an incredibly caring, clear, and excellent professor
Class is fast paced, but Dr. Groh makes it fun and relaxed.
Very caring. Willing to help you at every turn. Lecture can be tedious though.
I learned a lot in this class, very intense, but Dr. Groh makes it fun.
I took both of her classes honors, and she had trouble helping students
Groh is a one of a kind concerned, awesome prof-just take good notes and study
She was great in class, always helpful, and after 4 yrs. still remembers me.
lectures aren't always clear, but nobody's more dedicated to her students.
The class is very hard and very confusing. She assumes you know a lot already.
A really great prof. Class is hard, but you learn a lot. She'll help any time.
Class moves too quickly and she assumes that everyone has a very strong bkgrd.
Class is really hard but she's available to help at every turn. Awesome teacher.
i think she's easy. her tests are just like her practice tests.
moves quickly, but explains patiently. very willing to help
One of my favorite teachers! She is always willing to help.
Not bad if you already know a lot of chem or are willing to spend time learning
Fast paced and confusing. I would not recommend.
Always willing to help. Go to the optional problem sessions.
Incredible teacher, work is hard and you need to study lots, but you learn a lot
Hard course. She is extremly accesible. Go to optional prob session. IT HELPS!
Hard class, but she's fun, clear, flexible, and willing to help.
Moves quickly but the tests are fair. Coolest chick on campus!
sometimes vague or confusing in lecture, but always willing to help, go prob set
Great class... requires alot of time though, so be prepared. Well worth effort
extremely nice, pretty difficult class but do the work and you'll be fine
Difficult class but she is a great professor, very approachable and personable.
Excellent teacher, but class requires strong background
Good teacher, HARD AS HELL!!!
Excellent teacher, tests are killer though (bring advil)
KILLER tests.Read course packet lots. Excellent lectures.Go to prob session.
Great teacher-- read ahead before lectures, tests are hard, very willing to help
teaching style does not fit ALL learning styles, lectures very boring
tests were unnecessarily difficult
good teacher, very helpful; hard tests, look at old exams she gives to you!
tests and problem sets are a lot of work. you learn a lot and teacher is helpfu
One of the best profs here. Tests are hard, READ COURSE PACKET. Very fair.
very hard tests, problem sets, and labs; she's very helpful though
awesome prof, hard class, but be ok if do course packet and study hard
Best Professor Ever!!! Gives candy at tests, which take 3-5 hours. Study hard!
Easy class lectures, hard tests and graded assignments...CANDY @ TEST!!!
shes not a bad teacher, but dont get on her bad side, she holds a grudge
Good Prof. Hard Class. Study.
Will help, even 5 min before report is due. Course packet is a life saver.
Lab write ups are worst. Good prof. tho Course packet helps a lot with tests.
Awesome prof. She kept the class interesting. Killer tests
What a nice teacher, Lots of studying, Hard tests, but she has point recapture!
very hard tests, very nice lady
Nice, absolutely brilliant. Tests are insane, but you'll learn a lot from her
Very Nice, But Very Hard. Lab Sucks
Great prof - really cares, tries to help chem make sense.
phenomenal professor; don't miss this class
TAKE HER CLASS! and read the course packet. Point recapture is awesome
very hard tests. boring lecture. prob sets and course packet helps though!
if you didn't do well, then you didn't study enough. Best teacher I've ever had
only class i didnt sleep thru. labs hard, but worth up to 95% if revised
She's very nice and helpful; but the class is extremely hard, very difficult labs/exams
fantastic teacher - learned a lot!
Very nice. It's not hard if you've had 2 years of chem in high school. If you haven't then you can still do well you just have to work harder. Only take if you have good work ethics or a good background in chem, but she is a really cool lady.
good teacher, notes on the board are sometimes not clear nor easy to read, she babbles quickly which makes it hard to get everything down, tests are extremely difficult (can take hours to finish), but if you study and use the materials, you can do well
One of those teachers who is hard but everyone loves her anyways. Demos, candy at tests, good humor. Likes problem-based learning and group work. Problem sets and tests are long, but often cool realistic situations in ?'s. Fair grading. Helpful.
really great teacher, but really tough. willing to help, but do not take the honors section unless you are really prepared for it.
