A lot of reading as with any lit class. The midterm was pretty easy. She gives many chances to improve your grade. Essays are easy because you write on topics discussed in class. I hate literature, but she has made the class doable.
An excellent teacher. Very helpful but it's important to come to class and TURN IN your assignments. As long as you make an honest effort to improve your work, you'll be fine in this class. She uses class time for lots of peer editing -- very helpful, since you can correct a paper right before turning it in! She even provides the whiteout!
A very nice teacher who loves what she's doing. She definitely makes you work though, so be prepared to read a lot.
Dr.Friedman is amazing. She absolutely loves what she is doing and will help you with anything you need. LOTS OF PEER EDITING! If yo go to class and make an effort to improve, there is no way you could possibly fail.
Unlike other professors she will not curve your grade. So you can make a 79 and still get a C.
She makes the exams way to freakin hard by making us write two yes two exams and asking us who said which quote from one of the stories we read. We read so many stories with so many characters it is impossible to know that.
I learned so much in this course. Dr. Friedman is one of the most fair essay graders I have every had. She gives you feedback for each essay and tells you exactly what to improve and follows your overall progress throughout the course. She isn't going to hand you a grade but if you earn it, she'll give it to you. She is always willing to help.
Enjoyed teaching style.
Wonderful teacher, she really enjoys what she is doing. There is a lot of reading and writing, but its an english class, what do you expect. She is very clear in her explanations and gives specifics for her tests. Tests consist of author bios, quotes, and general information. Definitely would take again, but you will have to do your reading.
Loves her job. Very approachable. Challenging but worth it. I learned so much in her class. Would recommend her to anyone who wants to get their money's worth out of a class.
She is an excellent teacher. You can not do well in the class without reading the material. It is not an easy class, but you will learn without a doubt. Tons and tons of writing, never-ending. The final is two hand written 4-page papers and like 60 MC questions. All has to too be done IN class. Other than that it is a good class. She makes it fun.
A LOT of reading, but what did you expect? Must do journals and essays. Shes a good teacher, although she never emailed me back on a question. Loves her work so its easy to get into the stories we read.
I really enjoyed getting into the material, especially King Lear. I'm not normally interested in literature, but she made it fascinating. Tests require a moderate amount of studying. Must do Journals, but you can do them all at the last minute if you want to. She only takes them up twice a semester and tells ahead of time when it will be.
Lots of writing, but she is very helpful in improving your writing. Quizzes are difficult, even if you read the material. Tests are passable as long as you study thoroughly. Two presentations, but both are with a partner or a group, instead of other sections of this class that make you present alone. Overall, an enjoyable, educational class!
I pass this class with flying colors and never read the material once by reading summaries and sparknotes posted online for each story. A 2 hr read just turned into 10 minutes. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.
I LOVE Dr. Friedman! I took her as a freshman and ended up taking an unessential class just because she made the material interesting. She does take attendance but that is okay. You need to read the material but if you read what you are supposed to (or even just the sparknotes) you will be okay. SHe is helpful and great, TAKE HER!
Coming from someone who hates all English/Lit courses, I LOVED this course. Attendance is mandatory, but you will want to go to class. Very interactive and expressive class. She sticks with the syllabus so NO surprises. Alot of quizzes and journals but they are super easy. She's a lovely lady. If you are opinionated and love debates TAKE HER!!!! :)
I LOVE Dr. Friedman! Going into class I didn't have very much interest but she made every class exciting! Attendance is mandatory and you need to read but her grading is fair. Her personality is so fun/quirky and every class is exciting. Take her!
She is not an easy professor, but if you are willing to work hard, you can make an A. Lots of article summary writing, so you will get summarizing practice. I learned a lot in this class. I had her for Bus. Lit. II, and chose to take her for this too. She is nice and I like her. Be on time -- tardiness really gets under her skin.
When the class is over you will love Literature. She is a good teacher. Lots of busy work and you have to read alot. I learned so much from her class. She is really funny and interesting. Tests are easy if you know the material.
Dr. Friedman will teach you things and make it fun to boot. Take her if you want to learn!
