I Think that she is a very knowledgable and reflective teacher who is able to communicate ideas effectively. She puts in a lot of time to assist students to do well, and she seems to inspire students about the issues we discuss in the course.
Susan err... Su-Zen (whatever) turned me into a Misogynist and I am a chick!
Excellent teacher. Really smart and makes the information interesting.
Su-zen is an amazing professor, and a brilliant woman. Her style is excellent, and very easy to learn from. The approach she takes to serious issues really helps students engage, and she's very aware of the social dynamics of the classroom. I'd highly recomend all her classes.
The best professor ever. She gave me the tools to critcally analyse my notions of social justice. Su-zen is a wonderful person, and one of the few profesors who takes the time to develop a relationship with her students, she inspired me to persue my goals, challanged me to critically examine myself
Su-zen was one of the best teachers I've ever had.
Su-zen is a wonderful person. However, I don't like her teaching style. She was hard to follow, a hard marker and I came away from each of her classes having learned nothing of value.
instructors like her are the reason Womens Studies is treated like a joke and not the serious discipline that it is. A student will take one course with a teacher like her and come away with such a distorted view of the discipline that they will discount it entirely.
Possitive most of the time, but can have a crucial negative attitude.
A really good prof, but a really hard marker! I enjoyed her lectures, and I think she applies a lot of skills to "real" life. She is very personable and approachable.
Susan was a great teacher..you could tell she spent lots of time getting her lectures ready to try and help everyone understand. Her marking was tough..but not if you came to class and payed attention. If you didnt come to class you might be lost of the exams..
very bias , projects her views as facts and dismisses all other possibilities. Has some wacked out conspiracy theories and i see her as a communist who has no respect for a free capitalist society .
Susan is a wonderful professor who encourages her students to formulate their own ideas. One of the best classes I have ever taken, it has forever changed my perspective on women's studies.
Susan has opened my world and totally changed my perspective on gender and the world for the better. She effectively taught us how to think critically. How could people say she turned them off wmst?! I'm minoring in now it cause of this class. I was a feminist before th class, but now i actually understand feminism. Everyone should take this class.
Susan was one of the best profs I've had. She made her lectures intresting. She is very nice and is willing to help a student in any way she can. Her class opened my eyes to the world of feminism...I now look at the world differently after taking her class. I would definitly recommend her to others.
Great prof who taught me a lot about the subject. Really nice, approachable, easy to talk to. A lot of people thought her marking was difficult, though I found that if you listened to her and did what she asked, you could do very well. Definitely recommend her to others.
Susan is an incredible prof, knows her stuff inside and out and can even keep a 3 hour lecture interesting. She did not, however, get the memo that WMST is a easy class. Heavy work load, VERY hard tests and tons of quizzes. Would not take this class for fun or as an elective.
I looked forward to her class every week. She is knowledgeable, interesting, and really engages the class. I don't think she is a "hard marker", but I go to class and pay attention, so that probably helps. I will be taking another class with her in the future if I get the chance!
Great professor. Keeps the class very fun and interesting. Learned an enormous amount from her. Highly recommended.
great class and teaching style. She is a very intelligent individual and would love to take another class with her.
Great teacher, very high energy and good at keeping the interest level up. I would definitely take another class with her.
She is one of the best teachers at Mount Royal. If you have a chance to take any of her WMST classes I would tell you to run and sign up!!! She is a fair marker if you know your material and readings are essential. You will get so much out of her classes!!!!
Her name is spelt Susan not Suzen.Anyways she is an amazing prof and knows her stuff. She is extremely full of life and enjoys teaching, I have taken two classes with her and will be taken another one next year! Once you come to class,do the work and readings then you will get alot out of the class! I did, Mount Royals lucky to have her as a prof!!
If you are not passionate about Women's Studies she's probably not the prof for you but for anyone who is? She is nothing short of inspiring. I also took her WMST 3339 class and took this second class with her only because my experience in the first class was so good.
Best Prof..