Overall, a very good professor. A fair amount of work is assigned, but none is impossible. I ralely studied for tests and still did fine. Dr. Groh is also very willing to answer any questions regarding an assignment. COMPLETE / UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM SETS
Pretty fair curve. Make sure to use old tests and problem sets to study for exams. She gives out candy for tests. Actually had to study since it was a hard class. Labs are annoying as hell.
very helpful and understanding. gives candy out during tests and will give in class too if you ask. tests are not too hard as long as you look through previous years tests in course packet. makes lectures interesting. only class i went to on regular basis
Great teacher. Talks quickly and scribbles on board so you have to rush to keep up but very helpful during office hours. Problem sets and tests are very time consuming but you can do well if you work for it. USE COURSE PACKET!!
do *not* take the honors section of this course unless you already know a lot of chemistry
Nice lady, but class is sort of ridiculous if you haven't had chem extensively before. Way too much work each week without a break.
good class but requires some work -u will have to think not just memorize. Nice mix of lecture and group work. Prof very helpful if u go to see her. Definitely do old tests and problems - major help!!!
Knows her chemisty...very helpful if you go in to see her. Use the course packet...it might be of assistance to you. Very difficult class overall so don't get behind!
Problem sets are HARD and TIME-CONSUMING! Work with a group to do them! Tests aren't too bad--study problem sets and old tests. Gives out candy a lot! Labs are a pain. Class is boring sometimes. Some groupwork and demos. Very nice person! Haven't learned a whole lot, but understand more.
Difficult class. Lectures can be somewhat confusing, and the work outside of class (esp. problem sets) are extremely difficult and very time consuming. However, she places emphasis on teamwork which really helps you get to know others in the class. She is very helpful during office hours and will help you as much as possible if you seek her out.
HARD CLASS. I hope you've taken ap chem. I hadn't and it hurt. I was a straight-A student in high school and this was an eye-opener. Nicest woman, ever. (My advisor, actually.) But tests and quizzes are very difficult, and the final was RIDICULOUS. Expect to WORK. Focuses on group work and studying, so you'll meet people. That was great.
Her lectures are slightly confusing sometimes. She defines equations without defining variables, and she sometimes doesn't clearly define elementary terms necessary for understanding the rest of the material. That's only once in a while, though, and she is otherwise a decent teacher and a very amiable person.
She knows her stuff but I don't think she teaches things very clearly. I get a lot more out of just reading the textbook. The problem set homeworks take forever and they're hard. The tests are pretty tough too. READ/TAKE NOTES ON THE TEXTBOOK CHAPTERS BEFORE YOU GO TO THE LECTURE! It helps a lot. Also do problems in the back of the book.
Interesting class, definitely take 111/112 Honors with Groh if you get the chance. It's hard and confusing at times, and you have to work your butt off for the problem sets, but it's worth it. Go to her office hours. She's a really nice person and is always willing to help and go the extra mile for her students.
Groh is great. She loves chem and wants you to love it too. Her class is VERY VERY challenging, but it helps you do well. The problem sets are time consuming, but are also crucial to success in the class. Large emphasis on group work and overall comprehension of the material.
Groh was by far the best teacher i have ever had in my life! she is very difficult, but always available to help her students. she actually cares about how youre doing in the class, and makes a point to get to know all of her students. her tests are incredibly hard, even with studying, but you can gain points back on the final. TAKE THIS CLASS!
If you didn't have AP chem in high school I wouldn't recommend taking her class honors. I found it really difficult and it was very hard to learn the material when she pretty much assumes you already know most of it. This was my only class I got a C in while at UD and I worked really hard for it.
