Very enegetic teacher and interesting lecturer.

Very Perceptive, Knows how to teach, Always helpfull.
Great lecturer / Tests are over covered material / Awesome Teacher and patient.
Susan is awesome!! She is enthusiastic in her approach to teaching. Her assignments allow for creativity, and she makes a point to truly listen to her students comments in and out of the classroom. I wish that I could take more of her classes.

The best! Clear and concise. Encourages every student, regardless of ability. Doesn't make you feel foolish if your response to her questions are not what she was looking for.
I had Hasegawa for 110 as well as 109. She creates a fun classroom environment and her enthusiasm for history is very contagious.
Susan's class is challenging. Her assignments at first seem hard and a little off the beaten path, but end up being original and worthwhile. Her tests are hard if you are unprepared. One class that I definately do not dose off in.
She is okay professor though she doesn't always go by the lectures. you must know the whole book to understand the lectures. If you have a learning disability she is very biased towards that.
Whatever that fool wrote about Susan being biased if you have a learning disability is crap.
Great teacher, fair but tough. You do the work, you get the grade!
Awesome teacher!!! She was the best teacher I've ever had at City college. History is a boring subject for me...but she really got me interested in it. I would recomend to everyone. If your not good at history don't worry you'll do good in this class!!!
She is tough, but if you like a fast paced environment, this is it. She gives creative assignments, and will tell you when you've done a good job.
Professor Hasegawa is one of the two best teachers I have ever had, because of her I became a history major. Her lectures are good and she gives students creative activities to do. If you want to learn take her.
She knows her material well and explains it clearly in class.
She's very thorough. Knows her subject matter better than most. A few papers in the class, plus a few MC exams, which are open-note. Attend class, take notes, review them, and you'll do great. Susan's lots of fun, making history interesting! Oh, and she's a really cute, tiny, Asian woman.
BEST TEACHER... put the work in and it will DEFINTIELY pay off in the end... her quizzes really did help understand the subject better... her study guides for each test could not be more clearer... she really knows her subject and makes the class great!
Very good teacher.
GREAT Teacher..one of my favorite history teachers, shes got a great sense of humour...she has alot of assignments-but she is understanding, the best way to ace her class is to -Take Notes, she always tells you what to EXtra credit! SHOW up! Gives points just for attendence, compassionate if you Work hard!!
Very quick in her lectures and is constantly lecturing. She's not very entertaining and she has like an overload of information. Although, she's more helpful out of class.
Her tests are more comprehensive than verbatim so I had trouble, but overall she is a great lady and despite my difficulty I still got an A. Remember: Comprehensive is key.
She's alright and easy but she's not cool at all. I wouldnt take her again
Tremendous amount of work, be prepared. Not for slack-offs. I'm not sure if she's hard, just do whatever is required of you, and you'll earn the grade. Best history prof I've had, very clear, concise, and fair.
Her class is fairly easy. She gives a lot of busy work but offers lots of extra credit. A lot of stuff is take home. The in class tests are pretty hard, but she is helpful outside of class. She is very nice and not very intimidating.
Great Professor, very funny, she gave around 5 tests and 5 take home quizzes. For the final project she assigns a biography paper on a World War II person due the last week of class. Great class…
I was disappointed by the level at which this class was taught. I felt like I was back in High School, and was treated that way by both the material and the instructor. She would have, however, been an excellent high school teacher.
Don't get me wrong she is an excellent instructror, but a little disorganized with the lecture notes - if not her lectures. Her take home quizzes are answers all straight from the book, and her exams are of average difficulty, but the good news is she gives out x-tra credits for outside assignments and an A is possible in this class.
Very structured & pedagogical. Tests are multiple choice, open notes+essay which is good, but also means that her questions are very difficult. Out of five answers maybe 4 are correct, but which is the most correct? Make sure you take good notes from the book, not everything is included in lectr. Essay as class project w/ choice of oral or written
I did like the many opportunities she gives you to raise your grade with extra credit assignments. Do them!! They'll boost you up. I just thought her room was boring (something about it being dark and cold). I always wanted to fall asleep.
She's a 4-foot sergeant in that classroom! She doesn't take BS from anyone, and WILL kick out the slackers fooling around in the back. I respect that toughness, and I like that she balances it out with fair, open-note exams and a good appreciation for the hard workers.
Made subject matter interesting. Had a lot of energy, which made it easier to stay awake in an early-morning class.
Great Prof! I learned more from her then almost any other teachers at City. She assigns alot of work and gives you many chances to get xtra credit. I will take her again if I can. REALLY CARES ABOUT HER STUDENTS SUCCESS!! FUN CLASS...