She is an AMAZING woman, so happy I had her as a prof. ***HIGHLY RECOMMENDED***
best prof!
Would never take one of her classes again. Her marking varied and she would be very judgemental even though she'd ask your opinion. She also would pin point you out and criticize you for missing a class.
Susan is a lovely woman, however this class was not for me. If you are incredibly passionate about women's studies and want to have circle discussions in every class then you'll enjoy it. It was an easy A. However, you must email her the reason why you miss class though, which I find silly for university.
At first I disliked Susan's class because I thought she was a space-case that was a stereotypical new-age feminist. After a few days, I started to realize I was basing my opinion on almost no real information on true feminism. She is out there, but she's also kind, understanding, and knowledgeable. Give this class a chance, it will change you!
Susan is an amazing & inspiring proff. She allows you to look at feminism on an everyday level. She does not judge students & fosters a loving environment. I took a Women's study class before and it scared me and i dropped it within the first day. However, Susan's class is one that every women should take. She makes ideas simple & relatable.
awesome poff. Her teaching and learning style is unique but engaging. She has no final or midterm which is a dream to every student. Though you want to come to class cause they are very fun. Would recommend to everyone and anyone.
Susan is an absolutely amazing prof! I highly recommend taking this class with her even if you are not a feminist. She will truly open your eyes about the world. She is the best prof i ever had in my 3 years at MRU!
Dont turn away from the class because of her unique teaching style, you get used to it! This class was such an eye opener, and it changed my perspective on a lot of things. Susan is a wonderful prof and if you have the chance to take her class you definitely should. She's a huge asset to MRU and I feel lucky to have had her as a prof.
Susan is absolutely fantastic. She fosters a friendly and open environment while still thoroughly covering everything. She's an easy grader as long as she can see your effort. Does expect that you will constantly be participating, but never says a single negative thing, she's such a positive influence and I always left her class feeling good.
Susan, oh wow she is absolutely amazing. So inspirational and changes your perspectives in a positive manner. She is always there if anyone needs her- so helpful and supportive ! I loved this class and I love Susan. Participation really does matter though !
Susan is the best teacher I have ever had in my university career. She is an inspiration and a person of great strength and dignity. I learnt so much about striving for equality and I intend to learn more. Amazing content and lots of readings. Don't feel pressure to talk while in class. The environment is safe and she doesn't judge either way.
amazing prof. thought I wouldn't like her style of teaching but really learned to love it. only thing I hated was that it was a 8am class, but hey that's not her fault lol.
favorite professor
Susan is an amazing prof! Her class is a real eye opener. Although we did not do many assignments, we were assigned two conditioning papers and sat through dialogue every class. Discussing the issues of the world today as a group really helped everyone understand society better.
Great Prof. Loves what she is teaching which is important. Her class is discussion based so if you don't like talking in a large group setting don't take her class. You need to attend to pass, she will come up to you every class if you skip and ask why. Truly an inspirational prof.
She is an inspiring professor who really cares about her students' well-being. She is the type of teacher that every student wishes for in school.
I shied away from calling myself a feminist till this class until this course! There were people who couldn't handle Susans brutal honesty of how society is constructed (white imperialist patriarchy, white privilege etc) but if you're open minded and ready for an eye opening experience, take her class! Only ridiculous thing was sitting in a circle.
Absolutely loved loved loved Susan and her class, she is so inspirational and the reason I chose to minor in Women and Gender Studies, best prof at MRU!
Easily the best prof I have had so far. So inspirational and such a kind heart. Her class seriously changed my perspective on so many things! 10/10 would recommend. :)
Susan is one of the kindest people I have ever met. Amazing prof, cares deeply about the learning environment. She nurtures the space where people can talk about their experiences and learn from each other. It is a different experience than any other, I recommend everyone to take a class with her.
Susan is fantasitic prof, she deeply cares about her students and is dedicated to her class. Her style of teaching, which is dialouge based, is truly unique and an essiential part of the woman's studies program at MRU.