Great professor! But the class is hard. The problem sets can be very challenging and time consuming. If you study really hard for her exams, you'll be fine.
Very helpful and knowledgeable, but make sure you have a very good background in chemistry if you take this honors. She assumes a lot of previous knowledge and a lot of on-your-own learning, but is very willing to help, and very nice.
SOOOOOOSAN! is my favorite teacher at UD. she is a hilarious and happy professor. she always makes time to help her students. her problem sets take forever, but they really help with understanding the material. the class moves very fast, so its necessary to do alot of outside the classroom preparation and work.
Oh goodness! I have nothing but good to say about SOOOOSAN. This was by far the most difficult class I've taken, and would not recommend for those without a very solid Chemistry background, but she is VERY helpful if you take the time to ask for assistance, and is very dedicated to helping her students master the material. Super friendly, too.
An amazing prof who really takes the time to make sure you understand as long as you ask. V. helpful during office hours. However, course is difficult, not impossible, I'm managing about an A-/A with a lot of effort. Make sure you love chem! A strong chem background is necessary for this class. But Groh is very funny and lectures are interesting.
This class is hard as balls but Groh is a nice prof. Wish she would explained certain things better but overall I'm happy with her.
Susan Groh is an amazing professor and adviser and just about the nicest woman you will ever meet. Her class is definitely a challenge, even if you've taken AP, but you can still pull off an A with hard work and asking her questions. She's always willing to help you and is a great help for anything chem-related.
Probably the hardest freshman class at the University, this class owned my life for a semester. Prof. Groh is awesome though, probably the nicest professor I have had yet. Feel like I put in way to much effort just to earn a B. If you did not take AP Chem it would be best to avoid this class, many concepts you are assumed to already know.
The class is hard and requires a lot of work. Groh is one of the best professors at the university though, and is a nice genuinely good person. She goes out of her way to help you and is knowledgeable on manifold subjects, but of course chemistry is her forte. If you are willing to work a little bit than I give her my highest recommendation.
Susan is an amazing professor. Tough as heck, but extremely helpful and clear in expectations. Will explain anything you need patiently, and is one of the nicest professors ever. Also a spectacular advisor, so if you have any questions about courses, chances are she knows those too.
Dr. Groh is one of my favorite professors, but you really need to put your nose in the books for her class. I did not have the fortune of taking AP Chemistry, and if you haven't, I'd recommend that you study extremely hard prior to taking her class. But she's a great professor, great advisor, and all around great person.
Dr. Groh is extremely helpful....do her practice tests and quizes
She is very knowledgeable and very kind. Her lectures will hold your attention, but the problem sets and tests are very difficult. It is absolutely necessary to use previous years' tests/problem sets for help. A lot of work outside the class.
Profssor Groh is currently my best professor. Her lectures, while they can be boring, are extremely helpful, but the class is mostly dependent on personal responsibility. The amount of work you put in will reflect your grade. The problem sets and exams are extremely difficult - you MUST use her resources of old tests to study.
Groh is the best teacher I've ever had in terms of actually helping you to learn a LOT, and very thoroughly. Not an easy class, but a rigorous, fair one. We're in college to learn, right? This is what classes should be like. Plus she's incredibly kind and reasonable.
Groh is the best professor I've ever had. The class is rigorous, but its an Honors Chemistry course for Chemistry-type majors, what did you expect? She's very clear, and if you attend office hours, which everyone should, it gets even more clear. Exams are easier than the homeworks, which is nice. Overall, my favorite professor.
Still the best professor I've had in college (and I'm a senior as I write this). Her enthusiasm for the subject is contagious and she works hard to help every student develop a complete understanding. Her problem sets challenge you while helping you learn the material in greater depth. Exams are not easy, but very fair.
CHEM111 Honors is super hard. Susan Groh is an amazing professor, though. She packs tons of hard information into each class but somehow makes it interesting to listen to. The class requires a ton of work but it is doable.