I have a great understanding of Asia and Asian culture because of this class! I now find myself correcting and teaching others about Asian history. This class should be a requirement in college! Thanks Professor Hasegawa for all your hard work!
she is helpful, nice, and a wild teacher
Not the best.No real teaching.Starts to lecture then babbles about something else. Too much info on tests.good thing, lots of e.c. must read or you will fail b/c she doesn't like to lecture. very scrambled, unclean writer, hard to get point across. lots of writing. study hard or fail prettymuch
Hard class but if you study hard she'll help you to get good grades.I am a foreign student and finished the class with an A so anybody can do it.If you are a good student and attend class every day and are not lazy take her you wont regret it.
Prof. Hasegawa is an amazing teacher. She makes the class interesting and engaging with discussions and projects. It's not all lectures, but her lectures are very interesting. Always available to help or discuss any question. One of the best teachers I've taken.
I took this class online, awesome! Easy A. Just do all the homework and use the text for the quizzes and should get an A. She grades very easy on essays, there's like 3 or 4. Highly recommended.
Fantastic professor! Class was also interesting, and informative and she's really fun. She is also extremely helpful. I really enjoyed her classes, best professor at SD City College.
An extremely unclear professor who asks you to perform within ludicrous parameters. ENTIRE first Powerpoint presentation was about plaigarism, and how she will severely punish you if you are caught. So paranoid about cheating (students must also submit all assignments to turnitin.com) that you have to wonder how many were wrongfully accused.
Worst instructor I have ever had. Extremely paranoid about plagiarism and reminded us at least 3 times a week we would be severely punished if caught. Her "discussions" consisted of essays, not actual class discussions. STAY AWAY FROM THIS INSTRUCTOR IF YOU VALUE YOUR SANITY! I no longer enjoy online classes because of her.
To the recent negative comment: ALL professors are anti-plagiarism, and being in COLLEGE means you'll have essays. It's challenging, but in a good way, and she offers you every opportunity to ace the class, you just have to TAKE THEM and be a RESPONSIBLE STUDENT. And be an adult about it, too, for crying out loud...
Avoid this class online for sure. Firstly there were 5 textbooks required for the online course costing over $400. Secondly the writing and reading requirements were the most intensive of any college course I have taken including physics and math. If you are going to take this class then make it your ONLY class or you will have to drop it too.
This class is going to be a writing class. Lots of extra credit essays. And then some regular credit essays. My writing greatly improved because of this class. I got an A, while taking Bio 107 and Math 95. You have to read a lot, If you want the A its there for the taking but its not a cake walk to get it.
Book wasn't necessary if went to lectures, & midterm harder than final. A group presentation on a country is 1st thing, then either a service learning project or research paper (4-7 p) due at end. You have to talk about it in class either way, but is graded easy. Yes, she cares about plagiarism a lot, so do other profs, get over it. Not a big deal.
Okay kids, this class is a lot of work. She's a PhD, and it shows. BUT it is also worth it. This is the most intensive and yet most worth it, online class I have taken. It is also the one I've learned the most from. Note: Learning is hard work but is worth it. You don't float through this class, but the benefits far outweigh the effort.
This class looks hard but it was an amazing experience. She gives lots of time to complete your quizzes. All books are very interesting and easy to read. She is very quick to respond your email and even she reminds before each assignment due. You will get at least 2 weeks of time to complete your each assignment. I would recommend to take this class
She seems to think her class is the only class and assigns a huge amount of reading. I am a good reader but had a hard time keeping up with the reading. I don't recommend taking this class if you already have a full load. Other than that, it is a very interesting and enlightening class.
I recommend you find another professor if you want to take this class. The assignments are confusing and the online format is confusing. It is too easy to miss an assignment becasue she asks you to submit in different areas of the website each week. No consistancy and very hard to follow.
She is very helpful and the best teacher. She requires a lot of work but is worth it. you would get a lot out of this teacher.
Mrs. Hasegawa is such an awesome teacher! she loves what she does and is willing to go to all lengths to help you understand! if you are not serious about your assignments or showing up to class you will fail!
Omg this teacher is my ideal teacher helpful energetic its always a happy day in her class and she would explain something to u even for a hundreth time just for u to get it ..
This class is a great class to take, but not if you are looking for a laid back class. I took it online and the online site was very easy to understand. Professor always sends a reminder of what is due so you dont miss out. A TON OF READING AND WRITING!! Professor is very helpful!
Helpful, hardworking, challenging, professional instructor! Follows syllabus. In her class you will read, think deeply, and write a lot. Makes timely announcements. Grades assignments promptly. Respectful and caring. Expects you to do your own best work and participate.
Professor Hasegawa is a very good teacher. She is what a college professor should be. If you want to get the most out of the history classes, I highly recommend Professor Hasegawa.
