledge of church history and she helps you learn a lot. It is easy to get an A if you just go to class and take good notes.
Yes, Sister Black knows a lot, and yes it's fascinating stuff. But if you want to learn about Church History, AUDIT this class. Don't take it for credit, because it is impossible! I went to every class, studied my notes for HOURS and the tests were ridiculous- no matter how hard you study, it won't ever be enough. NOT an easy A. Not even an easy B
It isn't a very spiritual class. She certainly knows a lot of facts about church history. The tests are basically just a trivia quiz to see what random facts you can remember from class. I didn't even write most of the things we were tested on down when we learned it in class, because I didn't think it was important.
Sister Black is the best Church History professor you could have at BYU. There are no assignments, just 3 tests, which aren't that bad if you take good notes. She's an awesome lecturer and you will learn so much!
Sister Black was the best teacher I've had at BYU. She loves what she teaches and her lectures are fascinating. If you pay attention in class and read the assigned chapters in the manual you will get an A. This class was easy because she made it so interesting.
Favorite class I've taken at BYU. I would recommend it to anyone, you learn so much about Joseph Smith, she knows SO much. No assignments, just tests on lectures, study and you will do well. 3 tests all semester. TAKE IT!!!
No one can contest that Sister Black knows an enormous amount about church history. After all, she literally has thousands of published pages in print. I would have liked a little more class discussion and opportunities to ask questions. I added the class late, so I missed the first 4 class periods, did little reading, and will pull an A-. Take it.
I love Sister Black! She knows everything! Your entire grade is all the tests, so that's intimidating. Do all the reading (blackboard and the book) and basically try to write down everything she said. If you know all of that, you will do great on the tests. Definitely one of my favorite classes
Sister Black is the BEST religion teacher at BYU PERIOD. Go to class, take notes, do well on the test. that is how you do well in her class. NO assignments and very little reading. Best teacher, Awesome classes, Can't get better.
Great class! I have studied Church History on my own for some time so I never had to read a thing out of the book and I'll get an A in the course. But if you have only studied stuff from Seminary or the scriptures, then you need to read the extra stuff she gives you and the book. No papers or assignments, 3 exams that are multiple-choice. Fun!
Sis. Black knows a ton about church history. She brought a lot of jokes to the classroom and her lectures were enjoyable. The tests were much harder than necessary. Prepare to study a bunch!
Excellent class, wish we had it every day. Three tests which are super easy because it's basics from what was covered in class. Take this class to learn about Joseph Smith and what church history means to all of us. Susan is a lot of fun.
Don't miss out on an opportunity to take this class! Wonderful experience. Class so much fun and very interesting. Susan is a great teacher and has unique experience in teaching this subject, which she does well. TAKE IT.
Awesome teacher! Class didn't even seem like school she was so entertaining to listen to.
This class was amazing. I, too, wished it was every day. She is an amazing storyteller; I'd look to see what time it was and the class was almost over. I'd had limited church history knowledge before this class, but now I'd feel confident if I ever had to teach it in church or seminary. Excellent class, amazing teacher.
Excellent class! Sister Black is a great lecturer and a really fun teacher. Just pay attention and you'll do great.
Sister Black is the best. She is funny and entertaining & LOVES the gospel. Her tests were very comprehensive, but fair. I would take every single religion class from her if I could. My favorite class, by far.
Absolutely an amazing teacher! She knows so much and it really is a lot of fun going to class. If you are thinking of taking church history from her do it! Test can be hard if you don't go to class and don't study, but if you do study you will be fine. I feel bad for anyone who doesn't take this class from Sis. Black
This class was okay. I didn't think it was as amazing as a lot of people seem to. Grades were based completely on three tests, so there was no homework, which was nice. The tests were hard, but fair for the most part, and weren't too bad if you studied. There was no participation in almost every class, just an hour long lecture each time.
Don't take this class unless you have an exceptional memory. The class is based entirely on 2 midterms and a final which are comprised of roughly 80 useless trivia questions. I studied hard, but don't have a memory for people, places and dates so I didn't do very well. But if memorization is your thing, then it is definitely an entertaining class.
Sister Black is amazing! Ya you need a good memory blah blah blah but the education you receive is way worth it! She is super knowledgeable, class is mandatory in the sense that if you don't go, you're not going to do so hot on the exams. Three exams thats it, no assignments or quizzes! Take really good notes, that is the key!