Hard class but fair, she gives you a lot of resources to prepare yourself with. Study off of the previous years tests (which she puts online with answer keys) and you'll be fine. Probably the best teacher of any type I've had in my life so far.
Dr. Groh is a very nice lady. She is willing to go out of her way in order to help her students. That being said, unless you took a rigorous AP Chemistry course in high school and did well on the AP exam, you may want to reconsider taking this class at the honors level. I did not have a great background in chemistry & it was a constant struggle.
Dr. Groh is very knowledgable and knows how to make the class interesting, but her tests and problem sets are extraordinarily difficult. One must do the problem sets with a group of others because they are almost impossible to do by oneself. Studying off of past exams and nailing the final are the keys to getting a decent grade in this class.
Dr. Groh's class is the hardest class I've taken in my entire life, by far. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DON'T HAVE A BACKGROUND IN CHEMISTRY. If you have any trouble in class, go to her immediately and she will help you. Her tests are really hard but she gives a lot of partial credit. Good luck.. you'll need it. Groh is a great woman though.
Groh was fun in class, really nice to talk to, and super clear on the material. If you look at the past exams, you'll know exactly what to do to do well on her tests. She didn't try to be tricky, so just know the material.
Dr. Groh is a very nice person and is always there for you. Go to her office hours as much as possible, it never hurts and they really helped me. You NEED to look at the old exams she posts online and be ready to study for the tests. The point recapture on the final really helps, so overall if you work hard you can get a decent grade.
Professor Groh continued to exhibit her excellent teaching abilities in the second half of freshman year with this course. Her lecture slides tell you everything that is important and they are even color-coded! If you can get into this honors class, do it!!!
Not terribly difficult material, but the class is super problem sets that are due every three weeks take forever and there are really tough tests every three weeks. Other than that there is no assigned homework
Hardest class I've ever taken but Groh is always helpful at office hours and makes sure you know what you need to know for the tests and problem sets. 4 problem sets which take forever to complete but otherwise no homework
Challenging enough to be interesting- make sure that you go to class, and her office hours if you need. If you don't understand, she'll explain in a different way, and if you still can't get it, she'll note your effort. Genuinely cares about her students, both as people and as learners.
This class is hard, but she teaches an incredible amount of material that will help you in future classes.
There's a lot of material she covers but if you take 111 with her you get used to it. Tests are hard and the problem sets take a long time but you learn a lot of valuable things you'll definitely need later. Teaches more relevant things than burmeister.
Both the hardest and best class I took all freshman year. Professor Groh is truly a gem; she cares about the students, cares about teaching well and is very fair. Problem sets kill you, exams are 3 hours, but study hard and you can not only get an A but learn more than you ever thought possible.
Professor Groh cares about every student in her classes to an incredible degree. She is one of the most intelligent, caring and passionate educators one will find anywhere. Her lectures are very entertaining and engaging and she is willing to talk with students outside of lecture for extra help. Homework and tests are hard but doable with effort.
Absolutely horrendous professor that is completely out of touch with the needs of freshmen. This isn't a graduate course. Teach at an appropriate level, and don't assume everyone in your first-year course intends to pursue a pHD in Chemistry.
A really tough course especially if your Chemistry background is not entirely strong. Professor Groh is very knowledgeable and willing to help you understand the content covered in class as much as possible. Exams are difficult but manageable with intensive review and Problem Sets are really difficult. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE!!
Pros: Terrific person. Cares about your grades. We got to hold liquid nitrogen. She is basically the perfect professor Cons: Stupid hard class. It ain't high school anymore, ya bunch of kittens
Groh is truly a wonderful professor who loves to teach and seriously cares about her students. The class is hard as hell with very long problem sets and the exams are easily harder than anything you have ever taken in high school. Unless you have a lot of experience with chemistry don't take the class. But if you have her, get ready to study HARD.
TAKE THIS CLASS. I had the opportunity to take chem classes beyond the scope of AP Chem in high school, but Dr. Groh's class gave me a broader and more in depth understanding of chemistry than all of those classes combined. My only regret is that I won't be able to take another class with her after CHEM112H. Oh, and do your problem sets early!