The material is easy but there is so much work in this class and reading assignments. Put it like this, my upper division classes were a breeze at ucsd compared to this teacher. She's nice and cares about the student's well being. Damn those weekly assignments though, 40 question quizzes every week and only worth 10 points Have fun taking her class
I liked the material, and I liked Professor Hasegawa. There is work in the class. She has never given me a weekly quiz, I've had her 2 semesters now and there has not been any weekly quizzes.
Excellent Asian history classes, 120 and 121, loved both...please only take class if you plan on attending class, and even do a little work every now and then, please don't take this class to talk to your friends. Ancient asian civilizations (120) or Modern (121), it's the professor's world, were just visiting and trying to learn.
She will give you a lot of work but no matter what she was always there to help. she is super knowledgeable and super helpful. Never turned me away or didn't answer my question. If you email her she emails you back within one day.
Hands down the best professor ive ever had. Passionate about the class passionate about her students. Gives excellent opportunities to learn, our class got to volunteer as decants for the Japanese Internment Camp exhibit in Balboa park. Learned SO much in class and out. Helpful, laid back, never boring, laughed a lot in class. Sparks interest
Hasegawa is a gem. She is a unique Professor and everything you do in the class is compliant with everyday life. Hands down, thee best history teacher ever! Made the class SO interesting!
Us History from Asian Amer. Perspective - took online. Had to drop after a few weeks because this class was so overwhelming. I was very interested in the subject material and very invested in my grade, but she asks a /lot/! She's very responsive, helpful, and nice, but be able to put your whole life into it if you take this course!
Yes, this course is A LOT of reading. But the professor has clearly put very much thought into planning the course, she is very helpful and actually leaves you feedback. You do need a good amount of time to devote to the course for sure. She bases evaluation on every method (essays, test, discussion board, erc..) Great quality.
Professor Hasegawa is interested in active learners. You have to be a proactive reader as well. her class is designed for students NOT TO FAIL as long as you apply yourself. You can bring 1 page of front/back typed notes to test. she has good energy level and, jokes that touch base with the students. All of the work is easy just time consuming.
This class was fun. She finds enjoyment with active listeners. Always willing to help. She gave 2 take home tests and 2 in class blue book essays. Speaking of essays, there will be a couple that you will have to do. The reading is a lot, but it does not seem to disappoint even if you have little interest in History.
I'm still in her class but I'm loving it so far. She's an excellent teacher. She's easy but she's hard. Read the text it seems like a lot but if you're organized and timely it's a piece of cake. Participate in class. She's entertaining and is clearly passionate about US History. I strongly recommend her.Helps a lot with essays and tests.
Ms. Hasegawa is extremely organized and quite the stickler for deadlines. If you follow her syllabus and adhere to deadlines you should do just fine. The 5 book requirement was a bit intimidating, however, I found the reading material interesting and easy to follow. I would take another class offered by this instructor in the future.
Most definitely not an easy course to take, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and have to say that Professor Hasegawa was one of my favorite teachers ever. You can tell she really cares about her students and wants them to learn. I would highly recommend her.
I've always found history interesting and important, but Pro. Hasegawa made it very entertaining! She is so devoted to students, and wants them to be as involved as possible. Very humble and cheerful person.
I really like Professor Hasegawa when she teaches on topic. She skips from topic to topic and it's extremely confusing and it gets hard to listen to her after awhile and the whole class zones out. SO much reading that you have to make time for or nothing will make sense what she is talking about in class. I would prefer class to be more structured.
Fun professor, makes the material interesting to learn. There is a lot of reading, so stay on top of it. Gives lots of extra credit opportunities. Be aware of grades on Blackboard. Sometimes there are take home tests and quizzes. Participate in class. Assignments are submitted through blackboard. Not too hard!
She is very nice and warming but her class is not too many essays required readings and too many things due by next class to even have a good weekend, but on a personal level she is the nicest teacher i have ever had
Her online classes will keep you busy. Quizzes, readings, papers, discussions. She is the type of professor who does not easily give out full points. I found myself always getting 18.5/20, and that got on my nerves. The non-online classes were lectures I couldn't keep up with for someone who is 'historically challenged', and the occasional paper.
There was a decent amount of homework given throughout her classes. The take home tests were fairly easy and she had no problem with the students sharing answers.
She is an awesome teacher, not a bad thing can be said about her. A fair amount of homework and projects are given out through out the semester.
I love the class and she is always willing to meet or phone conference, but I just can't keep up with the work. I feel like even if I get the reading all done I don't always have time enough to process it so that I can do the material justice. If she could just slow down a little I might be able to hang in there, but I'm afraid I might have to with
She's an awesome teacher, really funny and always makes sure to get her lesson plan done on time. Class participation is huge. It's a ton of reading but as long as you get the gist of the material you will pass. She tests often but they are straightforward and she prepares the class well for them.