Susan is truly phenomenal. I always looked forward to attending her class. Her style of teaching always kept me motivated to listen and participate in class discussion. Very kind and easy to talk to.
Susan is an amazing lady. Her class is very rewarding and she shows a lot of care for her students. Best prof at MRU
She seems very victimized by the world and is very close-minded.
Susan is such a respectful and sweet professor. I thoroughly enjoyed every class with her, and looked forwarded to her class every day. She creates such a safe and sound environment for her students to speak up. The classroom may get emotional at times because of the open-ness and comfort she aims to have in her course. It was a great experience.
Susan is the most inspirational professor I've ever had. She's a genuine and caring individual and creates a safe and loving space within her classroom. There is no textbooks, tests or finals for this class. Although it is an easy A (if you're prepared to read and write quite a bit) you won't want the semester to ever end.
Susan is probably the most amazing prof I've had, shes so kind and caring. We just sit in a circle and discuss our experiences, and the only papers we have to write are basically story telling. Overall she's an amazing human being and I'm going to go out of my way to take another class with her because they're so worth it
My favourite teacher I've ever had. She is truly inspirational in her effort and knowledge, not to mention her immense caring. She listens to everyone and can admit she's wrong, it's like everyone in the class is equal to her and we learn together. I learned how to listen and be more caring because of her, she made a huge impact in my life honestly
If you have anxiety of talking in front of large groups of people don't take her, she doesn't understand that some people are uncomfortable with this and your grade will suffer greatly
Susan is very charismatic. She creates an environment you will feel comfortable talking in. This class was very focused on collective dialogue, everyone needs to participate and share their experiences. Weekly readings and responses, it's an easy A. No final exam, you basically just talk about yourself and your experiences. She's amazing.
Susan creates a welcoming environment. She asks you to be vulnerable & share honestly about your thoughts & experiences. She also calls you out on your junk, when necessary. It can be difficult for people who are not use to that kind of thing or if you're not willing to examine your biases. This class can teach you how to be honest with yourself.
Pretty good prof, very liberal which is expected in women's studies. I didn't agree with everything the course pushed. She expect that everyone will participate, she even ended class early because not enough ppl were talking, she failed to realize that we didn't understand what she was talking about. They should make course more male friendly
Dr. Harris has made us write responses about a lot of heavy + controversial topics in the course, which was not in the description when I signed up. Throughout the course, she has said not to be scared to voice our opinions, although if it does not correlate with hers you are wrong. Also, if nobody is saying anything she will walk out of the class.
Susan is such a genuine, caring person. She really wants you to see the world in a better perspective and be accountable for your actions. Get ready to share a lot of personal experience whether it be good or bad. I looked forward to going to class because every class would be a roller coaster ride of emotions (in all the good ways).
Susan is very humble and caring; she is very knowledgeable but respects and values others' ideas. I could easily trust her. I LOVED the dialogue style of class. I learned more than the normal lectures where people just text. NO electronics allowed in this class. She is so approachable helps you do well as she's a kind soul. Responsive to emails.
Needless to say this course was not based on women studies I think it is very poor on her part that she guilts students to share and puts students in a vulnerable situation where they feel pressured to share personal information to a group of 30 strangers for marks she is very close minded and will not accept your opinion unless it agrees with hers
Not my vibe
This course is for people who have life trauma. I have had a hard time with the weekly assignments and relating in class because I've had no issues. If you are in the UEO program, do not come here, she marks papers harshly if you don't have life issues. Teacher is nice, but its 3 hours of people talking about their life, and crying. Don't recommend
Do not take this class if you feel uncomfortable sharing life experiences. If your opinion differs from hers you will be wrong. Be ready to be called out in front of the entire class. This class is essentially group therapy.
One of the best classes I've taken at MRU. Susan will make you work for your mark, but she gets you to open your eyes and think critically about the topics that are discussed in class.