The most caring teacher I have ever had. She really wants the students to learn. If you need extra help, go to office hours and she will make sure that you understand. The exams are the hardest exams I have ever taken, the first one will end you. However, if you really put the work in and go to extra help, you will see that hard work pays off.
Professor Groh understands chemistry extremely well and teaches it in a rewarding and engaging manner. The class will challenge you, but was definitely worth it. She is also a very kind and helpful lady.
My best professor. She's so caring and gives students food during her office hours and exams. Her lectures are amazing and cannot be skipped; the amount of material covered per lecture is high. Class is super fast-paced and the exams test you on EVERYTHING you learn. Her problems are very good. With her classes, you'll be prepared for future chem!
Material may appear straightforward, but the exams and problem sets extend well beyond lectures -- be prepared to WORK and STUDY. The exams are very tough, perhaps too tough for an introductory chemistry class designed for first-year students. It may be best to take the non-Honors section and ease into the coursework of freshman year.
Dr. Groh is the best professor I've ever had! She really cares about her students and it's obvious that she truly enjoys teaching freshmen. She's patient, understanding, brilliant, funny, and she really wants her students to succeed; not just in her class but in every aspect of their lives. She's such a wonderful woman!
Wonderful professor; has a real wealth of knowledge. She gives really interesting lectures. Groh is very accommodating of the needs of the students and is a fantastic resource. Her class, while very challenging, is also incredibly rewarding. The problem sets and exams should not be taken lightly.
Even if you had a strong background in AP chemistry, this class is a nightmare. If you don't immediately retain everything from her dense lectures, you will spend hours upon hours on the homework and studying for exams. All grades except the final include partial credit, which is lenient and is the only reason why I passed. Very demanding class.
Groh was one of the highlights of my Freshman fall, and if every class was taught with her level of attention and care I don't doubt I could learn anything. She loves chemistry, and the only thing that she cares about more are her students learning. Still, get ready to work. Yes she curves. Yes people still got F's. It's not easy, but it's worth it
Just like in the fall, Prof. Groh was outstanding. When not discussing important chemistry principles, Groh went into great detail about real-world applications of the concepts. Still, CHEM112 was a very challenging class; be prepared to invest lots of time into problem sets, making orgo flashcards, reviewing discussion keys, and etc. Great course!
Incredibly difficult but sincerely intelligent and caring. If you want a comprehensive chemistry background, this is the class to take. Be prepared to work. Her point recapture system is the best mechanism for ensuring that you learn and retain all the material in the class. Fair grader.
Susan Groh is as good as you can hope for from an introductory chemistry course. She gives such a good overview of the material that you'll need for the next years, and it's a joy if you enjoy chemistry. Terribly hard, but you can work for it and pass.
best chem professor in UD
If chemistry is part of your major, or you enjoy it, have Groh as a professor! The class cycles every three weeks with the first being no assignments, the second having a problem set due, and the third having an exam. Problem sets are difficult and time consuming but you're allowed to work together. Extremely helpful for problem solving skills.
The class is difficult not because the professor is bad, but because the material is challenging. That being said, the quality of lectures is very good, lots of study materials and it is defiantly possible to do well with effort. Do not blow off problem sets and be ready to form study groups. Exams are hard, but doable. Very good honors class.
Dr. Groh was one of my favorite professors. Her class was extremely difficult, and I wish I had put in the time to go see her during office hours to get help. She cares about her students and puts in so much effort. Original test material so you NEED to study. One of the most caring profs and I wish I could take her again.
Dr. Groh is incredible as a professor and advisor, but she doesn't go light on any course. I had CHEM 111 and 112. Those courses felt like getting gut punched repeatedly for two semesters, and 2/3 of the students who entered dropped out of the major, but I came out of it so much more knowledgeable and prepared for the future courses my major has.