I had NO interest in Lit but have to take it to graduate. We are halfway through semester I am loving it. I lucked out in choosing to take american lit with Friedman. She makes it intersting. There are weekly assignments and quizes but they are easy - I always make 90+. I highly recommend her! Hwk, quizes, tests are EXACTLY as she says they will be
Dr. Friedman is an awesome teacher. She's funny, she's incisive, she's helpful -- just a great all around teacher. You have to do the weekly work and study for the exams to get an A, so don't think you'll breeze through, but if you work hard you can get an A. Excellent professor! I highly recommend her!
Amazing teacher! She will help you with anything you ask her about. She won't baby you, but she doesn't just leave you hanging for dear life. She makes the most boring stuff on earth pretty interesting. Great teacher, great class, take her!
Great professor! She's really nice and she keeps the lectures at least somewhat interesting. Keep up with your assignments and readings and you'll do fine in this class.
only prob is she assigns alot of work ..reading & papers! class is okay too, just sit & talk with others...cool lady too
I hated Literature before I took this class, and she made it very enjoyable! As long as you do the readings and journal assignments you will do fine on the tests!
I actually enjoy taking this class. It's a lot of work but the time span is pretty reasonable as far as assignments go.
When I first took Dr. Friedman's class I had no interest in Literature. After her class I switched my major to English, if that says anything. Her classes have a lot of busy work and she's very strict about attendance, but she's very passionate about what she teaches and I recommend her to anyone taking their sophomore literature sequence.
Ms. Friedman is wonderful! She is a bit of an oddball, but you will get used to it. I loved her reading class. She loves to have discussions and hear everyone's opinion. I always felt inspired after coming from her classes. Just read the text, do your assignments, and show up! You will love her class.
Easy class. Only problem is her attitude. Class got a speech for about half an hour on how she is the gatekeeper to our college diplomas. She referenced herself as "the bar we must jump over" too many times. If you can brush past her spurts of unprofessionalism, you'll do just fine.
She is an amazing professor, she loves her job and knows how to make her class interesting even to students with no interest, take her class you will enjoy it.
I am not a Literature person, so I did not necessarily like the class but love Dr. Friedman. Tough grader, but I feel like I actually learned in the class.
I hated her class! She has a very unclear form of grading. I missed a class and she did let me make up the quiz but then she proceeds to grade it in front of me and only reads the first couple of sentences of my 3 paragraph essay and slops down a 95 which is great but she couldn't even bother to read it all and she gave me a 95 on every quiz as if
The class is mostly reading and writing short essays about the reading (basically just summaries and your response). Some of the reading is long and boring, but a lot of it is really interesting. Class itself is fun, get involved in the discussion. We had to buy several small books, much cheaper than a huge textbook.
She's an amazing teacher! But she is a tough grader. Make sure you go to her office hours or email her for help in writing papers. If she knows you are trying, will likely cut you some slack. Also, go to class!!! It annoys her when people don't show up without a good excuse. Make her like you!!
The syllabus for this class looked overwhelming at first but if you just read the material it is an easy class! 2 exams and a paper and she is very clear about what will be on them! Lectures make the material easy to understand and she is funny! Class is a lot of discussion. Journals and quizzes are easy A's and you no surprises.
Dr. Friedman is easily the best English instructor I've had. She is very knowledgeable and will help you anytime you need. She has a kind personality. Put your best foot forward, COME TO CLASS, get the work done, and you'll never regret taking from her. Slack off, and she won't hesitate to voice her displeasure. I would definitely take her again.
Easy class and fun teacher. She tended to rant for the entire lecture on the reading and never asked for our input then got pissed when we didn't respond. Ten two-page journals and ten in-class quizzes that are easy to ace.
As long as you are up to date with your readings and keep up with the assignments, you will do well. Participation/discussion is mandatory!! Overall one of the best professors I've ever had!!
Dr. Friedman is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about literature, and is a great teacher. She is very helpful and approachable, but expects genuine effort on your part. The journals and quizzes are easy to do and study for. Study hard for the tests though- they are very heavy and require a fair amount of memorization.
Very good professor. She gets you to learn and think by posing questions and by getting everyone to participate. She makes good comments in class. Fairly hard grader. I received a B+ because I didn't put in the effort I should have. Work hard, READ THE READING ASSIGNMENTS, study, and you should be fine.
