umm....has a lot to say....very interesting
tough teacher, but she's good
high on herself but smart. Won't be taking a class with her again
help you think
No Comments
she hard on you or not..just expect a headache and know its your mind growing!
Not helpful if you email her and not easy unless she favors you
very tough class, if she likes you that's great, if not, is too bad!
her effects stay with you long afterward...worth it
Hard but good teacher. Just takes a while to get used to thinking the way she does.
Lots of work, hard marker. Very intelligent. Challenging but very rewarding in the long run.
SHE SUCKS!!!
pessimistic and cynical. she only tells you the bad news.

Very tough but very rewarding class. Makes you think. Very influential
If you want to do a lot of work then take her class. Extremely hard marker. Its not even a philosophy course, its a freaking english course... essays every week... And she's a feminist as well... I'm talking about if you have a **** your in crap.

She has a tendency to give preference to a select few who are mostly males. She is a hard marker, but she usually takes off 3 of your worst marks. One more piece of advise is to not think for yourself, only tell her what she wants to hear.
has a tendency to put people down in class (shoots down people when they answer incorrectly). she marks fairly hard but is always willing to take time to help students in need. she also assigns a lot of work for homework. not really difficult.

She's very unclear of what she wants from your assignments and is a HARD marker. Unclear and an intimidating teacher, wouldn't want to have her as my Philosophy teacher
She's a hard marker & she screams all the time, a simple no would cut it rather than yelling at your students. She's a hypocritical commi to top things off-if you preach it at least practice it Sue! Her text is full of propaganda.
She is the most interesting teacher I have ever had. She gives you specific information about what she is looking for in her mini essays, although she is a tough marker.
She is an awesome teacher, but a hard marker... I think she does the job well thought. For this kind of subject you have to put in effort and think deeply, and the people that did that got a good mark. Her debates are really interesting and great!
I took 5 courses with her, obviously I liked her classes a lot. She challenges you, and marks a bit differently than some teachers, but its all good if you pay attention to what she wants and actually think about your work. I recommend 110, 221, and environmental ethics (208?).
Interesting subject matter. Very hypocritical and a hard marker, will say it's good, and then give you a bad mark. She is quite a strong feminist and can be very hypocritical. Take the class if you don't mind getting a bad mark.
Not bad at all her classes r amazing u get into the most interesting discussions. She yells, but only when shes laughing! cracks jokes all the time. 221 makes you look at your life differently & 240 was awesome (sex!). One of the only profs worth having. tends 2 mark hard but shell help you.
She is a wonderful teacher and really cares about her students. She is a hard marker, but only because she really wants her students to understand what she is teaching. I would reccomend taking her class.
Excellent class, one of my favorite teachers. If you dont want to have your beliefs questioned dont take the class! Come in open-minded, with a good attitude and work hard. I did that and got an A+!