Susan is a great prof, we kept contact even after the class ended. Her class really helped me in further opening my eyes to the world around us. She really enjoys participation in her class, and honesty in her papers. Definitely recommend!
Claims you dont have to share in front of the class if youre not comfortable but if you dont she gets pissed and calls you out. If you dont agree with her you are ultimately wrong. Wouldnt have her as a prof again. I found this to just be students sharing trauma rather than learning about women and gender studies.
I love Susan, her classes are so eye opening, however you have to be willing to be vulnerable with the rest of the class which not everyone will enjoy. her classes are a safe space to share experiences and talk about them.
This is a group therapy class. If you arent looking for a space to sit with 40 strangers and cry, dont take this class. Theres no actual curriculum, the girls in the class just sit and share their traumas. If you arent comfortable sharing, you wont do well. It was an uncomfortable environment for me.
I truly enjoyed this class; I was able to explore a diversity of topics, and share my experiences with supportive peers. Not for everyone, since vulnerability and self-awareness is strongly encouraged, but this class helped improve my self-concept (I strongly recommend). Participation-based class (need to attend a minimum of 80% of the classes).
Participation-based class (need to attend a minimum of 80% of classes). Personally, I LOVED this class! It was great to be with other women and share our experiences with health, illnesses, and healing. Not for everyone, since you must be willing to be vulnerable and look inwards to do well, but this class was life-changing (I strongly recommend).
I remember really loving Susan and her class. The calling out was scary but necessary to knock sense into people who were being arrogant. However, I found the way this was done to be twisted at times... I found it traumatic and triggering at times being in the class. everyone is at different places in life and some are not ready for group therapy.
WOW what a great example for all of us. Thank you for sharing and caring. Wish all profs were like this. Highly recommend this prof
Omg, I do not know where to start. Susan is hands down the best prof I have had in my 3 years at MRU. She is the absolute sweetest, beyond caring, inspirational, extremely helpful, and always there to support you regardless of what you are facing. Susan gives wonderful feedback on assignments. This was one of my favorite classes!
Susan is amazing! She is super caring and creates a safe space in class where everyone can share stories to enrich the weekly readings, and guide discussions. Assignments are reflection-based, and she gives great feedback on them! I have loved this class so so much!
This entire class was a group therapy session and she picked her favourites. If you don't share in the class she will despise you. There are a lot of readings and they aren't really touched upon in the course so there is no point in reading them. If your opinion doesn't match up with hers you will get horrible marks and she will hate you even more.
Susan is very understanding and flexible with extensions. I have learned more in her dialogue classes than any other course at MRU. However, participation, doing the assigned readings and fully embracing the process is necessary to do well in her classes. I recommend taking any of her courses. They are truly life changing!
Susan's classes are unlike most, so be prepared to get uncomfortable and accept that the learning comes from one another and not one specific source. If you want to deepen your feminist understanding or become a part of a class community unlike any other, I can't recommend her classes enough. The learning will extend beyond the classroom
Susan was an excellent professor. Participation does matter for this course and she's not afraid to call you out if you don't offer anything to the discussion. Having said that, she made the class very interesting. Lots of little papers (500+ words) throughout the semester but overall pretty light in assignments and no tests :) would recommend
Susan is kind & passionate about the topics discussed. She can be a bit intimidating or intense but is overall pretty chill, especially with assignment due dates. Graded by 5 500 word assignments (not hard) and 2 papers( harder) . Participation does matter and you will always sit in a circle. I enjoyed this class and learned some interesting things
Susan is an amazing, caring prof! Our classes were all dialogue classes, and they were amazing. You definitely get what you put into it, participation is a major part of this course. There are readings every week and 2 big papers. You can many insights throughout this course. Susan is also very passionate about this teaching which makes it amazing.
This class is taught through dialogue and attendance is mandatory. Definitely not an easy class as it requires a lot of self reflection. However don't let that scare you because this is truly one of the best classes I've taken. Susan is an amazing prof who challenges you to understand your conditionings and how it shapes your perspective.