Dr. Friedman makes learning to write fun, and she gives you many chances to improve your writing. You have weekly journals/quizzes where you are allowed to write about what YOU want to from within the text. The emphasis in her class is definitely learning about yourself and your identity, so you will be reading mostly autobiographies. Amazing class
Dr. Friedman is really rad. She is fair and even tried to listen to the perspectives of the irrationally wrong people.
She will not round your 89.4 up to an A. If youre a minority, she will call you out, even though she say stuff like you dont know what its like to live under a different label. She will turn your English class into a Gender Studies class. Topic of the class is identity but we ended up studying about race and genders. Do not take.
I second everything the previous comment says. Dr. F doesn't care about how good or bad of a writer you are, as long as you blatantly write about how white males have "privilege" and should feel awful about themselves for being born that way. She creates a very uncomfortable environment by calling out certain students by name. LOTS of reading!
Dr. Friedman is tough grader because she doesn't round your average (ex: a 79.9 in her class is a C), and that's why I wouldn't take her again. To be fair, she gives good feedback by telling you what she does or doesn't like on whatever you wrote about. It is a college literature class: lots of reading and lots of writing.
Extremely caring and is available for any kind of help. Lots of reading but texts selected were interesting and the lectures were fun.
I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Friedman. I was so nervous when class first started because I do not like literature at all!! Dr. Friedman has changed that and I'm actually thinking about taking another class of hers. She's just the best! She cares about her students and makes sure they understand the reading.
Dr. Friedman has been one of my favorite professors. I came into this class sort of liking literature and left it loving lit! I cant wait to take her 208 class.
Lectures are always interesting, but there's reading before every class. The reading is mostly all interesting, but if you skip a reading, you might be lost in the class discussion.
She's not hard. Just show up and try to read the books.
She seems to appreciate unusual perspectives on the assigned works. She makes her opinions on the text clear, but doesn't expect agreement from the students.
Nice but unclear expectations
She is blatantly hateful to students. She will disregard your concerns when it comes to your grade because in her mind she is never wrong. This class was super similar to a women/gender studies class. Wouldnt take her again. Super difficult to work with. Very rude.
Taking her class was the worst decision I made freshman year. She said honors kids can't take failure, and they would be lucky to get an A. Long, boring lectures focused on women & gender issues. No instructions on assignments. Bad feedback. Rude to students in class. Long reading assignments. Little time to write papers. Snarky. No STEM majors.
Very accessible outside of class: call, at the gym, etc. but she is unrealistic with her grading. She did say honors kids shouldn't expect to get an A. Would give feedback, and when you made changes, she still grades you poorly. She is ALWAYS right. Likes religious references, I'm not religious and my participation grade & analysis grades showed it
This was an easy and enjoyable class. Dr. Friedman provides lots of interesting topics for in class discussion and the reading selections were all fun to read. Her class is structured in a simple way - read the selection, write a short "journal" response, and discuss in class. Midterm and Final are just multiple short essays about the reading.
I absolutely LOVED this professor. You really do have to put the work in a read all of the assigned readings but it is so worth it. Her lectures were always great and as long as you did the readings, you were fine in the class. She really changed my perception of English lit. If you need to take a class and she's listed as an option, take her!
Dr. Friedman understands that most of her students are STEM majors but makes the lectures interesting for everyone. Offers feedback and is available for consultation if needed. Super keep on open class discussion.
She is a really nice lady and is very good about responding to emails quickly. There is a lot of reading. The class is made up of 10 journals, 5 quizzes, a midterm, and a final. Her grading can be tough, but if you do all of the reading and work you will be fine.
Easy class if you're willing to do the reading and writing, and Dr. Friedman is incredibly approachable and kind if you are having any issues. Journals/exams were the most important components of your grade, and just showing you understand the material is enough to get an A.
Great professor! If you are interested in learning more about ancient literature without having to demystify it yourself, I highly recommend taking 207 with Friedman. She can come off blunt some days but her enthusiasm toward the subject is unmatched. The grading structure was fair. As long as you do the reading and come to class, you will pass.
Took her for English 207 and 208 she is pretty blunt about what she expects but overall did not think it was a difficult class. She does make attendance mandatory. I honestly thought the quizzes and journals were fairly easy as well as the midterm and final.
Dr. Friedman has been my favorite professor here at UAH. Her class is not hard if you are willing to do the work. Read what is assigned and pay attention in class and you should walk out with an A! Dr. Friedman is very friendly but she expects you to put in the work!. Would take her 10/10 again if I ever had another class taught by her.