I didn't think I would be interested in this church history, but I loved this class!! Sis Black was really engaging, and I learned so much from her lectures. It will be hard to do well if you're not a good test taker because the only grades are the 3 tests. Take really good notes because most everything on the tests comes from her lectures.
Fantastic Class! I really enjoyed learning about the organization of the LDS church. I highly recommend the class. Sister Black is very specific in her lectures, and is willing to answer questions to the best of her ability. Recap: Amazing class, highly recommended, and fantastic professor.
BEST RELIGION PROFESSOR AT BYU. You will not regret taking a class from Sister Black.
I loved Sister Black! I didn't find the textbook that important to read because everything that's on her three tests is something that she says in class, in the packet or online. She talks rather fast but she lets you record lectures(which i recommend). As long as you read in her packet and go to class you'll be fine. It was definitely worth it!
Sister Black is an amazing teacher. She makes church history come to life. Many of her writings are available on blackboard and they are just as good. Your grade is determined solely by three tests. The test are quite hard since the questions are often very obscure. This class will bring down my GPA. Auditing this class is the way to go.
Sister Black is a great teacher and has so much passion for what she teacher! Her tests are extremely hard, though. Your grade is based off of 3 tests(1 final + 2 midterms)and Nothing else. The tests are almost entirely off of lecture so I would strongly recommend recording them! Auditing this class would be a better way to go so overall.
Susan Black, is amazing! Her class taught me so much! Just study the facts, don't miss class, and you will get an A on every test!! She's a great women and teacher!
Brilliant teacher. Love her laugh and her jokes. She loves what she teaches and wants you to get to love it too. Take lots of notes!! Tests are some-what harder but not impossible
The best class I've had at BYU. This is not an easy A. You will have to keep detailed notes and study them in detail before you take the test. You will love the way she brings the gospel to life. She is passionate about the subject and knows everything! This should be a required class at BYU to graduate.
very good professor. She is very fascinating. If you are good at memorizing things you will do fine on the test.
Sister Black is amazing. She remembers everything she's ever read about the Prophet Joseph Smith, and she's read almost everything that's ever been written on him! She is able to talk about church events as if she was really there, and you see a more complete picture of what things were like in that time.
Sister Black is Awesome! She really paints a picture with her words and can answer just about anything you can think to ask! She really knows her facts, too. She quotes more than one source for all her stories.
Sister Black is seriously amazing! Every day youll learn something totally new about church history! I cant even exlain how awesome she is you just need to take this class. Yeah!!
I LOVE SISTER BLACK!! One of the greatest classes I have ever taken. I use material from her class in church lessons all the time. Class was spiritual and fun.
This was a good class, and I learned a lot, but honestly, I was a little disappointed. Sister Black knows a ton, but I just wasn't as impressed by the class as I thought I would be (based on what I heard from other people). So, good class, but not as good as I thought it would be.
This is the pionneers class. It was fascinating. I didn't get an A, but I am still going to take 341 from her. The lectures are great, there's no reading, quizzes, or papers. 2 midterms and a final, that's all that goes int othe grade. So you need to go to lecture and take notes and study some for the exams, but that's it. Nice if you are busy.
Great class. Stories were awesome, but her storytelling is a little lacking. She talks really fast. Bring a laptop or record the notes. Basically just read through your notes a few times and memorize the people and dates and you'll be fine. My favorite class this semester.
Attendance is vital. You need to take notes constantly in class. But that's not hard because she is entertaining and passionate and the class material is really interesting. Study for the tests. Not too easy, but worth taking it from her.
I absolutely LOVED her!! She has a way to make everyone in the class interested in what she is teaching. She also really brings the Spirit. I learned so much from her class. Make sure to keep up on your readings as they are very helpful on the tests, and realize your whole grade is based off 3 tests. But it isn't hard if you study.
Great professor who really knows her stuff about the Prophet Joseph. If you take detailed notes and study them well, you should get an A. If not, you will not do so well. If you put in effort, you are rewarded.
Best religion professor at BYU by far. She retells the history like she lived through it. I was thrilled and amazed every time I went to class. This class is a must if you love church history. It requires detailed note taking, but it was well worth it. You will learn someting new every day that will strengthen your testimony.