Professor Hasegawa was my first professor in College. She is such a caring teacher. History is my least favorite subject however, she makes it really interesting and engaging. There's a lot of reading and papers but it is doable as long as you keep up with the assignments. She is caring and definitely a real gem.
Terrible communicator.
I took a history 109 class during the Fall 2017 semester. She was really nice, and the class was decently thorough. I really enjoyed it, and I absolutely recommend it if you need a History 109 class.
Great teacher. I enjoyed taking her class and learned a lot from it.
Prof. Hasegawa is one of the best professors Ive ever had. She is extremely caring and is always open to helping you improve. Assignments arent hard if you actually do the reading and pay attention in class.
Amazing professor! I took her for Hist109 and Hist123 and her class is very easy if you actually read. Very interesting lectures as well and super caring!
Content, assignments, & focus regularly strayed from History, & into unrelated, present-day topics. I enjoy History, however, I was disappointed by the methodological relativism that regularly eclipsed facts. Our "History Book" was so ethnocentric, it presented the author's imagined thoughts projected onto historical subjects, in quotes. SMH.
Excellent class. The material was very informative, retrospective, and relevant. The professor was very communicative, and always put out assignments in advance. She even had options for different assignments for the week. Some of the material felt a little childish, but some people might like that. Best class of the semester.
She is a really great teacher. Her class is easy to understand and pass. She cares about her students and will personally email you if anything is missing to check in. She is always offering help and recommendations with tutoring and even giving extra credit if you go to the tutoring center for help on assignments. Super easy structure! Take it.
I really appreciated Professor Hasegawa's class. There is a free online textbook she used for mine, and a few paperbacks you should rent (or buy if you love them so much like me). Quizzes you can retake as many times as you need, and there are group discussions and a few short response assignments. I am enjoying this class.
I have completed class HIS109 in spring 2022. I believe many students will be very satisfied with her teaching and enthusiasm. Before taking this class, I was very worried this class takes a lot of time to read books and English is not my first language. But she helped me overcome this barrier. I am very grateful about that!
Lots of reading, some documentary videos and movies. Very interesting content especially for foreigners who never learned US history before like me. Extra credit and a designated class tutor available. Very caring professor. The required material was free.
Very good class. Textbook is engaging and helpful, workload is reasonable. You get infinite attempts for most tests and I was always able to do good based on my notes. Discussions with other students are done online. Professor is active and easy to reach, and the work is interesting. Start your work early and take notes and you'll do good.
Professor Hasegawa is a great teacher, she is one of the best professors I've ever had. I took Hist 109 with her and then Hist 123. She is always available when you are in need. She is extremely caring and is always open to helping you improve. She gives good advice with feedback.
Online accessible FREE textbook, besides that none. Easy- lets you repeat quizzes till you are happy with your grade (unlimited amount of times). No tests. Caring.
I did not read the textbook at all. I just took the weekly quiz until I got 100% and I studied thru the quizzes, that have unlimited tries. Several writing essays that force you to connect the history you learned to modern society. For book assignment, choose book with fewest pages. Prof is passionate and caring. Work isn't hard, just heavy.
Professor had a great class, lots of reading and writing.
One of the most caring professors I've ever had -- always offered words of encouragement and help if you missed an assignment. Open-note quizzes that you can retake until you're satisfied with the grade and overall easy assignments.
Weekly discussion posts + replies + quizzes (25 points) + sometimes an extra assignment. Seems like a lot but is totally doable and enjoyable because the FREE textbook is easy to understand. Can use notes on quizzes. Never got below an A on any assignment. Can retake quizzes and even final! Maybe 2-3 essays but easy! She wants you to pass!
Professor Hasegawa's class was extremely helpful and informative. She gave us the pdf for the textbook and gave multiple sources of information for the time period we studied. Hands down a great professor.
While she does expect participation and to talk with your peers, she is such a funny person an gives amazing lectures. It's difficult to contact her, best to speak to her in person. She uses a free online textbook, money spared. She doesn't let people leave early either. Her coursework is a lot of reading (10-20 pages) and a quiz every wednesday
Professor Hasegawa was fantastic! The way that she formats her classes are user friendly, and honestly not that hard. She chooses really interesting topics, so as long as you pay attention and do the assignments, you are all good. Also, she made the course accessible by choosing books that are in the campus library!!!
I took this class to complete my GE, but she was absolutely great, both in knowledge and feedback. This isn't a typical topic or class I am usually interested in, but I can tell she is passionate about history, and her grading and responses are very reasonable and helpful. Be prepared to do a bit of reading, but it shouldn't take up much time.
This professor isn't bad -- just not a dream-professor. Sometimes her lectures and instructions are confusing. The assignments are fairly easy -- just a lot of writing in class. She weirdly wants you to use AI, but if you're against using it (like I am), you can still get an A without doing so. She knew her stuff and I learned quite a bit.