Discussions weren't really discussions. Instead, she had a habit to cut people off and go on tangents.
The class is made up of 5 quizzes, 10 discussion posts, and a Midterm and Final Essay. Class attendance is mandatory and you get a grade for it, which can make or break your grade. During class, all you do is discuss the previous reading material, which can get pretty boring if you're not interested in the books.
Dr. Friedman is entertaining and leads interesting discussions. She understands that not everyone wants to talk in class so she has an attendance grade instead of a participation grade. None of the assignments are particularly difficult but will take some time. Some due dates are pretty tight, but overall a great professor and effective class.
Excellent teacher overall. I had her for HON101 and EH105, both of the required honors english and research classes freshman year. Her syllabus contains the plans for the entire semester, but she is open to changing plans based on input from students. In my opinion, a little lenient on deadlines but creates an amazing atmosphere to learn.
Mediocre, doesnt let you use your phone and will call you out if you even check the time. Doesnt grade very leniently and the readings are basic and all similar / about the same themes. Kind of rude and brash. Not too difficult though.
I would not take her because she does not allow you to pay attention to anything except just her talking for an hour and a half. Not really any interactive discussions, you discuss the same thing pretty much every class. Overall pretty boring and she's also rude.
I adored Professor Friedman! This course consisted of a lot of reading and writing, but she was pretty clear on what she wanted you to do. It is obvious that she cares about you; if you put in the work, she recognizes it, and if you don't, she recognizes that as well. As long as you show up to class and pay attention, you'll be okay!
I don't recommend taking Professor Friedman for this course. Your grade depends heavily on the midterm and final exam. The exams are both written assignments and she is a nit picky grader.
Yes, she has high expectations, but at least she cares a lot. She believes no one should be given 100% on anything (I don't remember her explanation). I've had her for both HON101 and EH105; it was a pleasure to have her as my professor. Get ready to read a lot and be prepared to participate in class.
Dr. Friedman was very interesting for the HON101 course. There were mandatory readings before each class but it didn't matter if you read them or not. She wants you to get an A in this course. For all of the assignments the lowest you could get was a 90 if you turned it in. Make sure to use MLA formatting correctly.
She is really nice and for the honors yoga seminar you would have to try hard to fail the class. While she is a bit of a tough grader (not harsh, just mildly nit picky) she wants everyone to get an A and gives really good feedback on assignments.
Took her for Conversations in Gender and Sexuality. Very discussion-heavy class, and it was much more fun than I anticipated. Very understanding of outside circumstances. She used a textbook, but we weren't required to purchase it (she uploaded pictures of required readings). Overall a good professor, would reccomend.
I took her for women and gender studies. Just put effort into the writing assignments, which are not even harshly graded, she just wants to see your insights. I would have done better if I didn't miss one assignment. Grades a little harder on the midterm than the regular assignments. Overall, stress free class!! She's very caring as well.
Prof. Friedman is a wonderful human being -- and a fantastic professor on top of that! Her wonderful personality brought a true joy of learning to a bunch of nervous freshmen like myself, and her course for HON-101 is a great exploration of the archives!
Overall Dr. Friedman is a nice person, her teaching is not as nice. Her lectures are incredibly ramble-y with unclear points and VERY unclear directions. Rubric is not clear and her grading is extremely harsh for a 1 credit class. Very unclear in what she wants from the students and assignment details and announcements are confusing at best.
Dr. Friedman is VERY scattered/unorganized. Her lectures are mostly rambling and her grading criteria is vague. She seems like a very sweet lady, but this "intro to college" was way more involved than a 1-credit course should be. Be ready for lots of group work. If you put in effort (more than I think should be necessary) you 'll do fine.
She's very very nice and her class is chill, the only reason I said I wouldn't take the class again is because the final project for her version of this class is significantly more work than other professors version of the class. That being said you can't go wrong if you are in her class.
VERY nice, easy to talk to. Clear, constructive, & open after class for questions. You'll be held to a high standard & are expected to write well, but she'll help if you have trouble. Some reading, but not much. Assignments were fun (you can explore your interests). A great introduction to UAH, Honors, & the Archives. Felt like I gained something.