Amazing prof who is passionate and intelligent. These courses are genious, although she can be a hard marker at times, but fair.
Dont skip class, do the work, show respect and interest and you will do fine..but I guess that goes for every class...meh. JUST DO NOT EVER SKIP.
Awful, just awful. Can't say it any other way.
she's passionate about her job.truly wants you become a better thinker (logically+argumetatively +teach you to think more deeply).but it makes it very difficult to do very well.in your 4 mini-essays, you always hav to support) +contradict ur belief (oppose) with very strong reasons, then respond to ur opposition, making it sound weak w/o denying it
sue is a very interesting prof! Gender phil was also a very interesting class. I've recommended it to all my friends. 3 mini essays and weekly quizes on the readings and thats all. I put minimal effort into it and got an a+!
Sue's Critical Thinking Class is absolutely amazing- her curriculum is really eye-opening and her textbook is extremely useful. However, if you don't do ALL of the homework she assigns (and there's quite a bit, and it is repetetive) or if you don't show up for lectures, you WILL fail, but the effort is definitely worthwhile.
if your going to listen to anyone just trust what i'm going to tell you. absolutely brilliants teacher who has created a thought provoking and very interesting course. Having said that the course just has way too much work involved and you have to try incredibly hard to get a good grade.
A powerful woman with powerful classes. She may be intimidating to some, but Sue was an absolute inspiration to me. Loved her class, and would take anything taught by her again in a heartbeat.
Amazing would not even explain how amazing she is.
Dr.Gardner is a true inspiration to me.I look up to her in every sense! She has inspired me to choose my major to be phil..Cannot possibly put into words how incredible she is.Attendance is a must. You NEED to read the text before each lecture, and be sure to always send her a copy of your essay before submitting it in..Extremely helpful!I adore her
Sue should get an award for influencing so many young people's lives.By far, THE MOST intelligent prof I have ever had.Classes are never dull with her..She has a great sense of humor which help make classes very interesting..You will NOT regret taking her course! She is a very fair marker, though you must be attending all classes and do all reading
Sue is just amazing i took her this last semester and she was the first teach i ever had at Cap that actually cared about all her students and their well being. She not only is a great teacher but i promise she will change your life and the way you think
I feel absolutely honoured to have been in Dr.Gardner's class. I have taken all her courses..she will change your life, bring you out of the box you've been living in all your life. I highly recommend her. She genuinely cares for her students and teaches with a passion. Love you Sue!!
Dr. Susan Gardner will change your life and the way you think. Paying attention to the textbook (which she wrote herself!) and to her mind-blowing lectures will do more than just give you access to a good grade. It will make you a more inspired, intelligent, and interesting person. Her course is like bootcamp for the mind.
the class is called critical thinking, but she wants you to think exactly the way she does + attendance is mandatory.overall interesting class, it just takes time to get used to her teaching.
She is a great prof. Will take more classes with her. Critical Thinking really is life changing.. take it!!!
Very confrontational and hardly helpful at all if a student is having troubles with the material. Basically reiterates the textbook, which she wrote, with no further explanation.
"Critical Thinking" = having the exact same opinion as her or risk being quickly shot down. She is a very nice person outside of class but highly intimidating during lectures, which are brief.
The class wasn't so bad. Helps you think outside the box. An easy A for you if you like philosophy.
The class was a breeze. Got a A- when I could have gotten an A+. She was helpful outside of class time and anytime you can catch her. Very willing to engage in a conversation and wants to help you.
So so class......I don't know if I would take courses again with her..... she's ok I guess.
Sue will teach you to question your own thinking, belifs, and values. She is extremely passionate about your feild and that is exactly what you should look for in a prof. She makes herself very reachable if you need help or extra learning. If you want to make your univ experience worth it, take critical thinking!

Sue has helped change my entire life around. I was a C-avrg student when I first took her crit thinking class 2 yrsago. That class has influenced me tremendously! My GPA average is now 3.9. Im at sfu but come back to cap every year to take anythin taught by her! Believe me.You wont regret taking her class. I love you Sue!!
Don't be intimidated by her approach. She will change the way you think and write (in a good way). Great teacher!
This prof should be awarded for her critical thinking class! WOW! I have recommended this class to my friends at sfu and ubc. It has changed their way of thinking!Even if philosophy is not your major/minor, you NEED this class to become more intelligent!Take it!She is extremely helpful too. If you do your readings and attend class you should do fin
I can understand how she would be good however she seems really stuck in her ways and didnt listen to me, I feel i learned a little but i dont think i got as much as I could have from it.
She must be given an award for her critical thinking class. she has helped me come out of the shallow box I've been living in all of my life. She is a true inspiration. No matter what your major or career plans are,TAKE THIS CLASS!she is extremely helpful, but you must put in the effort of doing your readings and attending class.Amazing Amazing prof!!
I will take any class Susan teaches. Not only is she the best teacher i have ever had, she is also one of the most wonderful humans i have ever met. If you enjoy learning, you will get along with Susan beautifully.
One of the best classes I've ever taken with an astounding teacher. She's tough, but she's clear and she's helpful when you need it. I would take another class with her in a heartbeat.
Great class. She's very passionate about what she teaches.
Awesome professor, you can actually learn something from Sue. Her class is more than just recieving credits, if you play your cards right and listen, this class will blow you mind. She's very helpful and kind if you visit her during her office hours.
Susan is a great teacher and a great human being. Yes, she is tough and overly passionate about the subject matter. Expect to do tons of homework and consistently show up for class. Expect to dig deep down inside of you and be open to receving criticism. At the end of the day she will change the way you think but only if you let her.
Intro to Philosophy is one of the best classes I took in my four years at Cap. Susan is an amazing teacher! No complaints, this class changed the way I think and argue.
Susan is an amazing person and prof. While she's a tough marker, her class is amazing. She makes you think deeply about relevant issues in your own life and will change the way you think. I've never laughed harder in any class at Cap. If homework, criticism and remembering names arent your thing STAY AWAY, you will hate this class. Take this class!
This Professor is someone worth listening to if you want to live an intentional meaningful life. Take her up on her offers for office hours. She's great on challenging you to "create you" and not just asking you to regurgitate information.
Had Sue for Critical Thinking; it was definitely one of the hardest, most (mentally) demanding classes I had. It is also the one I took the most from & am extremely thankful for it. It opened my mind on a variety of topics & got me to reevaluate my stance on a number of issues. I am taking another class with her (240)-glad I am & I will next sem!
If you don't agree with her Kantian approach, she will definitively eat you alive!
The most amazing class I've taken at Cap. I'd never felt so comfortable being so honest and personal with classmates I had just met. Susan is a tough but inspirational teacher with passion. Not an easy journey so don't consider this an "easy" version of a Q course... but I strongly recommend that every Cap student should take Sue's PHIL 110 class.
Extremely difficult: Good course material, but is not negotiable. Hypocritical (will dispute her own arguments every so often). Good course, poor professor. Would not recommend.
Susan is an excellent professor. Her existentialist challenges will make you concerned about the level of meaning in your life and give you a lot more than a typical classroom ever will.
Sue makes it very clear that you have to do the homework. She wont ever spell out what you need to do to get high marks on her essays, but she was 100% available by email when I had questions. Don't hesitate to email her if you don't understand something! My good grade is due, in part, to her guidance by email.
Sue is an amazing teacher. I struggled the first bit of the critical thinking course and then I really started to get the hang of it. Come to all the classes, find a homework buddy (I promise it helps). TYPE all of your arguments. She will change the way you think! Truly a remarkable teacher.
Hated her for the first half of the semester. Then something switched for me. I found that she really cares about the subject and students. She was pushing us to our limits. I firmly believe that my writing is much better because of her. I took the semester course, dropped out and then took the two week one in the summer. defiantly the way to go.
I took this class in 2 weeks.I went for quantitative credits and left with an appreciation of open mind vs unquestioning mind. This course will teach you to think and should be a required class for all uni students. Sue will work you to the bone, demand the best. She cares immensely for her students and is truly passionate about what seh teaches.
Very controlling....controls where you sit, how you take notes, even when you go to the washroom...and suppose to be teaching free thinking!
Took PHIL 100, 240 & 221 with Sue Amazing professor, one of the best I have ever had. Took 3 courses with her (would have taken more if I could!) at Capilano. I had a really hard time the first class I took with her and my marks reflected that, but she really helped me see somethings in the end once I was open to it. Then I wanted to learn more and challenge myself more. She is really there for her students and is trying to challenge you. Showing up and participation matter. Go to her office hours! Expect that you are wrong and trying to peel away the layers of how that might be the case. Her courses are about exploring what is rightethical not proving that you are right. I grew so muchas a student, in my writing and thinking, and in myself because of Sue and these classes. I am so grateful for her!
I took her 2 week condensed class in the summer. The class was definitely one of the hardest I've taken given its extremely condensed nature. Susan knows what she is teaching. She is blunt, but she wants you to succeed. Attend class, study class material until you know it 100 % and ask for help when you need it and you'll do fine.
Sue really changed my life. She has high expectations and challenges the way people think. Her passion for philosophy and for her students really shows; She truly cares. She is always willing to make time to further explain concepts or to give feedback. You get out of it what you put into to! If you work hard, you will feel rewarded in the end.
A wonderful human being who really takes the time to ensure that everyone is involved and understands the topics being discussed. Isn't afraid to bring up personal life experiences to help further relate to the topic at hand, and encourages students to relate to their own experiences in order to better grasp the meaning of each topic.
Amazing prof. Took her 2 week class and it was unlike any class I've ever been in. I hated it at first but was so sad it was over by the end. She can be really intense, and a little abrasive sometimes but it's only because she cares so much. Wouldn't recommend to anyone just looking for easy credits but the class can change your life if you try.
Desks are arranged into a circle around the class Group meetings almost every week (you don't get to choose who is in the group. Group size: 4) Quizzes are easy Assignments (mini-essays) are marked harder. Lots of feedback given You WILL get to know your classmates well... even if you don't want to
The most down to earth prof I have had. She genuinely loves the course and wants you to succeed. I took the condensed two week course, I was dreading it of course but honestly enjoyed it. She creates an open environment and wants discussions. She gives notes on how to do assignments so you can do well!
I took the condensed course. I wasn't hoping to pass in first week but she helped a lot and i passed the course and learnt many things
Great professor.
Susan is a good person. Material taught is good. However she is a very hard marker, if something is not written exactly how she wants it marks will be taken off. She is also very biased while marking your work. Taking her class was one of the worst experiences in my academic career.
biomedical ethics ain't for the weak! prepare to discuss the political and economic state of the world while sitting in a circle. no exams, just quizzes, and two essays as assignments. a good professor, she's passionate about philosophy and truly wants you to reason better. though, this class just wasn't for me.
I would take 100 courses with Dr. Sue and rate her 10000/10. She is an excellent teacher, your best critique, very direct and hilarious! Every word she says is purely based on logic. Now the downside, there is a lot of homework, and she will only help you if you help yourself and show her the efforts. This class is all about efforts!
